With Maternity Beat, Hedvig Mollestad has surpassed herself, most significantly as a composer and arranger, and delivered her magnum opus so far. And with Trondheim Jazz Orchestra she found the perfect ensemble to perform it. They have a long tradition for collaborations like this, we can mention Chick Corea, Jason Moran and Marius Neset among many others. And as always, Hedvig truly shines as a guitarist. Maternity Beat is Hedvig’s third “solo” album. It was commissioned by Molde International Jazz Festival and premiered in July 2020, later the same year streamed at London Jazz Festival. The recording took place in Athletic Sound in Halden in October 2021. Since she received the festival’s talent price in 2009 and signed to Rune Grammofon the following year, we have had the great pleasure to release seven albums by her trio as well as two solo albums, all receiving wide international acclaim in both jazz and rock camps. To complete the circle, Hedvig has been chosen as next year’s Artist in Residence at the festival, a most prestigious institution in Norwegian jazz, held by John Zorn this year and initiated by Chick Corea in 2000 and Pat Metheny in 2001. Tracklist, all formats 1. On The Horizon, Part 1 2. On The Horizon, Part 2 3. Do Re Mi Ma Ma 4. Donna Ovis Peppa 5. Little Lucid Demons/Alfons 6. All Flights Cancelled 7. Her Own Shape 8. HEDVIG MOLLESTAD TRIO - EVIL IN OSLO

PopJazz

ENG Reissued! If "Black Stabat Master" can be seen as moving into new terrains, then "Evil In Oslo" can serve as a summing up of the previous years, although there is also a clear link between the albums. While the nine live performances presented here all come from their first three studio albums, most are lenghty workouts again showing Hedvig as a very confident and accomplished solo guitarist. Recorded at Oslo clubs John Dee and Buckley's, "Evil In Oslo" is simply a kick ass live album (never thought we'd ever use that expression, but there you go), with a very high level of musicianship and a perfect balance between freedom and discipline. The hi-res recordings capture both the energy level and all the details in a marvellous way! Liner notes by Richard Williams.

Free Metal. Line-Up: Hedvig Mollestad Thomassen -Gitarre, Ellen Brekken - Bass, Ivar Loe Bjornstad - Schlagzeug

Hedvig Mollestad Thomassen - guitar/Ellen Brekken - bass/Ivar Loe Bjornstad - drums. Only nine months after her momentous debut solo album Ekhidna, the guitarist is back fronting her trio. With their previous album, Smells Funny, this explosive and expansive trio experienced a breakthrough of sorts, having gone from strength to strength through five albums since their 2011 debut Shoot!, gathering respect from both rock and jazz camps, sharing big stages with the likes of John McLaughlin and Black Sabbath, and being equally comfortable on jazz and rock stages. Hedvig enforced this breakthrough with Ekhidna, appearing on both jazz and rock best of 2020 lists, like coming in third in Prog's "Album of the Year" poll. She was included in Downbeat's "25 for the future" and received heaps of international attention and great reviews. With the hypnotic title track, the spacious ballad Four Candles and generally a more varied mood, Ding Dong. You're Dead. is the trio's most dynamic album to date. That said there's still enough solid and creative riffing here to satisfy the headbangers, as well as the jazzheads, as they further explore the free and open landscapes most notably started with their Black Stabat Mater album and continued with Smells Funny. As Nate Chinen wrote about "Black Stabat Mater" in JazzTimes: Her trio, which has Ellen Brekken on bass and Ivar Loe Bjornstad on drums, caught my ear then with its audacious style references: the loose swagger of early Black Sabbath; the density and prowl of peak Led Zeppelin; the expeditionary urge of Jimi Hendrix; the incantatory fervor of John McLaughlin. As recent performances have shown, online and in the flesh, this trio radiates confidence and have become a surefire hit on the Norwegian live scene. Hedvig first picked up her mother's acoustic guitar at ten, before discovering a whole new world through her father's jazz and rock record collection as a teenager. She was given her first electric guitar and amplifier as a confirmation present. Hedvig met Ellen and Ivar at the Music Academy in Oslo and asked them to join her after she received the Young Jazz Talent of the Year award at Molde International Jazzfestival in 2009. They have stayed together since, and all previous albums have been released on Rune Grammofon to wide international acclaim.

