Black Country, New Road is a London-based 6-piece group formed mostly out of Cambridge consisting of: Charlie (Drums), Georgia (Violin), Isaac (Guitars/Vocals), Lewis (Saxophone), May (Synthesiser)and Tyler (Bass).
Stalwarts of the burgeoning Speedy-haven Brixton Windmill scene, they formed out of the ashes of a previous project in the Summer of 2018 with influences including Shellac, Oxbow and Georgia's experiences in Klezmer groups.

After hearing a few practice-room demos and live video footage online, Speedy's Pierre Hall saw one of their shows at London's Moth Club. 'It was incredible. Every song twisted and turned in ways you didn't expect, and lyrically, Isaac had this whole The Fall meets (William) Burroughs cut-ups thing going on, the lyrics seemed to tumble out of him - but they were clever and acerbic in equal measure. It was captivating to watch.'

'Athen's, France' is their first single proper, recorded as always with Speedy head-honcho Dan Carey in his Streatham studio. The resulting track is a journey in itself. Detailing 'a spectacular return to bad form; a romantic encounter; and a chronic fear of intercourse' - it changes direction at every corner with a vocal delivery that sounds like Steve Albini meets Jarvis Cocker.

It was also one of the fastest Speedy's ever put to tape - with the session taking place on a cold Sunday in January 2019 (the song having finished being written only the day before) - and being mixed / mastered by the Wednesday following. That urgency is captured in the delivery, a snapshot of a new and exciting band in the here and now.

Those of us with a penchant for musical and spiritual psychogeography - 'believers in the laws and specific effects of the geographical environment' - will locate the exact root of this anthem of high abandon in the building which stands on the corner of White Street and Cortland Alley in the Manhattan borough of New York. The neighbourhood: Tribeca. This is where the vibes will be felt the strongest.

Times were tough then, the late 1970's / early 1980's. The squares were being taken seriously again. Menacing horror-show bigotry was rife. Sound familiar And this was the place, home to the Mudd Club, that the post-punk art head freaks went to escape the crap and express themselves - create timelessness - flick the finger - look sharp - show off - have a bit of a laugh.

And dance their lives away.

Back to the present: It was inevitable that Andrew Weatherall would collaborate with audiobooks. They come from the same place. Trace their lineage and you're back in Tribeca. Anya Phillips is on the door. James Chance is on the stage. Lizzy Mercier-Descloux is on the dance floor. and Karen Finlay is looking pretty fucking dangerous. Again.

Weirdly, depressingly, the current political landscape is a mirror image of those times and the freaks are having to look out for themselves once again. This song is one for the freaks. For the outsiders. Its message is one of liberation.

And that message is: Lose your shit. Stay free. Dance your life away.

Quiet Signs is the journey of an artist stepping out of the darkened wings, growing comfortable as a solitary figure on a sprawling stage.

Jessica Pratt is not a loud performer. She does not have to be. In a club of a few hundred, even the bar staff are known to go quiet while she's on stage. Her third album, Quiet Signs, feels like a distillation of this power. The album leads off with 'Opening Night', a nod to Gena Rowlands' harrowing, brilliant performance in the John Cassavetes film of the same name, as well as to where this spare, beautiful collection of songs falls within the course of the California artist's career. Quiet Signs is also Pratt's first album fully recorded in a professional studio setting, her songs and guitar arrangements have been pared back to include only what is essential, while the home recorded haze of previous efforts parts to reveal the full scope of her vision. On the first single, 'This Time Around', Pratt hits on a profound, late-night clarity over just a couple of deep chords, evoking Caetano Veloso's casual coastal brilliance.

The album was written in Los Angeles and recorded at Gary's Electric in Brooklyn, NY over 2017/2018.

For its newest record, Public Release soars over the Atlantic and glides into Greece to convene with two brothers from Thessaloniki, Christos and Fotis Papadakis, for Cosmic Swimmer, a gentle, lilting sunbleached house escapade.

