The Waxidermist - The Origami Case

To find Lawkyz, follow the beat. It is here, in this vital part, this lighthouse which guides the route of the other instruments, which it prints in depth the low notes of his four strings. Riveted on the Drums. linking with it a rhythmic pact, ensuring the propulsion of the groove on stage with Erik Truffaz or Guts; on records with UHT °, Anna Kova, or Versus, his hip hop project with full live band. When he puts his fetish instrument, when he lets cool his amp, then wakes up his evil twin: The Waxidermist. One year after his last EP, The Waxidermist comes back to tell his story.

Camp Lo - The Get Down Brothers + On The Way Uptown

In celebration of 20+ years since their classic debut Uptown Saturday Night, Bronx duo Camp Lo present a special double-album 2XLP with On The Way Uptown & The Get Down Brothers. On The Way Uptown features a collection of demos and unreleased songs made between 94' - 95', leading to their official debut in early 1997. Aside from the early versions of their hits Luchini (AKA This Is It),' Sparkle,' Black Connection,' and Coolie High', other standouts include World Heist', Coolie High Is Life' & A Piece of the Action'.

On The Get Down Brothers, Camp Lo completely pivot away from their 90's nostalgia into a much more futuristic and experimental sound. Although the production is different, their signature tongue-twisting and hype flows remain, creating a unique and seamless fusion packed into 10 dynamic tracks.

This perseverance has led to several acclaimed releases, and the opportunity to craft their newest album with the assistance of Grammy award winning producer 9th Wonder. 'Never Come Down' is a testament to Kooley's growth sonically and serves as their most complete work to date. MC's Charlie Smarts and Tab-One have elevated their wordplay along with DJ Ill Digitz' scratch work. In house producers, Sinopsis and Foolery also show inspired progression on 'Never Come Down', which showcases production from 9th Wonder's production team, the Soul Council as well. Features on the album include Jamla Record's own Rapsody, along with long time collaborators Median and Carlitta Durand.

Ten years after starting their journey in music, Kooley High comes full circle. This new album serves as a reminder to the world that even despite the current climate you should evolve, stay true to yourself, and Never Come Down.

The Herbaliser - Bring Out The Sound

The Herbaliser

Bring Out The Sound

2x12inchBBE451ALP / 155701
BBE
02.03.2018

UK hip hop's original and best live band are back with brand new album 'Bring Out The Sound', released in February 2018 on BBE Music. Founded in the early 90s by Ollie Teeba and Jake Wherry, The Herbaliser have earned every single accolade they've received during almost 25 years of touring and recording. Best known for delivering a series of groundbreaking albums on Ninja Tune and providing one of the all-time highlights of the
Fabric Live' mix series, The Herbaliser's most recent LP 'There Were Seven' was issued on their own 'Department H' imprint back in 2012. Having worked with hip hop royalty such as Jazzy Jef and Pete Rock over the years, not to mention releasing J Dilla's frst and last solo albums, BBE are delighted to share in The Herbaliser's musical journey. Inviting a carefully chosen group of guest vocalists to join them in their London studio, 'Bring Out The
Sound' presents a diverse blend of soulful songs, hip hop bangers and original instrumental funk breaks, made all the more impressive by its complete absence of sampling, an album from the heat of The Herbaliser. Famous for his pop smash 'Starz In Their Eyes' (sadly as relevant now as it ever was), Camden vocalist Just Jack lays down an incredibly moving performance over lush horns and strings on the instant classic 'Seize The Day'. The London Posse's own Rodney P spits lyrical fre alongside 28Luchi over the reggae-infused, unmistakably British beats of 'Like Shaft'. Former Senseless Things member and Libertines collaborator Mark Keds creates an almos uncomfortably intimate, confessional atmosphere on the intensely personal '20 Years To The Day' Compared by Mark Ronson to a young Minnie Ripperton, UK singer STAC's voice cuts through with a breathy kind of clarity on 'Over and Over'. But the Herbaliser band has always been so much
more than the sum of its collaborators. Languid,
powerful hip hop beats and uncompromising
production values underpin impressive
performances by all the band members, especially
the horn section who track after track, turn in
vintage performances. These guys make it all
sound so easy that by the time we reach
'Takedown', a track that sounds for all the world
like a forgotten b-boy anthem by The Incredible
Bongo Band.

