Pop Makossa - The Invasive Dance Beat Of Cameroon 1976-1984 LP (2x12")

Repress!

Just when you think that the well of obscure music from around the world has run dry, Analog Africa returns to put the record straight. Pop-Makossa shines a light on a glorious but largely overlooked period in the story of Cameroonian makossa, when local musicians began to replace funk and highlife influences with the rubbery bass of classic disco and the sparkling synth flourishes and drum machines of electrofunk. The resultant compilation, which apparently took eight years to produce, is packed full of brilliant cuts, from the heavily-electronic jauntiness of Pasteur Lappe's "Sanaga Calypso" and horn-totin' Highlife-disco of Emmaniel Kahe and Jeanette Kemogne's "Ye Medjuie", to the dense, organ-laden wig out that is Clement Djimogne's "Africa".

Siti Muharam - Ashikibaya ft. Tamar Collocutor

On The Corner provide the first taste of a landmark recording that the label embarked upon two years ago on the East African island archipelago of Zanzibar.

Pete On the Corner was consulting for the ambitious permaculture development of Fumba Town. The story of Siti Binti Saad, the mother of Taarab is rooted in Fumba. Pete joined the dots to shine new light on the pioneering life of Siti Binti Saad as the innovative town development took shape and looked to connect with the Island's unique history at the centre of the Swahili world.

Whilst steering a recording project that would celebrate Siti Binti Saad's legacy, Pete brought in producer Sam Jones and the pair met with filmmaker Andy Jones (who documented the life and work of the legendary Bi Kidude) who revealed that Siti Binti Saad had a great grand-daughter, Siti Muharam who led a very private life but had a 'golden voice'. With music director Matona on board the scene was set to go beyond celebrating the singular legacy of a Swahili pioneer and find a new hero.

Siti Muharam has a golden timbre and on this 7" we get the first taste of her debut LP that will represent her great grandmother's legacy for the next generations.

Tony Allen & Hugh Masekela - Rejoice

‘Rejoice’ is a very special collaboration between Tony Allen, the legendary drummer and co-founder of Afrobeat, and Hugh Masekela, the master trumpet player of South African jazz.

Having first met in the 70's thanks to their respective close associations with Fela Kuti, the two world-renowned musicians talked for decades about making an album together. When, in 2010, their touring schedules coincided in the UK, the moment presented itself and producer Nick Gold took the opportunity to record their encounter. The unfinished sessions, consisting of all original compositions by the pair, lay in archive until after Masekela passed away in 2018.

With renewed resolution, Tony Allen and Nick Gold, with the blessing and participation of Hugh Masekela’s estate, unearthed the original tapes and finished recording the album in summer 2019 at the same London studio where the original sessions had taken place.

‘Rejoice’ can be seen as the long overdue confluence of two mighty African musical rivers – a union of two free-flowing souls for whom borders, whether physical or stylistic, are things to pass through or ignore completely. According to Allen, the album deals in “a kind of South African-Nigerian swing-jazz stew”, with it's roots firmly in Afrobeat.

Allen and Masekela are accompanied on the record by a new generation of well-respected jazz musicians including Tom Herbert (Acoustic Ladyland/The Invisible), Joe Armon-Jones (Ezra Collective), Mutale Chashi (Kokoroko) and Steve Williamson.

ALEX FIGUEIRA & MACHADO - QUANDO SERÁ

Alex Figueira, the man behind Music With Soul, Fumaça Preta & Conjunto Papa Upa, has teamed up with Maxado, Brazil's leading rocksteady vocalist, to create another impossible crossover, connecting the dots of the vast tropical music map that have remained appart for far too long.

What if the now-legendary producer Lee Perry had recorded & produced the nascent Wailers trio of Neville Livingston, Bob Marley and Peter Tosh, not in Kingston, the scorching hot Jamaican capital, but instead in Belém, an even hotter city, at the heart of the Brazilian Amazon.

Whilst Kingston's airwaves and street parties were dominated by the locally produced rocksteady, ska and reggae, Belém was dancing to it's own beat of carimbó and siriá.

