Menage A Trois - Australia, Pt. I

After a stunning appearance on Aficionado Recordings' unofficial RSD release last year, Ménage à Trois are back on wax, ready to break hearts all over again. The Mancunian ensemble, boasting a member of fellow Yacht groovers Los Porcos and Dream Lovers, tow their own line between new age, Balearic, R&B and yacht rock and this five track EP on French imprint Cracki sees them taking their sound further than ever before. Wandering through the surf, "Ocean Boy" finds Ryan, Craig and Joe laying tropical keys over airy pads and tumbling toms while Jonathan's emotive vocals float off into the sunset. The sultry vibe continues on "The Same Deep Water As Us" as pastoral chords, acoustic guitar and dextrous bass bend in the heat haze, locking us into a warm embrace before the brilliantly kitsch synth solo works its magic. Over on the flip, "Bad Boy At Sunset" distils 'Nebraska' era Springsteen through mid 90s R&B balladry and teen movie heartache, "Conditional Love" reappears in extended, expanded and improved form and the totes emosh "Message In A Bottle" closes the set in a Lewis meets Lynch clinch. Lay back and drift away.

Crystal Fighters - Everything Is My Family (2lp)

Crystal Fighters are a truly international band who learn from humanity's most ancient traditions to make music that sounds like the future. The core trio of singer Sebastian 'Bast' Pringle, guitar and txalaparta player Graham Dickson and multi-instrumentalist Gilbert Vierich have spent the last three years traversing the planet, reconnecting with nature and learning to play forgotten instruments. They return with their third album, Everything Is My Family (out October 21 on Play It Again Sam) which embodies their ecstatic lust for life and, as Bast says, 'is more dancefloor, more psychedelic, more tropical, more rave, more sunshine, more pretty much everything' than anything they have done before.
'All Night', the first track to be heard from the album is already doing big things, flying straight on to the Radio 1 playlist and already garnering close to 2 million streams in just a few short weeks. Now comes new song, 'Ways I Can't Tell', premiered on Zane Lowe's Beats 1 show and one of a handful the band wrote specifically for the live show. 'We write songs that make us want to dance around the studio,' says Bast. 'We figure that if it makes us dance it will probably make other people want to dance too.'
Since the release of acclaimed second album 'Cave Rave' in 2013, Bast has spent time living in the Basque Country, The Canary Islands, and Central America - a field recording of tropical wise-men in conversation from Costa Rica opens the album - and says his time away from the overpowering buzz of modern civilization has given him a new perspective.
Meanwhile, bandmate Graham lived 'up a mountain' in Maine before travelling down to Peru in a modern life-provoked quest for otherness. He says that the time they each individually spent exploring the world has helped them come to terms with some of the highs and tragic lows the band has already experienced.

In the mid-1970s, the young Peul singer Inna Baba Coulibaly, was a regular visitor to the Bamako home

Touré who was already famous thanks to his regular broadcasts on Radio Mali. It took her some tme
to overcome her shyness and come out from behind the door where she would hide, singing the songs
sofly to herself while the two great musicians played together. Afer a while Ali suggested they go to
the Radio Mali studio to record a few songs. This album is the result of those recordings.

Janka Nabay And The Bubu Gang - Build Music

All I am about is making history,' says Janka Nabay. After a string of cassette releases, Nabay became a star of electronic bubu music back home in Sierra Leone. But he was soon forced to escape his homeland's explosive civil war in the 1990s. Over the years, Nabay gradually rebuilt his musical life in the United States while supporting himself working at hotels and fried chicken restaurants. Nabay's bubu music may sound futuristic, but its existence spans centuries. The original bubu is cloaked in mythology: as legend has it, a young 'bubu boy' took the music from witches 500 years ago, brought it to the public at large, and sacrifced his own life in the process. Over time, bubu evolved into a music played collectively on percussive instruments and bamboo horns. Upon the arrival of Islam in Sierra Leone, the hypnotic sound of bubu music was adapted for processionals during Ramadan. As Janka says: 'Bubu is an old, old music, but people don't know about it. You can add new things into the beat if you know it really well, and make your own sound out of it.'