Debut Lp offering from London rap group Jungle Brown. Having featured on SBTV with their Ep 'Take One', this Lp builds on a strong foundation. Sample heavy, with strong saxophone performances from Ayo Odia, the instrumentation is rich and thick in texture. Lyrically the group go from light and playful, to deep and introspective with great subtlety. Keep it Movin (a1) is a light reection of the group moving from Bournemouth to London, while 'In the City' (b1) is a gritty anthem detailing the arrival to the city.
Having a strong performance record behind them as well, the group's reach is good, both in the UK and abroad.

FRANK is the latest release from Dolfin Records, a Texas indie label with a prominent underground roster that includes rapper Lord Byron, producer Ben Hixon, R&B singer Jon Bap, and former Stanley Clarke drummer Mike Mitchell. Liv.e is one of the newer artists on the label, having previously collaborated with Hixon through a series of DJ parties in Dallas ( New Math Mondays'). Hixon and Bap have significant marks on this project, providing production, mixing, and background vocals. The beats they lend are often heavy on the drums, with short, hazy riffs that resemble Dilla-style syncopated loops. FRANK opens with a short hiss, launching into a jittery pattern of cymbals and drums, stinging bass slaps, and bouncy guitar riffs. You can almost see the tape reels rolling in front of you as the instrumental loops play themselves out with occasional flutters and skips. A chorus of voices enter with harmonies out of the George Clinton songbook, blending in behind the slow, finger-snapping beat. It sounds more like a lost, dusty funk recording from the '70s than an R&B song made in 2017. - Nitish Pahwa (Passion Of The Weiss) Artwork by Ghostdrank. Street Corner Music is proud to partner with Dolfin Records for this vinyl release.

  • A6: Better Terms
  • B1: I Will Excell
  • B2: Get Loose
  • B3: Black For Black
  • B4: Guanja
  • B5: More Power

An often-overlooked debut by Flint, Michigan MC Eric Breed, leader of DFC (Da Flint Crew, Dope Flint Connection, Da Funk Clan), who went on to collaborate with Tupac, Too Short, George Clinton, Slum Village, Jazzy Pha, Pimp C, Kurupt, The D.O.C., Hurricane (Beastie Boys), Amp Fiddler, Erick Sermon (EPMD), Bootleg (Dayton Family), and Esham. MC Bred & The DFC' peaked at #142 on the Billboard 200, #38 on Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and #3 on Top Heatseekers, impressive for an independent debut. The single was also a radio hit, getting run from KMEL in San Francisco to New York, leaving listeners hearing Breed's voice for the first time confused, unable to pin down his neutral accent, Flavor Flav's to the beat, y'all' stabbing intermittently, and the West Coast-flavored beat confusing matters further. The album relies heavily on James Brown samples ( The Grunt', Make It Funky', Funky Drummer', Funky President'), a can't-miss formula with Breed's voice over the beat, but the standout single from the album, Ain't No Future in Yo' Frontin'', a certified club anthem, is an inspired take on two already-established sample sources ( Funky Worm' and More Bounce to the Ounce'), but flipping the Zapp tune differently than listeners were accustomed to, providing a bass-heavy, atonal, lazy and almost non-music backdrop for Breed's lyrics, which in turn ran a line between incisive, funky and a fast drawl, sounding like an edgier Tone Loc, with apparent influence by EPMD or Audio Two. The end result was the first Midwest-originated hit' rap record, even the sampled artists (Zapp and the Ohio Players) were from Ohio. A surprisingly apt comparison is Cypress Hill's self-titled sample-heavy debut, also released in August 1991, both feature odes to marijuana, utilize a then-emerging dusted' sample style, feature audible clicks & pops on their sample sources, and were the first major crossover successes from their respective regions. And they're both solid albums, start to finish, with minimal guest features (none). Breed died in 2008 from kidney failure, unexpectedly ending his well-respected career at 12 albums, and after having paved the way for other Midwest artists Eminem, Common, Slum Village, Bone Thugs & Harmony, Proof, D12 and others.

