The Apostles - Banko Woman

The Apostles

Banko Woman

12inchPMG085LP
PGM Rec.

  • A1: Banko Woman
  • A2: Friend Today Enemy Tomorrow
  • A3: Mr Too Know
  • B1: Faith, Luck & Music
  • B2: Yours Sincerely
  • B3: Disciple Funk

Heaven sent from Nigeria's tumultuous east, The Apostles have been preaching a particular blend of funky psychedelic soul/rock fusion for over forty years. On Banko Woman they threw a little Afrobeat into the mix, creating an Afro-Funk disco bomb that has been energising dance floors ever since. The title track finds the band at the height of their powers. Stung by the acclaim Felix 'Feladay' Odey got for the searing guitar lead on 'Never Too Late', Walton Arungwa is a man possessed, trading licks with keyboardist Benjamin Nnamdi Davidson and sounding all the world like a Nigerian Carlos Santana. The players in the rhythm section, Henry Asu Tandu, Chicago Nwoha and Harrison Mba, are tight and relentless, keeping their heads so everyone else can lose theirs. Of course, you don't stay successful as long as The Apostles without giving the audience what they want. On Banko Woman, that's a country song for mum and dad ('Mr Too Know') and a couple of earnest, plaintive tracks for emotional challenged chaps to dedicate to their girlfriends ('Yours Sincerely' and 'Friend Today, Enemy Tomorrow'). You also finish on a high. 'Disciple Funk', is almost a religious experience, an 8-minute long instrumental wig that will have you flipping the record back to side one and starting all over again. - Peter Moore

Shamrock - African Music By African People Lp

Shamrock grew up in the township called 'Kwathema', In the east of Johannesburg. He has being crazy for music since he was a young child, and at primary school he sang as the soloist in the choir.

Everyone now knows that South Africa is the house music capitol of the world! Most young upcoming producers look up the American and European producers, But Shamrock's sound is standing out from the rest, as he's been digging into his African roots to come up with his own style of music, working with mainly South African musicians, only using the computer to record the audio.

On this album he's also featured international musicians Han Litz,Flutist from the Netherlands, Asali, vocalist from Kenya, Andy Compton, from the UK, and Jimmy Gabriel on Sax from Nigeria.

His first releases came out on a South African label in 2014.

He's well known in South Africa for his live guitar shows, normally jamming with DJ's. This is how he first met Andy Compton, and secured the Peng connection.

Shamrock was a main writing contributor for the fantastic 'Sowetan Onesteps' project, and after that success he knew the home for his album would be on Peng, which offers his sound to a worldwide audience

So here it is! Enjoy the African rhythms and sun drenched music!.

Professor Rhythm - Bafana Bafana

Professor Rhythm is the production moniker of South African music man Thami Mdluli. Throughout the 1980's, Mdluli was member of chart-topping groups Taboo and CJB, playing bubblegum pop to stadiums. Mdluli became an in-demand producer for influential artists (like Sox and Sensations, among many others) and in-house producer for important record companies like Eric Frisch and Tusk. During the early '80s, Mdluli projects usually featured an instrumental dance track. These hot instrumentals became rather popular. Fans demanded to hear more of these backing tracks without vocals, he says, so Mdluli began to make solo instrumental albums in 1985 as Professor Rhythm. He got the name before the recordings began, from fans, and positive momentum from audiences and other musicians drove him to invest himself in a full-on solo project. It was the era just before the end of apartheid and house music hadn't taken over yet. There wasn't instrumental electronic music yet in South Afric a. As the '80s came to a close, that was about to change. Professor Rhythm productions mirror the evolution of dance music in South Africa. They grew out of the bubblegum mold - which itself stems from band's channeling influences like Kool & the Gang and the Commodores - into something based on music for the club. His early instrumental recordings First Time Around and Professor 3 mostly distilled R&B, mbaqanga and bubblegum grooves into vocal-less pieces for the dance floor. Musically, these were a success and commercially the albums all went gold. There were countless bubblegum albums flooding the marketplace, with nearly disposable vocalists backed by mostly similar-sounding rhythm tracks. Most of the lyrical content was light and apolitical. But the keyboards used formed the musical basis for what would come next. By the time Professor 4 and this recording Bafana Bafana - the name references South Africa's national soccer team - were released in the mid-1990s, k waito had fully emerged. Access to instruments and freedom of expression helped its rise in influence among youth. According to Mdluli, "Once Mandela was released from prison and people felt more free to express themselves and move around town, kwaito was becoming the thing." Lyrically, kwaito championed the local township lingo while adapting "international music," house music, into the local context. "International Music," as house music and early kwaito were interchangeably known, in many ways reflects the sounds coming from America. But South Africans made it their own. Today, the largest part of the music industry is occupied by house music and its relatives.

