The Swindlers return and not a minute too soon as far as we're
concerned! The hardest working duo in house music have had a
mental couple of years playing every club and festival known to
man, having babies, seemingly buying up the entire stock of vintage studio gear off ebay and thankfully knocking out some banging tunes on top of all that. Well all club bangers gratefully received here at Freerange so with open arms and ears we're happy to be bringing you the Figure Of Speech EP.
Just as the non-believers think they know what to expect from these two they've thrown a rather large curveball and headed down a different road. Figure Of Speech wears some African influences on its sleeve with a bumping party groove punctuated by some nifty afro beat keys stabs and just a hint of acid. Victoria's Secret treads more familiar Detroit Swindle territory with the boys trademark shuffling beats and larger-than-life side-chained pads bringing the drama. Finally, we have suitably titled Live At The Cosmic Carnival where we're treated to some peaktime tribal business with rolling bass, dubbed out dancehall science and some nifty conga work. All in all, some fiyah for the dancefloor from a pair of lads who know a thing or two about how to get a room jumping.

Al Massrieen: Disco, Funk and modernized Arabic Pop from Egypt

In the beginning of Habibi Funk, our search was focussed on vinyl records. Around a year ago though, we got to the point where we realized that it became substantially harder to discover music, that we enjoyed and hadn't heard before. It became apparent that it was time to start looking for other formats. Cassette tapes were the obvious alternative. These were introduced in the arabic world around the late 1970s. In some countries they took over a bit earlier, in others a bit later, but eventually they pushed the vinyl format out of the market in the 1980s. In Egypt this trend already even started in the late 1970s.

Al Massrieen was one of the first bands I learned about once I discovered the tape format for myself. They were really popular in Egypt in the 1970s and the more of their music I found on either tapes or Arabic pirate mp3 sites, the more I was becoming a fan. Only very few bands from the region can match the band's versatility as well as their strive for innovation. Hany Shenoda is the man behind the Al Massrieen band. He is a reknown figure of the Egyptian music scene and has worked with everyone from Abdel Halim Hafez to Mohamed Mounir. Al Massrieen was his attempt to introduce his ideas of modernizing Egyptian music, heavily encouraged by Naguib Mahfouz (Egypt's only winner of the Nobel Price for literature) after discussing his ideas with him. Al Massrieen's sound goes from lush disco like "Sah" to psych rock like "Horreya" or incredible jazz fused pop on songs such as "Edba Mn Gded". I was shocked to realize the band seemed to be hardly known outside Egypt, even though I feel they're at least on the same level as Ahmed Fakroun. An relative obscurity which I largely attribute to the fact that their releases never have been pressed on vinyl (apart from a Greece best of LP which wasn't a strong compilation of the group's songs). One way or another it felt like this band and especially their composer, band leader and overall brain Hany Shenoda was in need to get some recognition outside of Egypt. The release is fully licensed from the band and comes with an extensive booklet with liner notes, interviews and unseen photos.

Bas Roos is a DJ and producer from Rotterdam, The Netherlands. He started DJ'ing at the age of 16 after spending some time on making his own music. A year later he released his first EP and from that moment on he started to develop a unique and fresh sound which has seen releases on Phil Weeks' Robsoul Label as well as Shir Khan's Black Jukebox Disco House Series on Exploited. The 18th Edition of Black Jukebox sees the young producer deliver 4 new tracks which work magic on the dancefloor. Do yourself a favor and pick it up before this limited collector's item sells out.

After providing us with the boogie drenched Tempo Dreams Vol. 2 compilation, LA-based Modern Funk maestro "B. Bravo" is back with a new 7" that's sure to become a staple for the crates.
With that feel good bassline and soulful hook, up-tempo A-side single "I'm For Real"'s infectious keys will get the dancefloor moving, while B-Side track "Stay The Night"'s gets a very rare dubbed out remix from Hawaii's Mr. Carmack taking things to that tropical island vibe. Let the funk take you.

