Charles Cohen - Group Motion

Morphine records continue to unearth recordings from Philadelphia's synth pioneer, Charles Cohen. Two beautiful drone/ambient/jazz pieces on this one (recorded live in 1989), exposing the sonic genius and dexterity of Cohen alongside the astounding possibilities of that highly desirable synthesizer of his!!! TIP!
Group Motion is a Dance Theater in Philadelphia founded by Manfred Fischbeck with whom Cohen collaborated and performed. The Group Motion Performance is a live recording with the dance company made on the Buchla Music Easel and the Buchla 700 series; the latter, one of the rarest synthesizers on earth. Generator was performed and recorded at the Generator Sound Art Gallery, NYC with the same instrument setup. Apparently these are the only known recordings using the Buchla 700 synthesizer to be formally released, making the Group Motion album the only living proof of this incredible sounding machine.

Issued in three parts - this vinyl series will culminate in a full CD release to be announced later this year.

Body 11 is/was the one-man project of Tim Stickelbrucks. Inspired by the late 70s/early 80s icons such as OMD, Human League, and Cabaret Voltaire, Tim wrote and recorded 4 songs in 1987 in his apartment and self-released the "Mind" 7 inch EP in 1988. Rather obscure at the time, the 7" gained cult status later in the 90s when collectors and word of mouth fans began seeking out copies of the record.Medical Records is proud to reissue the "Mind" EP 4 songs along with unreleased recordings created at the same time. The unreleased tracks were songs that were distributed only on cassette (to friends, etc) at the time. The tracks have been transferred from cassette. The LP embodies the essence of the EBM (electronic body music) subgenre that was prevalent in the late 80s. Though retaining a DIY/demo feel, the tracks have a warm synth/beat laced mood that will surprise and delight fans of this era who are not knowledgeable of Body 11. The opener "Wasteland" definitely evokes a rougher/distorted vocal style over a sequenced Front 242 style rhythm with treated guitar highlights. The unreleased tracks seems to interface with the "Mind" EP songs seamlessly. Fans of early Nitzer Ebb, Front 242, late 80s industrial (Wax Trax, Nettwerk) and even early Skinny Puppy will find this collection essential.

D'arcangelo - Audiovisual Designs

*This is the fifth album by the D'ARCANGELO twins (Fabrizio & Marco, aka Monomorph) in a career stretching back nearly 2 decades, on a new electronic music imprint, 'Audiovisual Designs'.

*The album is a logical evolution from their acclaimed releases via Rephlex records and the brothers give a nod to this with the album artwork; a 3D rendering by Marco D'Arcangelo of the famous label logo, conjuring the imagination in manners fitting to the music. One would hope their 5th album to be their most accomplished and this quickly becomes clear upon listening.

In Italy, they are known as the Anni di Piombo, the 'Years Of Lead', a period of
unprecedented political turmoil between the late '60s and early '80s across the country.
Sparked following an attempt to merge the neo-fascist Italian Social Movement (MSI)
into the ruling Tambroni government and a subsequent coalition between the Christian
Democrats (DC) and the Socialist Party, nearly 2000 murders were attributed to political
violence during this dark period in the form of bombings, assassinations and street
warfare between rival militant factions, including the high profile murder of DC leader
Aldo Moro in 1978.
Kompakt artist Alessio Natalizia from Walls brings together 'Mutazione', a collection of
reactionary underground electronic and new wave rarities from Italy, recorded during the
tail end of this turbulent era. Based around a hotbed of activism in Tuscany and the Emilio
Romagna region, bands emerged from squats and both right and left wing militant
groups, feeding off the national paranoia and angst to create a unique sound, rooted in
punk but touching on new wave, electronic, experimental and industrial styles. Much of
the music was released on limited cassettes. Fanzines sprang up, both from political
groups and the bands themselves, in turn spawning new artists - Suicide Dada, featured
on this album, emerged from a collective running the VM fanzine in Turin and the Traxxtra
collective of underground musicians also published a regular lo-fi magazine of their own.

