Calhau! - Ü

Calhau!

Ü

12inchK087
KRAAK
31.03.2016

A true gem from the Portugese underground. Sparse electronics blended with mystic vocalism — think Ghédalia Tazartes on the coffee by Diamanda Galás.

Deep in the Portugese underground Calhau! is constructing an absurd universe in which nightmares, rural Catholic mysticism and surrealist spirituality play the lead role. Performance, movie and music are contributing to one melancholic and cruel whole. The music is deeply rooted in Roman mysticism, using the dark hand of alchemy to beseech the insane 21st century.

The duo sounds like an updated verion of Ghédalia Tazartes and Throbbing Gristle, blending tape collages and sparse electronics, not unlike the PAN back catalogue.

Foremost, Calhau! are their own isle, at the point where the Old Europe disappears in the sea.

Ú is their third album up to date, and the first release by KRAAK. The A-side builds upon 5 song particles, in which a grotesque voice float over hard samples and rough electronics. The voice sings Portuguese, or Latin, maybe French or Mongolian throat singing. Vom Grill's gurgles could be a reference.
Side B is a re-release of the limited mini-cd A Corte D'Urubu. It's one long droney piece, a result of a collaboration with a choir, recorded at the Portuguese coast. The composition is a loose interpretation of Gregorian pieces, like Stabat Mater and Veni Creator Spiritus, mixing choral works with gritty synths and sinistre opera.

Calhau! is not unlike the Portugese language: familiar and far out exotic, hermetic and poetic. The duo establish with Ú their status as the most talented duo of the Portugese Avant- Garde.

Lagos All Routes - Juju And Highlife, Apala And Fuji

The period stretching from the mid-1960s through the early 1980s is often considered the 'golden age' of African popular music. Concurrently with the rise of popular music as a worldwide phenomenon, African popular music had its beginnings in the early decades of the 20th century, as radio broadcasting and sound recording facilities were gradually established by the colonial powers. By the end of World War II, European companies such as EMI, Gallo and Decca were starting to establish large-scale operations in the colonial territories. But African popular music really began to flower in the years of nationalist struggle and independence. With the winds of political change blowing in the air, popular music became extremely important as a component of the cultural life of newly or soon-to-be independent nations. Produced and consumed largely independently of local ethnic musical traditions — however much it may have drawn on them — popular music was seen as a powerful expression of newly national identity. The enthusiasm, idealism, and optimism that can be felt in the music of this era reflect the optimism and idealism of independence.

Symbolically, the challenge was for musicians not only to entertain, but to provide a uniquely African inflection of concepts such as the nation state, modernity, the city, and technology. Stylistically, the challenge was twofold — to modernize folk, classical and traditional genres on one hand, and to Africanize foreign genres on the other. Out of these two intertwined projects emerged African popular music. The equation worked itself out in as many different ways as there were locations, but Nigeria was undeniably a particularly creative setting. With a large population, an extremely diverse (and often turbulent) cultural mix, and such strong cultural traditions, it is no surprise that Nigeria would emerge as a most dynamic source of popular music. The discovery of petroleum deposits in the Niger River Delta in the 1940s and the oil boom that eventually followed in the late 1960s was the final catalyst in the ascension of Nigeria's capital city of Lagos as the powerhouse of the Anglophone West African music industry.

In Nigerian pidgin English, 'chop-up' makes figurative reference to a bountiful feast. 'Lagos All Routes' refers to the fact that while the music on these collection originates from various parts of Nigeria, it is inevitably filtered through the urban prism of Lagos, which literally exploded with music during the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.