Boris Werner returns with 'Daymare Dreamer EP' featuring collaborations with noisemaker 'Gretz & Rival of Mars' as well as 'Cinema Royale' and two fresh solo tracks 'Dance of the Hump Back Whale' and 'Frustration (No Strings Attached'). This EP by Werner, known for his infamous 23 hour DJ set in Amsterdam, kicks off with the title tune 'Daymare Dreamer' riding it's way in at 7min40secs in total for a breezy welcome of classic Werner style house beats. This opening track bubbles with roots influence that fans will be familiar with as well as some slick vocal slices drifting in and out. Having previously realised mixes and podcasts alongside the likes of beat creators and funky jammers such as Dj Buck, Lazare Hoche & Malin Génie, William Djoko, and Dj Deeon this new release comes after many live shows and events including his live set from an old wine bodega. His summer calendar is booked up with international tour dates at some of the most spot on locales for dance floor showdowns. This wealth of tour experiences, inspiration and excitement can be felt from the jazzy Dance of the Hump Back Whale' through to the funky pulsations of 'Frustration (No Strings Attached). 'King Hassan a track created with 'Cinema Royale' features superb 80s style house/electro cow-bell samples, mysterious murky baselines and forward motion keyboard funk.

Now part of the family for more than a year, TvFrom86 aka Thomas Zander is releasing his 1st solo EP on the imprint. Tvfrom86 did a brilliant debut on Roche Musique with the single 'Loosing you' including the very good electro funk song 'Brooklyn Business'.

Keeping the good work and the talent for sampling, TvFrom86 explored the funk with dexterity and exactness in Purple People adding just what the sample needed to sublimate it and make it as powerful as it deserves to be. Creative Swing Alliance, side project of the talented label manager for MCDE, Pablo Valentino, and Steven Wobblejay, gave their own interpretation with and heavier bass and no less efficiency.

S3A was invited on the project for the rework of Flying Piano, the third original of the release. The French producer, very proactive at the moment with releases on Lazare Hoche, Hold Youth, Faces, Large Musique and more, definitely didn't steel his nickname. S3A Is telling us three stories in one with a rough analogic sound for an impressive result.

'The Inevitable End', is Röyksopp's second album release in the space of 6 months, following the critically acclaimed mini album 'Do It Again'

with fellow Scandinavian legend Robyn . 'The Inevitable End' is their most personal album to date and features Jamie McDermott (The

Irrepressibles), Ryan James (Man Without Country), Norwegian singer songwriter Susanne Sundfør and Robyn.

Having now created five complete bodies of work, the pair feel like the future is open to being more experimental with how they share their music.

'We feel like this is a goodbye to the traditional album format,' explains Svein. 'In our consecutive run of albums, we have been able to say

what we want to say and do what we want to do with the LP. We're not going to stop making music, but the album format as such, this is the last thing from us.'

Opening track 'Skulls' feels like classic Röyksopp - all squelchy bass lines, filtered synths and vocodered, yet soulful vocals - the album

also takes in sophisticated, delicate heartbreak on the Man Without Country collaboration 'Sordid Affair'; odd, shape-shifting ambience on

the Robyn-featuring 'Rong'; bouncing electro pop on the deceptively upbeat 'Save Me' and the deliriously sad, cry-on-the-dance floor classic, 'I Had This Thing'.

Tryck & Ton is run by Edvin E & Anton Klint. After a couple of amazing edit releases the guys return with the first original work from the newly founded label. Conga Liver is a percussion driven banger with serious highs and lows. The track gets remix treatment from Lisbons finest Tiago, who adds a discogroove, horns & an incredibly groovy baseline to the table. Final track 'On The Flip' is a playful groover sounding like Robotnik having a loud wine-impregnated argument with Tony Allen over who to host the afterparty.

The production pair, best known for their string of popular club singles have done the unexpected, announcing a cracking new set of tunes to compliment their already impressive back catalogue, along with a headline world tour that will see the guys conquer their biggest headline shows to date, via the likes of The Enmore (Syd), The Forum (Melb), Webster Hall (NYC) and The Regent in LA. Azymuth drummer Ivan 'Mamao' Conti's forthcoming self-titled solo project, remixed by West London broken beat pioneer IG Culture for a scorching club monster, alongside three future-funk remixes from 22a records family Tenderlonious, Reginald Omas Mamode IV and Jeen Bassa.

Ivan 'Mamao' Conti is one of the greatest drummers on earth. A true rhythmic innovator, he is Brazil's answer to Tony Allen, Steve Gadd, and Bernard Purdie (no small claim considering the country's famed samba connection). Known by most as one third of Azymuth, his career spans far beyond with over half a century's worth for recordings with the likes of Milton Nascimento, Eumir Deodato, Marcos Valle, Hyldon, Gal Costa and Jorge Ben. More recently Mamao recorded an album with hip-hop royalty Madlib under the shared moniker 'Jackson Conti'.