Tamikrest - Kidal

Tamikrest

Kidal

12inch136611 / GBLP043
Glitter
31.03.2017

Adolf Ahanotu - Sensation

Adolf Ahanotu

Sensation

12inchPMG064LP
PMG
13.04.2017

At a time when bandleaders in Nigeria used titles as an affectation, Dr. Adolf Ahanotu was the real deal. He had a PhD in music compilation and Master's degrees in education and communication. He also played a mean tenor sax, an instrument he mastered touring Owerri with the Mirabels. Ahanotu's scholarly background is apparent in the impeccable arrangements and the way each track is labelled with its musical type. The banging opening track, 'Sensation' is disco, notes the helpful doctor. The legendary 'Ijere' is to be considered Remire or Afro Jazz. 'Litany of Freedom' is reggae, 'Cupid' is rock and 'Tropical Moonlight' classified as the blues. The mandatory ode to the nation, 'Happy Nigeria', is labelled as calypso. But these are not dry, scholarly pieces. 'Sensation' reeks of dance floor freakiness not the hallowed halls of academia. And listen to the pitch bend craziness on 'Injere'. Sure, Dr. Ahanotu had studied the rules. But he wasn't afraid to break them. From the freaked-out opening seconds of the title track you are left in no doubt: The doctor is in the house. Mastered and produced by Goddy Oku. - Peter Moore

Heads Funk - Cold Fire

Heads Funk

Cold Fire

12inchPMG066LP
PMG
13.04.2017

The self-proclaimed funkiest band on the west coast of Africa, the Heads Funk Band, could arguably make that claim for the whole continent. Featuring the slick guitar of Felix 'Feladey' Odey, the slinky drumming of Eddie Offeyi and the swirling keyboard chops of Kevin 'Fortune' Coburn, nobody was funkier. And that's not even taking into account the dance floor monsters they were releasing at the same time as Akwassa. Cold Fire was their second album as the Heads Funk Band. Where their first album, Hard World, was in a hurry to get you on the dance floor, on Cold Fire the funk is given room to breathe. The title track has a dark ghetto groove, straight from the mean streets of New York. 'Got To Know' has a loose, feel good vibe. 'Put On Your Funky Shoes' and the instrumental, 'Funky Port Harcourt' live up to their names. With Feladey laying down a hybrid chicken scratch/wah-wah sound over Eddie Offeyi's assured drumming, and 'Fortune' Coburn supplying the free-range keyboards, this is a band at the height of their powers. Cold Fire is killer stuff and proof that in the mid-seventies Nigeria was producing the funkiest bands in the world. - Peter Moore

Ofo The Rock Company - Live In Europe - Fonk Afrika

OFO The Rock Company (originally known as OFO The Back Company) were Nigeria's first acid-rock band. Blending Hendrix and Deep Purple with shamanism and a pro-black philosophy, they cut their teeth at Fela Kuti's Afrika Shrine, developing a fearsome live reputation that intimidated every other band in Lagos. No one wanted to follow the guys from OFO, not even Fela himself. Lead by the charismatic Larry Ifedioranma, OFO The Rock Company considered themselves a musical cult. Their live shows were a heady mix of mind-melting musicianship, mysticism and theatre. In 1973 the band tour Europe and Fonkafrika gathers together the best of those performance. The moments captured range from small intimate gigs in London, where you can hear the conversation amongst the crowd, to an astonishing gig in East Germany where they played before 900,000 people. The undoubted highlight is the extended prog-rock wig out of 'Ayaya,' recorded at the Berlin gig, before an obviously delighted crowd. See if you can pick out the moment where the band were joined on stage by a long-haired hippy who insisted on playing guitar. They didn't realize it at the time but it was Carlos Santana. It was in Europe that the band fell apart, riven in two by Ifedioranma's increasingly autocratic rule. Fonkafrica remains as a precious testament to what the band did best - playing loud and proud and putting on a show you would never forget. - Peter Moore

Clap! Clap! - Ayi Bebba

Clap! Clap!