The bulk of the music here (on both Lagos Chop Up and Lagos All Routes) falls within the style known as highlife, a pan-ethnic style of dance music native to Anglophone West Africa. The roots of highlife are held to be in colonial-era Ghana, and its early development was marked by two streams — dance-band highlife (an African adaptation of European swing and ballroom music) and guitar-band highlife (based in the 'palmwine' style of folk and street guitar music). The two styles eventually fused in the 1940s, absorbing along the way local African folk tunes and the music of marching brass bands. The founder of modern highlife is considered to be the Ghanaian trumpeter/saxophonist/bandleader E.T. Mensah. Mensah was enormously popular throughout West Africa, and his Nigerian tours planted the seeds of Nigeria's own highlife scene, spearheaded by guitarist Bobby Benson. Out of Benson's band came a generation of Nigerian bandleaders including the Cool Cats, led by trumpeter/vocalist Victor Olaiya, the so-called 'Evil Genius' of highlife. Olaiya's bands in turn spawned many influential Nigerian musicians including Fela Kuti, Victor Uwaifo, Tony Allen, Peter King, Cardinal Rex Jim Lawson, Eddie Okonta, and others. Moonlight Highlife and Omelebele are two of Olaiya's most popular songs: the former — with its quaint trumpet solo (reminiscent of Louis Armstrong) and plaintive horn background — shows Olaiya's roots in the older, Ghanaian style of highlife, while Omelebele augurs the increasing influence of American soul and R and B. Similarly, the Harbours Band's Da Wa Lohun (God Answer Us) and the Traveller's Lodge Atomic Eight's track Ikut Asana Edem are fine examples of the trumpet-led style of highlife. The Atomic Eight band was based in the eastern town of Aba and featured a front line of talented horn players including the multi-instrumentalist wind player Raymond Barber and trumpeter Babatunde Williams, who would go on to play a central role in Fela Kuti's Afrika 70. Their passages of collective improvisation reflect roots in the coastal brass band traditions of Nigeria and Ghana, and the more distant influence of New Orleans.

A guitar-oriented variant of highlife developed in Nigeria's eastern region, which is strongly associated with the Igbo ethnic group. The most-beloved eastern bandleader was trumpeter/vocalist Cardinal Rex Jim Lawson, who was actually of mixed Igbo and Calabari background. Lawson apprenticed with bandleaders such as Benson, Olaiya, and Roy Chicago before striking out on his own with a unique blend of Igbo lyrics sung over Calabari rhythms. Lawson's four tracks are central to the development of eastern highlife, with its characteristic blend of horns and profuse guitar finger picking. A bit younger than Lawson was guitarist Sir Victor Uwaifo. A former wrestler, Uwaifo hails from Benin City (where Edo and Bini are the main languages) but his song lyrics are generally sung in Igbo or pidgin English. Uwaifo is famous for deriving the concept for his akwete rhythm from the woven cloth of the same name. His 1965 hit Joromi is his best-known song, sung in Igbo and graced with gently picked guitar. A similar fusion is achieved in Gentleman Mike Ejeagha's reflective Onye Ori Utaba (Tobacco Thief), which features Ejeagha's proverb-strewn vocals interspersed with his gorgeous picking, also in the Eastern Minstrels' Selense, and in Sir Patrick Idahosa's Eni.

The tremulous vocal delivery that marks much Igbo highlife singing is particularly apparent in Steven Amechi's Onye Na Eli Nkwu (A Drinker) and Oliver De Coque's Tragedy Story. Alongside Lawson, Amechi, Uwaifo and Ejeagha, De Coque was a native of eastern Nigeria, but his ogene style reflected the strong influence of Congolese music in its quick tempo and style of vocal delivery, as well as the complex guitar lines. The Congolese influence is also clear in the work of the Super Negro Bantous, another Igbo highlife band popular in the 1970s and 1980s.

Some musicians also sought to infuse highlife with traditional elements. Chief Umobuarie's Ebalume and Etubom Rex Williams' Uwa Idem Mi both replace the standard drum set with bells and other percussion, and the guitar with thumb piano and/or indigenous string instruments of some sort. Highlife aficionados might notice that the thumb piano pattern on Uwa Idem Mi was one frequently adapted to highlife guitar playing in both Nigeria and Ghana.

Quantic Presenta Flowering Inferno - A Life Worth Living Feat. U-roy & Alice Russell

With vocals from Jamaican reggae legend U-Roy and long-tme Quantc collaborator Alice Russell, this
12' vinyl single boasts the long version of the track with an exclusive Quantc Dub on the B-side, while
the download card and digital version of the single also highlight the album version of the song.

