Der umtriebige Multiinstrumentalist Bill Wells vom National Jazz Trio Of Scotland aus Glasgow hat für die Produktion seines neuen Albums "Nursery Rhymes" eine abenteuerlich breit gefächerte Starbesetzung um sich geschart. Insgesamt 18 Musiker wirkten bei der Einspielung des Albums mit, unter anderem Ira Kaplan und Georgia Hubley von Yo La Tengo, Isobel Campbell, Satomi Matsuzaki und Greg Saunier von Deerhoof
sowie Karen Mantler. Bei dem eingespielten Material handelt es sich gewissermaßen um Spielplatz- und Kindergarten-Klassiker, die im englischen Sprachraum landläufig bekannt sind, beispielsweise "Humpty Dumpty" oder "Three Blind Mice". Doch ähnlich wie bei Wells' "Christmas Album" vergisst man beim Zuhören die Originale recht schnell. Zu seltsam, kryptisch und mitunter auch verstörend wirken die Interpretationen.
Löst man sich gedanklich von den Vorlagen bzw. vom Text, bleiben 15 melodisch-frische Songs, die man irgendwo zwischen Ambient Folk, Indietronic, IDM, experimentellem Pop und Folktronica einordnen kann.

Wer das Vergnügen hat, mit der musikalischen Arbeit von Kristoffer Bolander in Kontakt zu treten, begegnet
einer geradezu himmlischen Stimme. Fast ein Jahrzehnt lang tourte Bolander mit seiner alternativen Folk-
Band Holmes durch halb Europa und begeisterte dabei ein verzücktes Publikum mit poetischen Songs voll
anmutiger Melancholie, nun veröffentlicht der aus Göteborg stammende Sänger sein erstes Soloalbum. "I
Forgive Nothing" erscheint beim Hamburger Label Tapete, und dort passt das sparsam instrumentierte und
konsequent auf den einzelnen Song ausgerichtete Album auch ausgezeichnet hin. Im Mittelpunkt des
Ganzen steht Bolanders dezent an Neil Young erinnernde Stimme, von der auch einige Stücke ausschließlich
leben. Wie der Künstler unterstreicht, war es eine ganz bewusste Entscheidung, nicht alle Songs mit einer
kompletten Band-Formation zu produzieren, um so die grundlegenden Songelemente in den Vordergrund zu
stellen: Text und Gesang. So entstanden zwölf Stücke, die durch eine außergewöhnliche Tiefe und
überwältigende Atmosphäre geprägt sind.

Calypso, kwela, highlife and bebop, a little rock n roll and an Indian mambo, a shango hymn, some Sun Ra-style cha cha cha. A lake in a Johannesburg zoo, a Chinese on the Harrow Road; astronauts and prostitutes, landlords, streetfighters and cricketers.

Almost all of the afro-Cuban music in this compilation fell under the new marketing category 'salsa' (up till then it would have been simply called Latin music), and its cradle was New York City, where the tradition flourished amidst the constant mix of ethnicities and so many styles of music.

It was inevitable that afro-Cuban music would proliferate in new genres reflecting its new home. Afro-Cuban jazz was born in New York City, through the amalgamating creativity of musicians like Chano Pozo, Machito, Duke Ellington and Dizzy Gillespie. Likewise Boogaloo in the mid sixties, coming out of Harlem, joining Guajira and son with soul, R and B and doo-wop.

The recordings on Son Cubano NYC were made over the decade beginning 1972, for the new Salsoul and SAR labels and their sisters Mericana and Guajiro. For the trumpeter Chocolate, the music has 'broader harmonies and touches of jazz phrasing, but never leaves the raices and cinquillo... Cuban music is natural - its essence is its raices [roots]'. For the singer Henry Fiol, 'New York salsa is a hybrid. When Cuban music moved to New York it added another flavour.'