- 180 GRAM AUDIOPHILE VINYL
- FIRST PRESSING OF 750 NUMBERED COPIES ON ORANGE VINYL

A former student of Jamaica's famed Alpha Boys' school, Rico Rodriguez served his musical apprenticeship playing trombone in some of the island's most celebrated orchestras and bands. A spell at Count Ossie's camp in Wareika Hills introduced him to the Rasta faith and a new approach to music, which he later introduced to his studio work.

In 1961, he emigrated to London, where he became a regular on growing the UK West Indian music scene, cutting numerous sides for every Jamaican music maker of note, including Trojan's in-house producer, Robert Thompson aka Dandy.

Dandy duly paired the trombonist with Britain leading reggae group, The Rudies, with the collaboration spawning an array of singles and the immensely popular album, Blow Your Horn, released by Trojan late in 1969.

Unavailable in any format for over 20 years, this highly sought-after boss reggae album is finally available once more, with the discovery of the long lost of the original Trojan master tapes ensuring it sounds better than ever!

Available in a limited first pressing on 'Trojan' orange vinyl!

Archiver & Matteo Boyero - Instrumental Thursdays

Instrumental Thursdays:
i&i Musik and Wahever Records present an album of quirky and eclectic instrumentals written and produced by Archiver and Matteo Boyero. It was recorded over the last two years during regular Thursday sessions at Matteo's studio in Homerton. The album draws inspiration from the diversity of musical genres and cultures present in London, crossing borders and genres, spanning Dub, African, Electronic, International, Hip Hop, House, Tropical, Techno and everything in-between. The sunny artwork made by Risa, captures the vibe of Instrumental Thursdays, and gives an idea of the wide variety of instruments and effects used throughout, from drum machine to steel drum, saxophone to synthesiser, passing through reel-to-reel tape, springs and delays.

About the artwork:
I wanted to create a sleeve that reflected the album, it's sounds and the Thursday sessions that created it. I hung out in the studio with them, did some drawings, took some photographs and used these as a starting point. To me, the album sounds a bit tropical, with some cosmic vibes, slightly twisted samples, hints of Hip Hop, Techno, Dub and some African influences chucked in for good measure. The studio and recording process was all very 'organic', with many of the parts being recorded in live so I kept the drawings spontaneous and fun and used positive, vibrant colours. During the creation of this album, Matteo and Archiver both adopted cats who equally seem to enjoy hanging out in the studio, so we decided to stick them on the cover too! - Risa,

Bryte X Gafacci - I Like Your Girlfriend

Summer's here! Ransom Note Records continue their search for the finest dance music from Planet Earth with a carnival-ready curveball of a new release, the sleazy, playful Ghanaian Afro-Ghetto-Techno-Pop that is Bryte's word-of-mouth classic I Like Your Girlfriend. Originally surfacing on a couple of YouTube dance videos, the shitty quality video rip of Bryte's bizarro lyrics leaping over Gafacci's impeccable grime-meets-afrohouse beat has been a much-loved secret weapon in the sets of DJs that know for a minute now - Bok Bok, Mixpak and Gang Fatale have all supported heavily. Coming from Accra's booming Azonto dance scene, where tracks are knocked out in makeshift home-built studios then swapped through social media apps on smartphones, a proper release of I Like Your Girlfriend has long remained a holy grail. Now, after months of searching, several Western Union transfers, hundreds of WhatsApp messages and no lack of determination, Ransom Note have finally managed to legitimately sign the track, and are all set to give a modern classic the 12' release it deserves - making history with what is quite possibly the first Azonto track to be released on vinyl. Alongside Bryte's crazy vocal version, the release features the original beat from producer Gafacci - its bouncing techy minimalism carving a unique path between techno, house and UK funky that defies genre with glee. Vinyl buyers get a special bonus, Bryte's acapella, coming in at 128 bpm, is the perfect mixing tool.

