Jagger Botchway is most famous for his work with the Hedzoleh Soundz and Hugh Masekela. Jagger was also the driving force behind the highly sought-after Ghanaian afro-funk masterpiece Moving World by the Kelenkye Band.
Deano Sounds, along with Voodoo Funk's Frank Gossner, teamed up to release the Kelenkye Band's later material, Jungle Funk, back in 2012. Jagger went back into the studio with a group of musicians he had played with from various points in his career to record an album of unique soca and highlife sounds. What was put down on tape was a heavy mix of percussion, striking highlife guitar lines and futuristic synth stabs with soaring African voices. Deano Sounds and Jagger rescued the original multi-track DAT tapes that were
hiding in obscurity in Ghana.

Cultures of Soul invited a host of today's best remixers to give them the freedom to create their own interpretations of the material. These producers include Berlin's Africaine 808, Manchester's Ruf Dug, Switzerland's Alma Negra and New York's Names You Can Trust.

Sounding at times like Vashti Bunyan fronting Sunforest, Floret Silva' is a haunting mix of medieval music and progressive / psych / folk with Latin lyrics straight from the Carmina Burana book.

The Floret Silva' project was born when minimalist composer Kay Hoffman went to Italy in the mid-70s. Once there, she met with welsh soprano Jacqueline Darby, who had recently been working with the Italian avant-prog band Pierrot Lunaire. Jaqueline was working on new compositions with RCA producer Vincento Miccocci in Rome and she asked Kay if she was interested in getting involved in a new project. Kay agreed and Gaio Chiochio and Arturo Stalteri of Pierrot Lunaire also joined them on this new venture. Gaio travelled from Rome to play the guitar and other friends of Jacqueline also offered their collaboration.

In a short time, Kay wrote all the material, inspired by the Carmina Burana book and her love of Medieval and Renaissance music. Kay also contributed vocals, clavinet and piano and together with Jacqueline Darby - on haunting vocals - plus an impressive cast of jazz/rock/progressive musicians, they recorded Floret Silva' during 1977-78, under the guidance of Vicento Micocci.

Sadly, RCA backed off and the album went unreleased until a copy of the masters found their way to Japan, where the great Belle Antique label put out the first vinyl edition of Floret Silva' in 1985. In 2006, US label Robot Records resurrected it again for the first CD release.

After many years out of print on vinyl, we present a new edition of this lost piece from the 70s Italian underground scene. A visionary album which anticipated the sound practiced by many neo-folk bands some decades later.

For this album, the legendary Congolese band Konono N°1 has joined forces with acclaimed Angolan/Portuguese artist Batida aka Pedro Coquenão. Deluxe double LP with colour innersleeves and download code.

Along with producer Vincent Kenis, they convened in Batida's garage-cum-studio in Lisbon with a series of collaborators and friends of Batida's, reflecting the city's vibrant, cosmopolitan music life: guitarist Papa Juju (the leader of Lisbon's foremost Afro-fusion band Terrakota), vocalist Selma Uamusse (one of the best young African singers currently residing in Portugal) and MC AF Diaphra, a distinguished slam poet and an artist/producer in his own right.

As we all know by now, Konono N°1 are based in Kinshasa, DRC, but originate from the Bakongo ethnic group, which lives in a region straddling the border between the Congo and Angola. Hence certain similarities between Konono's rhythms and some types of Angolan music from which Batida has drawn inspiration for his albums and shows.

This encounter was obviously bound to happen... but was nevertheless quite an adventure: blending the worlds of electronics beats and organic grooves was a challenge to which the parties have risen beautifully to create this exciting, unheard-of new strain of Afro-electro music. The album was jointly produced by Vincent Kenis and Pedro Coquenão.

