On January 17th, 2009, Elbow played a very special show to an invited audience at the world-famous Abbey Road Studios. Alongside the BBC Concert Orchestra, the band created an orchestral version of ‘The Seldom Seen Kid’, the album that had won them the Mercury Music Prize of 2008, made them household names and has now sold over 1 million copies in the UK. The show marked the start of a landmark year for the band. A week later they were named Best British Band at the BRITS, whilst ‘One Day Like This’ and ‘Grounds For Divorce’ from the album went on to win Ivor Novello Awards for ‘Best Contemporary Song and ‘Best Song Musically and Lyrically’ respectively. With the previous vinyl version of the album available only as part of the sold-out box set in 2012, Elbow will celebrate the tenth anniversary of the performance with the release of a special edition as part of the ‘Mastered at Abbey Road’ series on April 19th. This version of the recording has been remastered from the digital source and cut to vinyl at half speed to ensure the best possible audio quality.

The electric eels were the first punk band, full stop. They may not have “started” the genre, but they were the first to tick all the boxes. The eels rejected every 1970s rock convention—professionalism, virtuosity, subject matter, image. Dave E.’s caustic vocals, complete with an aggressive lisp and a head full of snot, would become de rigeur a few years after the group disbanded. Meanwhile, the songs’ focus on car crashes, suicide, neuroses, and generally hating people were as far out of the mainstream as possible. The two eels tracks that do approach the subject of romance couch it in terms of not really caring that much about it (“Jaguar Ride”) or placing it in the context of a grisly murder (“Silver Daggers”). Also consider John Morton’s signature guitar sound, a nails-on-chalkboard tone with brutally free soloing inspired more by Albert Ayler than the blues or aspirations to technical facility. Ditto Dave E.’s clarinet playing and affection for lawnmowers and vacuums during live performance. They were notoriously violent not only among themselves, but towards audiences, police, and anyone unfortunate enough to be around them when things went south. Then of course there are the leather jackets, the clothing festooned with rat traps or safety pins. And no bass player, why bother. There is simply no other “proto” band to have had all these pieces in place circa 1973- 1975. Yet it is a mistake to consider the eels exclusively in such a context. Yes, the eels could and did shock anyone who encountered them, but they also had great songs. While both Dave and John were visionary writers, they also had rhythm guitarist Brian McMahon, a melody and riff machine who wrote many of the band’s signature songs. And they were no one-trick pony. Although much of the band’s material is appropriately high-energy, there is also the downer eels—morbid, harmonically risky, and in full existential crisis. Although it’s not a focus of this compilation, the eels also had a penchant for completely free improvisation. Over the last forty plus years, there have been several electric eels compilations. Spin Age Blasters is quite simply the best one ever assembled, every single key track is here in its best version, properly mastered by John Golden, and sequenced with an eye towards both flow between tracks as well as individation between sides. A true monster of an album.
‘Dyp Tid’, the fifth album from Norwegian psych-rock group Electric Eye, is a contemplation of the unknown and the ineffable. Crafted in a landscape where time and space collapse, the record is Electric Eye's most ambitious and experimental project to date. Originally commissioned by Sildajazz – the Haugesund International Jazz Festival – and premiering there in 2022, ‘Dyp Tid’ (Norwegian for ‘Deep Time’) is both a meditative journey and an exploration of what it means to exist in a universe where time stretches far beyond humanity’s grasp. First performed live in Skåre Kirke, an octagonal wooden church in Haugesund, Norway that was built in 1858, these six atmospheric compositions centre church organs, synths and choral vocals over any traditional ‘rock’ instrumentation. Gradually winding through ambient minimalism, kosmische improvisations and experimental psych-jazz, ‘Dyp Tid’ isn’t just an album but a space; a mental landscape where sound and time intersect. Talking about the album, Electric Eye’s Øystein Braut says: “We have always been drawn to the cinematic, to the sense that something feels larger than life, and in Dyp Tid we wove these elements together into something both deeply personal and utterly elusive.” Setting up in Bergen´s Duper Studio, the recording space became a laboratory to further develop these new ideas and transform the ‘Dyp Tid’ piece into a fully-fledged studio album: “We delved into analogue technology, explored vintage machines, and experimented with what lay at the edge of our control. We sought the sound of time’s depths, something that felt infinite and uncontrollable. In an age where everything seems algorithmic and predictable, we aimed to create something that refused to be boxed in – something that lives and breathes by its own rules. The album intricately weaves together live recordings from the wooden church and studio sessions, often oscillating between the two in the course of a single track.”

