Bitori - Legend Of Funana LP

In 1997, a quiet, unassuming man of 59 years old named Victor Tavares - better know as Bitori - walks into a studio for the very first time to record a masterpiece which many Cabo Verdean consider to be the best Funaná album ever made. Bitori´s musical adventure had begun long before this point. It was 1954 when he embarked on a journey across the seas to the island of Sao Tomé & Principe. The young man´s hope was to return to Cabo Verde with an accordion.

Following two years of hard labour Bitori had succeeded in saving enough money to acquire what was to become his most valued possession, his cherished instrument. The two month journey back to Santiago, his island of birth, proved time enough to master it. Self taught, Bitori developed his own style, an infectious blaze, that quickly caught the attention of the older generation. Before long Bitori was being asked to share his musical talents, igniting the local festivities around Praia with his music.

But not everybody welcomed the rural accordion-based sound. Perceived as a symbol of the struggle for Cape Verdean independence and frowned upon as music of uneducated peasants, Funaná was prohibited by the Portuguese colonial rulers. Performing it in public or in urban centres had serious consequences - often jail time and torture awaited musicians that were caught in the act'. In light of such persecution the genre of Funaná began to slowly disappear.

In 1975 Cabo Verde achieved independence from Portuguese colonial rule. Along with Cabo Verde's independence came a lifting of the ban placed on Funaná. The musical repercussions in Cabo Verde were plenty - many upcoming artists embraced Funaná, translating and adapting its musical form in new ways. It was not to be until the mid-1990's, however, that Funaná in its traditional form was actually recorded. It was a young singer from Tarafal, Chando Graciosa, who was to play a key role in this event. Upon hearing Bitori, Graciosa immediately felt drawn to Bitori's unique playing style - a raw and passionate sound accompanied by honest lyrics that reflected the harsh reality of the Cabo Verdean working class. He eagerly approached Bitori suggesting they join forces and travel overseas with the objective of taking Funaná beyond its rural roots. The two of them, with others in tow, achieved their goal and travelled to Europe, introducing a receptive European audience to the vibrant energy of Funaná.

Eventually Bitori returned to his beloved Cabo Verde. Graciosa opted to settle in Rotterdam in order to pursue his career - he vowed, however, to bring Bitori across to Holland at a later date to record an album.

In 1997 the time was ripe to immortalise the sound Bitori had shaped over a time span of four decades. Built around a formidable rhythm section, formed of drummer Grace Evora and bass player Danilo Tavares, "Bitori Nha Bibinha" was recorded. The recording catapulted Chando Graciosa to stardom, making him Cabo Verde´s No.1 interpreter of Funaná.

The success in Cabo Verde was phenomenal and Funaná rapidly gained the recognition it deserved, especially in urban dance clubs. Bitori´s songs quickly became standards - classics known and loved throughout the country. The musical success, however, was solely limited to the Cabo Verdean islands - until now!
Analog Africa is proud to contribute to the worldwide promotion of Funaná - the once forbidden sound of the Cabo Verde archipelago - by releasing a worldwide re-issue of Bitori and Chando Graciosa´s legendary recording.

The release will herald Bitori´s first European tour taking place during the summer of 2016. Watch this space! And listen!

Luiz Carlos Vinhas / O Som De L.c.v. - Tanganica

Luiz Carlos Vinhas or L.C.V is one of our favourite artists here at Bongo HQ. His 'O Som Psicodelico' LP is an all-time classic.

Side A here features a killer latin-Brazilian dance floor fusion, heavy on the horns and piano. Sounds like a Tito Puente workout, with Brazilian backing vocals floated over the top.

The AA side features the album version, a much deeper cut with lush textures, breaks, horns and animal noises! Taken from the 'O Som Psicodelico' LP, which we highly recommend you track down.

A. Mahmoud Ahmed - Aynotché Tèrabu / AA. Seyoum Gèbrèyès & Wallias Band - Mètch Ené Terf Fèlèghu

'Aynotché Tèrabu', featuring Equators Band, was original released on Amha Records, Amha AE 920 A in 1975. This one has been a firm favourite in our DJ sets since we have had it cut; driving Ethio-funk with big vocals and drums.

