It's a miracle any copies of this privately pressed album survived - but be thankful it did, for here is an individual vision. Some people worry about when we'll run out of oil. A rather smaller proportion of us worry about when we'll run out of discoverable, deep-end thrills like this. There is just no way in the world items like Donald Hooker's 40-year-old privately pressed LP should even exist as a thing - it more than likely only ran to about 99 copies in its original format, so how the hell did even one of those survive to create these new digital and analogue versions decades later Connecticut-based Hooker - a tall, slim hippy with a history of substance abuse - was much given to wearing the sort of austere robe he sports on the sleeve, a fairly outré move even then. In early 1972 he hired a gang of local scene musicians to flesh out his wonderful songs and after a few brief rehearsals the band began recording. As soon as they were done they split - some never even heard the finished album, and what a treat they missed. Hooker's arrangements are truly beautiful, a simple, swinging pop song like Weather Girl exists somewhere between The Doors and Curtis Mayfield, whereas The Bible ("If they'reknocking the Bible, be sure they are bent/ Just see and you'll understand the book is heaven sent") has the propulsive drive of a pained George Harrison ballad crushed up against some of Neil Young's freeform, string-banging joy.

Apocalyptica is an extraordinary Metal band from Helsinki, Finland formed in 1993. The band is composed of classically trained cellists Eicca Toppinen, Paavo Lötjönen, and Perttu Kivilaakso (all three of whom are graduates of the Sibelius Academy in Helsinki) and drummer Mikko Sirén. Originally a Metallica classical tribute band, the band eventually adopted a neoclassical Metal style without the use of conventional guitars. They have sold over four million albums to date.

Inquisition Symphony (1998) is their second studio album. The album branches from their previous effort, containing only four Metallica covers. The remainder of the compositions are by Faith No More, Pantera, and Sepultura, as well as three originals by Apocalyptica bandleader Eicca Toppinen. Max Lilja did the arrangements for 'One'.

Dream Theater's first album with new vocalist James LaBrie is an excellent mix of various progressive metal styles. Berklee music school alumni John Petrucci on the six strings, bassist John Myung and drummer Mike Portnoy show impressive ability on their instruments.

Standout tracks include the complex "Metropolis, Pt. 1", "Pull Me Under" (also released as a single and video, an MTV favourite in 1992), "Take the Time" and the 11-minute "Learning to Live."

Images And Words proves that Dream Theater's musicianship and songwriting are above the norm, and they proved to hold up this high standard for years to come.

The first eight songs of the fourth Life Of Agony album are recorded live and unplugged at the Lowlands festival in 1997 (except 'River Runs Red', which was actually recorded with electric guitars with volume on 11. Song 9 ('Other Side Of The River') is a remix by David Thoener, and the last 7 songs are live bonus tracks (also, not 'unplugged').

Nailbomb's impressive debut Point Blank (1994), an Industrial, sample-heavy Metal/Hardcore project of Sepultura/Soulfly front man Max Cavalera and producer Alex Newport (Fudge Tunnel) got rave reviews in the mid Nineties. The final release of Nailbomb, the live album Proud To Commit Commercial Suicide, was recorded at the
1995 Dynamo Festival in Eindhoven, The Netherlands.

With 110.000 attendees, this was the biggest Dynamo Festival that was ever put together. Featuring a line-up of bands like Machine Head, Life Of Agony, Biohazard, Downset, Dog Eat Dog, Fear Factory, and many more, this was truly an event people from around the world wouldn't miss.

Nailbomb's only live appearance, the title says it all - it's a worthy goodbye to their fans who supported the group from day one. The last two tracks were recorded at Chaton Studios, Scottsdale, Arizona, in July 1995.

1999 is the fifth studio album by Prince, originally released by Warner Bros in 1982 and now lovingly re-issued by Rhino with original content.

According to the Rolling Stone Album Guide, "1999 may be Prince's most influential album: Its synth-and-drum machine-heavy arrangements codified the Minneapolis sound that loomed over mid-'80s R&B and pop, not to mention the next two decades' worth of electro, house, and techno."