Ayi Bebba

2x12inchACRELP006OB
Black Acre
21.11.2016

* After storming the gates with his warmly received 'Tambacounda EP', Clap! Clap! returns to Black Acre to deliver his debut longplayer. 'Tayi Bebba' is a conceptual work that manages to balance a highly cerebral concept with making some good old-fashioned bangers. 'Tayi Bebba' is an album tour of an imagined island; each song representing a location, event or ritual. Sonically, it's a fast moving charge across the soundscape, fusing field recordings and found sound with incredibly surgical drum programming. Flavours of House, Footwork and Hip Hop punctuate your migration with a very specific sound palate, giving this amazing work a cohesive feel.

* About Clap Clap:
Clap! Clap!, aka Cristiano Crisci, is an internationally acclaimed producer and performer. One of Italy's brightest new talents, Clap! Clap! brings together disparate inspirations and styles onto the dancefloor of his mind. His music has been supported by Gilles Peterson and featured in GTA V, Boiler Room, Ninja Tune's Solid Steel mix series, and the FABRIC mix CD series. He has performed his energetic live shows across Europe and Japan and produced for Paul Simon.

* Clap! Clap!'s music is a unique blend of global dance and timeless sounds drawing from nature, traditional music, field recordings and the electronic savvy of modern centres like Chicago and London. At its core is the inspiration of everyday life, what Crisci calls 'the search for new flavours.' This approach anchors Clap! Clap!'s debut album, 2014's 'Tayi Bebba', the soundtrack to a tour of an imaginary island. Paul Simon discovered the album through his son, calling it 'a masterpiece' and leading him to approach Crisci for help with his latest album, 2016's 'Stranger To Stranger'.

Tamil Rogeon - 24 Hours In Lapa

Early airplay and praise from Gilles Peterson, Alex Nut (Eglo), Rob Luis (Tru Thoughts) and Joe Davis (Far Out).

Melbourne composer/violinist Tamil Rogeon (The RAah Project, Harvey Sutherland & Bermuda) brings his most ambitious work to date. That's saying something when your previous works include composing a Stravinsky tribute for a 100-piece orchestra, soundtracking a concert screening of the drawn 2010 AFL football Grand Final for the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra, and the Red Bull Beat Suite, a unique work combining orchestra, turntablists, beatmakers and vocalists including Aloe Blacc and Ladi6! Rogeon's projects have earned acclaim from The Guardian, Resident Advisor and Motor City Drum Ensemble.

24 Hours in Lapa is a mesmerising 12-part song cycle built on Brazilian rhythms, an orchestral score and subtle electronics. Rogeon bases this sweeping, cinematic suite around the tragic story of Joseph Martin, a young expat killed by an off-duty police officer while celebrating his 30th birthday in the Rio party district of Lapa. Rogeon travelled to Rio to record Tiago Loei's percussion group, returned to Melbourne to write the score for Orchestra Victoria, then added vocals from sessions in LA, London, Paris and Melbourne. Guest vocalists include Heidi Vogel (Cinematic Orchestra), earthy soulstress Krystle Warren, globetrotting MC Raashan Ahmad, RAah partner Ryan Ritchie, crooner Bobby Valentine and ethereal backings from Ella Thompson (GL, The Bamboos).E

Lagartijeando - El Gran Podor

Lagartijeando

El Gran Podor

12inchWONDERLP23
Wonder Wheel
27.03.2017

Lagartijeando is the name of producer, musician and DJ Mati Zundel. Born, raised and currently living in a small town on the outskirts of Buenos Aires called Dolores. From a very early age, he was musically curious- experimenting with percussion, charango, guitar, bass, voice, and beyond.

Strongly influenced by his travels through Latin America, Mati's signature psychedelic dance tracks latch onto everything from traditional folk sounds from the Bolivian altiplano to the jungle beats of Brazil. Mati hypnotically fuses his traditional influences (with an emphasis on shaman chant and charango loops) with contemporary electronic beats, creating a sound that once left NPR speechless.