  • B4: Pops Was A Rolla

  • B6: South Central Madness

Los Angeles' South Central Cartel were pioneers in the West Coast gangsta rap genre, in the same league as Dr. Dre, NWA, Eazy E, Ice Cube, Compton's Most Wanted, Above the Law, Da Lench Mob, Mac Dre and Kurupt. South Central Cartel (S.C.C.) was one of the first West Coast groups to gain national popularity in the immediate wake of groundbreaking and controversial releases by NWA & Eazy-E, and are still etched in hip hop's collective memory for pushing the envelope with their unapologetic embrace of gang affiliation, automatic weapons, violent crime, prison and car culture. South Central Madness' is their debut album, originally released on Pump/Quality Records, with subsequent albums released on Def Jam West in a deal between their G.W.K. (Gangsters Wit Knowledge) imprint and the West Coast division of Rick Rubin & Russell Simmons' label. Over a now-classic bed of sample sources (Zapp/Roger Troutman, Delfonics, Fatback, The Temptations, James Brown, Barry White, Funkadelic), with lyrical sample drops of their hip hop contemporaries (MC Breed, LL Cool J, Ice Cube, Public Enemy, NWA, Geto Boys, Big Daddy Kane), lyricists Havoc, Havik, Prodeje and Young Prodeje along with singer L.V. (later featured on Gangsta's Paradise' by Coolio) deliver a solid bridge from hip hop's established East Coast chart-dominating status quo toward the West Coast-centric G-Funk era', Crips vs. Bloods subtexts and the definition of what it meant to be hard. Videos for the singles U Gotta Deal Wit Dis (Gangsta Luv)'/'Ya Getz Clowned' and Papa Was a Rolling Stone' feature uptempo Havoc & Prodeje in black baseball caps, shades and curls that Eazy-E should have trademarked, riding and further extending the ominous Compton MC legacy. Ya Getz Clowned' actually samples MC Breed's Ain't No Future in yo' Frontin'', released just months before, tightening a food chain of club/radio DJ/producer sample/remix culture that was evolving fast in 1991. An interesting and maybe still unresolved footnote is that an unrelated up and coming duo from Queensbridge named Mobb Deep with members Havoc & Prodigy would release their debut Juvenile Hell' in 1993. Although their a.k.a.'s both parallel characters in the X-Men comic book, it's notable that two hip hop crews 3000 miles away from each other both arrived at the same choice for a set of stage names. Who came first' was a mildly controversial topic for a minute in the early/mid 1990s' East vs. West battles, with differing versions of the crews' possible early meetings being recounted in The Source & Rap Pages.

Special Ed - I Got It Made

Special Ed

I Got It Made

7"-VinylGET7287RED
GET ON DOWN
30.09.2018
  • A1: I Got It Made
  • B1: I Got It Made (Businesslike Version)

Very limited single, we are getting very few copies of this. I'm kinda young / But my tongue speaks maturity' Thus stated Special Ed, on his 1989 smash hit, I Got It Made.' And he backed up that brag throughout his trademark anthem, which featured laid-back brags that MCs a half-decade his senior couldn't mess with. The Brooklyn MC was only 16 when it was released, making him one of the youngest rappers - especially at the time, before the 90s brought us Kris Kross and Lil Bow Wow - to ever have a hip-hop hit. The song itself, which floated over a perfectly hooked up slice of Ripple's I Don't Know What It Is, But It Sure Is Funky,' was produced by Hitman Howie Tee, who also made waves in the late '80s with his cousin, Chubb Rock. When Ed and Howie combined, it was a match made in heaven, and the song exploded in New York before taking over worldwide. Eventually becoming sample fodder on dozens of later songs - from Fat Joe to Kendrick Lamar - the track still invokes heavy head-nods today from crowds of all ages. Also included on this special 7-inch is the Businesslike Version' of the song (also produced by Howie), which also appeared on the original 12-inch. Featuring a minimal, synth-driven backdrop and a quicker pace, it offers an excellent new way to experience Ed's forward-thinking lyricism. This unique, deluxe big hole' 7-inch comes housed in a custom Profile 45 jacket.

