As the album title implies ‘Entendre’ is about hearing as a creative process,
referencing the patient unfolding of B rtch’s modular polymetric pieces, with
alertness to the dynamics of touch, finding freedom in aesthetic restriction,
serving the flow of each piece’s development while also taking the music to
new places.

Nils Berg has been a cornerstone of the Swedish jazz scene since the turn of the millennium. Known internationally as an innovative bandleader and collaborator, this release places the spotlight — for the first time — on Berg’s work as a composer for large ensemble.
Paid To Cry is the result of an intensive collaboration with the Norrbotten Big Band, one of Scandinavia’s most acclaimed jazz orchestras. Drawing melodic clarity and emotional directness from composers such as Burt Bacharach and Kurt Weill, while embracing the raw courage of Björk and Sun Ra, and the pulsating minimalism of Steve Reich, the music forms a sound world that feels both familiar and entirely its own.

 Nils Landgren was born in 1956 and grew up with the music of his
father, a jazz cornetist, and the church music of his grandfather, a
pastor. He never lost his strong affinity for his own musical heritage.
 Esbjörn Svensson, born in 1964, didn’t want to play folk music at first.
At home with the music of Chopin, Ellington, or disco-pop groups
such as The Sweet, the pianist had first found his place in the
competitive music scene in Sweden. His trio was a success and in his
homeland, he was voted Jazz Musician Of The Year in 1995 and
1996. The first sprinkling of jobs became a steady flow. Svensson
proved himself in the bands of his friend Nils Landgren. The music
was about funk and soul, occasionally pop and, in the main, classic
jazz. But not folklore.
 It was through the influence of Landgren and Svensson’s former
teacher Bengt-Arne Wallin, who recorded the landmark album ‘Old
Folklore In Swedish Modern’ back in 1962, that Svensson and
Landgren were inspired to make a duo album centred around folk
songs. In August 1997, both went into the studio and, with only
trombone and piano, recorded ‘Swedish Folk Modern’. Their
improvised treatments of the classic songs of the folk culture not only
impressed the public; it brought praise from the press. Svensson and
Landgren had created more than just a few impressions in duo.
Discarding any sort of large conceptual superstructure, they had
continued what Jan Johansson’s Jazz på Svenska and Bengt-Arne
Wallin had begun in the early Sixties and what has since become a
major force within the inner workings of European jazz.
 The time after ‘Swedish Folk Modern’ was hectic and exciting. Nils
Landgren’s Funk Unit advanced to the position of a celebrated festival
act. Svensson’s own trio, E.S.T., expanded beyond Scandinavia’s
borders, where the band’s fortunes skyrocketed. Inundated with jobs,
the musicians finally found the time to once again get together, in
December 1999 in Oslo’s Rainbow Studio. It would be a meeting full
of exceptional jazz energy. Even more than the first time, they would
rely on the force of reduction. Moods would be suggested, left open.
Melodies worked out in simple clarity. Delicate variations
supplemented and amplified both the original and traditional motifs of
the central musical im- pressions. ‘Layers Of Light’ is an affair of the
hearts of two artists who went back to their roots. That makes their
music truthful, direct and authentic in a wondrous way.

 In November, the new ABBA album, ‘Voyage’, will
be released, after 40 years. Just in time for the
music comeback of the year, and as a tribute to the
Swedish supergroup, a classic is now being
released on vinyl for the first time: ‘Funky ABBA’ by
the Nils Landgren Funk Unit from 2004.
 Fans and music magazines count the cover
numbers by Mr. Redhorn and his cult band among
the best in the world, and even today they are
played on the radio and in clubs by DJs. Landgren,
who once played trombone himself on the ABBA
hit ‘Voulez-Vous’, personally asked ABBA
mastermind Benny Andersson for his blessing for
the album: “ABBA was never funky. But if you can
do it, then do it!” replied Andersson. Andersson
was so enthusiastic about the project that he was
also present at the legendary Polar Studio during
the recording sessions and did not miss the
opportunity to record a bonus track for the album
himself as a duo with Viktoria Tolstoy.
 The result was celebrated, and ‘Funky ABBA’
became the best-selling Funk Unit album of all
time. “It's hard to believe: ABBA grooves, and
how!” claimed STEREO in their review after the
CD’s release.

