On the Prowl's Party Breaks imprint is back, this time with a four-track collection of tunes from label co-owner and the other half of Runaway, Jacques Renault. Here, we find the Brooklyn-based DJ and producer doing one of the things he does best: edits. However, unlike previous releases, Renault is expanding his reach and dabbling in genres he hasn't publicly unleashed before--the 12' begins with an ode to the sounds of early 90s raves (complete with air horns and a Mary J. Blige vocal sample), hops over to the deep house styles of the era with a jam that sounds right out of a Crystal Waters playbook, and finally lands on a couple of electrified, feel-good disco edits, properly (and authentically) embellished with fidgety guitars, sexy vocals, and a dash of piano glitz.

Great new 12' compilation featuring a superb selection of tracks showcasing the Balearic sound of the mighty Richie Havens. First up is his awesome take on the Lamont Dozier classic 'Going Back To My Roots'. Originally released back in 1980, Richie's version was rediscovered later by the early Balearic DJs and became an anthem on that scene. Also included are Richie's incredible versions of classics like Fleetwood Mac's 'Dreams', The Doobie Brothers' 'Long Train Running' and his beautifully lush take on The Beatles' 'Strawberry Fields Forever' as well as the gorgeous sun-kissed vibe of 'Gay Cavalier', a captivating duet with Pino Daniele taken from Havens' 1983 LP 'Common Ground'. A decade in the making, Soul Cal is the definitive survey of America's best, independent, 70s soul-ensembles. Profiled within this album and book are the bands that transitioned from funk to disco; the bands that kept up the backbeat as rhythm moved to the backseat. Against the odds, they left recorded artifacts for we at Now-Again to dig out, dust off and restore. Collected here for the first time are the musical dreams of dozens, dreams that were deferred but were never discarded. Soul Cal features some well-known figures from the various 'soul' scenes that paved the way for their resurgence. The Northern Soul, Modern Soul and Deep Disco and Funk circles have all obsessed over the likes of Luther Davis, Rhythm Machine, Mixed Sugar and Record Player. But these and Soul Cal's other bands - many of whom managed only to release a solitary 7' single in their heyday - will be unknown to most. Their obscurity notwithstanding, the music made by these bands is sure to strike a chord within the soul of any person taken by black American music from the latter half of the 20th century. 01 Rufus And Chaka Khan - Ain't Nobody

This double pack 12' will include 6 previously unreleased and highly coveted remixes. Stars of the show are two extremely coveted and previously unreleased 12' mixes from Teena Marie and Tata Vega. The Teena Marie track has previously been released in edited form on a flexidisc, which generated a huge amount of praise and excitement within the Motown community, and are sure to become dancefloor staples upon release.

A few trips in Tel Aviv made Ivan Smagghe aware of the extensive and more importantly, quasi forgotten, wave and pop scene from Israel. Blown away some of the tracks passed on to him, He and The Ginger Prince thought it would be a good start for the LDDLM reissues series, edits and originals.

GAZOLINA by CHROMOSOME is one of those record hunters grail. Fetching far too much money on Discogs these days and having been a DJing classic of RED AXES for years, it was only natural that Niv and Dori got their hands dirty. Their edit keeps the raw punk rage of the original and is all the better for it.

NOSEI HAMIGBAAT's BIRTHDAY was the track that triggered it all and appears on vinyl for the first time in 30 years (I strongly recommend buying the CD of their album on Anova, a label dedicated to excavating the TA underground). This is a heavily psychedelic romp, as if the 13th floor elevator had stopped on the 1983th floor. Wave, but in a cramped style. THIS HAS BEEN LEFT UNTOUCHED, IN ALL IT'S BEAUTY.

The purists will tell me that TOVA GERTNER is not part of the DOWNTOWN TEL AVIV scene. They are right, she is not. But ETMOL (1987), a chart hit in Israel, was too much of a good pop song to let pass. Tim Paris and Ivan Smagghe are on IT'S A FINE LINE edit duty and have made up a genre for it: Balnearic, the sound of the beach and the nose bleed - pianos and hands not in the air but in your pockets, searching for those empty wraps.

THE VINYL WILL HAVE A SPIRAL GROOVE "LINKING" OUR EDIT TO THE ORIGINAL but still enabling you to play one or the other. WE HAVE INCLUDED, JUST FOR YOU, the "mix in two halves". If ever you play in Tel Aviv, we strongly recommend dropping it.

Welcome reissue of this super-rare 1978 disco classic from Greek singing superstar Demis Roussos. The extended mix of L.O.V.E. Got A Hold Of Me featured on this highly-collectable Canadian 12' pressing from Mercury was a massive favourite of David Mancuso's at his legendary Loft parties and understandably so. A tight percussive groove topped with beautiful swirling strings and the big man's soaring sexy vocals, this special long version provides ten minutes of blissful dubbed-out disco heaven which still rocks dancefloors today for any DJ lucky enough to have a copy. The flip is also rather good, with I Just Live, a very useful funky workout with another positive message that includes some fantastic percussion and great harmonica action. Top class!

