Christians Catch Hell - Gospel Roots, 1976-79

18

Utterly magnificent, sublimely soulful survey of the Gospel Roots label, subsidiary of the mighty TK Records at the height of the Miami Sound. Beautifully presented... the LPs with a 12"-square, full-colour, sixteen-page album of photos and original artwork. Check!!
A&R was co-ordinated by Gospel legends Ira Tucker — from the Dixie Hummingbirds — and Ralph Bass, veteran producer with Savoy, King and Chess. The label was run by Timmy Thomas, who had recently smashed with Why Can't We Live Together, for another TK spin-off, Glades. Operations were overseen by Henry Stone himself, unlikely King of Disco, who had recorded a young Ray Charles, and pushed forward James Brown. They drew in artists from all over the US, from St. Louis, Columbus, Memphis, Brooklyn, Cabrini Green in Chicago: unknowns like Camille Doughty, reluctant to jeopardise her job at GM ('Generous Motors') in Detroit, and huge-sellers like the revered Brooklyn All Stars, who started out on Peacock in 1958.

Choral belters, deep ballads, harmony quartets, epic city-blues, gritty funk, powerhouse female soul... Killer-diller Philly like a scorching version of Harold Melvin & The Blue Notes' Wake Up Everybody, and Jean Austin's raw Spirit Free, co-written by Ronnie Dyson, produced by Jesse James at Future Gold. Chicago Sound like The Fantastic Family Aires — named after the family's furniture store on North Cicero, but reminiscent of the Staple Singers at their best — through to the full-blown glory of The Fountain Of Life Joy Choir, led by Marvin Yancy from The Independents, and featuring Natalie Cole... Singers like Versie Mae Gibson, from the Jordans, by rights up there with Irma, Etta and Ree... Bangers 100%-guaranteed to find their way into Theo Parrish sets, and mortal delirium for the prissiest of soul and gospel purists.

Melt Yourself Down - Last Evenings On Earth Lp+cd

We never stop reading, although every book comes to an end, just as we never stop living, although death is certain' - Roberto Bolaño, Last Evenings On Earth

Question: it's the end of the world, how are you going to spend it

Last Evenings On Earth is the apocalyptic second album by Melt Yourself Down, evangelical hawkers of DNA-rearranging post-punk exotica. Snatch your passport and let this hydra-headed serpent take you for a dizzying, continent-hopping voyage around a globe spinning ever more rapidly off its axis.

If MYD's self-titled debut was a series of feverish nocturnal visions beamed from a sub-Saharan desert, where voodoo spirits were raised from dusty catacombs, then this is an even headier trip. Here the rhythm has migrated to the city to merge with the pulses and dark currents that run through it.

Capturing the raw energy and wild-eyed intensity of the MYD live show, this is music that speaks in tongues. In both sound and aesthetic, Melt Yourself Down have celebrated migration since day one. Theirs is musical unity through movement and sound.

If this is the end of the world, the Last Evening On Earth... bring it.

Melt Yourself Down are Kushal Gaya (vocals), Ruth Goller (bass), Shabaka Hutchings (saxophone), Satin Singh (percussion), Tom Skinner (drums) and Pete Wareham (saxophone), with Leafcutter John (electronics/production).

Grand Pianoramax - Soundwave

Grand Pianoramax is a supergroup' consisting of three strong personalities, each possessing outstanding mastery of their craft: the acute lyricism of Leo Tardin's keyboards, the immediate intimacy of Black Cracker's wild poetry and the powerful, razor-sharp and pugnacious drums of Dom Burkhalter. The virtues of this rare alloy illuminate each of their concerts, which have taken place all around the globe. Indeed, Grand Pianoramax did a 10-city tour across the USA and performed at major festivals worldwide, including Tokyo Jazz Festival, Montreux Jazz Festival, SXSW, CMJ Music Marathon in New York, Akbank Jazz Festival in Istanbul, Jazz à Vienne, and Paléo Festival in Nyon to name a few. With already four albums and two vinyls under their belt, the supergroup founded by Geneva-based pianist Leo Tardin releases their new album Soundwave' this winter, their debut collaboration with Mental Groove Records staying true to their instantly recognizable signature sound at the crossroads of post-jazz, art rock and hip-hop. Soundwave' is a new step in the ambitious artistic path of the trio. As opposed to their previous opus, this new release is characterized by a more DIY and less polished production, a better reflection of the spontaneity shining during the trio's live performances.