Now aged seventy, Mamao's work ethic is as strong as ever. In anticipation of a new Ivan Conti solo album set for release in 2017, Far Out Recordings have commissioned a series of remixes to be spread across two separate 12's. The first is a strictly London affair, with a fiery broken-boogie club monster from West London pioneer IG Culture, joined by the signature future-funk of 22a Records family Tenderlonious, Reginald Omas Mamode IV and Jeen Bassa. The second 12' will host remixes from Max Graef, Glenn Astro and Contours.

Melbourne's M5K...where G-Funk, Modern Funk, Boogie, House,

Diggin Deeper brings the funk with a Trans-Atlantic split EP from two edit masters.
Side A features Philadelphia disco don Michael The Lion, who has earned raves for his work on Soul Clap, Razor-N-Tape and Giant Cuts. His "Keep On Hangin' On" is a raw take on the classic "French touch" style - live vibraphone and bass elements to give a jolt of energy to a loft classic. With "Finally", Michael brings some nasty boogie funk with a groove that will give you the gas face. Side B showcases two tracks from Frenchman Jay Airiness, best known as half of the Parisian disco band Venice Beach. On "Funky Situation," Jay brings some oomph to a disco jazz groove that sails along. But Jay's touch is most evident on "Two of Us', a boogie-house banger that has made its way into a lot of well-connected DJs sets recently.
This 12" has four, diverse joints which can be dropped in different phases of an all-night party - a DJ's best friend!

For their first release of 2017, Phuture Shock Excursions venture further afield with an accomplished remix package, featuring two reworks of Nubian Mindz'(Colin Lindo) soulful house gem 'Somebody Else' - which appeared in its original form on last years 'EXCURSIONS' # 3 split EP.

On this bold occasion the Bristol imprint have enlisted the masterful talents of Cavern of Anti-Matter - the latest side project led by Stereolab co-founder Tim Gane. Having so far remixed songs by mainly indie-rock artists, the Berlin-based outfit turn their hand to the disparate realms of underground dance music for the first time. Also lending their seasoned expertise and going against the grain is Sean O'Hagan - the frontman of experimental indie-pop stalwarts The High Llamas.

Residing on the A-side is Cavern of Anti-Matter's epic reconstruction, which eschews the synth- heavy kosmische explorations they're widely known for, in favour for a more dance floor-leaning direction that takes Lindo's vocals on a funky, kaleidoscopic trip across the galaxy via 80s Detroit. Laced with crisp drum machine beats, groovy analogue synth lines aplenty and lush shimmering chords reminiscent of Gane's former groop, it sits somewhere between the raw electro-funk of Cybotron and quite possibly what The Neptunes would sound like if they made techno. While on the flipside Sean O'Hagan serves up a dreamy dub, where select fragments of the original vocals float across soothing passages of live instrumentation. Before the arrangement seamlessly flits between moments of jazzy electric piano grooves and swirling organs, through to melodic baroque pop interludes in 3/4 time - that probably wouldn't sound out of place in the scene of a Pixar animated movie. Shy of just three minutes in length, it's delightfully short and sweet, yet leaves you wanting more upon every listen.

Bristol based 'Ment' steps up again for Honey Glazed Records with two cuts of melodic house that are packed with life and soul. A side - 'A Kind Of Us' sets off its warm grooves with shimmering synths and a looping melodic vocal sample. The track builds, wiggles and morphs until an infectious trumpet hook breaks out. Ments' ability to carve out warm and heart-felt melodies is clear on both of his tracks on this record. The B Side - 'My Days' - sees him use a wider array of instruments to provide a more jazz influenced track. Amongst the dipping and diving bass and masterful tinkering on the keys, he still retains the dance floor in mind. The result is a very intelligent piece of music that will still get the floor moving.On the other side of this 12inch comes three quite contrasting remixes of 'A Kind Of Us'. The emerging talent 'Ross From Friends' brings his trademark lo-fi melodic touch. He creates his own unique hook, with synths from the original only used as a backdrop. Troy Gunner - fresh from an exciting release on Monki's Zoo Music, wastes no time putting his stamp on the original. The track opens with a beefy, hypnotic bass loop. Troy's trademark driving and menacing drums soon come swirling in. He then manages to twist the originals summery, warm synths into a dark and eerie break down before ramping up the hypnotic drums and bass again. Ramu returns to Honey Glazed with a funky 303 jam over cut up synths from the original.The result is a versatile EP that caters for lots of different moods and styles, all packaged inside a sleeve designed by talented Bristol artist and frequent Honey Glazed collaborator - Rosie Carmichael.