Derek Gripper - One Night On Earth

3

Matsuli Music presents an album of kora interpretations that astonished John Williams into saying he thought it was 'absolutely impossible until I heard Derek Gripper do it'. When Kora maestro Toumani Diabate heard these recordings he disbelievingly asked his host and producer Lucy Duran to confirm that she had actually seen one guitarist play this music on just one guitar. Recorded at an all-night session Gripper's guitar magically conjures anew this centuries-old African musical heritage. One Night on Earth: Music from the Strings of Mali, captures Gripper's extraordinary six-string interpretation of Toumani Diabate's 21-string Kora compositions. Gripper's 'guitar has found the Kora-playing spirit, he captures the magic bound up in the way it is played', says Williams, who has invited Gripper back a second time to collaborate in 'The John Williams Series' at the Globe Theatre, London in June 2015. For more than ten years Derek Gripper has produced some of South Africa's most extraordinary musical works, fusing the country's disparate creative traditions with styles from around the world. His music draws on European classical traditions, avant-garde Brazilian works, Malian kora works, Cape Town's folk styles such as goema and vastrap, and Indian classical music, all the while synthesising them into a style uniquely his own. Tim Panting writing in the Classical Guitar Magazine describes this as '...one of the most atmospheric recordings of guitar music, of any kind, that I have heard.' And in music journalist Richard Haslop's words 'Anybody wondering why one would want to hear a South African guitarist play this music when the incomparable original recordings are available, need only listen to this album.' Originally only available on CD, Matsuli Music is proud to be releasing this breakthrough album on heavyweight vinyl in a deluxe limited edition with accompanying sleeve-notes from Derek Gripper.

Toto Bono Lokua - Toto Bono Lokua

  • 4: L'endormie
  • 5: Flutes
  • 6: The Front
  • 7: Na Ye
  • 8: Help Me
  • 9: Stesuff
  • 10: Where I Came From
  • 11: Seven Beats
  • 12: Lisanga

Ahead of the release of their second album in 2018, the fi rst album of Toto Bona Lokua is fi nally released on vinyl for the fi rst ti me. At the origin of this project, in 2004 the common desire for putti ng this together, a simple meeting, for the space of a session, just to see' what we can do together, what we have to say to each other, to exchange, to share , what we can reveal to each other that we didn't imagine we possessed. In short, stripping ourselves bare. Being true, here and now, with no greasepaint - being equitable. Heart to heart. A cappella.

Thus, three voices that are equal, three singular careers, three quite distinct universes with one thing in common, like a nutriti ve sun, more or less distant : Africa. Sensiti ve, carnal, coloured, alive and lived by Richard and Lokua - the former from the Cameroon, born on a plateau named Adamaoua, between the savannah and the virgin forest, the latt er from the Congo - both linked by the might of the Congo river sweeping along the myths and reality of a ti meless Earth - and the experience of exile, the discovery of ultra-contemporary cosmopolitanism tinted with the nostalgia that belongs to diasporas. Inherited, confi scated for Gerald, a Caribbean born in Paris, carried away in turn on the great drive of his deported ancestors, in the vanguard, despite himself, of this new, crossbred world that is to come, already here, there and elsewhere... No culture shocks between these three then, but rather a soft , insidiouss contagion, leaving only the delicious trace of an ineff able sensuality..

Saz'iso - At Least Wave Your Handkerchief At Me

Mesmerizing arabesques & heart-breaking laments from Southern Albania.

A thrilling Introduction to Saze, one of Europe's richest but most overlooked musics. Co-produced by Joe Boyd (Pink Floyd, Nick Drake. R.E.M.) & recorded by Grammy winning engineer Jerry Boys (Buena Vista Social Club). Gorgeous, spirited and deeply moving.

"Albanian saze is a haunting, often melancholy style that features clarinet, violin and complex iso-polyphonic singing that combines at least two melody lines. This powerful music is little known outside southern Albania, but that could change thanks to Saz'iso, a group of virtuoso musicians who came together with help from Joe Boyd, a producer who has worked with everyone from Nick Drake and Fairport Convention to Cubanismo and Songhai." - The

Guardian

"Boyd wanted to record Saz'iso's music as though it were a Blue Note session or Deutche Grammophon string quartet, and their debut is refreshingly free