Latin music was exploding in the City. You could hear deejays like Polito Vega playing on the radio at any time of day; you could go dancing any night of the week, throughout the boros, at clubs like Corsos, Casablanca, Bronx Casino, Ochentas, Club Cabrojena, Carlos Ortiz' Tropicana, Hunts Point Palace. And yet — held back because of the unmistakable Cuban personality of its music — 'the success of SAR was due mainly to word of mouth', as co-founder Sergio Bofill recalls. 'We didn't get airplay and found that we could do without it and still sell albums in the USA, Europe, and Africa'. This was still the period of the Cold War — when Eddie Palmieri was accused of 'communist salsa' for his song Mozambique (which isn't even salsa) — and the radio stations did their bit to suppress Cuban culture.
Within a few years — by the mid-80s — New York salsa was becoming stagnant: 'boring and monotonous', in the words of historian Max Salazar; for Charlie Palmieri, 'Europeanized' in its disavowal of improvisation. The music-making on this album was dismissed as old-fashioned. Actually — in the glory of its long, flowing, rootsy forms, in the irresistible spell it casts on dancers everywhere — it is timeless.

'Vibrant and beautiful almost beyond words, the fifty year old recordings being collected on Honest Jons' London Is The Place For Me series are giant and precious treasures of early black British music. Exquisite artistic achievements in their own right, they also throw light on the early development of post bop jazz in the UK.
Volume one in the series, released in '02 and subtitled Trinidadian Calypso In London, 1950-1956, features all-but-forgotten masterpieces of reportage, social commentary and louche wit from Lord Kitchener, Lord Beginner, the Lion, and other recently arrived young calypsonians. This second volume, subtitled Calypso And Kwela, Highlife And Jazz From Young Black London, concentrates on the same period but widens the geo-stylistic net.

'Featured musicians, caught early in their careers and still working within the rich contexts of their native folk musics, include trumpeter Shake Keane from St. Vincent, later a collaborator in Joe Harriott's free jazz explorations, but in '55 on Baionga in exuberant jazz-highlife mode; clarinetist Willie Roachford and trumpeter Harry Beckett, from Barbados, soloists in Ambrose Campbell's jazz-infused West African Rhythm Brothers highlife band; and from South Africa, alto saxophonists Gwigwi Mrwebi and Dudu Pukwana, together with two of Pukwana's Blue Note colleagues, pianist Chris McGregor and trumpeter Mongezi Feza.

'Mrwebi's Nyusamkhaya, which also features Pukwana, is a Fort Knox-certified 24 carat early kwela mothernugget, the man's Africanized Earl Bostic sound fully and gloriously developed. The bass player is Coleridge Goode, from Jamaica, who later played key roles with Harriott and with John Mayer's seminal Indo-Jazz Fusions project. Pukwana, Feza and McGregor add a township-jazz dimension to Nigerian Tunji Oyelana's Omonike.

'Jazz also gets lyric and stylistic look-ins on two early-mutant calypsos: Young Tiger's Calypso Be and King Timothy's Gerrard Street. Tiger ridicules the 'monstrosity' which is bop, but nonetheless includes a stirring bop-informed solo from Jamaican tenor saxophonist Sam Walker. Timothy instead celebrates the music, and London's modest then-answer to 52nd Street, Soho's Gerrard Street (but asks, 'Another thing I don't realise/Why they all have dark glasses on their eyes')

'Straightahead calypso at its finest comes on Kitchener's My Wife's Nightie — where, unembarrassed by his own infidelity, the singer demands of a one-night stand that she 'Come back with mi wife's nightie/Or I charge you for larceny' — and Lion's masquerade-spooky Kalenda March, catching a similar shiver-up-the-spine vibe as Beginner's awesome 'Fed-A-Ray' on volume one.

'Truth is, there are no standout tracks here. It's all wall to wall magic and beauty and loose-limbed dance rhythms. But Campbell's percussion-only Ashiko Rhythm — a mellow hand drums, thumb piano, and gong-gong workout on the basic shave-and-a-haircut/two-bits beat — and the Rhythm Brothers' delicate and lullaby-like closer Sing The Blues can't go by without mention.