In Flagranti - Radiation Level

We're pretty excited about this one. Street Meat is the new imprint from UK producer and edit maestro Ghosts of Venice. The label's debut release comes from kings of sleaze In Flagranti.
Radiation Level is a looped out DJ tool that works it's way through funk guitar licks and rolling bass lines. Followed by the sultry and sleazy Freakin' Time. The flip side kicks off with the classic electro boogie sound of Breakin' In Space and closes out with the roller disco vibes of Switch

Rocco Universal - Tiny Islands (ray Mang Edit)

With a passion for disco, italo, Chicago house and Detroit
techno Patrizio Cavaliere aka Rocco Universal has been
collecting music for the last two decades and it's these
musical infuences that have shaped his raw, tripped out
disco/house production sound. 'Tiny Islands', his debut
release for Leng, is a real melting pot of rich melodies over
a thick baseline and is a clear example of Rocco's passion
for the dancefoor.
With something as multi layered and deep as the original
track it needed Ray Mang to add his trademark sound to
the remix. Here he goes straight for the jugular drawing out
some of the loops and percussion leaving no mistake as to
when this should be dropped on the dancefoor.

Fred Wesley & The New Jb's - Breakin' Bad

Reissued on LP with a sumptuous, five-color, 22' x 22' poster of the cover art, all wrapped in a Stoughton Tip-On jacket and thick polybag, there is never a bad time to revisit this classic (maybe replacing your worn-out original copy). Or, just as importantly, let it blow your mind for the first time.So many times we refuse to go back and break bread with our parents, relatives and old friends... Times are tough, the economy is rough, everybody's tryin' to make a dollar. Sometimes you get away from yourself. Won't you go back and break bread, while we still have some to break So implored James Brown, Fred Wesley and even album engineer Bob Both, on the back cover liners of the 1974 soul classic Breakin' Bread. Times were indeed tough for everyday folks in the waning days of the Nixon era. Escape-ism was needed. Humanity sometimes seemed to be in short supply. But James Brown and his assembled People Records roster were always there to take soul music fans away from their everyday trials and tribulations, even while occasionally funking up negative situations (for instance, 'Rockin' Funky Watergate,' one of the centerpieces of this album). The heavy grooves laid down by trombonist and bandleader Fred Wesley, saxophonist and arranger St. Clair Pinckney and Fred's assembled 'New J.B.'s' were, almost literally, comfort for the ears. 1974 saw a vortex of superfunk coming out of James Brown's People Records stable, and this platter wasn't even the only J.B.'s album that year (see also: Damn Right, I Am Somebody, also reissued by Get On Down). But it is one that added to the powerful musical and social legacy of that crew. It's an air-tight, eight course meal, with most platters clocking in at four delicious minutes each. 'Breakin' Bread' is a truly memorable funk stew, with warm, call-and-response vocals, complicated-but-laidback soul, and an important message - alluded to in the back cover plea. 'I Wanna Get Down,' 'Rice 'N' Ribs' and 'Funky Music Is My Style' all feature intricate, infectious grooves. In fact, there isn't much time to catch your breath on Breakin' Bread, and that's a beautiful thing

Conor's an extremely influential, yet somewhat mysterious figure in SF's disco and house underground. It's known that he has an enviable collection of disco on wax, that he's not afraid to use it, yet no one seems to know if he sleeps, or where his bed is, or if perhaps he just lies down among record crates with one eye open, scanning his vinyl collection....
In any case, the guy knows what he's doing. Along with SF's Solar, he's booked, hosted, and played alongside a long list of the world's best underground electronic, house, and disco artists at his party series No Way Back, and his taste and talent for curating artists, and selecting records, is widely acknowledged to be some of the best around.

