Manu Dibango - Sun Explosion - Cd

Next up on Africa Seven is the second instalment of our series of Manu Dibango CD re-issues from the Fiesta label. Manu Dibango is probably the most famous musician from Cameroon and quite possibly one of the most internationally well-known African musicians ever. Manu Dibango is a most versatile musician, having played and recorded almost every style of music you care to mention - soul, reggae, jazz, spirituals, blues, African, electro.

Manu DiBango originally trained in classical piano, His musical career began in Brussels and Paris in the 1950. The 1960s finds him in Congo as a member of African Jazz led by Joseph Kabasele (Le Grand Kalle). He formed his own band in Cameroon in 1963, moving to Paris in 1965. His international breakthrough came in 1972 with international hit "Soul Makossa". This went on to be inspire the chant in Michael Jacksons "Wanna Be Startin Something" (and many others).

For the "Sun Explosion" album we are off to 1978, Paris. Six years after is international breakthrough with Soul Makossa, Manu is on a roll after scoring a couple of films the previous year Manu returns to the studio with long term collaborator and producer Rolande Le Couviour and Claude Achalle engineering to work on an artist album.

The albums four tracks, which are all lengthy, straddle a series of styles from the lazy, reaggae jazz of opener "Anty", to the more traditional "Manu" afro-funk-jazz sound of "Matumba". Remember its 1978 and Disco is in the air. Spin the record over to the B-side and you hear the sounds of the times have made their way into string epic, funky "Motapo" and the driving brass and funky xylophone on "Sun Explosion". A record that sounds surprisingly at home in todays current musical climate.

The Cuban singer Ibrahim Ferrer emerged as perhaps the most popular star of the Buena Vista Social Club ™ phenomenon. World Circuit is proud to announce the release of his final album 'Mi Sueño' (My Dream) the project he dreamed of realising all his life - an album devoted to the most meltingly romantic of all Cuban styles - the bolero.
'Mi Sueño' is an intimate arranged by Roberto Fonseca, the remarkable young pianist with whom he had developed a deep musical understanding. Recorded in Havana in 2004, the year before he died, with a wonderful small group that included Manuel Galbán on guitar and Cachaíto López on bass, the album is a very personal take on the bolero style - deeply traditional and at the same time startlingly modern. Full of passion and tenderness but still with an inimitable and irrepressible swing, Ibrahim sculpts familiar songs into fresh and atmospheric creations that are uniquely his own.
As Ibrahim said, I have just one thing left to tell you all. We dream together and we will keep doing it. If my days ended tomorrow I would leave very satisfied in having achieved my wish, the wish was that dream: to sing a bolero.'
A labour of love and the realisation of a dream, 'Mi Sueño' presents Ibrahim Ferrer as one of the world's great bolero singers - the way he always wanted to be remembered.

Lambert - Stay In The Dark

Lambert

Stay In The Dark

12inch4019589000475
Polydor Germany
11.09.2015

Various - Rough Guide To Brazilian Jazz
  • 1: Fernando Moura & Ary Dias: Mexidão
  • 2: Höröya: Mansa Fela
  • 3: Goma-Laca Feat. Karina Buhr: Minervina
  • 4: Tássia Reis: Meu RapJazz
  • 5: Thiago Franca: Um Samba Para John Coltrane
  • 6: Nomade Orquestra: Samurai
  • 7: Iconili: O Rei De Tupanga
  • 8: Dom Salvador Sextet: Gafieira

