Benjamin John Power of Fuck Buttons' solo excursions as Blanck Mass culminated earlier this year in the excellent double LP, Dumb Flesh. One of the best album cuts was "No Lite," which is reimagined here by the legendary Genesis Breyer P-Orridge (Psychic TV, Throbbing Gristle) with the help of Timothy Leary's dreamachine and a sample of a "weird old English penny whistle." Genesis knew intuitively that those recordings, made over 30 years ago, would mesh well with the BPM of "No Lite," and the result is this incredible remix. This one-sided, white-label 12" presents her take on the track as a strictly limited, vinyl-only edition of 500.
Power said of the project: "With her being a hugely important innovator who constantly challenges pop culture, I was very excited at the prospect of Genesis Breyer P-Orridge working on a remix of 'No Lite'. I had a feeling that it would have been approached from an interesting angle and the results do not disappoint."

Buffalo Brothers are the 9-piece funk sensation currently exploding out of the Manchester music scene's creative melting pot. Their debut album, Fresh From The Horn, combines thunderous grooves and blistering horn lines with heavy funk, jazz and afrobeat flavours, and has already earned the approval of UK funk aficionados Craig Charles and Huey Morgan.
"I'm a massive fan of this Manchester outfit - they've made one cracking album!" - Craig Charles, Funk and Soul Show, BBC 6 Music
As well as attracting the attention of Craig Charles, appearing at his live club night at Manchester's Band On The Wall and being regularly played on his Radio 2 and 6 Music shows, Buffalo Brothers have been busy increasing their following with a number of high profile appearances across the UK, including at Kendal Calling Festival, supporting Huey Morgan at London's Blues Kitchen, and opening the 20th Manchester Jazz Festival to glowing reviews.
Their live performances featuring guest vocal performances have been overwhelming club and festival audiences for the past year and the band have spared no effort in concentrating this high-energy cocktail onto their first full-length studio release.

Recorded one track at a time at Guitar Center, completely
in secret, Apprentice Destroyer's debut Glass Ceiling
Universe transcends its intriguing concept to highlight a
hyperactive and omnivorous talent within.
These wide-ranging, kaleidoscopic instrumental compositions
veer from the disorientingly complex to the achingly
and delicately beautiful, all the while maintaining a
metallic, misanthropic edge. It's almost as if computers
were playing to each other across the sales floor, laughing
at the puny humans attempting to create harmonics in air
when they can do so perfectly in the vacuum of binary.
Glass Ceiling Universe is lifestyle music for all the cyborg
assassins out there, and it's out on Castle Face Records.

One-take ambient instrumental travels, composed in strict committee by the trio of Kevin Blagg, William Suran, and Dante Carfagna. Recorded spontaneously in rural Arkansas, bulging sub-woofers lope through fissures of skeletal banjo and pitched down pedal steel, while delicately arranged basins of synth and guitar reverberate, providing a steady stream of granular epiphanies. Utterly faded, yet still possessing crystalline clarity, these twelve songs continually attain summits rarely reached within the span of four-minute transmissions.

The Stairs were truly one of the great-lost bands of the early Nineties, championed by Elvis Costello, Paul Weller and many other luminaries, they influenced (along with the La's), a whole new generation of musicians including The Coral & The Zutons).
They released little, apart from a few singles, one of these being the unforgettable cult classic: 'Weed Bus'- and their celebrated psyched up, debut LP (Go!Discs) : 'Mexican R'n'B'. (a triumph of the soul!)
The Viper Label proudly presents: 'The Great Lemonade Machine in the Sky', a collection of previously unreleased recordings all thought to be lost but recently rediscovered in a relative's attic!
A heady mixture of Psychedelia, Motown, Garage Rock 'n' Soul, R 'n' B that confirms their credentials- not just in the great canon of Liverpool bands but also as an essential part of British Underground Rock.

