There are precious few, if any contemporary UK artists whose creative credentials and influence extend as far and so consistently wide as Freestyle Records most recent signing Omar. Since first breaking through to worldwide renown all the way back in 1991 with his first releases on Gilles Petersons seminal Talking Loud label, and going onto work with all manner of musical legends including a certain Stevie, Erykah Badu, Angie Stone, Syreeta Wright, Common, and Carleen Anderson. With willing, enthusiastic and supportive collaborators like that, it's undeniable that Omar maintains his reputation as a soul music Don par excellence.

Fast forward to 2013, and Omar's reputation for being a thoroughly original artist following his own individual path remains undiminished. After recently picking up an M.B.E for his outstanding contribution to theUK music scene, even the British Establishment has now acknowledged what many already appreciated & understood for many years.

Somewhere beween the percussive instrumentation of a Soundway highlife compilation and the rich, swathing synths of Neon Indian, resides Tropics, aka Southampton artist Chris Ward. Producing, singing, and playing all instruments himself, he was quickly picked up by Pitchfork for his 'lush instrumentation' and highly melodic, musically literate pop.

Following an EP and critically acclaimed album for Planet Mu, Ward spent 2012 producing remixes for Little Dragon, M83 & Polica. He then brought his voice to the fore for one of the vocal hooks of the year on Popup Cinema, the lead track from his EP of the same name for cult Serbian / London label Svetlana Industries.

Although Dilla is best known as part of the hip-hop world - through his work as part of Slum Village, solo albums and productions for Busta Rhymes, Phat Kat and more - his connections to house music also run deep, and he worked with Moodymann, Andres, Amp Fiddler and more in his time.

ordered, clean. The same could not be said of Copenhagen four-piece When Saints Go
Machine's second full-length album, 'Infinity Pool'. The opposite, in fact. It's a record
born out of an atmosphere of chaos.
It's harder, darker and more synthetic than its predecessors. It opens with 'Love And
Respect', which features a guest vocal from Grammy award winning rap artist Killer
Mike, who freewheels over chugging, synth-drenched beat. Elsewhere, 'Dead Boy' sees
Vonsild's tremulous falsetto digitized and then floated over a semi-ambient sounds-
cape, while 'Infinity Killer' pitches skittering sound effects against a low-end drone.
On the previous album, 'Konkylie', we tried to make machines simulate nature,' says
Vonsild. 'With 'Infinity Pool' we were trying to capture a feeling of the absurdity of
mankind trying to construct nature. Maybe it's something to do with being in the city.
You are always influenced by what's going on around you.'
It's also to do with the music that inspired them. 'There are a lot of references to the
early '90s on the album,' says Vonsild. 'It's not a rave album, but there are a lot of
elements of rave on there. 'Degeneration' sums up what we were trying to do. There are
some tracks on the album that could almost have been rave songs under other circum-
stances. I think that it's one of the songs that I don't think anyone else would have
made.'
Rather than go at these rave influences full tilt, they did the opposite of what might be
expected: they stripped them down and twisted them into new shapes.
The dark undercurrent that coloured the band's previous releases is intact, then. It's
something that makes the fact that When Saints Go Machine won a string of awards in
their native Denmark last year all the more surprising. Vonsild is sanguine about that
kind of music industry approval.
While it's nice to be liked, Vonsild says it's far more important to challenge people as
well as yourself. He says they felt nervous about the direction they took on 'Infinity
Pool', unease that they were operating outside their comfort zone. 'But,' he adds,
'that's a good thing. Whenever you feel a bit scared about putting something out, that's
how you should feel as an artist.'

Bambooman's production work is a little bit of an anomaly; on the one hand it feels infallibly clean with a heavy emphasis on the punch of his kick drums, but it's notably reliant on textures at the same time. The way he makes that level of contrast between the found sounds and the synthesized tones work is what first caught our ear through his own Sound Healers compilations and his remixes for people like Crewdson, but with his Hollowed EP the Leeds based beatsmith explores that tonal juxtaposition even further across seven original tracks.
"A large part of the EP is made up of recordings I have made along with sounds I have synthesized or vocals sent from friends," he offers of his processes. "It's a way I've been trying to work more and more. It's basically a collection of tracks which represented the styles I was messing with at that time."

Have beats will travel: Suff Daddy and Ta-ku have teamed up for a split EP recorded in Sydney and Perth, Australia. When Suff moved from Berlin to Sydney last summer he quickly hooked up with Perth based producer Ta-ku, best known for his "50 Days For Dilla" project. "Bricks & Mortar" unites two beatpals with pretty different soundscapes but one common mission: looking for the perfect beat!

The highs and lows bricks and mortar concept was established under the idea of two separate entities uniting to create something fresh and unique: be it through two different brands, two different shoes or two contrasting colour schemes - much like the binding of two sovereign elements to birth something whole, so is the sonic association between Suff Daddy and Ta-Ku for the accompanying "Bricks and Mortar" EP by working in alignment with the bricks and mortar canon. Suff Daddy and Ta-Ku collaborate to showcase the output that occurs when two producers from two different sides of the equator share familiar lane.
