Auf "Perfect Hair" versammelt der aus LA operierende MC Busdriver eine illustre Produzenten- und Gästeschar um sich mit u.a. Aesop Rock, Danny Brown, Open Mike Eagle und Produktion von Jeremiah Jae über Mono/Poly bis hin zu Driver! "Ego Death" ist ein Feature mit niemand Geringerem als Danny Brown und Aesop Rock - produziert von Jeremiah Jae, der zuletzt für beispielsweise Modeselektor, Flying Lotus und Nosaj Thing gearbeitet hat. Der Song ist ein Schritt in Richtung Math Rock, ein Aufruf zur lyrischen Bewaffnung und zugleich eine Ansagel des Künstlers. Zähnefletschend wie ein Rap-Marilyn Manson schleudert uns Busdriver ein "I'm not done yet" entgegen und trift damit hart. All das sagt uns, dass "Ego Death" eine Stange Dynamit ist, dort, wo die Sonne nicht scheint. Das Album "Perfect Hair" ist bereits das dritte von Busdriver auf Big Dada und klingt, wie "Die Enden der Parabel" von Thomas Pynchon eventuell als Rap-Album klingen würde. Das Album vibriert und oszilliert zwischen allen Extremen, besetzt Räume, die Rap bis dato nicht erreicht hat. "Perfect Hair" ist weder fröhlich noch depressiv, es geht weit über diese Kriterien hinaus. Busdriver durchbricht die beklemmende Autorität von Ablehnung und Ächtung und ist bei der Wahrheit angekommen. Er gilt als einer der dynamischsten Independent Künstler aus LA und hat Rap in den vergangenen Jahren immer wieder auf besondere und nachdenkliche Weise herausgefordert.

Als die Verträge bei Ersguterjunge ausliefen, stand Chakuza vor der schweren Aufgabe, seinen Fans und sich selbst zu erklären, wer er als Künstler tatsächlich ist. Der Kraftakt gelang, sein Four Music-Debüt »Magnolia« wurde Chakuzas bis dato beste Platte für Kritiker wie Fans. Vom Rapper der eher härteren Gangart mauserte er sich zum ernstzunehmenden HipHop-Künstler mit breitem musikalischen Spektrum und selbstreferenziellen Texten.Sein neues Album »EXIT« geht diesen Weg konsequent weiter. Es ist in einem Haus des Künstlerkollektivs In Vallis in der ländlichen Einöde Hollands, 80 Kilometer entfernt von Köln, entstanden. »EXIT« ist kein Beat-Sammelsurium, wie man es von anderen Rap-Platten kennt, sondern ein Gesamtwerk mit rotem Faden aus dem sprichwörtlichen einen Guss. Wahrscheinlich auch weil es mit RAF Camora nur ein Rap-Feature gibt, und mit Jonathan Walter und Maxim nur zwei weitere Gäste auftauchen, die dazu noch perfekt in die raue, melancholisch aufgeladene Textur von »Exit« passen. Die Songs basieren nicht auf HipHop-Beats nach Schema F, aber natürlich kann Chakuza nicht aus seiner Haut als Rapper. Mit so viel Energie hat man ihn schon lange nicht mehr am Mikrofon erlebt. In der musikalischen Welt zwischen zurückhaltendem Indie-Rock und hochaktuellem Cloud Rap fühlt sich Chakuza sichtlich wohl. Eines hat sich nicht verändert: Chakuza ist nach wie vor angefressen. Auch aus dieser Haut kann er nicht. Er raunzt und schnaubt, begibt sich in ein dunkles Loch, auch um sich dort nicht nur zu arrangieren, sondern vielleicht sogar ein wenig gut zu fühlen. Er motzt über die normalen Probleme, die jeder hat. Ohne Kitsch und Blumereien. Eine ganz spezielle Energie ist in Chakuzas Rap-Parts zu spüren, auch wenn »EXIT« in seiner Gesamtheit ein leises Album geworden ist. Ein Album, das keinen Lärm, Stress, kein Gebrüll braucht, um groß zu sein.

Born in war-torn Sudan he started rapping at the age of 13, practicing on a rooftop in Khartoum, learning English through Hip Hop and movies, working hard on his dream. Ten years of collaborations and projects with mainly local artists. It was an up and down struggle. Until that day in late 2012 when a friend told him about a German producer named Pawcut (Radio Juicy), who had just successfully released his first EP. Zen-Zin took his chance and contacted him... They turned out to be a perfect match.

