Leaving behind the realms of mythology and fantasy writing as lyrical inspiration, on Lightless Loviatar turn to something altogether more terrifying as they channel the realities of life - what it means, how it envelops us, how we leave it behind. With a solipsistic worldview that poses many disturbing questions- Lightless is a claustrophobic and philosophical sonic voyage inspired in part by Germinal (Emile Zola) and The Conspiracy Against the Human Race: A Contrivance of Horror (Thomas Ligotti). How do you fill up the hole inside you? That claustrophobic feeling is present in the music as well as the lyrics. The band has also embraced the idea of being a doom band, settling into the moniker. Writing took on a glacial pace as the band mutated and explored, ultimately distilling their sound into what we have before us on Lightless. With a heavy dose of post-metal and some gothic touches for good measure, Loviatar have created a sound that is distinctively theirs. Which is to say: you’re going to need some time with it. 3. Some show, some grow. Low Life have done both. This one is a grower. Spend some time with this one. It’s got that nuanced flavour. Iggy Pop’s Bowie produced studio rock masterpieces ‘The Idiot’ and ‘Lust For Life’ are important reference points to the 3rd album sounds of Low Life. Here comes success! 7. ‘The Agony and Ecstasy’ is a 1985 novel by Irving Stone about the life of Italian Renaissance painter Michelangelo. Stone wrote another novel about the single eared painter Vincent Van Gogh called ‘Lust For Life’. This synchronicity hit me. 8. Iggy and the Stooges are a pretty safe reference for Low Life (and all good rock music). Iggy and the Stooges are a low life’s Michelangelo, but solo Iggy like Lust for Life is a better reference for this particular incarnation of Low Life, which is to say they are studio rock albums. 9. Bowie later referred to this period of his life as profoundly nihilistic. But Iggy looked at it as the period of his life that saved him from an early grave. This confrontation is Low life lore. 10. Let’s stick to this, because there’s something about this era of Bowie that makes sense with Low Life’s new album, particularly Low. One should never miss the Low in our new album from Low Life. Producer and studio boss Mickey Grossman has the ear for the Low, and he has carved out a little statue of David right here. 11. Mickey’s ears are recording, mixing and producing the best of Sydney, most notably the Oily Boys Cro Memory Grin. A great companion record to this one. Use Agony & XTC AFTER Oily Boys. Not on an empty stomach, and don’t try to operate heavy machinery (bobcat, bulldozer etc). 12. The relationship between Low Life and Sydney hardcore should not be understated, but it also shouldn’t guide how to listen to Agony & XTC. This is not austere, disciplined music. 13. Think, like, if Poison Idea were given the kind of studio time and budget as Happy Mondays. You wouldn’t play it to a teenager. It’s not for children. This is a mature flavour, one for the adults who have had to contend with failure and hardship, medical bills and disappointed family members, betrayed lovers and worrisome growths, police brutality and tooth decay, humiliating bowels and collapsed septums, detoxing and drying out, for those who have seen themselves as corrupted and putrid and unloveable, for those who endure all of this and aren’t willing to lie down and cop it sweet: Low Life are still here and they ain’t going nowhere. NOTES ON HOW NOT TO LISTEN TO AGONY AND XTC OF LOW LIFE: 1. Don’t think of shoe-gaze. It suggests a safe passage to 90’s reminiscences, a vogue style of our time, but nothing to do with Low Life style. Low Life style is always of its time. The content changes. Agony & XTC shares weight of records like My Bloody Valentine’s Loveless and Slowdive’s Kebab, records that were laboured on after the songs were recorded, songs that were written as they were recorded. 2. We can call these “studio albums” as opposed to albums built in the heat of live performance. Studio albums from the 90’s are called shoe-gaze by some journalist nerds, but we know better than to use words like this. 3. Studio albums are excessive and, at the same time, so empty. Agony & XTC, Loveless, Kebab, Rumours: excessive! And empty. This is not to suggest this is Low Lite, some throwback, soft. A band like Low Life can make an overproduced studio rock album without having to use the word shoe-gaze. So, don’t think studio albums mean anything especially 90’s. Don’t look back. 4. Let’s lose these distasteful labels, like “shoe-gaze”, “rehab rock”, “stab”, “guitar OD overdrive”, “western Sydney wonder”. They can fade out. A low life was once referred to as a vagabond. Channeling the grooves of Black Label Society, the melodies of Alter Bridge, the aggression of Pantera, and the weight of Sabbath, Lowdown deliver doom-laced chords and searing, down-tuned riffs - battle cries in musical form, their arrival wasn't just heard; it was felt.