Mention Brazilian jazz to most music fans and the inevitable bossa nova images flood into view: the beach, the female whisper-vocal, the rimshot snare drumming, the chord-plucked acoustic guitar, possibly a little mutedbatucada percussion, breathy alto saxophone and cabaret-vamp piano. It's an image ineluctably stuck in the 1960s, when most aspiring Brazilian musicians looked to America's West Coast 'cool jazz' scene for inspiration, listening to artists such as the Modern Jazz Quartet, Chet Baker, Paul Winter, Jimmy Giuffre and Stan Getz.
Of course there were Brazilian jazz musicians in the 1960s whose work was highly original and owed little or nothing to bossa nova, obvious examples being Victor Assis Brasil and Dom Salvador, the only two 'old-school' players present in this compilation - their presence I hope demonstrating the continuity of Brazilian jazz explorations way beyond bossa-jazz. There were also artists drawing inspiration from native Indian, regional folkloric and liturgical sources: Hermeto Pascoal and Egberto Gismonti made (and still make) thrilling and bizarre jazz that owed nothing to 'conventional' Brazilian jazz, or indeed 'conventional' jazz of any kind.
Brazil's millennial musicians, however, use a different palette from that which has gone before. Disillusioned with the vapidity of manufactured national pop - pagode, axé, lambada, brega and the rest - they started digging for rare soul, funk, reggae and hip hop records for inspiration, an entry-point to the Blue Note and soul-jazz classics of America's east coast, as well as richer meat - Sun Ra, Roland Kirk, Pharaoh Sanders and afrobeat. They also started listening more to European jazz: a fascinating 'full-circle' effect, because earl twentieth century choro jazz was strongly influenced by European music in template if not in tempo.
The large majority of players on this compilation are under 30 years old, most from São Paulo and Rio De Janeiro. Many have played with each other and are familiar with each other's work - as were Rio's 1960s bossa nova community. But the sheer range, energy and boisterousness of the approach is thrilling.
Iconili, Nomade Orquestra, Höröya and Bixiga 70 are essentially gafieira (dancehall) orchestras - with all the discipline, skill and 'listening to each other' that it implies - playing from a different songbook: a repertoire inspired by Nigeria, Guinea, Ethiopia, the Caribbean and New York. Thiago França's sharp-elbowed genius makes itself felt in his solo work as well as in the more modal Space Charanga and European fans may know Thiago from the touring combo Metá-Metá. Juçara Marçal and Karina Buhr's voicings explore similar territory to Carla Bley while Tulipa Ruiz's sparkling Roy Ayers-style jazz-funk contribution wouldn't be out of place on the 1980s London dancefloors of Dingwall's, the WAG or the Electric Ballroom.
There had to be a hip hop track - so many Brazilian millennials got into jazz via hip hop - and new teenage sensation Tassia Reis was a no-brainer.
And it's no mistake that the collection is sandwiched between contributions from young Turks Fernando Moura & Ary Dias and (for this compiler, at least) probably the most complete mainstream jazz musician that Brazil has ever produced, Victor Assis Brasil.
Innovative music is alive and kicking in millennial Brazil: although it never really left the building.

Johnnie Frierson - Have You Been Good To Yourself
  • 1: Have You Been Good To Yourself
  • 2: Heavenly Father, You've Been Good
  • 3: iracles
  • 4: Out Here On Your Word
  • 5: You Were Sent To This World
  • 6: Woke Up This Morning
  • 7: Trust In The Lord

* Re-mastered from the original cassette

* Never before released on LP or Digital

* Includes download card

* Hand numbered Stoughton tip-on' jacket

* Liner notes by Memphis native Andria Lisle

Followers of our output might have a pang of recognition on reading the name Frierson. That was the surname of Wendy Rene, whose work was collected into the 2012 LITA anthology After Laughter Comes Tears, and indeed, Johnnie Frierson is Wendy's brother - a fellow member of her mid-'60s Stax four-piece The Drapels.

But Have You Been Good To Yourself will come as a surprise to anyone expecting more of the beat-driven R&B Johnnie and his sibling produced - including that compilation's much-sampled title track. A mix of spoken word and gospel songs laid down direct to cassette, these ultra-rare home recordings draw from Johnnie's religious upbringing and his history in the music business, which was interrupted in 1970 when he was sent to fight in Vietnam.

Crate digger Jameson Sweiger found Have You Been Good To Yourself and a companion album, Real Education, released under the name Khafele Ojore Ajanaku in a Memphis thrift store, but it was noticeably Frierson's work. They hadn't made it far - they would originally have been sold at corner stores and music festivals in the Memphis area, where Frierson continued to perform and host a gospel radio show, all the while working as a mechanic, laborer and teacher.

The seven songs on Have You Been Good To Yourself are overtly religious, some, such as Out Here On Your Word,' are strident and faithful, others, like the self-questioning Have You Been Good To Yourself,' are more meditative. They reflect the difficult situation that Frierson was in when recording, shell-shocked from his time in the military and grieving the untimely death of his son. "He was really trying to find his way," remembers Frierson's daughter Keesha in Andria Lisle's liner notes. "And writing and making music were a way out for him."

Remastered and released professionally for the first time, the message spread by Frierson - who passed away in 2010 - remains undimmed.