Fatnice is multi talented to say the least. The avant garde MC, producer, singer, and writer grew up listening to tons of records and tapes from his aunts collections which were comprised primarily of soul and funk gems. A prolific house head, Fatnice became entrenched in the boombap sounds of hiphop via the roar of Melle Melle rhyming The Message in 1982. An avid writer of poetry Fatnice found it addicting being able to combine rhymes with beats to create music.
Born in Chicago and being in love with education, Fatnice traveled to Atlanta, GA, in 1992 in pursuit of higher learning at Clark Atlanta University. During his matriculation Fatnice continued to delve deep into the abyss of music via record collecting, checking out shows at the famous Funk Jazz Cafe, and battling MC's around the Atlanta University Center. Although Fatnice had been performing since the age of 11, he would get a true taste of the stage upon landing in the City of Philadelphia in the fall of 98.
Fatnice found himself in Philadelphia, once again pursuing higher learning and rocking open mics on the campus of The University of Pennsylvania's' Veranda Room(The Gathering). Shortly after his arrival Fatnice linked with classmate Darin Tolliver (aka Gamez) and became a member of Philly juggernaut Prophets of Ghetto having the honor of opening up for the likes of Public Enemy and Dilated Peoples. Upon graduating from PENN in 2000, Fatnice's decision to stay in Philly led him to a life of recording and traveling internationally with the now defunct Philadelphia based hiphop trio 84. Fatnice has had the humbling experience of working with greats such as DJ Cash Money, Bahamadia, Cee Knowledge of Digable Planets and a host of others.

Hailing from Nottingham, Cappo needs no introduction as a stalwart of the Hip Hop scene worldwide. He has worked with the P Brothers and many others and has a loyal following. L.A. spitkicker Blu and VA's super producer Nottz Raw are pleased to release their collaborative extended play release, 'Gods In The Spirit,' for the first time on vinyl. The deluxe edition EP consists of the six original tracks previously released exclusively via digital download, in addition to the Diamond D Remix and instrumental of 'Boyz 2 Men,' as well as the instrumental and acapella for both 'End of the World' and 'God Shit,' respectively. Gods In The Spirit boasts guest appearances from ANTHM, Homeboy Sandman, Sene, Johaz, Aloe Blacc, Co$$, Versis & Scienze, Definite Mass and Rashad, and showcases the chemistry among two of the industries most creative forces.

Shawn hat Egoprobleme. Atki2 has long been performing his unique strain of dancehall, bashment, dubstep, and jungle. Having co-promoted the Ruffneck Diskotek club night (a strong factor in Bristol's development as one of the globe's most exciting hubs for dubstep and bass music) for nearly a decade with Dub Boy and other local cohorts, he is deservedly a much-loved and respected member of Bristol's music scene. See his many releases on the city's top labels such as Punch Drunk, Idle Hands, and Immerse, as well as further afield imprints like Shadetek and Actress' Werk Discs, for whom he first recorded way back in 2005. With long-term partner Hanuman, Atki2 also helms Steakhouse Records, and the duo have been releasing bass-soaked music under the name Monkeysteak for several years. Solo recordings as Atki2 are rare, but these freshest fruits have a wonderful cockeyed dancehall characteristic to them, recalling the 1990s era heavily electronic styles of labels such as Fashion, Steely & Clevie, or Taxi, emitting twisted and often weird electronics, but all within a dagger inducing locked groove. These tracks have support from DJs and labels across the planet such as Dub Boy, Cardopusher, Ekoplekz, Oslek, Murderbot, Mr Gasparov, Idle Hands, and Iberian Records to name a few. Since his previous 7' 'Knock Knock', Atki2 has mostly been writing for The Dutty Inspectors. The Dutty Inspectors are Atki2 and Dub Boy, a DJ & production duo from Bristol. Their sound is a rowdy cocktail of soca, rave and dancehall aimed squarely at your waistline! This Atki2 solo release is his purely focused on his own style of dancehall, which is loads of fun on the floor but also make just fantastic instrumentals to put on this summer. Curated by Peanut Butter Wolf, Stones Throw is releasing a 4LP boxset to commemorate the late MC, Charizma and the collection of works he and Peanut Butter Wolf created between 1990-1993. The anthology includes rare, classic and unreleased tracks that makes up eight sides of vinyl, along with never before seen photos and ephemera. A lifetime has passed since the murder of Bay Area emcee Charles 'Charizma' Hicks who, in December of 1993 at the age of 20, was shot and killed at random while sitting in his car. Despite his short life, Charizma made an impression on everyone he encountered. Charizma's death deeply impacted his close friend and hip hop production partner Chris 'Peanut Butter Wolf' Manak, who at the time stopped making music (and everything else) for several months after receiving the news. Ultimately, however, it was Charizma's murder that gave PB Wolf the impetus to carry on and get their music heard by the world - setting up his own record label to do so. In 1996, Wolf founded Stones Throw Records and put out the first release, a Charizma/PB Wolf 12' single called 'My World Premiere.' Fast forward to 2014 and over 400 releases later, including the 2003 Charizma album Big Shots, Peanut Butter Wolf now presents a comprehensive tribute to his friend and musical partner, properly showcasing the full body of work left behind by Charizma over 20 years ago.With this posthumous release of an artist who was only 20-years-old when his life was cut short, hip hop fans can only speculate as to what heights might have been reached if Charizma was still here today.

