VOGUE was formed by American musician and multi-instrumentalist Aret Madilian, back then equipping himself with Moog and Roland synthesisers, plus a Boss DR-55 and a piano, and recording two of those ultimate dark minimal synth hits, "Sahara" and "Shattered Peace", think of Das Kabinette, Those Attractive Magnets, Inertia, Ceramic Hello, just to name a few. Aret added Julie Kubat (vocals and lyrics) and Teresa Kubat (vocals) to the line-up and self-released both tracks on their sole release, the "Sahara" 12" in 1983 (Aret Records, Ar 42266).

Synth Wave Duo MängelExemplar from Düsseldorf creates analogue and melodic New Wave Sound in an early 80's style.

For those not in the know Mater Suspria Vision are one of last remaining first wave of Witch House, proceed without prejudice, MSV were a truly bizarre one of a kind group. Combining Cosmic style with early Krautrock experimentation, bootleg VHS and a wild sense of humour, MSV have been one of our favourite groups for a long time. We've taken their last LP Antropophagus and run it through the Giallo Disco filter, featuring remixes by Xander Harris, Parasols AKA Ali Renault, Antoni Maiovvi and Vercetti Technicolor. Die Verboten are a Space Rock band formed by David and Stephen Dewaele of Soulwax, Fergus Fergadelic' Purcell and Henry Riton. This is the first album from Die Verboten, written and recorded in 2007, rediscovered and mixed in 2015. This LP consists of five tracks, Dafalganger', White Island', E40', Nacht Winkel' and Aquarius'. It is the sound of classic German kosmiche, live drums, synths, percussion and a loose funk you only find in these kind of stretched fluid grooves. The album was produced by Die Verboten and recorded and mixed at Deewee. Artwork is by Ill Studio / Fergadelic. Die Verboten's debut EP Live In Eivissa' was released in 2009 via London's Vinyl Factory (now selling for over £100 on Discogs) and was recorded poolside in Ibiza.

So we really happy to unearth for you 3 more recordings from their discography, all recorded live in 1985. Mauro Massaglia, founder member and lead synthesizer, describes the band's aesthetic as 'simple music, no solos, new sounds, all played at maximum volume possible.' Something that surely catch the attention of best DJs on earth, starting from TRAXX, the Chicago-based head of Nation Records, who redesign for Mannequin Records a raw live version of 'Tag Fur Tag' with what he described as a "hugly-tape Kode".


Massaglia recalls Musumeci's live shows as multimedia performances of a confrontational stripe, mixing rough sound collage with provocative visuals. 'Our intention was to involve the viewer with two senses: ear and eye,' he remembers. 'We loved stupid old black-and-white movies or war images, Berlin in the May of '45, the Vietnam conflict, corrupt Italians involved into massacres or scandals... in short, all the shit that the human race can produce.'

Local Suicide are a Berlin love story. Having met across a set of turntables, DJs, producers and dancefloor all-rounders Brax Moody and Vamparela have connected as a German and Greek soundclash since 2007, and 'We Can Go Everywhere' rubberstamps their partnership on what is their debut EP.

The onetime members of the short-lived 'Local Suzie' band project have gone on to dominate Berlin's live spots, a grounding that has since seen them filling their passports from New York to Tunesia, Tel Aviv, Istanbul and Barcelona as well becoming event organisers and attractions both home and abroad wherever there's a set of decks. Multi-taskers coming with divergent interests in hip-hop, electroclash and most things in between, and with an intimate knowledge of their respective regional movements AND the pair also running a respected music blog, Local Suicide are not usually found without their hands to the pump.

'We Can Go Everywhere', chanting into a Balearic underworld , is in the classic mode of synth-pop, disco-house and indie dance brought back from the future and into a past discotheque philosophy. Just when you think it's about to bust out a set of 80s sized shoulder pads, and those synth injections scream out from a bygone era of bigger being better (admittedly the same can be said for the drop-down bass), the pair roll out the beats with a caution turning the vibe into something best served come witching hour. Sprinkling the glitz and glamour with grit and candour and a touch of Gallic groove sensibility, paves the way for three remixes to follow suit. The future-retro scale is further determined when you have the expertise of In Flagranti to truly quantize the boogie, looping the chorus just behind a mix of digital distress signals and road trip guitars until it becomes something near an incantation of Bananarama. Alex Gloor and Sasha Crnobrnja complete two halves of basement seriousness and a hop down a yellow brick road, giving off sharp catwalk glances before breaking out the worm in the name of Factory funk.

Inigo Vontier trains tracky, fractal-examining synths for a deep tech-disco hustle. Powered by low slung electrohouse blips that cram and gang up on the dancefloor so that it needs water cannon fire to disperse it, the Mexican simultaneously makes the original sound intensely alone and on the run, the vocal daring not speak its name until it rushes from the ground on the breakdown with a sense of release. The flashes of those kitsch-tipped synths again keep reminding you of the package's Euro destination.

Tom Tom Disco's Richard Rossa is another bringing sounds back and forward, putting spit and shine on mainframe sequences so a vintage glitterball can spin once more. With the ubiquitous synth shunts and bongo percussion not losing sight of the fact that there's a still pop-ish party going on, the Scandinavian revels in the dust and debris that his machinery comes coloured in, coming up with a snippy slice of incessant analogue disco ensuring Local Suicide's original revels in its retro roots to the last.

The sophomore EP 'Occupations' from San Francisco based synth trio INHALT. Consisting of European and East Coast natives - Matia Simovich, Bryan Gibbs, and Philip Winiger - INHALT's core operative strategy is of sonic fidelity and integrity rather than nostalgia.
Living through the rise of a surveillance society, neo-liberal agendas, and the permeation of the ephemeral into popular culture, INHALT return with a focused commentary in the form of the 'Occupations' EP. The record was produced over a year and a half, and mixed in both Austria and California, employing the best of modern and vintage techniques and technology. The sound is INHALT's interpretation of the border between the voice driven song form and the expansive, extended 12" arrangement. It is informed equally by the soundtracks of John Carpenter, as much as the vastness and sheen of Trevor Horn.
All tracks were written, produced and mixed by the band at The Bunker Studio in San Francisco. Additionally the tracks on SIde B were mixed with the help of Werner Freistätter in Türnitz, Austria. The tracks were then mastered by Paul Lavigne in London, England at Walls of Sound Mastering. The final EQ curve for vinyl by was done by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each LP is housed in a specially designed jacket by Leo Merz and includes an insert with lyrics.

The endurance club was launched in London on Friday 13th november 2009 and ran as a regular party for the next three years. The aim was to treat Electronic Body Music as an important genre in it's own right rather than just a sub genre of industrial music, whilst linking it to early House and Techno, Belgian New Beat and Synthesizer Dance Music in General.

Body Party is a tribute to all those that were part of the endureance club and to the artists that made the records we danced to.

Pinkman boss Marsman lines up the next 12' on his Charlois imprint and in doing so welcomes back good friend and label inaugurator Dollkraut.

Having steadily released a collection of extolled records, the idiosyncratic Dutchman remains in search of ancient mysteries and follows up The Gym LP 'Schimanski's Black Lullabies' for with another varied cut - this one brimming with grubby percussion, vocoder tones and faint yet compelling homages to the traditional music of Mexico and Spain.