of the hi-def faux intimacy that plagues world releases" - The Wire

"Why not give yourself a break from the unending cavalcade of modern

high-speed insanity, and rest up with this album of deep soul from Southern

Albania." -Ry Cooder

Ninos Du Brasil - Vida Eterna

Nico Vascellari and Nicolò Fortuni come out to play in the dark on their 3rd and deadliest LP as Ninos Du Brasil, taking their fascinations with ritual musics - from Brazilian Afro-Latin tribal rhythms to library music and freezing Scandinavian BM - deep into the festering undergrowth of their shared, exotic aesthetic.
Where the cover of their first LP for Hospital Productions, Novos Mistérios (2014), depicted a naked man covered by a leopard pelt, Marvin Gaye Chatwynd's oil painting of a screeching Chiroptera in flight on the Vida Eterna jacket makes a strong visual allegory for NDB's finer tuned spatial sensitivities inside, with their churning rhythms now embedded in fathoms of dread space and father shaded in layers of processed vocal chants, both punk, metal, and tribalistic.
The big highlight is no doubt the closing cut, Vagalumes Piralampos, where Arto Lindsay, the legendary founder of DNA, chimes in on a stygian, moonlit jag between the eyes of bossa nova, batacuda and the sort of esoteric electronics also charted by Rainforest Spiritual Enslavement or Cienfuegos.
But it only really makes sense after you've expended your energies along with the band thru monstrous techno shakedowns such as O veto Chama Seu Nome, the soca-like rush of Condenado Por Un Idioma Desconhecido, or found yourself lost, without coordinates, in the pitch black breakdown of No Meio Da Noite and have been hypnotised by the stalking rhythms and atmospheres of Em Que O Rio Do Mar Se Toma.
The creation of this album, inspired by vampirism, was born from a collaboration between Vascellari and Fortuni with producer Rocco Rampino., whose love of dense textures and low-end bombast masterfully and cleverly couples with the bands explosive percussive charge, resulting in eight tracks that mimic sharp blades scything through a nocturnal jungle.

Antonio Carlos Jobim - Urubu

Brilliant 70s material by Antonio Carlos Jobim - one of his key sets from the middle part of the decade that had the composer really deepening his approach to both singing and songwriting - moving past some of the more instrumental modes that he was using at the start of the decade! There's a richness to the songs that goes way past simple bossa styles - and the lyrical brilliance shows that Jobim hardly ever needed a poet or co-writer to help him hit the heights - as he really wins us over with his words as much as his music. Claus Ogerman produced, and gives things the right balance between fullness and space in the charts - which allows both a great focus on Antonio's vocal style - expressive, but very down to earth - and a few nice solos on Fender Rhodes too! Titles include "Saudade Do Brasil", "Correnteza", "Boto", "Ligia", "Valse", "Arquitetura De Morar", and "O Homem".

Antonio Carlos Jobim - Terra Brasilis

Pretty great sounds from the legendary Antonio Carlos Jobim - an album cut a bit later than his bossa years, but with a darkly sophisticated sound that's pretty darn compelling! The album features larger orchestrations by Claus Ogerman, and in a way, it's similar to the Jobim album on Decca from 1973 (aka Maita Pere) - in that it's got all the simple elements of Jobim's earlier bossa scoring, flushed out into moodier orchestral forms that we'd rank right up there with the modernist work of Gil Evans or Duke Ellington. A few cuts have a breezier sparer sound, and you'll hear English versions of some older bossa tunes. Titles include "Dreamer", "Canta Mais", "Olha Maria", "Wave", "Two Kites", "This Happy Madness", "Song Of The Sabia", "Estrada Do Sol", "Voce Vai Ver", "Off Key", and "Triste".

(180gr) An incredible album from Lo Borges - one of the best singer/songwriters on the Brazilian scene of the 70s!

An incredible album from Lo Borges - one of the best singer/songwriters on the Brazilian scene of the 70s! Borges first burst into the spotlight for his work on the Club Da Esquina album by Milton Nascimento - and his work as part of Milton's "corner club" really helped shape the style of the more famous singer. Yet Borges is almost an equally great talent on his own - with a soaring, soulful approach that's every bit as great as the best Nascimento material from the period - and recorded in a wonderfully similar spirit! The sound here is completely sublime right from the start - music that moves us, even if we can't understand the language of the lyrics - like some of the best work by Caetano Veloso and Gilberto Gil. There's maybe a bit more guitar than on some of the Milton Nascimento work of the period - but used in a fuzzy way that slides in nicely with some of the jazzy phrasing of the instrumentation - which is delivered with help from key contemporaries who include Beto Guedes, Nelson Angelo, Toninho Horta, and Tenorio Jr. The songwriting is amazing - and titles include "Cancao Postal", "Voce Fica Melhor Assim", "Nao Foi Nada", "Calibre", "Faca Seu Jogo", "Toda Essa Agua", "Pensa Voce", "Como O Machando", and "Aos Baroes".

Mustapha Skandrani - Ishtikhabars And Improvisations

Mustapha Skandrani, a luminary of Algerian music, possessed a unique musical sense, able to transcend the borders of musical cultures to create a distinctive fusion of Arabic-Andalusian and European styles.