Mahmoud Ahmed also appeared on Africa 45, number 4 with 'Bemen Sebeb Letlash'.

'Mètch Ené Terf Fèlèghu' was originally released on Kaifa KF 002 A (7703) in 1973. Mid tempo, Ethio funk led by a low slung bass line and horns.

Both Seyoum Gèbrèyès and Wallias Band appeared previously on AFR45.014.

Soul Jazz Records' new Nigeria Freedom Sounds! features a stunning selection of material spotlighting the vibrant musical scene in Nigeria at the start of the 1960s. With a wealth of musical and cultural history and newly independent from Britain, Nigerian music during this era was complex, diverse and forward-thinking, with musicians as excited in exploring their country's own musical lineage with styles such as Juju and Apala as they were in adapting and absorbing outside influences such as Ghanaian Highlife, Caribbean Calypsos and Mambo and more.
This album features many of the defining artists of this time who helped shape the Nigerian musical scene. Artists include I.K. Dairo and his Blue Spots, Haruna Ishola and his Group, E.C. Arinze, Sammy Akpabot and His All Stars, Godwin Omobuwa and his Soundmakers, Ganiyu Kale and His Guinea Mambo Orchestra and many more.
Few nations on earth are as diverse as Nigeria, and the wide assortment of Nigerian music styles collected on this album reflect the country's rich variety of cultures. Western-influenced dance music, played on European instruments such as guitar, brass, and woodwind sits alongside traditional musical styles, made with indigenous instruments such as the talking drum, marimba, or obo. And there is also religious musical styles first brought to Nigeria by European Christians and Islamic traders from North Africa. And of course, there are points where these musical styles overlap, merging into one another to create unique new sounds.
This album is released in two formats, as CD and as heavyweight gatefold double vinyl edition. The CD includes a large outsize 48-page book containing extensive sleevenotes, original photography, artist biographies, as well as selection of Nigerian adverts celebrating its independence and original artwork from some of the rare original Nigerian 45s on which this music was first (and only ever) released. The heavyweight gatefold 2xLP comes with full sleevenotes and download code.

No Zu - Afterlife

Afterlife

12inchCH130LP
CHAPTER MUSIC
15.03.2016

Afterlife is the fittingly-named sequel to 2012's Life, and sees the eight piece group venture into deeper, darker, more urgent territory. Chanted female vocals, pitched down male vocals, wild sax and horns coalesce into something uniquely antipodean, a bluestone back-alley hallucination that NO ZU call Heat Beat - a nocturnal sex dream bringing together no wave, funk, house, techno, and global percussion.

According to band leader Nicolaas Oogjes, Afterlife explores themes of human beauty, body movement, BDSM, belief systems, mortality, immortality, the fetishisation of Australian colonial invasion and destruction of land/cultures, all sung in dynamic dancefloor metaphors.

NO ZU have existed in various forms since 2007, but have really shifted into high gear of late. They contributed the standout track Raw Vis Vision to Cut Copy's definitive 2014 Melbourne dance compilation Oceans Apart, and instigated an ongoing collaboration with NYC punk-funk icon Sal P (Liquid Liquid).

Coming up over Australia's extended summer, they support No Wave icon James Chance (of the Contortions), then play Golden Plains and WOMAD.

Calypso Rose - Far From Home

Calypso Rose

Far From Home

2x10inchBEC5156520
Because Music
06.06.2016

The Calypso is a musical genre that was popularised in the 50's and exclusively made by men for a long time. But if there is one queen of this movement, it is Calypso Rose. Life hasn't always been easy for the Caribbean Diva and she willingly praises a discourse of peace, but engaged, condemning social unfairness and the actual status of women. This all is joyfully sung against a musical background of pure Calypso, Ska, soca or aga. After a long career of more than 800 songs composed, the dynamic 75 years-old woman is coming back with a new album Far From Home", determined to conquer the hearts of people she hasn't yet. Manu Chao, who discovered this living legend of Calypso", has provided his guitar and voice on 3 of this LP's tracks, produced by Ivan Duran. Many festivals are scheduled for this summer and the media have already given Calypso Rose a warm welcome, on a par with the generous performances she delivers on stage. The album will be available on June 3rd, right on time for the summer. Make sure the Diva accompanies you throughout the holidays !

