Banoffee Pies Records drop their third Beats release 'Samba Del Sol' with Clifford Brown & Jeen Bassa Ft. Ella Mae Sueref - The album is influenced by Carnival and Latin sounds with Hip Hop drums and Soul roots - meeting in middle ground as an expression of the production duos upbringing, John's heritage in Mauritius and Cliffords childhood in South America. We head into the final quarter of the year with a very
welcome return to First Word from London producer,
musician, engineer and DJ, Eric Lau. Following on
from his acclaimed early 2017 album, 'Examples',
we proudly present the second volume - another
delectable 28-track beats opus.
'Examples Volume Two' is Eric's fourth
instrumental album, and ably continues where he
left off with an assortment of sonics, ranging through
hip hop, jazz, funk, soul & Brazilian beats. An
elaborate sketchpad of ideas and grooves, this again
gives a taste of the genius production skills of 'The
Commissioner', Mr. Lau.
A mixdown perfectionist, his services have been
drafted into service on a number of albums over the
past few years, including Yussef Kamaal's 'Black
Focus', Mansur Brown's 'Shiroi', The Playlist's
'Chasing Goosebumps', DJ Jazzy Jeff's 'M3',
Masego's 'Lady Lady', and Kaidi Tatham's 'It's A
World Before You', released on First Word recently.
It's through these recent collaborations that we have
a few unique ingredients peppered through this
project, the track 'Jeff's Piano' is based on a sample
taken from Eric's iPhone, capturing a moment when
Kaidi was teaching Masego a few chords at Jeff's
studio. Both integral players to the Playlist Retreat,
Eric and Kaidi have also provided remix duties for
Moonchild, Omar and Leon Ware, and Kaidi Kat also
lends his key playing talents to a few tracks here.
Eric has also worked as a producer for artists like
Oddisee, Guilty Simpson, Dego, Tawiah, Rahel and
Fatima, whilst his DJ skills have seen him tour the
globe with luminaries such as Erykah Badu, Robert
Glasper and Questlove. He's received props over the
years from tastemakers across the world, including
Rich Medina, 9th Wonder, Bobbito, Dam Funk, Phonte, Gilles Peterson, James Poyser (The Roots) and Ali Shaheed
Muhammad (A Tribe Called Quest).

(June 15, 2018 - New York, NY) Hip-Hop icon Nas - who's legendary career spans over two decades as one of the undisputed greatest MC's of all time - releases NASIR tonight via Mass Appeal / Def Jam Recordings. NASIR is Nas' 11th studio album, and his first new solo release since 2012's Life Is Good. NASIR's seven tracks are produced by Kanye West.

NASIR is the fourth of five consecutive weekly albums produced by West, each with seven tracks: Pusha T's Daytona, Kanye West's ye, the Kids See Ghosts collaboration between Kanye and Kid Cudi, Nas' NASIR, and next week's finale from Teyana Taylor.


Nas (Nasir Jones) first reached an international audience when his track 'Halftime' was tapped by producer MC Serch as the opening cut on 1992's Zebrahead movie soundtrack. Signed to Columbia Records, the first full-length album by poet and rhyme-master Nas arrived in 1994, Illmatic. The RIAA platinum hip-hop landmark featured 'It Ain't Hard To Tell,' 'The World Is Yours,' and 'One.' 1996 brought the breakthrough double-platinum It Was Written (#1 R&B for 7 weeks, #1 pop for 4 weeks), with his first major crossover singles 'Sweet Dreams' and 'If I Ruled the World (Imagine That).' Success continued with the double-platinum I Am in 1999 (again #1 pop and #1 R&B), with the chart singles 'Nas Is Like,' 'Hate Me Now' (featuring Puff Daddy), and 'You Won't See Me Tonight' (featuring Aaliyah).

