Any historians keen on the subject of "French youth in the 1980s" are holding a treasure in their hands. As a true archaeologist of this decade dedicated to disposable culture, digger-in-chief Vidal Benjamin with his newest compilation, 'Pop Sympathie', offers them a unique journey in the heart of the cyclone of emotions that struck all teenagers during the first seven years of François Mitterrand's mandate. Fifteen musical nuggets, exhumed from the dungeons of history, each and every one of them teaching us about what really obsessed the youngsters at that exact moment, i.e. what happens when the city lights come on at dusk, when irrepressible urges that stir them to get lost even more appear until the end of the night.
The artists gathered here did not have the honour of breaking into the local charts, but they all individually reached for the sky. Each song of 'Pop Sympathie' tells more or less the same story: that of a girl who throws herself into the night like one immerses one's self into the void, who rushes into a one-night adventure to become a star. And too bad if in the early morning she finds herself back at square one. In all these miniature odysseys there is neon lights, lasers, smoke machines, broken glass on checkered tiles, strangers on leather benches, celebrities in the bathrooms, stolen kisses, alcohol, drugs and cigarettes, Polaroids, venetian blinds and radioactive tubes.
If the first opus of Vidal Benjamin, 'Disco Sympathie', focused on the funky mood of songs that could have been played at Le Palace, then 'Pop Sympathie' develops itself as the imaginary soundtrack of another nightclub, Les Bains-Douches, the capital’s epicenter of nocturnal drifts. So what do we listen to, blasé, at Bains-Douches? Mainly synthesizers. The child of punk and post punk, French New Wave celebrates the matrimony of machines and lolitas under the auspices of a retro trend that revisits the atomic age. Trying to surf on that wave and hit the charts, a bunch of producers (Stéphane Berlow, Laurent Stopnicki, Bernard "Black Devil" Fèvre, Johny Rech, Jean-Yves Joanny ...) will spot their talents amongst friends, in a travel agency or at the local bar. These virtual stars are called Cecilia, Laurent, Sonia, Janou, Fabienne, Anne, Arielle or Ronan, not even 20 years old, and often leaving just an overexposed photo and their first name on a single as the only memories of their swift passage in this particular musical story. It took all the love and sweet madness of Vidal Benjamin to bring them back in the light of day.

Another classic from Dutch High Fashion Music in it's original High Fashion 1982 sleeve.
Original released on the Musix Records imprint in 1982, produced by legendary Italian producer Maurizio 'Sangy' Sangineto. (Change, Armed Gang, Firefly). Including a New Mix by Dino Soccio from LA (for his Pleasure of Love release) and re-worked by Dutch producer Orson Welsh: giving this Italo-sound classic a more powerful touch. On the B-side the original 1982 version, as well as the much sought-after 'Soul Version'!

Tempo Dischi's second release is one of electronic music’s seminal albums; 1798 Italian space disco album: Automat by Automat.
A year after the release of Oxygène by Jean Michel Jarre, a milestone for electronic music, “Automat" was released in Italy, a timeless record that has influenced the years to come. Released in 1978 by EMI Italia, the album has been produced by two veteran italian songwriters and composers, Romano Musumarra and Claudio Gizzi after meeting Mario Maggi, one of the major innovators in the manufacturing of electronic instruments in Italy. Maggi invented the first programmable monophonic synthesizer ever made: the MCS70. Its sounds have been the basis for the production of the whole Automat album. That synth was used only for this record and remained a prototype, leaving a halo of mystery behind this record.
The album moves in the furrows of an atypical space disco, with abstract classical arias alternating with more sustained rhythms, which combine electronic experiments, progressive psychedelic journeys with cinematic themes. The A Side, composed by Gizzi is an electronic disco-tinged suite divided into three parts (The Rise, The Advance, The Genius). Ater a brief spatial intro, the insistent arpeggio expands into a soundtrack theme with a sumptuous melody, which slowly fades away to make room for a progressive psychedelic journey. The B Side, composed by Musumarra, is made by three tracks, including ‘Droid‘, one of the most representative songs of the electronic music of the early eighties. A magic sequence between the bassline, the electro drums, and the spatial disco theme with a futuristic and cinematic mood. This is a record that has influenced the music of our days and after 40 years may still sound contemporary.