Light House - In Their Image

Mannequin Records is simply elated to present the debut 12'' EP from Light House. This is a 300 copies Limited edition release with artwork by Giandomenico Carpentieri.
Light House have been kicking around Portland for two years. The band contains Chris Relyea, an ex member from The Rapture, Dawn Sharp and Brooks Blackhawk from Atriarch. Excellent dark wave with spacious mixes, minimal synths, reverb drenched guitars and eerie malevolent vocals that either pierces your heart or your spinal cord (I haven't decided which as yet, but Dawn Sharp is most excellent).

Originally released in United States by Freee record label in 2012 and recorded on pure analog tape, 'In Their Image' EP illuminates the romantic and elemental nature of Light House's dreamlike sound, a moody, theatrical dirge which brings to mind classic 4AD acts such as Dead Can Dance and This Mortal Coil.

To celebrate this relaunch Light House will be touring America and Europe, hitting the West Coast in mid June to coincide with Warm Leatherette in San Francisco, then onto New York and making their way along the East Coast.

Light House is music that lulls the Etheric body awake, in a hypotetical world where Tropic Of Cancer meets Soft Metals.

The Klinik - Eat Your Heart Out

Nun erscheint mit "Eat Your Heart Out" endlich ein neuer Longplayer der bahnbrechenden belgischen Formation auf Out Of Line Music. Alles an "Eat Your Heart Out" ist 100% The Klinik ... so, als wäre die Band nie weg gewesen. Nobody does it like The Klinik!

Streetwalker is a collaboration between Chicago residents Elon Katz (White Car/Hippos in Tanks) and Beau Wanzer (Mutant Beat Dance/L.I.E.S).
They wrote their debut album 'Future Fusion' over the course of two years. Through endless experimentation and analog improvisation, they have constructed an entirely new sound showcasing vibrant hand-played synthesizer, vulnerable
vocals, and serpentine drum lines.

Streetwalker's distinct song structures are characterized as much by restraint, timing, and subtle shift as by the cyclic abandon of the loop. Having recorded the entire album over one humid weekend in the Chicago studio, Minbal, the duo's recording process mirrored this tension. Much like a rock record, each track was recorded entirely live to 1 inch tape - no overdubs, no MIDI programming - and then painstakingly mixed with digital precision during the six months that followed.

In line with this principle of handcrafted reconfiguration, the artwork for the LP was produced in collaboration with digital artist Spencer Longo (IMG Masters/The Jogging), who harvested images and textures from Wanzer's extensive collection of classic sci-fi and horror editorial to construct an anachronistically futuristic interface.

Nautic is a project born of a meeting of minds, comprising one time samplist-turned-outsider-pop-rock-songwriter and Deek in-house producer Bullion, with Laura Groves - also known for her hazy pop records under the name Blue Roses - and Tic, of Young Turks renown. Bring them together and you have a sound that sands down the rough edges of life's troubles, creating flanging sea shanties that tumble out of your speakers like autumn leaves falling from the cold trees in slow motion. A side 'Fresh Eyes' finds Laura, Tic and Bullion trading call-and-response refrains over a plodding drum machine, twinkling Balearic guitar licks and the romantic sax tones of multi-instrumentalist Slime, questioning whether their visions of love are real, yearning to meet each other in the middle. Turn it over and you'll find the moody flipside 'Fixxx', where Nautic sound rather like a spaced out, new-age answer to Fleetwood Mac. Equal parts somnambulist pop and psychedelic folk, Nautic are a humble breath of fresh air in a world that feels crowded with noise. Music to reflect to, wash up to and question the universe to. There's plenty more where this comes from, so keep half an eye and a quarter ear open for the next chapter in the Deek story.

"Full Cold Moon" ist eine Sammlung von EPs, ursprünglich 2014 erschienen, und nun auf 180g Icy Blue Glitzervinyl neu aufgelegt werden. Mehr als ein Sampler ist es ein Dokument des Übergangs in einer Zeit, in der Cold Cave ihren Sound über ein Spektrum von Isolation und Intensität ausdehnten. Von gitarrenbetonten Synthie-Hymnen über reduziertem Cold-Wave-Minimalismus bis zu dystopischen Spin-Outs fangen Tracks wie der ungewöhnliche Underground-Favorit "A Little Death To Laugh", "Oceans With No End", "God Made The World", "Black Boots" oder "Nausea, The Earth And Me" eine Zeit der Klangforschung und rastlosen Neuerfindung ein.

