Few musicians can captivate with just their voice and guitar, but Keb' Mo' pulls it off on his fifth release The Door. It's as if DNA from Robert Johnson and James Taylor fused inside this singer-songwriter, simply known as Kevin Moore when he played guitar with Papa John Creach back in the '70s.At 49 years old, Keb' Mo' has paid his dues. More importantly, he 's a compelling singer, a versatile stringman, and a fine songwriter. He's also one of the few best-selling artists today whose music genuinely deserves a big audience.Keb'Mo' has a knack for advancing the pure Blues formula into uncharted territories. Take his remake of the Elmore James' classic It Hurts Me Too.' It's nearly impossible to make a synthesizer work in a Blues context, but Keb' Mo' finds a way on this track. On gentle numbers like Anyway' and sophisticated compositions such as the jazzy It's All Coming Back,' Keb' Mo' also extends himself well beyond the Blues.

Originating in Hatfield, UK in 1967, Octopus released their lone LP, Restless Night, in 1971 on the Penny Farthing label, produced by Tony Murray of The Troggs. Bridging the gap between 60s psychedelia and a harder edged 70s sound, Octopus drew on the obvious touchstones of the time, Lennon/McCartney, Argent/Blunstone, and the brothers Davies and Gibb, but they have the songwriting and playing chops to make this album much more than an also-ran. With hooks galore, swirling organ, and fuzztone guitars, Restless Nights is a prime piece of early 70s UK psychedelia that's rare as hen's teeth in its original form. Fortunately for you, the listener, it's now back in print on LP! Limited to 500 copies on 180 gram vinyl.

Originally released in 1967, this sought after obscurity of British psychedelic pop is a delightful confection of high harmonies and a Beatles-via-California melodic sensibility. Twee in the best way possible, The Picadilly Line is essentially the duo of Rod Edwards and Roger Hand (who would go on to greater notoriety as Edwards Hand, releasing two albums produced by George Martin), with help from the cream of the UK's session musician crop and some expert horn and string arrangers. With whimsical slice of life lyrics and a true ear for melody, The Huge World of Emily Small is a classic piece of UK pop-psych available again on LP for the first time in a decade. Limited to 500 copies on 180 gram LP.

Formed in 1981 in Sunderland, also home to the more famous Red Alert (with whom they shared plenty of members and gigs), Red London were the left-wing skinhead band that most of all mixed socialist ideas with the working class mentality. Anthemic OI! with nods to early protest folk and the new wave atmospheres that were so popular among their contemporaries. A masterpiece of political punk rock which needed to be rediscovered.

This is a compilation of the Japanese Garage 'Now' Sound! The bands featured within are playing underground with a pure, unadulterated sound today. Formed in 1974 in Houston, Stud featured the killer lead guitar of 17-year-old genius Tim Williams, the brutal Rickenbacker bass attacks of Paul Eakin and the solid as a rock drumming of George Lasher. The chemistry was born since they first starting played together and after many rehearsals, they decided they were ready to record their first album. So they entered the Barons Studios in Rosenberg and 'Stud' was the result. Powerful hard-rock on songs like 'A woman like you' or 'Jim/Blues', killer boogie-rock ('Captain Boogie'), hard-psychedelic jams (the 12+ minutes of 'Stud') and progressive hard-rock on the impressive 'The war song'.

Here we go for a beautiful split album by two Montreal / Canada based acts with a close connection as it seems and a common love for psychedelic sounds and space rock despite their different turns on the same thing. It is no miracle that you find UUBBUURRUU front man Joey Napoleon being in both acts. While UUBBUURRUU have chosen a rather laid back and melodic pop psyche route just with slightly more edgy guitars he kicks off into a fuzzed out acid punk inferno with EL NAPOLEON. Dark and gloomy garage beat with dirty riffs and even dirtier and simmering hot melodies is the lowest common dominator here and be sure it is you as the listener who gets dominated. This will certainly appeal to all those who still live in the yesteryear some 46 years ago when beat became rock and songs became twisted, uncontrollable freak outs due to hordes of proto punks going nuts on topics like the ongoing Vietnam War or sexual liberation. UUBBUURRUU may have the more freaked out name though. Their music consists of straight compositions with very striking melodies that may sound familiar to one somehow but really do their work to drag the listener onto a colorful trip. EL NAPOLEON on the other hand work with the same kind of firing harmonies and vocal lines but give them an extra buzz with their guitar eruptions that go further than your average sixties garage rock (which I love) and reach spheres of rage only MC 5 or THE STOOGES would have dared to touch. Eastern flavored guitar leads enhance the psychedelic mood to its maximum. All this is certainly very well played but it might not appeal to fans of clean digital sounds as the earthy and often dirty production is the icing on the cake and makes both acts come as vibrant as music can and should be. I would not mind making love to a sweet soul sister while cranking up this gem so it is really that hot and groovy. Fans of BABY WOODROSE, SPIDS NÖGENHAT, early MONSTER MAGNET and oldies like THE SEEDS, THE THIRD BARDO and tons of English pop psyche acts like TOMORROW or APPLE will enjoy this split album. Cheers to Canada, well done, boyzzz!!!!!