Lower Slaughter return with the release of their second album Some Things Take Work on the 29th of March on Box Records.

The band's debut album What Big Eyes garnered high praise from the likes of The Quietus, All Music, Loud & Quiet and Flush The Fashion as well as finding fans in BBC Radio 6 presenter Shaun Keaveny and BBC Radio 1's Huw Stephens. The latter inviting the band into Maida Vale studios to record a four track live session broadcast on BBC Radio 1.

With vocalist Sinead Young moving home to her native Glasgow with other members remaining in Brighton Lower Slaughter had to find a more considered approach to writing their second album. Bass player Barney Wakefield explains:

“What Big Eyes was a collection of our songs we’d been playing live for ages which we recorded super quick in the studio. The approach to song-writing has been much different for Some Things Take Work' Essentially it’s been a ‘long-distance’ relationship, with writing taking on a different, more considered form. This gave our approach more urgency and focus though and lead us to trust our instincts as a group.”

The result of this more considered approach is a ferocious album, one that is every part as exhilarating as the band's debut yet at times summons an extra weight and urgent delivery. While looking inwards exploring mental health, therapy revelations and healing Sinead Young's lyrics are every part introspective as well as profound social commentaries of the blockades and existential struggles many face.

Lower Slaughter yield a profound energy which so few bands capture. With Some Things Take Work they deliver another essential album for challenging times.

American singer songwriter and LGBT Icon LP,
who has more than two billion streams to their
name and a devout global fan following, releases
their highly anticipated sixth album, ‘Churches’, via
PIAS Recordings.
 A 15-song track listing of lush, captivating
creativity, described by LP as such: “This album

one of the most trying times in human history and
a fairly trying time in my own personal history. So
many real stories and realizations that I feel like I
was able to share here.”

It would be difficult to find a band that is more self-aware than longtime touring band Lucero. Since forming in Memphis in the late 90's, Lucero’s base musical hallmarks have remained similar to the band’s initial sound established with their first record The Attic Tapes. In the history of their expansive discography, Lucero has evolved and embraced everything from southern rock to Stax-inspired Memphis soul, whilst simultaneously maintaining their distinctive sonic foundations. Years later, dedicated fans of the group still flock to hear the band's punchy driving rhythms, punk-rooted guitar licks, and Iyrics that evoke the whiskey drenched sentimentality of Americana singer-songwriters. For their twelfth record, Should've Learned by Now, Lucero drew on a lot of work from their past. Literally. By adapting songs and guitar parts that had been left over from the group’s previous two albums, Lucero was able to construct one of its most comprehensive works to date. “I had a particular sound | was looking for on each record and there was no room for any goofy tock & roll or cute witticisms or even simply upbeat songs.” Said primary lyricist and frontman, Ben Nichols. “But now finally, it was time to revisit all of that stuff and get it out in the world, That's how we got to the appropriately for-us titled album Should've Learned by Now. The album is basically about how we know we are fuckups and I guess we are ok with that.” Produced by Grammy Award-winning engineer, Matt Ross-Spang, the album is a punchy, rock and roll record that utilizes the more mature production stylings the group developed over time, and combines it with the first-person introspectiveness that the band is known and loved for. From its original Ben Nichols-designed cover art to its credits, the album is a reflection of a band that knows itself, Should've Learned by Now bridges the gap musically between “old Lucero” and “new Lucero” in a manner which affixes the band’s position as the perfect intersection of punk initiative with hard-earned artistry. Im Laufe ihrer umfangreichen Diskografie hat sich Lucero weiterentwickelt und alles von Southern Rock bis hin zu Stax-inspiriertem Memphis Soul aufgenommen, ohne dabei ihre unverwechselbare Klanggrundlage aufzugeben. Sadonis fand in Nicke Andersson (Entombed, The Hellacopters, Imperial State Electric) einen kongenialen Songwriting-Partner, sie zog nach Stockholm, Robin Tidebrink stieß als junges Gitarrentalent hinzu und die Live-Mitglieder Martin Nordin (Gitarre / Dead Lord) und Alexandr Mayr am Bass sind nun fixe Teile des neuen Line-Ups, das nun beim neuen Label Century Media Records sein neuestes Werk präsentiert.