Die CD, die wie auch die EP bei Sonar Kollektiv erscheint, startet mit dem majestätisch-schwebenden Guten-Morgen-Ständchen "Break Of Dawn" und Miekes zuckersüßer Stimme. Danach nimmt der Titeltrack den Hörer an die Hand und führt in einen wundersamen, alten Wald, der viele Geschichten zu erzählen hat. Zum Beispiel von einen Mann ohne Schuhe ("UFO"), einer Freundschaft mit einem Baum ("The Owl") und einem Spaziergang am Meer voller Erinnerungen ("Bantry Bay"), aber vor allem immer wieder von diesem Gefühl namens Sommer ("August" und "Summer"). Unterm Strich beinhaltet das Album elf versöhnlich-gelassene Songs, die auch bei etwas düsterer Orchestrierung sanft und optimistisch ausfallen. Die Band um Mieke Miami - Carolina Bigge an den Drums, Thomas Stieger am Bass und an der Gitarre sowie Johannes Saal an den Keys und ebenfalls an der Gitarre - haben zusammen einen Sound kreiert, der Miekes Songwriting nicht nur untermalt, sondern geradezu beflügelt. Breadwoman & Other Tales are the collected recordings of a language arising. It is the sound and document of Anna Homler divining speech, lyrical fragments, and melody for music composed, mixed, and engineered by Steve Moshier. It's 1982 and Anna is driving an ocean blue classic Cadillac to meet renowned poet and playwright Deena Metzger in Topanga Canyon, Los Angeles. Passing a non-descript desert patch where tall wheat and mustard flowers grow, Anna opens her mouth and sings in a salient stream of rhythmic, melodic sound. Breadwoman is born, but not by immaculate conception. For Homler, performance art had recently become 'a form big enough to contain everything happening' during her studies with Rachel Rosenthal at Otis College of Art and Design. As this performative freedom fed into the enchanted vocalese, the character of Breadwoman emerged. Homler tread the same multi-disciplinary waters where Steve Moshier and the Cartesian Reunion Memorial Orchestra (CRMO), a communal avant-garde urban chamber music ensemble formed in LA in 1979, floated. When their currents connected, it was clear Homler and Moshier were kin, crossing genres through intensely physical de-significations of music: quasi-theatrical, fully mythic, ritualistic performances. Instead of confining Anna as 'a vocalist,' Moshier recognized Anna's voice as a sonic element. To accomplish the recordings of this collection, Moshier chose the least song-like material from Homler's handheld cassette transcriptions and composed music considerately. Anna would then record chants and song variations which Steve would tweak for final touches through his arsenal of analog equipment. Although Breadwoman stands outside of time, she is is rich in the ingredients of 1980s Los Angeles performance art, renegade DIY punk, gallery culture, galvanized jazz, underground cassette-trading culture, drag extravaganzas, and esoteric meaning-making mysticism. Breadwoman is a storyteller — she's so very old she's turned into bread. Breadwoman says: If you don't try to understand, you will. She is the voice, and the voice is cosmic reality's musicality. Through Breadwoman & Other Tales, we hear material meet mythos. Anna Homler and Steve Moshier's Breadwoman & Other Tales will be released February 4, 2016 on LP, CD, and digital formats. Extensive liner notes and artist interviews were overseen by Andrew Choate. The collection was assembled by RVNG, Anna Homler, and Steve Moshier, who both continue making music to this day.

Der 1957 in Kingston geborene Dennis Brown ist einer der bekanntesten Reggae-Sänger aus Jamaika. Wenngleich er es außerhalb der Insel nicht mit der Popularität von Bob Marley aufnehmen konnte, so genoss er als "Kronprinz des Reggae" in seiner Heimat nahezu den gleichen Respekt. Vor allem auch deshalb, weil er seit den beginnenden 1970er-Jahren bis zu seinem Tod 1999 rund 75 Alben aufgenommen hat. Seine produktivste Zeit hatte Brown, als er in den 70ern mit Winston Holness, besser bekannt als Niney the Observer, zusammenarbeitete. Für Brown war Holness ein echtes Karrieresprungbrett. In der nicht gerade armen Produzentenliga Jamaikas nimmt Niney the Observer eine herausragende Stellung ein. Seine Lehrjahre absolvierte er bei Bunny Lee und Lee "Scratch" Perry. Neben Brown produzierte Holness unter anderem auch Sugar Minott, Delroy Wilson, Ken Booth, The Heptones, Jacob Miller, Junior Delgado, Dillinger, Gregory Isaacs, Johnny Clarke, Horace Andy und Freddie McGregor. Viele Reggae-Klassiker entstanden unter seiner Ägide. "Dubbing At King Tubby" enthält insgesamt 18 Stücke, die Niney the Observer mit Dennis Brown im Studio von King Tubby einspielte, und die vom Großmeister des Dub persönlich einen finalen Schliff bzw. Tiefgang verpasst bekamen.