Idris Ackamoor & The Pyramids - We Be All Africans - Lp + Cd

Strut are proud to present the brand new studio album from West coast intergalactic jazz mavericks, The Pyramids, led by their inspirational bandleader, Idris Ackamoor.Alto saxophonist Ackamoor first founded The Pyramids alongside fellow students Margo Simmons (flute) and Kimathi Asante (electric bass) in the summer of 1972. The three were students together at Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio where one of their teachers was renowned pianist, Cecil Taylor. After founding the band in Paris, performing in Holland and embarking on a cultural odyssey' across Africa, the group recorded three independent albums ('Lalibela' in 1973, 'King Of Kings' in 1974 and 'Birth / Speed / Merging' in 1976) and became renowned for their striking live shows, mixing percussive, spiritual and space-age jazz with performance, theatre, and dance. After migrating to San Francisco to perform on the Bay Area arts scene, they disbanded in 1977 after a final show at the UC Berkeley Jazz Festival.30 years later The Pyramids reunited unexpectedly in 2007 following growing demand for their music from vinyl collectors and jazz fans and embarked on the first of many European tours beginning in 2010 featuring original members, as well as a fresh line-up including renowned percussionist Kenneth Nash. In 2012 the group signed to German label Disko B who released a new album, the freeform 'Otherworldly' and all three albums from their rare back catalogue. Idris was promptly presented with a Lifetime Achievement Award by DJ Gilles Peterson at his Worldwide Awards and The Pyramids were back, gaining a whole new legion of fans. For their new album, 'We Be All Africans', the group traveled to Berlin to hunker down in Max Weissenfeldt's analogue Philophon studio. The result is a sparkling set of Afro- jazz-funk fusions, from the infectious chants of the title track to the reflective 'Epiphany' and the yearning, mournful future single, 'Silent Days' featuring the brilliant vocals of Bajka. Weissenfeldt released the first fruits from the sessions, 'Rhapsody In Berlin' as a limited 45 during 2015. The album features the full unedited version.

Les Pythons De La Fournaise - Slp!

Exquisit Franco-Creole supergroup Les Pythons de la Fournaise (named after the great volcano on the Reunion island) are rewarding us with their 2nd effort, "Salut Les Pythons !".

More songs, more groove, more emotion in this exciting long-player where the band show they not only can compose amazing tracks and develop their interpretation of classic Sega-Lontan (typical music genre from Reunion, Mauritius and surrounding islands), but also open their sound to broader, yet specific influences, ranging from 60's/70's psychedelia to Eastern harmonies or African rhythms. In this LP the work on vocals is stunning, the 2-female duet in "Maloya Ton Tisane" is a delight, as well as Reunion-native Rene Cadet's emotion in songs like "Pardon" .

The combination between percussion and drums is extremely tight, yet supple and true to the unique groove of Sega music. Tracks like "Ton Ti Gueul Rose" are a pure expression of the band's inventivity - merciless Arp synthesizer and electric guitar galopping through a frenetic rhythm.

Produced by the Catapulte team, this LP also benefits from a beautiful screen-printed artwork with a hand- glued photograph, different for each Vinyl copy - a unique object!

Tala A.m. - African Funk Experimentals 1975 To 1978 Cd

Tala AM (or Tala Andre Marie to give him his full and proper name) was born in Bandjoun in Cameroun in 1950. Talas life initially wasn't easy, he becomes blind at an early age and has lost both his mother and father by the age of 12. He then went on to make his first guitar by hand and form his first band "The Rock Boys" by the age of 17. Shortly after he meets the powerhouse of Camerounian music at the time Manu Dibango, a pivotal moment. With help, he re-locates to Paris and signs a contract with Fiesta Records. The first fruit of those labours is his debut album "Hot Koki".

The lead track (and highlight of this compilation) is "Hot Koki" it is a powerhouse of funk guitar, soul and infectious afro rhythms. Fast forward to 1974 and the famous "Rumble In The Jungle" fight between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman. The story goes a little something like this... At an accompanying musical event we find James Brown and Tala AM. JB Hears Hot Koki and creates a remarkably similar sounding track "The Hustle" (check it out side by side if you have the time).

