Onom Agemo & The Disco Jumpers - Liquid Love

Onom Agemo&The Disco Jumpers

Liquid Love

12inchAR083VL / 140061
Agogo Records
27.02.2017

Onom Agemo and The Disco Jumpers are finally back on track with their sophomore album - Liquid Love , a well psychedelic longplay effort jam-packed with captivating grooves of a bubbling, pumping, floating and defo frolicking and playful nature. - Liquid Love is also the name of the title track which can be described as a proper fancy ass, lime green glow-in-the dark cocktail served on dinghies throughout harbour boat trips to punters in full-on scuba gear. Coming from ancient days and weighing in some Malian heritage is - Kurifuna , a tune sporting quite tipsy bamboo flutes, long lost rhythm signatures and secret messages from Saturn. - Opus reflects the bands ardent enthusiasm and fascination for trance-inducing rituals performed by the Moroccan Gnawa people and is recommended to come to peace with one's innermost demons. Just pump up the jam and bop your head back and forth furiously. But hey kids, don't try this at home and without assistance as cataleptic conditions might occur.
With - The Disco Jumpers we're having a dance to the hymn of the most dedicated amongst all Onom Agemo-worshippers. And btw - if the bands name seems a little too off to get stuck in your head how about some backward reading If you're like #wtf now be assured that there's no deeper meaning intended. It just sounds fancy, outlandish and peregrine.
Also we see our time travelling guitar player contributing to this album with - Weird Panda King ,a song he might - or might not - have picked up throughout one of his trips to the 70s. And talking the 70s in general, the whole album incorporates bits and bops from the past, present and future, drawing influences from both very familiar and also faraway places. Just to name a few there's Krautrock, AfroFunk, traditional Moroccan Trance, Future Jazz and much more to be found. The Beatles excluded, though. Finally - Somebody is the icing on the cake - a quadripartite suite that was premiered at the occasion of the second Kosmos-Days event in Berlin. For this special musical piece the band was able to work with three local female pygmies which provided additional layers of most beauteous folkloristic rack- wheel chants to round off things nicely a.k.a. somebody is counting on universal help to get in touch with somebody. Well, things like that do actually happen. For sure.

Orchestra Baobab - Tribute To Ndiouga Dieng
  • Foulo
  • Fayinkounko
  • Natalia
  • Magnokouto
  • Mariama
  • Woulinewa
  • Sey
  • Caravana
  • Douga
  • Alekouma

West Africa's most iconic dance-band are back. A decade on from their last album and almost half a century since their formation, Senegal's Orchestra Baobab return with a timeless set of classic, swaying tunes fusing Afro-Cuban rhythms and African tradition in the group's trademark style.

Recorded locally in Moussa X's Dakar studio, the new recordings sound fresh and yet reassuringly familiar, retaining the ripeness of the sound that made Orchestra Baobab a legend but interpreted with a vigour and vibrancy, and with a few twists, that are vital and captivating.

As enduring as the mighty African Baobab tree from which the group derives its name, the veteran core of the band remains as strong and sturdy as ever. Vocalists Balla Sidibe and Rudy Gomis, saxophonists Issa Sissoko and Thierno Koite and the long-serving, rock steady rhythm section of Balla Sidibe, timbales, Charlie Ndiaye bass and Mountaga Koite on congas.

Alongside this impressive continuity there have been changes in the ten years since Baobab's last World Circuit album, 'Made in Dakar' - but they have been executed seamlessly. Guitarist Barthelemy Attisso, now a lawyer in Togo, is absent due to the demands of his day job but kora player Abdouleye Cissoko from the Cassamance region in southern Senegal is a welcome addition. It's the first time Baobab has numbered a kora player in its permanent ranks but Cissoko's rippling strings have blended seamlessly into the sound and lent a fresh dynamic. Elsewhere Baobab's distinctive two saxophone attack - which combines the vibrato laden declamatory style of Issa Cissoko with the softer more lyrical playing of Thierno Koite has been bolstered by trombonist Wilfried Zinzou and the young virtuosic guitarist Rene Sowatche, both from the fertile musical pastures of Benin.

