Various - Disco Made Me Do It - Volume 2

After the rip-roaring success of Disco Made Me Do It Vol 1, Riot Records hit you with four more Nu Disco whirlwinds from Danny Kane, Massiande, Chevals and Mark Brickman remixed by the likes of Art Of Tones, Moodena and Michael Gray.

Lorca - Tribute To Larry EP

Lorca

Tribute To Larry EP

12inchLIVE006
Live Ones
25.05.2021

Live Ones let loose label boss Lorca for their sixth release - a tribute to the one and only, Larry Levan.

The A side ‘Larry’s Bomb’ channels that inner disco fire burning deep within. Extended and re-blended Lorca takes the essence of the Paradise Garage and reworks it with a modern tinge.

Flip it to find ‘Look What You Do’, a sun-soaked disco house number perfect for hazy, care-free days as equally as it is for bubbling up dancefloors.

Jansons - Heartbreaker

One of the UK’s most exciting producers and the man responsible for one of Circus Recordings biggest records ‘Switch’, Jansons, takes the reigns in style for Revival New York’s first release.

With the insatiable appetite for his Lovehrtz EPs, alongside Richy Ahmed, causing sell outs as soon as they’re dropped, Jansons brings his bumping, tech house style to Revival. Exquisitely looping up vocal samples, swirling guitar riffs and sweeping strings in ‘Heartbreaker’, Jansons creates a blissful, slice of ecstasy that will be sure to melt more than a few hearts, minds, and souls.

The vinyl only ‘Alternative Mix’ takes things deeper, chopping and filtering the vocal snippets with a nod to early 2000’s house whilst letting that rapturous bass line take centre stage.

Early DJ Support:

Hot Since 82, Danny Howard, Richy Ahmed, Skream.

Abstrack
31.07.2020

Abstrack proudly introduces the first of its new series of edits. The music on the record is a direct echo of the vibes found at Abstrack parties. These have been going on for over 8 years, taking place at roughly any time of day or night. The music on the record, dancing somewhere between dreamy slow motion tracks, peak-time weapons, and french singing anthem, was intended for the party rather than for the record and they’ve been rocking Nantes’ best-hidden dances for a while already. Now we’re happily putting them out for everyone to enjoy and rock their own party.

OPOLOPO vs YELLOWJACKETS / EDDIE HARRIS - Opolopo Tweaks

Opolopo returns to GAMM and delivers his characteristic blend of soulful and jazzy dance music like never before.

Yellowjackets 'Matinee Idol' gets a supreme uptempo treatment and gives you an instant feel-good factor. Together with some very smart vocal samples from Whitney Houston this is 100% peak time material.

On the B-side Opolopo went on a deep search and found an overlooked Eddie Harris jazz-fusion jam from 1987 that comes with some amazing doo-wop scatting vocals and amazing keyboard action from Opolopo himself.
Jazzy, bumpy and very dance-friendly.

Not just edits, tweaks!

Red Baron - Fascinate

Red Baron

Fascinate

12inchREDBAR001
RED BARON
14.06.2021

The only question we should be asking about Ron Basejam and Red Rack’em getting in a studio together is ‘why did it take them so long?’ The Crazy P multi-instrumentalist brings a melodic sheen and strict work ethic to Berman's idiosyncratic, off kilter sample chops. We’re very excited to be bringing the first in a series of killer twelves from two artists who bring a huge amount of passion, soul and singularity to their music.

The infamous Crazy P studio in Nottingham, the scene of many a lost braincell for the pair became a different kind of playground with an arsenal of synths and the Basejam sample library proving fruitful. Several mammoth studio sessions were fitted in pre-lockown with both taking turns to lead when the other flagged. You can hear the grit in these tracks. Studio chiz, red wine and Alfreton Road kebabs fuelled these sessions. Buckle up for the Red Baron ride.

'Fascinate' is a foot stomping house banger hoedown which distils their collective years of sample voyaging into a taut yet jumpy floor wrecker. Uptight, urgent popped guitar licks and a face squinting bassline are mixed upfront with the track devolving at every chance with many a detour including the most warm uplifting middle eighth. A monster arpeggiated synth bass closes proceedings with a dark, knowing edge to the distant hardcore pads fading in.

'She Makes It Work' fuses stoner hippy tabla with a deviant tinged vocal benignly muttering missives while the second pill begins to kick in. Uplifting mangled chords meld with an ever building mood towards a deliriously melting peak moment. As with the A side, the track ends in a questioning manner taking the listener to another plane. This is a cosmic spiritual loft party 7am burner. A late '70s community group going off piste at a Wednesday night drumming circle by serving up the wrong punch.

OPOLOPO vs HEADHUNTERS / SYLVIA ST JAMES - OPOLOPO vs HEADHUNTERS / SYLVIA ST JAMES

One of the most significant rare groove tracks ever recorded plus Opolopo = magic!

Headhunters 'God Made Me Funky' get a respectful and tasteful tweak where Opolopo gives it an uplifting face job for today's dance floors.
As always, additional keys and production are the standards here...proper.

On the B-side Opolopo goes towards the soulful house territory with a big and uplifting rework weak of Sylvia St. James downtempo classic 'Motherland'.

Not just edits, tweaks!

Betty Lou Landreth - I Can’t Stop - Vocal c/w Instrumental

Exclusive vocal c/w instrumental mixes of Betty Lou Landreth’s ‘I Can’t Stop’ on this lead-single for the forthcoming Backatcha re-release of Betty Lou Landreth's in-demand 1979 album, "Betty Lou” (cat# BK037 – to be announced). Expanded to a double album, it features the original studio recordings along with bonus material and alternative takes. The late Betty Lou Landreth had already paid her singing dues long before she walked into Studio A at Detroit’s Superdisc, touring with the USO and performing with R&B and Jazz players on the live circuit.