 ‘Paint It Blue’ is dedicated to the man who, for many still today embodies
the central figure at the genre’s source: Julian Edwin ‘Cannonball’
Adderley (1928 - 1975). Maybe he didn’t invent Funk. Together with his
co-musicians in his 60s quintet, Cannonball’s alto sax style, his attitude,
humour great musicality, and his love for his audience allowed him to
become a synonym for funk.
 Nils Landgren, born in 1956, grew up between the music of his father, a
Jazz cornet-player, and the music of his grandfather, a pastor on the
island Gotland. He first heard Cannonball Adderley on ‘Kind Of Blue’. In
this Miles Davis Sextet of the late 1950s, they were all together: “Miles,
the master of beauty. Coltrane, the master of sound. And Cannonball
Adderley, the master of funk,” Nils Landgren writes in the liner notes to
‘Paint It Blue’. From that point on, he procured everything of
Cannonball’s that he could lay his hands on. “Without the soul of
Cannonball it would have been impossible to form my group Funk Unit
many years later,” he writes.
 Landgren edited Cannonball’s live concert announcements into his own
arrangements, so that the time jump between the original and the
nouveau arrangement appears non-existent. An effective device that
literally brings this revered musician into the fold of Nils Landgren’s Funk
Unit.
 Whoever speaks of Cannonball Adderley, must also speak equally of his
brother Nat Adderley. It was an obvious thought to invite the most
important brothers in Jazz after the Adderleys to guest on ‘Paint It Blue’;
with the high energy Funk-Jazzrock of the late 70s, the Brecker brothers
have proven worthy heirs to the Adderleys. Both of them solo on
Landgren’s track ‘You Dig’.
 The equally noble and forcible groove is delivered by the sideman to
countless Soul greats, Bernard Purdie. Bernard’s own stylistically related
production with the Brecker Brothers, Nils Landgren, amongst others is
now strongly in the public consciousness on ‘Soul To Jazz’. Much like
Cannonball Adderley, Airto Moreira owes important impulses to his time
with Miles Davis.
 ‘Paint It Blue’ is possibly Nils Landgren’s most lavish record to date and
with some certainty also his best. Landgren’s playing is cool and smooth,
with warmth, temperament and thought. Here his sound combines
organically with everything he surrounds himself with. The album sounds
as if the recordings for it were a pure joy for all participants. Nils
Landgren has the prerequisite for serious fun, the gift of intelligent
serenity.

It is 25 years since ‘Live in Stockholm’ first appeared on CD, setting in motion Nils Landgren’s unparalleled career in music. And whereas the Funk Unit has long since had cult status throughout Europe, setting the standard wherever it goes, this live recording from 1994 does have something special: a particular roughness, freshness and power and an untrammelled joy in playing. Plus the presence on the album of one of the greats of funk who delivers that extra kick, Maceo Parker. Irresistible funk-jazz with a strong sense of groove and superb soloing are the essence of ‘Live in Stockholm’. John Coltrane’s ‘Impressions’ evokes memories here of the Crusaders in their early 70s prime. Maceo Parker’s influence is palpable, his own special effervescence and his experience from his James Brown days make him such a great saxophonist for soul and R&B: again and again he really puts the icing on the cake. On the tracks ‘Mr. M’ and ‘Red Horn’, Parker and Landgren with rapper Magnum Coltrane Price conjure up the heat of a James Brown performance. Jazz memories then resurface in Miles Davis’ ‘So What’ which rounds off the set. This is one of those once-in-a lifetime concerts and it has lost none of its magic. ‘Live in Stockholm’ was the first milestone for the Nils Landgren Funk Unit. It is a musthave for people who love funk - and now for people who are serious about vinyl too. “40 years ago my international career started for real when I got
a call from the musical mastermind Thad Jones, asking me to
join his new big band project Ball of Fire in Milan, Italy.
“Guess if I said yes!
“Since then I have walked winding musical paths and I still do.
“As the pandemic started to spread, I got stranded at home in
Skillinge Sweden from 13 March 2020.
“Many many months later, I can present something I’ve never
done before, a solo performance. Only me, myself and my
trombone in a beautiful-sounding church not far away from
where I live with my wife Beatrice, Ingelstorp Kyrka.
“I do not really know exactly when the idea got stuck in my head
but I guess around Christmas 2020. Having spent a strange but
personally wonderful year being at home, I suggested a solo
recording to my wife, and she thought it was a great idea.
“I called the priest in the church, named Maria, and she
immediately said ‘Yes, go for it. I will see to it that the church is
heated and ready for you.’
“The first time was almost a shock. Such a beautiful sound,
making the tone of my trombone just fly through time and
space. Beatrice and I looked at each other in silence, knowing
that this can become something special.
“I picked a wide range of songs and hymns for these occasions
and it felt very special to be able to record it in a wonderful room
with only one person in the audience, the one I love the most.
“All the songs have a special meaning to me, whether they are
songs I sang in church as a child or just picked them up on the
way. One is even written by one of my ancestors, Israel
Kolmodin.
“They present a side of me that is always there, but not always
to be seen. I hope you like it.