After CV’s double Special Delivery LP released in 2018, Edit Service is back with its fifth release, an EP of edits by the young Moscovite duo known as Ólta Karawane, noticed for their edits on Maturre and Discos Capablanca. We’ve been playing their edits very often lately, so it seemed natural to release them on Edit Service. a1 - les portrait le diacre astvatsatour sarkissian Opening the EP is this early 80’s antipodean cut somewhere between new wave and post-punk where a shopping list is recited by a male and a female voice engaged in call and response. Innocent and catchy on the surface with its electric keyboard, primitive drum machine and bass guitar, it seems there is something perverse lurking within this tune.
a2 - folle vendredi soir On this cut, Ólta Karawane take an obscure guitar-driven Italian tune from the early 80s with coolly detached vocals that are closer to New York’s phlegmatic post-punk than Rimini’s exuberant italo. Extending the tune and reinforcing the dance-inducing rhythmic section, the Russian duo’s edit is a groovy affair.
a3 - farine The original was a late 80’s hit by an Austrian pop band, with a bassline not far from that of a seminal italo-german hi-nrg hit. This mid tempo edit strips it down to its bare essentials, synth arpeggios, 808 programming, and various bits and bobs. Extended, it’s a catchy and compelling cut.
b1 - oinj Here Ólta Karawane take a dissonant art rock tune from a British producer and focus on underlining the track’s intricate melodic and subtle but danceable rhythmic arrangements. There is a playful and slightly mysterious Eastern feel on this edit fit for hash dens.
b2 - racaille Closing the EP is an edit of a highly-influential Swiss producer. The original was released in the mid-80’s and has proto-trance written all over it. By slowing it down and extending it, Ólta Karawane highlight the warm and bittersweet analog synth arpeggio at the track’s core and make the electro beat driving the tune even more spacious.

The first release in Ernesto Chahoud’s ‘Middle Eastern Heavens’ reissue series for BBE Music, we are delighted to present Lebanese maestro Ihsan Al-Munzer’s 1979 album ‘Belly Dance Disco’.
In late 70's and early 80's Beirut, Lebanese organist, composer and arranger Ihsan Al-Munzer made a series of pioneering synth-driven fusion albums that reimagined Middle Eastern music. The records came at a pivotal time in Lebanon’s musical history of avant garde experimentation that was blossoming, just as the country’s 15-year civil war took hold.
Ihsan Al-Munzer’s first release as a solo artist, ‘Belly Dance Disco’ aimed to fuse ‘Western’ modern music and bellydance to make it more accessible to the local audience in the late 1970s. “I wanted to put a mixture of European beat with Arabic percussion, but I made the European rhythm and harmony very easy to listen to for the Arabic ear – soft and understandable” says Al- Munzer.
Today, the composer’s music has made the return journey back to the West; with tracks on the album featured by hip hop artists such as Mos Def, who sampled Al-Munzer’s composition ‘Joy of Lina’ on his 2009 song ‘The Embassy’.
The 10-track album was released in 1979 on the legendary Voix De L’Orient label, which was also home to pioneering Lebanese composers The Rahbani Brothers. One of the earliest artists to introduce the synthesizer to Middle Eastern music, Al-Munzer leads the band, playing the main melody lines on the Kawai Organ and Solina String Synthesizer. Three of his original compositions feature on the album, alongside creative re-imaginings of Turkish and Arabic folklore and modern classics, pushing the boundaries of bellydance music to chime with the international scene.
Al-Munzer’s five titles from the 1970's and 1980's are part of BBE’s ‘Middle Eastern Heavens’ reissue series, a collection of groundbreaking productions from Lebanon, curated by Lebanese DJ, compiler and music researcher Ernesto Chahoud.
Notes by Natalie Shooter, a music journalist and researcher based in Beirut, edited by Will Sumsuch.

