Hip-Hop Vinyl New Releases - News

Wax Poetics Japan and Universal Music Japan proudly present a special vinyl collection of tracks by Common, who has become one of hip-hop's brightest stars, produced by J Dilla, the talented producer who helped Common bring out some of his best moments on wax. If you know anything about hip-hop, you're probably already aware of who Common is. After debuting with his single "Take It EZ" in 1992, the Academy Award-winning rapper/actor Common has established himself as an important voice in hip-hop. For more than two decades, Common has blessed the world with his music of love, self-awareness and upliftment, characterized by his thought-provoking, poetic lyricism and sample-based soulful production. Some of his most important work have been produced by the Soulquarians, the hip-hop/neo-soul supergroup featuring the world-renowned beat maestro, J Dilla. Wax Poetics Japan has curated a 2xLP marbled vinyl compilation featuring 12 timeless tracks from Common's three albums (2000's Like Water for
Chocolate, 2002's Electric Circus, and 2005's Be) that J Dilla worked his magic on. The twelve songs are certified classics loved by hip-hop fans worldwide. Instead of the usual black vinyl, we have decided to go with marbled vinyl, to symbolize the mix of the duo's singular talents. If you love Common and/or Dilla's music, this is one compilation you do not want to miss.

Wah Wah 45s are proud to present the third album, and first on the label, for vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, rapper, painter, carpenter, raconteur and one of the most talented and unique artists you're likely to encounter - Gideon Conn. Hip Hop Original sums this man up in those three words, and it's an album that tells tales of everyday life, love and relationships, politics, the law and even sport, all delivered in Gideon's unique style. It also delivers some of Gideon's most personal lyricism to date.

The album features some of the finest female vocalists working in the UK today - namely erstwhile Resonator, Bunty; Matthew Halsall collaborator and artist in her own right, Josephine Oniyama; a lady we first discovered via her work with The Boxettes, Yvette Riby-Williams; as well as regular collaborator, Hazel Tratt.

Hailing from Manchester, England, Gideon Conn is something of a one-off. His charming energy, quick wit and unique vocal often stun, and sometimes confuse, but in the end, audiences and listeners inevitably fall in love with this enigmatic, incomparable troubadour's warmth and showmanship.

As much influenced by Joan as Policewoman and Simon & Garfunkle as by Aretha and Stevie or Mos Def and Talib Kweli, Gideon's eclectic take on hip hop music is unparalleled with its soulful, humorous edge and intricate, inventive lyricism.

Having already garnered fans as diverse as Guy Garvey, Tom Robinson and Shaun Keaveney on BBC 6Music, Rob da Bank (Bestival) and John Kennedy (XFM) the next stage in Gideon's story is already eagerly anticipated by radio, press, festival goers and the army of fans he's garnered over the years.

"We Will Not Harm You" sees "UK bass legend" (Mixmag) Dobie release his first album since 1997's classic, "The Sound Of One Hand Clapping" (Pussyfoot). Thirteen tracks of deep, beautifully worked instrumental music, based in hip hop but touching on techno, house, dubstep, latin, twostep, jazz, soul, funk and everything in between, "We Will Not Harm You" is a work of art from one of the pillars of the Black British music scene.
Created over the eighteen months, "We Will Not Harm You" sees Dobie develop the style pioneered on his two EPs for Big Dada and take it still further. In combining his love of classic breaks with the most contemporary music-making techniques, his feel for soul with the essential rawness of his hip hop education, Dobie makes something unique and timeless. So "Blip 124" runs bleep back through the bloco, "Stan Lee Is Hero Of Mine" pits funk drumming against a snaking, evil, electronic bassline, and first single "She Moans" is an exercise in the interaction between percussion and bottom end, a kind of deconstruction of dubstep back into its consitutuent parts. Tunes like "The Chant" and "Crunch Factor No.5" are an insturmental hip hop as hard, edgy and psychedelic as anything coming out of the LA Beat Scene, "Snap, Crackle & Pop" takes the spirit of breaking and spins it out into space, "Magenta" re-thinks the house grooove. "Then I Woke Up," meanwhile, is an exercise in psychotic mood music, "Somewhere Over There" is the kind of beautiful, soulful interlude you'd expect to find on an obscure soul-jazz B side, while "She Wiggles When She Walks" is a shimmering, transcendent conclusion to a great album.

15 track single LP vinyl format of the album that was originally released in Aug 2013.