LTM presents an expanded CD edition of Make It Loud, the third album by Glasgow indiepop pioneers The Wake, originally issued by Sarah Records in 1990.
Recorded after the group moved on from Factory Records, Make It Loud was produced by the band with Duncan Cameron (Teenage Fanclub, BMX Bandits). Along with core members Caesar (guitar and vocals), Carolyn Allen (keyboards and vocals) and Steven Allen (drums), the sessions also featured James Moody and Matthew Drummond of Sarah cohorts The Orchids.
The new 2015 remaster includes two bonus tracks taken non-album single Crush the Flowers / Car Brain, issued on Sarah in 1989. 'Here is the music we made during and after that sudden period of transition from Factory to Sarah,' says Caesar. 'Spiky protest songs, unfettered pop satires, direct and personal, far removed from everything, travelling alone. Glasgow. Manchester. Bristol. There and back again.'

This compilation is a sweet snapshot of a sophisticated sector of young Japanese pop music, circa 2014. Originally released as a series of web-only EPs on Dai Ogasawara's Ano(t)raks label, Light Wave features artists born in the 1990s who have been strongly influenced by the melodic, sophisticated Japanese "City Pop" music of the 70s and 80s, as exemplified by revered names such as Tatsuro Yamashita, Yumi Arai and Tin Pan Alley. Also inspirational is the "Shibuya Style" pop of the 90s, artists like Pizzicato Five and Cornelius. But whereas these earlier artists were living in boom times and recording in luxurious studios financed by major record companies, these young artists have been born into a glum economic era with a decimated recording industry. Nevertheless, through the magic of sheer willpower and surprisingly assured musical and self-production skills, they make joyous, lighthearted and refreshingly refined pop music. With strong melodies and inspired arrangements, this fresh new wave of City Pop is perfect summer music, all year-round. Newly remastered to EM Records' exacting standards, this collection shows the genesis of a promising new generation of pure pop music in Japan."

Includes bonus tracks! Some of us may still be familiar with Canadian Pop singer Terry Jacks who released an utterly successful yet greasy ballad called 'Seasons in the sun' way back in 1974. It became an instant hit and it definitely possesses a depth and quality most pop tune writers and producers would go crazy for. But that was just a later milestone of Terry's career as pop musician. Years before in the mid to late 60s he found his soulmate in his later wife Susan and following a series of live performances formed a beautiful band named THE POPPY FAMILY with her and a few like minded souls. What we talk about here is definitely the contemporary pop music of 1969 with a few turns into psychedelic fields. There are lush arrangements with accessible rhythms, string and brass sections to boost up the heart warming, gentle and joyful vocal melody of Mrs. Jacks on the opening track 'That's where I went wrong' and still you can feel the same sense of melancholy Terry Jacks spiced up his later evergreen hit tune with. 'Free from the city' is clothed in a garment of Indian inspired sitar harmonies and drones, has a rather enchanting lead melody and a groovy, polyrhythmic fundament. One helluva acid pop tune that should have been a dancefloor smasher back in the day at each psychedelic club. A gentle Latin beat, sweet instrumental arrangements and Susan Jacks' haunting vocals make up 'Beyond the clouds', a mellow dance where couples can get close to each other drowning within each other's souls. Despite that it the overall mood is still a bit melancholic and desperate. Well, Terry Jacks takes over the lead vocals and the next song 'A good thing lost' comes as a short and sweet country rock tune a band like THE BYRDS would have been proud of. Elements of French chanson, a waltzing rhythm, another deep and contemplative vocal melody sung with a burning passion and once more these lush and fluffy arrangements build the fifth track 'You took my moonlight away'. Up to this point we have experienced several styles popular at the time the album has been recorded and we will certainly switch in between all these for the next couple of songs until we get to No. 12, 'Of cities and escapes'. Two outstanding tracks for the meantime are 'There's no blood in bone', track 6, a hot blooded, moody psychedelic pop song with fuzz guitar and mellotron lines supporting Susan telling another rather tragic tale and the mind-blowing 'Happy island' with its tabla rhythms and sitar lines which remind you of classical Indian ragas. Still 'Happy island' remains a Western society pop tune with a little psychedelic edge and comes as uplifting as the name suggests. This album has this timeless vibe of beauty many of the late 1960s records have. It is accessible enough for fans of pop and even country rock who would rather go for Doug Sahm and his SIR DOUGLAS QUINTETT than for JEFFERSON AIRPLANE, THE BOW STREET RUNNERS or THE SHOCKING BLUE but even their followers might find enlightenment in this album, which is rich on beautiful songs. A great discovery for 60s music lovers. Grab your copy while you can.