'Mastermaster' kicks things off and drives a shifting sequence through a lo-fi break, plodding piano notes and a clipped, lively vocal hook before 'Bruce Wayne' melds spring reverb and squelching flangers to treat guitar riffs and more 80's drums. Eerily wobbling synths shimmer over head before 'Hornet Green' drives a sprung kick under tense, soundtrack synth tones and a sandy shuffle as a cinematic pursuit is rendered.

'Valium' then sets sultry vocals floating through more hazy drum breaks and softly shifting chords. Rhythmic variation and more vintage effects wade in and round off off a refreshing package of rich and intriguing gems and another fine addition to the Charlois series.

Limited to 300 copies only! Some beautiful 1980s Art Pop reaches my desk with this album by Yugoslavian band KATARINA II. First released in 1984 this record fits well with the epic atmospheres Mike Oldfield once created on his quite successful mainstream masterpieces 'Crisis' and 'Discovery' around the same time period. The sound of this album comes as big as it was possible back then and it has a very clean and slick but still vivid approach in a tune like 'Geto' but 'Katarina II' can also get rough and demented when it comes to the more eruptive independent -, punk - and hardrock moments it offers to the listener. You may compare it to early U2 and BAUHAUS as well as to other Eastern bloc rock bands like OLYMPIC from Czechoslovakia but in a very unique fashion. They seem to have devoured every musical influence from Western shores they could get hold of. The depth of their musical background is amazing. 'Katarina II' is quite an accessible album but with sharp edges and spiky corners. The new wave and new romantic aspects are still obvious but the post punk weirdness overshadows the sunny pop appeal of many tunes. If all the Western releases from the 80s were that good. KATARINA II is a strange band among average pop rock acts and still captures your soul with beautiful rock tunes that stay with you forever if you listened to them just once. So this is the progressive way to behold the new wave rock of the 1980s and I must admit that I can drown my mind in these colorful tunes. Lovers of strange but easy to access music, be welcome to get onto the trip of your life.

Sometimes it happens and no one can tell you why.  A great—nay—an excellent band comes around and releases some stellar music, only to be forgotten in the overly-huge Bible of Rock History.  (Pop Matters 2007)

Following the highly acclaimed recent release on CTR 'Perfect Motion'-Jon Savage's Secret History of Second-Wave Psychedelia 1988-93 (A Lauren Laverne BBC 6Music Compilation Album of the Week) comes a limited vinyl version of another previously very well received compilation on CTR. However, this album is cut from a different musical cloth, rooted firmly in the Manchester Post-Punk scene.

The Tokyo Times wrote of the original CD release in 2007:

'Manicured Noise possessed the kind of arty, angular sound (and asymmetrical haircuts) that so many bands of the current moment strive for. '

Manicured Noise were Manchester's prime Art/Post-Punk-Funk act. They're woven deeply into the legendary Factory/Russell Club scene of the late seventies. Their friends and peers included the celebrated artist Linder Mulvey and the godhead Joy Division (with whom they shared a rehearsal space)

This restructured &, restyled release features all-new artwork from Sardinian, Cagliari based, collagist and artist Andrea Floris. The album gathers together, the first time on vinyl for most of the tracks, almost all of their recordings including their two singles for Pre/Charisma Records, a BBC session and other archive material.

This enigmatic act formed in Manchester in 1978, the very early days of the band remain a mystery. Given their name by the aforemementioned prime Manc scenester and friend of Morrissey, Linder, the group peddled a form of spiky and angular Jazz Punk. Jeff Noon, acclaimed sci-fi writer (Vurt) was an early member of the group, adding to the particular retro-futurist edge they displayed, forged in the early 80's musical melting pot that was the Hulme estate.

Inspired by New York, Television, Ornette Coleman, Talking Heads, August Darnells' Machine, French Soundtracks and Disco Chic-along with a nod to Northern Soul and Moroder, the band cut a singular groove. Early hours inspiration from 70's cop and Kung-Fu soundtracks were incorporated, a good 10 years or more before Massive Attack and Portishead did the same. In doing so, Manicured Noise created a sound that's still difficult to pin down.

Guitarist and later MN frontman Steven Walsh was an ex member of the Flowers of Romance, a legendary pre-Pistols vehicle for a certain Sid Vicious, and also various members of the Slits and Banshees.
A stringer for the NME and post-punk zine Zig-Zag, Steven bought an experimental and funky ethos to the band.

Faith, one of two highly acclaimed 1980 Pre singles boasts a tough Northern backbeat acknowledging the Manchester debt. A BBC session followed.

Julian Cope,the Arch Drood himself, suggested recently that Manicured Noise were fit for a residency at the fictitious Opposite Club which features in his latest novel 'One Three One '. They'd be playing 'Faith' no doubt, alongside Uri Gallagher and Spackhouse Tutti.

Almost written out of the Manchester story, this compilation will hopefully redress the balance, telling the tale of a band that were on the fringes of the Factory Records elite, (they generally shunned the Manchester scene inhabiting their own niche) but always creating their own script for the future.

MW announce an exquisite double LP release by obscure Japanese artist Tomo Akikawabaya. As long time admirers of Akikawabaya's 1980s releases on his own label Castle Records, MW had attempted to reach him for many years without any luck. Finally at some point in 2014, a conversation was struck and one thing lead to the next. It turned out that the admiration was mutual, which was surprising as it seemed Akikawabaya had disappeared completely. After working through the track selection and artwork ideas, the release plan came up. The result is the double LP entitled The Invitation of The Dead. The collection of songs include the entirety of both The Castle (1984) and Anju (1985) releases, all newly remastered.

After last year's well-received comprehensive double album 'Real Life', 23rd Underpass are restlessly recording new material without sacrificing on quality. The new album 'Faces' contains Italo disco smash hits 'Tonight' and 'I Will Make You Believe', as well as more darker minimal synth/wave hits 'Faces' and 'Neo Self' and epic synth pop on 'Faces', lovingly housed between the 'Intro' and 'Outro' as used in live and DJ sets. A must-have for aficionados of the aforementioned musical genres, and not the last we have heard from 23rd Underpass!

'Flying While Standing' marks the first outing on Holger tracks, a Brussels based label that sprung out of a refreshing party breed which has seen the city's bustling underground mesmerized for the last couple of years. It's only a natural evolution for the two notorious record lovers behind the label, to start releasing on their own imprint. With this first outing they aim at giving a peek at Belgian synth pop still being alive, not only in the many retro compilations or obscurity reissues, but here and now.


Enter Bright Entity. Consisting of Michiel Claus and Ciska Thomas, both classically trained musicians and active in different other projects, the duo share a history leading them to team up on this project, starting out in 2009. While Michiel is looking to fulfill his musical needs in the electronic realms, Ciska, as a vocalist, does so in more acoustic settings. This mini album turned out to be the culmination of their shared love for synth pop, combining influences as wide as Arthur Russel, the dubpop sound of Peaking Lights and Pas de Deux, of which family ties convey a more profound kinship. Last year Ciska even joined the ranks of the cult formation when they performed a one off reunion concert at Brussels' Ancienne Belgique.