"Istikhbars and Improvisations", recorded in 1965 in Paris, is a solo piano album presenting a trans-Mediterranean crossover based on traditional Algerian vocal pieces known as istikhbars. Playing these istikhbars (which have roots in the Islamic Arab-Andalusian culture which flourished in Spain) on the piano - that quintessentially European instrument - Skandrani was greeted with derision by some purists. His powerful musical vision, however, perceives the European element involved in Arabic-Andalusian musical culture, a world of exchange and co-existence.

Skandrani's modus operandi on this release is to present each istikhbar, modal in nature, then to play an improvisation based on it, and its attendant mode. This A/B alternation continues throughout. The pellucid clarity of Skandrani's playing on this album may remind the listener of a modal Goldberg Variations, Bach and Glenn Gould transplanted to Andalucia. Other ears will hear the Arabic/Maghreb elements more strongly. Skandrani's precise touch and clear, symmetrical rhythmic sense links both worlds, assuring us that the Mediterranean is not a barrier, but a unifier, and that the differences between the cultures are not so vast. This is an admirable achievement, resulting in beautiful music of a rare charm.

Mustapha Skandrani was born in Algiers in 1920, and died there in 2005. He mastered a number of instruments at an early age, and his musical prowess led him to work with the great singers and ensembles of his day, in live performances, recordings, and radio broadcasts. Later in his life, he devoted much energy to education.

Che Chen & Robbie Lee - The Spectrum Does

Che Chen&Robbie Lee

The Spectrum Does

12inchAUDIOMER016LP
AUDIOMER
27.10.2017

On The Spectrum Does, New York avant-rock musicians Che Chen and Robbie Lee create three earthy and slow moving pieces, informed as much by various global folk traditions as they are by 20th century composition and improvisation. Their 'anything goes' approach to improvising leads to a sonic document that sounds raw, intense and freshly exciting. A wild and shambolic brew sounding like nothing else. BIOGRAPHY Visual artist and musician Che Chen lives and works in New York. Former music projects include True Primes, duos with Tetuzi Akiyama, Chie Mukai and Jozef van Wissem's Heresy Of The Free Spirit (with Robbie Lee). Currently he plays with percussionist Rick Brown as 75 Dollar Bill. Robbie Lee is a musician, composer and producer also living in NYC. He has played with an eclectic group of improvisers and songwriters like Neil Hagerty & The Howling Hex, Baby Dee, Cass McCombs, Mary Halvorson and Talibam! He is also in Creature Automatic, Seaven Teares, and a new trio with Brian Chase and James Ilgenfritz. He runs the Telegraph Harp label with Elisha Wiesner. INFO Che Chen is musician and visual artist currently best known for his work with percussionist Rick Brown as 75 Dollar Bill. In the mid 2000s he formed this duo with composer and producer Robbie Lee, who at the time played with people like Baby Dee and Neil Hagerty. Their most concentrated period of activity is bookended by a first LP they self-released in 2008 called Begin & Continue! and this record, The Spectrum Does, which contains music recorded several years later. On The Spectrum Does, both tackle a range of un-conven-tional instruments like bass recorders, Renaissance clarinet, glissando flute, tarogato, electrified violin, ultraslow recorders and custom modified tape machines. While their first LP documented their earliest, mostly acoustic improvisations, The Spectrum Does captures Che and Robbie after 5 or so years of meeting two or three times week and multiple tours around the country (a couple of times as a part of Jozef van Wissem's band Heresy Of The Free Spirit). By now what was pulsing out of their little overdriven tube amps was even more electrified and warped. Sounds of unknown origin seem to bubble up to the surface, met by completely unique approaches to wind and string instruments. Much boundary pushing improvised music gets described as 'outer limits' but on The Spectrum Does, it seems much more right to say they explore the 'inner limits'. It is deep listening music, but not minimalist, complex but not virtuosic. Dissonances intermingle with folk harmonies and rhythms. As with all of the music this duo made together, there's a sort of shambolic-shamanic sensibility to it, but without a motive or explicit purpose. To be filed close to your Tony Conrad, Henry Flynt, Pelt, The Dead C records. SOME WORDS FROM THE DUO ON THE SPECTRUM DOES CHE CHEN: The long improvisation that starts on the first side and spills onto the next was recorded live at a gig opening for Loren Connors and Suzanne Langille's incredible band, Haunted House, at Issue Project Room in the Spring of 2011 (back when they were in the Can Factory space). I remembering it being a strong set, crashing out of the gate with Robbie's tangled tarogato lines and my splintered violin stabs before careening onward with the kind of harnessed, intensity that one always hopes will appear when improvising... The recordings that make up the bulk of the second side were made in a dark and airless practice space in the back of the Glasslands, a now defunct DIY space in South Williamsburg. The sound is more insular, turned inward instead of exploding out like the live set, and is pretty representative of how single minded the explorations that made up our weekly sessions' could be. ROBBIE LEE: These pieces have the feeling of field recording, capturing rehearsals in their best moments, so a sense of freedom is everywhere, the kind of freedom that can collapse at any moment. But they are also the result of years of a developing a very close language, specific to this duo alone. We originally began playing together as bass clarinet duos, and for a while as bass recorder duos. So even when we are playing radically different instruments, there's still this very real feeling that neither of us know who's generating which sound, in this floating cloud of vibration. This is partially because of Che's use of tape machines, custom modified to loop and play at different speeds, to reiterate and regurgitate my sounds, and then his own as well.CHE CHEN: Not long after the Issue show, things fell apart, as they often do, and I went off and spent a couple of years collaborating with people in the Japanese underground before woodshedding hard on the electric guitar and starting 75 Dollar Bill. Meanwhile, Robbie made another record of his idiosyncratic songs (this time as Creature Automatic) and seemed to be focusing his considerable knowledge and technique on getting really good at one of the more unassuming instruments in his toolbox, the open-holed flute. I didn't listen to Spectrum during the 5 years it sat on the shelf, but hearing it now, I love the openness and spirit of adventure. All the angles we were working on seem well-represented. I hear the synthesis of all the hours we spent playing together, and of all the hours we spent listening to music, another important part of those times. I hear our commitment to creating a shared language, a framework for making music spontaneously in the moment. But most of all I hear two people finding their way, pushing and supporting each other in sound.