Laden with positve spirit and hazy tropical heat, the chorus of this single sees renowned soul singer
Alice Russell reprising the delicate, Minnie-Riperton-esque vocal style that captvated the world on the
Quantc & Alice Russell album 'Look Around The Corner'. Russell's ethereal harmonies play of the char-
ismatc stylings of toaster extraordinaire U-Roy - fondly known as the Originator, for his central role in
the evoluton of dub music - while Will 'Quantc' Holland wraps it all up in a hypnotcally catchy horn
rif and rootsy, dub-fuelled producton.
The third album from Quantc Presenta Flowering Inferno, (and Holland's 17th in total, across various
Quantc-related projects), '1000 Wats' sees this musical explorer making a more concerted foray into
reggae-roots territory. Recorded direct to tape, the album draws together a set of classic style rhythms
for the dancefoor, and for this outng, Holland enlisted the most prestgious roll-call of guest perform-

Razen - Endrhymes

Razen

Endrhymes

12inchK086
KRAAK
31.03.2016

A new album by Razen with four pieces of hardcore melodic minimalism and raw dystopian deep listening.

Exclusive artwork by Bryan Lewis Saunders. Endrhymes is a ne recorded 4 pieces in which they explore a new form of Minimalism. The pieces thrive on an almost compulsory focus and improvisation — carefully developed during many concerts. As a trio, Razen erased the acoustic deep listening from their last record to explore a new territory of raw melodic and psychedelic minimalism, which refers to the massive works of Louis Andriessen.

The first and last track are raw pulsating improvisations, build out of short melodic motives, creating a slow changing arch of musical tension. The center pieces Sorcerer / Reaper destroys the musical center and drops the listener into a cold, dystopian place, left alone, subject to powers beyond him.

Razen leaves with their new album the listener no choice: immerse.

Ashley Monroe - Live At Third Man Records

She's at her best when she not only has a guitar in her hands, but a pencil too. She's 1/3 of Pistol Annies, 1/2 of the Cherry Sisters, 2 parts sugar, and 1 part spice. She's a East Tennessee girl in a Tennessee town with a new record out and a Grammy nomination to show for it. She's a storyteller, a truth seller, and a good speller. Hers is a regular name to see on the liner notes of the records you love, and it wouldn't surprise us one bit if you love the records you love because her name is on the liner notes. The first time Ashley Monroe sang at Third Man Records, it was with Wanda Jackson for her 'Live at Third Man Records,' LP. The next time Ashley Monroe sang at Third Man Records, it was with Willie Nelson for his special 80th Birthday CMT Crossroads Live at Third Man Records performance, released as Vault Package #17. The last time Ashley Monroe sang at Third Man Records, it was May 2015 to record her very own Live at Third Man Records 12' LP, recorded direct-to-acetate in the Blue Room. So, without further ado, we are pleased to present this brand new live record.

CFM is Charles Francis Moothart. He has been making records for the past decade, playing various instruments in various bands—bass in The Epsilons, drums in The Moonhearts, and guitar in The Ty Segall Band and, most recently, Fuzz. Still Life of Citrus and Slime is Moothart's first solo effort and it's a great one.
Moothart says, 'Still Life of Citrus and Slime—the idea of creating something outside of the comfort zone. Blending basic elements of necessity, release and escape. An attempt to fuse reality with the elusions of the possible. The music represents an elevation beyond the barriers of linear motion and self-doubt. It is similar to looking in a mirror and realizing that time trails itself constantly by just a millisecond. You cannot kill time, and you cannot exist on both sides of the reflex. Yet, to bridge the gap is to eliminate
instinct and output in their purest forms.
'This record is a portrait of a person navigating the mechanics of two distinct machines. The first—the brain. The second—the Tascam 388. Eight tracks and a quarter-inch path to maneuver to the summation. The songs simmer from rare to well done. No matter the cut, the meat is fresh and still vibrating with life. 'Fast, slow, wonky and straight. There are moments of everything in these grooves. At times it feels like it could come apart at the seams, but it doesn't. It grabs the thread, bites the end, pulls it tight and continues the experiment. It's rock 'n' roll, and that's all. The greener grass is browning on the other side. The drought is here to stay. The only way out of this mess is to put your head down and do the right thing. Keep moving, keep trying, keep creating, and project any positivity possible. Of course it is much easier to succumb to the wolf. Just forget about it, and pretend it is out of your control. Thankfully the wolf let down his guard. Having found refuge in a blanket of heartache and a bottle of wine, he took a cat nap in a manger of confusion.'