Throughout this six tracker you'll hear these influences shine trough in their idiosyncratic blend of sun induced, lo-fi casio pop, much in the vein of French duo Deux, Anne Clark or even Les Disques Du Crépuscule's Antena. Rich in colors and dynamics, with an ever pleasant friction between the rougher drumcomputer sounds and the fluid, soothing synths. Ciska's husky voice and cloudy melodies conjure up nicely with the housey drumsounds and deranged details that fill up the mix after a couple of listens. In fact it's not as straightforward as you might think at first listen. By stroking the right chords and laying down sanguine lyrics, Ciska manages to pull you in fairly easily. It's only through repeated listening that you may find the compelling part Michiel is playing, apart from taking care of the rhythm section.


At times pacing, yet soothing and even a little narcotized, this is music for cruising, home listening and dancing, for making out and romancing.

UABOS, aka Matteo Pepe, is a young and rising start from the fashion capital of Europe. This Milan musician melts the Mediterranean with 707 attitude, connecting his homeland with the iconic floor grooves of Chicago. Warbling acid warmth gives way to spiralling female samples as ''Dusk'' sets in. The track is pure golden sunshine. Tweaked bars are woven through clean drums to form an energy-filled track of explosive properties. Polished rhythm patterns scaffold the EP. From this solid base flow clever melodies and dancefloor subtlety. 303s trickle against thick and rich chords for the textured tones of ''ABC Dream''. UABOS grabs his audience, holding them with hypnotic harmonies and an entrancing elegance. But with that is an intoxicating funk, one epitomized in ''The Drill''. Toms and pads introduce. Snares snap as a deep and dense build is constructed, layers bubbling arpeggios support cascading chords for a Chitown streaked disco romp. The finale, ''Squash'', is living musical liquid. A syrup of synthesized squawk squirms under soaring notes and crisp beats for a jackin' infusion.

Neon is not a common name for italian post punk lovers. Born in Florence, the cradle of peninsula's wave, they were probably the first important post punk gothic band in our country and they are still nowadays one of the most active band in 80's Italian new wave time, still marking Italian rock history. The band, which was born first as a duo at the end of the 70's in Florence's undeground culture, soon stands out for its KRAFTWERK and new wave icons' synth, which made their style a unique 80's cultural dream's specimen, together with newromantic and post punk tought of bands like JOY DIVISION, ULTRAVOX and HUMAN LEAGUE. Back in 2011, Chicago's Beau Wanzer reshaped the angry body-music of the now-defunct Houston duo //TENSE// with an 8 minute claustrophobic TR-909 workout. The Rattler Proxy, a sonic duo from Athens, Greece, release their debut single featuring two original songs - "McReady's Blues" and "Mr. Sham" - along with a remix of the latter by Timothy J. Fairplay, one half of the Asphodells.

Drawing influences from the likes of Suicide and the dark and synth-heavy soundtrack work of John Carpenter, The Rattler Proxy explore the realm of urban alienation through intense and claustrophobic soundscapes. Often swapping their pulsating electronic crawl, for digital rockabilly-esque freak-outs, theirs is a world of back alleys and gang laden imagery, a rhythmic decent into a hellish, concrete landscape.

The title track is an epic noise tribute to John Carpenter's classic sci-fi thriller "The Thing". The b-side features synth stomper "Mr. Sham" while Timothy J. Fairplay transforms it into a zombie trance classic.

He has led iconoclastic bands Couch and Lake Of Dracula and has operated under his solo electronic pseudonym, MAGAS, since the late '90s. He recently contributed to the score of Italian director Asia Argento's lncompresa (Misunderstood), which premiered at The Festival de Cannes in 2014.

Cold Showers, a band formed in Highland Park, California in 2010, fuse the brash power of their shoegaze pedigree with the smokey compulsions of post-punk and no-wave ancestors, they'd fit in well amongst their idols on the Factory or early Rough Trade back catalog, but blend in perfectly amongst the unique foliage found on the Dais Records roster.

After releasing singles on Mexican Summer and Art Fag, Cold Showers signed with Dais Records and by the late summer of 2012, Dais had released the band's debut album, Love and Regret, to a storm of industry praise and critical acclaim. After successful tours with bands such as The Soft Moon & Veronica Falls the members decided to take some time off to start crafting new songs in a more pop-oriented direction. These songs started to take form in a handful of singles and live cassette releases on Dais, until the band decided to hunker down in the studio to formalize and cement the tracks found on their new album.

'Matter Of Choice', their sophomore album, see's the band step up to the plate, with more pop sensibility under their belt, and it's this pervasive pop mode against which Cold Showers cast themselves, without ever fully relinquishing themselves from their signature piston-precision rhythms, and anthem laden synthesizer illuminations that came about within the band's formation.

As earlier compilations of 'Danza Meccanica' have taught us, Italy gave birth to a disproportionate number of synth-pop, new wave and electronic acts in the 80s. Mannequin goes deeper into the Italian new wave archelogical research with a killer 10 tracks selection of Carmody. Picking their name from a science fiction novel titled "Dimension of Miracles" by Robert Sheckley, Carmody were coming from Torino, as their pairs Monuments and Chromagain. Started as a duo (Alberto Ramella and Andrea Lesmo) and later a trio with Max Casacci joining in as a guitar player, Carmody recorded from 1981 to 1985 and issued three incredibly rare demo tapes. "Sleep On Mirrors" compiles the best tracks from those tapes, bringing you one of the most peculiar 80's minimal synth music coming out of Italy.

Clay Pedrini is a musician and singer from Milan. He released his only single, 'New Dream', in 1984 on Sensation Records. Despite his limited output, Pedrini proved himself to be a shining star of the Italo scene. Unfortunately, his career was cut short by a severe case of whiplash, but his fusion of analog keyboards and electronic trickery has stood the test of time

"We're big fans of French synthpop like Jacno, Deux, Ruth and Serge Blenner. This kind of playful synthetic sound mixed with weird and sometimes depressing poetry had a big influence on us as kids and as musicians," reveal the French duo DAT POLITICS. Since 1999, Claude Pailliot and Gaetan Collet have been working on music shaped by those influences, without referring to them directly. Drone, noise and musique concrète are points of reference that clearly come through in their electronic songs to this day and are also closely related to pop music.

Van Kaye + Ignit is the Dutch duo of Ed Van Kasteren (Van Kaye) and Ignatine Bekken (Ignit), who joined forces in the city of Arnhem during early 1980. While at university, Van Kaye was the singer of The MoNoMeN, a local new wave band. By the end of 1979 he had become more interested in the use of electronics and rhythmic industrial patterns. In April 1980 he released a demo cassette with 30 minutes of his own work titled 'A Slight Delay''. While experimenting with synthesizers and developing extreme sounds, he met Ignit, who had previously worked in the fields of art and performance. Together they recorded their first 4 songs with guest musician Williem Wisselink (Wizzkopf) in the summer of 1981, and released the ''Picassos on the Wall 7' later that year on their own Ding Dong label. Van Kaye + Ignit then began work on their debut 60 minute cassette album, A Slight Delay. Like the 7', all songs were recorded and mixed by Van Kaye at his home studio on a TEAC A-3440 four-track recorder. Self-released in 1981, the album pairs conceptual sophistication with disarming naïveté in a way that has been difficult to replicate since the formative years of 'bedroom' electronic music. Both members handle vocals (or non-vocals), and songs feature everything from new wave riffs to slowly shifting oscillator buzzes and eerie electronics over mechanical rhythms. This reissue includes the entire 11-track original c-60 cassette A Slight Delay, as well as all 4 tracks from the ''Picassos on the Wall 7' spread across two vinyl discs. For the first time ever, the original 1/4' master tapes have been transferred and remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The jacket is a replica based on the original A Slight Delay cassette artwork, which was designed by the Van Kaye, with a hand-colored textured photograph resized and laid out by Eloise Leigh. Each album includes an 8x14 double sided insert with photos, lyrics, liner notes by the band, and a fold-out poster.