Jerome Derradji and Past Due Records are proud to present the Jammers on a Dj friendly DLP and CD.

Disco music is one of the most popular genres in pop and 40 years on from its’ late ‘70’s golden period still has a profound influence on contemporary artists and all types of dance music but it’s the chart dominating late ‘70s years that this compilation focuses on.
‘Disco’ is 30 floor-filling tracks across 2 LPs and is the first time that such a comprehensive and cross-label compilation has celebrated the genre on vinyl. Whether for self-purchase or for a great gift ‘Disco’ is the perfect compilation for lovers of all things pop.
The album starts with one of the biggest floor-fillers of all time with ABBA’s ‘Dancing Queen’ and features other huge party anthems from Village People, Gloria Gaynor, Sylvester, Lipps Inc., Heatwave and Kool & The Gang to name but a few. Some of the biggest Disco tracks were infused with soul and here you’ll find Earth Wind & Fire with The Emotions, The Jacksons, Odyssey, Rose Royce, McFadden & Whitehead, A Taste Of Honey and the epic ‘Don’t Leave Me This Way’ from Thelma Houston.
In 1977 Donna Summer’s ‘I Feel Love’ changed the sound of dance music forever and is included here along with other trail-blazing tracks from Alicia Bridges, Vicki Sue Robinson, Frantique, The Emotions and The Three Degrees. Long established superstars enjoyed a huge renaissance thanks to their disco hits including here Cher and the Chic-produced ‘Upside Down’ by Diana Ross.
As Disco became mainstream pop, the Top 10 was full of hypnotic vocals over a thumping bass and a soaring melody - Yvonne Elliman, Andrea True Connection, Eruption, Sarah Brightman & Hot Gossip, Tina Charles, Dee D. Jckson and the #1 smash ‘Yes Sir, I Can Boogie’ from Baccara are all included.

After being blown away by a few tunes - probably just as you will be after listening to this - Samy Ben Redjeb travelled to the infamous capital city of Somalia in November of 2016, making Analog Africa the first music label to set foot in Mogadishu.
On his arrival in Somalia Samy began rifling through piles of cassettes and listening to reel-to-reel tapes in the dusty archives of Radio Mogadishu, looking for music that ‘swam against the current’.
The stars were aligned: an uncovered and unmarked pile
of discarded recordings was discovered in a cluttered corner of the building. Colonel Abshir - the senior employee and protector of Radio Mogadishu’s archives - clarified that the pile consisted mostly of music nobody had manage to identify, or music he described as being ‘mainly instrumental and strange music’.
At the words ‘strange music’ Samy was hooked, the return flight to Tunisia was cancelled. The pile turned out to be a cornucopia of different sounds: radio jingles, background music and interludes for radio programmes, television shows and theatre plays. There were also a good number of disco tunes, some had been stripped of their lyrics, the interesting parts had been recorded multiple times then cut, taped together and spliced into a long groovy instrumental loop.
Like everywhere in Africa during the 1970s, both men and women sported huge afros, bell-bottom trousers and platform shoes.
James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Marvin Gaye and The Temptations’ funk were the talk of the town. In 1977, Iftin Band were invited to perform at the Festac festival in Lagos where they represented Somalia at the Second World Black and African Festival of Arts and Culture.
Not only did they come back with an award but they also returned with Afrobeat. While Fela Kuti’s ‘Shakara’ had taken over the continent and was spreading like wildfire throughout Latin America, it was the track ‘Lady’ that would become the hit in Mogadishu.