Banda Black Rio's 'Maria Fumaca' is one of the strongest Brazilian samba-disco-funk-soul-fusion albums of all time.

Banda Black Rio were formed in 1976 by the late Oberdan Magalhães in Rio de Janeiro. They revolutionised 'black instrumental music' at the time with their Brazilian re-interpretation of soul, jazz, funk and disco grooves, inspired by the likes of Tim Maia and reminiscent of Kool & The Gang and Earth, Wind & Fire during their most on-point period of the 1970's. 'Maria Fumaca' is the groups first album, originally released by Atlantic in 1977, a record that bought the group worldwide fame.

The title track is a real stand-out for us and a long term firm favourite. 'Miss Cheryll', more of a disco/AOR jam, was released by RCA UK in 1980 as the track become popular within several London scenes.

It's some four years since the release of Bison's acclaimed debut single, 'Way To L.A', the result of a series of productive studio sessions between Paul 'Mudd' Murphy, longtime collaborator Ben Smith, krautrock legend Holgar Czukay and vocalist Ursula Major.
Since then, Murphy and Smith have made a number of return trips to CAN's Innerspace Studio in Cologne, where Czukay famously conjures his out-there musical magic. The result is Travellers, the quartet's long-promised debut album.
It is, by anyone's standards, a deliciously dubby and intergalactic concoction; a fearlessly atmospheric blend of krautrock and dub disco-inspired grooves, delay- laden horns, quirky percussion, stargazing electronics and eyes-wide-shut vocals.

Jamil Rashad, a/k/a Boulevards, is the embodiment of funk. Taking queues from pioneers such as Prince, Rick James, and Earth Wind & Fire, Boulevards seamlessly delivers cheeky, party-themed jams that range from raw and risqué to soulful on his debut LP Groove! From an early age, Jamil#s father, a R&B Radio DJ, exposed him to jazz, blues, and R&B. This pushed him to get involved in the city's local music scene early on in his youth. In his teens, he embraced the punk and metal scene in his hometown of Raleigh, NC genres that would later go on to influence Rashad's songwriting by way of their tight technical precision and power.
After an art school education and several stints in local bands, Jamil rediscovered and returned to his first true love funk. Boulevards evokes a spirit from a time that combined intricate production with a focus on rhythm and getting people back on the dance floor. With Groove!, Boulevards does just that. On tracks like #Patience,# Rashad melds pop with vintage hip-hop elements # think Eddie Murphy meets The Sugarhill Gang # and it just works. #Cold Call# introduces a slow hypnotic groove before a symphony of synths, creating a rhythmic cadence that stays with you even after the party is over. However, to give Groove! merit solely based on nostalgia would be a mistake. Groove! is not just a rework of a classic sound # it is an intelligent collection, an evolution to reign in a new era of funk # heard via the disco pulses on tracks like #Weekend Love# and #Up On Your Love,# nodding to industry giants like Pharrell and Breakbot. Bringing back producers Roller Girl! and Taste Nasa, who helped craft his critically received self-titled EP. Groove! delivers catchy songwriting, infectious bass lines, and plenty of hooks to keep you grooving until dawn, a clear indicator that there is still room for funk in 2016 # and that room will be occupied by Boulevards.