Hugo Race, formerly of The Wreckery and the Bad Seeds and now an internationally based solo artist, producer and performer with acts such as Dirtmusic and Sepiatone, delivers intense sonic soundscapes that merge folk, experimentalism, electronica and rock. Originally from the 1980's Melbourne post-punk music scene, Hugo has spent the last thirty years wandering the planet with his music from Buenos Airies to Timboctou. Hugo's various collaborations and bands, spread over several continents, include: Hugo Race Fatalists, in collaboration with Italian soundscape band Sacri Cuori, their new 5 track EP ('Orphans', release date March 7, 2014) Dirtmusic, with American songwriter and producer Chris Eckman. Their fourth album Lion City, recorded in Mali in 2012, was released on Glitterbeat, March 26, 2014. Sepiatone with Italian singer songwriter Marta Collica, their third album Echoes On released by Interbang Records (Italy) in November 2013. Long Distance Operators (LDO), a new project with Belgian artist Catherine Graindorge, premiered at the Botanique, Brussels, May 16th 2014. Album release in 2015 No But Its True, an acoustic album of cover versions recorded in Sicily for Viceversa Records and produced by Italian songwriter and producer Cesare Basile. 'O Bofe' is the title track from the soundtrack to a Brazilian soap opera of
the same name, released on Som Livre in 1972. All music on the soundtrack was
written by brothers Roberto and Erasmo Carlos.

Catchy whistles and MPB vocals over a samba rock groove. Previously unreleased
on 7'.

'Cho Chua' is a capoeira-samba groover by Brasil Ritmo, who we know very little
about... This track is taken from a 1972 Som Livre LP, which is difficult to
find.

Friday 6th November sees global popstar Sam Smith release 'In The Lonely Hour: The Drowning Shadows Edition' - the extended version of his chart topping album containing a second CD of new and exclusive tracks.

The exciting new album features an exclusive new track 'Drowning Shadows', co-written by Smith and Fraser T. Smith and produced by Jimmy Napes and Steve Fitzmaurice. Armando Sciascia - by day, notable composer for Italian erotic and exotic cinema - by night, experimentalist and nocturnal avant-gardener. Lovingly crafted in his hand-built Vedette studio, Sciascia's "lust for experimental research" has never been mre evident than on these precious, never before commercially released 1974 Library recordings.

"Violin Reactions" is a violently unique work, studiously constructed out of multi-tracked strings, ominous VCS3 drones and the drum breaks of Tullio De Piscopo. Part futurist broadcast, part Middle-Eastern short-wave trasmission, anchored by De Piscopo's breakbeats and calisthenic percussion - strangely melodic and at times hauntingly otherworldly.

Two of bassline house's biggest ever anthems finally, finally get a vinyl release.Usually when press releases say long-awaited, it's not justified - this isn't the case with 'Rocky'. It's one of the biggest bassline house tracks ever made, and has been the climax of DJ Q's sets for the best part of a decade. It's been bootlegged, it's been edited and we've never seen it not get a reload, but it's not been given an official release until now. File it alongside T2's 'Heartbroken', Piddy Py's 'Giggle Riddim' and more in the instant bassline classic category.Even better, it's backed with 'Poison', a similarly legendary bassline dub which somehow never came out before. 'Rocky' /' Poison' marks DJ Q's return to Local Action, the label that released his debut album Ineffable and his 2-step anthem 'Brandy & Coke'. He also collaborates with DJ Haus as Trumpet and Badman, and teamed up with Flava D and Royal-T as TDQ for a 12" release on Butterz this year.

Theme to the latest James Bond 007 film- "Spectre". Vinyl (7") version will be released on 6th November. Film has a UK release on 23rd October, and released in the rest of the world on 6th November. CD single and UK film release date coincides with a Graham Norton TV Special, in which Sam will be both chatting on the sofa, with members of the cast, and performing the track.