Veteran vocalist Balla Sidibe is a commanding presence on the album with his triple threat of musical influences - Manding from Guinea/Mali, creole from Cassamance and Afro-Cuban. Two special guests memorably add their voices to the mix. Cheikh Lo dropped by the studio to add his soulful tones to 'Magno Kouto' and Thione Seck - who left Babobab in 1979 for a career as one of West Africa's biggest solo stars reunites with his old band mates for the first time in over 35 years to reprise his first hit 'Sey'.

'Tribute To Ndiouga Dieng' is dedicated to one of the bands original vocalists who sadly died in November 2016. His songs will continue to be sung with the band by his son Alpha. It represents the latest chapter in a long and storied career that started in 1970 when the newly-formed Orchestra Baobab helped forge Dakar into one of the world's most vital musical cities. Over the next decade the group dominated the local scene and produced countless hits before disbanding in the early eighties.

A huge groundswell of international interest in their original recordings - and in particular the acclaim that greeted World's Circuit's reissue of their legendary 1982 album 'Pirate's Choice' - led to the triumphant reformation of the band in 2001 and their award winning comeback album 'Specialist In All Styles'.

Since then they've toured the world to international acclaim and have now been back together as long as they were in the belle epoque of the group's first incarnation. This, their third album since their felicitous comeback produced by Nick Gold, Lamine Faye and Jerry Boys - is an irresistible mix of velvet harmonies, warm and heartfelt vocals, smoky sax and sweetly shimmering kora and guitar lines, expertly crafted and masterfully delivered with a poise and virtuosity built up over a lifetime.

We give you Orchestra Baobab: specialist in all styles, still going strong and still growing.

Various - The Original Sound Of Mali

Mr Bongo is proud to present 'The Original Sound of Mali', compiled by Vik Sohonie & David Buttle.
Malian music is arguably deeper, more sophisticated and lyrical than any other form of African music. Those of us deeply entranced by Malian culture, and, in particular, the immense hypnotic beauty of Malian music, have put together a
selection of songs from across the country.
Compiled by Vik Sohonie & Dave 'Mr Bongo' Buttle, the story of this release began in 2015 when Dave happened upon the Soul Bonanza blog. A treasure chest of rare finds from around the world! One mix in particular stood out and totally enthralled Dave - le monde à change: a tribute to mali 1970 - 1991. He
already knew of Malian legends such as the Rail Band, Salif Keita, & Les Ambassadeurs du Motel de Bamako, but this mix was something else! Deep & culled from the collections of some of the heaviest African music collectors in the world, legends like Vik Sohonie, Hidehito Morimoto, Philippe Noel, Gregoire
Villanova, and Rickard Masip. Dave immediately contacted Vik and a journey of discovery tracking down the rights-holders began. He also turned to the font of Malian music knowledge, Florent Mazzoleni. Florent has written the definitive book about Malian music - 'Musiques modernes et traditionnelles du Mali'. He
proposed some incredible tracks to include and provided the back bone of the sleeve notes and photos that are used in the album. No Malian album would be complete without a striking front cover photo, and ours is sourced from the late great Malian photographer Malick Sidibé.
On this album you will find well-known artists sitting next to rarer
discoveries. The Rail Band, who are one of the best known of all the big bands in Mali, gave us the stars Mory Kanté and Salif Keita. Les Amabassedeurs du Motel de Bamako were another big act that had Idrissa Soumaoro, Kanté Manfila, and for a while Salif Keita in their ranks. Sometimes Salif would play in both bands in one night, quite a feat considering the bands were fierce rivals. As an albino Salif has had to face considerable prejudice from society, focussing on his musical career to help overcome this.

A major discovery on the album has been Idrissa Soumaoro et L'Eclipse de L'Ija. L'Eclipse de l'Institut des Jeunes Aveugles was a Blind teenagers institute and their record was produced by the German association that took care of blind Malian teenagers in Bamako. It was never properly released commercially and was the first recordings by the legends of Malian music Idrissa Soumaoro, Amadou Bagayoko and Mariam Doumbia. Amadou & Mariam later got married and became household stars, including making an album with Manu Chao.
This album is a concerted global effort to showcase the most vital cornerstone of Malian culture in an attempt to preserve its reputation in the face of its current, grim reality. We hope our highlights of Mali's rich history of musical innovation will serve as a starting point for reclaiming an image tainted by unnecessary conflict. May peace and music return to Mali soon.
Dedicated to Malick Sidibé.