Fast forward another 40 years. Time to take a look back on the funkier moments of Tala. This is not a "best of" Tala, that has already been done. Want to get into Tala's famous Tchamassi sound or do some "bend skin" beats... well check out the other compilations. Here at Africa Seven (and in this case) we are headed for destination funk. The musical topic inevitably leads us to the 70's and we borrow our super slick source material mainly from the albums Tala made for Fiesta Records from 1973 to 1978.

We open up the bombastic brass, swinging basslines and all out groove of Hot Koki (well after a little intro ditty gem). Then its on to the one of the highlights of "Arabia" album "Black Gold". This track swoons groove. Layers of picked and choppy guitar and on point drumming. "Sugar Lump" is next which sticks to the formula of the previous track but adds in catchy vocals.

Mining into the cave of delights that is the 1978 "Black Woman" album we then follow up with the driving afro beat grooves and stabby brass of "Gotam" and the boogie flowing grooves of "Black Woman" and the frenetic and driving grooves of "Ma Ka La". We round things off with the stabby clavi-funk of "Nom Te Ma" and the ultimate groovy funk-riff closer (and ear worm) Tcham Tcham.

So there you some slices of pure funk from a master. Tala's role of awards and achievements is long and impressive (check his Wikipedia), Knight of Valour of Cameroun, SACEM awards and his opening of a music school in Douala... However.. we feel these musical masterpieces are right up there with his finest achievements.. A true man of music.

Seun Kuti - A Long Way To The Beginning

'Many Things", released in 2008, and 'From Africa With Fury: Rise' in 2011, 'A Long Way To The Beginning' is the third album by Seun Anikulapo Kuti with Egypt 80, the 14 musicians big band he's been leading since the death of his father Fela Kuti in 1997. It's actually the third part of a triptych in which Fela's youngest son, direct descendant of the afrobeat music style created by his father at the end of the 60's, is back on the offensive regarding injustice in his country, Nigeria, where it still grows, with an intact anger and a music more powerful than ever. The ingredients that have contributed to the success of the first two albums are warring beats, triumphant brass sections and burning lyrics but 'A Long Way to The Beginning' is also distinguished by jazz pianist Robert Glasper's contribution as a producer. While opening the spectrum of the sound, Glasper has made the participation of guests from the conscious American rap scene such as M1 (Dead Prez) or Blitz The Ambassador, a Ghanaian in New York, possible. The voice of German-Nigerian singer Nneka can also be heard on the track 'Black Woman". Finally, the French vibraphonist David Neerman adds his personal touch on two tracks ("I.M.F.' and 'Black Woman"), enhancing his attention to details that, allied to its firepower, allows 'A Long Way To The Beginning' to be a sophisticated and strong album. The message of this record is political. Its mood is offensive. When asked about his commitment, Seun answers: 'Being African means being politically involved. From the moment he wakes up in the morning, an African has a political attitude as everything he'll be doing during the day will have something to do with survival.'

  • 11: Samba de Retorno

Tam TamTam Reimagined is the second album to come from Gilles Peterson's Sonzeira project. Overseen by the legendary DJ and record collector, this second album picks up where the first one left off. Where Brasil Bam BamBam brought together the allstars of Brazilian music, this album focuses on a key moment in the country's history, a record made at a crucial moment serves as the jumping off point for an openended project of musical reimagining.

Peterson's fascination with Brazilian music goes way back. Since his early days as a club DJ and pirate radio host, records from Brazil have taken prime position in his record bag. Be it the endless rhythmic possibilities - from batacuda to samba and bossa nova - or simply the sheer excitement channelled through much of it, the music has always spoken to him. Of all those records released in Brazil, however, the search for one in particular has taken on a real significance over the past couple of years: José Prates' Tam TamTam . An accompaniment to a stage production financed by the Brazil Culture Ministry, it was created to promote the country's culture to the world. Hearing the album - including its prototype of 'Mas Que Nada' that became a Sergio Mendes mega anthem - through Ed Motta during the making of the last Sonzeira album, it sparked a long hunt to get his hands on a copy (including a plea live on Channel 4 news).