Electronic prism-pusher Zuli explores themes of identity, both hyperlocal and global, in 'Terminal', his singular and definitive artistic statement for Lee Gamble's UIQ Expanding his sound to
encompass melancholic ambient composition and grimy rap from prominent Egyptian MC, Abyusif, as well as newcomers Abanoub, Mado $am and R-Rhyme, and mysterious Mecca-based vocalist MSYLMA, 'Terminal' finds Zuli drawing upon a multiplicity of personal experiences in a concerted effort to upend preconceptions of what an Egyptian artist should' sound like.
In Zuli's own words: In a world that feels like it's regressing into tribalism, many of us who don't fit into any one specific group identity feel sidelined at best. When people talk to me, whether it be the press or peers in the scene I operate in, I am often approached with a preconceived notion of pretty much everything from my influences to and tastes to my politics and lifestyle, solely based on my nationality. It is a caricature that has proven very marketable, one that makes for a more interesting read/conversation/booking, apparently, than a multi-faceted (hence unique) human personality just like each and every one of us.'
Across the 14 tracks of 'Terminal', the Cairean artist smartly unpackages and dissolves those lazy pre- or misconceptions by forming his own, syncretic musical language. Meshing the rhythmic grammar of hip hop and club styles with the Arabic dialects of his MCs and vocalist and the free syntax of ambient music, he dissolves and undermines outmoded ideas of exotification, presenting an image of himself that's more akin to the reality of Cairo and the sci-fi idea of P.K.D's scramble suits than any cliche conjured by music media. With controlled aggression and a gauntleted grasp of chaos, Zuli serves big highlights in vocal pieces such as the opener 'Nari', featuring all the MCs entangled in a noxious noise rap clash, which smartly contrasts the haunting plangency of MSYLMA's lament on 'Kollu I-Joloud'.
But the vocal only account for half o fate album, and Zuli really comes into his own on cuts such as the sparring grime instrumental 'Bump' and the sawn-off junglism 'Wreck', and the album's more delirious moments, like the poly-chromatic designs of 'He's Hearing Voices' and the heat-warped geolocators diffused into the ambient keen and astral jazz flourishes of 'Follow Your Breath'.

DJ Shadow has shared the artwork for his anticipated live album and film, Live In Manchester: The Mountain Has Fallen Tour.  Recorded at a sold out Albert Hall in Manchester, England, the release (out 13th July on Mass Appeal Records) is now on vinyl, CD, and digitally.

At a time when hip-hop was determined to snap your neck, a young, hip trio from Brooklyn (by way of Seattle, Philly, and Brazil) conspired on an uncommonly smooth new sound and freaky way of speak, a titanically chill expression of Black bohemia loaded with jazz idiom and a subversive Marxist bent—and pushed it worldwide via an undeniable crossover hit.

Digable Planets' 1993 debut, Reachin' (A New Refutation of Time and Space), unexpected to all involved, produced a massive radio hit in Rebirth Of Slick (Cool Like Dat)', which won the 1994 Grammy for Best Rap Performance by Duo or Group. Unduly lumped into an alternative rap' subgenre they chafed at, the Dig Plans were dismissed by some as one-hit wonders, coming out of nowhere, but the Digable Planets concept, and what became Reachin', had been in the works for close to five years, as group leader Ishmael Butterfly' Butler wrote music and soaked up game in multiple cities, navigating the industry of hip-hop's golden age.

In the end, Butler, Mary Anne Ladybug Mecca' Vieira, and Craig Doodlebug' Irving came together to create a seamlessly articulated vision of urbane hiphop cool with an uncommonly literary bent that subtly pushed the hip-hop genre's frames of reference and added breadth to rap music's burgeoning political philosophy. Drawing on inspiration from Butler's jazzbo father, the Black Panthers, Jose Luis-Borges, the Last Poets, and Jimi Hendrix, Reachin' posited a theory of universal beats', narrated by three unearthly MC's that had split to Earth to resurrect the funk', assuming curious, arthropodic aliases—a nod to the natural collective action of the insect world. In just four years the crew would record two beloved and ambitious LPs before disbanding.