Superb new four track EP featuring more super cool sun-kissed Balearic rarities. First up is the lush deep house beauty of 'Twilight' by Trio Zero aka Larry Heard, a wonderful lost gem by the maestro previously only available on the Black Havana LP from '89, followed by the gorgeous Paresseuse Dub of 'C'est La Ouate' a dreamy downtempo gem taken from the B side of a 1985 pop song by French singer Caroline Loeb. The flipside keeps up the pressure with another sought after rarity, the incredible Dub mix of Equa's 'City Lights', an awesome laidback UK jazz funk groover from '83 that got plays both in Ibiza and on the jazz funk scene. Rounding things up is the great slo-mo tribal Balearic sound of 'Nijána' by Czech jazz artist Jana Koubková taken from her 1985 'Bosa' LP. A quality selection - don't sleep!

Following the success of Disco Recharge's recent Ian Levine produced Evelyn Thomas, James Wells and
Miquel Brown packages, we're delighted add the brilliant Barbara Pennington to the series with 'Out Of The
Darkest Night Plus' - a compilation of the best of Barbara's mid 1980s recordings.
Following her 1977 success with the magnificent '24 Hours A Day' (a No.1 Billboard Dance Chart smash) and
her 1984 release of the charging 'All American Boy', Barbara decided she wanted to update her sound to
something more contemporary for her next recordings and this proved a good choice when she hit paydirt
with 'Fan The Flame' which supplied her first ever U.K. hit spending 3 weeks in the Top 75. This was swiftly
followed by the wonderful 'On A Crowded Street' which dented the Top 60 U.K. chart for 5 weeks in mid-
1985.
Compiled by Simon White, 'Out Of The Darkest Night Plus' compiles and re-masters all of the key Barbara
Pennington tracks from this period, mostly using versions and mixes which have not previously been easily
available. Comprehensive sleeve notes by Simon White, also include a one-to-one interview with Ian Levine
regarding these recordings along with key scans and photos from this era. As per usual, you can expect the
usual standards that the Disco Recharge releases are renowned for!

Another round of wonderful eclectic delights from Balearica. Side A features the in demand 'Tony's Song' by Tony G. Originally released back in '88, this floorfilling electro-tinged house classic features an incredibly catchy piano riff, phat bassline and some spoken vocals taken from Al Pacino's 'Scarface'. A massive hit both at Amnesia in Ibiza as well as at Manchester's Hacienda and at the early Acid House parties, this track still sounds super fresh. Next up is the dope vocoder-laden groove of Escape from New York's 'Slow Beat' - a brilliant Balearic chugger that features high on many most-wanted lists. On the flipside, we get the much desired slo-mo disco of Steve Bender's 'The Final Thing' - a moog-heavy groover that hit big at both the Balearic parties and on Italy's Cosmic scene. Then finally, to round off this great compilation is the extended instrumental version of Bowie & Methany's 'This Is Not America' - a favourite of everyone from Alfredo to Theo Parrish. Joey Negro compiled albums including 'GoGo Get Down', 'Backstreet Brit Funk', 'Destination Boogie' and the everpopular
Soul of Disco series Z Records continues to release high quality compilations filled with lesser known disco, funk and
boogie.
Now it's the return of the highly regarded Under The Influence series with Volume Four compiled by Nick The Record.
My whole life has revolved around records.
I was buying Hip Hop and House in the Eighties as it was released and I got
heavily into tracing the steps back through breaks and sample sources that were used in Hip Hop records. I also joined the
dots between Disco & modern club & House music & spread my music explorations from Rare Groove to rare Disco. There
were very few people interested in this vein of music history at the time & even fewer as obsessed as me so when the reemergence
of Disco exploded I was well ahead of the curve, not only in collecting but historical knowledge. The best thing
about record collecting is it never ends and after 35 years of buying, after 25 years of selling & playing records there is still old
stuff to discover & new releases to endeavour to keep up with.
So as something of an expert in all things Disco I get quite a few offers to release compilations but as a record obsessive my
natural hoarding mentality makes me cautious to give up the goods. As anyone who's been aware of my record selling
website www.djfriendy.co.uk over the last 10 years and my paper sales lists (now that's old school) for more than 10 years
preceding, I could easily put together a compilation of the rarest Disco & Boogie 12 inches, and there are, of course, some
of those included but I wanted to share more than that here.
I feel this 'Under The Influence' series offers the chance to put together a more personal comp, which reflects the many
different flavours of my taste & my collection & gives you a feel of my DJ style at the same time.

