Hip-Hop Vinyl New Releases - News

Incredible heavyweight new reggae/dub 12" featuring two legendary Jamaican MCs Jah Thomas and Little John, produced by Kalbata on Soul Jazz Records.

The Haggis Horns are one of the funkiest live bands you will ever see; a brassheavy funk powerhouse that has been rocking clubs up and down the country for years, combining breakbeat funk, soul, hip-hop and afrobeat with the virtuosity of trained jazz musicians. They are featured on the now legendary deep funk album "Keb Darge presents the New Mastersounds", and have performed and recorded with the likes of Amy Winehouse, Nightmares on Wax, Roots Manuva, Estelle, Corinne Bailey-Rae, KT Tunstall and The Cinematic Orchestra, to name a few.

Formed around the nucleus of Malcolm Strachan (trumpet) and Atholl Ransome (tenor sax, flute) The Haggis Horns (yes, they're from Scotland) extend to an 8 piece live outfit, with guitarist Ben Barker also taking a production role in their recorded output. Their debut 7" was released in November 2006, followed by the much sought-after 12 "The Traveller" and their debut album "Hot Damn!" to widespread acclaim.

Following the tragic loss of founder member Jason Rae early in 2008, the boys hit the studio to record the follow up to "Hot Damn!" They've teamed up with singer and fellow funk aficionado Nia Saw (aka Lucinda Slim) who has performed around the world with the likes of Zap Mama and DJs alongside Keb Darge at their long established Deep Funk night at Madame Jojo's in London's Soho. The new album sees them back at their funky best, with more brass stabs than a Victorian knife fight, more funky licks than a tramps dog and the sort of snappy backbeat that could cause whiplash unless properly supervised.

From the straight up B-boy funk of "The Jerk" to the Isley Brothers-esque disco funk of "Love Gets You High" and the vocal afrobeat of "Too Blind" this is another belter of a record from Scotland's answer to The JBs that is sure to restate their place as one of the world's premier funk bands.

Once again Aldo Vanucci and Featurecast team up for another banger for your box and this time they've brought along hip hop legends the Alkaholiks. A bouncy jazzy hip hop head nodder with leftfield hip hop mix by the Cinnamon Kings, a drum n bass mix by Darrison and current clubland hotness by the literally on fire Warrior One. Good Living Records do it again.

Pure Fire!

Greenwood Rhythm Coalition is back with a couple of low-slung tropical bubblers aimed straight at your summer barbecues and block parties.

Cumbia Kikuchi crackles with a hypnotic horn line and pawn shop synths, chugging along relentlessly like a Peruvian space cowboy on mellow coca leaves.

Regresar A Cali nods to lowriding funksters in both the Colombian city and its American namesake a bit further up the Pacific coast, playing kinda ruff with a Zapp-esque synbass that tangles with tropical guitar and percussion.

About the ARTISTS:

The flagship operation of the Names You Can Trust label, Greenwood Rhythm Coalition is produced and directed by Brooklyn stalwarts Monk-One and E's E. Having already put out a string of best-selling and critically acclaimed vinyl releases since 2007 (garnering play by the likes of Mr. Scruff, Quantic, Dom Servini and the Jelly Jazz crew to name a few), GRC continues to impress with it's unique hybrid of styles and influences aimed at discerning DJs and dancers alike.

Incessant uptempo UK funky meets electro ragga dancehall from Grievous Angel featuring MC Rubi Dan, new on Soul Jazz Records. Two heavyweight mixes of this killer tune. Featured on the forthcoming Kode9 Mix CD.

Brooklyn-based Afro-Funk juggernaut Ikebe Shakedown unleashes a fiery mix of sweaty Afro rhythms, deep funk, and gritty disco. These two tracks are taken from their debut EP. They were recorded at Dunham Studios in Brooklyn (Budos Band, Menahan Street Band) and have received a great response from press/radio (BBC6, WWOZ New Orleans). We are pleased to release these nuggets courtesy of Colemine Records (Ohio) on a limited edition 45 in beautiful silver and purple!

Well it's the long awaited return of the kids from the Heavy Duty Boot institute for delinquents and social misfits. HDB 005 is an essential box filler, each track a stroke of under the counter genius

The J.T.'s third 7-inch single release & the second release off of their fantastic Bread & Butter LP. No ballads, no B-side chill tracks, no extended solos, just two raw-ass funk cuts. Designed to get you out of your seat and onto the dancefloor.

After an excursion into the jazzier side of things on recent releases, Tramp Records is proud to announce another funky soul jewel from the mid 1970s.

Clay Brown, originally from a small town near Barnwell, SC (the birthplace of James Brown) recorded a couple of 45 rpm singles which were released on the Florentine label in the mid to late 1970s. "Walk With A Groove" has some of that funk thing going while "Everybody's Talking" is a bit more on the soulful side. Whatever, both songs are highly prized in European Northern circles fetching over $1000 each for original mint 45's.

From now on, all 45 rpm single releases on Tramp Records are limited to 250 hand-numbered copies.

Jo Stance is a new project by upcoming Finnish vocalist Johanna Försti and
drummer-producer Teppo "Teddy Rok" Mäkynen. With the release of the single
"Hey Girl!" on Ricky-Tick Records in June, they set up great expectations
for the upcoming full-length due out in the fall.

The new Beautiful Swimmers! After their amazing Simmers groove another batch of funk injected tracks. On Big Coast the Swimmers bring various inlfuences, from the reggae chunk, Sleeping Bag trumpets, and percussive tidal wave of the title track, to the 808 kraut spiral of ''Touch Base'', a cut that sounds like Tangerine Dream doing some heavy breathing in Ghana. Great ep again!

The debut single from Herma Puma - the transatlantic hip hop production duo consisting of Simple X (USA) and Pimpernel Jones (UK). Having met through a shared love of golden era hip hop and dusty library music records, they crafted their debut album Synchromystic over the internet.

Disposable Rappers features vocals from Simple X's fellow Chicago native Sensei Of Soul, dropping J5 style flows over a club-friendly funk break-fuelled beat. On the flip Psyche Out is exactly what it says on the tin - a trippy DJ Format-esque break track - again perfect for the dancefloor.

great funk remix form diana ross "i'm coming out" !!!!

Robert Aaron's music, with its range of saxophones and keyboards (piano, Hammond organ, Wurlitzer), has a unique style that is hard to find in this age of mathematical solos

Wah Wah 45s join forces with Germanys Mocambo crew and the new voice of sister funk, Gizelle Smith, to bring you two exclusive remixes that are gonna destroy dance floors in the 2010.

Japanese producer Swing-O (AKA DJ 45) knocked up his monster of a remix of "Time Is Right For Love" a couple of months ago without being asked, and similarly the mighty Boca 45 loved "Hold Fast" so much that he devised this party starting remix simply to play out in his DJ sets! So with 45 written all over it, the Mocambo boys decided to give Wah Wah 45s the pleasure of releasing these two sure fire club bangers on 7-inches of wax.

Check out Gizelles eponymous debut album, out now on Mocambo, and look out for more future hook ups with this raw and exciting new talent!

Vinyl only on this one, so dont sleep!!
