Electrodynamique - Lost In Dreams EP

Electrodynamique is an enigmatic alter ego of electronic music producer and DJ Kirill Rem. With this record, the artist introduces his own vocation for what can be pictured as an electro, synth-pop
revival, a wave that was most resonating in early 2000. The wondrous sonic palette embraces melancholic, robotic panoramas also including bizarre sampling techniques within an Italo music
framework. A vocoded and seductive drum machine groove and thrillingly spaced-out synth-scape will guide you undisturbed through themes of the artist's self-inspection.

EBM is a real time bomb. A time bomb because this sound will continue to influence a lot of other groups in the years that follow. The precursors created a new genre which they themselves baptized Electronic Body Music: a set of sounds, collages and extracts gleaned here and there, dynamized by intense vocal parts. Front 242 creates its own path and then lays the foundations of industrial electronic music. A development of rhythms which will be resampled in turn by a number of Eurobeat or technoid bands afterwards.

For Einstürzende Neubauten, it was ‘Haus der Lüge’; for Depeche Mode, it was ‘Music For The Masses'; and for The Cure, it was ‘Head On The Door’ - the moment when an honest album reveals itself to a wider audience and yet another group with an already solid reputation.

For Front 242, this passage is called ‘Front By Front’. Primarily, a hit called ‘Headhunter’, served by a magnificent video, signed off by the photographer and director Anton Corbijn. Boosted by the success of ‘Headhunter’, which remains their most famous title to this day, Front 242 finally emerged from the shadows.

Third iteration in OEW’s VA series, WITNESS03 brings over a fresh new quartet of heaters from another of its carefully curated cast of up-and-rising producers. Delving in the vaults of 90s rave, and spanning all things from atmospheric techno to spine-tingling bass, via electro, acid and further afield electronics.

Engaging first, CLJL flings a brick of breaksy sedition into the matrix with the mighty “System Research”. Fusing 303-emulated traction with jaw-crushing freq shifts, ruff snares and fluttering synth spirals gone astray, this one is pure woofer-busting material. Second in line, Naone “Silhouette” is an aggressive slice of dopey, bass-heavy cosmonautics, tailored to have the listener zoning out into a magnetic field of alien echoes, delays and reverbs.

Flip sides and here is LVCA and Sidd taking over your brainwaves with “Stranger” - a squelchy joint connecting the dots between Bochum Weltian spaciousness, pop-laced ethereality and a propulsive programming bound to astral project yourself into a whole other dimension. Last but not least, N-GYNN’s “Fire Rave” engineers a jagged and easy-going carnival of funkster machine talk, weird organic noises and sleazy boogie.

SWEAT IT OUT
21.06.2018

Sweat It Out up the perspiration levels to 10 with this modern day rework of Kwanzaa Posse's 1993 tribal infused 'Musika', by the much in form Yolanda Be Cool. A driving beat and dynamic bassline are interspersed with the Posse's euphoric chants firmly placing this a dancefloor destroyer. The first of three remixes comes from Babert. Turning Musika into a Miami Vice style synth laden boogie number, complete with uplifting piano stabs and a full bodied bass. Flip it over and things get a little more sinister. Both ideal for the basement club setting as much as they'd work in the big room clubs. GotSome revolve their remix around the chopped up tribal chants of Kwanzaa Posse - enhancing the expansive build ups and breakdowns to new heights.
To close it out, Dateless strips things back with a huge pulsating bass / kick combo whilst dubbing out the chants to be dropped in at choice moments before those heavyweight drops.