The Aroma - Aromatherapy Vol.1

The Aroma are a production unit from Bristol UK who supply a bedrock of masterfully crafted soundscapes for a very carefully selected set of guest MCs. The beats are created by DJ Rumage and engineered and produced by Rola (both from the mighty Bristol Hip Hop crew The Numskullz) with scratch wizard Sir Beans OBE on turntable duty.

Volume 1 has vocals supplied by Junior Disprol, Upfront MC (of Split Prophets), NK (p/k/a Blaktrix), NiLLa, Retna, MCM (of Caveman), Stepasaur (a/k/a Stepchild), Kelz (of 3PM) and last but not least additional vocals by Lizz.E (of the legendary Fresh 4).

At 8 tracks deep this album is short by modern standards but takes you back to a time when albums were 7 or 8 tracks long but overall were a higher standard. Too often now albums have 20 plus tracks with 10 or more fillers and quiet vinyl pressings.

Here you have 8 killers no fillers cut nice and loud and so gives a better sounding product which is something very important to Ruztik Records and AE Productions who have joined forces for this release.

Lovebirds Ft. Galliano - Icarus Remixes (2x7")

For Record Store Day 2017 Razor-N-Tape presents "Icarus," an original song by Lovebirds, with remixes from Tall Black Guy, Moods, and JKriv in a striking double 7" package.
Giving the shine to their 45 series for this year's Record Store Day, RNT welcomes back Lovebirds aka Sebastian Doering with a slice of chilled-out analog soul. Although primarily known for his nu-disco and house productions, Lovebirds is a seasoned hand at all things deep, and Icarus shows the smoky late-nite side of Basti's skilled production style. An all-original tune, Icarus layers jazzy vintage electric pianos over restrained but head-nodding percussion, with Galliano's soulful vocal soaring above it all. The ever consistent Tall Black Guy delivers a 90's-esque boom-bapper of a mix, with an added verse from 80's Babies for good measure. Moods works the track into a slo-mo stomper on his mix, complete with stuttering synth bass and driving percussion. And rounding out the package is RNT's JKriv, with a beachy stripped-down retro-boogie remix perfect for those warm-weather months to come. Kendrick Lamar - Damn. Collectors Edition

Kendrick Lamar releases a collector's edition of his critically-acclaimed record 'DAMN.'
The special edition flips around the track list, to give fans a listening experience of how Lamar initially envisaged the album prior to its April 2017 release.
When the Compton rapper conceptualised his album, he originally envisioned the tracks in a much different order to how they ended up on the final product. Kendrick had originally felt that the track-listing should be the complete reversal of what it is - so that it began with DUCKWORTH.' and ended with BLOOD.'

M-tri & Dj Leecy T - She's The Dj, He's The Mc / Trading Places
  • A1: She's The DJ, He's The MC (Extended Mix)
  • B1: Trading Places

According to The Village Voice, M-TRI & DJ Leecy T have the, 'energy and style that's made them mainstays of the New York
underground.' The Source magazine has named DJ Leecy T, one of '10 Female Hip Hop DJs Keeping The Culture Alive.' M-TRI & DJ Leecy T are breaking down the walls of obscurity with their fresh boom bap sound and distinct style of hip hop.
On his own, M-TRI (Emcee/Producer/DJ) was a capable hip hop architect, crafting acrobatic rhymes filled with clever subject
matter, wordplay, punchlines and metaphors over a vicious flow, but as a solo artist, he felt there was an element missing. Around
the same time, Felice was taking a break from modeling to follow her roots in music, specifically her love of hip hop. They met, and
M-TRI took on a mentoring role, helping Leecy T hone her craft. Before long, DJ Leecy T was born, guest deejaying at venues
alongside M-TRI and holding down the turntables during his live stage shows.