The Gamelan Of The Walking Warrior - Gamelan Beleganjur And The Music Of The Ngaben Funerary Ritual In Bali

  • 6: At the house of the deceased
  • 7: Procession to the cremation ground
  • 8: Lamentation
  • 9: At the seaside

A fascinating immersion in the heart of a funeral ceremony live recorded in Bali, where gongs, cymbals, and drums give rhythm to the bewitching atmosphere of this mortuary procession.

The international audience's interest into Balinese music and its gamelan orchestras dates back to the edition of large ethnographic series in the 1950s, 60s and 70s which largely encouraged the discovery of this music beyond Indonesia's borders. Taking advantage of a more advanced technology compared to the vinyl golden era, the present field recordings produced in 2011 render at the closest the power of gamelans. They are presented here in two forms. The first one offers a display of Beleganjur music out of the ritual context, which can be differentiated by a more melodic form and a more dramatic and hypnotic aspect of the compositions. The second one presents the Beleganjur style in the ceremonial context of the Ngaben funerary rite in the village of Peliatan. The utmost vitality of these orchestras springs out throughout the different stages of these funerals, and the sound environment surrounding the musicians immerse the listener in the very heart of the procession following the corpse.

With The Gamelan of The Walking Warriors, Akuphone carries on its exploration of ritual and ceremonial music with those materials of rare intensity. These recordings were collected by Vincenzo Della Ratta, PhD in Ethnomusicology from the Sapienza University (Rome). As a specialist of the gongs music from the Austronesian cultures of Southeast Asia, Della Ratta is the author of numerous articles on the subject. His field researches have already been edited as a vinyl entitled Kwangkay: Funerary Music Of The Dayak Benuaq Of Borneo (Sublime Frequencies, 2016).

When it comes to old-school roots reggae, few groups were as influential as The Maytals. Adding Frederick Toots' Hibbert's name to the front of their billing later in the 1970s, in the earliest days they were more egalitarian as they built their sound and legend. From The Roots, originally released on Trojan Records in 1970 (alongside another full-length that same year, Monkey Man), was a transitional record for the group. Leaving behind their early ska days - much like The Wailers and other peers - they had yet to settle into the slower tempos that blew in like ganja smoke by the mid-'70s. As a result, music here generally gallops, and vocals fall in line. As heard on gems like Koo Koo,' Got To Feel,' and Pee Pee Cluck Cluck,' the Maytals' lyrics tend mostly towards love and the pursuit thereof. The group, throughout its career, was also deeply spiritual and much of this was expressed through song - a great case in point here is Thy Kingdom Come,' essentially a church hymn set to reggae music. And the album concludes with an interesting cover of the Lennon/McCartney hippie chestnut, Give Peace A Chance,' which is much faster than the original and quite groovy overall. The Maytals are generally overlooked in the pantheon of reggae giants, but this is unjust. Do your part in recognizing their legendary status by digging into this filling meal of classic Jamaican fare.