DRAB MAJESTY - THE DEMONSTRATION

Deb Demure's powerful presence and hypnotic sound has firmly defined the identity of Drab Majesty. After releasing the debut album, Careless, Drab Majesty split time between touring and studios, piecing together the ideas for the follow-up album, "The Demonstration", an album depicting Deb Demure as only one part of Drab Majesty's overall being and storytelling saga. With "Induction", Drab Majesty sets up an ethereal backdrop for which the rest of the album follows. Tracks such as "Dot In The Sky" and "39 By Design" (a song pointing to the doomsday Heaven's Gate cult) use lush, shoegaze approach to portray the fragility of humanity's loss of self, looking only to the heavens for answers. "Cold Souls" flawlessly executes Drab Majesty's arpeggiated finger picking signature, complete with washes of hazy noise and atmospheric reverb. With the addition of Mona D. to Drab Majesty's mysterious portfolio, songs from The Demonstration perpetually create new meanings and depth with every listen. After Drab Majesty wraps up The Demonstration with "Behind The Wall", one is left wondering what kind of identity is truly their own.disc features two bonus tracks plus four exclusive remixes by Cold Cave, Drew McDowall, Silent Servant and Martial Canterel.

FREAK HEAT WAVES - ZAP THE PLANET

More than a decade ago, Freak Heat Waves emerged from Canada's stark Midwestern prairies, establishing their voice through early cassette-based experiments and DIY performances. Over the years, the group's live incarnations evolved as they endured a rigorous and nearly non-stop touring schedule. When not on the road, the Freaks became hermits, engaging in countless writing/production sessions that grew increasingly complex, eventually forcing them to travel beyond guitar, bass and drums.
Their home studios continuously relocated, advanced and diversified. New instruments started to appear and new trajectories were explored. The studio process became more dynamic, involving many overdubs, avant-garde recording techniques, experimental sound design and orchestrations that utilized legendary effects, drum machines and synths. Tireless curiosity fueled the duo as they merged their original sound with new discoveries and seemingly disparate influences. With their latest work, Zap The Planet, the Freaks find themselves splitting coasts in Montreal and Victoria, distanced by geography and time, connecting via serial transmission tethered to a lone ethernet terminal. Extenuating logistics can unexpectedly prompt innovation.
No Freak Heat Waves record has followed a singular path and no two are alike. Each album is an evolution in musical direction, songwriting and conceptualization. With Zap the Planet, (their second album on Telephone Explosion,) the duo have manifested more of their intrinsically unique vision and become more pronounced in their unhinged artistic process. The follow up to 2017’s Beyond XXXL finds the Freaks taking a fearless, inventive leap to create the greatest departure from their previous work. There are no fads here, no accidents either. Freak Heat Waves give us a record full of lo-fi digital grit and early MIDI instrumentation. Dirty samples crackle as they skate over immense analog synths. Psychotropic rhythms plant roots and the timeless, signature Freak Heat Waves vocals serve as guides throughout the journey. Through it all the Freaks find themselves zapped!