The third and last twelve inch of the 'Still Living In Slavery Remixes' series. Please remember: The last twelve inch came in a neat sleeve that easily stores all three records in it. The first side contains Kuniyuki Takashi's remix of ' Dounougnan Magni'. He enriches the track with lively percussion and softens the somewhat sparse and minimalistic style of the original. A perfect backing for Hamed Sosso's story about live,death and the pursuit of happiness. The flipside contains the last chapter of the epic 'Enchained Tribe'. A deep glowing track with a haunting vocal and progressing drums that literally break free in the middle. Kuniyuki Takashi's flute provides additional athmosphere and keeps the track moving into a lush (and almost beatless) outro. Next is 'Break Your Chains And Return To Botswana'. Eight and a half minute of slow paced african percussion - and an accompanying chant that fades in and out of the mix.It's all about beats, beats, beats - Mr Raoul K's talent in arrangement and beat programming is very much on display and delivers a real groover without any bassline, Makes you shake your... whatever you want to shake. Enjoy.

Arguably the most important figure in Turkish rock and psychedelia, Erkin Koray's 4th album Tutkusu was originally released in 1977 and has become one of the most sought after pieces of Turkish progressive psych-rock. Fetching big sums online the LP has been out of print for years. Sagara is delighted to repress it on vinyl to satisfy the demands of Turkish psych collectors everywhere with an essential piece from the legend himself.

Floating Points and James Holden link with Maâlem Mahmoud Guinia, regarded as a maâlem (master) of the traditional North-West African sound.

In March 2014, James Holden and Floating Points were invited to the Fellah Hotel, nestled at the foot of the Atlas Mountains just outside Marrakech, to participate in a week-long residency collaborating with the legendary Maalem (Master) Mahmoud Guinia from Morocco's Gnawa musical tradition. The four tracks you see before you are the product of Holden and Floating Points' makeshift open-air recording sessions by the hotel pool with the Maalem Mahmoud Guinia and his band, featuring the Maalem on his three-stringed guembri instrument and lead vocals and accompanied by the trio of Guinia's brother-in-law and two sons who provide the vocal chorus response and complex krakeb and clapping percussive rhythm cycles that characterise the Gnawa tradition.

Floating Points' 'Mimoun Marhaba' began life as a series of prepared Flo'Po loops which the Maalem was invited to jam over via an in-ear monitor, prompting the Guinia group's rendition of the 'Marhaba' ("Welcome") Gnawa theme. Mixed back home in Sam's London studio, the poolside singing and clapping recordings were reintegrated with Sam's virtuosic keyboard performances and reassembled into one trippy, hypnotic, groovy whole - by far the most club-friendly cut here.

Holden's attempts to meld his music with the Gnawa sound meanwhile saw him quickly ditch his home-prepared efforts and swiftly repatch his modular synth to enable him to improvise alongside the Guinia contingent's traditional repertoire, with Sam standing in as recording engineer to capture the one-off collaborative performances in a series of live takes. Holden & Guinia's alternative take on the Gnawa standard 'Marhaba' was the very first sketch to emerge, featuring Holden's own attempt at emulating the distinctive Gnawa beat for the Guinia crew to play along with via a homemade drum machine patch on his modular synth.

Their second improvisational experiment - and perhaps the most successful of the three - 'Bania' is a magical coming together of two parallel musical evolutions, where Holden's soaring modular solo drifts in and out, over and under the vocal call-andresponse, plucked guembri and relentless krakeb rhythm of the Gnawa traditional. At one point, the metallic clatter of the krakebs naturally falls away to expose the deliciously nuanced in-the-moment interplay between Holden's undulating synth line and the Guinia-led anthemic vocal refrains, forming a breakdown which is pure trance in every sense of the word, though orchestrated entirely at the behest of the 63 year old Maalem.

With the collective sense that in 'Bania' they had managed to nail down something rather special, the third and final Holden & Guinia experiment took place under much more relaxed circumstances. Thus a laidback delivery of 'Tora Tora Torko Lila' features the subtle yet shrill intervention of a Holden-tweaked modular synth following the decidedly Gnawa-tinged percussive input tapped out by Guinia's philosophy student son Hamza on the trigger pads of Holden's midi controller, in a thoroughly modern moment of cultural exchange.