Thatmanmonkz - Columbusing Lp

Following two EP releases on Delusions Of Grandeur the time felt right for thatmanmonkz to get working on his debut LP. The Sheffield b-boy is no newcomer to production having been releasing music since the mid-noughties but has seen a definite rise in interest the last few years following essential releases on his own Shadeleaf label as well as remixes and productions for the likes of Classic, Kolour LTD and Kon's StarTime.
With his first musical love being Hip Hop it's easy to understand how his approach to house turns out so refreshing. Inevitably MPC's, big, bold samples, Jay Dee inspired grooves and a raw, underproduced sound all play a big part and never one to shy away from an interesting collaboration he has enlisted the skills of several vocalists including Detroit MC Ta'raach (whose credits include Slum Village and Jill Scott), Erik Rico (collabs include Ron Trent and DJ Spinna), Khalil, Dave Aju, Pete Simpson (as A Brother Is...) and Malik Ameer.
Things kick off with a low-slung soul jam entitled Air featuring Kahil Anthony complete with sparkling Rhodes arps and a dub-wise bassline underpinning a beautifully lazy groove. Jus Anutha Wunna Deez follows with a rough and ready house jam that clearly doffs its cap to those old Sound Signature and Mahogoni Music releases we know and love so much. Next up we have Boogie Down with Erik Rico rocking some Parliament inspired vocal business bringing the feelgood vibes to this rolling P-Funker. Some Ol' Nex' Ish goes for a jazz samba meets house fusion whilst A Fly New Tune goes strictly old school with a classic combo of dusty break, filtered fusion rhodes n bass sample, movie dialogue snippets and a masterful flow delivered by Ta'raach. Dave Aju steps up next on Turn It Out laying down a unison vocal refrain to compliment the bumping disco groove complete with a call and response section for some singalong party participation!
As we continue, Another Night Under The Glitterball sees thatmanmonkz back in familiar territory with a rock solid, deep jazz-house jam. On I Can Hardly Breathe we're treated to a downtempo gospel-infused affair which leads us perfectly into the most bumpy club- friendly track of the LP For Bae. Moon On The Hill is a collaboration with Italian DJ Kali and his Raw Standard crew and treats us to some distinctly mid 90's Kruder and Dorfmeister vibes to zone out to before heading off in an altogether more bonkers, psychedelic dancehall direction on Vampires. Baked is another classy thatmanmonkz take on Hip Hop featuring Malik Ameer on the mic. Take U 2 My House sounds like something Prince might have made in the mid-80's if he'd just come off a 3 day bender at Panorama Bar. And closing the show in perfect style and fashion we have For Those I've Lost Along The Way which is a blunted yet beautifully optimistic number that has echoes of Lonnie Liston Smith and a brilliant spiritual vocal sample which provides the perfect closer to an amazing debut LP.

Zackey Force Funk was born into this wild world in Tucson, AZ in
1974. In and out of prison since the age of 17, ZFF began producing on pirated software his brother gave to him once he had given up a life of crime to focus on writing tunes and raising his family. First discovered by Kutmah back in the golden era of Myspace, Zackey's signature Force Funk Sound' swiftly grabbed the attention of a number of formidable producers. As these tunes were scattered across various labels, finding their homes on their respective collaborator's projects, ZFF continued to hone his style, delving deeper into the psychedelic future funk realm of which he has created for himself. The fruits of his discipline all add up to Electron Don' (HNR52) a 15-track collection of early productions that serves as the initial
transmission of a fantastical mind that has many more stories to
tell. Electron Don' gathers together various unreleased and classic tracks recorded by Zackey Force Funk circa 2009-2011 in Tucson,
AZ. Included here are a treasure-trove of classic productions by the Electron Don himself, as well as tracks by luminaries Salva, Mike Gao, Lorn, Jellphonic, Cupp Cave, Crimekillz, Mark Lowe and Paolo XZ.

Anthony Joseph - Neckbone Ep

This Ep announces the release of the 5th album Anthony Joseph. These extracts are highly anticipated by his fans but also for music lovers Jazz / Funk. In this new track, Anthony Joseph chose to work alongside Sly Johnson and his talent to bring a piece in another dimension. On the devastating Neckbone', we found poetry of Anthony chanted in pure Caribbean style, not far from that of one of its models Linton Kwesi Johnson. For the chorus, from this Caribbean accent you could cut with a knife, hides Sly Johnson. A track made for the dancefloor with a big catchy bassline. On the B side, we find the percussive "Mano A Mano", poetry on a percussion avalanche in the purest style of the Last Poets.