Mdou Moctar - Sousoume Tamachek

Music for desert picnics. Tuareg guitarist Mdou Moctar delves into his more sensitive side with a minimal studio recording of dreamy ballads. Thumping calabash, droning guitars, and vocal overdubs evoke an imagined desert soundscape. All instruments and vocals performed by Mdou only, creating very personal and auteur sessions. Emotive and introspective, exploring themes of religion, spirituality, and matters of the heart. Songs that are difficult to place, lifted out of half remembered memory for one last time.

Ricardo Vincenzo - Pororoca Transatlantica

From the deep roots of giant trees with longing vines come the drums that flow through ear, heart, nerves and limbs. In soothing yet roaring bewilderment, like the Pororoca of Rio Negro and Rio São Francisco that carve their ways through the unchartered Brazilian land, "Ricardo Vincenzo" creates a soundscape of different beats, sounds and voices from the indigenous world. A rhythmic brew with varying monotony that scratches at the doors of perception and seduces our Little Luise to tiptoe through her sleep walking journey. Que noite maravilhosa. Limited release with hand-silkscreened sleeve.

Grupo Magnético - Vampiras

Athens of the North does not release new material very often, when we do it has to be up to standard and Grupo Magnético most undeniably up to standard.

Recording a sound from a certain period is notoriously difficult to pull off, Grupo Magnético smashed that 70s boogaloo sound so much so people I played the tapes to thought it was old tapes I had dug up.

Antonio Adolfo - Viralata

Far Out Recordings are honoured to be working with master composer, arranger and pianist, Antonio Adolfo for the first time since releasing his Destiny album in 2007. This time we present the first ever vinyl reissue of his era-defining Viralata LP: An essential album from Brazil's majorly progressive heyday of late seventies jazz-funk. Viralata is a sacred artefact of Brazilian music, which Antonio himself describes as 'a product of my hybrid musical influences that joins together flavours of marchinhas de carnaval, frevo, toada, classical, baia o, mpb and jazz, etc'.

The album's first track 'Cascavel' is the emotionally charged, celebratory dance anthem, which became a London jazz-dance classic in the early '90s after Far Out label boss Joe Davis discovered a handful of copies in a second hand shop in Sao Paulo and brought them back to London to sell to DJs like Gilles Peterson and Patrick Forge. In recent years the track has been played out by the likes of Floating Points, Mr Scruff and Andrew Ashong, it was also the last song ever to play on the hallowed soundsystem of London's beloved club Plastic People...

Saturday nights at Plastic People wouldn't have been the same without this album. Cascavel was such an important track for the club, it was the last tune we played there before the doors were closed forever.'

(Sean McAuliffe, Plastic People & NTS Radio)

Viralata sits comfortably on the same pedestal as Azymuth's Light As A Feather and Joao Donato's Quem É Quem, which is no co-incidence. All three keystone LPs were recorded and engineered by Toniniho, considered by many to be "the Brazilian Rudy Van Gelder" whose magic touches in the studio also helped to produce Marcos Valle's Previsão Do Tempo and Joyce's Água E Luz among many other holy grails and unassailable classics of soulful Brazilian music.

Antonio's work has been widely performed by his legendary Brazilian contemporaries including Sergio Mendes, Emilio Santiago and Erasmo Carlos, but also by platinum-selling American icons including Stevie Wonder, Herb Alpert and Dionne Warwick. Following an early 70s spell of studying jazz in the USA, Viralata's release in 1979 arrived at the height of a flourishing period of Antonio's career. With his late 60s and 70s output following through on his influences of tropicalia, funk, MPB and easy listening, the almost entirely instrumental Viralata marked an apex for Brazilian jazz.

SOUNDWAY RECORDS
12.09.2017

Tanzania's Msafri Zawose has been one of the biggest slept-on musical forces from the region. That's about to change with the imminent arrival of a new album that will redefne the boundaries of gogo music. The Wagogo people are Msafri's traditonally nomadic tribe from the center of the Tanzania, known for their musicality and made famous by Hukwe Zawose - Msafri's father, who toured the world as a part of Peter Gabriel's Real World roster in the 80s and 90s.
The album has been produced in collaboraton with Sam Jones from SoundThread, whose recent works with Orlando Julius and remixes for Mugwisa Internatonal and Sarabi have been rapturously received. The tracks remain profoundly 'gogo' with traditonal instruments and singing, but are infused with an organic electronic aesthetc. This is an afro-futurist journey that takes in dub, balearic, ambient and electronic vibratons alongside Zawose's hypnotc playing and emotve, plaintve vocals.

Sabrina Malheiros - Opara (Ashley Beedle's Afikanz On Mars Remixes)

Warehouse Find!