Die Geschichte von Epitaph begann im Winter 1969/70 im Dortmunder Musikclub Fantasio, in dessen
Kellerräumen der Brite Cliff Jackson (Gesang, Gitarre), sein Landsmann James McGillivray (Schlagzeug) und
Bassist Bernd Kolbe beständig an ihrem Programm feilten, während sie wöchentlich im Stockwerk darüber
zwischen Größen wie Black Sabbath, Rory Gallagher, Yes und Argent auftraten. Seither ist viel passiert.
Doch trotz einiger Umbesetzungen sind Epitaph nach zahlreichen Veröffentlichungen und vielen erfolgreichen
Tourneen auch 2016 noch eine feste Größe im Rockgeschäft. Und vor allem eine Band, die vor Energie und
Spielfreude nur so sprüht, wie das zuletzt veröffentlichte Werk "Fire From The Soul" bestens unter Beweis
stellte. Das Album erschien im Frühjahr 2016 als LP in limitierter 500er-Auflage auf rotem Vinyl mit BonusCD. Aufgrund der großen Nachfrage kommt es zum Jahresbeginn 2017 als 180-Gramm-Pressung inklusive
Bonus-CD noch einmal in die Läden. "Fire From The Soul" vereint alle Elemente, die man von einem EpitaphAlbum erwarten darf: singende Twin-Gitarren und zündende Rocksongs mit mehrstimmigen Chorgesängen.
Als Gastmusiker an den Aufnahmen beteiligt waren Tim Reese (Truckstop), Pete Sage (Santiano) und Klaus
Henatsch (Nektar, Big Mama).

Zehn Jahre hat es gedauert, bis der in Frankreich geborene und heute in Genf lebende Vollblutkünstler Renaud Lewandowski mit "Cerca Trova" nach dem 2006 mit Quenum produzierten Werk "As Told On The Eve Of ..." mal wieder ein Album vorlegte. Dabei war der gute Mann alles andere als untätig. Wer Sympathien für Tanzmusik hegt, weiß, dass Lee Van Dowski seit rund 15 Jahren aufs Engste mit elektronischer Musik verbunden sowie für energiegeladene House/Techno-Produktionen und DJ-Sets berühmt ist. Ein Blick auf die Labels, bei denen Lee Van Dowski bereits veröffentlicht hat, unterstreicht Lee Van Dowskis Reputation nachhaltig: BPitch Control, Cadenza, Rekids und Soma sind schlicht die Crème de la Crème. 2013 dockte Monsieur Lewandowski bei Anja Schneiders Label Mobilee an. Offensichtlich ein Bad im Jungbrunnen, denn mit dem Digitalrelease "050504" und der EP "Elle" unterstrich Lee Van Dowski im Anschluss eindrucksvoll, dass er längst nicht zum alten Eisen gehört. "Cerca Trova" enthält 14 Tracks, welche die ganze ElektronikBandbreite von Ambient über Acid und Tech House bis Breakbeats abdecken. On top gibt's eine Kollaboration mit seiner alten Freundin Caroline Hervé aka Miss Kittin. Sie steuerte die Vocals zum Track I.L.A.N.E.N.O bei. Toll: Die Veröffentlichung enthält eine "Mobilee Back To Back"-Bonus-Mix-CD mit Tracks von Anja Schneider, Maya Jane Coles, Burnski und Oliver Deutschmann.