Featuring Rapper Big Pooh and production by Quelle Chris, Nick Speed, and Danny Brown himself, Hot Soup immediately propelled Danny Brown into hip-hop's national consciousness and solidifed him as one of Detroit's most electrifying live performers. With his most recent Fool's Gold album carrying Pitchfork's 'Best New Music' status, fans are hungry for a deeper look into the mind of one modern hip-hop's most charismatic and controversial artists.

One of hip-hop's most consistent MCs, and notably one of a select few who has successfully constructing a solid discography since making his debut in '94 as one half of The Artifacts, El Da Sensei is more than familiar with the idea of what it means to Try Again. Opting for quality over quantity, the EP features a trio of songs alongside instrumental versions of each track. One of the reasons for El's longevity is that he never compromises his vision of what hip-hop is supposed to sound like and this EP is a true testament to his ethics. Lyrically El covers a lot of ground from introspective / mature verses over a mesmerizing piano-driven track provided by Joc Max (DJ Spinna), through braggadocio / motivational raps on'Last Round,' a collab with the outspoken Detroit DJ/Producer/OG HouseShoes, however, the standout just might be the D-Smooth produced, Redman-approved, 'Smoke To Me,' El's highly descriptive ode to his favorite plant. If this brief but potent 10' leaves you wanting more, rest assured El is gonna keep delivering, just as he has been doing for nearly 20 years. For all intents and purposes, Karl Hector might as well be another nom-de-plume of Jay Whitefield (producer and guitarist for the Poets of Rhythm and the Whitefield Brothers) who, along with Thomas Myland and Zdenko Curlija, founded Karl Hector and The Malcouns in the early 2000s. Alongside Bo Baral, other members of the Poets of Rhythm and crack Munich-based session musicians, Whitefield, Myland and Curlija crafted nearly twenty tracks for their debut, Sahara Swing, an album that swung with influences from across the African diaspora. The trio has since released two vinyl-only EPs: Coomassi will be the last, and is the opening volley of their Unstraight Ahead album, which will see release in summer 2014. As with the release of Tamanrasset and Ngunga Yeti Fofa, these seven songs demonstrate The Malcouns' deft handling of musics from Eastern and Northern Africa alongside Western psychedelia, jazz and funk. '...simultaneously loose-limbed and rigorous, generating a joy tempered by humid paranoia. It's party music that sets you on edge-and it's crucial.'

Madlib's Rock Konducta 2- the second of two rock-inspired entries in the producer's long-running Beat Konducta instrumental series. Madlib announced his Rock Konducta album with a limited edition 45 made specifically for sale at the Zamrock Live! Madlib Medicine Show in San Francisco in ealry 2013. It was a fitting place to make the debut, as his previous Beat Konducta in Africa album was heavily inspired by Africa's vibrant 70s rock scene, with a specific focus on Zambia's Zamrock. Rock Konducta - presented in two LP volumes - is the fifth installment in Madlib's Beat Konducta series. Previous entries include: Beat Konducta : Movie Scenes, Beat Konducta: in India, Beat Konducta: Dil Cosby and Dil Withers Suites and Beat Konducta in Africa. Rock Konducta grabs its source material from various worldwide rock scenes from the 60s through the 80s, from American psychedelia to Germany's krautrock to acid-soaked Spanish prog to synthy, early-80s oddities. Tied together by Madlib's unique sensibility, these scenes coalesce into a new whole. Who knew that rock music sounded like this Well, there's one obvious answer to that quesiton.

With his highly-anticipated fourth solo-LP, P.T.S.D. - Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, Pharoahe Monch re-emerges with a new concept project which finds the ground breaking emcee tackling PTSD; a severe anxiety disorder that can develop after exposure to any event that results in psychological trauma. Throughout the duration of the LP, Monch narrates as an independent artist weary from the war against the industry machine and through the stuggle of the black male experience in America. When Eminem recently named-dropped him ('But I still rap like I'm on my Pharaohe Monch grind) on his 'Rap God' single it was for good reason, as Pharoahe Monch has been at the forefront of lyrical innovation for two decades now. Not only is he one of Hip-Hop's preeminent lyricist, crafting intricate rhyme schemes and intelligent raps, but he is also an incisive policital and social commentator, using Hip-Hop as a platform for political engagement as his 'Bullet' trilogy hauntingly speaks to audiences in the same dark personification of a bullet.