The S to S album is one of those obscurities that have remained unknown to collectors of hardrock for many years. We present the first ever reissue with the band's story told for the first time.

S to S emerged out of the ashes of local band Etna, featuring the Cannella brothers: Fulvio on lead guitar and Mirco on bass along with George Abry on drums. After the demise of Etna, the Cannella brothers decided to form a power-trio: S to S was born.

Upon meeting producer Michel Dickenscheid, they were offered a deal: the band would help Michel to build a new recording studio in exchange of free studio time with the intention of recording their first album, which would be produced by Michel. So they built a state-of-the art studio with their own hands and soon after the recording of the S to S album started. Mirco switched from bass to guitar so they recruited a new bass player, Picci Salvatore, who abandoned the band just after the recording sessions. A friend of the band played occasional keyboards and Michel, the producer, played sax on 'I'm fool', the most psychedelic sounding song of the album, similar to early Hawkwind. The rest of the songs are prime examples of pure hardrock featuring layers and layers of fuzzed-out guitars and killer riffs by Fulvio, a monstrous sound created by producer Michel using primitive homemade pedal effects and up to four guitar overdubs.

The album was completed in early 1977 but remained in the shelf until the following year. The band members were very pissed off when they received the albums from the pressing plant and discovered that their manager had included a logo with Sig runes lettering in the cover without consulting them. Only 300 copies were pressed on their own Overcome label. Meanwhile Mirco formed a punk band named Acétylène but decided to concentrate on S to S soon after.

S to S continued right into the 80s with some changes in their line-up, playing many successful shows in Belgium, changing their style towards a more heavy-blues-rock sound, before splitting in 1982.

Santana's appearance at the Rynearson Stadium (Ypsilanti, MI) on May 25, 1975, was originally broadcast on the King Biscuit Flower Hour radio show. Opening with an inspired pairing of Peter Green's Black Magic Woman and Gabor Szabo's Gypsy Queen, Santana display an explosive showcase of virtuosity and improvisational flare throughout the show with familiar material from the band's earlier repertoire receiving a rapturous response. Such fluent and imaginative musicianship is rarely witnessed and simultaneously recorded, but this 1975 concert displays compelling musical talent played with emphatic furore. The 1975 Ypsilanti performance clearly rivals that of the band's famed Japanese shows recorded two years earlier. Klondike's retrospective release of this seminal appearance from 1975 captures the entire recorded performance and celebrates a period of Santana's work that remains pivotal to their legacy.

Having played with Gary Burton, Jaco Pastorius and other leading fusion musicians, the prodigious Pat Metheny made his solo recording debut in 1976. The following year he released Watercolors, marking the start of his long collaboration with pianist Lyle Mays. That summer they played various dates (together with bassist Mark Egan and drummer Danny Gottlieb). The superb tracks featured here include material from Watercolors and the forthcoming Pat Metheny Group album, and were originally broadcast on KJAZ-FM. They're presented here together with background notes and images.

Welsey Gonzalez has announced his debut AA single in 'I Spoke to Euan' alongside flip 'Come Through and See Me', out 20th May on 7' vinyl, via Moshi Moshi Records' Singles Club (Florence and the Machine, Lykke Li, Friendly Fires).

After ten years in the guitar shredding, pop-punk band Let's Wrestle, which culminated in a chaotic sold-out final outing in London's 100 Club, as reported by The Guardian, Gonzalez taught himself to play piano and set his sights on an entirely different approach to songwriting.

Out of this new experimentation 'I Spoke to Euan' was born, a somewhat somber tale of excess and over-indulging whilst on tour, regaled by Gonzalez in his signature clear-cut in content, dramatic lyrical delivery.

Setting the scene with a tranquil key arrangement, the song soon bursts into life - hazy, reverberating synths pair with a steadily building rhythm section - before Gonzalez spills his story via theatrical, far-reaching choruses.

On 'I Spoke To Euan', he states: 'We had travelled for a whole day getting to where we were staying after playing Primavera, I was overexcited, drinking a lot and smoking a lot. I think I found it hard to completely ease into it. I went to sleep and had a nightmare that woke me up crying uncontrollably, not really understanding why'.