During this time Leecy T won the award for Best New DJ at the 2009 Rapathon (Hip Hop Culture Center) and became a guest
deejay on the Equilibrium Radio program, airing on 90.3 FM in NYC. A male emcee and a female deejay with an interactive live
show were immediately embraced, and they continue to prove themselves no mere novelty, having performed with eMC, Homeboy Sandman, Talib Kweli, Large Professor and Neek the Exotic, Rah Digga, M.O.P., Sadat X, Kool G Rap, J-Live,
Masta Ace, Marco Polo, Nitty Scott MC, Dana Dane, Grandmaster Caz and Grand Wizard Theodore, to name a few.
They digitally released their fantastic boom-bap hip hop album 'Monday Morning Music' in September of 2015, and it enjoys a
cult following for its old school flavour. In fact it probably was under the radar of many, including us! But when we heard 'She's
The DJ, He's The MC' on a DJ mix by UK DJ Paul Bloomfield, we immediately got in touch with M-TRI to see if we could press
a 45. Music this good has to be on vinyl, and this 45 sees an extended mix for 2018. The record perfectly shows the versatility of this talented hip hop duo, with them swapping roles on each side, tight cuts, sweet raps, boom-bap party beats and and whole lot of NYC flavour!
The duo recently completed their international tour of Czech Republic, Slovakia and France in August and September of 2017.

Beastie Boys - The In Sound From Wayout

Originally released through the Beastie Boys' French fan club, The In Sound From Way Out! is a collection of the group's funky instrumentals from Check Your Head and Ill Communication, with a couple of new tracks thrown in. The Beasties have a flair for loose, gritty funk and soul-jazz, and the stuttering, greasy keyboards of Money Mark give the music an extra edge -- he helps make the music sound as authentic as anything from the early '70s. Pressed on 180G vinyl.

Various - Gao Rap: Hip Hop From Northern Mali

Blissed out electronic Hip Hop from the Sahara. Gao's hyper-localized genre reinterprets western hip hop into a sound unlike anything else in the world. Auto-tune, melodic synth, and PC-based beats combine in abstract home studio experiments. Droning takamba meets Hausa synth pop, with a healthy dose of ragga. Obscure music that thrives on the local MP3 trade, this compilation highlights some of the most ambitious recordings of the past 10 years. Limited to 500.

Remember the old-school Marvel Team-Up comic book which paired, say, Spider-Man with Thor, Wolverine with the Human Torch, or the Hulk and Daredevil In the spirit of those classic collaborations, Gold Dust announces Parallel Uni-Verses, a joint effort between Hieroglyphics founder Del The Funky Homosapien and original Artifacts emcee Tame One. Produced entirely by Parallel Thought, the album's ten tracks return to a time when inventiveness, creativity, funky beats—and, above all, lyricism—ruled hip-hop. Oakland's Del The Funky Homosapien is one of the creators of the alternative rap genre, a perennial fan favorite who, in addition to releasing four solo albums—including 1992's seminal, gold-selling I Wish My Brother George Was Here--and two group albums with Hieroglyphics, was featured on the Gorillaz' epononymous, platinum-selling debut and Dan the Automator's sci- -themed concept album Deltron 3030. Newark's Tame One is best known as one-half of the Artifacts, a graffiti- writing hip-hop duo active in the mid- and late-90s, whose output includes the classic singles Wrong Side of Da Tracks' and The Ultimate.' In recent years, Tame has been a member of two underground supergroups: the Weatherman (with Cage, Camu Tao, and Aesop Rock), and the Leak Brothers (with Cage). Parallel Uni-Verses is that rare rap album which transcends tired clichés and maintains traditional hip-hop values without seeming retro or passé. Man, I ain't even gonna be egotistical like that and try to say that we are trying to usher in some new revival of whatever,' Del says. However, he adds, I'm a say this: we ARE the element that is missing, not (just) because I said so. That's what's up, we didn't sell out for all the luxury and monetary gains. The original ways, we kept at and built upon those.'