Was läge also näher, als

Various - Synthesise The Soul: Astro-atlantic Hypnotica From The Cape Verde Islands 1973-1988

"In Cape Verde, we had no access to electronic instruments," said Tchiss Lopes, a Cape Verdean singer baed in Rome. "In Europe, we had access, but we had to adapt. Audiences expected electronic sounds, but we still stayed true to our sound."

"At first, the music was just to cater to Cape Verdean immigrants, but soon, people of Napoli especially started feeling it, then Rome."

In the 1980s, that feeling transpired across Lisbon, Paris, Rotterdam, and Boston, as one the largest waves of migration from a single country, propelled by political instability and economic uncertainty, sent thousands of Cape Verdeans to the West's cities.

Through 18 diverse tracks, this compilation reveals how immigration from the Cape Verde Islands to Europe and the United States gave us an alternate history of the electronic music that dominated hearts and minds across the world in the late 1990s. But the story doesn't start in a major Western cultural hub, rather in the small cluster of islands 400 miles off the Senegalese coast, and offers an unparalleled insight into the longterm cultural splendor catalyzed by migration.

Movement and mobility are intrinsic aspirations of the human condition. What we've come to know as immigration is as old as civilization. Yet today we measure immigration through a series of cold data. Immigrants are either condemned as disposable threats or celebrated as entrepreneurial treasures, rarely occupying a space in between.

Seldom do we peer back into the past to examine the tangible and timeless creations born from the movement of peoples, overlooking cultural innovations arguably ahead of their time, precursors to consuming global trends.

Cape Verde today is justifiably hailed as an African political success story, but things were different in the 1980s.

A war of independence from Portugal was won in 1975, and Cape Verde suffered the familiar ills of a society born from colonialism and slavery struggling to integrate into a globalized world.

This detachment fostered a yearning to integrate, to connect in anyway possible. The new found homes in the multiculti metropoles of Europe offered little respite. Cape Verdean immigrants were deemed "hot blooded," and perceived as "dropouts" and "juvenile delinquents."

The ready availability of electronic instruments, a doorway to a long denied 'modernity' and an anchor in their adopted homes, was seductive.

"Cape Verdeans were celebrating their independence and with that the dancing became even more important," said Val Xalino, an unsung pioneer in the development of his country's electronic sound, based in Gothenburg, Sweden. "People wanted to hear something different. They wanted the synthesizer!"

Emigre musicians began traveling to and from Europe and their home islands, their luggage containing stock of synthesizers and MIDI instruments. Travel to the countryside to learn the rhythms of rural farmers became common. The melodies of the charmingly off-tune, often damaged accordions were transplanted onto synthesizers.

A cultural supply chain was established. Largely detached from global capitalism, music perhaps was, and in many ways still is, Cape Verde's most effective gateway to synthesize with the world, immigration the engine and lifeblood.

The hearts and minds of a musically-inclined people were captured. One mercurial youngster, Paulino Vieira, arguably Cape Verde's most important musician, the real mastermind behind the islands' melodic majesty, was especially drawn to keyboard instruments, having honed his skills at a Catholic seminary. He arranged or contributed to half the songs in this release.

Vieira was an integral member of Cesaria Evora's backing band, and while her cavaquinho-driven traditional songs registered Cape Verde as a cultural force worldwide, an electronic movement burgeoned just beneath the surface.

It soon found its headquarters in Lisbon, where Vieira had emigrated at age 18 to lead a reworked Voz de Cabo Verde, the commanding, enigmatic ensemble that enticed Cape Verdean musicians from around the diaspora to collaborate.

"Paulino was the most visionary," said Elisio Gomes, a Paris-based singer who collaborated with Vieira often. "He always had this gift to be 10 years ahead of his time. That's why our music sounds like it was produced today."

Largely overlooked outside the Lusophone realm, Cape Verde's Astro-Atlantic gumbo of instrumentation and rhythm offers a timely lesson of migration's power to produce cultural innovations ahead of its time.