Mit ihrem Kinofilm "Grüße aus Fukushima" ist es der Ausnahmeregisseurin und -autorin Doris Dörrie einmal mehr gelungen, eine universell-poetische Geschichte vom Leben und Loslassen zu erzählen. Erstmals entstand einer ihrer Spielfilme in Japan und in eindrucksvollem Schwarzweiß. Im Mittelpunkt steht die junge Deutsche Marie (Rosalie Thomass). Auf der Flucht vor ihren zerplatzten Lebensträumen und dem Verlust ihrer großen Liebe reist sie für die Organisation Clowns4Help in die Präfektur Fukushima. Zusammen mit dem Clown Moshe (Moshe Cohen) will sie den Opfern der Dreifachkatastrophe von 2011, die auch Jahre später noch in Notunterkünften leben, ein wenig Freude bringen. Eine Aufgabe, für die Marie, das muss sie sich schon bald eingestehen, überhaupt nicht geeignet ist. Doch bevor sie erneut davonläuft, beschließt Marie, bei der störrischen Satomi (Kaori Momoi) zu bleiben, der letzten Geisha Fukushimas, die auf eigene Faust in ihr zerstörtes Haus in der Sperrzone zurückziehen will. Zwei Frauen, wie sie unterschiedlicher nicht sein können, die aber beide - jede auf ihre Art - in der Vergangenheit gefangen sind und lernen müssen, sich von ihren Schuldgefühlen und der Last ihrer Erinnerungen zu befreien. Die Musik von Ulrike Haage ist intensiv und zurückhaltend zugleich.

Für Pete Josef ist es nur natürlich und konsequent, sein Debüt-Album bei Sonar Kollektiv herauszubringen. Immerhin hat der junge, in der Bristol-Szene verwurzelte Brite bei dem Berliner Label in den letzten drei Jahren schon an diversen Veröffentlichungen als Sänger und Songschreiber mitgewirkt. Genau genommen startete die Zusammenarbeit im Herbst 2012. Damals signte Labelboss Oliver Glage "Make It Good" von The White Lamp, Josefs Projekt mit dem Ex-Underworld-Mitglied Darren Emerson, für Sonar Kollektiv. Weiterhin beteiligte sich Josef an Alex Barcks Album "Reunion", an Tracks von Paskal & Urban Absolutes und Marlow sowie am kürzlich erschienenen ComixXx-Debüt "Broken Connection". Nun also "Colour". Josefs elf Titel starkes Erstlingswerk ist zu einem fulminanten Streich geraten, die zahlreichen Kollaborationen haben ihre Spuren hinterlassen. Dandy, Frauenheld, Provokateur und immer eine filterlose Gitanes zwischen den Lippen - so kennt man den französischen Chansonnier, Filmschauspieler, Komponisten und Schriftsteller Serge Gainsbourg. Anlässlich seines 25. Todestages am 2. März 2016 hat das französische Label Wagram eine Doppel-CD zusammengestellt, welche sich auf die besten Jazz-Stücke des "Kohlkopfs", wie er sich selbst gerne nannte, konzentriert. Während die erste CD mit "Le Poinçonneur des Lilas" (aus seinem 1958er-Debütalbum "Du chant à la une!"), "L'eau à La Bouche", "Les Cigarillos" und "Intoxicated Man" von Gainsbourg selbst vorgetragene Meilensteine versammelt, finden sich auf der zweiten CD fantastische Interpretationen von Gainsbourg-Songs. Hier sind Künstler wie Sylvain Luc, Richard Galliano, Chloe Perrier, Clotilde Rullaud oder Pierre-Alain Goulach vertreten. Super Mama Djombo is one of West Africa's greatest roots orchestras and especially for the people of Guiné-Bissau. The band marked a new national identity and reinvented Portuguese Creole as a language of national unity.

Tiny Guiné Bissau is located between Senegal at its northern border and Guinée Conakry on its eastern and southern border. A former part of the mighty Mali empire, it was then one of the last African countries not to have gained its freedom from Portugal, its colonial power. Hence a fierce war for independence struck the country, until independence was eventually won over in 1974, after many years of suffering.

Hailing from a boy scout camp deep in the jungle of late 1960's, Super Mama Djombo's founding musicians have come a long way to display their wonderful music to the world. Drummer Zé, singer Herculano, and original guitar players Gonçalo and Taborda picked the name Mama Djombo as an homage to a local goddess revered by independence fighters.