Lagartigeando was signed to the infamous ZZK Records in 2009 (Chancha Via Circuito, Nicola Cruz, etc.) on which he released his first EP Neobailongo- a mix of cumbias with electro and dubstep elements. After releasing the EP, Mati soon took to the road and dove deeper into the music of the Andes, studying charango and various traditional folk styles. In 2012, under the name Mati Zundel, he released his first full length album Amazonico Gravitante, via ZZK as well as Waxploitation (Gnarls Barkley, Danger Mouse) in the U.S.

Some more miles later, Mati released his second LP Cardos Redondo also on Waxploitation, which featured 8 songs recorded across Latin America- an album he calls an 'imaginary sound map of Latin America,'

Freshly into 2017, Mati brings us El Gran Poder via Wonderwheel (Novalima, Alsarah & The Nubatones)- named after an important Aymara festival that takes place in Bolivia and Peru, purely to celebrate family. At these festivals, the community also celebrates their culture and the importance of the collective identity. Like these festivals, the album is a celebratory one, and will tempt any listener out of their seat. The album was recorded in Mati's town, Dolores, outside of Buenos Aires. Once again taking a huge variety of sounds- this time influenced by Brazilian house,afro-brazilian rhythms, and folkloric Andean music. All songs are written and produced by Mati, apart from Lunita, a danceable track written in collaboration with Barrio Lindo.

'This electroacoustic music is part of a series that could be called 'imaginary soundscape'. Unlike 'Presque rien ou le lever du jour au bord de la mer (almost nothing or daybreak by the seaside)', where the landscape narrates itself, here a traveller discovers a landscape which he tries to convey as a musical landscape. Brunhild and I were in the Gorges du Tarn area. We chose to take a small path that was going up a rocky mountain for about ten kilometres.

As one-third of Yellow Magic Orchestra and an Academy Award-winning composer for his work on the soundtrack for The Last Emperor, synth pop innovator Ryuichi Sakamoto is among the most groundbreaking artists to have emerged since the late 70s. A musician's musician, Ryuichi Sakamoto
has created intriguing musical unions with artists such as David Sylvian, Iggy Pop, Tony Williams, Bootsy Collins, Jacques Morelenbaum and many others.

What kind of sounds/music' do I want to listen to'

async is the answer to this question Ryuichi has asked himself for the past several years. This is the album he is the most proud of which synthesizes all of his musical and sound interests. This is a journey through analog synth, the sounds of things and of places, an imaginary soundtrack to an
Andrei Tarkovsky film and many others musical surprises.

Tom Blip - Wrong Guanco/shekere

After the immensely well received start with BLIP001, soon enough DJ's and fans alike were banging down the abstract door of Blip Discs to see what else this new label could have in the pipeline. BLIP002 comes from label head honcho Tom Blip in the form of Wrong Guanco/Shekere.
These tracks are afro, unpredictable, DJ orientated cuts - road tested by DJ's such as Bradley Zero & Werkha, they've already been causing serious movements on dance floors up and down the country. Due for release soon, BLIP002 offers another new, exiting artist to it's roster accompanied by another limited 12' debut.

A - Wrong Guanco
Wrong Guanco is a killer 100mph jam ladened with afro-house hooks, bass-lines, and beats, crafted to raise a peak in the dance. Founded on the chops of a conga player soloing live in the 1970's, the track creatively and tastefully re-presents the samples. Leeds based percussionist Sam Bell was invited to improvise and extend above the original sample, affording the track a culmination of conga virtuosity over a weighty kick drum - a simple but effect dynamite on the dance floor.

B - Shekere
Shekere is a murky, nocturnal, afro-techno journey, already well-trod by cheering and whooping dance-floor dwellers taken by the tracks slew of clattering drums and delicious sonic trickery. A fine and inimitable addition to any techno mix, with a ponderous sub, and climaxing in the unleashing of a bodacious African drum/vocal, untamed and uncaged - replay buttons at the ready.

