Putumayo/Exil
08.04.2016

Various - Every Song Has Its End - Sonic Dispatches From

Mato - "t" Stands For Trouble / Enter The Dragon

Thomas Blanchot, 40 years old percussionist and drummer, started his production structure Mato Production in 2001, where he collaborated and directed for many projects.

Composer, music publisher and producer of music for TV, advertising, films and records, he also began a career as reggae producer since 2006, under the name "MATO". Since then he's released music through various projects concepts, coming out through labels such as Makasound, EDR Records or Big Singles. In the meantime he developed a real trademark: taking over classics French, Hip-Hop, or Pop song, into roots reggae-dub new versions.

Besides since 2010, Mato has built a solid reputation thanks to his hot remixes of Hip-Hop classics on Stix Records. And in 2014, he presented Homework Dub, giving his own vision of the multiplatinum classic album by Daft Punk, quickly acclaimed internationally as a true performance.

Today, Mato is back with another target for his special skills as a tailor of reggae music, this time focusing on classic songs from original soundtracks. The result is an album titled Hollywoo Dub, which is planned for release later this year on Stix Records.

On this first brilliant 2 tracks single, he also delivers two another renditions, First, he takes over the amazing 'T' Stands for Trouble' by Marvin Gaye for a cosmic reggae trip, then he provides a new life to Enter The Dragon' by legendary composer Lalo Schiffrin.

Matt Dunkley - Six Cycles

Matt Dunkley

Six Cycles

12inchVGLP018
Village Green
14.03.2016

'Six Cycles' is the debut artist album from one of the world's leading orchestrators, arrangers and conductors; Matt Dunkley.

Having worked on films such as 'Inception', 'The Dark Knight' and 'Black Swan', and with artists such as Patti Smith, Nick Cave, Massive Attack and Kronos Quartet, as well as a successful composer for film and television, it was only a matter of time before Matt Dunkley released his own album. Recorded with the renowned Babelsberg Film Orchestra, the result is a rich and nuanced cinematic soundscape, replete with stirring builds of Wagnerian grandeur.

'The inspiration for the six pieces that comprise 'Six Cycles' all derive from disparate sources, whether it a piece of poetry, a painting or the emotion of personal loss. Initially they seemed to be unrelated, but as I listened to them as a whole, a sense of them belonging together slowly emerged, forming a true "cycle". I want the listener to discover their own world within my music, hence the wilfully enigmatic titles.'
- Matt Dunkley

Matt Dunkley studied trumpet and piano at the London College of Music and has gone on to conduct all of the UK's top orchestras as well as international ensembles such as The Los Angeles Philharmonic (at The Hollywood Bowl), and The Sydney Symphony Orchestra (at the Sydney Opera House). He has scored two feature films, a number of network series for British Television as well as music for adverts and production libraries. For the theatre, he wrote and arranged a ground-breaking arena version of Peter Pan: The Neverending Story, that is currently on a world tour, and he has just completed the score to Flanders Fields, a theatre piece set alongside a war grave cemetery in Belgium.

By the mid-seventies, the profile of Jamaica's largest and most successful export was chiefly headed by Bob Marley and The Wailers with their exotic and exciting brand of Jamaican roots music. By
1975, the USA was grasping the phenomenon with the release of Toots and The Maytals' 1973 album Funky Kingston. It was a move that would inevitably open doors for the band and while they could never match Bob Marley's or Peter Tosh's commercial appeal abroad, their significance and legacy in reggae music is unmatched.
Riding high on their new recognition, Toots and The Maytals rolled into Los Angeles, performing a blistering set of new and old material. That night, the Roxy played host to an explosion of authentic, Jamaican rock steady reggae sounds in a show that recalls the legacies of James Brown, Otis Redding, Wilson Pickett and Bob Marley's own appearance here in 1976.
Klondike proudly presents the entire original KMET-FM broadcast of Toots and The Maytals live in Los Angeles from The Roxy on 1st October 1975. Professionally re-mastered original broadcast with background liners and rare archival photos.