American garage rock band The Electric Prunes released their second studio album Underground in 1967. The band wrote many of the songs for this psychedelic garage rock album, which would be the last one featuring the original band members. The guitar interplay between Jim Lowe, Ken Williams and James “Weasel” Spagnola is as strong as on their first album. It extends the variety of psych-pop heard on their debut, while honing a tighter and heavier sound. In 2011, it was included in NME’s “The 100 Greatest Albums You’ve Never Heard” list. We can’t argue on that as this is definitely one of the better acid/punk/psych albums from the 60’s.

Als die COVID-Pandemie im Jahr 2020 um sich griff und die Bewegungsfreiheit auf die unmittelbare Umgebung beschränkt wurde, fragte sich die legendäre britische Doom-Band, ob sie jemals wieder live spielen würde. Draußen in der Wildnis des englischen Westcountry, wo Sänger/Gitarrist Jus Oborn und Gitarristin Liz Buckingham leben, zog sich die Band
in ihren kryptischen Jam-Raum zurück, um ein Live-Album wie kein anderes zu machen. Ohne Publikum und Online-Präsenz nahmen sie sich selbst mit einer 16-Spur-Kassettenmaschine auf, um ihre Essenz, ihre Bösartigkeit, ihre Heftigkeit einzufangen.
„Zu diesem Zeitpunkt hatten wir bereits zwei Jahre lang Gigs gespielt, dreimal in Amerika, in Japan und Australien, und am Ende klangen wir schon ziemlich gut“, sagt Jus. „Als die Pandemie ausbrach, dachten wir: 'Scheiß drauf, vielleicht werden wir nie wieder spielen.' On Underwater, Elephant Gym's latest release and second full-length,
there was no single composer overseeing the record - To the end of
unlocking new sounds for themselves, each member took turns leading
production and compositional roles during the creation of the album
The result is an expansive cohesion of diverse songs which flow in and out of one
another like water. Vocal cameos by international collaborators provide another
compelling dimension to the record, emboldening a group usually known for their
instrumental compositions.
The band explains that "Underwater is an idea about a kind of private, mysterious
space." It's a place where one may go to ponder or concentrate, to clear one's
head, or to just blow off some steam in solitude. So, too, is Underwater
fundamentally about immersion: immersion in the chaos of feeling, living in the
throes of being human-sized in the infinite expanse of existence.

Artificial Countrysides is Athens, Ga - based Elf Power's 14th album and

The band expand their sound on this record to glorious effect, adding marimba,
harpsichord, synth bass, distorted drum machine loops, and mellotron to their
time tested mix of fuzz guitars, moog keyboards, pummeling drums, and layered
acoustic guitars, achieving a satisfying and unique synthesis of traditional and
futuristic sounds. Lyrically the album mirrors this approach by discussing the
difficulties and advantages of dealing with modern life's digital and artificial
landscape, balanced with the natural world. Elf Power formed in Athens, GA in
1994 and have released 14 albums, two eps, and a handful of singles, while
touring North America, Europe, and Japan many times playing alongside acts like
R.E.M., Flaming Lips, Dinosaur Jr., Neutral Milk Hotel, Guided by Voices, Arcade
Fire and many more. Albums such as 1998's Dave Fridmann-produced "A Dream
In Sound" and 2008's collaboration with the late folk rock icon Vic Chesnutt, "Dark
Developments", have cemented the bands' reputation as the finest purveyors of
modern melodic psychedelic folk rock around. The band became known as a
member of the much heralded Elephant 6 Collective, which includes their friends