This unknown, ultra-progressive sound could not have been perfected without the induction of Cape Verde's artistic human capital into the West.

As we watch with heavy hearts the tragic crisis unfolding across the Mediterranean, as people fleeing similar circumstances strive to settle in Europe, a measured hint of patience will ultimately justify their vast inclusion. There are poets, writers, artists, thinkers, and, of course, musicians, raised in an age of technology, that are making the treacherous journey by boat, or by land on foot, from Syria, Eritrea, Libya, Iraq, and elsewhere. Paulino Vieira's heir, and lush cultural innovation bound to bear the same fruit, lie among them.

Dengue Dengue Dengue - Siete Races

When the Peruvian duo Dengue Dengue Dengue first broke into the scene, the world immediately surrendered to their mesmerising blend of traditional cumbia with the modern electronic rhythms of dub, techno and dancehall. After making this local movement gain international attention with their celebrated debut album 'La Alianza Profana' and the followup 'Serpiente Dorada' EP on Enchufada, the masked duo from Lima is now ready to evolve beyond their musical influences and come into their own as their sound develops into something truly unique with their new album 'Siete Raíces'. Taking its name from a traditional Peruvian liquor - a potent beverage brewed from several jungle plants with mystical and aphrodisiac properties - 'Siete Raíces' is a suiting metaphor for a band whose distinctively hybrid sonic recipe has been perfected over the years. From their first single 'Guarida (feat. Sara Van)', where they introduce a melancholic vocal component to their sound for the very first time, to Murdah's frantic juke influences or Badman's tarraxo leanings, Dengue Dengue Dengue set out to expand the unique hybrid cocktail of sounds that has put them on the forefront of the global club music movement. 'Siete Raíces' fully embraces South America's rich musical traditions while taking these cultural references towards the future, powered by thick bass lines, ethereal synths and dusty samples. Striking a captivating balance between tradition and modernity, Dengue Dengue Dengue pick the best of both worlds to expand their unique sonic universe, where the rich mystical ambience of the Peruvian Amazon is translated into an elevating experience for the world's most forwardthinking clubs and festival stages.

07.04.2017

Voilaaa is one of the many projects led and produced by Bruno Patchworks' Hovart, who's proven over the past 15 years, his place amongst the finest producers of groove music in all genres.

This time exploring the wide spectrum of the African and Tropical Disco scene, he received a massive international support for Voilaaa's first album, On te l'avait dit, released late 2015 on Favorite Recordings.

Following to that success and pursuing the same direction combining of the festive, yet sometime futile nature of Disco, and the instinctive, deep, sometimes rough nature of African music, Voilaaa's now presenting its 2nd efforts, Des Promesses.

The 13 tracks of the album are again up to expectations, and Voilaaa has not finished feeding international dancefloors with heavy Afro-Disco music. Alongside Bruno at the production, singers Pat Kalla and Sir Jean are back providing their carefree lyrics and Afro vibes, and Senegalese artist Doctor Lass comes to extend the team, with 3 brilliant titles, including a great Funky cover of the classic Mandjou' by Salif Keita and Les Ambassadeurs Internationaux..

Ahmed Malek & Flako - The Electronic Tapes LP

In the early 1980s, Ahmed Malek was already in his 50s , when he discovered synthesizers and electronic music for himself and started to experiment with sounds. The result was a mixture of ambient synth music, field recordings he made in Cuba and a wide variation of different sound experiments that he also presented as different avanguarde music festivals in Cuba and the US. None of it was ever released but we got a huge box of master tapes from his family and we're happy to present this different side of Ahmed Malek's music. It was compiled and co-produced by Flako, a fan of early electronic and synth music. This is not a remix album though, Flako's aim was to create an album out of 2 hours of material that sounds like it might have if Mr. Malek would have finished it himself before of his death. Fully approved and licensed from the artists family.

The album comes with an informative booklet with liner notes, an interview with Flako regarding his approach towards the production and unseen photos. We will also release a third album by Ahmed Malek which will be more in the vein again of the music he is known for and this album will also be previously unreleased.

