With an estimated 500.000 inhabitants, Surinam has always had a lively music scene. Although the country is little known internationally, it has a very strong influence on the Netherlands, where many Surinamese people live. Music from Surinam is mainly known for its kaseko (which evolved out of the traditional kawina music) and soul music, but the Surinamese have also been active in other genres such as pop, funk & jazz.

Between 1976 and 1983, Surinam had a lively soul scene, with the output varying from eccentric soul tracks to more uptempo disco and boogie cross-overs. Nowadays, these tracks are becoming increasingly rare and hard to find. Kindred Spirits' compilation 'Surinam! Boogie & Disco Funk From The Surinamese Dancefloor '76 - '83' gave a proper introduction to these hidden gems and included the tune "Soul With Milk", from Sumy's 'Tryin To Survive' LP.

Rush Hour now continues its uncovering mission by making this 80s boogie and disco-funk album available again to a wider audience. "Tryin To Survive" is truly one of a kind... Expect a-typical pounding rhythms, striking guitars, and stabbing keyboards and synths.

Leroy Ace Miller was born and raised in Macon, Georgia, home ground for the careers of Otis Redding, James Brown and Little Richard. Ace was very close to securing his place in Macon music history back in the 80s with his recording 'Teacher', released by the indie California label Marina Sound run by Ron Patton. The following year Patton began a new label Baywest, which he immediately came back to Ace for two more sides. Today Leory Ace Miller is an Attorney in Macon Georgia, he spends every spare minute writing and recording in his home studio.

Twenty-two years after he was introduced to the world with 'Send Them' - the landmark left-field 12-inch that launched the Solesides label b/w DJ Shadow's 'Entropy' - Lyrics Born has made some of the most organic, original and adventurous
music of his entire career.

He turned the production over entirely (also a first) to his NOLA colleagues, giving them space to do what they do best, and him the freedom to write. Galactic guys Robert Mercurio and Ben Ellman wrangled a host of talent to execute the vision: Trombone Shorty, Ivan Neville, the Preservation Jazz Hall Band, Corey Glover (Living Colour), Corey Henry (Rebirth Brass Band), David Shaw (The Revivalists), and Billy Martin.

Sound like a fine balance between Benedek's hazy boogie and the tape degraded grit that's been a hallmark of Edwards work. Tip!!

2 years after the release of his first solo album, Favorite Recordings proudly presents SOLAR, second album by acclaimed Brazilian composer Lucas Arruda, and hundredth releases of the label!!

In 2012, Fabricio Di Monaco (from Modo Solar) introduced Lucas' music to Favorite Recordings' head honcho, Pascal Rioux, and one year after came his first solo album titled Sambadi, receiving great supports from many international DJs and media.

Following this successful first effort, here comes SOLAR, new and second solo album by Lucas Arruda, filled with his fusion style, mixing elements from his Latin musical background, with his genuine admiration for Jazz, Soul and Funk music ,

On Melt the Night' for example, Lucas asked legendary producer Leon Ware for his help, reminding his collaborations in the 80s with Marcos Valle, when they perfectly merged together the sophisticated Boogie and AOR touch from California, with the blazing sense of rhythm from Brazil. For the occasion, they also recorded a blowing version of Marvin & Diana's classic ballad Stop! Look, Listen (To Your Heart) with the help of Guida de Palma's (Jazzinho) beautiful voice.

For Uma Onda', he invites Alex Malheiros, bassist of the famous Jazz band Azymuth, for a splendid tribute to their specific fusion sound and influence on the Brazilian music scene. Finally the song Agua', co-written with his longtime friend Fabricio Di Monaco, is a beautiful ballad which illustrates perfectly Lucas' passion for Soul music.

On top of these great collaborations and a few more surprises, SOLAR also differs from its predecessor by a lot more elaborated production process, offering an authentic and warm sound. Mostly recorded at Sala A Studio in Brazil, many drums parts were also taken at the fully analog Ambience Studios in Finland. The mix was also done in Finland on a Neve 8108 console from 1978, using only analogic technology and a Studer master tape to record the final pre-master.

The result is a timeless album, which should definitely established Lucas Arruda as one of the finest and most talented Brazilian musicians these days.

Rudeboyz are Massive Q, Andile-T and Menchess from Durban. They make Gqom (or Gqomu or Igqom), raw, dark and hypnotic South African house music rooted in the townships of Durban, and shared with the world via the internet and social media. Gqom blares out at makeshift clubs, taxis and shopping malls, it is THE music in Durban. Gqom roughly translated from Zulu to 'Bang' or 'Hit' - It's uncompromising and stripped back music geared for the dancefloor. This EP has been a long time coming. Internet in Durban is woeful, which explains why a lot of tunes are at lower bit rates and equally why this release has been so long in the making. The EP opens with Get Down - the most direct and punishing of the four tracks with a punching synth and unrelenting kicks that do not deviate from their rhythm or their cause. Mercedes Song and Mitsubishi Song are odes to legendary presses of the pills that fuel the parties that run through the night. They roll for six unsettling minutes a piece - a long ominous drone underpinning the pounding beats. On Mercedes Song TD Snax adds to the unease as he shouts and yelps in Zulu: Yaze yangibamba weeh yaze yangibamba' - "This Mercedes has got me so high, this is my Mercedes.' Mitubishi Song, one of the biggest Gqom tracks of 2013, mirrors this unease switching between cascading toms and jolting, stuttering rhythms, cowbells and bird tweets. Sambuka Dance is an ode to a very different poison and its disorientating arrangement is reminiscent of its effects. A jarring, angry chant harasses incessantly transforming the track into a full body experience. As Jumping Back Slash eloquently put Gqom feels like music you've been listening to for years'. It is a ghostly cousin of sounds it touches on - brash, abrasive music with no inhibitions. These four tracks were handpicked from a vast catalogue of tunes from Rudeboyz built up over the last couple years.