Kobza Vajk is a Hungarian self-taught psychedelic folk musician who has been playing the oud and other obscure stringed instruments, like kithara or the lute for more than 15 years.
His main influences are folk and ancient music of all kinds, what brings these together is his contemporary approach of composing and the oriental technique he plays his instruments with.
This release focuses on his original work from the late 2000's with a few reinterpretations coming from established e-music producers.
The title track is a live recording from 2008, perfectly setting the mood for the whole EP: psychedelic shaman music with powerful oud chords and a hypnotic Middle Eastern atmosphere.
In his remix Dutch producer, Perdu keeps one of the main patterns of the original but by adding some extra percussion he turns it into an entranced tribal banger.
Next up is Multi Culti boss, Dreems, who revisited one of the most famous Hungarian folk songs creating a uniquely interesting piece with dubish subs and the twisted main melody.
The final track is a more carefully tempered yet driving remix by Hungarian producer and Budabeats staple, Bete (aka Suhov).

Off the back of the recent Gumba Fire compilation, Soundway
selects more sure-fire disco burners: a 4-track, dancefloor-
orientated EP drawing from the Heads label out of South Africa.
The Heads label lasted a brief two years between 1982 and 1984.
Started and run by the late South African producer and singer Emil Zoghby, it released only a handful of records before folding.
The early 1980s in the country was a time when disco was starting to fade into what was becoming known as Bubblegum: pop music aimed at the black population of South Africa.
William Mthethwa and his backing band the Young Five started
off in the late 1970s and throughout the 1980s Mthethwa became a big star not only within his native Sotho community but all over South Africa. As with many of his releases, You Turn Me On' was produced by the renowned engineer and producer Peter Moticoe.
This was a big, meaty, classic early 80s disco jam that appeared on a 12' only, featuring a long instrumental dub version on the B-side.
New York's JKriv takes elements of the vocal and dub and reworks them into a condensed dancefloor winner.
Adaye were a Heads studio outfit featuring Tom Dollar on vocals,
and selected here is their typically 1980s track Turn it Up' which
saw some success in the charts. The Manyane cut Thabong' fuses traditional Sotho music with electronics, synths and drum machines - a popular style at the time.
Sofrito's Frankie Francis gives both the Adaye and Manyane tracks the cut-up treatment focussing heavily on the spaced-out weirdness of the dub versions but adding nothing other than a fine ear for an edit.
To complete the set we include Picnic', another in-demand track
from the Heads archives that was originally the flip side to the track Picnicing' (featured on Gumba Fire) by the mostly instrumental studio outfit Starlight. They recorded one album and a series of 12s that included classic covers of American and Italian disco cuts.

Amsterdam dwelling editor par excellence Em Vee took the solo reigns on the inaugural Lumberjacks In Hell - and truly excelled with a great reimagination of "Miss You". The second release on the label sees the German share duties with Spanish edit demon Rayko, with the Rare Wiri boss hogging the A Side. First up is an expert rearrangement of Candi Staton's cover of the Bee Gee's standard "Nights On Broadway" which strips the track of its orchestral leanings to focus on the groove! Following this is a meaty take on a classic, with Barbara Keith's cover of "All Along The Watchtower" reinforced with some bottom end bump. Em Vee spreads a special disco version of Alma Lee's late 70s Philly delight "Gimme Your Love" with an extended intro that fully displays his edit talents.

French DJ / producer / singer Jean Tonique is poised to announce his brand new 7-track album with the arrival of 'sunny side up' due this October and will pre-empt its release with an end of summer pop gem 'too bad'. Having released his acclaimed debut album 'Well Mannered Frivolity' last year, described by DJ Magazine as 'slickly produced' and 'irresistible', Tonique returns older and wiser with 'sunny side up', focusing on raw, organic song-writing while still maintaining his affinity for French touch, house, 70s funk and hip-hop.
Jean Tonique's previous two EP's released on Yuksek's Partyfine label, set the benchmark for his imitable club sounds and remixes for Lana Del Rey, Outkast, The Kooks and more propelled him to the world stage. 2019 looks set to take Jean Tonique even further into the stratosphere.

