Cochemea - Vol. II: Baca Sewa
DAP-067LP
Daptone Records
12inch16.07.202116.JUL.21

Hip-HopFunkSoulPopJazz

The Dap-Kings' electro-sax space warrior returns with a groove-heavy sequel to All My Relations. Vol. II: Baca Sewa, an expressive, transcendental voyage through the archives of his indigenous roots and beyond. Drawing on ancestral memories and family histories to wrap new flesh around the bones of history, this album is a bold, semi-autobiographical work that leads us deeper into the annals of family histories, mythology and the cultural imaginary.

“Baca Sewa” is Cochemeaʼs original family name prior to Spanish colonization and the fracturing or erasure of ancient knowledge and ways. The melody for the title track was composed by Anthony Gastelum and features vocals and drumming by the Baca Sewa Singers- a group composed of several generations of family members. The album runs thick with sonic tributes and remembrances. “Chitoʼs Song” is a contemplative, ethereal tribute to a beloved uncle. “Curandera” conjures the memory of the irrepressible healing power of medicine women. “Black Pearl” recalls his great grandfather, heir to a legacy of indigenous peoples enslaved as pearl divers in the Sea of Cortez.

Leading a 7-piece ensemble composed of New Yorkʼs top percussionists and members of Daptoneʼs rhythm section, Cochemea recombined ancient elements of drums, winds, and voice, creating his own world of emotional textures and rhythmic possibilities. His musical and spiritual synthesis is made possible through his deep reverence of the horn and of the music and traditions preceding him. Vol II: Baca Sewa - is an offering and continuation of Cochemeaʼs explorations, part of a musical process of cultural reclamation and healing through connection, relations, memory and imagination.

Coleman Hawkins, Ben Webster - Blue Saxophones

Vinyl Passion
12inch22.03.202422.MAR.24

PopJazz

Ben Webster was considered one of the ‘big three’ of swing tenors along with Coleman Hawkins (his main influence) and Lester Young. ‘Blue Saxophones’ is a studio album recorded in 1957 by Coleman Hawkins and Ben Webster. Accompanied by a rhythm section with Herb Ellis guitar, Alvin Stoller drums and Ray Brown on double bass led by Oscar Peterson. They just blend together beautifully, and with the great Oscar Peterson on piano, the approach is always very tasteful. This encounter shows the two veterans at the peaks of their powers. Most of the album is a relaxed meeting of old friends, though. Coleman and Webster duet beautifully on the heads of “La Rosita” and “It Never Entered My Mind”. Limited Edition on Cool Blue coloured vinyl.

Colin Curtis Presents

Hip-HopFunkPopJazz

Those who keep a keen eye on the contemporary British nu-jazz scene should already have encountered producer Tom Funk's The Sultan's Swing project. He's already released a trio of fine albums under the alias, each of which combines authentic jazz, jazz-funk and acid jazz instrumentation (provided courtesy of a rotating cast of guest musicians) with nods to trip-hop, downtempo, dub, Balearica and Latin beats. The Sultan's Swing Sessions, Funk's contribution to the Colin Curtis Presents series, takes a similar approach, with predictably excellent results. Our picks of a very strong bunch are the gently spaced-out dancefloor Latin jazz of 'Lotta Arlotto', the summery jazz-fusion of 'Hitchfunkers Slide To The Galaxy' and impeccable opener 'The New Beginning'.

Coma World - Coma Wong LP

Byrd Out
12inch20.10.202320.OCT.23

PopJazz

Betamax of The Comet Is Coming and Pete Bennie of Speakers Corner Quartet are Coma World. They have come together again to produce a further batch of rhythmically enlightened Dystopian Jazz, alongside illustrious graphic and sound artist Raimund Wong (Floating World Pictures) for this record - 'Coma Wong' (out 6 October 2023 on Byrd Out). The storm clouds are gathering at sea, with the white horses dancing ever faster on the waves. Coma World chose to ride out the tempest, sail up, speeding along together towards who knows what… Expect drums precision engineered with just the right degree of insouciance, drone-bathed sounds rippling and depth charge bass that explodes beneath the surface across 12 tracks. The Wire on their first album, the self-titled ‘Coma World’: “a bold drum ‘n’ bass affair, a nervy meeting between dub and jazz experimentations with new channels explored track by track”. Tom Ravenscroft on BBC 6 Music on ‘Calamari’ from the new album: “I think this is like my favourite track right now… Love it.”