"Glodetrådar", the commissioned work for Vossajazz 2016, is a sort of "back to the roots" for Nils Okland. The area of Voss has been an important part of his musical development, in the 80's as a student and later as the musical leader at Ole Bull Akademiet (1989-95). His time at the academy gave him important impulses that inspired his characteristic, personal style: the mix between jazz, free improvisation, contemporary music and folk music. In this work Okland holds true to his unique style with simple melodies and a sincere tone that go straight to the heart. At one moment it's calm and meditative, the next we find ourselves in a rock universe with the distortion turned to max.

One of the most successful German jazz musicians, Nils Wülker has won multiple awards, and collaborated with the likes of Jill Scott, Craig Armstrong, OmaraPortuondo (Buena Vista Social Club), and Peter Vettese.



“Go” is Nils’ excursion into the world of electronics. The recording is "maximally not live" with analog synthesizers, the arpeggiator, the organic loops and beats.



In contrast it presents some of his most beautiful compositions so far - and his most dynamic trumpet playing beyond his live albums and concerts.



Recorded with members of his live band, as well as American trumpeter Theo Croker on "Highline", their remote duet.

Nils Økland is interested in the journeys and dialogues of music across time and space, a music without national and traditional borders. At the same time, he is also very inspired by local music from many places and often prefers old fiddlers and singers who have a unique personal playing style. The first concert with Nils Økland Band took place in 2014, and since then, they have released the Norwegian Grammy nominated "Kjølvatn" on ECM and "Lysning" on Hubro, which won the award. It has been seven years since their last release. On March 1st, the highly anticipated album "Gjenskinn" (Gleam) is set to be released. The band has been working on the album for a long time, resulting in a genre-defying, cohesive work inspired by influences from around the world. Nils Økland, known for his innovative playing style on the Hardanger fiddle, violin, and viola d'amore, comes from the folk music tradition and is internationally recognized. He has collaborated with major orchestras, composed music for various mediums, and played on albums with notable musicians. Additionally, he is a member of the rock trio Lumen Drones (ECM), their latest release (Umbra) was released on Hubro, and he was a member of the improvisation band 1982 (Hubro), bridging folk, classical, and improvisational music. The Nils Økland Band consists of several of the foremost musicians in Norway: Rolf-Erik Nystrøm (saxophone), Sigbjørn Apeland (organ), Håkon Mørch Stene (percussion), Mats Eilertsen (double bass). These are musicians who, individually, have collaborated with Økland for a long time, but many of them had not played together before Økland formed the band. Rolf Erik Nystrøm has played in the genre-crossing contemporary music trio Poing for several decades, in addition to being a soloist with large orchestras, playing with world and folk musicians, and in various jazz bands. Sigbjørn Apeland has a long history of collaboration with Økland. They play a lot as a duo and have also played in the band 1982 for ten years, along with drummer Øyvind Skarbø. Percussionist Håkon Mørch Stene plays in the contemporary ensemble Asamisimasa and has also released critically acclaimed albums featuring music by Laurence Crane, Gavin Bryars, and Michael Pisaro on Hubro. Mats Eilertsen is the leading jazz bassist of his generation. He has played with a number of prominent jazz musicians such as Tord Gustavsen, Trygve Seim, Bendik Hofseth, and has released several albums under his own name on both Hubro and ECM. Deep-tripped-out jazz-fusion from Israeli bass maestro Nim Sadot - featuring members of Ruby Rushton and Ill Considered….