10 track single LP vinyl format of the album that was originally released in April.

The legendary debut album 'I Phantom' from Mr. Lif has returned. The concept album that Rolling Stone called "graceful" is finally available again. The classic project features Run The Jewels' EL-P, Aesop Rock, Jean Grae and more.

It was inevitable: since their first collaboration in 2012 for the making of the track 'Tá bom', the MC and the trio were constantly having their paths crossed, either in studio or on stages. It was then, on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the label in the beautiful Réunion island, and around a glass of rum and a cigar that the decision was made: The Journey will be release in October 2015 and the trip is about to start...
For its production, the three 'Chinese' disciples will draw from the darkest record bins: Banjo method, 30's music, flutes from the Andes... the goal rather is simple: step out from the usual territory used by the sample addicts and get as far away as possible from the hip-hop to then come back with new perspectives. Five of the titles were produced by Chinese Mab and one by LeYan and Tomapam.

In parallel, six instrumental versions complete the album, including great contributions from Hugo Kant, Le Syndicat Du Chrome and Scratch Bandits Crew. Tumi's texts, in their turn oscillate permanently between mockery and bitterness. Behind the humor and punchlines, Tumi shares his vision of the music world and his place in it.

In studio the group decides to foster a sense of urgency so as to preserve a rough aspect and a live energy at the heart of this adventure. The Journey is recorded in six days, in the home of the Chinese Man, in Marseille. For this project, the BPM are accelerated, the samples intertwined and the MCs' flows go back to the basics.

Tumi and Chinese Man chose to invite Taiwan MC for featuring and to bring forward the new guard of South African MCs with Khuli Chana and Youngsta CPT!

Eyes On Me" nachdrücklich unter Beweis.

Into The World"), Durchgeknallte wie der Ol' Dirty Bastard ("Brooklyn Zoo"), West-Coast-Stars wie Snoop
Dogg ("Gin & Juice"), Gangstas wie 2Pac ("Picture Me Rollin'"), Alternative Rapper wie A Tribe Called Quest
("1once Again"), East-Coast-Helden wie Nas ("Halftime"), Schwergewichte wie Big L ("Put It On"), 5-

2LP, Gaterfold sleeve repress. Deluxe Edition Remastered Vinyl set includes: Original Full Length Album, 3 Resurrection Remixes, Liner Notes by Brian Coleman w/Common. Catch Common starring in Hell On Wheels!!! Get On Down proudly present, Common's sophomore album, Resurrection. While the album was originally neglected by the mainstream, it has since received a great deal of critical acclaim and is now on The Source's 100 Best Rap Albums. In comparison to his debut album, Common's musical style evolved lyrically by his expressing of himself rather than just describing street life. With its Jazz and Hip Hop flavors, Resurrection furthered the growth of both genres. Overall, the album is commonly perceived as an underrated Rap classic and now this legendary album is available in a much anticipated edition.

[E] A5 In My Own World (Check The Method) Rap [Featuring] - No I.D

After a two year hiatus, the Hi-Ht Club returns with volume 7 of the Melting Pot Music producer series. The Hi-Hat Club layed the foundation of the German beatmaker scene of today and kicked off the careers of artits like Twit-One, Suff Daddy, Dexter, Brenk Sinatra and Full Crate. Back in 2009 MPM hooked-up with photographer Robert Winter with the mission to give the burgeoning a platform and a good look too.

A Long Hot Summer" is the fifth solo album of Masta Ace. The album is about Masta Ace's journey as an underground rapper through his "Long Hot Summer" in Brooklyn, together with his unofficial manager Fats Belvedere. This album includes fan favorites such as "Good Ol Love", "Da Grind", "Beautiful", "Bklyn Masala" and guest appearances like Jean Grae, Big Noyd, Wordsworth, Edo G, The Beatnuts, Rahzel and more. With great producers like Dug Infinite, 9th Wonder, Khrysis, DJ Spinna and Marco Polo, "A Long Hot Summer" is a classic Masta Ace album. The album officially came out in 2004 and now the CD reissue is being released by Below System Records. This 2015 reissue includes 2 new bonus

Durag Dynasty members Planet Asia & Killa Kali come through in
top form on this heavy hitting single from Pings 'Taking Hearts'.
With hard, rolling drums and some heavy dramatic horns Pings lays down a perfect bed of music for two of the west coasts most highly regarded emcees. Planet Asia & Killa Kali get busy to full effect with hard hitting lyrics that really match the production.
The track is topped off with some tidy cuts by Pings and the instru-mental version on the flip side.