After enjoying success and platinum discs with hip hop french band Saïan Supa Crew in the early 2000s, Sly Johnson released an album on Universal Jazz as a soul singer along his carreer of beatbox virtuoso.

On this EP, sly invited the future beats generation : the french beatmaker 123Mrk, recently signed on Flume's label Future Classics, the canadian Shash'U, and the mysterious parisian producer TAGi.

Late '70s Deep Miami Disco Remixed by Kenny Dope. Includes Download Card For Remixes AND Original Versions. This is the first official reissue of Pazazz's deep disco two sider, originally released as an obscure, promotional-only 7' single in South Florida circa 1980. And, while it took nearly two years, this 12' contains the excellent Kenny Dope's remixes of both tracks. Naturally, Kenny brought the funkiest parts of each track to the fore and, while they're DJ friendly, they're now our preferred way to listen to these tunes. We're using this as an excuse to relaunch our Soul Cal series (though fans of our physical releases will note that there was a Soul Cal logo on the Split Decision Band 7" we recently issued). Hopefully we'll have more of these types of records to reissue in the future. Tony Castellanos (guitar and vocals) and Tim Boynton (bass and vocals) founded the Zanzibar band in Miami, Florida, in 1974 for gigs at
the Bahia Cabana Hotel in Ft. Lauderdale, with the addition of Rick Gritz (drums and vocals). Inspired by the likes of Bill Withers and Steely Dan, Zanzibar played a soulful series of club dates and private parties as well as a their requisite beach hotel gigs at Miami area staples like the Fontainebleau, the Eden Rock and the Marco Polo hotel. In the late 70s, Castellanos changed the name of the band to Pazazz and, while the band was working for the Norwegian Cruise Line, he penned the band's first single So Hard To Find.' This and The Right One,' written by interim drummer Al Varon, who played on the single, were recorded and readied for release on a silver Pazazz label, complete with picture sleeve. It wasn't until Castellanos received five hundred copies of the single that he realized that the record was flawed. He demanded a second press run - this time issued on a red Pazazz label - but it too was, in Castellanos opinion, flawed. So the band decided against any sort of release, opting to gift copies of both versions to fans at their gigs.
The band split in 1981 and forgot about their single until Los Angeles record collector Mike Vegh found a random copy of the record and, impressed by the steady funk of Pazazz's soulful disco, tracked down Castellanos and brokered the purchase of the last remaining copies of his records. Vegh connected us with the man and we're happy to represent Pazazz's small, but great, catalog on this special 12'.

Conjunto Papa Upa made it clear with their 2013 debut single on Music With Soul - they would be the torchbearers of the modern day musical explorations of Venezuelan polyrhythmic grooves.
An oft-forgotten neighbor in the now heavily publicized and compiled sounds of Colombia, Peru & Brazil - Venezuela has historically featured a rich & diverse melting pot of sounds that share influences from the Atlantic, Pacific & the US. Perhaps it is in that unique blend of sounds, along with its combination of instrumentation & amplification that makes it equally hard to describe as it is beautiful.
Fortunately, Alex Figueira, no stranger to the cavernous depths of 1970's tropical music on wax - and known from his other project, Fumaça Preta - has continued in the buried traditions of his native Venezuela with Conjunto Papa Upa.
Their newest single, in true Music With Soul tradition, is another double sider; may you chose which song you want to make your A side. El Jalabolismo opens with a direct dose of 60's Sudamérica style surf-garage. An electrified combination of rock and roll, Guaguancó, Samba and Parranda through the looking glass of the scorching hot Caribbean coast. The relentless and pulsating lo-fi guitar riff gives way to the rebellious lead vocals, describing how an epidemic of systematic 'Ass Kissing' can destroy a country, in a clear reference to the current political landscape of Venezuela. Things build into the massive chorus declaration, a fundamental call for the ephemeral character of every democracy, and the need to preserve yours (if you're lucky enough to live in one), followed by a totally unexpected cuica intervention and a furious Timbales
solo. A mix you have probably never heard before.
Apriétalo, begins with the subtlest touch of an electrified guitar lick before the rhythm section begins chugging along effortlessly behind the mysterious, echo-drenched vocals of Figueira, this time possessed by the spirit of 'Chamo Ismael', one of the 'Holly Thoughs' of Venezuela (Google that up), warning all decent people of Caracas not to walk the streets at night, for all sorts of horrible things could happen. The trippy character of the tune is reflected on every one of the instruments recorded, from the hypnotic bass line and the disturbing wah wah to the pulsating voodooish rhythms of the maracas and congas and the inherent spookyness of the almighty semibroken combo organ, reminding the more familiarized listeners of popular Latin rhythms such as Cumbia or Salsa but with a more prominent African presence, a constant element in the music of Conjunto Papa Upa. Once again with this new single, Conjunto Papa Upa continues to blaze their own trail within the massive tropical community that permeates the worldwide underground scene, making it hard for most to believe that these songs have been recorded in Amsterdam, in 2015.