Nimbus Sextet are a major new talent on the UK jazz scene. Led by pianist/keyboardist Joe Nichols, the Glaswegian contemporary jazz outfit play infectiously original music that spans the musical spectrum. Nimbus Sextet’s fresh take on jazz blends instantly relatable melodic hooks with driving grooves, sophisticated musicianship and episodic compositions.
The core of the Nimbus Sextet sound comes courtesy of Joe with long-time collaborators Alex Palmer and Mischa Stevens. The trio met while studying at Edinburgh University and have continued to perform together ever since. Nimbus Sextet was fully formed in 2018 with the addition of Martin Fell and Euan Allardice joining the line-up with James Mackay arriving later.
It was around this point the band started to compose and record the first shoots of what would become Nimbus Sextet’s blend. A decidedly wellbalanced alchemy, arrived at somewhat naturally
by way of the varied musical influences and contributions from each of its culturally diverse members. You’re as likely to hear elements of
Herbie Hancock and Gil Scott-Heron as easily as The Roots and Robert Glasper.

‘Paths of Color’ is Nina Ryser’s sixth solo album. In
line with her past few releases, ‘Paths of Color’ is
characteristic Nina Ryser: dreamy, wonky, synthbased art-pop that’s bubbly, edgy, sweet and dark
all at once; with elements of post-punk, art rock
and free jazz. But on ‘Paths of Color’, Ryser has
honed her home recording and mixing skills and
refined her home studio set-up, making it her most
polished-sounding work yet. And, along with the
mastering skills of Angel Marcloid (Fire-Toolz), it is
intentionally clearer-sounding than anything she
has yet produced. But she’s maintained that
homemade vibe, as well as the freedom of
childhood expression that is so crucial to her
sound. Her background in contemporary classical
music serves to hold it all together in a taut,
designful balance.
Do-it-all-herself musician and artist Nina Ryser has
been home-recording since she was eight years
old on her Fisher-Price toy tape machine. She’s
also spent the past seven years in the buzzing artnoise-rock trio Palberta (as well as the projects Old
Maybe, Shimmer, Data and Fire Roast).

Her first album for Philips, it consists of selected performances recorded live at Carnegie Hall in March and April 1964.

The Amazing Nina Simone - released in 1959 - was her first album for Colpix Records. The album contains a variety of material, including jazz, gospel, and folk songs. Compared to her debut, which showcased Simone's piano playing ability in addition to her singing, the piano was downplayed on Amazing in favor of string arrangements. The orchestra is led by famous conductor Bob Mersey (staff arranger/composer for CBS television and Columbia Records and also their musical director).

Originally released in February 1959, Dark Horse’s limited pink vinyl reissue includes a 12x12 insert with an introduction written by Dhani Harrison. Little Girl Blue includes some of Simone’s best-known tracks, including "My Baby Just Cares for Me" and “I Loves You, Porgy,” and even at this early stage in her career, listeners can hear the profound impact she would have on the musical landscape in the ensuing decades.

In truth, Nina’s resurgence came a couple of years later in 1987 when the luxury brand Chanel No. 5 featured ‘My Baby Just Cares For Me’ in a UK TV ad campaign. Charly released the song and took it to #5 on the national pop charts. We reissue here as part of the forthcoming 50th Anniversary celebrations.

First issued in 1961 on Columbia’s early music venture Colpix, Forbidden Fruit is widely acknowledged as the best of Nina Simone’s early releases. Producer Cal Lampley choose to cast her in varied settings, blending a rendition of Oscar Brown’s ‘Rags And Old Iron’ with a unique take of Bessie Smith’s ‘Gin House Blues,’ contrasting with Billie Holiday’s ‘No Good Man’ and ‘I’ll Look Around,’ which Simone shifts to her own image. Her backing trio aim for the understated, the rhythm section leaving ample room for Simone’s appealing piano lines, nicely complimented by Al Shackman’s guitar. Nina Simone’s big break consisted of the recording made during her September 12, 1959 concert at New York’s Town Hall. The 1960 LP Nina Simone at Newport (recorded live at the Newport Jazz Festival on June 30, 1960, and included here in its entirety) was an attempt to repeat the success of that live album. It presents strong performances by Nina of “Trouble in Mind” and “You’d Be So Nice to Come Home To,” among others. Simone is accompanied by her regular rhythm section, consisting of Al Schackman on guitar, Chris White on bass, and Rob Hamilton on drums.