Though Slum Village have gone through many lineup changes since their inception in 1996, the group's music has stayed powerful. Last year's studio release Evolution featured founding member T3 and newcomer Illa J (Brother of the late J Dilla, and founding member of Slum Village) atop a bevy of fresh beats from producer Young RJ, and remaining strong as ever. Evolution has set the stage for their next upcoming release, this summer's YES, following a 12-city tour in celebration of the life of their revered producer. To tide over the hunger of J Dilla-fanatics, Ne'Astra Music Group now presents the Vintage EP, a 10-track record featuring upcoming tracks from YES. Though Vintage is technically an EP, it's not to be under-estimated. Slum Village come full force on Vintage, backed by some premium grade beats (Including a few tracks built around long-lost Dilla beats) with instrumentals as a B-Side. Guest appearances from fellow Detroit MCs Black Milk & Frank Nitt, and up-and-coming rapper Kameron Corvet further bolster the Vintage EP's potency. A preview of great things to come from Slum Village, and yet another testament to Dilla's far-reaching legend.

Without doubt, funk is the father of hip-hop - and although disco is sometimes viewed as somewhat anathematic to that movement, it's worth remembering that for a while at least, it provided the vehicle that brought rap out of New York and presented it to the world - and the
results of these divergent musical styles crossing paths still resonate around the globe.
It's easy to forget or play down the importance of the Sugarhill Gang's 'Rapper's Delight' - an unusual, clever novelty record that was cocksure and playful, which burned up the commercial airwaves in 1979. It was followed swiftly by Kurtis Blow's 'Christmas Rapping', which also charted and gave Top Of The Pops its first on-stage rapper in early 1980. Although it wasn't yet referred to as hip-hop in the UK, rap had already made itself known to the record-buying public at large - and as the rap 12-inch single was barely a year old, this was an incredible feat for such a nascent scene.
The largely independent rap releases which had been slowly but steadily trickling out of the US would occasionally, like Sugarhill's appropriation of Chic's 'Good Times', take their musical cues from popular club tracks of the day - and disco-derived rap records were plenty. 'Rock It... Don't Stop It!' features a selection of forgotten or relatively obscure rap singles from the '79-'83 period, universally known as 'old school', which fall into this category. Inspiration for these vignettes from hip-hop's evolution range from classic party rockers by Cheryl Lynn, through to Yazoo (and, no doubt, 'Rapper's Delight') and the featured MCs give it their best shot with humour, earnestness and everything in-between. Although most of these hail from New York state, the under-represented Massachusetts shines alongside a prominent player which at the time had yet to find its own distinctive voice - Los Angeles.
Hip hop and rap are now a dominant force in contemporary music and have constantly adapted to stay relevant, drawing on and absorbing all around them. 'Rock It... Don't Stop It!' goes back over 30 years to their collective big bang moment.

One of Nickodemus' biggest influences in music has been the Native Tongue Movement of the 90's, so they already spoke the same language. The Real Live Show & Nickodemus have collaborated on several songs including "Give the Drummer Some, Sun Children, Gimme the Music, Moon People" & more. They were quickly into the concept of going back to our NYC roots with this release. BAM takes us to the 80's while Stimulus & Malik Work bring us to the 90's. The song hits hard with a 123BPM Electronic Acid House meets Hip Hop groove. "You know how we used to do it Back in the Days!"

The first full album from Toronto's Tre Mission, 'Stigmata' achieves something remarkable. He takes a genre which we think we know and which, in all honesty, he should have no right interfering with. Then he re-shapes it into something entirely new. Coming over as the missing link between Wiley and Outkast, Mission elaborates the connections (via his own roots in the Caribbean) between UK grime and North American rap and makes the whole thing sound as natural, as soulful, as hard and heavy as you like.

Bomb James is the first official side project from Italian Hip Hop veteran producer Bassi Maestro. Bassi, who's been djing and producing for the past 25 years, put together in one all the music influences that inspired him throughout this period, from Jazz to Chicago and New York house and of course funk, soul and Hip Hop. The concept is creating music the way it used to be, from producing with classic old school equipment (Roland 909, MPC60, Juno 106, Korg MS-20) and sampled vinyls to full analogue mixing direct to tape. The result is a punchin' throwback sound, to dance to (like the club banger "Do the Viki") or maybe just to vibe and chill to (like the 909 driven jazzy house anthem "4uattro").