Upon finding the only other band-member awake was Euan Hinshelwood (Younghusband), a conversation between the two made Gonzalez 'think a lot about how I struggle letting my mind get into a place where I can be relaxed or how I put myself under pressure in a leisurely environment'.

Without letting go of a fascination with Beatlesesque melodies, Gonzalez writes songs which hark back to mid 70's singer-songwriters such as Todd Rundgren and Emmitt Rhodes, but with added elements of soul, funk and electronic music - drawing upon influences like Sly And The Family Stone and Donny Hathaway, as well as. White Noise, Yellow Magic Orchestra and Mort Garson. Although Gonzalez made a conscious retreat from punk music, he maintains his work is still defined as angry music, anger is still an energy. All the lyrics are rooted in my disgust with a lot of the modern world, and feeling powerless as a young person in our society'.

Came Down a Storm is an album that creates a world. Through Claire Cronin's deep, intimate voice come songs of wreckage and redemption. A published poet and English Ph.D. student as well as a musician, Cronin uses images and symbols to craft songs that reach beyond the personal. She sings of death in a field, death at sea, dreams of dying, and a vision of a future where death is no longer allowed. Yet the music is not depressing; even in its darkest lines, these songs aim to float. The album is a collaboration between Cronin and Deerhoof guitarist John Dieterich, who met by chance at a Los Angeles show and began writing songs together long-distance. After sending recordings and ideas back and forth over email for a year, Cronin joined Dieterich at his house in Albuquerque, New Mexico, to record Came Down a Storm. It was mixed with Jay Pellici at New, Improved Recordings in Oakland, California, where the full instrumentation was put in place. The album features Pellici and Chris Vatalaro on drums and Ezra Buchla and Heather Trost on strings. The spare, melancholy style of Cronin's previous self-released work is evident in this album, but the music created with Dieterich takes Came Down a Storm beyond the folk genre. Cronin's voice recalls Karen Dalton or Jason Molina in its sincerity and ache—plaintive and burnished with a kind of dark gold throughout. The instruments build around her singing: breaking to crescendos, driving emotional currents, or providing lively counterpoint to the lyric's funereal themes.Cronin will tour this Summer and Fall with Buchla, performing pared-down arrangements of these songs and others.

Fabrica Records announces the first volume in the Same Animal, Different Cages series by American composer and improviser David First.
On Études for Acoustic Guitar, First twists and bends notes from his steel-string acoustic guitar, an instrument traditionally associated with American folk, country and blues music. And in fact, those genres are central to First's explorations here, constituting portions of a palette that also encompasses jazz and Indian classical music. In this series of stylistic hybrids, an expansive tonality is propelled with rhythmic authority. The effect is similar to that of tape manipulation, or to the challenges posed to the inner ear by Phil Niblock's shifting dissonances. It's almost as if the room itself speeds up and slows down as First performs in it, anchoring himself in three humble dimensions and letting time do what it will. The Same Animal, Different Cages series serves as the latest chapter in the oeuvre of a musician whose defining quality is arguably his curiosity. First asks the right questions, and there are no wrong answers. Subsequent volumes in the series will include similar explorations on analog modular synthesizer, harmonica, sitar, computer, voice and electric guitar.

After bursting to the American heavy rock forefront with their 2014 debut album, Sateen, Cincinnati four-piece Electric Citizen are ready for a Higher Time. Their second album for RidingEasy, it is a breakout moment for the band as a whole and for vocalist Laura Dolan, who stands tall in the spotlight throughout 'Evil,' 'Misery Keeper' and the rest of Higher Time, rising to the occasion of a fuller, bigger sound and meeting the memorable riffing of husband/guitarist Ross Dolan head on with already-stuck-in-your-head hooks and a fiery, passionate delivery.