Playing things safe has never been The Drink's philosophy. Throughout the trio's evolution, their gloriously off-kilter guitar pop melodies and lyrical curiosities have commanded attention - and on brand new album Capital, they're pushing the boundaries even further, eschewing meticulous planning in favour of instinct across even more wondrously intriguing tracks. Capital can mean a lot of things' explains Galway born singer Dearbhla Minogue. "But it always has a gravity wherever it crops up. It brings to mind subtle or intangible force.'
Taking their celebration of controlled chaos out of the city (the trio all now reside in London), and into the Yorkshire countryside, Capital was recorded in a converted pig farm just outside Sheffield and is the next intrepid step in The Drink's defiant rolling trajectory. The band's 'debut' album Company was compiled from their first three EPs, received praise across the music press and set off twelve months of touring that culminated in a BBC 6music session for Marc Riley, support slots with Toro Y Moi and invites to the Green Man and End Of The Road festivals this summer. Whilst most would put writing a follow-up on hold to fulfil their live duties, that simply wasn't an option: We wanted to move on fast after Company, without that momentum-sapping two-year gap between albums,' explains bassist David Stewart.
With drummer Daniel Fordham completing the line-up, if there's one thing Capital has, it's momentum. Through skewed time signatures and rapid key changes, whether drawing influences from krautrock (see the hypnotic 'Like A River' and 'No Memory's motorik drones) to girl group harmonics (Dearbhla's cherubic falsetto on 'Roller' and 'I'll Never Make You Cry'), time on tour has given the trio the chance to develop their impressive sound, giving way to a natural confidence and chemistry that has found its way into Capital's song-writing. 'Potter's Grave', in particular, highlights the album's wonderfully strange collision between beautiful fragments of melody and lyrical imagery.
With a style that deftly evokes feeling over understanding, Dearbhla's lyrics provide emotion to an uninhibited stream of unconsciousness, whether conjuring up references to dreams and sleep, or to nature, inspired by the folk songs she used to listen to and the poetry of Ted Hughes, Dylan Thomas, and her great uncle Frank Thompson. I wrote 'No Memory's' phrase 'dreaming of a green field' after a flashbulb dream about the green fields back home... but I think a lot of my lyrical references to nature are allegorical to how far away from their own nature people have to behave now, in order to survive.'
Mixed and mastered by Tobias Warwick Jones, Capital exhibits the band's appreciation of artists from The Modern Lovers to Rory Gallagher. The result is a record that transcends its predecessor, bolstered by playful danceability. Take the disco-infused 'You Won't Come Back At All', born from a night out dancing in Whitechapel, whilst lead track 'The Coming Rain' is the result of years spent listening to Kenyan Ayub Ogada. Elsewhere the nervy blues guitar sound of 'Hair Trigger' and 'Like A River' are driven by what Dearbhla calls a 'got-to-catch-my-train feel'. We only found the right guitar sound about an hour before I had to leave for my train and I wanted to record as many tracks as possible with that sound. It was a bit down to the wire but it's given the record an energy we wouldn't have otherwise had' she says.
Between them, the band members have other projects, Dearbhla continues to play in The Wharves and Shield Your Eyes, whose guitarist Stef Ketteringham has hugely influenced Dearbhla's playing. Daniel has recently collaborated with award-winning short-story writer Stuart Evers, creating soundscapes inspired by the writer's latest collection, Your Father Sends His Love.
The band has shape-shifted as a sort of evolving unit into something which is now a bit less cerebral and more instinctive. We always knew it was more than the sum of its parts from the beginning, but I don't think any of us expected to be improvising takes in the studio.' Showcasing Dearbhla's beguiling lyrics, Capital is the sound of The Drink harnessing their groove and moving their sound to new, unexplored places.