Following the sold out Theo Parrish remix of Marcos Valle's '1985', here's the second in Far Out's Brazilika 12" with three scorching remixes from UK dance veteran Ashley Beedle. Three peak time excursions into percussive, soulful house on a stylish, cosmic Brazilian party tip.

Following the sold out Theo Parrish remix of Marcos Valle's '1985' back in April, the second release in Far Out's Brazilika 12' series features a highlight from Sabrina Malheiros' 2011 album 'Dreaming': the blissed-out, sun soaked samba classic 'Opara', which gets three scorching remixes from UK dance veteran Ashley Beedle.

Currently celebrating a decade since the release of her critically acclaimed debut album 'Equilibria', Sabrina Malheiros has remained at the forefront of modern, soul-infused Brazilian music. Growing up in Rio, the daughter of Alex Malheiros, bassist of Jazz-funk pioneers Azymuth, Sabrina has taken the legacy of samba and bossa nova and forged her own forward-thinking path, taking with her all the style and substance of the early days.

Produced under his Afrikanz On Marz moniker, Beedle's remix brings all the right elements of the original to the fore. The result is three peak time excursions into percussive, soulful house on a stylish, cosmic Brazilian party tip, infused with rich, warm rhodes, synth and flute throughout.

The vocal mix on the A side provides a spacious backdrop of twinkling keys and buoyant percussion to Malheiros' gently floating strains. The other mixes offer similarly floor-focused variations: the aptly titled 'Galactic Flute Remix' on the flip pairs the titular wind instrument with a deeper groove that retains the loose-limbed appeal of the original, plus a bonus instrumental to boot. A sure fire heat bringer and certainly one of the most colourful dance 12's we've heard this year.

The Brazilika 12' series is the new vinyl home to the previously unreleased dance exclusives taken from the Spiritual South mix on CD2 of Far Out's 20th anniversary double compilation, released in May 2015.

Wganda Kenya - Afro Columbia Ep

REPRESSED !!
We are happy to announce the first in an occasional series of fully licensed 12" releases on Autonomous Africa exploring the influence of music from Africa across the globe.

The first release comes from Colombia's Wganda Kenya with three tracks recorded in the mid 70s. The Caribbean coast of Colombia has a long relationship with Africa stretching back hundreds of years. Strong trading links and migration from West Africa to Colombia led to a distinct African influence on the music in cities such as Cartagena and the local music (cumbia and champeta) absorbed these influences. This was particularly notable in the 70s as records by Fela Kuti amongst others arrived in Colombia. One of the leading practitioners of this Afro Sound were the mighty Wganda Kenya who were huge there in the 70s and 80s and whose music is still highly regarded to this day.

While their music has appeared on compilations, there hasn't been a big fat 12" vinyl release since Island Records offshoot, Mango put "Shakalode" out as a 12" way back in 1989.

"Shakalode" on the A side is a powerful reworking of the Fela Kuti classic "Shakara" which was much covered in Colombia in the mid 1970s. It's a transcendental Afro Colombian funk bomb.

On the other side are two other Wganda Kenya gems; the call and response percussive and organ grooving "Pim Pom" and the more traditional Colombian cumbia singalong anthem "La Botellita".

Originally this was going to be a 2 x 12" featuring some other Wganda Kenya magic but sadly the masters to many of their tracks have been lost. There are plans to put out a second 12" of reworkings of these tracks aimed at djs who won't play records unless they can mix them, but of course, these 40 year old tracks will still rock any open minded dancefloor just as they are.

All proceeds will once again go to the Mtandika mission in Tanzania -

Distributed by Above Board.

Autonomous Africa is a collaborative project run by JD Twitch, Midland and Auntie Flo.

Caroline No - No Language

Recorded in early 2015 and originally released as a micro edition cassette on World News Records, No Language is the debut collection of songs by Melbourne's Caroline No. The group's unique, beguiling sound sits somewhere between archetypal Dunedin pop and languorous, textural improvisation. No Language was spontaneously recorded with one microphone and the serendipity of the session proves tactile in the listening experience. We hear heavily reverbed laughter, coughing, fits and starts with various processing equipment, all of which contribute wonderfully to the ephemeral nature of the music. On Up To Downtown' vocalist Caroline Kennedy implores the band to just try to stay in time' before lurching into what, against all odds, turns out to be a remarkably anthemic earworm of a pop song. Closer Roomer' incorporates granular processing (perhaps a pedal someone forgot they'd brought to the session) to endearing and startling effect. Ultimately, No Language is a marvelous balancing act of a record, drawing from pop, free improv, and psychedelia in equal parts to arrive at something timeless.