In the early 1970's, the Mama Djombo underground orchestra played mostly for secret political rallies supporting the PAIGC, the major Independence Movement for Guiné and Cabo Verde. Adriano Atchutchi became the bandleader after independence, bringing a book full of his songs. Atchutchi recruited singer Dulce Neves, adding creole sweetness to its already heady mix of juvenile enthusiasm, candid melodies and touches of luso-tropicalism.

The long awaited debut release by Irish producer Toby Kaar has finally arrived.

Spread over four tracks, Gumbrielle EP is tensely arranged euphoric beat music, bastardised, alienised and revitalised for a future dancefloor.

The EP was made on a 9 year old computer, which has started to pack in. A lot of the samples were things I found in libraries, pretty basic stuff that was flipped essentially', explains Toby. I started making music when my brother downloaded a cracked copy of Fruity Loops 4. I started making loops and patterns, with no musical theory. It was more the shapes I was interested in. That's still the case. The interest in actual music came after that - making the stuff got me into other people's work.'

Despite the absence of any release until now, Toby has earned a reputation for his exhilarating live performances, which translates well on the energetic Gumbrielle EP.

Created by industry legend, MMO Music Group founder and true godfather of karaoke (but that's another story) Irv Kratka alongside producer Eric Kriss, Inner City Records was formed in 1976. During its decade or so in existence, the label put together a formidable catalogue of jazz music and was voted Record Label Of The Year in 1979 by the International Jazz Critics Poll. As well as 'classic jazz', the label also gave a platform to more avant-garde material and dabbled in the emerging 'jazz fusion' sounds of the day. Fondly remembered by jazz lovers everywhere, the label boasts a particularly fervent fan-base in London, where many of its releases found favour in the underground dance clubs of Soho and Convent Garden. Fittingly enough, London DJ and tastemaker Kev Beadle is the man chosen to put together this very special compilation of Inner City's finest moments. Having previously curated projects for labels such as Blue Note and Cadet, Kev has dug deep in the crates to emerge with this gem of an album.

Im Gegenteil, denn Atlas Sound ist das Pseudonym des Deerhunter-Frontmanns Bradford Cox. Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel" ist also vielmehr ein Soloalbum - im wahrsten Wortsinn. Außer Cox bekommen die Hörer nichts zu hören, das ganze Werk entstand in seinem Schlafzimmer. Was nicht bedeutet, es hier mit simplen Songs zu tun zu haben. Tatsächlich fallen diese eher komplex und ausufernd aus. Unterm Strich liegt ein Album vor, das Garage und Ambient wunderschön kombiniert. Die Wiederveröffentlichung von "Let The Blind Lead Those Who Can See But Cannot Feel" macht den Langspieler erstmals als Vinyl verfügbar und enthält als Bonus die "Another Bedroom EP". Deren sechs Stücke wurden im Februar 2008 produziert und von Jason Ward gemastert.

Auch "Halos" kann in dieser Hinsicht erneut positiv überraschen. Songs wie "Gazelles", "Never Gonna Be Mine" oder "Other Lovers" packen die Hörer am Schlafittchen, bevor diese auch nur den Bandnamen buchstabiert haben. Nichts an dieser Platte scheint zufällig, jeder Anschlag sitzt, die Gitarre ist puristisch, das Schlagzeugspiel große Jazz-Schule. "Halos" knurrt und wimmert, brummt und summt aus jeder Ritze. Das Beste dabei: Gleichzeitig spielen Hodja dermaßen leicht und frei auf, als ob man sich auf eine Zigarette im Keller zum Jammen getroffen hat.

In 1965 the Jolly label released Luigi Tenco's first album. For fans and collectors SAAR is today re-releasing one of his masterpieces. This LP, recorded in a studio in Pero (Milan, Italy), was made with the collaboration of the best Jazz musicians available, personally selected by Ezio Leoni, who was at the time Jolly Records' artistic director. From the 'thoughts' of his friends and of those who worked with Tenco, this is an unusual portrait of our artist, who's clearly not perpetually 'angry' with the world, but an ironic person instead, often able to laugh and have fun, even with jokes. The controversial aspects of Tenco's character and personality are confirmed by the testimonies of those who were close to him during his short life, and in the release of this album.