Opening with the subtle rumble of early morning Chinatown, a hazy instrumental sharpens into focus with languid guitars, gently welcoming you into a dream of Kennedy's creation. The summery groove and pop majesty of 'It's Alright' soon sends you spinning into infinity, cares eased by the warm tones of chiming guitars, while Beth de Cent's smokey vocals come together in perfect harmony with Kennedy's. 'Andy' treats you to a yearning tale of forbidden love, packed with homoerotic overtones so full blooded they'd make Morrissey blush like a young Caligula, while the marbled melodies of 'Broken Light' come on in nostalgic ripples and waves of sepia-tinged beauty. 'Let You Down' finds Kennedy's voice sounding better than ever, detailing visceral regret over a full bodied groove which marries the baggy backbeat of his hometown with the sultry exoticism of Thai-funk. Opening the B-side with a masterful subtlety, synth led instrumental 'Midnight Pt.2' sees Kennedy taking us for a moonlit stroll by the ocean before 'Dana' ushers in the dawn with the greatest X-Files inspired song ever written (sorry Cerys). The antithesis of over-serious hipster cool, the earnestly emotional lyrics, anthemic chords and shimmering should be enough to prompt John Hughes to rise again and make a much needed sequel to The Breakfast Club. 'Disappear' finds Kennedy and drummer Matt Booth drinking in the cosmic vintage of Düsseldorf '72, as their chiming West Coast guitars are joined by celestial keys, head nodding bass grooves and a motorik rhythm. 'Clouds' draws us back into the haze as Kennedy's multi-tracked vocals gently melt into the swirl of flanged guitar, while 'Avoid The Light' closes the LP with a plea to stay in the dreamworld just a little longer.

BRAND NEW album from legendary LA firestarters, The Icarus Line. Their third full length release for Agitated (their eigth album in total), following on from their imperious return to the fray in 2013 with the much lauded release of Slave Vows, followed up by its companion album release Avowed Slavery in 2014.
Recorded and arranged live as a group in Cardamones studio, Valley Recording Company in Burbank, the sessions were very private and conducive to conjuring, the frontman describes. If you are lucky, you can capture something before it dies. I feel like all great music is a fleeting inspiration. You only have so much time to capture it before it either turns into routine or it turns its back on you.
The album features a guest appearance from legendary outsider artist Joe Coleman who helped coin the album title. Also appearing is Bad Seed / Grinderman/ Dirty Three band leader Warren Ellis who helped pen the track "Bedlam Blue" with Cardamone.
Art work for All Things Under Heaven was found during the making of the record. Veteran news photographer Randy Taylor was receiving attention for some works of his that were created out of destruction. During the Sandy hurricane his archive was flooded and many of his photos were destroyed. The pictures that would make up the records sleeve were simply a document of a 4th of July cookout but after the waters of Sandy they became the american dream in a car crash with mother nature. The perfect visual to compliment a document about a melted american dream.
All Things Under Heaven packs the kind of swagger, raunch & ascent that would make Iggy Stooge and Sun Ra proud parents. It is a record that expands the vocabulary of what rock music can be without sacrificing the critical spirit that makes it Rock N Roll. The Icarus Line have summoned up the demons from the past, paid their homage and taken the sound in an entirely new direction; because this band are never ones to be caught on their knees. The album is a sprawling sonic landscape that has a timeless quality about it as it traverses between low valleys, towering skyscrapers and all the dirty alleyways that connect them. Its a record that's as sprawling as the city of Los Angeles to which The Icarus Line have always called home. Its a fuck you to the bite size society that has become music consumption. Life is bigger than that. And just like LA, this is a record that from the opening hollow echo swallowed pounding drums of Ride Or Die to the final free jazz funeral lullaby of Sleep Now is all its own world.
The Icarus Line have been deep in the rock n roll trenches since their debut album Mono in the late 90s, yet sound more significant now than ever. Over the years The Icarus Line have proved to be one of the most exciting and unpredictable live bands around, again and again. Their performances are explosive, dangerous and sexy all at the same time.
Joe Cardamone slanks in a room like some sick fuck who actually knows how to live on the street, instead of pretending that he still does, writes Permanent Midnight author Jerry Stahl.