The product of a single days outdoor recording session on a makeshift poolside setup, communicating entirely through a translator, their success in melding together these two disparate musical traditions in such a seamless fashion is surely a remarkable achievement. "It's because we're all playing together and are open to each other's ideas that it actually worked," Floating Points told Red Bull Music Academy's Kat Leinhart, who accompanied the producers throughout the course of their Moroccan trip (as documented in her illuminating article 'The Hal of Gnawa').

"Whether sonically it's like mixing lime and milk is a different matter, but the fact that we're happy to make music together is an edifying thing."

"Mutante" is an experimental project formed in 2011 by Valentina Grande (voice), Aldo Natali (producer and guitarist), with the collaboration of Alessio Borgia (drums) and Federico Pecoraro (bass). The name was chosen to emphasize the essence, everything that resides in the concept of constant transformation and rebirth. The duo public in 2013 the first single "In gift", published by "Musicultura", with a video made by Fabio Perrone. In March of 2014 released their second single "Moment" (presented in New York at "Dacia Gallery", thanks to the collaboration of "Arts & Art Gallery"), the song focuses guidelines inspiring representing the theme of the first album. Mutant rock, electronica, jazz elegance, all in a key electro pop. The project, already in its infancy, has received critical acclaim during live performances, such as the award "Musicultura" (semi-finalists in 2012 with the song "carnality '', finalists in 2013 with the song" IN GIFT ") The Heineken Jammin 'Festival Contest Rock & TV 2012 (finalists, with the eponymous song "Mutant") and Arezzo Wave 2015 (finalists). In 2015, they began working the first disc with producer Paolo Del Vitto at the studios of the Laboratories of Musical Lecce.

Pantelis Thalassinos ; the angelic voice Fadia Bazzi originally from Lebanon; Apo & the Apostles feat Mai Mourad, the alternative folk rock with a multilingual twist and upbeat vibe; Jordanian Arabic Rock band Jadal; Iranian R&B and Hip-Hop voice Sogand; PrOmid, international music producer of Iranian origin whose music is a composition of native and eastern musical instruments with western musical atmosphere; Moroccan musician Mouhi Eddine Marsli; producer TH Moy from the Spanish city of Girona; Armenian violin virtuoso Tigran Petrosyan, Daniil Nil Kizilov better known as DJ Nil and Alfida the vocal diva, producer and DJ from Uzbekistan are some of the names who contribute to the distinctive multi cultural distinctive feature of the album.

In Anton Chekhov's last play The Cherry Orchard, written just a few years before these Gramophone Company recordings in Odessa (mostly), the character Gayev hears off-stage 'our famous Jewish orchestra... four violins, a flute and a double bass.' In this period, klezmer music was venturing beyond its original role as Jewish wedding and celebratory music. It was proliferating in secular settings; sometimes disreputable, even underground. In the Odessa Stories, Isaac Babel mentions a bar with a house-band of 'old Jews with dirty beards playing Romanian and Jewish tunes'; and klezmer would have been the soundtrack of the local brothels, pretty much all Jewish-owned. (One track here celebrates a new treatment for syphilis, Preparation 606... even lavishing a trumpet on proceedings.) Tangy, precious, exuberant, life-affirming music, high and low, mostly for dancing, featuring virtuosi like violinist Jascha Gegner and clarinettist Titunshnayder, presented with excellent notes.