The 12-inch opens with their soft and cushy original mix of 'Cosmic Swimmer', a charmed layer cake of round, full-bodied hand drums, airy pads, and washed-out vocal harmonies. A breezy, wide-open endless groove that ambles along at a not-too- slow, not-too-fast Goldilocks pace that will easily keep you undulating on the floor or in your head. Another pair of brothers, the Soulwax boys, making a very rare, celebrated appearance here, take the reigns and fill out the arrangement by wrapping it all up in some stone-cathedral euphoric resonance and injecting it with their trademark finger-plucked bass struts. One of their top remixes ever Perhaps.

The hot potato is then passed to New York City's Kim Ann Foxman for her take, a more urgent and pressed affair that swaps the organic elements for jittery programmed percussion, strobed effects, and brittle synth licks, all the while somehow keeping the dusting of Balearic feel-good presence intact. Finally, Eric 'Dr. Dunks' Duncan jumps into the frame with a tough love acid- flecked interpretation that thrusts the record into peak-hour rave territories.

Spearheading the burgeoning DIY Leeds scene, 'Plastic Front' sees Treeboy & Arc release their first single of 2019, adding to the ever-growing stream of exciting singles they've released so far in their short time as a band. Opening with a jangling guitar riff, the track soon bursts into life as it crashes into a darker, more sinister tone.

'Plastic Front' came about after James from the band made a trip to Poland. He explains 'I visited Gdansk for a short but sweet 26 hour and 10 minute trip. I was on my way back to the airport and I saw someone crash going about 60mph on the hard shoulder of the motorway. My immediate thought was that they must be dead, but after 7-8 Polish men and myself running over to check, we found the man to be alive and ok, just in a lot of disbelief and confusion. People pushed the car off the road as I helped clear up broken bits of plastic and glass, then everyone just headed off as if nothing had happened.'

Speaking about where the lyrical inspiration came from, James explained 'When I was on the plane home I was more aware than usual of all of the images and constant warnings about what to do in the instance of the plane crashing. Whilst reading through it all I wrote the lyrics to Plastic Front as it all just felt like a pretty weird and odd experience.'

77:78, the new project from Aaron Fletcher & Tim Parkin, card-carrying members of the musical kaleidoscope that is The Bees, are releasing two genius Ashley Beedle remixes of Love Said (Let's Go), the latest track to be taken from their debut album, Jellies, which was released on Heavenly Recordings back in the summer.

On the flip of this limited edition (300) 12' is the original version and a glistening remix by new kids The Flying Mojito Brothers.

Originally released on cassette in the summer of 2016 on the Geographic North label, In Summer marks a turn for Jefre Cantu-Ledesma. Here we see him fully embrace the past, equipped with LinnDrum, chorus drenched guitar and rhythmic bass lines. At moments, In Summer feels like lost demos of Durutti Column jamming with The Cocteau Twins. But not to worry, Jefre still delivers doses of what we know him for - interspersed field recordings, tape manipulations, and free modular experiments to keep us on our toes.

Icons Karen O and Danger Mouse unveil their debut recording as a duo, 'Lux Prima,' today—listen here. The song, out today on BMG, is the first to be released from a forthcoming joint album.

'Lux Prima is the first song we wrote for the record,' says O. 'After making music for the past twenty years and embarking on making this record with Danger Mouse I knew a couple things: one was that the spirit of collaboration between us was going to be a pure one, and two was that the more I live the less is clear to me. When you create from a blurry place you can go places further than you've ever been. I think we both were excited to go far out.'

Taking inspiration from the original concept behind the founding of Saddle Creek, as an attempt to highlight our home city through music and art, we began the Document Series in 2017. Each release featured in the Document Series is comprised of an exclusive record featuring unreleased music from artists outside of the label's roster, along with a specially curated zine created by the artist. The sixth installment in the series is Communication b/w Parallel from Madison, WI based Disq.