COMA WORLD - COMA WORLD
BYR028
Byrd Out
12inch17.02.202117.FEB.21

PopJazz

Coma World is a new collaboration between Maxwell Hallett, a.k.a. Betamax (The Comet Is Coming/Soccer96) and Pete Bennie (Speaker's Corner Quartet) bringing together their potent chemistry in an intoxifying debut LP. Betamax drives the duo with his signature 'rhythmadelic' drum rapture as Pete elegantly pummels bass tones into an assortment of wonky pockets. Both layer on a blanket of electronic dark matter to create a sonic womb-like world laid out for the brave listener to explore. This is dub and jazz reduced to the raw fundamentals of experimentation, trance and spontaneity. Inspired by a friend's recollections of being in a coma, the duo delve through the mysteries of consciousness and return with a striking array of colourful sound artefacts. From Cosmic flushes that wouldn't sound amiss on a record by Byrd Out collaborator the late, great Andrew Weatherall, through to drowsy groove meditations and explosive eruptions, the album plays by its own rules but demands attention. The two artists sling their dirty funk through cold clouds of darkness leaving psychedelic trails of bleeping fractal spillage. The sonic experimentation is distilled through analogue studio relics followed by a rugged 'all hands on deck' live mix down performance from 1/4" tape. The result is a spontaneous collection of sonic debris that will be administered to willing participants through 12" vinyl format.

PopJazzElectro

Combo Chimbita unleash a primal roar of catharsis on their latest album,
IRE, channeling a burning spiritual awakening blazing through the world
and in their hearts
Rapturous cumbia, ancestral drumming, free jazz, electronic distortion and
wordless chants abound throughout IRÉ; a testament to the ever expanding
scope of Combo Chimbita's sonic palette and acts of resistance in realms both
spiritual and terrestrial.
The New York City- based quartet are tracing their roots back to Colombia and
even further to the precolonial continent of Abya Yala. Often described as tropical
futurists for their ambitious melange of ancestral musical traditions and cutting
edge experimentation, the creative unity of Carolina Oliveros (vocals,
guacharaca), Niño Lento es Fuego (guitar), Prince of Queens (bass, synthesizers)
and Dilemastronauta (drums) transcends common concepts of time and
nationality. By identifying as Abya-yalistas, the ensemble takes yet another step
towards unshackling their essence from the cruelty of conquest and the stifing
oppression of land borders.

Como Asesinar a Felipes (CAF) from Santiago, Chile, displays their rhythmic existential poetry over a grounding produced by organic instruments. On the same platform elements of jazz, hip-hop, rock, classical and electronic music meet, creating a mix that has stood out for its originality, atmosphere and a lot of energy during its live performances interpreted through a signature that is uniquely their own: saturated, technicolor hues of sound painted on a dark psychedelic canvas. In 2008 their self-titled debut record was released which gained remarkable attention throughout Latin America and especially their home country Chile. Company - Trios
HJRLP214
Honest Jons Records
2x12inch30.12.201930.DEC.19

PopJazz

A typically eclectic collection of guests joined Derek Bailey for Company Week in 1983: saxophonists Evan Parker and Peter Brötzmann; cellist Ernst Reijseger, mainstay of Dutch new jazz (ICP Orchestra, Clusone Trio); American wind virtuoso J.D.Parran, veteran of the Black Artists’ Group and Anthony Davis and Anthony Braxton ensembles. The French bassist Joëlle Léandre is equally at home playing free or performing works by Cage and Scelsi, while Vinko Globokar is an acclaimed composer as well as a trombonist of monstrous virtuosity. British electronics pioneer Hugh Davies served time alongside Globokar with Karlheinz Stockhausen. Percussionist Jamie Muir was with Davies on the very first (Music Improvisation) Company outing in 1970, before a brief stint with King Crimson. Is there an ideal number of musicians for free improvisation? Bailey once described playing solo as a “second-rate activity” – though he did it spectacularly well – while at the other end of the spectrum, large improvising ensembles can descend into an unwieldy racket. Three may be a crowd for some, but for Pythagoras it was the perfect number, and trios work surprisingly well in improvised music. Sometimes one instrument takes centre stage, like Parker’s circular-breathing soprano at the beginning of Five, but knowing when to lie low, as he does in the brief austere Three, is just as crucial to the success of the whole. Muir makes sure he doesn’t get in the way of Globokar and Parran’s leisurely exchanges on Four, but the trombonist is all over the place on One, with Léandre racing up and down her bass and Davies all spikes, squeaks and squiggles. With a touch of Bailey’s dry humour, two of these seven recordings aren’t trios at all: Trio Minus One is his duo with Reijseger, running the gamut from crazed polyrhythmic strumming (imagine Reinhardt and Grappelli playing Schoenberg and Nancarrow simultaneously) to what must be the fastest cello pizzicati ever recorded. And on the closing ecstatic nonet, Brötzmann and trumpeter John Corbett prove that more cooks don’t necessarily spoil the broth but sure as hell can spice it up.