Ibibio Sound Machine is a clash of African and electronic elements inspired in equal measure by the golden era of West African funk, disco, modern post-punk, and electro. Since their self-titled debut in 2014, the band has forged a reputation as a high-energy live act appearing on stages such as Later with Jools Holland, Glastonbury, Roskilde, and the BBC 6 Music Festival, as well as at iconic venues such as Shakespeare's Globe Theatre in London as part of Lauren Laverne's Wonder Women' series. The album title Uyai (pronounced 'you eye') means beauty' in Ibibio language and refers to the strength and free spirit of women in general and in particular, the courage of the women in lead singer Eno Williams' family, to whom she often refers in her writing.. The songs are based more around themes of empowerment, freedom, and the liberation of dance for women, and people in general.' The album opens with Give Me a Reason,' a song about the 276 Chibok girls who were abducted in northern Nigeria in 2014 and remain missing to this day. Eno challenges, Why should girls be denied the right to education, and why should people in general not be free to be who they want to be in their life' The Pot Is On Fire' is a food dance celebrating the happy place' when the food will be ready soon. It's also metaphorical,' Eno writes. Something is brewing which will soon bear fruit.' Folk stories, recounted to Eno by her family as a child in her mother's Ibibio tongue, form the creative fabric from which the band's unique musical tapestry is woven. Evocative poetic imagery and empowering messages set against an edgy, Afro-Electro soundscape give the band a unique space within the current wave of modern Afrocentric sounds sweeping across the globe.

Ranging from melancholic to hopeful, the music of 55 Cancri e is perhaps an expression of Hausenkamp's longing for a better home planet, and for the possibility of escape. In creating these kinds of science fiction lullabies, she is preparing us for both the beauty and the sadness of a looming future. Using her
voice mainly to hum or whistle along, she does however break the silence on a few tracks to sing in her native tongue. On "Rävjakt" she imagines a turning of the tables, where the fox hunters are chased out of the forest by the animals. "Alltid Du" is a tender and straightforward love song that has become the centre
of her recent live performances. And on "55 Cancri e I (We Ran Away)" she switches over to English for the first time, where we find her in a slightly different voice.
Often working with variations of recurring musical themes, Hausenkamp allows for subtle changes over a number of tracks to create a linear progression that unfolds as a whole in a hypnotic brew of folk-inspired pop. Saturating it all in a glistening atmosphere of both electronic and acoustic sounds as well as samples
and field recordings, this album comes as a natural format for Hausenkamp to explore her ideas.

Aloha Got Soul
08.03.2017

The Japanese singer Aiko Sekiguchi teaming up with Dale Senaga in 1979. The pair flew from Hawaii to California to record the backing tracks at A&M Studios, returning with the reels to Commercial Recording Studio in Honolulu, where they added Aiko's voice and Dale's synthesizer overdubs (and Aiko resumed her residency at the Oasis nightclub).

Fly With Me is a sexy, exotic floater, crossing Love Unlimited-style two-step and West Coast AOR. On the flip, Time Machine is jazzy disco steppers, with a cosmic fizz and a light case of the Gloria Gaynors.

All Them Witches - Sleeping Through The War

All Them Witches are an American rock band from Nashville,
Tennessee. The band consists of drummer Robby Staebler,
vocalist / multi-instrumentalist Charles Michael Parks Jr.,
guitarist Ben McLeod and keyboardist Allan Van Cleave.
 The band’s musical style incorporates elements from multiple
genres, such as hard rock, stoner rock, psychedelia, neopsychedelia, blues, folk and southern rock; however, Julian
Marszalek of The Quietus noted that: “... this isn’t blues of the
‘woke-up-this-morning’ variety but one of malaise, anxiety and
fear brought on a by world seemingly dead set on destruction;
nor is this an escapist variant of psychedelia wherein one form
of reality is jettisoned in favour of another for reasons of cheap
thrills.

Dug Out
29.12.2015

In the early seventies Leroy 'Mabrak' Mattis studied at Howard University in Washington DC, where he joined a drum and dance group named Contact Africa. Instructor Kojo Fosu introduced him to the talking drum.
'I had only seen it in magazines. He started showing me, and taught me the history of it. Talking drum is the highest level of drum music...
'Going back home in 1973, I knew I was now ready to record. That's when I bumped into an old friend, Bim Sherman. He knew I was a musician, and he was going to King Tubby's studio that day. I tagged along. I recorded rasta repeater drum overdubs on his first hit, 100 Years. This allowed me to re-connect with Tubby...'
With brilliant guitar instead of horns, here is a different version of the rhythm Bim used for Love Forever. The same as on Mabrak's Drum Talk LP — but a little brighter and more dynamic, and bringing a deep, unmissable Tubbys dub.