Doric is the alternate persona of the multitalented Stathis Leontiadis, mostly known as the one half of the Greek purists, Human Puppets. He is, without a doubt, one of the first Greek independant musicians in '00s, that treasured new wave synth music, using only hardware. Exactly as his ancestors. Being involved in various avant garde/new wave music projects since 1996, intrigued by the all analogue mentality of the late '70s - early '80s music field, he passionatelly commited to vintage synths and machines, creating a very distinctive and specific style and considered by many as specialist'. His releases on Fabrika Records (a self-titled 7', followed by Over Mentality'LP, 2013) gained excellent reviews and described as minimal electro perfectionism. This time, on this mini LP, Doric builts on his analogue rhythm box (the famous KR-55) a short story about alienation in six parts. All related and connected, these six songs describe a day of a daydreamer, forced to cope with routine and the vile, impersonal stage of socializing. This new age of impersonalization' connecting with others but never quite communicating our wishes and wills, sums up to the title 'So Far, So Near', a vast misinterprantion of other people's motives, as we are trapped inside our own havens, ourselves. This small personal nightmare, is synthesised with multilayered agility, using a MOOG ROGUE, a SEQUENTIAL CIRCUITS PRO ONE and the MACBETH MICROMAC-D. All this obsessive use of analogue equipment has only one purpose: delivering an accurate, minimal but not simple description of Life as a concrete, empty, business transaction, full of unique circuits and paths, noone sees. Overall, this mini LP refers to temper/personality, as an inevitable hideaway of oneself, but yet impossible to maintain, as long as we are bound to norms that regulate superficial relationships. We are far but yet, so near.

With his solo project he aims to examine his personal view on music, Maybelline moved from the pop touch of well-known and respected main band of his to cruise the slums of darker and even more extreme electronics.

Electronic Emergencies is proud to introduce Ceci N'est Pas, a synth wave project from New York consisting of Nico Nightingale, Pierre Klein and Jorge Socarras. Nico Nightingale is the man behind Neud Photo and earlier worked with Pierre Klein as Neud. Jorge Socarras was singer with synth maestro Patrick Cowley in the 70s duo Catholic, and with 80s cult band Indoor Life. Together, they started Ceci N'est Pas in 2014, and this 7 inch "The Last Time" is their first release. The title track on the A-side is an irrestisibly melancholic and romantic synth wave pop song, while B-side "The Stranger" has a mysterious and yearning feel.

Following on 'Calling out of context' LP/CD, here is the vinyl edition from the CD that was with the CD/DVD pack from 'World of echo'. So also 18 tracks; track 1-14 is the full album as released in the eighties, track 15-18 are previously unreleased. Included are beatless versions of disco tracks like the AR produced Lola's 'Wax the Van', 'Treehouse' or 'Let's go swimming'. The music is very minimal, it's just Arthur singing in a meditative way and his cello playing, using echo/delay guitar boxes. But it's exactly this minimal setup that gives strength to the final output. Well recommended!

Another re-issue on Dark Entries. This time its a release by Joe Crow. Joe Crow is a post-punk musician from Birmingham, England. He was a member of legendary Brum band The Prefects, and hung on long enough after the name-change to appear on a couple of early Nightingales singles. In 1981 Joe began his solo career and recorded a 2-song demo Compulsion' and Absent Friends'. Joe sent copies of the finished recordings to Cherry Red, who thanks to Lawrence of Felt, ended up releasing the single in 1982. An edited version of the single would later appear on the compilation Pillows & Prayers' that collected songs which originated as 45s or EPs. Martin Gore of Depeche Mode subsequently covered Compulsion' on his 'Counterfeit' EP in 1989 forever solidifying its status in the cannon of UK melancholic synth pop. Compulsion' and Absent Friends' were originally intended as a double A-side. Composed, performed and recorded by Joe on an 8-track reel-to-reel at Sinewave Studio, Moseley Village in February 1981. Joe plays everything: guitar, bass, Boss Dr. Rhythm, Bee Gees Rhythm Machine, Wasp synthesizer, bongos stuffed with towels and an old tin tray for a snare drum. Everything was borrowed. Compulsion' is an imaginary suicide note, a meditation on loss and grief. Its dark twin Absent Friends' is an anti-song: no verses, choruses or middle-eight, some willfully odd chord progressions and plaintive yet melodic keyboard motif. Both songs are a spectral hybrid of alternating childlike and cynical vocals over lo-tech basement electronics with profound lyrics. This expanded 12' reissue adds 3 unreleased bonus tracks on the B-side taken from a mini-album of nine songs, recorded at the same time as Compulsion'. Originally titled Ken Blagdon Sings' with music by Joe Crow and lyrics by photographer Brendan Jackson, as a birthday present to the latter's girlfriend, Jacqui Neave. The whole session lasted one day and the line up was Brendan Jackson (alias Ken Blagdon, vocals/percussion), Joe Crow (vocals/bass/guitar/Boss Dr. Rhythm/Wasp synthesizer), Mark Rowson (drums), Helen Rowson (alto saxophone), Eamonn Duffy (Nightingales bassist, squawks) and Legs Akimbo (technicals). All songs have been remastered from the original master tapes for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The jacket is an exact replica of the 1982 edition enlarged for the 12' format, featuring front and back photos of Joe from a dawn beach shoot at Hayling Island, Hampshire, England. Each copy includes a two-sided newsprint insert with lyrics, never-before-seen photos and liner notes by Joe Crow and Robert Lloyd of the Nightingales. These songs are perfect new wave / post-punk tracks, full of attitude and dark romanticism.

AVIADOR DRO are true legends in Spain, and the authentic pioneers of electronic music in the country following steps of bands like Devo or Kraftwerk. Elefant Records is proud to release this beauty, a double album including demos, unreleased versions, rarities and big hits all previous to the release of their second album in 1983. Many of the songs on this album have never been into vinyl before.

The result is a real milestone of musical archeology, reflecting the most effervescent times of the band. Hiper-robotized, with post-nuclear and post-industrial look, with their rough but hipermelodic ambients, they really got an outer-worldy sound that sounds today as fresh as did back in time.