Shrouded in mystery, hailing from Hamburg, Germany, Bacao Rhythm & Steel Band (BRSB) releases their long awaited debut '55' on Brooklyn's own Big Crown Records. Long time multi instrumentalist and band leader Bjorn Wagner spent a few months in Trindad & Tobago where he became fascinated with Steel Drums. His initial intrigue with local steel pan music culture led him to learning the instrument both through help of local players and on his own. After he became proficient on the pans Bjorn had his own instrument built from a used oil barrel by legendary pan man Louis C. Smith. Upon returning home to Germany, Bjorn set out to blend the Tropical Steel into his already sharply honed Funk, Soul, and Hip Hop sensibilities. The outcome is an updated take on a classic format, a truly unique sound. Their first
two recordings were covers of The Meters 'Look A-Py-Py' & 'Ease Back' which they self released on a 45. Looking back on these two sides you can tell they were just getting their chops up for what was to come next. This is evidenced by how all hell broke loose when they went on to cover 50 Cent's hit PIMP taking the DJ and vinyl collecting communities by storm. Many people thought the recording was the original sample and probably still do to this day when it is played. The original Mocambo pressing sold out quickly and is now a collector's item
fetching heavy prices when it changes hands. It was this tune that made the introduction between Bjorn and Danny Akalepse of Big Crown.
They immediately hit it off and starting making plans to do a full length project with the band.
Keeping in the tradition of Steel Drum records, 55 is a journey through re-interpolations and covers with an updated approach, pushing Steel Pan music to uncharted territory. Flawlessly bringing previously untouched genres into the steel pan cannon ranging from Underground Hip Hop tunes to staple Funk tracks and some of all that falls in between. From the smoothed out Reggae cover of John Holt's 'Police In Helicopter'
to the DJ sure shot cover of Faith Evan's 'Love Like This' BRSB's 55 is reinvigorating tunes both well known and helping to shed some light on tunes still largely undiscovered. However, some of the strongest tunes on the album are original compositions, from spaced out Disco vibes on 'Beetham Highway Ride' and 'Port Of Spain Hustle' to the ugly face inspiring drums of 'Laventille Road March'. Recorded to analog 8 track tape at The Mocambo Studios in Hamburg, 55 is a gritty, punchy journey in sound drawing on music from around the world, using production aesthetics from across both eras and genres, all coming together seamlessly. If the 45s that have already come out on Mocambo, Plane Jane, and Truth & Soul are an indication, this full length is going to be a staple to both casual listeneners and Disc Jockeys alike. Catch BRSB live in Fall as they tour the world with the mysterious heavy sound that is in fact, all their own.

Steve Black - Village Boogie

After starting his musical carrer back in 1968, the Nigerian artist, drummer, singer, multi-instrumentalist and producer STEVE BLACK released his fantastic and unique album "Village Boogie!" in 1979. "Village Boogie!" really deserves the status of a legendary rarity and holy grail for fans of afro funk music. The original album is incredibly rare today and fetches prices of 800,00 and more USD! On this unique album Steve Black presents a new version of the smasher - Brand new wayo', originally played by the band MIXED GRILL, in which Steve Black was also the singer. Along with that hit "Village Boogie!" gives us six other groovers and movers that make your hips shake like you were hit by an earthquake, and in fact this is an earthquake of ever pulsating polyrhythmic drum and percussion patterns, as solid platform for lush horn arrangements and swinging bass lines. A little bit of guitar and other instrumentation adds color to the whole wild steaming funky sound and on top we find the utterly distinctive voice of Mr. Steve Black. "Village Boogie!" omes as strong as the best US funk releases of that days, but in fact has this very special Nigerian power to make anyone move the hips, since this music comes from the very depth of the musicians' souls. The album spreads a joyful and jolly feeling where and whenever you make it rotate on your turntable. It's a brilliant afro funk gem that everybody needs to hear. The concentration of real anthems moves on a highest level. PMG soon will also release Steve Black's second album "Happy birthday to 'U'" and on top of that: Mr. Black is now in studio again to record a brandnew album for you - watch out for his new funk masterpiece, released on PMG!