Sannhet - Young Death

Corking compilation of hard to find and unreleased material by Brooklyn-based metal group Sannhet - all appearing on vinyl for the first time - who debut on Hospital Productions with the explorative dynamics and wordless but lyrically emotive
arrangements of Young Death.
At an edgeland juncture of post-rock, noise and metal, theirs might not be a sound that these ears are overly familiar with, but we can tell a great record when we hear one, and this is one of the strongest of its ilk to cross our paths this year.Rather than an album proper, the band and Hospital Productions have assembled a nine-part series of portraits of Sannhet's early phase, dating as far back as 2008 and right up to their debut album, Known Flood in 2013.
The A-side banks the escalating, thunderous post-rock/death metal force of their self-released Sannhet EP cassette of 2013, along with a more expansive, unreleased piece from the same session, whilst the B-side holds both parts of the Lion's Eye EP's pelting drama,
plus two unreleased pieces from 2008, a slowerengima of acousmatiuc samples and juggernaut post-rock surges, and the spirit rubbling noise attrition of Rapid Transit.
If you were feeling last year's Clay Rendering records, or yearn for a post rock with metal gusto, not sappy cliche or neck-cricking floppy fringes, this is your lot..

Y-bayani - Get Away

Y-Bayani

Get Away

7"-VinylPH45007
Philophon
18.07.2016

Y-Bayani is Ghana's uprising Fanti-reggae artist. He was discovered by Philophon in Ebo Taylor's hometown Saltpond, where he survived as a clock doctor. With his song "Asembi Ara Amba" he was featured on the highly acclaimed debut "Invisible Joy" by the Polyversal Souls. The success of that song opened the door for his first release under his sonorous own name: Y-Bayani.

"Get Away" is a swinging up-tempo beat with a bouncy bass and a haunting vocal performance on top. "Obar No Ni" on the other hand brings you down with a slowly driving rub-a-dub beat. Both tunes have been produced by Max Weissenfeldt and Stibbo Spitzmüller at Berlin's Joy Sound Studios.

Mary Afi Usuah - African Woman

Mary Afi Usuah

African Woman

12inchPMG014LP
PGM Rec.
01.08.2016

Mary Afi Usuah trained as an a opera singer at the prestigious St Cecilia Academy in Rome and spent 13 years touring Europe with artists like Duke Ellington and Deep Purple. She matched vocal chops with Robert Plant performing with Led Zeppelin and blew away the top names on the Lagos scene when she returned to Nigeria. She also broke a few hearts with her killer smile, if some accounts are to be believed. African Woman marshals these experiences into an exceptionally powerful and diverse album. From the Tina Turner stomp of 'What's A Woman To Do', to the Aretha-style musings of the title track, Mary takes everything she learned on the road to tell her story about her continent in a distinctly African manner. The boys from Akwassa were on hand to ensure that everything was kept extra tight and funky. Mary Afi Usuah only released two albums but she is undeniably one of the greatest female singers the African continent has produced. African Woman serves as her legacy, along with the remarkable number of Nigerian female singers she mentored and inspired. - Peter Moore

"I met MARY AFI USUAH in 1979 while I was the lead singer with TEE MAC COLLECTION. We were based at SURULERE NIGHT CLUB in Lagos, Nigeria. She came in from Calabar in the Cross river state. She was a beauty with her afro hair and had a very strong voice and very powerful on stage. Her performance was electrifying. She did a lot of shows with us and together we got the crowd rocking. A very dark complexioned lady, she was full of life and love. Her smiles would sweep any man off her feet instantly and I immediately recognized a talent that go all over the world. Her music is a blend of African rhythms, soul and funk with heavy bassline. I am glad to let you know that the vynil you have in your hands now contains music that will tickle all ears for a very long time. Happy listening."

Arranged by Mike Theodore and prolific guitarist Dennis Coffey—who later worked together on Rodriguez's Cold Fact—1968's The Forest of My Mind is a dose of soul-soothing mellow filled with captivating pastoral odes which try on a variety of period styles in craftsman-like perfection. The album is a unique synthesis of pop, folk and psychedelic sounds flecked with a touch of Donovan Leitch-like whimsy which is steered into righteous and refined waters by future Motown staff producer Clay McMurray (Gladys Knight & The Pips, David Ruffin, The Temptations, The Four Tops) aided by the cream of the Motor City's R&B/soul sessionmen of the time.

However, despite the awe-inspiring sounds this masterpiece is bursting with, it didn't receive the adoration and accolades it rightly deserved in its day (due to some unfortunate flightiness from the original label). One listen to the grandeur of The Forest of My Mind will have you joined in enthusiastic sentiment with project producer McMurray that the world must see how "simply wonderful this hidden jewel is."