As with most DE we will have stock early and will ship as soon as it arrives. SECOND LAYER was a side project of ADRIAN BORLAND and GRAHAM BAILEY, members of post punk band THE SOUND. The project was born from early punk band THE OUTSIDERS, which had both Graham and Adrian as members. Second Layer featured the voice and guitars of Adrian mixed with the bass and pioneering electronics of Graham. The music was bleak, detached, and desolate, but very beautiful. Honest songwriting and a harsh sonic backdrop set them apart from their peers. The band's first two singles were released by Tortch label. The first was Flesh As Property EP in 1979 and the second State Of Emergency EP in 1980. By 1981 Second Layer had found a home on London-based label Cherry Red and released their debut album World of Rubber in November of that year. Full of hard mechanical sounds produced by Adrian's guitars and Graham's homemade drum machines, the album actively engages the listener. Songs are manic and twisted, pervaded with haunting subterranean atmospheres. Adrian's anguished voice tackles lyrics that are politically charged and morbidly fixated. Metallic guitar riffs, moody basslines, and Wasp synthesizer beeps are set to the band's cache of processed tape loops. They are a homegrown electronic garage band that sit alongside their contemporaries Joy Division, Cabaret Voltaire and Public Image Limited. This deluxe 2xLP edition features the complete recorded output of Second Layer plus 5 unreleased demos from 1978-80. All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios. Each LP comes in an exact replica of the original metallic sliver and black jacket from the 1981 issue with a never seen before fold out poster made by the band in 1980 with liner notes, photos and press clippings. New York Trio Sunflower Bean announce a new EP titled 'King Of The Dudes'. To celebrate the announcement, they share the first single 'Come For Me' (premiered by Radio 1's Annie Mac as the 'Hottest Record In The World'). The EP, produced by Justin Raisen (Sky Ferreira, Charlie XCX, Angel Olsen) and released on January 25th, 2019, follows on from their second album in March 2018.

Following the release of Twentytwo in Blue, the trio completed a month-long UK and European tour with performances at Reading & Leeds and End of the Road festivals, as well as supporting Interpol in arenas across the US. In November 18 they return to the UK to play a further 12 shows, including their largest headline show to-date at EartH.

The debut album by Copenhagen-based noise rockers The Entrepreneurs is a potent exploration of modern rock.

Noise & Romance is a lavish experience from start to finish. The new limited edition EP by Zola Jesus sees Nika Roza Danilova revisiting a pair of songs from her acclaimed 2017 album, Okovi, alongside prolific composer and musician Johnny Jewel (Chromatics). In a nod to the maxi singles of the 1980s, the album features multiple remixed versions of the two songs, 'Ash to Bone' and 'Wiseblood.' The track 'Wiseblood (Johnny Jewel Remix)' is featured in the soundtrack to the film Beautiful Boy, directed by Felix Van Groeningen and starring Timothée Chalamet and Steve Carell.

In the last three years Nika Roza Danilova has gone from being an outsider, experimental, teenage noise-maker to a fully-fledged, internationally-celebrated, electronic-pop musician. It was a huge accomplishment, and, despite her age (young), her origins (mid-western, desolate), her accelerated scholastic achievements (high school and college were each completed in three years) and her diminutive physical size (4'11', 90 lbs), she has triumphed. She has emerged as a figurehead— a self-produced, self-designed, self-taught independent woman. Zola Jesus is not a singer, she is a musician. Zola Jesus is not a band, it is a solo project. That is not to say the people who have helped her along the way were not deeply important. Her irreplaceable live band (whose drummer Nick Johnson lends a hand on several tracks here) and her friend Brian Foote (who co-produced this album), in addition to the live string players who contribute here (Sean McCann, Ryan York), were all crucial in the process. Still, Nika is a woman who can command a room—any room—without needing a band, a stage, or even a microphone. Her voice is unmistakable; it cuts right to the core. Conatus is a huge leap forward in production, instrumentation and song structure. The definition of the title says it all: the will to keep on, to move forward. From thumping ballads to electronic glitch, no sound goes unexplored on her new record. It is an icy exploration in refined chaos and controlled madness, an effort to break through capability and access a sonic world that crumbles.