‘I Can’t Stop’ producers Joel Palmer and Charlie Gabriel recruited some of Motor City’s top fellow musicians for the session, including Gabriel’s longtime friend and housemate, trumpeter Marcus Belgrave, arranger Travis Biggs, drummer J.C. Heard, Motown Funk Brothers’ pianist Joe Hunter and trumpeters Herbie Wilson and John Wilson, keys player Emmanuel Riggins, bassist Hubie Crawford, the Body sisters and many more.

"We just got together to cook up a gumbo. Detroit, New Orleans, funk, jazz, torch, country and some great, great musicians to bring the flavours together."

Joel Palmer, 2021.

Diogo Strausz - Emancipacao EP

Diogo Strausz

Emancipacao EP

7"-VinylRNT45007
RAZOR N TAPE
10.03.2021

Having previously released on RNT as part of duo Balako, Diogo Strausz now makes his solo debut on the label with an absolutely stunning offering of electronic Brazilian jazz. A São Paulista now living in Paris, Strausz made international waves earlier this year with his piece ‘Pausa,’ a grand and sprawling orchestral work written and recorded by musicians around the world in isolation.

The two songs on Strausz’ new Emancipação EP showcase his gift for instrumental composition that feels at once both fresh and timeless, informed heavily by the classic Bossa Nova and Samba repertoires of his native Brazil, yet translated through a modern production lens, and executed with exceptional musicianship. The end result is an undeniably unique sound that will fit equally well in the collections of jazz and MPB aficionados, as in the crates of modern DJs and listeners alike.

IDRISSA SOUMAORO ET L´ECLIPSE DE - NISSODIA MIKE D EDIT

'Legend' is lofty praise that is often used lightly, however, Mike D from the Beastie Boys certainly is one in the truest of spirits. We are delighted after over 30 years of being involved in music to finally release a project involving such a hip-hop pioneer and icon as Mike. In keeping with the maverick attitude of the Beastie Boys, you don't always get what you expect. For this release there isn't a hip-hop beat, instrumental-funk or hardcore-punk joint in sight, rather an electronic-African club banger.

Mike took it upon himself to rework Malian artists Idrissa Soumaoro and L'Eclipse De L'I.J.A. and their track ‎’Nissodia', which is taken from the 'Le Tioko-Tioko' album originally released in 1978 on the German Democratic Republic (GDR) label ETERNA. The song was also featured on 'The Original Sound Of Mali' compilation released on Mr Bongo back in 2017.

It was November 2019 and the day before a Mr Bongo 30 years celebration event in Paris at the Pedro party in the 'New Morning' club, when out of the blue the remix landed in Dave Mr Bongo's inbox. We loved it straight away and decided to road test it the next night in the club. Whether it be a remix/re-edit/rework, it doesn't matter, what does matter is that it works spectacularly in the club and had people jumping on the stage to dance at the party. A sensational track and one which leaves a beautiful memory of good-times from a night out in Paris (and one which is in retrospect is even more poignant as the late-great maestro Tony Allen was in the club that night), and we are sure it will light up many more dancefloors to come.

JARC - Move On Up / U Make Me Hot

Round three of JARC’s audacious, aural onslaught comes in the for of a double header of incendiary cuts, reworking that disco sound with hypnotic grooves and beefed up low ends, best served at full blast.

First up, you’re hit with ‘Move On Up’, looped, echoed and powered out into the cosmos. Earworm synth and sax hooks meet choice vocal snippets and a pumping beat.

Flip it over for a salacious number, ‘U Make Me Hot’ drenched in horns, guitar struts, and all too enticing vocals, tied together with a boisterous bassline that will rumble the very ground you stand on.

The new release on 45 Loves features Beastie’s and Biggie’s both on each side over some cherry-picked Moar beats. Vocals fit so snug that we wonder what life would be like if Moar had grown up in New-York City in the 90's. Dancefloors were made for this, quality stuff. The Owl - Bareknuckle Blues EP

After 3 stomping collaborations with Burnski’s brilliant new label Cardiology Records, The Owl is back on his own relentlessly impressive imprint.

Owl Records is a proven staple for serious disco and house jocks, including regular plays and exclusive DJ Mix on Craig Charles’ hugely popular national BBC Radio 6 Funk and Soul show.

Now he brings us the aptly named ‘Bare-knuckle Blues ep’ serving up four tracks that will raise heads on any dance-floor. Kicking off with the chunky blues stomper ‘In The Right Place’, The Owl instantly shows his intelligence for turning an originally potentially funky number into a big speaker blaster with enough new groove to forget the era it came from, while paying tribute to that time.

Track two, ‘Fair’ has more of an original blues vibe but the percussion suits the bass so well that you feel you’re hearing a live band playing a current track. His clever cuts make it a must for anybody that loves their funk with a bit more ‘pow’.

The B-side does not let up on the level of energy, flying straight into the female vocal gem ‘Be Funky’, yelling through the speakers that “Everything I do gon be funky from now on”. And this is certainly true from the Owl.

The final track is only slightly a step down in tempo from the others but rounds off this classic ‘bluesy-house’ EP in The Owl’s usual classy, funky style. Expect this to sell as fast as he flies.

Plainwrap Band - Baby Don't Leave Me Here / How Does It Feel

Produced and arranged by Marvin Augustus this early outing from The Plainwrap Band lay dusty on a reel that somehow had become in the hands of Producer Stu Gardner.

The reels were transferred and we liked what we heard.

We took the time to find Marvin who had forgot about the reel he cut in 1976 around 5 years prior to their first release "The Ghetto Bird". And to its whereabouts.

For this early recording some of the best West Coast musicians were drafted in for "Baby don't leave me here"/"How does it feel".