After spreading several music videos and EPs all year long, Jumo starts the decade with a first much anticipated album. More than a compilation of his past works, “Et le vent?” extends the artist’s experiments and add new colors to his palette.
Featuring Léonie Pernet, Pénélope Antena, Hyacinthe.
Staying on the line traced by the previous tracks, “Et le vent?” perpetuates Jumo’s taste for narration with all its forms.
Six years ago Clément Leveau gave birth to Jumo a musical avatar with whom he asserted a singular identity characterized by a sophisticated production of heady melodies and a cinematographic atmosphere allowing him to give free rein to his passion for the image. The release of the Radio Nova hit 'Aléa' marked the beginning of a fruitful collaboration with the Parisian label Nowadays Records (Fakear, La Fine Equipe, Clément Bazin, Leska). As a graphic designer Clément makes Jumo a true transdisciplinary project in which sound and video feed off each other, putting his collective Cela at the service of a dark and arty visual universe that perfectly matches the contours of his music.
After spreading several music videos and EPs all year long, Jumo starts the decade with a first much anticipated album. More than a compilation of his past works, “Et le vent?” extends the artist’s experiments and add new colors to his palette.
Staying on the line traced by the previous tracks, “Et le vent?” perpetuates Jumo’s taste for narration with all its forms. “L’exode”, first single of the album, is a perfect example. It gives the album’s tone and also dives us into Jumo’s powerful aesthetic thanks to the music video.
“Steve (Ft. Léonie Pernet), is a tribute to Steve Maia Caniçot, young man who dramatically died during a police charge on Nantes docks on June 21st, 2019. A track on which Jumo confronts with Léonie Pernet’s grunge intonations, an unexpected collaboration sounding like an evidence.
Another main track of the album is “Une Belle Personne (Ft. Oré)” where the producer’s synths converse with the French singer and offer us an original and efficient pop song.
The great Awir Leon, the French rapper Hyacinthe, Hier Soir (Jumo’s side project) and Penelope Antena complete the cast of an album that goes from the calm contemplation of the world to the underground clubs filled with energy.

Nikolaus Utermöhlen - Karlsbad

A reissue of Nikolaus Utermöhlen’s »Karlsbad« album, originally released in 1989. Utermöhlen was a founding member of Die Tödliche Doris and this is his sole solo release. A collection of 23 witty oddball compositions for clarinet, accordion, percussion, recorder, violin, guitar, organ. It definitely has a Doris dose but even more so it shines for its totally singular mélange of tribal dada chamber folk, dilettante dissonant poetry, hard to compare with anything else. A slice of flamboyant wellness.

The recordings of this album were made for the "Georgette Meunier" film by Tania Stöcklin and Cyrille Rey-Coquais. Issued from the original master tapes and includes the 8 page booklet with engravings from the Karlsbad spa era.

Distruct

NATURA SONORIS
03.03.2023

“On this, their second LP, P16.D4 solicited tapes from several artists from Europe, England, the U.S., Canada, and Japan, and mixed that with their own material. Though in the current digital age collaborations from artists thousands of miles apart is quite normal, this was a quite radical approach back in 1982, when work on this LP began – an interesting concept that actually works quite well, since these artists, which include Bladder Flask, DDAA, the Haters, Merzbow, Nocturnal Emissions, Nurse With Wound, and several others – work in a similar free-ranging experimentalism as P16.D4, and their particular elements, usually just vocals or one instrument or noise implement, blend well without diluting P16.D4’s own peculiar brand of avant-garde post-industrialism, but merely give it another facet. One of the best tracks, “Aufmarsch, Heimlich,” consists of a choir submitted anonymously from Eastern Europe phasing in and out of static while a skronky alto sax bleats away. Most of the pieces exist somewhere just beyond the borders of free jazz, industrial, and even classical avant-garde, full of jarring noises and strange transitions and with a heavy overlay of electronics. What started out as an experiment yielded one of P16.D4’s best albums.” - Rolf Semprebon / AMG

“Distruct is organized around sounds provided by the cream of experimental musicians of the early ’80s, from Nurse With Wound to Nocturnal Emissions, via De Fabriek, Die Todliche Doris, The Haters, Merzbow, and others. Obviously, there is no question of remixing here, and at no time do P16.D4 seek to hide its sources, clearly identifying the contribution of each artist in the liner notes. It would be futile to try to find the paw of each artist, the trio operating vis-à-vis its collaborators the same methods as in their own work. Reworked, distorted by various effects, cut, edited, aggregated with other sounds, produced by P16.D4 themselves, reprocessed. Exchange, communication, two other data that will constantly recur in the work of P16.D4, rich in external contributions and encounters of all kinds. Musically, and despite the diversity of sources treated, Distruct escapes the heterogeneous character, which often marks this type of collaboration, to offer a coherent whole: fragments of opera, Soviet speeches, out-of-tune guitar, saxophone, tattered violins, overdriven and metallic noisy attacks, jackhammers, field recordings, battered choirs, and many other less identifiable sounds. In addition to the desired dialogue between the artists, Distruct also offers a real reflection on listening, and on the expectations of the listener.” - Dissolve