Following hot on the heels of the premiere release on Champion Sound in 2013 , next in line comes the work of prolific Northern Irish producer, T-Polar, whose previous releases on Acroplane, Saigon Recordings, Morris Audio, !Kaboogie Records and Rebirth garnered the support of everyone from Mary Anne Hobbs to 2562 to Boddika.
In keeping with his previous output and adding to what must surely be Ireland's deepest discography in electronic music (dating back to 2004), T-Polar (aka Gary Spence) releases Feetwork, an EP which hop-scotches genres, roughened up by the searing properties of hoover bass, teamed with tough, rolling kicks, nods to leftfield House and vintage rave, and peppered with skittering two-step grit.

The remix in the pack comes from the increasingly ubiquitous Unknown whose Youtube uploads and remixes have been setting the internet alight with speculation.

As usual FSOJ is compiled by Compost head honcho Michael Reinboth with a solid sense of leftfield tracks, punchy floorfillers, ghostly, cinematic, balearic, frazzled, bitter-sweet or mind-shaking hybrid tunes.
Several magazines voted FSOJ as the one of the best compilation series of all time. With this series starting 1995 the term Future Jazz became a genre landmark.

FSOJ 13 including some exclusives, sought-after tracks and previously unreleased tracks. Some highlights are: First of all the Van Hai track in a Ripperton remix is a perfect opener into a tranquil music venture. A sheer bliss tune. Montezumas Rache - Wu Du Wu', which was only released on vinyl before - still difficult to find the original 12' - is a freaky outstanding funk hybrid. Karim Sahraoui - with a punchy Detroit-ish track, picked up from Derrick May's Transmat label - is currently in the works with a follow up 12' later in 2017 on Compost. The three track EP features Teaspoon & The Waves - led by veteran alto player Teaspoon Ndelu. They released one album in 1980, covering a mix of disco and funk sounds for the SA dancefloors. Oh yeh Soweto is a cheeky version of Lamont Dozier's Going Back To My Roots - changing the lyrics and toughening up the beats, but with the same killer riffs. Saturday Night Special is from the same LP, a spaced out Afro Disco groove with excellent percussion and psychedelic synths, re-edited by the Sofrito team.

The B side features a track by the Nzimande Allstars - another mysterious group of session musicians. The drawn out groove of Highway Sporo Disco fuses a heavy disco backing with jive guitar and stellar horns and organ for a unique taste of the underground sound of the Cape.

You can say Wide Awake is an appropriate title after a wonderful 2015 with a string of EP's on Sleazy Beats, Razor-n-Tape and Rose Records.This four tracker explores the sound he's been developing over the years and even touches a newer side.
The EP opens with the title track 'Wide Awake' and embodies the signature Junktion sound with a summery balearic touch.
'What We Are' is a faster synth laden affair coupled with his usual sample action. 'Sunny Side Up' is what the title says it is, a sunny Disco track driven by a groovy bassline and a funky rhythm guitar. The EP closes down with 'Don't Mess Up' for a more contemplative jazzy track with some smooth sampling and afro touches.

Once a distant message written in the stars, the wisdom of Soul Clap has been beamed down to Earth in the form of EFUNK - Everybody's Freaky Under Natures Kingdom - their debut album on Wolf + Lamb.