Helen Merrill's recording career has spanned six decades. On Lilac Wine, released in 2003, the eminent jazz singer applies her magnificent voice to a collection of songs that she had never previously recorded, with the exception of ‘Lilac Wine’ – a song she first recorded in the '50s and revisits here. As throughout her long recording career, Merrill is surrounded here by first-rank musicians such as George Mraz (bass), Torrie Zito (piano, keyboard, arrangements) and Lew Soloff (trumpet). Merrill's singularly swinging style remains as potent and vibrantly spellbinding as ever.

PopJazz

Using just piano and a Weissenborn guitar, Helge Lien and Knut Hem
sculpt a timeless sound that conjures up images of endless planes,
feelings of freedom and nostalgia
They make use of the harmonic vocabulary of jazz, and the feeling of Country and
Bluegrass while occasionally hinting at ambient and film music. Journalists have
come up with clever genre names such as "Nordicana" to try and capture this
direction. But although Hem and Lien share influences with these acts, their style
feels like a distinct own branch within this fascinating scene.
At its very core, 'Villingsberg' is music for inner wandering, a cosmos of solitude,
in which the silence behind the notes is as important as the actual sounds made.

PopJazz

'Revisited' is a hybrid of studio and concert recordings from the
acclaimed Norwegian pianist/composer Helge Lien and his trio
Miraculously, however, you can't hear the hybrid nature of the source material. All
tracks blend into a cohesive, 50- minute piece: There are no sounds from the
audience and the studio takes feel as urgent as the live performances.
After the departure of Frode Berg (after 'Guzuguzu') and Per Oddvar Johansen
(after '10'), Helge Lien had to re-think and re-assemble his trio. All the while, he
continued to record and (virtually) perform you could call it improvisation
squared.
The courage has paid off: The new formation - Johannes Eick joining on bass
alongside the returning Knut Aalefjaer on drums - arrived at interpretations which
felt like a look back and a fresh departure all at once: This is not a revolution, it's
passion under the microscope.

An Indian's Life' continues Henri Texier's lifelong interest in native American history and culture, first illustrated in his critically acclaimed album 'An Indian's Week' (1993) "It's from a childhood passion", Texier explains, "Something very intimate but not intellectualized, so much, that connects me back to the little Parisian kid I was in the 50's, of course, later I added jazz to the cocktail, I linked the Native American genocide to the oppression of the Afro- Americans, and I identified with this wretched part of America through jazz music". Once again, Henri Texier has produced a work of vibrating music in tune with the Native American psyche. All the compositions are his own (except Black and Blueby Fats Waller and Harry Brooks) and include pieces honouring his friends Carla Bley and Steve Swallow, the tutelary figure of Charles Mingus, Don Cherry, and Paul Motian. Texier never fails to state where he comes from, turning his deeply welcoming music into a space of dialogue between traditions and generations, acknowledgment of others in all their differences

Over the decades, Texier became known for blending jazz with influences from folk, African, and Middle Eastern music, giving his sound a unique global flavour. His work has earned him several prestigious awards, including multiple 'Victoires du Jazz' (France's top jazz honour) and widespread international recognition. Los Angeles bass titan Henry Franklin is bestknown for the two Skipper LPs issued by Black Jazz in 1972-74; 1977’s Tribal Dance is more obscure and arguably the best of the bunch, the spiritual jazz given an extra propulsive dimension via the excesses of Sonship, banging complex rhythms on his elaborate self-made drums, as heard on the opening title track and the extended ‘Cosmos Dwellers.’ Elsewhere, ‘Eric’s Tune’ has flamenco undercurrents, ‘Spring Song’ is a slow piano meditation, and ‘Prime

Move’ is all over the map. This sonic jazz journey engages the senses and is thoroughly excellent throughout – get your copy now!