P16.D4 was a German electronic noise music collective, active primarily from 1980 to 1988. P16.D4 embraced tape cut-ups, musique concrète, endless recycling and transformation of previously published material, and many long-distance collaborations with like-minded artists such as DDAA, Vortex Campaign, Nurse With Wound, and Merzbow. Their active participation in the international industrial tape scene yielded collaborative output such as their release Distruct, where bands such as Nurse with Wound, Nocturnal Emissions, Die Tödliche Doris, and The Haters provided the source material. The longest-term collaboration was with the installation and conceptual artist Achim Wollscheid, who used P16.D4 sounds as the basis for LPs he recorded under the name SBOTHI. Ralf Wehowsky, the only constant member of the group, later released solo material under the alias RLW.

Members of P16.D4 were also involved with Selektion, a collective of people involved with sound as well as the visual arts. Selektion published LPs, CDs, books, visual art and design.

The collective worked in a strongly improvised, spontaneous and anti-professional way, using acoustic and electronic instruments, using existing sound fragments, duplicating and alienating them, using repetition, distortion, changes in speed and playing direction. For this they used not only sounds of other artists but also their own material from earlier productions. Late works of the collective are associated with musique concrete.

P16.D4 - Kühe in 1/2 Trauer

“This music is staggeringly original and innovative, and while it’s possible to locate it in a chain of circumstance that links it to ‘Industrial’ music, P16.D4 indulged in none of the empty cliches associated with the genre, worked incredibly hard, and seem to have been aiming at a form of sound art that was much more profound, varied, subversive, and potentially dangerous. Kuhe In 1/2 Trauer’s accompanying credits indicate their radical approach to making music: lots of improvisation, lots of live electronics, extensive use of tape-loops, some conventional instrumentation, and much that isn’t – like the milk churn on ‘Paris, Morgue’ or the use of baking tray and washing machine elsewhere. Even when guitars, drums or keyboards are used, they’re played very weirdly. It’s not even made clear who was doing what; the main credit is ‘Concept,’ which I assume means that one of the three devised the framework in which the noise would operate itself, and while RLW gets the lion’s share of these credits, a lot of the cuts are evenly divided among the team and I have no doubt that the group operated in a very democratic or libertarian manner. None of this prepares you for the insane and troubling sounds that reach your ears, composed with scant regard for conventional logic and following an exciting, absurdist path, especially in the matter of tape edits and juxtapositions of recordings.” - Ed Pinsent, The Sound Projector.

“Though this German group started out as a the new wave band P.D., by the time of Kuhe in 1/2 Trauer, their first LP under the P16.D4 name from 1984, they had developed far beyond into extremely experimental music similar to other post-industrial artists working with abstract avant-garde soundscapes. There’s a bleak industrial feel to the gritty, lo-fi electronics and tape loops, while the group throws in enough curve balls to keep it interesting. On some pieces, strange, looped choirs bubble out of throbbing pulses and drones of feedback, while others have clanging and clattering, and elements of musique concrète and improvisation blur the boundaries even further. The opening track, “Default Value,” is one of those disorienting pieces with noises flying everywhere, while “Paris Morgue” takes excerpts from one of their old P.D. tracks and messes it up with additional instruments, while the ungainly titled fourth track throws in a heavy texture of percussive noises to create an edgy ambience about to teeter off the edge, and the even darker and more ambient title track takes the tension even further. Arrhythmic and amorphous and capable at moments of becoming quite noisy and abrasive, while at others far more somber and quiet, Kuhe in 1/2 Trauer is quite a fascinating release.” - Rolf Semprebon / AMG