With a mint copy successfully procured - not long after Jonny Trunk's reissue championed by Record Collector mag - it was taken as a starting point for creating something new. Working with production associates Will Horrocks from UK bassmeddling duo LV and Rob Gallagher from 2 Banks of 4 - along with appearances from drumming prodigy Moses Boyd and Kassin from Rio's Orquestra Imperial - they picked out phrases and snippets to build songs and tracks around.

Released in 1957, Tam TamTam celebrates a distinctly AfroBrazilian culture that was later suppressed following a coup in the early 1960s that led to a military dictatorship. From sparkling recreations of the atmospheric original to reverbladen dub, the album takes a magpielike approach to reinterpreting the most exciting aspects of Prates' postcard of Brazil to the world. Tam TamTam Reimagined forms another part of the Sonzeira project's aim to take apart and reassemble the pieces of what makes Brazil's music so unique.

Thornato - Things Will Change Ep

At this moment, Global Bass music is an intimate circuit in the electronic music landscape. Airplane tickets and the internet serve to connect producers and artists in every imaginable combination. Spanning across Africa, Europe, India, the Caribbean, and the Americas, allowing for the birth of new forms of collaboration. At the nexus of the Tropical music monsoon is producer Thor Partridge, aka Thornato. Born in Sweden, Thor grew up in a household filled with traditional Greek, African, and Carribbean music. Moving in early childhood to Queens, New York, the borough's diversity further influenced his style and taste. Thor added to his rich musical palette by studying classical piano, jazz guitar, and bluegrass banjo. A passion for electronic music production, remixing, and music of the entire globe soon developed. Thor's debut EP "Things Will Change" is an amalgamation of his global influence, coupled with strong roots in dance music culture. His music is not a product of samples downloaded from the internet, but from his driving wanderlust and ability to hand select musicians to work with on location in the countries where they are from. By recording in the field with a mobile studio, Thor captures the real essence and soul of the music and where it's coming from. The EP kicks off with "Chapinero", a bass heavy joint with an infectious Colombian Gaita melody. Handclaps and chopped vocal samples make for a booming floor rocker. "Deux a Duex" turns towards the African dancefloor incorporating infectious guitars and beautiful vocal harmonies courtesy of Kongo Electro from Cape Town. "Koz Kazah" heads to the Middle East with it's violin melodies, thick sub-bass, and Arabic vocals courtesy of Karen Be. Finally, "Tera Dewana" lands us in the Indian subcontinent with it's driving beat, tablas, and Hindi vocals from Vasanth S & AKS. Thornato's "Things Will Change" EP shows that while indeed the music does change, the soul and the heart of sounds from all over the world remain consistent, and that dancefloor music is universal - no matter where in the world you are!

Lovely record. An intimate, unshowy, reaching blend of British folk and minimalism in the tradition of Robert Wyatt solo, quietly co-mingling Henry Flynt and Ivor Cutler, Eastern outernationalism and Radio art. Beautifully presented, too, in a die-cut, inside-out sleeve, with a poster. Check it out!

San Lazaro - La Despedida

La Despedida - Spanish for "The Farewell" - is a breakup album. A psychedelic, post-apocalyptic meta-breakup album by a band that has broken up more than once. For over a decade, San Lazaro have been playing and writing original Latin music in Melbourne. A tribe of lost Latinos, cobbled together from all over the Spanish speaking world. From Chile to Cuba to Catalonia, they've come together at the Southern end of Australia to sing the songs they needed to sing and tell the stories they needed to tell.

Various - Tanbou Toujou Lou: Meringue, Kompa Kreyol, Vodou Jazz, And Electric Folklore From Haiti 1960-1981 Cd

Selected from an array of private collections and radio archives in Brooklyn, New York, and multiple digging trips in Port-au-Prince, Jacmel, Gonaives, and St. Marc, are twenty tracks that encompass the vast diversity of styles during the seminal years of musical innovation and percussive potency in Haiti. From the legendary, elegant big band dance parties in iconic nightclubs of Port-au-Prince to the rhythms of the countryside, from accordion-driven meringue and Vodou-derived drum patterns, to hypnotic tenor sax arrangements and psychedelic interpretations of folklore, the music of 1960's, '70's, & '80's Haiti enjoys a royal repute across the Caribbean, West Africa, and the Colombian coast.