»Lucifer II« markiert dabei keine Abkehr vom ursprünglichen Sound, sondern erweist sich schlichtweg in jeder Hinsicht als besser! Die Songs sind zwingender und treibender, variieren zwischen eingängigen Heavy Rockern wie »California Son«, stimmungsvollen Balladen (»Dreamer«) und klassischem Doom (»Faux Pharaoh«) und der Sound – aufgenommen wurde in Nickes The Honk Palace Studio, gemixt von Ola Ersfjord (Primordial, Tribulation…) – ist dynamischer, transparenter und frischer als zuvor.

The second coming of heavy rockers Lucifer! After being formed back in 2014 and releasing the much-acclaimed »Lucifer I« via Rise Above in 2015, vocalist Johanna Sadonis has teamed up with Nicke Andersson (Entombed, The Hellacopters, Imperial State Electric) to reshape Lucifer. Lucinda Williams’ music has gotten her through her darkest days. It’s been that way since growing up amid family chaos in the Deep South, as she recounts in her candid new memoir, Don’t Tell Anybody the Secrets I told You. Over the past two years, it’s been the force driving her recovery from a debilitating stroke she suffered on November 17, 2020, at age 67. Her masterful, multi-Grammy-winning songwriting has never deserted her. To wit, her stunning, sixteenth studio album, Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart, brims over with some of the best work of her career. And though Williams can no longer play her beloved guitar – a constant companion since age 12 – her distinctive vocals sound better than ever. The band rocks out on the album’s jubilant opening track, “Let’s Get the Band Back Together,” which features a gang of background singers, including Margo Price and Buddy Miller. Inspired by “that need for community after all the isolation of the pandemic,” Williams offers, the song is “about getting old friends together again who’d drifted apart.” Price also joins her on the bluesy protest, “This Is Not My Town.” The evocative “New York Comeback” also includes guest vocalists – Bruce Springsteen and Patti Scialfa. A Lucinda Williams fan, Springsteen had joined her onstage in London a few years back, and he and Scialfa had wanted to contribute to a Williams album for a while. With Reese Wynans on B3 and the Pettibone-Mathis guitar attack, the musical setting perfectly matches the theme of “Comeback,” as well as on the catchy story-song “Rock N’ Roll Heart,” to which Springsteen and Scialfa also contributed vocals. Says Williams, “Having Bruce and Patti on these songs feels really great. It’s just so cool!” As she promises on the powerful last track of Stories from a Rock n Roll Heart–one of the best albums of her career–Lucinda Williams is “never gonna fade away.”

Lu's Jukebox is a six-volume series of mostly full-band performances recorded live at Ray Kennedy's Room & Board Studio in Nashville, TN. Throughout her long career, Lucinda Williams has never shied away from writing about difficult but real things. Ihr drittes Album "Home Video" basiert auf Erinnerungen ihrer Coming-Of-Age-Jahre in Richmond, Virginia. Viele der Songs beginnen wie Memoiren und alle haben die Passion, den Humor und die Ehrlichkeit von erfrischend autobiographischen Texten. Während einer langen Zeit auf Tour hatte sich Lucy gefreut, endlich wieder Zeit in ihrer Heimatstadt verbringen zu können, nur um dort festzustellen, dass Menschen sie wie ein Zerrbild ihrer selbst betrachteten. So brach sie im August 2019 nach einem Monat der Stille kurzerhand auf, um in den Trace Horse Studios in Nashville mit ihren Freunden und Bandkollegen Jacob Blizard, Collin Pastore und Jake Finch an neuem Material zu arbeiten. Reissued for the first time on vinyl here’s the debut album of mancunian band Ludus (originally released on New Hormones in 1981). Led by famous visual artist, performer and musician Linder Sterling and guitarist Ian Devine, Ludus moved all along the lines of post-punk and art-rock with their strictly original mix.