COMPRO ORO - SUBURBAN EXOTICA
SDBANULP12
SDBAN ULTRA
12inch18.10.201918.OCT.19

PopJazz

Compro Oro; a psychedelic underground road trip to Africa, the Middle East and the Americas via Belgium.

On the band's new album 'Suburban Exotica', released 18th October via Sdban Ultra, the spirit of Cal Tjader, Mulatu Astatke or Marc Ribot is never far away. One of the leading bands in the ever-expanding new wave of Belgian jazz, Compro Oro's wayward and psychedelic approach to a broad range of sounds has gained them a devoted fan base since the band's formation in 2014.

Produced by Gent-based multi-instrumentalist Dijf Sanders, 'Suburban Exotica' digs deep into several ethnic music traditions, leaving the listener enthralled in dark grooves and rabid psychedelica.

From the danceable beats and colourful sounds of 'Miami New Wave', the exotic rhythms and textures of '10 Dollar Jeans Jacket', and the curious vibraphone infusions and wild guitar riffs of 'Rastapopoulos', to the heady, bass-laden mover and shaker 'Lalibela' and traditional latin and cuban rhythms of 'Dark Crystal', Compro Oro offer wild, profound and uncanny flavours that explore the best of afro-cuban music and jazz tinged psychedelia.

'Suburban Exotica' features drummer, keyboardist and percussionist Joachim Cooder, son of guitar legend Ry Cooder who played on both the landmark Buena Vista Social Club albums and the Manuel Galban spin-off, Mambo Sinuendo. He adds percussion and his effects-laden electric mbira to three tracks on the album; 'Miami New Wave', 'Rastapopoulos' and 'Dark Crystal'. "I had a great time playing on this record. Compro Oro blends together so many interesting rhythms and styles that I never knew what was coming next. I like to work that way."

On 'Suburban Exotica', Compro Oro's Wim Segers adds, "Thanks to Bart (Vervaeck) and saxophonist Nathan Daems (Black Flower), I've discovered Arab and Turkish music. I've learned to embrace my own neighbourhood. When you live in this part of Ghent, Eastern rhythms are the beat of the street." Vervaeck chips in, "We aren't Cuban; we aren't Morocccan - we know that. We just sail from one coast to another. Finding our own place."

Corrie Dick - Sun Swells

Ubuntu Music
12inch14.10.202214.OCT.22

PopJazz

Corrie Dick, a musician and composer specialising in euphoric, sonically-inventive drumming, is at the rhythmic epicentre of a new era of innovative British jazz. He is lauded for his dynamism, his melodic slant and for his playfully subversive take on style and genre. An artist of prolific and varied output, Corrie has long been an essential component of Laura Jurd’s music including Mercury Prize shortlisted Dinosaur; is a crucial co-pilot in Elliot Galvin Trio and Rob Luft Group; and co-writes music with an abundance of artists including alternative Indie band Ink Line. His 2015 release Impossible Things which skilfully fused Celtic folk and contemporary jazz with new takes on African rhythms culminated in sold out touring and concerts across the UK. Now Corrie resets for an album which further embraces the eclectic whims of a child of the iPod shuffle generation - finding cohesion among disparate elements. Concerning the idea behind Sun Swells, his latest project, Corrie explains: “I wanted to write a jazz album that had rock instrumentation at its core: guitar-bass-drums. Rob Luft (guitar), Tom McCredie (bass) and I have been improvising and writing together for years and years and we’ve forged a sound that is uniquely crunchy yet summery, so I wanted that sound at the centre but decorated with all sorts of elements. I basically wanted to make folk-rock-jazz but treat it how electronic music producer Mura Masa treats his tracks--chucking the whole damn fruit bowl at the thing but somehow keeping space and air in the arrangement and the mix.” The music on Sun Swells is highly unique in a way that is becoming a trademark for the highly gifted artist.

‘Not For Now’ is the debut mini-album by electrifying ensemble corto.alto, led by Glasgow trombonist, producer and composer, Liam Shortall. Shortall’s ensemble combines virtuoso musicianship with fresh jazz compositions informed by a lifelong passion for hip hop.