THEY HATE CHANGE - FINALLY, NEW

If it's really a post-genre world, why does everything sound the same? The two halves of Tampa rap duo They Hate Change_Dre (he/him) and Vonne (they/them)_first came together in front of the apartment complex where they both lived as teens. Dre had just moved down from Rochester, NY; Vonne was trying to sell him bad weed. It was clear from the start that the two listen to music differently from most people_they're sonic omnivores, obsessive deep-divers, lovers of rare and radical sounds. Starting as kids trawling the internet for tracks, they've been collecting music from around the world and across the decades, amassing a shared sonic knowledge so deep that "encyclopedic" barely begins to cover it _ not just the East Coast hip-hop that Dre grew up on, or the hyperlocal bass-music variants like jook (the Gulf Coast's twerkably raunchy answer to house) and crank (think "Miami bass meets NOLA bounce"), but also drum `n' bass, Chicago footwork, post-punk, prog (they're, like, seriously into prog), grime, krautrock, emo, and basically any genre on the map. Once they graduated to DJs on the Tampa DIY scene _ which includes everything from punk rock house parties to the black "teen nights" that pop up in rec centers and ballrooms _ they figured out how to pull all these disparate sounds together into a cohesive style. More importantly, they figured out how to make it something people will actually move to. When they made the transition to rapping and making beats, they brought that pleasure-seeking approach to sonic experimentation with them. "With this album, Vonne says, "it's really like, okay, you know how you talk about the internet breaking down borders? Here's what that actually sounds like. It's not just a hip-hop record with a couple more weird sounds. You want homegrown DIY? This is a record that was written, produced, and recorded in a 150-squarefoot bedroom from the least cool city you could think of." Finally, New is what a truly post-genre musical landscape is supposed to be: building deep connections that transcend outdated distinctions between them, spilling over with the joy of exploration and possibility, and daring other artists to think broader, go deeper, take bigger risks. Let the rest of them keep playing by the old rules_They Hate Change will keep changing the game.

CEM3340 - Suburbs Disorder LP

Repress

The enigmatic CEM3340 returns with his third LP. it's also the third outing on his very own Curtis Electronix, following a strong release from DJ Overdose himself. On the A side things kick off and go straight to the point with four highly sharped hard hitting jams, cut with the usual deadly precision. Firing snares and rusty 808 kick drums with a persistent old school feel; On the B side things morph and get more evocative with three classic-influenced electro bangers. No more words needed. Just drop the needle. This is Suburbs Disorder.

Tony Q & Barry Scran - Bout To Get It EP

Tony Q & Barry Scran, also known as production and DJ duo 't e s t p r e s s', substitute their well-beloved moniker on Bout To Get It EP and explore a more world-building approach to their productions; featuring four patient and intricate pieces in search of new ground.

‘You Should Be Listening’ opens up the A-side with its larger-than-life and levitating textures, held in suspense by its solidified groove. ‘Bout 2 Get It’ comes in steady, and hits pace at the one minute park; the track's bassline opening and closing for maximum effect, and a tantalising vocal-loop that helps build as much suspense as it keeps the track in forward-motion.

‘Vivarium’ show’s off the pairing's knack for hybridized methods, with its UKG drum patterns and trance-tinged leads; paired with a sense of optimism and world-building, it feels like a special and versatile record; fit for multiple purposes. Finally ‘Horsepower’ shuts things down with enough energy and grace to close any set. The duo unleash a barrage of layered brakes against a silhouette of hypnotic leads and gnarly bass; embodying many of the ideas and knowledge from previous tracks, into a breathless masterstroke.

Bonn - Never Ever

Never Ever

12inchPCR011
Polycarp Records
13.01.2023

Hamburg’s Polycarp Records delivers the ‘Never Ever’ EP by Bonn this January, backed with remixes from Johannes Albert and The Cruiser.
The Polycarp Records imprint was launched in 2016 by Simon Ferdinand and across its past ten releases has unveiled an array of material from the likes of Pleasant Systems boss Tilman, Frank Music founder Johannes Albert and Simon Ferdinand and Basch both under their own artist names and of course their collaborative project, Bonn. In 2019 Ferdinand and Basch inaugurated their Bonn guise with a debut album entitled ‘Forget Forgot Forgotten’, 2021 saw the release of a follow up EP entitled ‘Ravenous’ and here the story continues with the pair’s latest collaborative works.
The original mix of title-track ‘Never Ever’ opens the EP and lays down
crunchy, off-kilter drums alongside mystical atmospherics, an unfurling acid bass lead and loopy, fluttering stab sequences. Johannes Albert’s twist on ‘Never Ever’ follows next, the fellow German producer takes things down his signature cosmic, nu- disco path via bubbling arpeggio lines and 80’s tinged resonant leads melded together with fragments from the original composition.
‘Phero’ then opens the flip side and sees Bonn deliver a twitchy house
workout fuelled by fidgety synth bleeps, dubbed out chords and bumpy,
saturated drums. Last up to round things out, The Cruiser turns in a
high- octane interpretation of ‘Phero’, upping the tempo and reshaping the original’s raw elements into a murky, dynamically unfolding thumper.

Brazen - Aces & Eights EP

Well who would have bloody thought it. 20 releases on Holding Hands. That is bananas to be typing that out. It’s been a hell of a ride and I am over the moon to be able to confidently sit here and say that I still absolutely love every single release that has been put out since the first back in 2017. What a bunch of absolute slammers!