Thomas Leer is an innovative electronic musician who was born in Port Glasgow, Scotland. He began singing for a local band at age 13, and was writing his own music by 18. By 1977, he had moved to London, where he fronted Pressure, a Clash­-esque punk group with fellow experimental Scottish musician Robert Rental. After hearing Kraftwerk, Leer became interested in synthesizers - not long after, he was exploring the experimental techniques of Eno, Zappa, Beefheart, Faust, and Can. In 1978, Thomas released his first single, 'Private Plane'/'International', on his own Oblique Records. Both songs were recorded in his small Finsbury Park flat over three days, using a TEAC A3440 4-­track recorder and an ALICE mixing board. The only effects used were a Watkins Copicat tape echo unit, Electo Harmonix DrQ filter, an old Roland drum machine, and a Stylophone. So as to not wake his sleeping girlfriend, Leer's vocals were nearly whispered, which lends them a textural, psychedelic quality. NME named 'Private Plane' Single of the Week, and the hand-stamped first edition of 650 promptly sold out. For this expanded reissue, we've added 2 bonus tracks. 'Kings of Sham', from the 1981 Cherry Red Records sampler 'Business As Usual', is perfect motorik trance, echoing Conny Plank's 1970's productions. 'Saving Grace' is the extended instrumental version of Leer's second single 'All About You' from 1982, a slow­-burning cosmic work-out chock-full of anthemic synth riffs. All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The jacket is an exact replica of the 1978 handmade edition enlarged for the 12' format, featuring a cut and paste collage by Thomas. Medical Records presents a very special release and selection of works from Austin, Texas' undiscovered and never before released electronic/ambient artist Kitty from the early 1990s. This band should have had a proper release in the 90s, so for a lot of people, this is a long overdue accomplishment. Formed in 1994 by guitarists Dain Luscombe and Brandon Loe, the band eventually became a trio with the inclusion of drummer Clint Thorman. Over a handful of four-track cassettes, CDR's, and one unreleased EP, Kitty developed a sound unique even in the burgeoning psychedelic and electronic music scene that occurred along the I-35 corridor from Austin, Texas north to Denton as well as a rabid cult following. From their earliest performances as a three-piece, it was apparent that Kitty's music put them in a peerage of electronic and experimental acts coming out of the UK like Seefeel and Insides rather than another Texan 13th Floor Elevators style psych band. Not that Kitty was without distortion or psychedelia. Track 1, "Harrison" has both elements and is culled from the band's unreleased EP. It erupts with a momentous throb of noise that grinds through the build up and at its instrumental chorus, lifts to soar. The track ends with an accelerating rave-up that's less go-go and more electronic auto accident. The delicate and often-flirtatious delivery of vocalist Dain Luscombe is introduced on "Eva," also from 1996's unreleased EP. However influenced by the pop sensitivities of Morrisey and then Smiths, Kitty's music represented a progression, where the opening sentiment of the lyric hangs for one pregnant moment before a tiny glacier of sounds crush the melody out by its duration. "Aquarena" showcases a fair bit of tape bleed, sounding like the flip side of a friend's mix tape until the Farfisa heavy, ambient drone takes overtakes it, buries it, twists and corrupts it, redefining the cassette tape saturation by the end of the song as a place to nest and contemplate the journey. "Rosannarquette" is Kitty at their funkiest and most energetic. Its metronomic and frantic throb was a familiar staple of their live shows and would often set the audience to dancing in venues where big-assed beers and cigarettes were more common pastimes. Late in the B-side we get a hint at a different band entirely with "Stella" and "Heartofmine." These were possibly the last, distinctively rockist moments Kitty exhibited before hitting its stride and leaving the safety of traditional song structures for more experimental progressions. "Herzog" represents the band at its peak. Electronics burble, rhythms build mathematically, and sound moves in lines and waves. Then it all careens to a stop, once again leaving us hanging, before tossing us into a tape-splice break and a final return of enveloping electronics. Fans of acts such as the aforementioned Seefeel, Insides as well as other pioneering works by Flying Saucer Attack and A.R. Kane will adore this collection. FINALLY the time has come to re-release the first ever recordings by Belgian minimal synth masters Twilight Ritual. Released in 1982 in a tiny cassette edition this album has not been heard by many people. The Ritual" includes some of their best work, from mysterious dark synthpopsongs (Elegy) to club music (Webb-men) and the epic 14-minute track (Up To Now).

Twilight Ritual was/is the main project by Geert Coppens and Peter Bonne. During the early eighties they were involved in many other bands including Autumn and Linear Movement (both re-released on Minimal Wave), but Twilight Ritual is by far the most inspired project. The spirit of the band lingers on beneath the work of Autumn through A Split Second and stands besides the best tracks of bands such as Oppenheimer Analysis and League Of Nations.

Medical Records continues it's unearthing of extremely rare singles in it's Electroconvulsive Therapy series. Once again, teaming up with Crispy Nuggets blog, we have assembled yet another collection of long out of print and underground singles and rare tracks. This compilation includes 3 complete A + B sides from 7" singles + 4 other rare songs (2 from cassette, 1 A side of a 7", and 1 track featured on a rare 80s compilation LP). All original tracks are impossible to find for less than a mint on the collector's market. The first 2 tracks are by Belgium's Tipical Me from the Claustrofobian b/w Pope No Hope 7". These 2 tracks are perfect synth pop in every way. The second artist is UK's Secession, and we have included their debut 7" released in 1983. Though known for their later more electronic based pop and dance tracks, these two tracks display their earlier dark beginnings with chilling guitars and a more early 4AD aesthetic. Both tracks from the 7" are included. The third artist is France's Leidenschaft who released one lone 3-song cassette in 1986 with 2 of the tracks featured here. Leidenschaft could loosely be compared to early Clan of Xymox with French cold wave leanings. The 2 cuts are very atmospheric and lovely indeed. Back to the UK, we included the wonderfully minimal A + B sides of the rare 1984 7" by Black Fantasy. Original copies of this single have been selling for insanely high prices these days. 2 more tracks were also included on this compilation which complete the theme nicely. V.U.D. was an Italian outfit who recorded a track entitled "Look!" which was included on the "First Relation" v/a compilation LP released in 1983 on Mask Productions and curated by Lisfrank. Quirky and undeniably catchy, we absolutely adore this track as will everybody who hears it. The last track included on this LP is the A side of the rare 1984 7" by UK's Almost Alone entitled "Blue City". Dense and atmospheric synth pop with definite New Romantic tendencies, this track is a perfect closing track for this diverse collection. This collection will certainly appeal to fans of rare minimal synth, early synth pop, or EBM. This compilation allows anyone who has desired to have one or all of these quite expensive tracks on vinyl in the best sound quality possible. Additional mastering by Martin Bowes at the Cage, UK. Medical Records in partnership with Crispy Nuggets Blog present the unreleased recordings of England's Mixed Feelings. Mixed Feelings grew up in Basildon which was also the home of Depeche Mode (in fact, they went to the same school). In 1981, Sean Cooper met Martin Gore on holiday (around the time of "New Life"), and they instantly hit it off discussing synthesizers, school, teachers, etc. Martin was inspirational for Sean to follow his dream of making music. They played shows at school and various locations until 1982 when they first entered a studio and recorded "Final Demand", "Because Of You", and "Ice Machine". These tracks received some local airplay, and they continued to play more gigs. A year later, they entered the studio again to record a few more tracks (one of which was "Another Place" which ended up on the 101 Record Compilation). This LP is a collection of known recordings by Mixed Feelings. It is a brilliant snapshot into the minds and talent of a group of young musicians on a mission. The opening track "Another Place (Like Home)" sets the mood with melodic synth lines and punchy electronic accents. Excellent songwriting and moody atmospheres prevail on this record. 11 tracks in total (including one cover and homage to their inspiration early on...). Other notable tracks include "Because Of You", "They Told You So", and "The Captain". Highly influenced by early Depeche Mode, Human League, and Soft Cell, this collection of tracks will certainly appeal to fans of the mentioned acts as well as classic new wave acts such as Gary Numan, Ultravox, and Thompson Twins. Recorded in 2014, Stranger Than You marks a conscious return to the sounds and styles explored on their debut album Swimming in 1982. There's a strong element of reconnection,' explains singer/songwriter (and bassist) Michel Sordinia. Yet at the same time it's also about developing your own legitimate strangeness, just as the great Surrealist poet Rene Char invited his readers to do. A new mystery singing in your bones.'