The Ray Camacho Band - Reach Out

This 1979 release is one of the two albums by the disco outfit THE RAY CAMACHO BAND with bandleader Ray Camacho, exploring the field of the funky club dance music happening at that time. Original copies of this brilliant album go for about 800,00 USD among collectors. Now the brand new reissue of "Reach Out" enables us booty shakers to get into the ever pulsating grooves. The needle lowers down and hits the vinyl and a beat like flashing lights sets in. Bass guitar, regular drums and percussions weave a tight web of rhythm patterns that capture your body right away and set you into a state of trance. You recognize Latin influences here and there, which become obvious when the horns blow out lush harmonies and relaxed but hot blooded melodies hit your ears. And indeed Ray Camacho actually comes from Latin music and he mixes both worlds very well on this record. A massive collection of sheer disco funk hits that will give you a joyful time spinning the record, but leave no time for a short breath. You will dance and dance and just dance to these perfectly produced and executed songs that stick to your mind for quite a long time after the music has faded. "Reach Out" is an all in all handmade album with burning performances of all instrumentalists, with an emphasize on the extended rhythm section. If you love your funky music slick and steaming, be welcome to get this vinyl! PMG will also reissue the fantastic album MUCHA SALSA from Ray Camacho later this year, as well as other outstanding recordings.

Zdenka Kovacicek - Zdenka Kovacicek

She is one of the most significant and eminent figures from the Croatian music scene, and her career already goes for nearly 60 years. By the age of 13 Zdenka started being a professional singer with the duo - Hani' and later on she took a trip through the worldwide pop music scene, until her return to Croatia. By 1978 she was ready to release her first solo album, which is impossible to find and now fetches prices of 300,00 and more Euros as an original in good shape. It is a very colourful affair you are about to put on your turntable when you grab a copy of the newly released first ever reissue of this funky gem. Zdenka and her team of producers combined disco funk, haunting electronic pieces, lush soulful ballads and glam oriented power pop with a rocking edge together with one common denominator, which is the utterly distinctive and charismatic voice of Mrs. Kovacicek. She could easily be a black disco queen in the vein of Donna Summer and I certainly would consider that, if I did not have seen her picture before. The Croatian language adds a great touch of exotica to the whole album as well. The music itself is Western oriented, funky, soulish, bluesy and glammy, with modal jazzy elements. It feels honest and from the heart, from the first to the last song. You can say that Zdenka Kovacicek plays the music that was popular at the time, when this album was recorded, with a twist of her own spirit thrown in, which in the end makes it an outstanding and colourful record. Drop the needle anywhere on this black pearl and you will always be swallowed by an irresistibly hot groove and end up in a joyful mood. Watch out for more forthcoming releases of Zdenka Kovacicek on PMG!

Children Of Zeus - Still Standing

'Still Standing' is the debut single from the latest signings to First Word Records Children of Zeus. COZ is a soul project from two of Manchester's most respected artists Konny Kon & Tyler Daley. Konny Kon is a DJ, MC and beatmaker best known as one third of Broke'N'English alongside fellow Mancunians DRS and Strategy. Tyler Daley, also known as Hoodman went from being a respected MC and actor to one of the most in demand soul singers of recent times, lending his vocals and writing talents to music from Soul II Soul's Caron Wheeler, 50 Cent, Lisa Mafia, Bugsy Malone and more.

Whilst the likes of Dub Phizix, Chimpo, Zed Bias and Levelz are making waves in D&B, Bass Music and Grime, Children of Zeus came to break the trend and bring a soulful side that is much needed to continue Manchester's rich musical history. Over the last few years the duo have been releasing tracks through their Soundcloud, generating daytime radio play and legions of devoted fans. They are now finally ready to commit some of these recordings to wax with two tracks that represent the sound that they describe as 'future classic soul for sophisticated hoodrats'. 'Still Standing' is a Bilal-esque slice of neo-soul, a love-letter to the mother's that raised them, whilst on the flip 'No Strings Attached' blends dusty soul samples with a tale of life on the road and the temptations it brings. Look out for COZ's debut live show in London later this month and more new music very soon.