Alex Figueira and Maxado, two avid fans of both musical traditions, entered the Barracão Sound Studio, Amsterdam's famed vintage recording studio, determined to find an answer to that hypothetical question. The result is not only tangible and unprecedented, but incredibly emotive & hypnotic too.

The chorus of "Quando Será" is unnervingly apt for our times tool, "Quando será que eu vou te ver?", or "When will I see you?" the song asks. Well until we see each other, Music With Soul offers some musical relief in the form of this collaborative song.

The B side offers a beautiful touching instrumental version, led by the impeccable flute rendition of Brazilian multi-instrumentalist Gabriel Milliet, a prominent member of the Brazilian music scene in Amsterdam and Alex's long time collaborator having shared the stage countless times in the past 3 years. His delicate phrasing will give you goosebumps.

Alex Figueira is well known as the man behind experimental tropical rock-outfit, Fumaça Preta, and more recently the psychedelic tropical dance band, Conjunto Papa Upa. Meanwhile, he has become a staple of the Amsterdam scene, having either played with, recorded or produced everyone from Mauskovic Dance Band to Altin Gün. São Paulo-based musician & singer composer Maxado made his mark fronting Firebug, Brazil's leading, if not only, rocksteady band, also featuring influential musician, producer and mix engineer Victor Rice. The two musicians met during Alex's first trip to Brazil, when he was already a massive Firebug fan, and quickly formed a firm friendship. Finally over the course of Maxado's first visit to Amsterdam, the pair had a crack at writing & recording together, quickly discovering that their chemistry extended to the studio. Now you can hear the first fruits of their blossoming musical relationship.

Andras - Joyful

Andras

Joyful

12inchBIS41
Beats In Space
04.02.2020

Andras’Joyful is a cornucopic vision rooted in the decay of dance music from one of Australia’s most distinct yet understated voices. Cutting a path through an overgrowth of nostalgia around 70's acid folk and 90's acid house, Joyful is an invitation to till a n old garden in a glistening new light.

A thirteen year old Andrew Wilson sits in the back of his parents’ sedan, driving down the coast from Melbourne. Headphones covering his awkwardly aged ears and connected to a jam-packed mp3 player, he experiences an intense synchronicity when the car careens over a mountain crest in the Otway Ranges right as the track in his ears peaks. A momentary vision of a “first rave rush,” in which Australia’s lauded party history dances tellingly with this dreamer’s destiny.

Not so much later but perhaps more worldly and certainly more aware, Wilson returns home from touring, now a “veteran” of the dance world, to realize a different synchronicity in his record collection. Finding Ian Van Dahl nestled next to John Fahey, William Orbit spine-to-spine with Shira Small, the harmony between folk music of the early 70's and dance music from the 90s becomes perfectly audible in unimaginable ways.

Through an afterglow from both summers of love seeped in shared sonic soil, on Joyful, Wilson cultivates melodic drama and tenderness, memorable hooks and rapturous arpeggios; sentimental strings summon both joyful aspirations and the shadows of faded dreams. Using folk songs as fodder—lyrics, samples, note progressions—each entry of Wilson’s debut album under his Andras moniker is a return to a different springtime of the mind.

Many artists working in Australia can relate to the feeling of “not quite being there,” as Wilson describes it. Always a couple years behind trend. Turning up at the party as it’s winding down. Fearing that in many ways the culture is looking backwards, confirming the narrow outlook of a parochialism that many have worked tirelessly to disprove. Using this disconnect as an invitation to dream another dream, Joyful becomes the soundtrack of early teen Andrew’s fantasy of Utopic parties past, specifically the late discovery of a bygone warehouse rave scene, as well as a return to a guileless chapter of personal history as heard through plain, sane, and simple folk melodies. Joyful is a homecoming, a testament to the evolving euphoria of a flower garden rooted in earth’s tender rot, of birds and bees flying free but not without a changing landscape in sight.

Andras’Joyful is available on LP and digital formats on January 31, 2020 via Beats In Space. On behalf of Andras, a portion of proceeds from this release will benefit the Invasive Species Council on the recommendation of Tim Low, author of the book Feral Future and Where Song Began.