PopJazz

Though it’s hard to pick a winner among the estimable Black Jazz catalog, this 1972 release from bassist Henry “The Skipper” Franklin would have to be near the top of the list. Franklin got his start woodshedding with Latin maverick Willie Bobo in the mid-‘60s and went on to play with The Three Sounds, but probably his most notable gig prior to this debut album was his stint in Hugh Masekela’s band (that’s Franklin playing bass with Masekela at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival). For The Skipper, Franklin assembled a crack outfit that included a horn section of trumpeter/flugelhornist Oscar Brashear (Bobby Hutcherson, Ry Cooder, Donny Hathaway) and tenor & soprano sax man Charles Owens (Buddy Rich, Horace Tapscott, John Mayall) along with a Masekela bandmate in electric pianist Bill Henderson and ace drummer Michael Carvin (Pharoah Sanders, Lonnie Liston Smith, Freddie Hubbard). This is such a unique, organic recording that it’s hard to make comparisons; definitely a little fusion, a little ‘60s Blue Note feel, and the usual Black Jazz journey to the more lyrical, pop-inspired (“Little Miss Laurie”) and funk-infused (“Plastic Creek Stomp”) sides of jazz, but perhaps the best comparison is late-‘60s Miles before he went electric. In any case, The Skipper is just a joy to listen to from start to finish, beautifully recorded by Black Jazz producer Gene Russell and blessed with some really fine writing, most of it by Franklin himself. First-time LP reissue and a must-have!

HENRY GRIMES TRIO - THE CALL (REISSUE)
ESPLP1026
ESP DISK
12inch26.03.202126.MAR.21

PopJazz

It has occasionally been assumed that Henry Grimes got this December 28, 1965 recording date as a reward for his long service in the avant-garde of jazz. Having already honed his musical conception with a varied range of players, from Benny Goodman and Arnett Cobb to Lee Morgan, Gerry Mulligan, and Sonny Rollins to McCoy Tyner, Steve Lacy, Albert Ayler (including ESP 1020, Spirits Rejoice), Don Cherry, and Cecil Taylor (to name just a few), the service was certainly there, but he got this gig fully on his merits. For The Call Grimes teamed with highly original clarinetist Perry Robinson (as label owner Bernard Stollman has noted, "a virtuoso who merits far wider recognition...and this recording reflects both of their contributions, in equal measure") and stalwart drummer/ESP-Disk' regular Tom Price. As a bassist, Grimes's melodic style is well up to the task of being co-equal voice with a horn, resulting in a thoughtful and texturally rewarding LP with a level of quality far above the rote sideman session cliche, and far away from equally clichéd ideas of unrelentingly full-bore free jazz. It offers the sound of three excellent musicians listening to each other and responding superbly. The Juilliard-trained Grimes appeared on six other ESP LPs besides those already mentioned. He retired at some point after the last of them, 1967's Marzette Watts LP, and went so far off the scene that it was rumored that he had died. Happily, that was not the case, and he reemerged in 2003, moved back to New York, and returned to his prolific ways until illness slowed him down and then took him from us earlier this year (2020).

Featuring his long-running band, Zooid, the two volumes were originally released in 2009 and 2010 even though the music was all recorded at a single session. They were his first releases in eight years, longer than any hiatus in his career, a time that allowed for the gestation of what was to become Threadgill’s signature intervallic system of composition and group improvisation that ultimately won him a Pulitzer Prize for his work In for a Penny, In for a Pound. The original albums were voted the #2 and #5 best releases of the year by The Village Voice Jazz Critics’ Poll, about which NPR said “The jazz world is coming to realize that Threadgill is a true idiosyncratic great…. This Brings Us To staggers and lurches and creates dissonances, and it still brings the mad-scientist funk.”