Second album by Berlin born & raised producer now on Jakarta Records. Influenced by artists such as Pete Rock, J Dilla, Madlib or Kaytranada and mentored by reknowned german producer Figub Brazlevic.

I'm ready to bleed for the artform".

J-Zen is a French producer signed on Dooinit music, his style is a mixture of heavy beats and samples crushed to the point of making them unrecognizable.

He made his debut on the beatmaking scene with his first beat-tape called Breakfast, but it's with Guilty Pleasure EP, alongside Shawn Jackson and Substantial and released in 2010, that he really revealed himself to the public.

Since then, he's collaborated with Georgia Anne Muldrow & Declaime on the single 'God Music', a custom-made production for the California duo, and has shared the stage with the greatest (DJ Premier, Dilated Peoples,...)

His first album Managua is available now. Started between Rennes and Paris, recorded in California, Berlin, NYC, Paris, Portland, mixed in San Diego, mastered in LA and Costa Rica, this project and J-Zen have traveled a lot to finish their trip in Managua, where he stayed for a few months.

Run The Jewels released their hotly anticipated remix album made up of only cat sounds for beats, Meow The Jewels, for free on September 25, 2015.  Originally posted as a pre-order offering for their seismic sophomore album Run the Jewels 2, the group jokingly promised to remix the album using only cat sounds in exchange for $40,000. An enterprising fan called their bluff via a highly publicized and successful Kickstarter campaign which exceeded its goal. Instead of backing down from the absurd premise, El-P and Killer Mike have rose to the occasion, assembling a stable of immensely talented producers (including El-P, Just Blaze, Prince Paul, Geoff Barrow of Portishead, Massive Attack, The Alchemist, Zola Jesus, Nick Hook, BOOTS, Dan The Automator, and more) to help deliver the goods. The album will be released via Mass Appeal Records as a limited edition (one-time pressing), 2XLP tawny brown vinyl version housed in a gatefold jacket, this time with the iconic Run the Jewels album cover hands represented in actual faux fur. The record also comes stocked with a hand-drawn poster and a limited edition Meow the Jewels sticker sheet. This is sure to be one of Run The Jewels' most collectible records yet.

Kurtis Mantronik was always ahead of the times. Back when rap pioneers like Run-DMC and LL Cool J were rapping over stripped-down, minimalist beats, Mantronik, via his group Mantronix with MC Tee, was pushing the boundaries of hip-hop sonic landscape beyond hard drums and DJ scratches. With 'Bassline,' the signature track from his debut selftitled album, he fused electro-funk elements with vocoder and synthesizer, resulting in a dynamic new sound that was often imitated but never equaled. Get On Down is proud to present this classic single on a brand new 7' blue vinyl pressing, featuring the vocal and instrumental versions.

Virginia hiphop stalwarts MC Rapper Big Pooh & double Grammy-award winning producer Nottz team up to create a homage to their origins on their new album. The Lp version is a imited edition on 'Jade Haze' coloured vinyl .

This is the new album from former Little Brother rapper ('one of the best underground groups of all time', Earmilk), with production by 2 x Grammy Winner Nottz (Kanye West, J Dilla and Pusha T).

"Reinvigorated through the co-sign of Mello Music Group." - Hiphop DX (review of Rapper Big Pooh - Words Paint Pictures, 2015)

"Most people probably never thought Pooh could shine as bright for a full length without 9th Wonder. Apollo Brown (who has never made a mediocre beat) ensures Pooh's name stay in rappers' mouths." - New Noise (4/5 review of Rapper Big Pooh - Words Paint Pictures, 2015)

Mellow samples and snapping drums are the signature sound for this fresh new offering from KU founder Pings 'Peace'.
Featuring breakthrough Norwegian emcee Ivan Ave (Breathe ep) 'Peace' is a laid back affair with Ivan's educated and clever lyrics flowing nicely over Pings' simple yet full sounding production.
Includes the instrumental version of the flip side

Songs To Make Up To' is the follow-up EP to Ta-ku's critically acclaimed 'Songs To Make Up To' (2013). The EP's first track, 'Love Again' feat. JMSN & Sango, was premiered on NRP and amassed over 1 million SoundCloud streams in its first week.

Noise-rap pioneer, B L A C K I E, & Stony Hawk from BLACK BLADES, a crew from the Southeast side of Houston. Fusing the slow, laid-back style that Houston is known for w/ abrasive noise & aggressive vocals.