Like its predecessor, Higher Time was recorded at The Diamonds studio in Cincinnati by Brian Olive (The Greenhornes, Dan Auerbach, Dr. John, etc.), and in search of an even more expansive feel, Laura, Ross and Brian traveled to mix the album alongside Black Keys engineer Collin Dupuis at Easy Eye in Nashville, TN. The results speak for themselves. In Laura's performance and in the multi-faceted approach of Ross alongside bassist Randy Proctor and drummer Nate Wagner, Electric Citizen branch out with stage-born assurance across a collection of definitive rock 'n' roll. It is a bold, complete sound that sacrifices nothing of the band's on-stage energy and clearly demonstrates that while their progression has been quick, it's been hard won the traditional way: They worked their collective ass off.

'We chose producer Brian Olive because he's an excellent musician with a great ear for rock 'n' roll, and a good friend that we trust,' notes Laura. The dividends of that trust can be heard in 'Ghost of Me,' the rolling 'Natural Law' or 'Devils in the Passing Time,' as Electric Citizen brazenly refuse to be pigeonholed and craft a style that, like every stage they step onto, is completely their own.

Electric Citizen spread their name far and wide on tours with Fu Manchu, Wolfmother, Budos Band and Pentagram for Sateen. Look for them to support Higher Time on the road in North America and Europe throughout 2016 and beyond.

Honey's Wharf Cat release brings to mind the Cleveland highs of The Mirrors, Friction, Death of Samantha & onward. Something about the Brooklyn trio reminds us of a Lake Erie fish fry, with a rhythm section bearing down on the twinned howls that makes it possible to catch wiffs of the Dead Boys at their sharpest. "The tunes hit your head like a fox terrier shot from a bazooka. This is a great, hard-edged slice of rock noise that blazes with a light far more forthright than I'd dared expect." - Byron Coley.

The collection of covers from the American songbook is as much a salute to the singers & songwriters of past generations as it is a reminder that our travails in matters of the heart are nothing new. After being a member of the much beloved Athens, Georgia-based B-52's for nearly 40 years, Kate Pierson has stepped out as a solo artist. While she was on tour to promote her solo debut, Guitars and Microphones, Kate stopped by Third Man Studios in Nashville, Tennessee to work with Jack White and the result was even more fun than we expected. The A-side features Kate covering the Shocking Blue track ''Venus'' with Third Man regulars Patrick Keeler on drums and Olivia Jean on electric guitar. Jack even pulls double duty playing bass and producing. On the B-side, Kate sings brand new track, ''Radio in Bed'', with members of Jack White's own band backing Kate including Fats Kaplin, Dominic Davis and Daru Jones.

Mick Barr unleashes two technically masterful and dynamic tracks that straddle the progressive metal and free jazz genres. Both feature only Barr's maniacally fast guitar shredding and screamed vocals. This 7' is truly thrilling and sure to satisfy any fan of Mick Barr's solo output, his work with bands like Ocrilim,Octis, and Orthrelm, or any of his numerous collaborative efforts.

It's been ten years since Pajaro Sunrise's first release

Pajaro Sunrise is Yuri Mendez. Yuri Mendez is a prolific guy. Over the past ten years he's produced albums for other artists, translated a book from English to Spanish (Perfecting Sound Forever, by Greg Milner, the first edition of which sold out pretty quickly, while the second one is well on its way to do exactly the same), made music for large advertising campaigns (Vodafone, for example), soundtracked the poems of actor, comedian and poet Hovik Keuchkerian, and, most of all, wrote and recorded a large amount of songs, many of which featured on his four albums.

And yet, Oh My is his first album since Kulturkatzenjammer, which came out in the autumn of 2013. The release coincides with the tenth anniversary of Pajaro Sunrise's first album, and, as its subtitle explains, features a collection of songs that have not been released officially until now - twenty-two tracks that have been on the shelves for some time, but are now saved from oblivion.

Quite a few of those tunes are new, recorded by Yuri because, well, writing, playing and recording music is simply a basic need to the man. Others have different origins: "A Different Scene" is a song written for a beautiful animation made in 2012 for a UNICEF fundraising campaign, "Reel Of The World" was a bonus track on the Japanese edition of the first Pajaro Sunrise album, some titles are alternate takes on previously released songs featured on previous albums, and there's a handful of cover versions - tunes that have been important to him over the years, enough so that he decided to make them his: Bruce Springsteen's "I'm On Fire", "Earth Angel" by The Penguins, The Beatles' "Girl", "Swingin' Party" by The Replacements, Johnny Cash's "Guess Things Happen That Way", Bill Withers' "Just The Two Of Us", and "All Ears" by The Whitest Boy Alive.