  • D2: Last Trumpet (feat. The Gift Of Gab)

20 years after its initial release, the Bay Area uber-classic Latyrx: The Album - lyricists Lyrics Born and Lateef The Truthspeaker, with production from DJ Shadow, Chief Xcel and Lyrics Born - still stands as a seminal recording. It has gone on to resonate with successive generations of listeners, and influence countless artists. Recorded over

a two-year period, it was the first full-length release from the legendary Solesides collective, and encapsulates a highly creative and influential time in hip-hop, frequently dubbed The Golden Age. Over the course of the original release's 42 minutes, not only can you hear Lyrics Born and Lateef literally growing into themselves as artists, but you can also hear the germination of the Solesides sound, first given birth at California's UC Davis in the early '90s, driven by brothers-in-beats-and-rhymes Blackalicious and DJ Shadow. Partially by design, and partially out of necessity, Latyrx—and the Solesides crew as a whole—became trailblazers. Lyrics Born remembers (in this set's lengthy liner notes), We really wanted to explore. New styles, new subject matter, new textures, new vocabulary. It came down to even wanting to do words in the English language that you had never heard in a rap song before. It was all about pushing.' And push they did, with game-changing lyrical exercises like Say That,' Balcony Beach,' The Wreckoning' and The Muzappers Mix.' Beyond cuts that back-in- the-day fans know from the original sequence, the two bonus tracks included in this edition are: Looking Over A City' (produced by El-P), originally released on the Quannum compilation Spectrum. And The Last Trumpet,' which closes this new deluxe edition. Originally appearing on the 2003 Lyrics Born solo album Later That Day, it's one of Latyrx's most-realized collaborations, and one of their most overtly-politically-themed songs. This deluxe, 2-LP issue of Latyrx: The Album is a must for longtime fans and newly-initiated listeners alike, with in-depth liner notes by veteran Bay Area journalist Eric Arnold (including input from Lyrics Born and Lateef The Truthspeaker) and packaged in a gatefold format.

Mf Doom - Operation: Doomsday

Mf Doom

Operation: Doomsday

7"-VinylMF1999-7
Metal Face
12.06.2018

As the '90s came to a close, hip-hop music was thriving in two separate ecosystems. On one side, Puffy's Bad Boy Records, Roc-A-Fella and the rest of the major label world was pumping plenty of shiny music by bling-ed out, made for MTV stars. These pop stars sold truckloads, but it felt like a lot of empty calories.' On the other side of the coin, a very strong underground scene had emerged in the mid-1990s worldwide. Hungry, innovative artists who had no use for the major label system thrived artistically in this ever-growing pond, ranging from Dr. Octagon and Jurassic 5 in Cali, Atmosphere and the Rhymesayers crew in the Midwest, and Company Flow and Definitive Jux in the East, among others. As the decade closed, from somewhere even beyond both of those poles, a man who would come to rule many corners the underground universe for the next two decades appeared from depths that were darker than most of his fans would ever know: MF DOOM. The artist formerly known as Zev Love X of major-label-but-underground heroes KMD had disappeared from most fans' view in around 1994 - after his brother and artistic co-producer Subroc was killed, and the group's Black Bastards album was shelved by Elektra. By 1997, DOOM started peeking his head up from the grime, with no-distribution singles on Bobbito Garcia's Fondle 'Em label like Red & Gold' and Dead Bent.' As other appearances and singles trickled through the underground, by 1999 the album Operation: Doomsday appeared seemingly out of nowhere, again on Fondle 'Em, and fans who actively ran from the glitzier side of rap music ate it up like they had been on a hunger strike. Musically raw and at-times off-kilter, former Fondle 'Em singles like the aforementioned tunes plus Gas Drawls,' Hey!' and Go With The Flow' were joined by a whole slew of new tunes. It all sounded familiar but new at the same time. It shouldn't be overlooked that in addition to the dusty, wobbling music, the former Zev Love X completely changed up his vocal style on the tracks that would land on Doomsday, chopping his flow up and bringing a whole new approach to his formerly liquid, and often humorous lyricism. Standouts on this bonafide underground masterwork are honestly hard to pick, since fans each have their own DOOM faves. But Doomsday,' Rhymes Like Dimes,' The MIC,' the experimental Tick, Tick...' (with MF Grimm) and Red & Gold' (with King Ghidra) are great examples of how stretched-out this visionary album is. This new 7' Collection edition via Get On Down includes seven 7's that run in order of the songs from the original issue (including interludes). The records are housed in a custom black leatherette outer-box that is laced with silver-foil renderings of DOOM's legendary mask and bubble graffiti logo on the outside, and a never-seen-before DOOM drawing by the legendary Lord Scotch, the original artist behind the Operation: Doomsday art, on the inside. In addition to holding the 7-inch vinyl, the box also contains two metallic-silver colored 45 adapters, each a 3D rendering of DOOM's gladiator mask. Picture sleeves for each of the seven pieces of wax all feature brand new work by Lord Scotch (Blake Lethem aka KEO aka Scotch79th) as well: new hand-lettered track listings on one side, and incredible new color illustrations on the flip that, when laid side-by-side, fit together like puzzle pieces, to form one large image. 1999 classic debut album presented as a deluxe set, with Seven 7's 2 unique DOOM 45 adapters, new artwork by original cover artist Lord Scotch, and customer leatherette outer box with silver-foil DOOM mask and logo. FEATURES: Seven 7's / Custom black leatherette outer box with silver-foil rendered images of DOOM's famed mask and logo / Two never-before-commercially available silver-colored DOOM 45 adapters / Each 7' has a custom sleeve designed by legendary graf artist Lord Scotch (Blake Lethem), who drew the original Operation: Doomsday cover