Michel and guitarist Marc Deprez are joined by new members Laurent Loddewyckx (drums) and Christophe Boulenger (keyboards and piano). Stand-out tracks include the dynamic title track, Kids On Fire and quickfire Boy With A Gun, as well as more contemplative, elegiac numbers such as Lights and My Angel of Death.

The cover art is an original painting by long term Names associate Benoit Hennebert, celebrated for his work as design director for Les Disques du Crepuscule, with portrait photography by Peter Staessens. The double vinyl edition is housed in a deluxe gatefold sleeve and includes a free digital download code.

"Lies," a track from the now-defunct UK experimental group Bourbonese Qualk, get new life by way of a vinyl release on Mannequin Records with Ancient Methods on edit and remix duties. The release will contain also the original short-time version.
Bourbonese Qualk came into existence in 1979, and put out a stream of confrontational albums through much of the '80s and into the early '90s. After a long pause, their final album, On Uncertainty, came out in 2001, and the band disbanded the next year after the death of guitarist Miles Miles.

"Lies", a terse, TR 808 driven electro-tinged cut just under two minutes long, originally came out in 1986 on the Preparing For Power LP by way of the group's own label Recloose Organization.

Portion Control is a British electronic and industrial band from South London. The trio of John Whybrew, Ian Sharp and Dean Piavani started out experimenting with electronics in 1980. Linking up with In Phaze Records, they released a number of cassettes and records before signing with Illuminated Records in 1983. There followed a series of classic 12'' singles: 'Raise the Pulse', 'Rough Justice' and 'Go-Talk', which have become underground dancefloor hits. The band classifies their music style as 'Hard Rhythmic Electronics' and were a major influence on Skinny Puppy, Front Line Assembly and Depeche Mode. Going back a few years, the band released their first official vinyl album I Staggered Mentally on In Phaze Records in 1982. This album laid the template for the harder edged rhythmic industrial sound of the 80s and 90s. I Staggered Mentally is as raw as electronic music gets. Dean Piavani's anguished vocals are the lone human element amidst electric drones, metallic beats and alien analog flickers. Lead synths and effects were created with the Roland SH-09 and RS-09. The rhythm section was provided by the Roland TR-606 and then brand new TB-303 Bassline. Pulsing rhythmic tones were generated using the sample and hold feature of the Moog Rogue. This album documents the band's transition from Cabaret Voltaire-inspired experimentalists into proto-EBM and electro-industrial pioneers. It remains a shockingly brutal and viscerally exciting statement. All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. The jacket is an exact replica of the original 1982 edition featuring a pixelated man screaming. Each copy includes a 8 page, stapled pamphlet that contains press releases, concert flyers and photos circa the recording of I Staggered Mentally. The perfect soundtrack for the harsh, even malignant, urban-industrial nightmare.

Prague's Endless Illusion is stepping up with very first 12" release, debut EP from French producer IDEOMATIC with remix by Kid Machine. Strongly influenced by giallo soundtracks with a heavy dose of dance ammunition. Their first physical 12" release in the edition of limited 100 pcs.

Off the map, H-Burns' fourth album, is an album labeled, engineered, mixed and mastered by Steve Albini. And it's pretty obvious: fourteen tight songs, full-on (faithful to the motto hammered by Albini: 'feature it, or fuck it"), carved in eight days, by five people (drums, guitars, keyboards, bass), without ever leaving the studio. After the critical success of 'We go way back' and the recent collaboration with Chris Bailey of the legendary Australian band The Saints (Album Bailey / Burns), H-Burns continues on Off The Map to move towards a sound which is less and less harsh, but instead wider and wider. H-Burns dropped the plaid shirts, now they truly have become a great classy rock band, a band that doesn't know any borders. Off the Map is a world-record where the concepts of maps and territories are the cement of the lyrics, in a total symbiosis with the sound: brass performed by the musicians from Wilco's latest albums, a drummer who hits a snare drum from the 1930's, keyboard parts played on vintage instruments that sound like they haven't been touched for years. This new album of H-burns is also the first album released by the label Vietnam, tailor-made by their friends at So Foot, the magazine that has once been described by Voxpop as ' a punk football magazine which talks about football because it's the rock'n'roll of the modern world '. The Game is a typical futuristic dramatic italo/synthpop-song from 1983 that became a Belgian underground classic. Most famous is its instrumental mix, an impressive, ahead of the game pre-acid house anthem, later sampled by Moodymann on "Dem Young Sconies". Still relevant almost 30 years later.

By exhuming these obscurities from the dustbin of history, BORN BAD have decided otherwise. Archaeologists with an agenda, they seek to give Jean Pierre Decerf the renown he deserves: that of an innovator whose rhythmic, synthetic compositions inspired the harbingers of the French Touch (Air comes to mind), not to mention some East Coast rappers.