Between the 1960s and 1980s, experimentation and electric reinterpretation of traditional rhythms was rife, along with the sophisticated balancing of a host of influences. There's the jazz-era instrumentation, brought during the early 20th century American occupation, which introduced horn sections to Haitian ensembles. Cuba, cultural imperator of the Afro-Atlantic and perennial ally of Haiti, imbued Meringue, Mambo, Son, Guajira, Charanga, and a slew of Afro-Cuban styles into the Haitian repertoire. Accordion-driven Colombian Cumbia and Dominican Merengue left their mark. A melting pot of sound was all held together by the countless rhythms, drum patterns, and percussion brought across the Atlantic from Africa, surviving slavery's violent cultural repression.

Nago rhythms from what is today Nigeria and Benin, Kongo rhythms from Central Africa, and Petwo rhythms from the Vodou traditions of Guinea, among many others, were revived and given special importance in an age of black consciousness, driven by the Negritude and Noiriste philosophies of Afro-Caribbean intellectuals like Jamaica's Marcus Garvey and Martinique's Frantz Fanon.

The lasting result is a rich, layered terrine that spawned Haiti's Cuban-inspired Meringue, the dominant Kompa Direct of Nemours Jean Baptiste, the silky tenor sax-led Cadence Rampa pioneered by Webert Sicot, psychedelic Mini Jazz, and the dancefloor-filling Vodou Jazz compositions of de-facto national orchestra, Super Jazz de Jeunes. At its peak, Haitian music was widely distributed, proliferating its unique blend of sound across the Francophone Caribbean and West Africa.

Recordings capturing this vibrant laboratory of colliding influences were produced and pressed in Haiti, the United States, France, and elsewhere in the Caribbean. Huge catalogs from the heavyweight record labels of the time-IBO Records, Marc Records, and Mini Records-and the smaller, private presses have largely been gathering dust and bugs, left to warp in the damp humidity..., until now.

Accompanied by a 20 page liner note booklet with vintage photographs mined across Haiti and its vast diaspora, an essay by a scholar of traditional Haitian Vodou rhythms at the School of Arts in Port au Prince, a history of the Haitian sound, and interviews with key figures of the forgotten scene, the compilation will be available on a gatefold LP, CD, and digital formats.

Sunlightsquare - Flies To Rio (feat. Josué Ferreira)

Sunlight Square has long been the home to tropical, exotic. funky and soulful sounds - and this brand new release is the showcase for an amazing, newly signed talent, the brilliant Brazilian vocalist and guitarist Josue Ferreira.

Josue, having been performing solidly for some years across the world, and most recently in London- is an assured and confident artist -and whilst steeped in the classic tradition of Brazilian singer/songwriters such as Marcos Valle, Jorge Ben and Seu Jorge, he has a fresh approach full of vitality - and once teamed up in the studio with Sunlightsquare's multi-talented Claudio Passavanti the results are breathtaking.

These brand new reinterpretations of the evergreen tracks, João Bosco's Nação and Jorge Bens' Taj Mahal are both a tribute to, and an extension of the rich seam of bossa nova, samba and Afro-Cuban rhythms that has made this music the timeless and deeply influential sound that has had the world dancing for over 50 years.

Voodoocuts & Soulbrigada - Matasuna Records Pres. Afreaka!

Voodoocuts kicks off the A-Side with 'Kelja', a raw 70s afro-funk bomb from the Ivory Coast. The American-funk inspired tune features a funky bassline & killer organ vibe, mingled with a dirty, raw saxophone line and James Brown influenced vocals. Voodoocuts' rework turns the track into a serious dancefloor banger! In 'The Tortoise Loop' Voodoocuts blends an infectious groove with pounding drum breaks and hypnotic vocals. A hot afro-latin joint not to be missed!

On the flip SoulBrigada takes things to a disco tip. 'Hustleman' is a stunning afrofunk & disco gem from West Africa. The second track 'Madera' is an afro-disco gem with a compelling Cape Verdean groove. SoulBrigada rearranged the tracks, added drums, samples and effects building a brigde between past and present - without ever losing its original organic vibe. Two essential tunes for your record bag!