‘Not For Now’ follows an acclaimed series of DIY self-releases and videos, released over the course of a year from May 2019. The highlights were collated on a sold-out vinyl EP on Worm Discs and received support across Radio 6 Music, BBC Radio 2 and BBC Radio Scotland. In this short but productive space of time, corto.alto were awarded for Best Band and Album at the Scottish Jazz Awards 2020, and received a personal invitation by Gilles Peterson to perform at We Out Here 2021.

Originally conceived as a self-imposed challenge for Liam to release new music every three weeks for a year, corto.alto’s incredible success has postponed any plans to end the project. As Liam puts it, “so I called this E.P “Not for Now”, in reply to “Is That It?”, the last track from “Live at 435”, featuring a hero of mine, Soweto Kinch”. Lockdown gave Liam plenty of time “to better gauge a sense of perspective of where I fit as an artist in the world of music” and find the right balance between “over intellectualised” or “over commercialised” ‘jazz’.

Shortall is able to call on musicians of the highest calibre, from Glasgow and beyond, to give life to his compositions. Among them rising saxophonist Harry Weir, pianist Fergus McCreadie and drummer Graham Costello of STRATA fame. Nubiyan Twist & Onipa co-founder, Tom Excell, not only contributes on percussion, but co-produces ‘Not For Now’ alongside Shortall, adding the midas touch that has undoubtedly contributed to Nubiyan Twist’s incredible success.

Count Basie - Basie At Birdland
PPANR152065
Strata-East
2x12inch30.06.202030.JUN.20

PopJazz

Re-mastering by Ray Staff at Air Mastering, Lyndhurst Hall, London

'Basie at Birdland' is a 1961 live album featuring Count Basie and his famed orchestra playing at Birdland in New York City. Recorded on June 27-28th of 1961, and released just one month later in July of that year, 'Basie at Birdland' proved once again that Count Basie was one of the world's best players, band leaders, and flag bearers of Jazz. Birdland, the self-proclaimed, 'Jazz Corner of the World' provides a raucous, lively backdrop to the band's soulful Kansas City style Jazz, on tunes like, 'Blue Backstage', and 'Good Time Blues' alongside their harder hitting, big band bop. 'Basie at Birdland' features the Count at the height of his prowess, and he and his band's fervent, swinging performance cannot be missed - it's perfect for novices and aficionados alike.

This is a jaw-dropping recording of Basie's band in 1961. The band is so tight and swings so hard it sounds at times as if one is listening to a Wurlitzer organ. There simply was no band that swung as hard as Basie's - at least not as recorded on this live date. Amazing.

Simply the best live recording of a big band ever!

Count Basie Orchestra - High Voltage
0211545MSW
Musik Produktion Schwarzwald
12inch08.04.202208.APR.22

PopJazz

Reissue of the Count Basie Orchestra's 1970 album 'High Voltage',
arranged by Chico O'Farrill and featuring Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis, Cecil
Payne, Joe Newman, Freddie Green and Harold Jones among others
When in January, 1970 Count Basie entered the studio with his 17-piece big band
to record 'High Voltage', he ushered in the last full decade as bandleader of his
Orchestra. The Orchestra had left its imprint on the sixties by recording with the
likes of Frank Sinatra and Ella Fitzgerald. There would be more great albums with
star vocalists in the seventies, but the band's purely instrumental works, which
had begun in 1965, would also continue. Back then Basie had engaged acclaimed
Cuban composer/arranger Chico O'Farrill to arrange the music for such concept
albums as "Basie Meets Bond" and "Basie's Beatle Bag", transforming them into
crossover gems.
On 'High Voltage' O'Farrill demonstrates his affinity to Basie's big band sound, this
time with a repertoire of standards. For this album, Basie specifically chose
pieces the band had never recorded in their more than 30-year existence. This is
saying something, since the band covers such an impressive span of jazz history,
from the beginning of the swing era to the bop-influenced bands of the 50's on
through to the present album.
The Count's new drummer Harold Jones propels Fred Fisher's "Chicago" with a
tremendous drive. The Rogers and Hart classic "Have You Met Miss Jones"
features beguilingly dense deep- register horn lines and an almost languorous
piano, and Eric Dixon's tasty flute solo spices up "The Lady Is A Tramp". With its
smoky sophistication, Eddie Lockjaw Davis' Tenor dominates "Bewitched",
whereas guest trumpeter Joe Newman's muted tongue-in-cheek solo highlights
"Day In Day Out". Of course, Basie himself also steps forward: for instance, on the
Fats Waller-like intro to "I'm Getting Sentimental Over You", and with the playful
grace notes on "If I Were A Bell"." Reminiscent of the Las Vegas shows the band
performed with Frank Sinatra, "Get Me To The Church On Time" is also a
masterful dialogue between the horn sections.