'The music has come into my life when I was about 9 years old, thanks to one of my sisters' tape with songs by Bob Marley and The Wailers. So I switched from reggae to dub, from dub to jazz, from jazz to radical improvisation in a moment. Now I'm 33, and after producing pretty much any kind of music, I want to put together what I still like of dub music with that of the south of Europe, which is the place where I grew up, melting everything together with vintage equipments and working with modern machines at the same time. Playing and producing this music has been therapeutic for my head. Making all this known is for me like seeding again the love for music without any distinction.' Andrea Gabriele 1981 - 2015

Hackney Colliery Band - Sharpener

* On the back of two hugely successful albums and almost constant touring, HCB's new LP 'Sharpener' shows the band on more confident form than ever, with powerful new electronic elements and a dance floor sensibility adding to the jazz, rock and soul for which they are known.

* Building on the strength of their critically-acclaimed original writing, 'Sharpener' has a powerful set of originals at its core, alongside a trio of leftfield covers in the shape of Nirvana's 'Heart-Shaped Box', Kwabs' 'Wrong or Right' and Three Trapped Tigers' 'Cramm'. It's a record that resounds with humour, charm and the hum of the glorious variety of musical genres that emanate from their hometown.

* Album opener 'Jump Then Run' echoes the sound of the legendary Moondog, while 'Gather Your Wits' is a roof-raising rumble of brass and rebellious behaviour. 'Wrong or Right', a soulful version of London soul star Kwabs' great tune, comes to life with juicy menace before 'The Morning', an uplifting anthemic arrangement, builds into joyous hedonism. 'When You Know' gives space to the band's superb jazz chops, while album title track 'Sharpener 'is a big, bold, brassy and utterly mesmerising affair.

* It's perhaps the band's outstanding arrangements which sets them apart. From the intricacies of 'Timelapse' to the introspection of 'Reawake', from the punky rock groove of I't's Normally Bigger' (based on a true story) to the rave jazz of 'Bread and Circuses', the arrangements throughout showcase writers Olly Blackman, Luke Christie and Steve Pretty's contrasting styles, able to switch from screaming energy to moody introspection, from cutting-edge jazz to dancefloor rave, and proving that Hackney Colliery Band is not just another party brass band blowing through the usual pop covers.

* Alongside main stage sets at festivals like Field Day and Love Supreme and collaborations with Amy Winehouse, Fyfe Dangerfield, Eliza Doolittle, Jamie Cullum, Andreya Triana, Williams Fairey Band, Rhodes and DJ Yoda, they have performed live sessions on BBC Radio 2 and Jazz FM, and their performances have been festured on BBC Two (The Culture Show), Sky Arts (Brass Band Wonderland) and live at the BRIT, Mercury and Mobo Awards.

* With 'Sharpener' their most exciting work to date, a tour taking in more venues than ever before and a collaborative EP out in the autumn, 2016 looks set to be a huge year for Hackney Colliery Band.

Jon Mueller - Tongues

Jon Mueller

Tongues

12inchRPLX005
Rhythmplex
24.06.2016

Since the early 2000s, the work of Jon Mueller has examined various translations between ideas and rhythm. His records about spiritualist movements and impermanence consciousness were maximalist displays of bombastic trance signifying life--affirming energy, while his earlier focus on vibrating drumheads revealed the sonically electrical qualities of acoustic instruments; an unexpected current within dormant material.

Similarly, his new solo effort, Tongues, is an invigorating and ecstatic record of transference. Within it, voices of desperate meaning speak and howl in unknown languages, while vibrating skin, string, and metal transport them from their obscure origin. Together they project a kind of bodily singing of the world set to pummeling and relentless rhythms.

Arranged and performed by Mueller using various bass drums, percussion and his own voice, the record also features contributions from Cory Allen and William Ryan Fritch. Allen's harmonium, tanpura and ceremonial breath (learned from shamans in the Amazon rainforest) add a tonal depth and trance--like energy. Fritch, who many will recognize from Mueller's previous Death Blues Ensemble record, adds sarangi, played through a piano as a sort of resonant amplifier, creating a ghostly melodic sense that enriches the record's driving rhythms with a sense of timelessness.

Ogoya Nengo And The Dodo Women's Group - On Mande

Ever since her childhood Ogoya Nengo, baptized Anastasia Oluoch in about 1940, would excite listeners around her village with her singing abilities. Very soon she had received her stage name "Ogoya Nengo" which in Dholuo (language) means: the most precious and expensive singer in the region.

Her debut album "Rang'ala" (Honest Jon's/London) came out in 2014 and was recorded and produced by Sven Kacirek and Stefan Schneider at various spots around Rang'ala Village, Siaya County, Kenya. Now "OGOYA NENGO AND DODO WOMEN'S GROUP" release her second album "ON MANDE" on the new TAL imprint, launched by Stefan Schneider (Kreidler/to rococo rot/ Roedelius Schneider) in early 2016.