The Britpop era brought the world a bunch of great records, including Echobelly's second album On.

Cigarettes After Sex are an ambient pop group based out of Brooklyn NY, led by vocalist/songwriter Greg Gonzalez and are inspired by the likes of Cocteau Twins, Mazzy Star and the sound of early 60s records like the Paris Sisters.

The band became a word-of-mouth phenomenon, generating over 100 million views on YouTube for their exquisitely yearning, graceful pop noir - all without the support of a label. They partnered with
Partisan Records for their debut album, which was released in June 2017.
'Crush' was written and recorded in the same sessions as the album, however was previously unreleased. The B-side is recently released 'Sesame Syrup' (also taken form the album sessions). This 7' will be the first time either of the two tracks have ever been available physically.

Once the keyboard player in Soul Sister Dance Revolution and in his young years frontman of All Missing Pieces. After playing in bands since he was eleven years old, he is now a grown young man, ready to invite the world into his own. Son Mieux writes his songs in the after hours, which make his songs both intimate & alive. By combining folk, indie and electronic music, he manages to create a unique sound and to process the expressions of his personality in his music.

The past two years have been an accumulation of highlights for Son Mieux. Single 'Even' became 3FM Megahit, debut EP 'Vice Versa' (2016) was streamed more than 6 million times and the song 'Easy' was used under major advertising campaigns from ING, McDonalds and Deezer. The band toured the country with sold-out club shows, festivals such as Zwarte Cross and Where The Wild Things Are.

In 2017 and 2018 they took their time to write the debut album. With singles 'Hiding', 'Everyday' and 'Old Love', the debut album Faire de Son Mieux makes a more mature and fuller sound. 'Rehab Doll', recorded largely at Seattle's Steve Lawson Studios., bridges the gap
between the taut, punky energy of 'Dry As A Bone' and the bigger drums and thicker
riffs that were coming to dominate rock in the late 80s. This new edition of 'Rehab
Doll' includes a version of 'Swallow My Pride' recorded to 8-track at Endino's
Reciprocal Recording, which features a more accurate depiction of how the band
sounded when they played live. 'When I listen to these mixes, I think, 'This is how
we actually sounded - this is the kind of energy we had,'' says Shumway.
Green River's place in American music history is without question but these
recordings paint a more complete picture of the band - and of rock in the mid to late
80s, when punk's faster-and-louder ideals had begun shape-shifting into other ideas

You might know that Pauline de Tarragon was born in Avignon barely two decades ago. You might even be familiar with her natural gift for illustration and music...her magnetic aura... her crystal smooth vocals... and how this medley of talents led her to onscreen audiences (Nouvelle Star 2014) and readers (Le Cri de Zabou). Now discover (if you don't know) how she created the musical, visual world of Pi Ja Ma.

We could go into her obsession with bands like The Doors and Jefferson Airplane, but Pi Ja Ma's bewitching musical landscapes have composer and multi instrumentalist Axel Concato to thank. The melodies he composes for Pauline's vocals are tinged with an almost naive freshness which belies his solid experience, from Axel and The Farmers to My Bee's Garden - ex-Melody's Echo Chamber. Since meeting in 2015, their creative exchange... or joke slinging... has been never ending.

When you're comfortable with someone, the magic happens: Axel composes, tinkers and structures, while Pauline sings, laughs and draws as the mood takes her. As Pi Ja Ma, she recorded her first EP with Axel in 2016, aptly titled 'Radio Girl EP', which made a great impression in France, UK and on American college radio stations.

Since then, they've toured France and the UK and found their onstage musicians along the way: Clémence Lasme on bass and Carol Teillard d'Eyry on drums. Sometimes it's just the two of them, for example supporting Superorganism who snapped up the duo for their UK tour.