'One of the purest, brightest, and most destructive sparks to light up Brisbane in the past twelve months has been Clever. Featuring members past and present of Per Purpose, The Wrong Man, Sewers, Psy Ants and more, this four-piece are taking the Venom P Stinger route into Brisbane sweatbox oblivion, a white-hot, multi-limbed, irascible demon intent on exploding and regenerating in two-minute spurts.'
- SONIC MASALA

'Brisbane noisy nihilists Clever burst out of the gutter a couple years ago, wiping the floor with blood-and-sweat-stained alacrity. They started littering stages in 2015, after I had left, and I quickly lined them up to last year's Sonic Masala Fest - an amazing set, one of my favourites across the two festivals thus far. Their visceral gurning and flailing felt brutal and new, at least in these parts - aside from the dour disintegration of Kitchen's Floor and gnashed madness of Sewers, this is the kind of sound more accustomed to the diseased denizens of Melbourne mainstays like Cuntz, Mutton and others that spill from the feedtime wellspring. But it shouldn't be a surprise that such arced anarchy was born out of the melding of dark-matter minds from members Per Purpose, Psy Ants and The Wrong Man. And now they have locked horns with Homeless Records (Cuntz, Spray Paint, Yes I'm Leaving) for their first LP Kewdi Udi. First cut 'Your Eyesore's Sweat' may not be the deepest, but it is infected with acrid angularity and fevered spit.'
- SONIC MASALA

A degenerate amalgam of mutated underground punk and venomous noise rock, Clever are one the most furious forces to hit the Brisbane underground music scene in 2016.
A shambolic collection of Brisbane locals drawn from Per Purpose, The Wrong Man, Sewers and Psy Ants, the four-piece comprises of drummer Callum Galletly, guitarist Fred Gooch, bassist Harry Bryne and front man Mitch Perkins. Formed in 2015 the group's incisive noise punk has become a regular feature within Brisbane's underground scene

Peter Broderick - Music For Confluence

April 1st will see Peter Broderick's classic score Music For
Confluence reissued on vinyl for the first time. Through relentless touring and multiple album recordings, Portlandbased Peter Broderick has established himself as a contemporary composer, known for his innate gift as a musical medium to picking up any instrument, turning his musings into poignant songs. The scope of Peter's work is vast - his recordings and original score work currently feature in dance arrangements, art installations, films and documentaries.

He collaborated with many like-minded contemporaries such as Nils Frahm and Greg Haines, and featured on Clint Mansell's Last Night soundtrack. Peter's signature emotional depth cuts through any instrument to create stirring, personal music that is full of artistic detail. Currently an artist in residence at Sirius Arts Centre in Cobh, Ireland, 2016 has much in store for Peter.

Created in 2011 for Jennifer Anderson and Vernon Lott's spell binding documentary film on five unsolved murders in Idaho, the soundtrack takes the listener through waves of stark emotions.

IN HIS OWN WORDS: 'It was November 2010 when I started to
seriously think about relocating to Berlin. I knew my Danish visa
would run out sometime in 2011 and if I wanted to stay in Europe I'd need to either renew it or get another visa elsewhere.

Berlin pulled me in like a magnet, with so many of my friends and
inspirations living and working there, and also being so central for
my frequent European travels. And just when I started to think about finding a place, I heard about a friend of a friend who was renting out a spacious two-floor apartment in the middle of town. I was told the building was owned by a man who only wanted musicians to live there, so I could make all the noise I wanted, and on top of that I was given a key to the piano store on the bottom floor so I could play anytime the store was closed ... the place was made for me!

All winter, when I wasn't traveling and playing concerts, I was locked away in this new space creating. I had been asked to make the score for a documentary film called Confluence. The film is based in the Lewiston, Idaho area, not too far from where I grew up in the USA, and it chronicles several mysterious cases of young girls found murdered or gone missing around 1980, all of which seem to lead back to one man who for a variety of reasons has not been able to be charged with these crimes.