Lake District producer Sierre is releasing his new EP ‘Artisan Jams’ on 14 August via Practise Music. The EP is inspired by his time as a factory worker, a job from which he was made redundant just before the Covid-19 crisis. With a mixture of fear and relief, he quickly used his free time to channel his energy into some demos that he had been working on. The rhythm section represents the monotony of his work, there are no “drops” or any real let ups, whilst the music that surrounds this is all designed to make the most out of very little, eschewing complex chord structures and melodies for a more subtle growth. ‘Artisan Jams’ opens with ‘The River’, a House track that skirts convention, ‘Captain French’ is Sierre’s take on Ghetto House, but with its edges smoothed, whilst ‘Wavefunc’ is a disco-inflected dance track. The 12” Vinyl also comes with an exclusive track, ‘Perseid’, a more experimental turn, full of white noise, ambient foley and sparse piano. Born and raised in Kendal, Cumbria, Sierre has quietly spent his free time working on his production skills, initially inspired by heavier club music, he has developed his own take on electronic music, partly inspired by the foothills of Lakeland it has taken a more playful, exploratory route. After leaving his studies in Mathematics in London a couple of years ago, Sierre returned to the Lake District to work out his next steps. During this period of reflection, alongside taking his music more seriously and working in a factory, he began to develop a keen interest in two seemingly disparate pursuits: chess and rock climbing. When looked at in more detail, the similarities between all of these disciplines reveal themselves - in rock climbing, even the smallest twist of a finger can be the difference between success and failure, whilst a single incorrect chess move can unravel a whole strategy.

Music from Skalpel's iconic debut for Ninja Tune, reinterpreted by top Polish producers!

Poland's ambassadors of jazz-inspired electronics invited outstanding local producers of downtempo, dance music, hip-hop, and jazz to remix this album. The result is "Recut," the best remix album in the history of Polish phonography. A record every bit as worthy as the historic original. It’s an extraordinary tale of the past and present of Polish electronic music.

This year marks the 20th anniversary of the release of Skalpel’s debut album, which was released by the famous British label Ninja Tune in 2004. The Polish duo, Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudło, gained international acclaim by venturing into the then lesser-known territory of Eastern European jazz, updating it with electronic tools.
Pitchfork praised the album enthusiastically: „On these tracks, Skalpel smudge the line between organic and electronic effortlessly, like a landscape artist working with charcoal, creating deep nuances of light and shadow that give the work its overall depth. (…)Its rhythmic dexterity and melodic sweep are hard to deny” -
The prestigious The Wire added: "Jazz, breaks, scat shuffles and funky riffs? of the highest standard. This release deserves to see them revered far beyond Poland"

Today, looking back over two decades, this album can be confidently considered a milestone in Polish electronica and a timeless classic of downtempo, nu-jazz, and trip-hop. Thanks to this record, the band also gained worldwide recognition, and their subsequent consistently high-quality albums like "Highlight" and "Origins" continue to attract significant interest.
Skalpel’s debut with Ninja Tune undoubtedly changed the face of Polish music, redefined the perception of the Polish jazz canon, and paved the way for younger creators. "Many of them, on 'Recut,' pay tribute to the enduring legacy of Marcin Cichy and Igor Pudło.
Artists like Magiera, Emade, 1988, Kixnare, Steez, Latarnik, Envee, Pejzaż, Etnobotanika, and others are now recognized names and respected figures in the Polish music scene. Though each of the artists invited by the Wrocław duo has developed their own original style, they find common roots in the duo’s music, on the border between jazz groove, hip-hop ease, downtempo moodiness, or ambient.
The excellent interpretations showcase the incredible potential revealed by Skalpel’s debut material, which continues to inspire new discoveries. This is a record that does not age, still captivates, and continues to inspire and provoke new interpretations.

Let’s RECUT this!!

New Cold Dream is a thoughtful yet heartfelt amalgamation of dark electro, synth pop, and industrial dance music. "Lie Awake," an irresistibly classic dark-electro song underpinned by an infectious dance beat, embodies this balance perfectly. Past influences abound - from John Maus to Bauhaus, from Suicide to Depeche Mode - but this record lives distinctly in the present.