Following on from the incredibly well received reissue of Rick Clarke's sensuous Street Soul number 'Love With A Stranger', Local Records dust off the tapes once again to reissue a Brit Funk gem from Janet Kay.
Originally released back in '84, 'Eternally Grateful' encompasses the Brit Funk sound with a melting pot of styles that inspired the movement. Marrying Kay's R&B infused vocals with a British flavoured boogie funk, jazzed up horns and a dubby bass, there's a pop tinge that keeps things catchy and soulful in equal measure. Hold tight for those spiritual synth lines. Stratospheric stuff that will leave you feeling like you've been dancing in outer space.
Like all the Local Records back catalogue, 'Eternally Grateful' was produced by the label's mastermind John Collins. He nestles a dub version on the flip side, full of space echo sweetness and cascading drums - giving the funk bass centre stage, primed and ready to fuel dancefloors and capture spirits all over again.

It's been 12 months since Ramon Quezada's last solo EP as DJ Qu. "Heed The Message", then, is arguably long overdue. It's a pleasingly eclectic affair, with the A-side alone boasting both a funk-rock sampling deep house shuffler (the eccentric "May I Say") and a percussively wonky, undeniably druggy fusion of loose-limbed MPC drumming, sustained chords and woozy vocal samples. Over on the flip, Quezada continues to surprise, first by serving up the densely layered tribal drums and rolling jazz bass of "Picazon", then via the hazy, field recordings-laden dub techno/deep house fusion of atmospheric closing cut "Circumvent".

2 track vinyl compilation featuring the roots of modern dance music, on 180g heavyweight double LP. P&P was producer and Harlem hustler Peter Brown’s production company. He created some of the greatest moments in underground African American dance music, across a handful of labels in the 70s and 80s.
Due to his independent ethos his releases on imprints such as Heavenly Star, Sound Of New York, La Shawn, P&P and others would often disappear after a single low numbered pressing making them incredible hard to find on original pressing.
Tracks such as Mary Clarke’s ‘Take Me I’m Yours’, and the Fosters Jackson Group’s ‘Feel The Spirit’ have been championed by DJs such as Floating Points and Dimitri from Paris. Whilst the sheer rarity of some singles such as Clyde Alexander and Sanction’s ‘Got To Get Your Love’ and Louise Murray’s ‘Let’s Just Stay Away’ would set you back multiple hundreds of pounds to buy on original copies.

Melvo Baptiste steps up to mix the latest Glitterbox compilation, ‘Hotter Than Fire’featuring the upfront disco heat that has been setting off the dancefloor all summer at Glitterbox parties in New York, London and Ibiza. A strong contender for the hottest party on earth, Melvo has headlined Hï Ibiza for another record-breaking season this summer. ‘Hotter Than Fire’ channels the energy of a Glitterbox event, with this three-disc special exploring the best authentic house and disco sounds. Featuring highlights from the Glitterbox imprint such as The Shapeshifters’ gloriously instrumented ‘Life Is A Dancefloor’, enchanting dancefloors since its release and featuring CHIC lead vocalist Kimberly Davis, as well as brand-new heat like JKriv’s ‘Yo Love’ and KON’s remix of Qwestlife’s ‘Fever’, a track that features iconic US talent including Sugarhill Gang and Siedah Garrett. Transitioning through the decades, ‘Hotter Than Fire’ traces all the way from the 1978 soulful-disco cut ‘Gotta Keep Trying’ by Tenderness, Goldie Alexander’s 1981 ‘Show You My Love’ and the 1983 ‘Body Work’ (Vocal Mix) by Hot Streak on CD1 through to warm 90’s sounds on CD2 such as Masters At Work’s Club Dub of CHIC’s ‘Chic Mystique’ and Shay Jones ‘When Love Calls’ (E-Smoove's Late Night). Transitioning gradually into 2019, the compilation features upfront house and disco exclusively available on the compilation like Seamus Haji ‘Boogie 2nite’ (Dr Packer Extended Remix), Loods ‘Love’ and the Kormak remix of Low Steppa ‘You’re My Life’. Demonstrating what Glitterbox does best, ‘Hotter Than Fire’ re-creates the atmosphere of the party, with an abundance of disco, house and soulful sounds that embody the hands-in-the-air, euphoric, confetti-filled moments that the events areloved for.