"ON MANDE" presents a even richer instrumenation than its predecessor. We hear Nyatiti lute, Asili flute, Orutu strings and Box guitar (acoustic guitar) which are swiftly interwoven with fierce rhythms of Ohangla drums, various types of shakers and the scintillating vocal parts of Ogoya and the Dodo women choir. Dodo is a popular traditional female singing style of the Luo communities in the Siaya region, western Kenya. Men are welcome to support the singers on drums, stringed instruments and flutes.

The music on this album might have its origin in the past but in fact it is a contemporary version of traditional folk music which is unique in that it is a living culture, a continously developing art form and therefore has its place clearly in the present times.

Sven Kacirek and Stefan Schneider were fascinated by this music from first encounter while meeting Ogoya Nengo back in 2013 and decided to record her music almost like in a concert situation, without any overdubbing and additional effects. Both musicians with their individual backgrounds in Electronic Music and Jazz respectively, found access to Dodo music through its strong sense of repetitiveness and its complex rhythm structures which they drew parallels from to various forms of contemporary electronic music they are familiar with. After a few more visits in Siaya, Kacirek and Schneider gained a deeper understanding of the vast diversity of Luo music an its insaparable relations with everyday life.

Since 2011 Kacirek and Schneider are travelling to Kenya to record with musicians in various different places in Kenya. More recently they have returned to rural villages in Siaya County, where various forms of Luo music, such as Dodo, Ohangla, Benga, Nyatiti are widely practised.

The recording for "ON MANDE" took place in a simple clay building with a nice room sound right next to Ogoyas house. Most of the songs on the album are appraisal songs to honor family members, people of the community, like the best electrician, the most popular wrestler, etc.The song Elias Owino", a famous chief of the region, tells about his far sighted politics. "Oyano Ojwang" praises the power of a magic potion which brings back a lost lover. Other songs are played at weddings or funerals or at drinking parties. Music to "give people a good moral" as Ogoya once put it.

OGOYA NENGO AND DODO WOMEN'S GROUP will play their third tour through Europe in may and june 2016.

Philippe Chany - Rive Gauche

Philippe Chany is a French songwriter, film music composer and producer from the town of Gap in the southeastern region of the Hautes-Alpes. He formed Love International with Philippe Krootchey and Fred Versailles in 1981 and released the #1 boogie disco hit single Dance On The Groove And Do The Funk'. The B-side of this single featured a cover of Dave Brubeck's Unsquare Dance' released as a single in late 1981 credited solely to Chany.

In 1983 Philippe went into Studio O.M. to record songs for his solo project. The album titled Rive Gauche' was released in 1983 by Polydor Records. Philippe was inspired by experimental film composers Michel Magne, Ennio Morricone, Lalo Schifrin. Songs are a fusion of Chanson synth pop, experimental Italo funk, majestic balearic disco and arabesque instrumentals. He enjoyed making blends, combining rhythms with scratches, utilizing a Roland TR-808, Jupiter 8 and various Akai samplers. All the songs are recited in French and English and revolve around themes of love and mysticism plus a passage read from Antonin Artaud's 1925 poem L'ombilic des Limbes'.

All songs have been remastered for vinyl by George Horn at Fantasy Studios in Berkeley. Housed in an exact replica of the original jacket, which features a photo of Philippe by Jean-Baptiste Mondino on the front and a painting of him by Nadia Back on the back. Each copy includes a 11x11 insert with lyrics and archive photo. Fiction talks right to your brain, Never the same...Be different!' (Philippe Chany, 1983)