Mamazu - NEW LIGHT REMIX EP (inc. Nicora Cruz / Rafael Aragon Remix)

New Light Remix EP’ presents two remixed tracks by Nicola Cruz and Rafael Aragon from Mamazu’s latest release via his label Hole and Holland. The remixes serve to create a psychedelic, folkloric sonic journey into the borderless realms of contemporary lectronic music, transcending musical boundaries and exploring elements of mystique and ritual. This side’s ‘AloMlo’ remixed by Rafael Aragon, provides a stripped back journey that clicks, chimes and chants its way towards a progressive melody delivering a blissful head down and eyes closed finale. Nicola Cruz’s remix of ‘Dada’ on That side offers an expressive modular synthesized, psychedelic and percussive exploration into rhythm and sound.

Kim Jinmuk - Indo-Coreana

-Indo-Coreana, unearthed Korean-Indo Ethno Fusion project-

Better known for his work as a critic, Kim Jinmuk has introduced some of the deepest Contemporary and World music in Korea through his own label and series of Meditative works offering crossovers of Ethnic sonorities.

His personal body of work also covers a wide spectrum as he kept searching for creative ways to express himself, that’s when in early 90s he first started to show interest in Indian traditional music bringing him to cross over frontiers with the Gayageum & Ajeng legend Baik In-Young and the Gayageum player Lee Min Young to meet talented Indian Traditional instruments musicians from Prune and organise collaborative sessions giving a yet unheard deep fusion of sounds.

Directing the sessions and taking care of the compositions Kim Jinmuk found a cross-cultural sweet spot given birth to no-less than 3 full length albums.

In most realisation there is a profound sense of both meditative atmospheres and rhythmical elements with a rarely found balance in between these. When most Ethnic and traditional oriented pieces have a tendency to stick into their own standards “Indo-Coreana” is rather highlighting the artistry of this cross-cultural fusion.

Various - Mega Wave Orchestra

Libreville Records is proud to present a focus on legendary electronic swiss project Mega Wave Orchestra in the form of a compilation LP including unreleased material.Originally released privately in Geneva in 1988 as a box set containing five LPs by The Mega Wave Orchestra and five prints by the artist H. Richard Reimann. The Mega Wave Orchestra, the brain-child of musician, mathematician and composer Christian Oestreicher, was conceived as an multi-media electronic music big-band. It was comprised of seven multi-instrumentalists Christine Schaller, Vincent Barras, Jacques Demierre, Olivier Rogg, Rainer Boesch, Roger Baudet, and Benoit Corboz, with Oestreicher as arranger and producer. The Mega Wave Orchestra created a new hybrid music. It was a music with roots in the jazz and classical traditions, but one which also drew on the sonic freedom of musique concrete and the kind of total experience offered by psychedelia. The diverse backgrounds and specialisms of each of the band leaders/writers resulted in a wide variety of music across the five discs: from austere drones and granular aural detail to warm oddball fusion and gorgeous but cracked vocal jazz. There are useful contemporary comparisons to be made: zoned synth jazz like the Azimuth LP on ECM or Karin Krog’s Freestyle; Larry Heard’s sequencer dreamtime; the Valium minimalism of Pep Llopis or Jun Fukamaki; Dexter Wansel’s shimmering arrangements for Loose Ends, or even the FM sheen meets cold war threat of Donald Fagen’s Night Fly. Here, too, is the sound of music technology about to snowball and define its own aesthetic, unknowingly prefiguring auteurish bedroom producers like Black Dog or The Detroit Escalator Company.Lovely crafted tip-on sleeve. Remastered from Master tapes. 600 copies.

Bossa 70 - Si Voce Pensa | Birimbao

Matasuna Records is thrilled to reissue another musical jewel from Peru on vinyl for the first time. The songs were recorded by the band Bossa 70 and released on a 7inch EP and the self-titled album in 1970. Both are much sought-after collector's items and impossible to find. The songs were transferred from the original master tapes and got a new mastering.

Nilo Espinoza Vascones or better known under his artist name Nilo Espinosa is without doubt a Peruvian saxophone and flute legend. After a classical musical education he entered the music scene in the early 1960s. In 1966 he founded the band Los Hilton's with some of the best Peruvian musicians including the gifted piano player Otto de Rojas. In 1967 they recorded the first and only LP of the group, which was released in a small edition in Peru.