So with my minimal equipment and a key to Die Klavier Etage (the
piano store), I set out to create some textural soundscapes which
could compliment the building tension of the story without being too intrusive or suggestive. Days and nights, snowed in and
experimenting with layers and layers of whichever instruments I had around, finding a murky atmosphere that fit with the uneasy feeling which the film gave to me. On New Year's Eve I was inside, recording the final notes for the score. I had finished everything except the piece for the credits. After speaking with one of the directors of the film, Vernon Lott, we decided the song for the credits should be different from the rest of the score. So while the fireworks were exploding outside my window, I was recording Old Time, a song which for me felt like a breath-of-fresh-air after story which can only
leave you wondering...' - Peter Broderick.

Peter Broderick - Music For Falling From Trees

April 1st will see Peter Broderick's classic Erased Tapes debut
Music For Falling From Trees reissued on vinyl and CD.

2009's Music for Falling From Trees, a 30-minute piece in seven
sections, was created for a contemporary dance by London-based choreographer Adrienne Hart at Neon Dance. Adrienne was looking for a score of piano and strings, so Peter left the guitar and his voice aside and focused entirely on those two timbres. The dance tells the story of a man in a psychiatric hospital, and his struggle to maintain his identity. The music is sometimes melancholic, sometimes playful, sometimes chaotic, but with the combination of piano and strings, full of beauty, reverence and awe.

IN HIS OWN WORDS: 'In late 2008, Adrienne Hart contacted me about scoring her new work, Falling From Trees. In Adrienne's words, 'the piece is set in a psychiatric hospital and centered around one man's struggle to retain his identity in the most extreme of circumstances.' There are four dancers in the piece.

One male playing the patient, and three female hospital workers. I had been making music for a variety of film projects, but the thought of scoring a dance was very exciting to me. I was on tour at the time, so I wasn't able to start writing the music until I had a break in early January. The dance premiered on January 21st, so I had about three weeks to create the score. I camped out up in the top of my father's barn with some minimal recording equipment, my violin and viola, and an old broken piano. Given the time constraints,

I approached the music in a very open way. Rather than sit down and try to compose something, I just set up a microphone and started playing. After coming up with a couple of themes on the piano, I started recording, using those small themes and improvising around them. Most of the sections have a small core that is composed, and then the rest is improvised. Luckily for me this method seemed to work. I would work all day and then send a sketch over to Adrienne, and every time her response was positive.

So in this way we worked very well together. I give my hugest thanks to Adrienne for trusting me to create the music for her
wonderful work. Adrienne told me from the beginning she was looking for a score of piano and strings. So I decided to take this literally and make a rule not to use any other instruments. In the script it called for the sound of a ticking clock. I made this sound by tapping on the body of the violin with my fingernails.

The sound of an electric shock given to the patient is depicted by a quick, distorted piano chord. And all other droning and bass tones were made by extending and processing violin and/or piano tones, etc. Thank you very much for listening.' - Peter Broderick, March 2009.

Sean Lennon's AVA'S POSSESSIONS film score is the musical backdrop for a quirky and eerie alternatereality that flips the possessions genre on its head, starring Louisa Krause, Carol Kane, Jemima Kirke and Dan Fogler.

A mysterious, dreamy wash of echoey drum machines and keyboards with dark and foreboding synth arrangements, twangy guitar riffs with a sci-fi western flair, 50s pop, 70s punk, creepy demonic themes interlaced with a touch raunchy, swaggering horns that recalls old school film noir — these diverse elements blend seamlessly to build a world of ominous moods and devilish confrontations, with a surprisingly fresh indie rock edge.

Lennon acts as both composer and performer on 10 of the songs, the remaining 2 being bonus tracks contributed by A.A. Khan (aka King Khan) and Mary Ochers. Vocalists Karla Moheno, Bishi and Foley Steward lend their voices to 'Different Drum,' 'Devil Daughter' and 'Blame Beelzabub' respectively.

Lennon has released two previous film scores, Rosencrantz And Guildenstern Are Undead and Alter Egos, to great critical acclaim. The diversity of these projects is a testament to his range as a musician, with nearly every review commenting on the film's music, calling it one of the single best things about the film.