The first release on Athens of the North spaced out sister label 'Ocean of Tears' had to be something obscure, weird and brilliant so here we are...;.

Forest Terry was a tripped out intellectual from Boston who dabbled his hands in electronics and psychedelic funk. His former band "Original Black Sheep" released a couple of top notch psychedelic funk records that would cost you a small fortune if you could find one, this 45 (Forrest's attempt at a solo career) is even more obscure. 'Satellite Love' is crazy psychedelic sex ballad, I wanted to put this out the first time I heard it (and it took some time to make it happen) . The flip is also a banger, a heavy break driven low-fi funk 45 which Forest uses to show off his Tri-Speed Moog Keytar Synthesizer Guitar skills, which incidentally he invented and patented. As a nod to the O.G label and in the spirit of Forests do it yourself attitude I had a go a drawing my own Keytar for our label, hope you like it.

So hopefully this is the start of something wonderful, I label where we can put out those weird and wonderful records that don't fit anywhere else but deserve to be celebrated.

Athens of the north presents two of the disco floaters from our previously unreleased AOTNLP Original Friends and Buddies, both of these versions are on 45 for the first time. The Stripped down Version of 'Silence that you keep' benefits from the more direct tight Vocal. Without the synths there is much more space in the mix which suits the melancholy deep disco groove so much better. On the Flip 'Po Man' has also been stripped right back to its more basic elements also for the better, less is so much more.

Very welcome reissue of the 12' vinyl version of the superb 'Onda' from Brazilian soul legend Cassiano. One of the founding fathers of the scene, a contemporary of and collaborator wit people such as Tim Maia, Hyldon, etc., Cassiano only released a handful of LPs and singles but the quality made up for the quantity and this 1977 Polydor 12' features two of his best moments. Side A's 'Onda' is a lilting sun-drenched slice of pure soul heaven with a grooving b-line and sweet vocals that at nearly 8 minutes is still not enough - a truly captivating mellow masterpiece that you want to last forever... The flip side is no less accomplished - an upfront bass-heavy funk jam guaranteed to whip the dancefloor into a frenzy. Essential!

Excellent limited vinyl reissue of this top-class 12' on tiny Salsoul offshoot label Free Spirit featuring two highly in-demand disco funk rarities by NY outfit Cream De Coco. Written and produced in 1976 by the legendary Tommy Stewart of 'Bump and Hustle Music' fame, both tracks are superb examples of the genre packed with Stewart's signature brass, grooving keys and funky guitar licks. Side A's 'Wiggle Wiggle Wiggle' is an bubbling uptempo joyous jam perfect for the dancefloor or flip over for the fantastic 'Disco Strut', a smooth and soulful joint with a great low-slung sexy sound.

This record is as good as soul gets, no argument, more than the sum its parts, the perfect moment captured. Few records are coveted by so many rare 45 collectors as Fred Williams only outing on Solo records, hence a clean copy recently changed hands for £3000

I first heard this in the early 2000's when hardcore US Collector Dante Carfange & Chad Weekley (Memphix records) came to Edinburgh to D.J at our weekly club 'Motherfunk'. After their U.K tour many deepfunk collectors went after the single but the record has remained elusive.

Dante Carfange went on to compile the amazing Numero Group Compilation 'Eccentric Soul: Smart's Palace' which included both these sides. After meeting Rob and Ken from Numero Group in Edinburgh last year they kindly agreed to licence Fred Williams to 'Athens of the North' as a single so here we are at last, this amazing piece of music is finally affordable on vinyl. Just buy it.

Limited vinyl reissue of the amazing 'Rock Africa' album from 1977 by Malinga Five, a short-lived group made up of French, Caribbean and African artists. Released in France by Barclay, this hard-to-find afro-funk LP spawned a number of disco hits including an exhilarating uptempo version of Black Blood's 'Marie-Terese', plus the unstoppable bubbling funk magnificence of 'Kalimbo' later remixed by Bob Sinclar and the superb 'Kaloule Woman', a beautiful joyous track laced with intricate guitars and percussion with a great soulful vocal. Standouts aside, the whole album is fantastic from start to finish including hi-octane percussion workout 'Tambouye', laid-back funk groover 'Good Time' and blissful sensuous ballads such as 'Song For My Lady', the elegant jazz-funk of 'Vin Eve Nou', afro bubblers such as 'Kou Ma Ho' and Mankchine DouDou' and the synth-heavy 'Malinga'.