The Florida based Brookside imprint have dug deep into the Philly master tapes and let NYC master-mixer Mike Maurro loose on a couple of stone cold classics from the catalog! Maurro, a Queens based DJ and mixer since 1986 has become one of the top remixers out there today with his own, faithful takes on numerous dance classics from the last 30+ years. Here, he tackles 2 cuts from Philadelphia International recording artists and Soul, Funk and Disco legends - Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes. "Bad Luck" takes up side-A of the 12", a glorious 13 minute remix that just oozes class. This one was made with DJ's in mind, extended drum breaks, elongated sections that squeeze every drop of sweet Philly Soul out onto the dancefloor. Side-B sees a fantastic mix of the evergreen classic "The Love I Lost", clocking in at just under 12 minutes. A slow burning version with the instrumentation and arrangements up front for the first few minutes before the track unfolds and Teddy's iconic vocals grace our eardrums. Incredible! From the realms of Buenos Aires' legendary and undocumented nightlife comes a new EP by DJs Pareja - who have been generously introducing us to their nocturnal dancefloor visions since the very beginning of Cómeme, shaping not only the label's sound and message but also influencing heavily the modern takes on Techno in Latin America.
Here's their EP "Alto" literally meaning "High", and this is where it's supposed to take you and surely will.
ALTO: The title track is up there, sleazy and ecstatic, with Mariano (ever responsible for the vocals in this outfit) incessantly repeating: "me siento alto" (I feel high), playing with this very literal translation into Spanish over a throbbing bass line reminiscent of the most sensual variations of crooning techno such as "Erotic Illusions" by Nick Holder or the most darkly seductive productions of Baby Ford or Closer Musik.


BWOO: This tune is direct; this tune is made for the impact on the body mechanics. We had to think of Munich, of Cologne in the 90ies but - true to the Pareja's credo, lacking of any nostalgia, instead looking forward with bouncing acidic euphoria that knows no yesterday and no tomorrow.
CLUB DE LA LOCURA: Always clinging to the utopic idea of the dancefloor as an unreal place of dream and magic, a place of craziness (locura), a place the aliens, DJs Pareja's "Club de la locura" keeps manifesting this idea, associating it with something obscure, and so they say: feline.
MAD BOX: The name refers to a small and very cheap synthesizer locally produced in the outskirts of the capital. It produces a crazy drone that is present throughout the whole track, Diego and Mariano also using other cheap and small gear and pushing it to its limits. The tune somehow sums up the different ideas and vibes of the other three tracks, their intensity and chaos, their electric sensations, being the probably most spaced out of the EP, and inevitably hypnotic and lysergic

Another killer release from the essential re -edits/rarities label Moton.Number 39 brings us three more obscurities lovingly edited by label head honcho Diesel with the funky as hell Feels So Good leading the EP. Kicking off the B side you will find a great Latin version of Ian Dury's Wake Up, then rounding off the EP is Discomora classically cut and spliced to perfection for your dancefloor pleasure.

Way back in 2013 we were a new label, and they were a new face on the scene.
Their hit record 'Camino de Dreyfus' helped propel both the label and the artist in to the established figures that both are today.
'Avalon' combines everything that's good about the Axes, with their signature New Wave sound taking in the tropics, but skewed through a middle eastern kaleidoscope.
'Sequência Astronomical' is familiar territory to many Red Axes releases, but takes everything either deeper, darker, or weirder than they've previously ventured, showing the huge growth in their confidence in the intervening 3 years since their last Correspondant EP.

Son Dexter is a talented producer who released two fantastic eps on Larry Heard´s Alleviated in the early 2000´s. His influences are really extensive and diverse: deep house, funk, pop, hiphop, jazz, broken beat, rock, T-Bone Walker, Black Science Orchestra, Miles Davis, Lenny Kravitz, Al Di Meola, The Intruders...and you can feel that in this Eternity ep. When the canadian artist sent them this 4 tracks ep, the Downbeat guys could not believe what they was hearing here.

Crafty selected underground house tracks by the man himself + unreleased hip hop beats on top of it.

Despite his artist name and his trademark sound, Steve Murphy does not come from Chicago, but from Mira, a little town on the suburban area of Venice.

Steve has been djing since 2001, and in the past years has been rocking almost every club in his region. He is serious and professional behind the decks: playing only with vinyl, he blends electro and house, techno and new wave, acid madness and pop appeal.

Steve has produced together with Die Roh an album ("The Chasm") and one e.p ("Windy City") on Chiwax, and a solo 10" ("Planet Earth") on Rawax, these records have quickly gone out of stock and that have been acclaimed by the lovers of the classic Warehouse sounds.