Ist von Plague Vendor die Rede ist, kommen mit Rock'n'Roll, Punk, Alternative, Garage, Surf und Noise schnell eine Menge Genres ins Spiel. Gemeint sind ein druckvoller Sound, trockene Drums, kreischende Gitarren und überdrehter Sprechgesang. Damit hätte man alles beisammen, was dem aufgeschlossen RockFan von Heute gefällt. Die vier Kalifornier Brandon Blaine (Gesang), Jay Rogers (Gitarre), Michael Perez (Bass) und Luke Perine (Drums) waren schon jahrelang befreundet, als sie sich - inspiriert von Iggy Pop, Nick Cave und Black Lips - 2009 dazu entschlossen, Plague Vendor zu gründen. Ihr impulsiver Vollgas-Mix sorgte schnell für Aufsehen. Es folgten Support-Touren und Festival-Auftritte. 2014 erschien mit "Free To Eat" eine energiegeladene, rohe, nur 18-minütige Debüt-EP. Die wurde innerhalb einer Woche geschrieben und live in drei Stunden aufgenommen. Im Anschluss waren Plague Vendor die ganze Zeit auf Tour. Da man sich explizit als Live-Band versteht, war das gewiss keine Strafe. Umso schöner, dass die vier Musiker dennoch Zeit fanden, mit "Bloodsweat" einen Zweitling mit elf neuen Songs einzuspielen. Stücken, die sich zuvor alle live bewährt haben, wie die Kalifornier betonen. Entsprechend kurz fiel die Aufnahmezeit aus, auf Schnickschnack wie Overdubs hat man sowieso verzichtet. Denn: Hier geht's um reine Energie, und das spürt man.

Believe In Me is Duff McKagan's first solo album, released in 1993. The track 'Believe in Me' was also released as a single. At its peak, the album reached #137 on the Billboard 200. The album features such notable guests as Duff's former Guns N' Roses bandmates Slash, Matt Sorum, Dizzy Reed and Gilby Clarke, Skid Row members Sebastian Bach, Rob Affuso and Dave Sabo, Lenny Kravitz and Jeff Beck.

The song, 'You Can't Put Your Arms Around a Memory', from the Guns N' Roses album, 'The Spaghetti Incident', was recorded during the sessions for this album. The song 'Believe in Me' was also released as a music video in 1993.

New Values is the third solo studio album by Iggy Pop and his first record since The Stooges' Fun House and post- Stooges Kill City without any involvement from David Bowie. It was released in 1979.

After hearing the outsider psych of 'Distant Visions' we are suitably hooked and the wheels are in motion to reissue the music of Maya from 1975. It's at this point we realise we ain't even heard the A-side yet! Turns out it's the heaviest heartbreak jam going...' Following on from 2015's acclaimed Critical Mass compilation, Cherrystones and Touch Sensitive come together again to proudly present a lost masterpiece from the U.S. hard rock and psychedelic underground. Fully remastered and faithfully reproduced on limited 7inch vinyl with additional insert featuring lyrics and notes from Burk Skyhorse Price (Maya) and Cherrystones. Two tracks of timeless, heartfelt outsider music. 'In the drying up world of unknown homemade underground rock sounds, there never fails to be at least one scurrying rodent running for cover; bug-eyed under the flashlight of the modern-day sonic adventure seeker. Nearly all the LPs have been brought to the surface.More recently, rabid fuzz and loner sound explorers are rubbing elbows with Northern Soul speed-freaks in the deep, cold, hour-eating world of coverless 45s to seek out what could be seen as the final frontier of no budget, big dream and no fan base homemade local vulnerable Rock 'n' Roll. So what do we have here A UK discovered and repressed Ohio private nuclear soul bomb by Burk Skyhorse Price with his Maya unit from the shadows of Cincinnati Ohio, in the music-world turmoil year of 1975. The single has all the ingredients: songs about heartache, bubbling synths, alien feelings, proto-punk, backwards feedback, isolation. Two lengthy songs of two different moods: 'Synthezoid Heartbreak' a ""Fuck You!' to all partners that want you to join the Real Estate game and turn in your misfired Envelope pedals for a suit and tie; rendered musically in raging underground punk damage mode. But I think the small band of freaks that have heard Maya's lone 45 agree that its the pro-Alien sad dirge of 'Distant Visions' that gets the pen scratching the history books for another legendary entry. This reflective-afternoon delay lurker makes me wonder what happened AFTER the fade out to 'Visions'. Maybe the homemade air siren blew out the studio Regardless, here is a big dreaming band that left quite a brief one-two punch to the face of the industry that had no place for their punk and lonely sound poems. Funny but fitting how they have finally found a home forty years later and many continents away. Solid homemade damage here, touching AND sensitive, albeit crushingly loud.'