Henri-pierre Noel - The Reflex Revisions

Wah Wah 45s return to the 12" format to bring you three incredible re-works from French disco don The Reflex, for our very own legendary Canadian/Haitian keyboard wiz Henri-Pierre Noel.

Funky Spider Dance is a percussion heavy bomb filled to the brim with Henri's soaring piano licks and infectious female vocal hooks. The Reflex has taken what was already a sure-fire club favourite, and created something of a dance floor destroyer.

His rework of A Fifth of Beethoven takes its time to build into another heavy hitter. As the beats make way for Henri's deft keyboard flourishes, the recognition of this cover of the Walter Murphy classic (taken from the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack) begins to dawn - and as it does, it's clear that once again the dream team of HPN and The Reflex have worked their magic!

Last, but certainly not least, The Reflex's Revision of Back Home..., Sweet Home is a modern Island Funk masterpiece with organ and tropical guitar riffs making way for sunny brass stabs all underpinned by foot friendly beats.

The original versions of Funky Spider Dance and Back Home..., Sweet Home can be found on Henri's One More Step LP, and his take of A Fifth of Beethoven was recently available on 7-inches of wax - all on Wah Wah 45s of course. The Reflex Revisions all appear here together on vinyl, in fact anywhere, for the very first time!

Eddie Hazel - Game, Dames And Guitar Thangs

Among guitar aficionados, they don't come much heavier than acid-drenched enigma Eddie Hazel. A founding father of Funkadelic and responsible for the blazing "Maggot Brain" solo, he released just one album. A concentrated dose of guitar-driven psychedelic soul and loping funk-rock, Game, Dames And Guitar Thangs(1977) was co-produced by George Clinton and features the full Mothership crew. Despite impeccable credentials, the album sank and dropped out of print for years, becoming a sought-after collector's item for funkateers ever since. Mercifully addressing the dubious legitimacy and quality of previous reissues, Be With Records present a worthy and welcome 180 gram edition, limited to 500 copies.

Possessing a rare ability to be showy whilst maintaining subtlety, Hazel took Jimi Hendrix's style to his own new level. Here, his fuzz-tinged wah-fuelled guitar licks shimmer across seven brain-bending tracks, showcasing highly inventive virtuoso playing and searing riffs. The LP famously opens with the most soaring, soulful version of "California Dreamin'" you've ever heard. Eschewing the structure of The Mamas & The Papas' hit, Hazel slows the pace, adding a pronounced longing to create a truly emotive reworking. Virtually unrecognizable, Hazel's exquisite arrangement recalled Hendrix's rendering of Dylan's "All Along The Watchtower" and his delicately distorted guitar work propels the track into the stratosphere.

The much-sampled "Frantic Moment" - sumptuous head-nod G-Funk a full 15 years early - is essentially a Parliament song whilst "So Goes The Story" showcases Bootsy Collins' rubber-band basslines. The incredible, grooved out version of The Beatles' masterpiece "I Want You (She's So Heavy)" even manages to evoke early Sabbath. Using the original as a template to jam off, he turns the classic sideways into a monster guitar freakout, tossing off lick after lick with enviable nonchalance. The wild "Physical Love" follows, allowing Hazel and the sizzling Bernie Worrell to strut their stuff before funky instrumental "What About It" ignites pure dance floor fire.

Eddie Hazel was a pioneering guitar genius, but his troubled lifestyle led to a dearth of recorded material that demonstrated his strengths. It's a wonderful thing, then, that this lost classic is available on vinyl again. Possibly the finest slice of P-Funk you've never heard, it's a record that will make your brain dance and one every funk fan needs.