The 3CD Soundtracks And Singles 1963-1966 compiles the original soundtrack albums for Zulu and Four In The Morning, both composed and conducted by John Barry, together with other recordings he made for the Ember label. Barry (1933-2011) was one of the best known composers of film music in the world. His early career found him working as in-house arranger for EMI, leader of hit instrumental combo the John Barry Seven, and composer, arranger and conductor on the first UK soundtrack album (the Adam Faith vehicle Beat Girl). After Barry's involvement as arranger on the first James Bond film Dr No in 1962, he was appointed as primary composer for the film franchise.
The BAFTA-nominated Zulu (1964) was directed by Cy Endfield with a cast including Stanley Baker, Michael Caine and Jack Hawkins. The film depicts the heroic defence of Rorke's Drift mission station during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879. Originally released in 1964, and here mastered from original stereo tapes, the album comprises soundtrack music (with two of the tracks incorporating narration by Richard Burton), followed by A Selection of Zulu Stamps', essentially southern African-influenced beat instrumentals, performed by the John Barry Seven.
Anthony Simmons' Four In The Morning (1965) won the Golden Sail award for best feature film at the Locarno International Film Festival, and earned Judi Dench a BAFTA award for Most Promising Newcomer of 1966. Originally released on Ember, the soundtrack album comprises John Barry's original haunting score, plus four excerpts of dialogue featuring Dench, Ann Lynn, Norman Rodway, Brian Phelan and Joe Melia. The dialogue only exists in mono, so we have presented the entire album in mono, followed by the music-only tracks in stereo, again mastered from original tapes.
Both soundtrack albums were originally released on British independent label Ember, where John Barry was associate producer and head of A&R in the early sixties. A third disc spotlights other John Barry recordings for the label. These include two UK hit singles: the From Russia With Love theme (here also in an alternative version with organ) and the Barry-produced Christine', a satirical commentary on the Profumo affair, credited to the mysterious Miss X, as well as Fancy Dance', which served as the theme to the BBC's twice-weekly soap The Newcomers from 1965 to 1967.
John Barry went on to score many notable soundtracks, including the award-winning Born Free, The Lion In Winter, Midnight Cowboy, The Cotton Club, Out Of Africa and Dances With Wolves. In 1999 Barry was appointed OBE for services to music,and in 2002 he received the GoldenEye award, courtesy of the Ian Fleming Foundation.

This limited edition 7´´ features Chan Chan, arguably the most popular track recorded by the phenomenon
that was the Buena Vista Social Club. Released for the first time on 7´´ Chan Chan became the
soundtrack to the late 90's and was largely responsible for introducing the World to Cuban music. The
album going on to sell 9 million copies. On the B Side is Macusa, a track recorded at the same time, by
the same artists, but never released until it appeared on the new Buena Vista record Lost and Found.

The night came and with it, Aguardiente and smoke. We listened to salsa records and played along on the MPC. Wilson the dog saw us working, dancing and singing. A little more than a month went by. We were joined by a piano player, some singers, a percussionist, and recorded day and night, with more Aguardiente. We recorded, with delay and distortion, adding layers of melodies and rhythm. We call it RIONEGRO, like the place where it was created, like the river that flows down and crosses Medellín on its way to the ocean'

In January 2013 Sebastián Sano' Hoyos, Gregorio Gladkazuka' Gomez, Natalia Valencia, and Matias Aguayo set out to gather at Rionegro, a town on the outskirts of Medellín, Colombia. Others, like Byron Idárraga, Natalia Lara, Luis Miguel Jaramillo, and more, would join the sessions. In this project, a musical spirit was followed, initiated by Sano's inspiration in playing the rhythms of Salsa, Descarga, Boogaloo, Merengue, and so on, using the machines of today.

Together, all were conscious about the aim not to make a fusion of styles but rather an authentic delivery of their love for music, and something to which you could dance the same steps as the great Salsa classics.

They performed these grooves in a house by the mountains, and everything was about the love for the music they grew up with and about playing it today with their own means. Recordings were made during long lasting, late night jams, in-and-around the house (that's why you can sometimes hear barking dogs and other background noises on the record).

Gladkazuka worked drum machines and sequencers, recorded, and played his distinct minimalist electric guitar riffs of dark Latin psychedelia, reminding us of moments when Beat and Rock'n Roll embraced Cumbia.

Sano is a Salsa lover, a salsa dancer, as well as a House and Salsa DJ. Being a lover of Nuyorican takes on House music- where rhythms stand as close to tropical music as they do to disco and funk. He continues in this vein by translating those hard rhythms of the past, reinventing the dirty distorted Salsa - cowbells, the conga cascades of the energetic Descargas', and the aggressive trombones hearable on old vinyl.