Following the collapse of the original Magic Band in early 1974, Captain Beefheart swiftly assembled an all-new line-up to promote his controversial Unconditionally Guaranteed LP. Comprising Fuzzy Fuscaldo and Dean Smith (guitar), Del Simmons (sax, flute), Michael Smotherman (keyboards), Paul Uhrig (bass) and Ty Grimes (drums), they played in a markedly more straightforward style, in keeping with his stated ambition to 'hug the world'. This fine gig, live from the Cowtown Ballroom, Kansas City, MI was taped for broadcast on KUDL-FM radio on 22nd April 1974, and is presented here together with contemporaneous notes and photos.

Lou Reed's latest collection, Rock and Roll Heart wasn't a showcase for the usual diverse aspects of Lou Reed's musical outpouring, moreover, it was a shower of bullets, shot at any given interested targets. Unfortunately for Reed, most of the shots missed, but we can be certain that the gun was loaded, what with, is up for countless debate. His Boston show from October 1976 at the Orpheum Theater drew the usual suspects with a snapshot of young punks and nearly crossed the line at missing out a performance of Heroin which when played, differed remarkably from the more familiar versions rolled out on stage since the early days with Nico et al and Transformer. WBCN-FM's presence warranted expectation that maybe Reed didn't necessarily want or respect, but Reed's vision is rarely blurred. The familiar resolute figure took the stage with the singular demeanour he was authorised to parade, but with the quiet seduction and subdued authority that always set him apart.

In 1986 Pat Metheny released Song X, an uncompromising free jazz collaboration with Ornette Coleman. Thereafter he signed with Geffen Records and recorded the considerably more accessible Still Life (Talking), which won the Grammy Award for Best Jazz Fusion Performance.

This superb set was broadcast on WXRT FM, and features several cuts from that LP, as well as a handful of other classics, and is presented here together with background notes and images.

Todd Rundgren's pedigree had always been enforced by his playing ability, but in retrospect, his legacy also has a psychedelic foundation built with The Nazz whose own reputation was formed with Open My Eyes when it appeared on Lenny Kaye's celebrated Nuggets series in 1972.
1977 saw the release of Oops! Wrong Planet with his band Utopia, in some ways, a return to the form he found with Nazz back in 1968. Utopia's appearance at Brown University in Providence offers a departure from their more extravagant performances earlier in the year where strobes and lasers were applied to accompany the progressive fanfare for the Ra shows. Brown University witnessed a shift in his musical approach opening with Trapped. The familiar orchestral introduction misleads the audience and soon buckles under the weight of a riffing assault laid on by Rundgren's terrifying and shredded Gibson attack.

STUDIO is Benny's 5th studio album. Not just casually called by its name. No, there is something else happening here. The word 'STUDIO' originates from the Latin word 'studium', which stands for 'studying'. The studio is the place where painters, artists and musicians learn, study and create. It's the place where Benny is most comfortable. Benny's Amsterdam based studio has an amazing view of the canals. STUDIO is an ode to this place, which he built 4 years ago, and everything it has brought him. Because it brought him more than just the music he produced there. It gave him his place in the world and with it so many other things. All of which is to be heard on his new album. You find him exposing true love, follow his search for a home, he opens up about settling down and he speaks of breaking through old patterns in which he found himself being stuck for years. Thanks to the co-operation with the young BEA1991 Benny is introduced to instruments that are new to him, after which he found himself coming out of the warm analogue world of the 70's and 80's and go straight into the icy digital world of the 90's. And with that the album STUDIO is born. The result is interesting. The record is not at all icy. The warm sound of Benny, which we have come accustomed to, is yet again prominent on this album. STUDIO is an album, full of color, beats and melancholy, but with songs that go much deeper than we are used to from Benny. It's remarkable that he has worked with far more people on this album than he did on previous records. Mayer Hawthorne (America's number 1 blue eyed soul singer) sings on one of his tracks, we hear Rick Rubin's protegee GoldLink rapping and we find Stone Throw's golden boys The Stepkids in a surprising role of mixing the album. Even though Benny has been crossing borders with his work for years, he only seems to really get the full effect of it just now. 'Suite for a Young Girl' is a mini-album by CTM (Cæcilie Trier Musik) by the critcally-acclaimed cellist, singer and songwriter Cæcilie Trier. Two years ago she released her debut EP Variatons (sold-out), this is the follow-up.
CTM is Cæcilie Trier's main musical project, but she is also a member of Marching Church (Sacred Bones) alongside Iceage frontman Elias Bender Rønnenfelt and has for years played live with Choir of Young Believers (Ghostly Internatonal). Before that she was signed to Bella Union with her now disbanded Chimes & Bells.

Duke of York is their second release following on from the highly acclaimed 'it-ness' in 1999. Musical convicts and actual convicts from across the Commonwealth, The Edge Of Daybreak's membership wrote and recorded Eyes Of Love while serving out sentences of six to sixty years. Set to tape inside Powhatan Correctional Center on the outskirts of Richmond, Virginia, these intimate 1979 sessions unlock the prison gates and peer into a collective consciousness concocted by a core of four confined artists. Assembled from distant love ballads and fanciful odes to freedom, Eyes Of Love is a prison letter composed by committee, recorded hastily, and circulated regionally amongst adventurous clientele willing to take a chance on these felonious talents.