Es ist wieder soweit! King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard verkünden die Veröffentlichung ihres nächsten Studioalbums.

Mokoomba - Luyando

Zimbabwe's most celebrated young band Mokoomba is back with a new offering: Luyando. 'Luyando' means mother's love' in Tonga, a language that is spoken by the original inhabitants of the Zambezi Valley of Southern Africa. But beyond the dictionary definition, Luyando goes to the heart of Mokoomba's music. Lyrical and beautifully breezy, Luyando is also a spiritual journey into the heart of Zimbabwean society, culture and tradition.

Baast - Baazar

Baast

Baazar

2x12inchURII002
UBIQUITY
24.02.2017

Baast returns with a follow-up to their cosmic jazz funk opus "Dimensions", with another set of esoteric "Kosmiche Musik" on their new offering "Bazaar." Channeling the same energy filtered through a more "worldly" vibe, the heavy focus is on polyrhythmic percussion producing a decidedly Middle Eastern flavor in a similar vein to Krautrock standouts Embryo and Passport.

The brainchild of R. Scott Dibble and DJ Johnny Basil, Baast's live performances are a mix of theatrical rock, jazz improv, and extended funk sojourns once they lock into a groove. 2016 has been a coming out party of sorts for once-underground hero DJ Johnny Basil. After a 20 year hiatus from producing music, hunkering down and delving deep into his esoteric studies while amassing one of the more impressive record collections focused on library music, his ascension has been ignited by his exposure to a young and eager audience as a tour DJ for cult surf-rock crusaders The Growlers. Leaving crowds mesmerized throwing down hard Disco and Funk while exploring the groove alongside them gyrating and slithering shirtless on stage. Drawing a visually striking resemblance to Iggy Pop, and sartorially decked in '70s vintage regalia, he's inspired a write-up from Vice outlet Thump dubbing him "The Man You Wish You Were", putting him in the running as a real-life "Most Interesting Man In The World".

Fresh from being named by the OC weekly staff as "Best Local Celebrity of 2016" and loaded with several new projects outside of Baast including his recently released excursion into Nu-Disco with the aptly named Basil & Rogers and Sleaze/Glam Rock outfit Kandi Jones, as well as several upcoming appearances in music videos and fashion shoots, DJ Johnny Basil's long-overdue "shine" is only destined to burn that much brighter.

  • 11: I Play The Kora (feat. Rokia Koné, Mamani Keita, Nneka, Kandia Kouyaté, Mariam Doumbia)
  • 12: Desert Storm (feat. Kandia Kouyaté, Rokia Koné)

Les Amazones d'Afrique are an all-female collective of West African musicians, campaigning for gender equality. Angélique Kidjo, Kandia Kouyaté, Mamani Keita, Mariam Doumbia (Manadou & Mariam), Mariam Koné, Mouneissa Tandina, Nneka, Pamela Badjogo and Rokia Koné hold a strong pedigree and this is a rare collaboration.
Running on funk and blues with dabs of dub, ancient rhythms blending with their Western appropriated cousins, Les Amazones d'Afrique sound like an aural actuation of the new melting pot cities in Africa. Wah wah guitars, distorted thumb piano, dreamy chords and soulful singing over a pneumatic beat give way to the kind of Afrobeat best heard as the dawn rises in a muddy festival field.
Liam Farrell (aka Doctor L - Tony Allen, Mbongwana Star) had a firm hand in leading the edgy, industrial feel to the production. Les Amazones d'Afrique fight inequality and violence towards women and support The Panzi Foundation, who treat women with gynaecological injuries in the Democratic Republic Of Congo. For fans of Amadou & Mariam, Sidiki Diabaté, Tony Allen, Oumou Sangaré, Fatoumata Diawara, Rokia Traoré, Ali Farka Touré, Mbongwana Star, Staff Benda Bilili.