Medical Records continues on it's exploration of seminal 1990s reissues with the 1994 masterpiece "Silver Apples Of The Moon" by England's Laika. Originally released on the iconic Too Pure label in 1994, this record has long been out of print on vinyl. The members of Laika hailed from various interesting places. Margaret Fiedler was actually born in Chicago but relocated to London to pursue musical interests and was one of the vocalists and songwriters for Moonshake (also on Too Pure) as well as a previous member of Ultra Vivid Scene. Guy Fixsen was (and still is to this very day), a renowned audio engineer and producer. In fast, he was involved in the infamous production of My Bloody Valentine's "Loveless". The bass player John Frenett was also in Moonshake and left that band the same time as Fiedler after their first USA tour. The drummer, Lou Ciccotelli, had previously played in Kevin Martin's band God. The band also had a saxophonist, Louise Elliot. "Silver Apples Of The Moon" was Laika's first album and is almost unclassifiable. Taking a very forward-thinking approach, the sound is the result of a very unique equation of live drums/percussion, layered guitars/samples, and diverse analog tones that all fuse together to form a hypnotic polyrhythmic combination that was truly original. Too Pure was known for it's cutting edge roster including Seefeel, Mouse On Mars, and Pram. Laika was certainly no exception to these game-changing artists. The opening track "Sugar Daddy" explodes from the first note into a percussive frenzy that is quite dizzying before it smolders a bit and is layered with various samples that propel the track. "Coming Down Glass" exudes a more mutated trip-hop form with thick powerful bass lines. Other standout tracks include the intense "Red River" and the harder track "44 Robbers". While it is exceedingly difficult to draw any similarities of this album with other artists, one can make loose associations (or at least influenced by) some of the most challenging percussive experiments of Miles Davis, the brilliant exotica of Martin Denny, and the gut churning bass magic created by Jah Wobble in early PIL. Fans of the crucial and long lasting mark left by the Too Pure artists such as Pram and the like will definitely need to own this album if they have never heard it. For most fans, the original vinyl LP was not available or accessible (especially in the USA). The masters for which this reissue is sourced were directly transferred from the vinyl master source material courtesy of Beggars Limited with the utmost care and quality. The LP jacket features similar original artwork, and the LP contains a bonus insert with an engaging interview and write up by Dave Segal featuring exclusive interviews with Guy Fixsen and Margaret Fiedler. Medical Records in collaboration with Crispy Nuggets is proud to present a collection of tracks by Post Industrial Noise. PIN was an "audio artsemble" conceived in 1982 in Columbus, Ohio by the trio Robert Crise Jr, Gerald F. Nelson, and Dana Riashi Ritchey. They started on a drum machine, guitars, and vocals but quickly evolved to one member on synths and two guitarists on occasional synths. Robert Crise Jr maintained a studio titled "The Center For Contemporary Realism" where he conceived most of the lyrics for PIN. Gerald F. Nelson was a local performance artist, and Dana Riashi (OSU art student) claimed to be the "idea-mediator" between Robert and Gerald. Robert produced a flexidisc of PIN material through an Ohio Arts Council grant and distributed it through the OSU art tabloid "Dialogue". The accompanying article from Cleveland's Spaces Gallery noted PIN to have "redigested their input from influence bands such as Tangerine Dream, PIL, and Kraftwerk, to produce their own unique sound". PIN performed mainly in galleries and occasionally clubs at the time. They produced a cassette release and were soon feeling the pressure to specialize towards more concrete art performance or club venues. It was this pressure that soon led all activity of PIN to a strangling halt unfortunately. Robert soon left Ohio for graduate studies in Detroit where he remains a "future archeologist" today. Gerald and Dana then proceeded to form the outfit Near Paris (reissued on Medical Records in 2013). The output of PIN could be described a more experimental/minimalist offshoot of new wave with pleasant synth sequences blanketed in rich synth tones. Fans of Near Paris will obviously draw comparisons, but the overall feel of PIN is a bit darker and possibly more lo-fi in all aspects. The opening track "Sketch" has a definite cold wave vibe with slightly echoed vocals over a subtle drum machine beat and monotonous synth lines. "Prelude" is a deep instrumental cut with synth and sample interplay resulting in a hypnotic slab of brilliance. The tracks on this collection have been restored from the original analog tape reel for this reissue. For fans of the previously reissued Near Paris and other synth outfits such as Chris & Cosey, early 80s new wave, and even more edgy artists such as Suicide. Remastered by Martin Bowes at the Cage Studios, UK. Presented on high-quality 180gram heavyweight colored vinyl.

This new album of H-burns is also the first album released by the label Vietnam, tailor-made by their friends at So Foot, the magazine that has once been described by Voxpop as ' a punk football magazine which talks about football because it's the rock'n'roll of the modern world '. The Debut album "Less Ness" from contemporary Bay Area duo, Max and Mara. Their collaboration began in 2012. Max is based in Oakland and has been a part of various projects most notably Brotman and Short and his current solo work as Business Etiquette. Mara is based in San Francisco and is known for her solo work as Group Rhoda.

At the end of 1981, brothers Darrin and Stephen Huss and schoolmate Dwayne Goettel performed for the first time as Psyche in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. Their live show was a combination of horror and electronics that was completely unprecedented in Western Canada. Although Goettel and the Huss brothers parted ways before Psyche was to release any material, the masters containing Dwayne Goettel's performances were preserved in the band's vaults. Now, 19 years after Goettel's untimely passing in 1995, Dark Entries records presents ''Re-Membering Dwayne'', the original Psyche-Dwayne Goettel sessions. All tracks were recorded and mixed on 4-track during a single day in March of 1983. Psyche's early material is visceral and abrasive, a far cry from the sleek, dark synthpop they'd later become known for. Like the body horror films of fellow Canadian David Cronenberg, Psyche disquietingly conflate the organic and the mechanical, calling into question the limits of the human form. Dwayne, who would join Skinny Puppy a few years later, contributes heavily to this more aggressive, disturbing sound. All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Each LP includes a 12-page booklet with excerpts from Darrin Huss' diary, unpublished photos of Psyche with Dwayne, and an essay by Darrin reflecting on Psyche's past and the Goettel legacy as well as lyrics. This collection is a glimpse at the early Canadian industrial scene and the roots of Skinny Puppy. Go take a walk in the past with an ear for the future; you just might learn something.

Crafty, full range, minimalist to EBM leaning Techno set

Following the January release of their celebrated second album, The Age of Fracture, CYMBALS close the year out with a limited edition 7' entitled What Eternity, featuring two new songs - 'Talk To Me' and 'Innocence'. Both songs were produced by Dreamtrak and mixed by Dan Rejmer. Marking the end of what has been an incredibly eventful twelve months, the 7' will be released on 12th January through Tough Love. The songs on What Eternity come to the wider world at almost the same time they did to the band - both tracks were recorded in September of this year, very soon after CYMBALS returned from their first US tour. Emboldened by the reception they received from audiences in cities thousands of miles from home, a concerted effort was made to harness the energy and enthusiasm of those US shows and to create something that reflected the band right now. The circumstances around The Age of Fracture dictated it be recorded over a long period of time, whereas there is a immediacy to these new songs at odds with the long stretches of time that often bridge the gap between a song being recorded and its release - they are very much of the moment, both direct and vital. As such, they might well be CYMBALS' best songs to date. As singer Jack, says: "These songs are close to what I am feeling during this current moment, in other words this season, or the stretch of time from spring to autumn this year. They are a little more personal and introspective, which is some kind of difference for us. We don't want to explain them too much, given that so many words accompanied the album we wrote last year and released earlier this year - these songs have no notes with them, no explanations, no justifications. The only thing we should say is that the title is borrowed from a book by Marguerite Yourcenar, who herself borrowed it from a poem. We've messed with the punctuation and in so doing changed the meaning to suit what we wanted to say."

Medical Records presents the debut full-length release of Le Cliche, entitled 'Consumer Behaviour'. The album consists of 11 songs influenced largely by European synth pop of the late 1970's and early 1980's (The Human League, John Foxx, OMD, early Depeche Mode, Japan, Gary Numan, Propaganda and Kraftwerk.). The music might be best described as minimal synth, synth pop, postmodernist, cold assembly line with neo consumerist themes, based on the use of synth sequences and virtual voices. Le Cliche is the synth project of Gerard Ryan, native of Limerick (Ireland). All of the tracks on the album are from the 2012-2014 period except for 'I woke up this morning (like I always do)', which is a reimagining of a 1984 demo of the track entitled 'I dreamt I was dead'. 'Production Line', is the mostly instrumental opening track to the album which clearly displays its Kraftwerkian influences. The album was written and recorded in Catalonia, Spain (2012-13) and during the harsh winter of 2013-14 in frozen upstate New York, USA. The Le Cliche sound is attained by combining a mix of old and new technologies. The LP is presented on high-quality 180gram heavyweight colored white vinyl and features a bonus LP insert.