In 2012 he has started the Riviera project and has founded the Muscle Records label, together with Lucretio, Dj Octopus, Caio, Madì Grein and Chevel. The label is a facility to spread what has been called "the sound of Brenta": a raw, nasty, machines powered clash of house and techno. In 2012 he also released "The Dove Ultimatum" on Vae Victis Records, under the moniker of Durant: an unfriendly 12" of distorted electro and funky acid beats produced with Die Roh and Lucretio.

KDMS, the duo made up of London singer/songwriter Kathy Diamond and Silesian producer Max Skiba, return with a brilliant sophomore album of club anthems and torch songs, synthetic beats and live instruments. "The New Old Normal", out 9th December, follows their debut album "Kinky Dramas & Magic Stories" on Gomma.

On "The New Old Normal" Max Skiba (who follows last year's massive "Shanghouse" on Prins Thomas' Internasjonal imprint) presents his most mature and developed tunes, whist UK artist Kathy Diamond's vocals (known for her work with Maurice Fulton on Permanent Vacation records) reference the late 70s disco icon, adding charm and emotion throughout. Despite the album's overall pop sensibility, this is a set of eleven intricate tracks, touching upon multiple genres and quite often blending them all together: from breezy yacht rock, Paisley Park funk, Hall & Oates' blue-eyed soul to Kompakt-style house music. It's T-Rex glam and disco glitter, complemented with a techno cover of Kate Bush' "Babooshka".

On "The New Old Normal", Max and Kathy are accompanied by several high-profile guests, including the unmistakable Kurt Maloo of Double. Cover art comes courtesy of Filip Pagowski, the international graphic designer known for his work with Comme De Garcons and most recently for his artwork for Drake. Combining hypnotic rhythms with addictive pop melodies that carry clever lyrics - "The New Old Normal" is a rare achievement in today's formulaic world of club-inspired pop music.

We're really excited to be able to put one of our favourite ever WotNot releases to wax. It's a release that makes us particularly proud as we convinced K15 to let one of his house tracks out of the archive for the first time ever, as well as securing one of the few tracks to have been heard from up-and-coming wunderkind Glenn Kelly (Jeeks),before he retired early from the circuit.

REPRESS ALERT: With two massive reissues from Suns of Arqa and Jaki Whitren under their belts, the fledging label Emotional Rescue have come up with the goods once again, with this remastered reissue of incredibly rare 70s psyche-funk from Bob Chance. Two versions are included: the original 7" version, driven along by a razor-sharp guitar riff and sweetly lamenting lyrics, topped off with weird cosmic synths and galloping rhythm. However, the real gem is the edit entitled "Wild It's Broken" which sharpens the focus of the guitar and adds some serious kick to the drums to create a beefy counterpart to the new age original.

Volume 2 continues in this vein with a new pick 'n' mix bag of feel-good crowd-pleasers from EVM128, Body-san, Danvers and Galactic Ganesh, while Volume 1 also receives a long overdue (limited) press to vinyl, with a new added track from SexRulesEverything. Those familiar with EVM128 will place him firmly at the forefront of the new wave of broken beat artists. A highlight of his critically acclaimed 2015 LP Nova was Beyond, featuring soul legend Omar, and Warm 'n' Easy ft. Oliver Night stands in this vein but hits even harder, with smooth soulful vocals riding the strident rhythms flowing through the bass, drums and chords. Galactic Ganesh is a space elephant with serious junk in the trunk, evident in his outrageous grime and techno productions under another moniker (whose highlights include appearances on Black Acre and BBC Radio 1). Tell Me is a boogie-flavoured floor filler marrying the holy trinity of wah-ing synths, slapping drum machines and talkbox vocals.
Portland-based producer Body-san's much-lauded cassettes on 100% Silk and 1080p combine warm deep house grooves with 90s-flavoured digital synths and organic textures. Sensory Bin is no different, the spaced-out tape-warbled lead floating over delicious pads and a snappy beat.WotNot followers will have seen Danvers performing at various events, as well as hearing his brilliant Soccer96 remix alongside efforts from Danny Krivit and Glenn Astro last year. Hoxton 203 is sumptuously groovy; the moment those shuffling Rhodes cuts enter is a guaranteed level-upper on any dancefloor! Wherever the night's at, one of these will surely go down a treat, and it kicks off a string of new stuff from WotNot including releases from Danvers, K15, Charo and new artist William Florelle.