Songs from their first album Nice To Meet U were recorded in London, Rouen and Paris - composed and produced by Axel, often written in tandem with Pauline. But you'll know this already if you watched the first episode of the Pi Ja Ma Show on YouTube, called 'Draw my life' and directed by... Pauline of course. The album was then mixed in Paris by Antoine Gaillet and mastered by Chab.

Listening to Nice to Meet U evokes all the artists that have inspired Pi Ja Ma, floating by like clouds in a holiday sky: the Ronettes, the Beach Boys, Shocking Blue, Françoise Hardy...and modern contemporaries such as Broadcast and Stereolab. Nice To Meet U is a pop record, radically pop in its delicateness, its melodic twists, its slightly lush arrangements and its solar energy. It's a flurry of indie pop, alt rock and electro pop songs, sucked through a 60s straw. Bold but breezy tracks that feign innocence and are always intense, with the humour, grace and dream-like vibe to tackle sensitive subjects, from alienation and disappointing love stories to young girls' place in society and celebrity.
Vocals as fresh and warm as bracing wind, rhythms as sparkling as champagne, romantic ballads (By The River, You and I), dance floor hits (Pixies, Sylphs and Fairies, Ponytail, Radio Girl) and tropical safaris (Sugar Sugar), Pi Ja Ma's songs are evolving fantasies, intense daydreams where we lay back and step back in time to the 60s: between memory and possibility, as if between love affairs.

New project alert for this experienced duo with a deep history from playing Hammond organ for Robert Plant, releasing 12"s on MAW's Kenlou Records and playing weekly six hour vinyl DJ sets, with 20+ years experience WLC have come full circle for this diverse EP. "Give You More" is a MPC house groover with KDJ-esque jazz-funk loops and vocal sample chops while "Miami Rice & Peas" centres around Latin piano motifs. "Everybody's A Star" replays the classic Minnie Riperton "Inside My Love" chord progression but with added vocals and disco flavours and "Which Way Is Detroit" fuses broken beat, techno, live keys and electric bass with a pulsating breakbeat. Finally, the bouncy "Five Soul Chords" utilises some J Dilla swing combined with warm analogue synth programming. Highly recommended.

Deerhunter's near 15-year career, 'Why Hasn't
Everything Already Disappeared' was recorded in
several strategic geographic points across North
America and produced by the band, Cate LeBon,
Ben H. Allen III and Ben Etter.
Forgetting the questions and making up unrelated
answers, Deerhunter's eighth album is a science
fiction album about the present. Exhausted with
the toxic concept of nostalgia, they reinvent their
approach to microphones, the drum kit, the
harpsichord, the electromechanical and synthetic
sounds of keyboards. Whatever guitars left are
pure chrome, plugged straight into the mixing desk
with no amplifier or vintage warmth.

You Become' follows Lost Under Heaven's 2016 debut,

social commentary, 'Love Hates What You Become'
captures the Manchester-based audio/visual duo -
comprised of Dutch artist Ebony Hoorn and British
vocalist Ellery James Roberts - at their most musically
raw and visceral.
The band wrote the album in Manchester before
traveling to Los Angeles to record with producer John
Congleton, known for his Grammy-winning work with St.
Vincent, Swans, Explosions In The Sky and Sigur Rós.
Congleton also introduced the band to Swans drummer
Thor Harris, who plays on the record. 'We were without
a drummer or a real band,' explains Ellery. 'I just
concentrated on writing the songs rather than making a
sound. We turned up in LA with that as our starting
point, this collection of Guitar & Piano demos that I'd
sent through.'
Those demos included some of the most accomplished
songwriting of his career to date, such as momentous
album closer 'For The Wild'. 'I started writing that song
years ago almost as a pastiche of trying to write real
this rock 'n' roll saviour,' he reminisces. 'The rock 'n' roll
revolutionary feels such a culturally irrelevant cliché
now, we're living in a mechanised world seemingly
indifferent to the longings of the human soul.'