Out of print on wax domestically since 1993, Reachin' captures one of the last gasps of rap music's jazzy, upbeat adolescence in the early 90's—those warm, blissed-out grooves every bit as slick as when they were laid way back when. Put this on, roll up with your crew and bug out again with the insect tribe.

For Cubans, El Tipo Este is the pioneer of all things hip-hop. As founding member of Obsesion, one of the nation's most notable hip hop exports. Early champions of his music included Gilles Peterson, who selected a track

to include in his 'Havana Cultura; New Cuba Sounds' compilation. Hot off the heels of this, El Tipo Este was enlisted to assemble the full band of musicians for the Havana Cultura tour. This unit played stages across Europe, USA and

closer to home in Latin America, and in turn this led to collaborations with The Roots and Mos Def For this long player, El Tipo Este he has enlisted beat maker France's Al Quetz to carry his rhymes. Originally known as Quetzal, Al Quetz is a crucial figure in

the world of beat making. A sound scientist whose cut, loop, program, paste compositions has seen him collaborate with the likes of Onra, Guts, La Fine Equipe and Milk Coffee & Sugar.

Best known for his work with CL Smooth, and his remixes for Public Enemy, House of Pain, Mary J Blige and Mick Jagger to mention a few. Hailing from the little town of Mt. Vernon, NY, right next to the Bronx, Pete Rock & CL Smooth pretty much got together in their local high school when Pete noticed CLs dope and unique voice. After high school, Pete hooked up a weekend hip-hop show on WBLS-FM and was considered one of NYs premier DJs during his four year stint on the show. All Souled Out was Pete & CLs debut EP, it was the phenomenal production by Pete Rock which really drew people to this EP. If the legendary DJ Mark The 45 King was the first producer to incorporate horns, Pete Rock was the first to really perfect this new style of production with his trademark echoing horns laced throughout his music. This was done very nicely on two of the cuts off the EP, Creator and Mecca & The Soul Brother, and people were taking notice in a big way.
After the solid Mecca/Creator 12 inch, the duo unleashed one of those all-time classic LPs every MC dreams of having, Mecca & The Soul Brother featuring the monumental: They Reminisce Over You, Straighten It Out, Ghettos Of The Mind, and Lots Of Lovin. slowthai's music is unmistakably British, treading a line between grime, rap, dubstep and garage - riding rough-edged beats with an adolescent charisma and confidence that recalls buzzy pirate radio sessions and handicam freestyles. He began releasing music over two years ago, while Grime was quickly solidifying its presence in the mindset of the UK's youth without the necessity of US Hiphop co-signs, slowthai's own brand of alternative UK rap was beginning to work it's way into the circles of truly engaged seekers. 22a presents a collaborative project with the Polish jazz septet EABS and featuring Tenderlonious on flute and soprano saxophone. Strictly limited to 1000 copies worldwide, this 12' of deep jazz is housed in colour sleeve and

includes an insert containing sleeve notes and photos. The Electro Acoustic Beat Sessions collective (EABS) are without doubt the most accomplished jazz group in the world right now. They have a unique and

innovative approach to music, fusing elements of Polish and classic jazz with hip hop, funk and folk. Their debut album 'Repetitions (Letters to Krzysztof Komeda)' is a dedication to Polish Jazz legend Krzysztof Komeda that focusses

on compositions by Komeda between 1962 and 1967. The album explores Komeda's lesser-known compositions featured in ballet etudes, movies, short films, documentaries and animations.

'Kraksa/Svantetic' is the final part of a dedication to Krzysztof Komeda, recorded straight to tape at Radio Opole in Poland. Polish jazz has had a big influence on 22a and Tenderlonious and working with

EABS became a priority after hearing their album. Tenderlonious was therefore delighted to accept their invitation to go out to Poland to perform with them.