Farima Al Qadiri - Brute

Farima Al Qadiri

Brute

12inchHDBLP031
Hyperdub
11.03.2016

Brute (broot) noun: brute, plural noun: brutes - a savagely violent person or animal. origin: late Middle English (as an adjective): from Old French brut(e), from Latin brutus 'dull, stupid.' You are no longer peacefully assembling,' announces the voice of an officer on a Long Range Acoustic Device (LRAD), a sonic weapon employed by riot police, capable of deafening a target by exceeding humane levels. Both a corporeal and symbolic tool of violence, the LRAD violates the physiological space between state control and the body using amplified sound. Fatima Al Qadiri returns to Hyperdub for her 2nd album Brute. Made from the perspective of her transnational experience, her new record explores the theme of authority, the relationship between police, citizens and protest worldwide, particularly of her adopted home in the United States. Musically, Brute teeters between rage and despair, manifesting in restrained percussion, sampled and processed recordings of urban protest, and the signature minor progressions that distinguish Al Qadiri's body of work. Reflecting on the carceral state (Oubliette), the militarization of police (Endzone, Curfew), the fragile boundaries between defence and the deadly use of force (Battery, 10-34), and the relentless violation of the dignity of protesters and activists (Breach, Blows, Fragmentation), the record is a sombre tribute to lost life and agency. The album art is a detail of the sculpture Po-Po (2015) by Josh Kline, heavily altered by art director Babak Radboy. Reimagining a popular children's show character as a militarized SWAT officer with implanted surveillance technology, Radboy subjects Po-Po to extreme image processing, situating the installation photo as a still from a fictitious blockbuster. As a tribute to those on the front lines of protest and a condemnation of neoliberal fascism, Brute provides a chilling sonic backdrop to a world of normalised brutality, a painful illumination of the facade of democracy.

Six Degrees/Exil
01.04.2016

Chr. in
Taranta Power kennt.

At the end of the 70s, The Monochrome Set were part of the first wave of 'post punk' bands. Right from the beginning, the band earned a solid reputation as purveyors of fine pop, gaining praise from 80s contemporaries such as Morrissey and Edwyn Collins. Importantly, in later years, this praise has continued with artists such as Franz Ferdinand, The Divine Comedy and Graham Coxon, all citing the band as a key influence on their own work. The Monochrome Set sound has often been described as 'timeless', and that alone explains why, over the years, the band has continued gaining admirers.

33 years after the release of the classic 'Volume, Contrast, Brilliance... Vol.1' comes this wonderful collection of unreleased and rare demos. Spanning 1978 to 1991, these range from DIY to high quality studio recordings - many are real gems, but some also failed to be released or properly recorded for a variety of reasons (which are explained in the liner notes) - bad timing, odd decisions, even forgetfulness! The range of styles displayed are typical of this iconic and highly influential band - slices of their sound can be heard throughout the indie and mainstream genres of many countries.

Glitterbeat is pleased to announce a very special album/DVD package. As you all know our label began with releases from Mali and this new album, which looks deeply at the roots of that music, has a special place in our hearts. Not only is the audio stunning but there is a DVD included with 11 beautifully produced mini-docs that profile the musicians and their sonic culture. "Every Song Has Its End" is also the second release in Glitterbeat's Hidden Musics series.
Bamako-based producer/educator Paul Chandler has been documenting the sonic and cultural complexities of Malian traditional music for more than a decade and "Every Song Has Its End" is an out-of-time, visceral collection of sounds from Chandler's unparalleled archive. Echoes of these sounds can of course be heard in the urbanized Malian music that has been embraced throughout the world, but the songs, ritual soundscapes and accompanying images found here are undoubtedly more raw, foundational and filled with surprise than the Malian music we are accustomed to.

Accompanied by a recording engineer and a video-maker, Chandler has ventured to off-the-grid villages and crossroad towns all across the vast Malian landscape. Through a network of long-nurtured local contacts this small team has sought out practicing traditional musicians and their under-documented and often endangered musics. Immersive and exhilarating, these field recordings and videos give us a privileged glimpse into the intricacies of the Malian musical experience.

Without doubt, this is Malian music at its finest.

Last year's release of "The Midlands Roots Explosion Volume One", saw the culmination of many years work spent tracking down artists and tapes to shine a light on one of England's greatest, yet most overlooked musical scenes, the home grown take on reggae that briefly flourished from the mid-seventies and had almost disappeared little more than a decade later.