Akira Ishikawa, a drummer who led groups such as Midnight Sons, Genchers, and Count Buffaloes and has released countless works to the world. This work, the earliest recording under the name of Count Buffalo, features Ken Muraoka, Hiromasa Suzuki, Kiyoshi Sugimoto, Masahiko Sato, and others. Hip jazz-rock “Cougar” led by disquieting strings, “Greensleeves” with a hint of avant-garde, his own interpretation of “Hey Jude”, and a dry jazz-rock version of a folk song such as “Makouta”. , so dense that you don’t even have time to breathe. Penumbra, from the Latin paene (almost) and umbra
(shadow), refers to the partially luminescent fringe of an
opaque object, like the streetlight outlining the sole of a shoe
hurtling towards your eye. Hypnagogic, from the Greek
hupnos (sleep) and agōgos (leading), refers to the drowsy
state before sleep. Crazy Doberman here comprises
seventeen players from the greater Europe of the Midwest.

the rug. The owner pays them to keep away the beast of

montaged in post. Further spool’t month to month, basking

Creative Arts Ensemble - One Step Out
NS-913
Nimbus West Records

PopJazz

Nimbus West spirit jazz essential: the Creative Arts Ensemble's classic debut One Step Out. One of the most sought after and highly-regarded titles to have appeared on Tom Albach's celebrated Nimbus West imprint, One Step Out is a timeless work of spiritualized jazz. A true gem from the Los Angeles jazz underground, the album was pianist and composer Kaeef Ruzadun Ali's first recording as leader of the Creative Arts Ensemble, the only large ensemble group that emerged directly from Horace Tapscott's legendary Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra community jazz group. A Los Angeles native, Kaeef was introduced to the Tapscott circle in the late 1970s. His first experience of the Arkestra's ethos was through PAPA tenorist Michael Session, who took him to the famous "Great House" at 2412 South Western Ave., LA -- a large mansion house which members of the Arkestra had taken over as a space for communal living. Life in the Great House was a continuous stream of music, dance and community events. "When I walked in there," recalled Kaeef, "it was like this whole rush came over me, just from going in the front door -- It was like a very, very warm feeling of love. I went and I came out with 'Flashback Of Time', and that was my first arrangement." Kaeef quickly became a significant contributor of compositions to the Arkestra's songbook -- his piece "New Horizon" would be recorded by Horace Tapscott for the latter's Tapscott Sessions series. But "Flashback Of Time" would eventually appear on One Step Out, played by the new group he had put together from stalwart Arkestra members. Inspired by both Tapscott's example and by the Art Ensemble of Chicago, Kaeef had wanted to follow their lead by assembling a larger unit. Featuring seasoned Arkestra regulars including reedsman Dadisi Komolafe, drummer Woody "Sonship" Theus and altoist Gary Bias, with veterans Henry "The Skipper" Franklin on bass and George Bohannon on trombone, One Step Out is a key document of the Los Angeles radical jazz underground. Featuring the sanctified vocals of Kaeef's sister, B. J. Crowley, the album is a tour de force of spiritually energized independent jazz music.

Crumb is the collaboration of Brooklyn-based musicians Lila Ramani (guitar, vocals), Brian Aronow (synth, keys, sax), Jesse Brotter (bass), and Jonathan Gilad (drums). The friends came together in 2016 with the goal of developing and recording a collection of songs Ramani had written in high school and college, the work ultimately resulting in the band’s first two EPs, 2016’s Crumb and 2017’s Locket. Encouraged by the warm reception online and at shows, the band evolved into a full time touring and recording project.

In June 2019, Crumb will release Jinx, their first full-length album and best distillation to date of their singular blend of psych-rock and jazz. On Jinx, Ramani continues to helm the songwriting, with Aronow, Brotter, and Gilad each bringing distinctive ideas to match her ethereal, intimate vocals and luminous guitar lines. Informed by two years of nearly non-stop touring, the songs sweep and swell to capture the beguiling live spirit of Crumb shows, while taking listeners one step further down the band’s dizzying, hypnotic path.