Afro-Asian Exotica! Jungle beats and lush rhythms from the famed film and television composer. An early stereo marvel from the original 1958 tapes!
Takashi "Tak" Shindo was one of the most prominent purveyors of that gorgeous genre known as Exotica, a magnificent and surreal style of music which took the sounds of cultures at the time unknown or mysterious and blended it into a swingy, sexy stew. As a Japanese-American, Shindo brought a unique cultural perspective to the proceedings -- he combined the sounds of his own heritage into a brilliantly orchestrated shabu-shabu that made him a highly in-demand arranger and composer (Shindo would later become known for his TV scores, including Gunsmoke).
Nowadays, we'd call it "appropriation," but at the time Exotica knew no such boundaries -- anybody's culture and sound was fair game, often leading to unusual and thrilling combinations of sound. Mganga! is Shindo's exploration of African sounds -- it's obvious that his knowledge of African and afro-Cuban musical forms was based not only on a knowledge of traditional native music but also from soundtracks and "fantasy" versions of music from the African diaspora. Drums and congas abound, as do guttural chants and thrilling Cuban rhythms (and the ever-present exotica sound effects!). But Shindo's own love of Japanese sounds crop up here and there too -- listen for Japanese scales and traditional instruments such as the koto.
Modern Harmonic presents the thrilling Mganga! the way it was meant to be heard -- thrillingly mastered from the master tapes, pressed onto gorgeous colored vinyl and wrapped in restored packaging that reproduces the groundbreaking neo-tribal graphics. Pour yourself an exotic cocktail, turn the lights down low and let Tak Shindo take you to his own crazy, sexy version of Africa!

Baris Manco & Kardaslar Ekspress - Istanbul 1978

Baris Manço had been in the Turkish music scene for 20 years at the time of this concert in late 1978. He had given his first concert in 1958 and recorded his first single in 1962, finally having a big hit in 1970 with his 18th Single 'Daglar Daglar'. After enjoying a couple of years at the top he was called to do his army service in early 1972 and apart from 3 pre-recorded singles he was away from the music scene for over 18 months. With a dip in his career after the army service Baris Manço was at a crossroads at the time of this concert, apart from 1 single in early 76 he had not had a Turkish release since 1975's '2023' LP. This performance was just before his second big explosion with the 'Yeni Bir Gun' LP the following year, the first side of this album is taken up with songs that would form side A of that album, While side B is a look back on his career with songs from the middle part of his career (70-76), a studio version on this potpourri of songs would find themselves on the Disko Manço Album released in 1980.

Dele Sosimi - You No Fit Touch Am In Dub (feat. Prince Fatty & Nostalgia 77)

"A dub version could be a stone killer", predicted David Hutchison in his 4 star Mojo review of 'You No Fit Touch Am'. And here it is: Afrobeat icon Dele Sosimi's recent album gloriously re-imagined in dub by two production masters, Prince Fatty and Nostalgia 77.

"It was such a rush to have Prince Fatty and Nostalgia 77 work their magic on Dele's album. With Fatty bringing the spirit of 80s On-U Sound, Mikey Dread and Mad Professor, and Ben Nostalgia having mixed Dele's original LP, this was always going to be something very special." Dom Servini (Wah Wah 45s)

'You No Fit Touch Am', Dele Sosimi's first full-length album in almost a decade, was released by Wah Wah 45s in May 2015. It represented where Dele is today - something of an untouchable force in the music scene that he has always been such a vital part of. The album provided a musical representation of Dele's strong socio-political opinions, as well as delivering classic song-writing that could have come straight out of 1970s Lagos.

Born in Hackney, East London, but soon to return to his parents' native Nigeria at the age of four, Dele Sosimi was schooled and raised in Fela Anikulapo Kuti's shadow at the height of early 70s Afrobeat. Having been chosen by Fela to join his band at somewhat of a tender age, he was still a young man when sharing

Fela's Glastonbury stage in 1984, and became both Musical Director for both Fela's Egypt 80 and FemiKuti's Positive Force. After Fela's passing in 1997, Dele went on to concentrate on his own solo career and, with diligent patience, carved out his own Afrobeat crown. In London, where he now resides, his Afrobeat Vibration all-nighters are charged with his passion, labours and his unrelenting spirit.