Mexican duo 4004 and Sebastian Vorhaus aka Soul Of Hex have had a great few years under their various monikers with releases

Mexico where they return to here following their debut 'Lip Reading'. This inaugural release was accompanied by remixes from Larry Heard and put Soul Of Hex on the map for the duo, with support coming from the likes of DJ Sneak, Art Department, Sebo K, Breach, Shadow Child and Huxley to name but a few.

Opening up the package is 'Intro (II Aura En Trois Fils), a piano laden sample heavy number with weighty analogue rhythms and a
smoothly cosseting feel throughout. Following is 'Sleep Mistakes ft. Albert Vogt' which retains a similar organic aesthetic bringing
jazz infused bass licks, loose percussive lines and soulful vocal stylings into the mix alongside bright Rhodes chords and hypnotic
background atmospherics. Tartelet Records artist Glenn Astro delivers a typically raw take on 'Sleep Mistakes ft. Albert Vogt' next, taking snippets of the rhythmic and atmospheric elements in the original but reshaping things into his own intricately programmed and unconventional house style. Rounding off the package is a third and final original from Soul Of Hex entitled 'Ink', which brings a more direct dance floor feel to things with ever evolving drums swirling around chugging bass hits and soft stab sequences.

Voyage returns with the discovery of an until now unknown artist. Unearthed from the hull of an abandoned discovery probe, the origins of Ausländer are undisclosed and unlikely to be uncovered. The three artefacts revolve around what is only understood as Ausländer's Theme, which is twice reinterpreted on the flip. No doubt made with machines, this wondrous exploration of thought, rhythm and undiscovered worlds is a welcomed addition to the Voyage catalogue.

After an impressive debut in early 2015, the boys behind the Soviet veil have slow-cooked another frothy sampling of off-kilter edits from the motherland (or somewhere). Never mind the long pause between releases, the tenacious attention to detail shows on all four jams. This is one to pick up if you're a serious club DJ or not, really.

Super deep Chicago business from the mysterious Doctor Mixxx on the tiny, obscure Trax offshoot Zig-Zag. Originally released in 1993, this 3 track EP still sounds fresh today, in fact one could argue that people still try to emulate this style of Chicago House music! Deep, raw and oozing soul the 3 cuts on Zig-Zag 2 will definitely find a place in any self respecting house heads DJ set. Remastered & re-issued for 2016's dancefloors in conjunction with trax records, another dope rarity culled from the vaults - Snoozing not advised!

Nascent London label Ex-Local announces its arrival with a new 5-track EP from South London talent Kxngs. With an extensive back catalogue that includes a release on the LA collective Soulection's imprint (as Kings in 2012) - as well as self-released album earlys & EPs that can all be found on his Bandcamp page - the 25-year-old Brixton resident has been winning admirers on his own terms whilst studying Sound Arts at the University Of The Arts London which offered him an escape from a year living homeless on the city's streets.
The scope of Kxngs work on this EP draws on global travels, particularly Africa, as well as Deepak Chopra's 'The Seven Spiritual Laws of Success' - a book that Kxngs cites as having helped him "gain enlightenment and self-awareness, helping to not only focus on everyday life but also my creativity". The Earth Sign EP draws on Afrobeat, Kuduro, Hip-Hop, Trap and further influences from South America and the Middle East. This passion for exploring world cultures and to base his musical projects on his experiences with them informs all his work, and through basing his musical themes on different areas of the world Kxngs seeks to manifest his dreams and become author of his own story.
Earth Sign will be the first release on Ex-Local - a new label born out of the London club night that shifts venue every party. With a core of local artists who became returning favourites that regularly had sweat pouring from the party's ceilings, the next logical step was to start a label to help bring this young, exciting & creatively adventurous new talent to wider recognition. First stop, Kxngs.