Tacocat's third studio album, Lost Time (an X-Files reference, doy), is their first with producer Erik Blood. 'I would describe him generally as a beautiful wizard,' Nokes said, 'who, in our opinion, took the album to the next level. Wizard level.' Blood's sounds are wide and expansive, bringing a fullness to the band's familiar sparkling snarl. The Tacocat of Lost Time are triumphantly youthful but also plainspoken and wise, as catchy as they are substantive. 'Men Explain Things to Me' eviscerates male condescension with sarcastic surf guitar. On 'The Internet,' they swat away trolls with an imperiousness so satisfying you want to transmogrify it into a sheetcake and devour it: 'Your place is so low/Human mosquito.'
Recorded with known wizard Erik Blood at two separate Seattle locations.

Personnel notables: Emily Nokes (vocals, tambourine), Eric Randall (guitar), Lelah Maupin (drums), and Bree McKenna (bass, also of Childbirth). Tacocat have performed the theme song for the Cartoon Network's relaunch of the cartoon Powerpuff Girls, which premieres in April of 2016.

The Cosmic Dead return with their first full length album since 2014's Easterfaust. For the uninitiated The Cosmic Dead are a quartet from Glasgow, Scotland, making some of the best raging freak out psych right now. 'Rainbowhead' is a brand new LP, featuring four tracks of spaced out, heavy psych formed from insane chugging bass, trippy synth blasts, krautrock infused metallic guitar riffin' and furious cascading drum cycles. The band's constant positive vibes have led to them touring all over the UK and Europe, playing the prestigious Liverpool Psych Fest and the band are due to play Psycho Festival in Las Vegas in August alongside Sleep, Candlemass, Yob, Mudhoney, Death and more. 'Rainbowhead' follows records on Cardinal Fuzz, Evil Hoodoo, Who Do You Trust, Sound of Cobra and some of the best underground labels around.

The band said:
'A few days before appearing at Cry Parrot's 'Music Is The Music Language' Festival in Glasgow, The Cosmic Dead journeyed north to a remote cottage near Kyle of Lochalsh in the Highlands of Scotland. Isolated from technology and with the help of focaccia aficionado & sound engineer Luigi Pasquini, we recorded sounds wrought from the textures and folds of the surrounding landscape clasping its craggy links to the Inner Sea. A place we call Rainbowhead.'

act The Foetals, the new project from
Jolan Lewis (the frontman of The Pink
Teens, fka Temple Songs, who also
plays in Francis Lung's (ex WU LYF)
band as well as Aldous RH).
Meet The Foetals was recorded by Jolan
himself in two days at his own small
studio in the outskirts of Manchester,
trying to find a middle ground between
perfect 60's pop records and the inept
DIY sound of American private press LPs - think The Bachs and The
Patron Saints playing Paul McCartney covers. The Foetals have been
praised by the likes of Stereogum, Noisey, NME, DIY, BEAT, KEXP and
Apple's Beats 1.
Following Jolan's recent health issues, as a small sign of support,
PNKSLM Recordings will be donating the label's share of the profits
from the vinyl edition of Meet The Foetals to Cancer Research UK.

William Fowler Collins & James Jackson Toth - Under Stars And Smoke

Under Stars and Smoke is the soundtrack to an imaginary landscape wherein various 'actual' locales are thematically superimposed atop one another to suggest new, alien terrain. Both the New Mexico-based William Fowler Collins and the Kentucky-based James Jackson Toth find a great deal of inspiration in their adopted home regions: While Collins translates via mighty drones the vast, occasionally unforgiving mesas of the American southwest, Toth bends and blends the sounds and textures of traditional bluegrass and mountain music. Complete with frame-worthy 'pastoral psychedelia' cover art by visual artist Claudia X. Valdes, Under Stars & Smoke is an album as explicitly American and distinctly postmodern as the maverick artists who created it.

This is the debut collaborative release from the duo. James Jackson Toth appears under the moniker Wooden Wand, and in countless collaborations, on over a hundred records, and in 2015 founded, with his wife Leah, the experimental label Footfalls Records. William Fowler Collins is composer/musician and recording artist whose work explores and synthesizes both musical and extra-musical elements. Collins has released music on the SIGE, Type, Handmade Birds, Daymare, Digitalis and Root Strata labels. Current projects include collaborations with Aaron Bradford Turner and Raven Chacon (in Mesa Ritual).