In the early 80's, violence take over Jamaica and many artists left the island included Coxsone Dodd. He opened Studio One in New York at 3135 Fulton Street.

Few years later, legendary member of The Gaylads, B.B. Seaton, went to New-York to visit Coxsone. B.B. Seaton wrote 'Dancing In The Moonlight' and organized a studio session. He built a riddim close to Earons' classic 'Land Of Hunger'. Then he went to famous Blank Tape studio to mix the tunes. The result is a huge groovy electro disco reggae dub tune.

You will get a seven minutes extended mix on A-side with a perfect transition between vocal and version. The B-side contains one version, and a drum percussions instrumental. This reissue was made from the original master tape and the spirit of the first artwork.

Charlemagne Palestine - Godbear

Black Truffle Records present the first official vinyl reissue of Charlemagne Palestine's Godbear

- Godbear is a 1987 solo piano recording originally scheduled to sit alongside Sonic Youth and Swans in the catalogue of Glenn Branca's Neutral Records

- Revisiting his signature piano style in 1987 after several years focusing on visual art, Godbear presents three distinct variations that demonstrate the development of Palestine's piano music performed on the Bösendorfer Imperial Grand Piano, the 'Rolls Royce' of pianos

- A classic release, and one that, because of the variety of approaches surveyed within, serves as an ideal introduction to Palestine's ecstatic and mysterious sound world.

- Godbear is presented in a deluxe gatefold sleeve designed by Stephen O'Malley and has been remastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M, Berlin.

Black Truffle is pleased to present the first vinyl release of Charlemagne Palestine's Godbear, a 1987 solo piano recording originally scheduled to sit alongside Sonic Youth and Swans in the catalogue of Glenn Branca's Neutral Records but eventually released on CD by the Dutch Barooni label in 1998. Although Palestine has worked in an enormous variety of media, his long form performances for solo piano are perhaps his most acclaimed works. Palestine immersed himself in the study of overtones throughout the 1960s, working first with carillons and then with electronic synthesis, searching for the 'golden sound'. Beginning in the early 1970s he continued his exploration of the complexities hidden within seemingly simple tones and intervals on the Bösendorfer Imperial Grand Piano, the 'Rolls Royce' of pianos. With the piano's sustain pedal constantly depressed, Palestine hammers out rapidly repeated notes, allowing a complex cloud of overtones to rise above the percussive texture of the struck keys. Initially working with simple intervals such as octaves and fifths, Palestine gradually expanded the harmonic range of his piano performances over the years, while still retaining their ecstatically single-minded nature.

Revisiting his signature piano style in 1987 after several years focusing on visual art, Godbear presents three distinct variations that demonstrate the development of his piano music after the classic recordings of the early 1970s. Occupying the entire first side, The Lower Depths stages a slow descent from the piano's mid-range to the Bösendorfer's cavernous additional low octave, building into a thundering swarm of booming overtones. Breaking entirely with the stereotype of clinical minimalism, Palestine's journey to the depths embraces passages of darkly romantic melody before slowly ascending to its starting point. The version of Strumming Music performed here condenses the developmental arc of the piece into eleven minutes, fanning out from a single octave to a complex harmonic wash that calls to mind Palestine's enthusiasm for Debussy and Ravel. Timbral Assault is like an evil twin of Strumming Music, transforming its insistency and harmonic complexity into aggressive intensity and creeping dissonance, foreshadowing Palestine's later collaborations with Christoph Heemann. A classic release, and one that, because of the variety of approaches surveyed within, serves as an ideal introduction to Palestine's ecstatic and mysterious sound world.

Niama Makalou Et African Soul Band - Kognokoura / Kognokoura - Daphni's Part 2 Edit

Sofrito present a unique slice of afro-disco from the celebrated griot, Niama Makalou, recorded in the late 70s.