Hailu Mergia & Dahlak Band - Wede Harer Guzo

(June Cargo Collective Title) Third ATFA reissue for Hailu Mergia! Super-rare, first time available outside Ethiopia! // (Hailu Mergia) is not quite like anything else you've ever heard.' Pitchfork // In the years since Shemonmuanaye, Mergia has revamped his touring career, playing festivals and clubs worldwide, including a recent tour supporting Beirut. By 1978, Addis Ababa's nightlife was facing challenges. The ruling Derg regime imposed curfews, banning citizens from the streets after midnight until 6:00 am. But that didn't stop some people from dancing and partying through the night. Bands would play from evening until daybreak and people would stay at the clubs until curfew was lifted in the morning. ! One key denizen of Addis' musical golden age, Hailu Mergia, was preparing a follow-up to his seminal Tche Belew LP with the famed Walias Band. It was the band's only full-length record and it had been a success. But his Hilton house band colleagues were a bit tied up recording cassettes with different vocalists. Still Mergia, amidst recording and gigs with the Walias, was also eager to make another recording of his instrumental-focused arrangements. So he went to the nearby Ghion Hotel, another upmarket outpost with a popular nightclub. Dahlak Band was the house band at Ghion at the time. Together they made this tape Wede Harer Guzo right there in the club during the band's afternoon rehearsal meetings, with sessions lasting three days.! Dahlak Band catered to a slightly more youthful, local audience, while Mergia's main gig with the Walias at Addis' swankiest hotel had a mixed audience that included wealthy Ethiopians, foreign diplomats and older folks from abroad. Therefore, their sets featured lighter fare during dinnertime and a less rollicking selection of jazz and r&b. Meanwhile, Dahlak was known more for the mainly soul and Amharic jams they served up for hours two nights a week to a younger crowd. ! Mergia released Wede Harer Guzo ( Journey to Harer,' a city in eastern Ethiopia) with Sheba Music Shop, which was located in the Piazza district but has long since shut down. His cassette copy is the only known source we could find. Jessica Thompson at Coast Mastering managed to restore the recording to clean up layers of hiss, flutter and distorted frequencies, made worse by years of storage. Although there are some remaining sonic artifacts of the era's recording and cassette duplicating quality, this reissue captures the band's inimitable vibe. ! Recalling the audience's positive reaction to Wede Harer Guzo's novel arrangements, he says it sold well and found many fans. However, as no trace of the tape can be found online, there's no indication as to why the cassette appears largely forgotten until now. !

Solomonic Reggae Star, Bunny Wailer & Solomonic All Stars - Solomonic Singles, Pt. 2: Rise & Shine (1977-1986) Cd

At the same time that Neville 'Bunny Wailer' Livingston recorded his debut solo long playing masterpiece, 'Blackheart Man', he was also creating a series of singles for his own Solomonic label. These records were every bit as good, at times even better, but they have never been released outside of Jamaica. Until now...,

It is next to impossible to ever overstate the importance of The Wailers to the history of Jamaican music and, as the last surviving member of the group, Bunny Wailer rightly regards himself as the sole keeper of their history ever mindful of the group's exalted position in the story of reggae music and the importance of their legacy. In 2010 Dub Store were proud to be able to work with Bunny on re-releasing a selection of his earliest recordings for the Solomonic label, lovingly restored and presented in reproduction sleeves and labels, on limited edition seven and twelve inch singles. Now, taking another step forward, we are more than proud to present Bunny's timeless music on two beautifully packaged CD's and double LP's. Bunny's first solo album, 'Blackheart Man' originally released in 1976 on his own Solomonic label in Jamaica and on Island in the UK, is one of the undisputed all time classics of Jamaican music and established Bunny Wailer as a highly respected, world renowned artist in his own right. During this period Bunny also produced a series of singles released in Jamaica and the UK in strictly limited quantities without the benefit of international distribution, that are every bit as good and, in some cases, even better than this awesome debut long player. Original copies have subsequently become highly prized, and highly priced, collector's items. "Classic rarities" is an overused and abused term too often employed to describe average records that failed to sell on their initial release but both 'Tread Along' and 'Rise & Shine' are packed from beginning to end with a searing selection of some of the greatest and hardest to find reggae records ever produced. 'Tread Along' opens, naturally enough, with 'Tread Along' from 1969, one of the last singles for The Wailers' own Wail N Soul M label, and runs through the first release on the Solomonic label, 'Searching For Love' also known as 'Search For I', 'Bide Up' released as 1974 drew to a close, a radical reworking of 'Pass It On' and a marked contrast to the version on The Wailers' 'Burnin'', album, 'Life Line' and the prophetic 'Arabs Oil Weapon' kept the pressure on as Bunny began outlining the flawless 'Blackheart Man' album. Each release was a certified classic in its own right. Peter Tosh's melodica version to Bunny's 'Amagideon' ('Armageddon'), the first track on 'Rise & Shine', is followed by 'Love Fire', an update of another Wail N Soul M track, 'Fire Fire'/'Babylon Burning', through to one of the deepest roots records ever created, 'Rise & Shine', on to 'Riding' from the 'Bunny Wailer Sings The Wailers' sessions (but not featured on the album) and a huge hit in the UK in 1981, and closing with 'Rule Dance Hall' from 1985. No idle boast..., The liner notes feature the story of The Wailers, as told to Dub Store by Bunny himself in Kingston in an enlightening 2012 interview, and rarely seen contemporary photographs complete these essential releases. The music of Bunny Wailer was not only a medium for change and protest but also to elucidate and educate and 'Tread Along' and 'Rise & Shine' finally complete the canon of un-compiled Wailers music. "I'm quite satisfied, you know, reggae music is the kind of music that although sometimes you would look at it and say..., boy, it's hard..., then again you look at what it has done for the people of the world you know that that couldn't be locked up in a little place like Jamaica!" Afrodyssey Orchestra - In The Land Of Aou Tila

From Athens, Greece, Afrodyssey Orchestra take you on a musical journey that flows unconstrained between genres. The ensemble's influences span Jazz, Funk, traditional West African dance music and percussion, Psychedelia, and the Greek musical culture.