The spirit of the album was born during their first trip to Tallahassee. Florida to meet George Clinton, which resulted in a collaborative 2015 EP that also featured Sly Stone, as well as production on Funkadelic's 2015
critically acclaimed album. For their own album Soul Clap returned to Tallahassee to record at Clinton's What Studios, collaborating with fresh local talent, working day and night in P-Funk's creative space. Between there, Miami, Red Bull Studios Manhattan, Midnight Magic's studio in Greenpoint and Charlie Levine's Rad Pad in Williamsburg, this body of
music took shape. In 'Soul Clap' we can hear four years of maturing technique since their
first album, carefully crafted and supported by a whole community of musical talent. In the words of Charles Levine, one half of the duo, it digs deep into our funky souls and turns our wildest dreams into sound. If 'EFUNK' (their first album) was an attempt to create a blueprint using our past inspirations, then Soul Clap' is the beautiful skyscraper, standing tall as it looks to the future.'
This is music from an eclectic universe, where creativity and mystery are the guides. Lead single 'Shine' is an anthemic wonder featuring the legendary Nona Hendryx, founding member of the group Labelle, and collaborator with George Clinton & P-Funk, Talking Heads and Peter Gabriel to name a few. Eli Goldstein and Charles Levine have a rare and insightful take on electronic music that breaks through the limitations that often cages others and as DJs they have held residencies everywhere from Circo Loco at
DC10 Ibiza, to Output in New York. Long ago our mentor Caril Mitro from Vinyl Connection (a record store in their hometown of Boston) taught us that House wears many hats'. That means that the music that we love so much comes in many shapes and sizes,' explains Goldstein. 'We are children of the 80's and 90's so funk and hip hop were our early influences, but discovering the rave and being led into house and disco, these genres feel very organic and homegrown to us. We carry these
influences in our attitudes and beings. Music has the incredible power to shape a personality and it has molded us into the artists we have become.'
Starting out cutting their teeth in the 90's Boston rave scene, they soon found fame through a series of house edits and became household names through notable releases, including a DJ Kicks alongside close allies Wolf + Lamb and their electric first album called EFUNK. The title, which stands for Everybody's Freaky Under Nature's Kingdom, and sounds like modern electronic funk, became their calling card, and led to their collaboration with George Clinton and honorary entry into the P-Funk family. EFUNK is a bridge between the discerning futurism of underground
dance and the charisma and boldness of funk and pop culture. For Charlie funk is his foundation, for Eli it's jazz, and as their infamous Yoyoyo 90's Jam parties testified (playing only classics from the era), they have the ability to transform and lead in more than one movement. Back in the day at the Warehouse in Chicago with Frankie Knuckles or The
Paradise Garage with Larry Levan there was no one sound that dominated musically. It was all about diversity and eclecticism. This was the ethos then and it is a very large philosophy behind us individually and as Soul Clap. In fact it is diversity in sound that initially brought us together back in the 90's and it is the yin-yang nature of us today that pushes us forward into the
FUTURE!'

Dutch producer Frits Wentink continues to flourish in the follow up to his debut LP Rarely Pure Never Simple that was released on WOLF Music back in March this year.

Throughout releases on Heist and Wolf, Frits has consistently drawn for his arsenal of synths, effects and drum machines and through doing so has stitched a sound characterised by raw drums, analogue bass tones and odd, lo-fi samples.

Whilst maintaining ties with the aforementioned labels, Frits has also recently created his own platform in Bobby Donny - a space for him and his friends to experiment that has so far seen records from himself and San2.

Now - the follow up to San2's Impartial Perspective EP Frits lines up the 3rd release on Bobby Donny - Horses In Cornfield: a naturally sequenced, 4-track EP brimming with gently wobbling piano samples, tightly swung drums and thick, brazen bass lines.

The title track kicks things off with crispy claps and thrumming tape textures before wild blobs of filter synth tones and sparse piano chords come into play.

Girls in Matching Bathing Suits' then sits an unusual croon over driven, long-tailed kick drums before Man At Parade drives a tight, irresistible groove through a sweet, circling piano sample and more playful synth work.

Bouquet At Rest then sets more scuzzy drums plodding through a 2-note piano riff and free-flowing effects control that caps off another fine addition to the Bobby Donny series and another stellar 12" from Frits Wentink.

The EP open's with recent Future Society by Seven Davis Jr signing Jonna & Samwell with their debut collaboration Henry Western featuring the unstoppable Lady Blacktronika.
It's a heads down, no nonsense affair with moody chords underpinning mournful vocals that just ooze soul. Next up is the smooth, loopy disco of Last Trip to Gandahar's R136a1 which is a classic cut that even Soundstream himself would be proud of.
From here we move on to 'Without You' by Darran P, which balances silky Rhodes chords and melancholic vocals.
Bringing the EP to a close is J'Shez's killer remix of 'Holloway' by Flori. The original surfaced on City Fly 003 and this reinterpretation is a pure pumper from start to finish.