Descended from a family of griots (traditional Malian praise singers), Niama Makalou moved to France in the mid 70s where she cut this, her one and only vinyl release. At the time Paris (like much the rest of the world) was swept up in disco fever, so along with a group of Malian musicians the date was set to cut a piece of disco, griot style. The resulting mixture of off kilter hand claps, raw string arrangements, Balafon flourishes and Bambara vocals combine with a heavy disco groove to produce a one-off piece of cross-cultural dancefloor mayhem.
On the flip Daphni (aka Caribou) crafts an extended version that distills it into a stripped down and dubbed out groove.

Madmua Records
24.05.2017

This EP was originally released in 1977 by Audio y Vídeo through the label Iris. These bossa instrumental songs were composed by Juan Muro (Loeme is one of his pseudonims) and were recorded by great musicians like Rafael Martínez (guitar). The first (and only) release was very limited and the copies were sent exclusively to radio stations, discotheques and clubs. Because of that have surfaced so few records.
There are only 400 copies available of this reissue. All the songs have been remastered by Ángel Álvarez and each record includes a postcard signed by Juan Muro.

Vetson' Androy // Mavandeza - Jaojoby // Taratasy Maitso

Deep, storming Salegy sounds from Madagascar.

Salegy is the electrified updating of the traditional Antsa style from the north-west of the island — 6/8 rhythms, layered with percussion and call-and-response vocals — and the Vetson' Androy group one of its most popular proponents.
From 1978, Mavandeza has the heady urgency of killer Fela — with two women singers out front, psychedelic organ and prowling-lion bass.

The flip is from a decade later, by Malagasy superstar Eusebe Jaojaby — rough and tough dancefloor worries, with a mazy string-line, mash-it-down percussion and lilting flute.

Another sizzler from Sofrito.

  • People's Republic
  • Fubica

What initially started as idea for a DJ-duo project quickly turned into a new production outlet for German producer David Hanke. He is well known for his Northern Jazz, Funk and Afrofunk productions under various monikers ever since his first release back in 2008 of which the most recognized surely is his Renegades Of Jazz-alias.
After starting to fully embrace the Afrofunk vibe with his 2016-released Renegades Of Jazz album 'Moyo Wangu' as well as two Dem Juju Poets singles in the same year it's now about time to release 'Liberated Thoughts' - the longplay debut for Dem Juju Poets which is scheduled for April 2017.
Having spent an influential part of his childhood in Arusha, Tanzania and engrained the music of East Africa, his sound combines these influences with modern, more club-orientated electronic Afrofunk productions which defines the core sound of Dem Juju Poets.
With 'Liberated Thoughts' Hanke refines his Afrofunk vision for 2017 informed by his experience as a DJ in venues all over Europe which naturally led to a more floor functional production approach.
The opening title 'At The Jubilee Gardens' serves a sweet equatorial coast sound combined with heavy drums and a seductive bassline followed by 'Stonetown Shakedown' with a positive and energetic theme, chants and a busy brass section to set the dancefloor in motion.
'Bagamoyo' has a distinctive sound with it's electronics and a laid back character followed by 'Juju Chant #1' which samples 'Mantis Revolver' by Seattle based trio 'Afrocop' whilst the title track 'Liberated Thoughts' with it's raw but floor friendly combination of drums and vocals leads back to the center of the dancefloor.
The title 'Mala Mali' describes the curse of money, whether you have much of it or even nothing. Fusing a cinematic, widescreen trumpet arrangement with vintage synths and rolling drums - a digression into slightly more psychedelic Afrofunk territories. Furthermore, 'People's Republic' is built on a more Soul based idea with Jazz flutes and a vibrant horn section.
'Fubica', a peculiar theme for bumpy streets, provides broken beats, a mellow Jazz guitar and leaping sax followed by the second interlude 'Juju Chant #2'. The following 'Barabara' was released as a prequel single to 'Liberated Thoughts' and perfectly complements the albums flow..
With 'Poacher's Lookout' the psychedelic touch is revisited again, this time creating a tense overall atmosphere, with additional hypnotic scats and some darker electronics. The album closes with the Dub-inspired slow groove of 'Flowers For Lions', a beautiful ending for 'Liberated Thoughts'.