Under Stars and Smoke was mastered by James Plotkin, and is packaged in a full colour sleeve designed by Claudia X. Valdes. Pressed in an edition of 200 copies for the world on 180 gram black vinyl.

Mavis Staples - Livin' On A High Note

Alben einzuspielen. Ganz im Gegenteil: "Livin' On A High Note" wirkt ungemein frisch und dynamisch.
Nick Cave, John Baptiste, Justin Vernon (Bon Iver), Aloe Blacc, Benjamin Booker und Son Little. Für die
Produktion verantwortlich ist M. Ward. Beseelt!

Stalawa - Rough Winer

Scotch Bonnet
29.03.2016

Rising French producer and Scotch Bonnet family member Stalawa skips back to the digital 80s for an old-meets-new track creation to get you jumping. Stalawa has taken the original vocal to 1989's Rough Winer by high-voiced deejay Lloyd D Stiff (on the Digital English imprint) and built a different riddim in a sprightly major-key style. This production has even been mastered in Mungo's studio on a Sansui WS-X1 multi-track cassette recorder to give a genuine 80's lo-fi sound. From its visceral drumrolls to Lloyd D's PG rated slack lyrics in praise of athletic dancing, this is a true modern classic.

The next cuts on Stalawa's Rough Winer riddim reflect its vintage 80s yet modern dancehall friendly flavour. The first is the reassuringly upbeat Don't Panic by contemporary Italian singer and friend of Mungo's, Marina P. Her singjay delivery is complimented on the flip by an ode to minding one's own business by granite toned Jamaican deejay Dignitary Stylish (of 1986 hit Jah Send Mi Come fame).

Green Elements - Experience One

10 song LP - 6 of 10 tracks previously unreleased !

At long last, the legendary unreleased Still Cool album! Producer Carl "Stereo" Fletcher had been planning this LP on his Uprising label since the late 1970's. In fact, it was nearly released in Nigeria (!!!), but due to a faulty tape machine on a trip to Lagos, it never happened. Finally released nearly 40 years later, here it is. Still Cool, like Stereo and his Uprising label, were part of the vibrant musical arm of the 12 Tribes of Israel Rastafarian group in the 1970's. Still Cool regularly performed on 12 Tribes stage shows, just check the photos in the LP jacket. Four of the ten tracks on this album were released as singles back in the day, including one ("Sweeter Music") credited only to Still Cool vocalist Frankie Diamond. The other six tracks have never been released until now

BIRDY RELEASES HER BRAND NEW ALBUM BEAUTIFUL LIES' ON ATLANTIC RECORDS ON MARCH 25.

BIRDY PLAYS A SPECIAL INTIMATE GIG AT LONDON'S OSLO IN HACKNEY ON FEBRUARY 9.

The incredible Birdy releases her third studio album Beautiful Lies' on Atlantic Records on March 25.

The album features 14 new tracks including the current single Keeping Your Head Up' which was written and co-produced by Birdy. The song is currently on the Radio One playlist and also on heavy rotation on BBC TV where it previews their 2016 schedule.

Talking about the album Birdy said, This is my coming of age record. I've learned so much in the last few years and have been able to use the many experiences - good and bad - as inspiration when writing this album. This is the album that I've been able to steer most confidently and proudly, from the writing to the production to the artwork. A lot of the album is about finding light in the dark and overcoming the times when we feel completely lost.'

The album was produced by collaborators including Jim Abbiss (Arctic Monkeys/Adele) and Craig Silvey (Arcade Fire/Florence and the Machine).

The last few years have seen Birdy work on an incredible array of projects, including highly prestigious film scores. Most recently her song Let It All Go' was released as a duet with Rhodes whilst her classic song Wings' was covered by Nothing But Thieves. Birdy's music was used in 'The Hunger Games' and Brave' whilst she was also commissioned to write especially for the film The Fault In Our Stars'.