Modelbau is one of the many names Frans de Waard (Kapotte Muziek, Goem, Wieman, Freiband, etc) uses for his music. Moving Furniture Records is proud to release the first proper CD by this project after many tape releases and a couple of CD-R's.

Frans de Waard in his own words about Four Squared Wheel: Somewhere in 2012 I had the idea that it was time for that all needed change, having played around with laptops for a decade or so. Actually it was something that was in the air for some time, as I already used cassettes in my work with Kapotte Muziek and in some of my solo concerts. With Modelbau (and yes, that is a deliberate misspelling of the word) I set a few parameters, such as using many cassettes, small synthesizers, little to no laptop and recorded as much 'live' as possible, plus to do only digital releases. Some of that still goes, but the digital releases only went out of the window pretty quickly. In 2012 I played a concert as Modelbau, carefully planned into a fifteen-minute composition and released the first (digital) album. Other work came along and I didn't do much again as Modelbau, until in June 2014 I got various offers for solo concerts and while preparing those, I had a bunch of material recorded, which was released by various labels on cassette (Barreuh Records, Lichtung). During one of these rehearsal/recording sessions I picked up some guitar effect, which was in my way and thought it would be good to use that also in the set-up. Since then the palette seems to be complete; while preparing for concerts I record everything and select pieces from that to be released, with little to no change, save for doing a better beginning or ending when needed. In that respect the almost one hour long 'Four Squared Wheel' is a bit of a different work. It wasn't recorded as part of a rehearsal, but rather in a more elaborate set-up in my studio, using my Philicordia organ, a microphone, guitar amplifier, guitar effects, mixing various signals on the spot into this piece, while retaining that 'live' feeling. It has four distinct parts with considerable gaps of silence in between. They are intended to stay as such. 'Four Squared Wheel' is the most drone based/ambient recording by Modelbau to date, and not something that would be easily re-created in a live situation. As such it is quite a unique work.

This remarkable collection is the cream of such a collaboration, featuring vocalist Phairin Phonphibun and her late-70s and early-80s work with Thai studio legend Surin Paksiri. These 10 songs showcase Phonphibun's mastery of a range of Isan musical styles, always skilled, always singular and always soulful. Her spirit-lifting, authentic molam voice is honored here by the work of the still-active production genius Paksiri, who realizes that as wonderful as a beautiful voice is, when that voice is set, gem-like, in a fitting and inspiring musical environment, the results are timeless. All of these songs were originally released as 7-inch records on Paksiri's own label, in an era before the cassette era devolved, for lesser talents, into a production line of sound-alikes. Every song has a thoughtful, unique arrangement, with a style and sensibility which separates them from other molam and luk thung of every era. In this sense, Paksiri can be ranked along with renowned auteur producers of the Western musical world, with his attention to detail and keen musical sense evident on every track, retaining an undeniable Thai essence while introducing disco, soul and rock elements. A highlight here is the title tune, one of Phomphibun's signature songs, featured in the 1978 film "Mon Rak Menam Mun" and which so impressed Thai show-biz big boss Waiphot Petsuphan that he asked Paksiri to produce his own cover version.