Mungolian Jetset - A City So Convenient Ep

MungolianJetset have been keeping a low profile since their last album Mungodelics (apart from their collaboration with Todd Terje on his Alfonso Muskedunder track). But now they're back with a brand new EP, conveniently titled 'A City So Convenient' . It's an extended player in four acts featuring retro-futuristic space-age music, specially designed for disco indulgence a nearly 30 minute soundtrack, with the Mongolians working up a head of steam to power up a series of imaginary urban flyovers.

"Quintessential Trips To Bergen" is a tribute to their musician friends in that city in western Norway BjørnTorske, Erot and Røyksopp with its cartoon psychedelic textures over sizzling Caribbean percussion. The brother-sister numbers "San Fran Speedhall" and "San Disco Speedhall" are mesmerizing and shiny, like a Ferrari cruising through disco space, while the title track takes a deeper dive into mellower oceans. Or as they explain it themselves: We`ve tried to make a theme based EP, connecting some of our more contemporary influences with our own style, as well as trying to gain a kind of a classic electronic vibe to it, retro and futuristic, and hopefully with a bit of timelessness to it.

Keiji Haino / Jim Ozrourke / Oren Ambarchi - I Wonder If You Noticed Lizm Sorryl Is Such A Lovely Sound It Keeps Things From Getting Worse

The remarkable series of releases from the trio of Keiji Haino, Jim O'Rourke and Oren Ambarchi continues with "I wonder if you noticed "I'm sorry" Is such a lovely sound It keeps things from getting worse", which presents the entirety of an 80 minute set performed at Tokyo's SuperDeluxe in March 2014. Where their 2012 performance (BT011 and BT012) was divided into two releases, one continuing their exploration of the guitar/bass/drums power trio format and the other emphasizing new instrumental configurations, the single extended performance presented here ranges widely over terrain both new and familiar, from acoustic strings and collective chants to thunderous power trio moves.
Throughout all of its transformations, the music here is some of the riskiest and most abstract the trio have yet committed to record. Beginning with chiming percussion reminiscent of Haino's classic Tenshi No Gijinka, the first side is dominated by Haino's impassioned vocals and performance on the bulgari, a traditional Turkish string instrument. Together with the woozy, sliding foundation of O'Rourke FX-laden bass and Ambarchi's ritualistic percussion, the trio craft a sort of epic, abstracted song that moves through its spontaneous episodes with all of the fluidity of the best free improvisation.
After a haunting passage in which Haino's voice, descending from angelic high notes to guttural growls, is accompanied only by O'Rourke's roaming bass, Haino turns to electronics, gradually building a thick cloud of cosmic sludge as Ambarchi's drumming goes into free fall. The end of the second side presents a special treat: Haino's first recorded outing on the contrabass harmonica, from which he coaxes bizarre, wheezing textures against a backdrop of spacious bass and percussion. When Haino eventually picks up the guitar midway through the epic performance, the spaciousness and sense of volatility remain, with the trio often moving in an instant from crescendos of ecstatic noise to near-silence.
O'Rourke and Ambarchi rarely adopt here the classic rock roles essayed on earlier releases. O'Rourke's bass, which takes centre stage surprisingly often, is sometimes so heavily processed by his array of pedals that it becomes a shifting electronic mass, at other times his roving chromaticism suggests a sort of fuzzed-out free jazz. Ambarchi spends much of the set exploring areas of tumbling free pulse, and even when he locks into a constantly repeated figure on the set's third side, he gestures as much toward Ronald Shannon Jackson's stuttering marching band funk as toward any classic rock moves.
When the trio finally move in the final quarter of the performance into an extended passage of rock riffing, the payoff is immense, as they craft a thudding one-chord epic reminiscent of some of the early Fushitsusha classics, before Haino returns to the bulgari, bringing the set back to where it began. Continuing to explore new instrumental and dynamic possibilities while remaining grounded in the trio's previous work, this set also brings with it a unique pleasure for the non-Japonophone listener: for the first time Haino sings many of his metaphysically brooding lyrics in English.
(Francis Plagne)