Afrodyssey Orchestra are an instrumental ensemble from Athens, Greece, comprising seven established musicians of diverse musical backgrounds. They came together through a series of musical journeys over the years — and officially as Afrodyssey Orchestra from 2013. Afrodyssey is unique in Europe for their use of Greek and West African musical forms together and their sound — an expression of contemporary Athens. In devising and performing compositions Afrodyssey seek to evoke communion between audience and music, transmitting the impulse to move - an intention that reconnects to the origins of Greek music as a process that gave a village social cohesion. In addition to their original compositions, the band performs innovative versions of well-known African and Greek traditional music. Most band members are multi-instrumentalists — lesser-known instruments played include the Kamelen Ngoni, a type of African harp, and the Balafon, an ancestor of the Marimba and Vibraphone.

Bitori - Legend Of Funana LP

In 1997, a quiet, unassuming man of 59 years old named Victor Tavares - better know as Bitori - walks into a studio for the very first time to record a masterpiece which many Cabo Verdean consider to be the best Funaná album ever made. Bitori´s musical adventure had begun long before this point. It was 1954 when he embarked on a journey across the seas to the island of Sao Tomé & Principe. The young man´s hope was to return to Cabo Verde with an accordion.

Following two years of hard labour Bitori had succeeded in saving enough money to acquire what was to become his most valued possession, his cherished instrument. The two month journey back to Santiago, his island of birth, proved time enough to master it. Self taught, Bitori developed his own style, an infectious blaze, that quickly caught the attention of the older generation. Before long Bitori was being asked to share his musical talents, igniting the local festivities around Praia with his music.

But not everybody welcomed the rural accordion-based sound. Perceived as a symbol of the struggle for Cape Verdean independence and frowned upon as music of uneducated peasants, Funaná was prohibited by the Portuguese colonial rulers. Performing it in public or in urban centres had serious consequences - often jail time and torture awaited musicians that were caught in the act'. In light of such persecution the genre of Funaná began to slowly disappear.

In 1975 Cabo Verde achieved independence from Portuguese colonial rule. Along with Cabo Verde's independence came a lifting of the ban placed on Funaná. The musical repercussions in Cabo Verde were plenty - many upcoming artists embraced Funaná, translating and adapting its musical form in new ways. It was not to be until the mid-1990's, however, that Funaná in its traditional form was actually recorded. It was a young singer from Tarafal, Chando Graciosa, who was to play a key role in this event. Upon hearing Bitori, Graciosa immediately felt drawn to Bitori's unique playing style - a raw and passionate sound accompanied by honest lyrics that reflected the harsh reality of the Cabo Verdean working class. He eagerly approached Bitori suggesting they join forces and travel overseas with the objective of taking Funaná beyond its rural roots. The two of them, with others in tow, achieved their goal and travelled to Europe, introducing a receptive European audience to the vibrant energy of Funaná.

Eventually Bitori returned to his beloved Cabo Verde. Graciosa opted to settle in Rotterdam in order to pursue his career - he vowed, however, to bring Bitori across to Holland at a later date to record an album.

In 1997 the time was ripe to immortalise the sound Bitori had shaped over a time span of four decades. Built around a formidable rhythm section, formed of drummer Grace Evora and bass player Danilo Tavares, "Bitori Nha Bibinha" was recorded. The recording catapulted Chando Graciosa to stardom, making him Cabo Verde´s No.1 interpreter of Funaná.

The success in Cabo Verde was phenomenal and Funaná rapidly gained the recognition it deserved, especially in urban dance clubs. Bitori´s songs quickly became standards - classics known and loved throughout the country. The musical success, however, was solely limited to the Cabo Verdean islands - until now!
Analog Africa is proud to contribute to the worldwide promotion of Funaná - the once forbidden sound of the Cabo Verde archipelago - by releasing a worldwide re-issue of Bitori and Chando Graciosa´s legendary recording.

The release will herald Bitori´s first European tour taking place during the summer of 2016. Watch this space! And listen!