Following on from the phenomenal success of the recent 'Remixed With Love' compilation plus more Joey Negro compiled albums including 'GoGo Get Down', 'Backstreet Brit Funk', 'Destination Boogie' and the ever-popular Soul of Disco series Z Records continues to release high quality compilations filled with lesser known disco, funk and boogie. Now it's the turn of 'Italo House' to get the JN selection treatment with over 20 tracks hand picked from the late 80's and early 90's covering a lot of the deeper classics and some lesser known releases from a golden era of Italian dance music. The late 80s were undoubtedly a golden era for dance music. A time which saw the birth of many genres and sub genres - from acid house to hardcore to Balearic - and of course Italo house. If you ask Jo Raver to name an Italo house track, they'd probably come back with Blackbox, Jinny, Fiddlefatti or one of many big piano tune. At the same time there was another equally distinctive sound coming out of Italy- a warmer, deeper, more emotional style which didn't yield any commercial hits. The sound was more jazzy and soulful with syncopated percussion, dreamy pads and, though piano was often used, it wasn't in the obviously programmed, big breakdown style which became a cliché of the Italo house genre. This more underground side of Italo was closer to the original American house sound- but still retained a very European flavour. In common with other Z compilations which have featured Britfunk and GoGo, this album was an important release for me. Important because I love a lot of the records, many of which have been largely forgotten about, but also because there
really was a unique sound coming out of Italy, spread across many labels and involving numerous producers. As a result, it has never really been fully showcased like this before. It is a bow to the era of all-round enthusiasm for space exploration and travelling to far off galaxies that swept across Russian (then Soviet) youth in the late 70's-early 80's. Highly influenced by the sound of the likes of Didier Marouani's Space and Soviet space-rock legend Zodiac (which sold 20 million copies of their albums in the USSR and lately found way to Environ's 'Unclassics' compilation), all four tracks on the EP are well charged with nostalgic analogue synth lines, powerful guitar riffs and dynamic live drums. If someone told us this was some unreleased stuff produced back in 1980, we would certainly believe...

Wir alle wissen, sobald Musikgenres alt werden, scheinen die wichtigen, relevanten Teile auf einmal durch und diese Zusammenstellung versteht sich als Dokument eines fast vergessenen Teils der West Coast Musikwelt Mitte bis Ende der 70er Jahre. Wir hören diese Einflüsse heute nicht nur in Alt-Pop/Indie Bands wie Midlake, Haim, Gonzales, John Grant, Ariel Pink, Jonathan Wilson, Rhye, Devendra Banhart, Darkside, Destroyer, Phoenix, sondern auch in der discoiden Clubmusik von Acts wie Chromeo, Breakbot, Holy Ghost!, Todd Terje. Nicht zu vergessen Daft Punks "Random Access Memories", ein Album, das nicht nur dem Sound of L.A. Ende der Siebziger gewidmet ist, sondern sogar mit Hilfe einer Handvoll eleganter Studiomusiker aus der Zeit eingespielt wurde. Einige davon finden wir als junge Musiker auch auf den Songs von "Too Slow To Disco".

Clearly inspired by 80's American synthetic moods sounding like Jan Hammer or Giorgio Moroder. Man nannte sie nicht umsonst die - Me Me Me Generation'. Die sehr von sich überzeugten bärtigen Musiker (und die Musikerinnen in wabernden Kleidern), die Mitte/Ende der 70er in L.A.'s Strassen rum hingen und sich selbst feierten. Der geschmackvolle Teil der Musik-Welt hätte diese Musikrichtung noch vor einigen Monaten nicht mit der Zange angefasst. Zu sanft, zu übertrieben, zu luxuriös, zu offen hedonistisch, zu ausladend. Zu unecht, zu gekünstelt, nicht authentisch, und dann noch diese unfassbaren Akkordwechsel...Aber ' Too Slow To Disco - vol. 1' hält sich nicht auf mit solchen alten Geschichten und Klischees. Songs von Musikern, die damals gerade ihre ersten, oft wenig erfolgreichen Schritte unternahmen, bevor sie Jahre später mal eben eine Handvoll Welthits aus dem Ärmel schüttelten und die - grosse Welle' der Musik der kalifonischen Küste surften. Also, willkommen zu Volume 1 unseres sogenannten PRM (Personal Rediscovery Movement).

Limited double A side reissue of two classic disco bombs by 70s keyboardist Don Ray. With production duties undertaken by French electro-disco legend Cerrone, both tracks are proper dancefloor weapons laden with heavy synths, bouncing b-lines and awesome punchy horns. First up is the amazing Groove Armada-sampled disco stomper 'Standing In The Rain', featuring powerful vocals over a searing groove that made it massive at the time. Flip over for 'Got To Have Loving', an exhilarating disco burner with hot sexy female vocals and a great breakdown later reworked by The Revenge. Superb double-header of must-have tracks - don't sleep!