Mannequin Records is elated to present a 12'' EP with two unreleased 1986 tracks of the mexican New Wave band Casino Shanghai, with a killer analog modular remix by In Aeternam Vale on the B Side.
Asking to Laurent Prot to rework Casino Shanghai was more than logic. Permeated by a strong mitteleuropean dark pop atmosphere, here emphasized by the french lyrics ('La Tumba De Edgar Allan Poe" is using a poem by the french writer Stephane Mallarmé), Casino Shanghai were the pulse of Mexico City underground scene of the 80's. Former members of the post punk band Size and the more experimental Decibel, Carlos Robledo and Walter Schmidt met the leader singer of Denseundergrowth Ulalume to record their first album "Film" for the Comrock/ WEA label that was released in December of 1985. The history of Casino Shanghai is double locked with the great cultural change in Mexico and the connected music scene.

Dark Entries release 'Uno', a collection of early recordings from seminal Italian electronic act Kirlian Camera. Keyboardist/vocalist Angelo Bergamini founded the project in Parma in 1979. 'Uno' compiles 11 songs. Kirlian Camera's clean, minimalist new wave is marked by strong haunting melodies, slow moving synth washes, and stark, dramatic vocals.

Minimal Wave present a 12' EP of tracks from the archives of Sheffield based electronic music legend Richard H. Kirk, who came to prominence in the 1970s as a member of the seminal industrial band Cabaret Voltaire. His first release as a solo artist, Disposable Half-Truths, came out in 1980 on Throbbing Gristle's Industrial Records label. On the EP, we compile tracks originally recorded between 1978 and 1987, which have never before been released on vinyl.

Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem have teamed up to release 'Catholic', the lost opus of disco pioneer Patrick Cowley and Indoor Life vocalist Jorge Socarras. Perhaps one of the most revolutionary and influential people in the canon of disco music, Cowley created his own brand of Hi-NRG dance music, 'The San Francisco Sound.' Born in Buffalo, NY on October 19, 1950, Patrick moved to San Francisco at the age of 21. He studied at the City College of San Francisco and met Jorge Socarras in 1973 through mutual friends. The duo's first collaboration was a ten-minute trance-inducing epic that Cowley composed for a performance piece by Socarras in 1975. Patrick, who played drums, guitar and keyboards, provided the perfect match for Jorge's vocal talents. Between 1975 and 1977 they recorded an album's worth of material before Socarras moved to London and Cowley started playing synthesizers for Sylvester. Upon Jorge's return to San Francisco in 1979, the duo would re-record some of the 'Catholic' songs with Patrick's newly acquired equipment. Meanwhile, Socarras met the musicians with whom he would form Indoor Life, and in 1980 Patrick co-produced their first album. The 'Catholic' album was offered to San Francisco's Megatone Records who passed on it. Fast forward to 2007 when Honey Soundsystem was contacted by John Hedges, former co-owner of Megatone Records. Hedges' was moving to Palm Springs and invited the crew over to his basement to collect over 2,000 records from his collection. Among the archives were three moldy boxes of quarter inch reel to reel tapes featuring unreleased music by Cowley, including the 'Catholic' material. The reel was passed on to Stefan Goldmann of Macro Recordings in Berlin who was able to track down Jorge Socarras and clear the rights. 'Catholic' was finally released on CD in 2009. 'Catholic' is a genre-bending concept album that ranges from minimalistic proto-techno to synth-driven post-punk, pre-dating the dance punk acts LCD Soundsystem and The Rapture by almost 30 years. It shows a much broader range than any Cowley or Socarras material available and gives a totally new perspective to one of the most inspiring eras in music history. Influenced by Tomita, Wendy Carlos, the Velvet Underground, and Roxy Music, 'Catholic' prefigures acts like Talking Heads, Units, The Human League or Chris & Cosey. Patrick forges a unique electronic sound from his collection of synthesizers, modified guitars, and self-constructed equipment while Jorge's vocals go from hypnotic to camp, singing about gay love juju and tackling classics by Donovan and Stoller & Leiber. Featuring over 80 minutes of music never before released on vinyl, this compilation contains two bonus tracks not featured on the CD release. The tapes were meticulously restored by mastering guru Rashad Becker at D+M in Berlin, then remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley, CA. The vinyl comes housed in a glossy dual pocket gatefold featuring the intended album cover from the original 'Catholic' photo shoot in 1979, and the original hand-lettering by Arch Connelly aka A. Style intended for the first 45rpm single. Inside the gatefold sleeve contains lyrics and an essay from Jorge Socarras. For the 32nd anniversary of Patrick's death, Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem present a glimpse into the minds of these two geniuses. These recordings shine a new light on the experimental side of a disco legend who was taken too soon. All proceeds from 'Catholic' will be donated to the San Francisco AIDS Housing Alliance.

Next year, Light In The Attic will release a detailed series showcasing the work of impassioned poet, painter, actor, and prolific, self-taught musician Lizzy Mercier Descloux. Instrumental in the late 70s New York underground yet of Parisian origin, Mercier Descloux, with partner Michel Esteban, established the magazine Rock News and ran in the same circles as Patti Smith and Richard Hell. Lizzy became a genre defying artist and pioneer of worldbeat and avant garde rock, and supreme minimalist of the no wave genre in her own right. A glimpse of what's in store for this upcoming archival series, this 7" presents two key tracks from the Mercier Descloux catalog: the epitomic, 1979 disco-punk classic "Fire" backed with a rare session featuring Lizzy and "Godmother of Punk" Patti Smith reciting a bilingual version of Arthur Rimbaud's poem, "Matinée d'ivresse/Morning High," set to music by experimental contemporary Bill Laswell.

In 1978, legendary label ZE Records released a mini-album by Mercier Descloux's performance art duo, Rosa Yemen, and went on to release several of Lizzy's solo albums. Her debut solo album, Press Color, consists of eight songs owing more to disco, funk, and film scores than punk rock, all recorded within a two week span. Lizzy's second solo release, Mambo Nassau, evokes Talking Heads' "Zimbra" and "Born Under Punches," riddled with off-kilter-time-keeping, flailing guitars, and lush basslines. Heavily influenced by African music, art rock, funk, and soul, Mercier Descloux's music gained extreme popularity in her native France, the height of which came with her 1984 album, Zulu Rock. The album seems a more vivacious and enthralling harbinger for Paul Simon's Graceland. ZE Records' Michel Esteban recalls, "This South African music reminded us, as incredible as it may sound, of The Velvet Underground."

Lizzy spent the next two decades living somewhat nomadically in Africa, France, New York, South America, and the West Indies, never ceasing her pursuit of the arts as she transitioned from music to painting and writing. Mercier Descloux was diagnosed with cancer in 2003 and passed away the following year. This year marks the ten-year anniversary of Lizzy Mercier Descloux's death; the five albums in store for 2015 (CD/LP/Digital) will be newly remastered with bonus tracks, expanded artwork, photos, and new liner notes.

impLOG was the solo project of Don Christensen after leaving New York No Wave group The Contortions in 1979. He began making music using found sounds, a Univox drum machine, guitar stomp boxes, Casio keyboards and percussion instruments. 'Holland Tunnel Dive' is a monotone lament, with a narrator reciting a list of all that is missing in his life along to a sparse, mechanical beat. A variable speed Milwaukee drill creeps its way into the song, eventually reaching cacophonous levels. After four minutes of industrial motorik, an upbeat saxophone riff breaks out unexpectedly, unsettling the listener even further.