Few artforms are as apt to describing the fervour and tumult of human emotions as music is. Songs transport us to real and imaginary places, living someone else's experiences as our own, connecting with thoughts and feelings through melodies, rhythm and words. As a producer working primarily with the tools of traditional Hip-Hop - samplers, records, synthesizers - Onra has distinguished himself over the past decade as one of the best of his generation, capable of creating vivid music that sparks the mind of the listener and brings them along to uniquely detailed spaces, both real and imagined. On Nobody Has To Know', his fifth album for All City Records, the versatile French producer created music that reflects on the various aspects of a secret relationship pulling from R&B,New Jack Swing and Funk to soundtrack the passions of attraction. Stylistically Nobody Has To Know' picks up from the Future Funk style Onra originated on his 2010's Long Distance' (and its 2012 companion EP Deep In The Night' for Fool's Gold). Where those two releases mined the early and mid parts of the 1980s for ideas and references, the new album digs into late '80s and early '90s jams for smoother and richer sounds. Bolstering the record are two talented multi-instrumentalists, New Zealand's Lewis McCallum and Belgium's Pomrad, who bring touches of virtuosity to Onra's trademark smooth arrangements. The result is a record that, like its theme, oscillates between tender, torrid and tumultuous. Over its 13 tracks Nobody Has To Know' details the ups and downs of a secret relationship, from the excitement of doing something forbidden to the aftermath of living out fantasies. On "Let Me Fantasize" a rolling bassline and sparkling melodies capture the excitement of what is possible, the mind wandering into the forbidden. "No Question" taps into New Jack Swing to act out desires that can't be suppressed, exuberant solos echoing dangerous feelings. With its hard drums and smooth horn solos, and chorus of "Freak" takes you to that place where you can do things you only dreamed about. Balancing this intensity are more introspective moments. "Not Long Ago" rolls out gentle synth solos and nostalgic samples to reflect on past relationships and the very human desire to have what you had or can no longer reach. Rich textures and a languid rhythm underpin the reflective mood of "Nothing To Lose," as you wonder what could go wrong - it's a fine line after all. The fantasizing, excitement and danger of fatal attraction are all reflected through the prism of the music. With Nobody Has To Know' Onra deftly evolves the style he first began to explore a decade ago with his unique touch, re-affirming a unique sound rooted in warmth and setting the mood for some late-night escapades.