After his Melting Pot Music album 'Metronom' in 2014 FloFilz follows up connecting musical worlds on "Speakthru", his new album for Jakarta Records featuring Ivan Ave, Blu, Co$$, Juju Rogers, Chiara Noriko, Barney Artist and Anthony Dawn!

Hijack were a Golden Era Hip Hop group from Brixton, London, formed in the late 1980's. Their first single 'Style Wars' from 1988 caught the attention of the British Hip Hop community. Their next release 'Hold No Hostage'/'Doomsday of Rap' became an underground hit across Europe, bringing them to the attention of West Coast rapper Ice-T, who signed the group to his own Rhyme Syndicate record label. In 1989, they recorded and released the single 'The Badman is Robbin'', which reached #56 in the UK Singles Chart.

The group's debut album, The Horns of Jericho was recorded around the same time, and released in 1991. The group released the single 'Daddy Rich' which was popular in the UK. Uptempo, hard beats with some of the fastest rapping you'll ever hear on wax - this album is full of sureshots made for the hardcore Hip Hop crowd.

Numerous samples appeared on the album, just to name a few: 'In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida' and 'Apache' by The Incredible Bongo Band, 'House Of Rising Funk' by Afrique, 'Hyperbolicsyllabicsesquedalymistic' by Isaac Hayes 'Night On Bald Mountain' by Bob James

Fredfades is making his name in hip-hop circles worldwide as one of the most genuinely jazzy producers around. So what happens when he joins up with the gifted jazz trumpeter Kristoffer Eikrem for a full LP release
Needless to say, the project lives up to its title 'Jazz Cats'.
The two enlist several other jazz musicians on this innovative LP, as well as rappers like Ivan Ave.
Somehow the many voices and hands involved all fit smoothly into the format, as Fred's unique beat aesthetics and Eikrem's silky melodies solidly combine in an organic sounding piece.

A lo-fi hip hop record, full of noise and distortion of magnetic tapes and dusty record needles. The EP is a jazz musician's hommage to (and an archaeology of) the slow soul jam era of the 70s and 80s. At the same time it is also an anachronistic production tools workout and a jazzy tribute (co)created with VCRs, cassette decks and MPCs.

Glow is available in a 4-track 7'' vinyl option (rxtxv005) and in an extended digital format (EP) (rxtxv005d).

Over the last few years, the young jazz cat Žiga Murko has been making moves for a minute. He made his name as a trombonist who led his own jazz bands and collaborated with jazz legends. But in recently his focus changed and he started tapping lo-fi, lo-down, slow and gritty beats. In the short period of two years he's appeared on micro-labels from Anchorage to Slovenia and back to LA, Munich and Canada and created an impressive collection of EPs and (mini) albums. However, Glow is his first solo release on wax.

'Dats That Shit is a collection of beats I made that went on to became hits for various artists. These beats came straight from the Akai mpc 2000 and Akai 950 directly recorded to the Dat Tapes...Nothing was mixed or mastered and the beats appear in the form the artists heard them originally before we went into full productions....Enjoy the rawness and grittiness' - Diamond D

German production duo warm up for next album with a new 'beattape' of (mostly) instrumental productions for fans of Melting Pot Music's Hi-Hat Club releases, inspired by the likes of Madlib, J Dilla, DOOM etc.!

James "J Dilla / Jay Dee" Yancey leaves behind an impression on Hip Hop that will last the test of time. A bridge between Hip Hop's underground and mainstream, Dilla's contributions ranged from single handedly defining Detroit Hip Hop as a founding member of Slum Village to providing his production talents to Common, D'Angelo, Busta Rhymes, Erykah Badu, A Tribe Called Quest, The Pharcyde, The Roots, Janet Jackson and Macy Gray.

The Shining marked the reunion of J Dilla & BBE, who had released Welcome 2 Detroit, J Dilla's debut album. The Shining was near completion when J Dilla passed on February 10, 2006. In pursuance of his mother's plan that his musical legacy continue, The Shining was released on August, 22nd, 2006.

To add to that legacy, The Shining Instrumentals were released; allowing the listener to hear the intricate warmth of Dilla's beats completely untouched by MC vocals.

Detroit rapper/singer/songwriter & brother of the late great J DIlla & member of Slum Village, steps forward w/the able assistance of Potatohead People for a brilliantly-produced, diverse, & long overdue solo effort.