Volume Two starts off in exactly the same way as its predecessor with Handsworth's biggest musical exports, the legendary Steel Pulse and "Bun Dem produced by the legendary Dennis Bovell. Our first act new to the series are Natural Mystique with their 1982 single "Generals" whilst tracks 3, 4 and 5 round off the missing A and B sides from some of the most popular artists we included last time with Iganda's "Mark Of Slavery", Carnastoan's "Sweet Melody" and yet another Generals, this one from Musical Youth featuring the same line up that caused so much surprise and positive feedback with their inclusion on Volume One.

"Africans" from Bass Dance featuring a second appearance from former Steel Pulse guitarist/vocalist Basil Gabbidon, is the first of four previously unreleased tracks. The other three that we've managed to track down on long forgotten tapes, are Leicester's Groundation with "Rebel" recorded a few years before "Fa Ward" which we included last time, "Cannot Take It Away", another lost gem from Handsworth's Mystic Foundation and "Equalisation" another lost slice of early eighties roots from Wolverhampton's Capital Letters.
The late Linton Haughton is another new name with his scarce Shield label 12" cut "Hustling Man". Also making their first appearances, are Afrikan Star with "Run And Hide" originally issued in 1980 on Black Vinyl Records and from the Crucial Music stable, Sledge Hammer with "Ruled By The Stone" released as a 7" single on the Crucial Music Inc. label. The remaining three tracks are provided by label favourites and key players in the Birmingham scene, Black Symbol, Sceptre and Eclipse and showcase songs from the individual albums we've previously released by each band.
British roots reggae at its finest.

Starting life as a small New York event aimed at raising awareness for Fela
Kuti's musical message, Rich Medina's Jump N Funk party has now been
rocking dancefloors across the globe for over 15 years. Honouring Fela's
contribution to music as well as his political and cultural legacy, Medina has
made his events a platform to celebrate Afro-Life across the Black Diaspora.
With guests such as Wunmi, the cast of Fela! On Broadway, Asiko and
Antibalas providing captivating live performances, Jump N Funk is so much
more than a club night. In creating this compilation to represent the spirit of his
events, Rich Medina has chosen an eclectic selection of undeniably afro-tinged,
unashamedly life-affirming music. With most tracks either referencing, sampling
or inspired by the great man, the record also includes material by Fela himself,
as well as son Seun Kuti and long-time band member Tony Allen the inventor of
the afrobeat set drum syncopation that is equally as notorious as Fela and his
message... The album's artwork has been lovingly created by Lemi Ghariokwu,
the fabled Nigerian artist who designed some of Fela's most iconic covers. From
the record's sleeve to the music contained within, Jump N Funk is a cultural
artefact with one foot in the past, the other in the future. An echo of Fela's
message: a reminder to celebrate, to empower, to progress.

Renegades Of Jazz - Afro Cookie

"Afro Cookie" is the first single to be taken from David Hanke's forthcoming album 'Moyo Wangu' under his Renegades Of Jazz name. 'Moyo Wangu' (My heart) reflects on the years he spent during his early childhood with his parents in Arusha/Tanzania, showcasing twelve songs made out of his love for Afrofunk and recalling the time he spent there. the first song "Afro Cookie" has the distinctive Renegades Of Jazz sound, a modern Afrofunk anthem, which was also the starting point back for the 'Moyo Wangu' album. On the flip side, the track 'Pounding Song' with it's traditional sung chants is a work song in a dust infused uptempo Afrojazz treatment.

Banda Black Rio's 'Maria Fumaca' is one of the strongest Brazilian samba-disco-funk-soul-fusion albums of all time.

Banda Black Rio were formed in 1976 by the late Oberdan Magalhães in Rio de Janeiro. They revolutionised 'black instrumental music' at the time with their Brazilian re-interpretation of soul, jazz, funk and disco grooves, inspired by the likes of Tim Maia and reminiscent of Kool & The Gang and Earth, Wind & Fire during their most on-point period of the 1970's. 'Maria Fumaca' is the groups first album, originally released by Atlantic in 1977, a record that bought the group worldwide fame.

The title track is a real stand-out for us and a long term firm favourite. 'Miss Cheryll', more of a disco/AOR jam, was released by RCA UK in 1980 as the track become popular within several London scenes.