After the early singles and radio sessions were compiled and released as Tommy and the follow up Ukrainian album, the band signed to RCA and released their major labels debut album Bizarro and Seamonsters. Then instead of 'that difficult third album' they took the unusual step in 1987 of releasing one limited edition single a month. This had never been done before by any band, only the legendary Elvis Presley, so it was a brave step. But this was the Wedding Present and under Gedges leadership the plan was a great success.
The A side for each single would be an original composition and the B side a cover version, which gave the band the opportunity to put their unique stamp on songs and experiment with some very interesting choices. They took on Isaac Hayes 'Theme From Shaft', David Bowies 'Chant Of The Ever Circling Skeletal Family' from his Ziggy inspired Diamond Dogs album. They also looked to more commercial pop material of Altered Images 'Think That It Might' and Bow Wow Wows 'Go Wild In The Country'. Each were given the Gedge treatment that Melody Maker once described as equivalent to 'sandpapering your ears'.

Strictly Ltd Edition (500) Vinyl Full-Colour Deluxe Package. With one-off digital download card & Poster (Poster with Initial Sales)
All new original artwork by highly regarded Sardinian collagist/artist Andrea Floris.
Sometimes it happens and no one can tell you why. A great—nay—an excellent band comes around and releases some stellar music, only to be forgotten in the overly-huge Bible of Rock History. (Pop Matters 2007)
Following the highly acclaimed recent release on CTR 'Perfect Motion'-Jon Savage's Secret History of Second-Wave Psychedelia 1988-93 (A Lauren Laverne BBC 6Music Compilation Album of the Week) comes a limited vinyl version of another previously very well received compilation on CTR. However, this album is cut from a different musical cloth, rooted firmly in the Manchester Post-Punk scene.
The Tokyo Times wrote of the original CD release in 2007:
'Manicured Noise possessed the kind of arty, angular sound (and asymmetrical haircuts) that so many bands of the current moment strive for. '
Manicured Noise were Manchester's prime Art/Post-Punk-Funk act. They're woven deeply into the legendary Factory/Russell Club scene of the late seventies. Their friends and peers included the celebrated artist Linder Mulvey and the godhead Joy Division (with whom they shared a rehearsal space)
This restructured &, restyled release features all-new artwork from Sardinian, Cagliari based, collagist and artist Andrea Floris. The album gathers together, the first time on vinyl for most of the tracks, almost all of their recordings including their two singles for Pre/Charisma Records, a BBC session and other archive material.
This enigmatic act formed in Manchester in 1978, the very early days of the band remain a mystery. Given their name by the aforemementioned prime Manc scenester and friend of Morrissey, Linder, the group peddled a form of spiky and angular Jazz Punk. Jeff Noon, acclaimed sci-fi writer (Vurt) was an early member of the group, adding to the particular retro-futurist edge they displayed, forged in the early 80's musical melting pot that was the Hulme estate.
Inspired by New York, Television, Ornette Coleman, Talking Heads, August Darnells' Machine, French Soundtracks and Disco Chic-along with a nod to Northern Soul and Moroder, the band cut a singular groove. Early hours inspiration from 70's cop and Kung-Fu soundtracks were incorporated, a good 10 years or more before Massive Attack and Portishead did the same. In doing so, Manicured Noise created a sound that's still difficult to pin down.
'Factory have expressed an interest in the Distractions, the Negatives and current musicians' favourites, Manicured Noise. (Ask Vic Goddard, the Banshees; Wire what they think of M Noise. Politely of course'. (Paul Morley NME Dec 1978)
Guitarist and later MN frontman Steven Walsh was an ex member of the Flowers of Romance, a legendary pre-Pistols vehicle for a certain Sid Vicious, and also various members of the Slits and Banshees.
A stringer for the NME and post-punk zine Zig-Zag, Steven bought an experimental and funky ethos to the band.
'Primitive funk learned by copying Chic singles played at 33 rpm' (Simon Reynolds-On manicured Noise in 'Rip it Up')
Faith, one of two highly acclaimed 1980 Pre singles boasts a tough Northern backbeat acknowledging the Manchester debt. A BBC session followed.
Julian Cope, the Arch Drood himself, suggested recently that Manicured Noise were fit for a residency at the fictitious Opposite Club which features in his latest novel 'One Three One '. They'd be playing 'Faith' no doubt, alongside Uri Gallagher and Spackhouse Tutti.
Almost written out of the Manchester story, this compilation will hopefully redress the balance, telling the tale of a band that were on the fringes of the Factory Records elite, (they generally shunned the Manchester scene inhabiting their own niche) but always creating their own script for the future.