Mamiffer - The World Unseen

Mamiffer

The World Unseen

2x12inchSIGE045LP
Sige Records
01.04.2016

For Mamiffer's Faith Coloccia and Aaron Turner, music is a divine language, a code to be deciphered, a map riddled with clues. Their latest album, The World Unseen, is a conceptual and liminal document of numinous connection through an experience with loss. It is an exploration of subconscious and psychic bonds between the past and present, and the ways in which the musical devices of repetition and incantation create hands across the chasm that divide the human from the divine.

Through the use of piano, voice, guitar, Wurlitzer organ, bass synthesizer, tape machines, and effects pedals, Coloccia and Turner have created an eight-song aural lexicon that vacillates between Arvo Pärt's delicate minimalist beauty, Thomas Köner's narcotic pulses of noise, and Richard Pinhas' sublime textural patterns. Further expanding upon their explorations, Mamiffer enlisted Eyvind Kang for string arrangements. Geneviève Beaulieu (Menace Ruine) and Joe Preston (Thrones) make guest appearances on 'Domestication of the Ewe pt. III', contributing additional choral vocals and bass, and adding greater dimension to their auditory crossings. Despite this impressive arsenal of musicians and instruments, Mamiffer ultimately depends as much on empty space as they do upon the various oscillating frequencies within their sound. 'The record is imperfect,' says Coloccia. 'It has within its heart an incompleteness, a stillness containing the presence of absence and loss.'

It was a slow and patient journey to arrive at the final formation of The World Unseen. Chance, accident and imperfections were used as compositional tools, and unplanned chaos revealed itself as having its own harmonious order and healing litany. The songs took their shape from source material that stretched back as far as 2011. Mamiffer then began to capture those songs in recording sessions at their home studio and at AVAST! Studio in Seattle with producer/engineer Randall Dunn throughout 2013 and 2015

Matt Carlson / Michael Stirling / Doug Theriault - Aakash
  • A1: Mishra Bhairavi
  • B1: Clouds into Midnight

Aakash marks the debut recording of Portland, OR based trio Matt Carlson, Michael Stirling and Doug Theriault. Derived from live improvisational performances, Root Strata veteran Carlson's (of Golden Retriever) rich analog synthesizers are joined by real time processing of Stirling's (a disciple of late Hindustani Master Pandit Pran Nath and student of Terry Riley) lilting voice and the idiosyncratic guitar work and electronics of Theriault. Dipping into a kind of liminal void, Aakash isn't just cosmic raga. It's a subtle journey, micro visions of inner terrain.

Mikael Lind - Intentions And Variations
  • A1: Intentions and Variations
  • A2: Sleeping Pauper
  • B1: Unyielding Rocks
  • B2: With a Murmur
  • B3: Eternal Weaver

Intentions and Variations is composer Mikael Lind's most ambient work to date, absent of beats, filled with soundscapes and sound manipulation. Weightless music that may make you think of Christopher Bissonette, Deaf Center or Stephen Mathieu. Lind's tracks are based on simple themes - often performed by a piano or a viola - but his compositions gradually evolve into more complex creations and mature textures by letting electronically manipulated sounds interact. As in Lind's previous releases, these five sonic explorations are more comforting than agitating. But make no mistake: underneath their beautiful surface, threatening forces constantly loom, waiting to be unleashed: In 'Unyielding Rocks' the shimmering sounds are almost drowned in a wall of droning distortions. But those multi-layered elements never fully negate the solemn aspect of Lind's music, or, as he puts it: "Complexity is a wonderful thing, but should never be an end in itself." Mikael Lind is a composer of experimental ambient music, currently residing in Reykjavik, Iceland. 'Intentions and Variations' is his debut for Morr Music.

Mother Of The Unicorn - Variations

After having met through various other projects over the course of 2014, MOTHER OF THE UNICORN set out to record their debut album in early Autumn of that year with producer Tad Klimp (Fenster/Saroos/Slow Steve). Combining in uences from glitch music's 'aesthetic of failure' with the limitations of an analog recording set up Variations combines abstract electronics with the warm warble of old organs and some slightly rusty guitars. It's like an old wooden room lled with the light of a disco ball, nostalgic, hypnotic and a bit sparkly. The lyrical themes include travel, economics and clubbing. Listen with a cup of tea and a hangover.