Riding high on the immense success of Permanent Vacation and its three hit singles; Dude (Looks Like a Lady), Angel and Rag Doll, their November 16th appearance at the Hampton Civic Center, VA, showed the rock world that more than merely re-inventing themselves, Aerosmith had actually found themselves again. This performance would capture the band at their peak. Steven Tyler looked and sounded energised and acutely focused, dipping into the incredibly rich repertoire that had been founded in 1973 with their self-titled album for Columbia. With that kind of back catalog, it's no real surprise that they chose only two songs from their latest album in Rag Doll and Dude (Looks Like A Lady), their latest smash hit single.
The remainder of the set presents a variety of album tracks and singles that span their career up to that point including a hark back to their debut album with Dream On. Aerosmith's overall contribution to music is of course, undeniably outstanding, but it is also the quality of their early work and their continued enthusiasm that compels audiences and listeners the world over.

This release sees all the recorded tracks by 1980s post-punk Scots The Fire Engines compiled on one album for the first time.  The band were only together for 18 months, but have cast a long and influential shadow ever since. 

La Maison story is essentially an oral one, like for many bands in those years. Casual encounters, records found and exchanged, demos recorded at home, live club shows in a country that in those years was changing socially and culturally at the speed of light, and was molding itself at the rate of a fluid modernity. The tracks of this album, all recorded between 1980 and 1984, tell the story of a world where synthesizers and drum machines coexist and replace traditional rock instruments. Where homemade overdubs broaden the spectrum of sonic possibilities and the "cut and paste" of tapes is done, literally, by hand. A world in which the first infatuations for wave and industrial are contaminated with no prejudice by the rhythms and sounds of funk and disco. A milestone for those who want to understand the vibrant landscape of Italian music of the eighties, many times too hectic and elusive to be captured in real time. Twenty one tracks on CD and twelve on vinyl, most of them never published before, see the light of day more than thirty years after their creation.

In 2015 the Membranes released their first album for 26 years - the critically acclaimed Dark Matter/Dark Energy double album.

The album received great reviews all over the world and lots of radio play on 6music.

An ambitious album it was sparked by a  meeting between John Robb and the head of the CERN project which inspired the songs about the universe, life and death with the death of Robb's father feeding into the songs. 

Many fellow musicians and authors also called it their album of the year from author Ian Rankin  to Mark Lanegan to the Manic Stret preachers so the Membranes decided on another ambitious project - to remix the whole of the album with special guests...the result is Inner Space/Out Space - a reenvisioning of a whole album.

The Membranes are currently touring the world and also playing special shows with a choir at festivals and in Europe.

Formed in London in 1977 by Mark Perry and Alex Fergusson, then editors of the punk fanzine Sniffin' Glue, Alternative TV was a post-punk group known for incorporating reggae rhythms and pushing the boundaries of the definition of punk towards the experimental and avant-garde. Their first album, The Image Has Cracked, came out originally in 1978 and is a wholly unique piece of British post-punk. Beloved by John Peel, and close confidantes of Throbbing Gristle, Alternative TV is one of the most original and beguiling groups of the era. This classic is reissued on 180 gram with 2 bonus tracks and a double-sided insert.

This mountain drama was the first team effort of school day friends Wolfgang Ambros, Manfred Tauchen und Joesi Prokopetz. (the authors call it - Rustical', derived from 'rustic' and 'musical') It describes the misery of being called by the always tempting evil mountain Watzmann, and the men, who feel the need to prove themselves and impress, and who often lose their lives by doing so. Not to mention the sensual woman - Gailtalerin', who takes advantage of her powers above men to lure them on to destruction.

The play was written in 1972 by Manfred Tauchen as a drama-parody of alpine farmers. W. Ambros delivers the music alongside song lyrics by J. Prokopetz.

With over 250.000 sold units this German concept album is one of the most successful albums of Austria ever.