Their concerts were more and more influenced by Jazz and Bossa Nova, so in 1968 they changed the band's name to Bossa 70. In the record label's office Nilo met the Afro-Peruvian Carmen Rosa Basurco, who also loved Bossa Nova and could sing in Portuguese and English. From then on she was the main singer of the band.

Bossa 70 recorded four songs for a 7-inch EP in an edition of only 100 copies, which was given away for promotional purposes at concerts and to friends & family. In 1970 they recorded their self-titled LP which reflected a mixture of Bossa Nova, Latin Jazz and Funk. The label pressed only 300 copies, which were sold out very quickly. This LP was the band's only album and is a rare piece of Peruvian music history.

Si Voce Pensa on the A-side is a great cover version of the same named song by famous Brazilian musician Roberto Carlos from 1968. Bossa 70 adapted the song for the dancefloor, which is driven by an uplifting rhythm and the expressive voice of the singer. Of course, the great interplay of the other musicians must not go unmentioned. A fantastic track that will heat up everywhere!

Birimbao on the flipside is another fantastic Brazilian cover version. The song was written in the 1960s by Baden Powell, one of the most important Brazilian guitarists and one of the pioneers of Bossa Nova. Bossa 70 set their own stamp with a new instrumentation with brass, wah wah guitars, piano, flute parts and trumpet solos. The percussion section is also a brilliant backup for this one. Another winner!

Dream Division - Escape from Planet Sauvage

Polytechnic Youth label mainstays Dream Division return to the fray with an ace double A side 45. Escape from Planet Sauvage and the krauty Zarek are two wonderful slabs of icy Carpenter-esque, electronica.

DD main man Tom McDowell says of the single: “I wanted to explore the sounds of sci-fi disco and cosmic krautrock, drawing influence from my love of the french electronic sound, with groups like Air, Daft punk, Justice, to name a few. Creating an energy usually found in the works of Giorgio Moroder, whilst keeping some of the Dream Division sinister undertones.” One may also pick out elements of previous French electronic gods, Richard Pinhas / Heldon, and the Video Liszt stuff lurking within these grooves….

Tidiane Thiam - Siftorde

Sahel sounds
22.05.2020

"SS060LP" Vinyl, dreamy Instrumental Acoustic, -folk guitar from Fouta Toro in Northern Senegal. Fingerpicked Acoustic Guitar with intricate syncopation, a technique inspired by the four-string hoddu, with melodies that go back centuries, from the Almoravid dynasty to the Mali Empire.

In Contrast to the familiar desert blues, Siftorde highlights a very distinct and underrepresented style of Sahelian guitar. Guitarist, photographer, visual artist and folklorist Tidiane Thiam hails from Podor, a small riverside town in the far North of Senegal. A self-taught musician who learned guitar from late-night radio broadcasts, Tidiane is a veritable encyclopedia of Sahel folklore.

Borrowing from this repertoire, he adapts his own technique of fingerstyle guitar, crafting serene pieces imbued with emotive reflection. Recorded at night on a single microphone at home in Podor, and set against the backdrop of crickets, the recordings on Siftorde are stripped down and informal, without any pretense of a studio recording.

The effect is deeply personal and intimate. The album's title, translated by Tidiane in four languages, means 'Remember' - a nostalgic ode to the temporality of the recording, and a plea for the songs themselves, whose survival demands they not be forgotten.

PLANETS

17.12.2019

Two years after an acclaimed first album, Al Sunny and Favorite Recordings proudly present Planets, carrying on their collaboration and bringing it to another level.

Al Sunny is a young and talented singer/musician/composer emerging from the French soul music scene. During his conservatory studies, he refined his knowledge and confirmed his desire to write and compose. He quickly matured the music that he truly loves, inspired by artists such as Tim Maia, America, Al Green, and Al Jarreau. Giving birth to the majority of his compositions through his guitar, he always seeks to bring his songs’ melody to the forefront. During his studies he kept experiencing live performing on different scenes and confirmed his choice for a musical career, while also meeting many brilliant musicians, including Florian Pellissier, who later introduced him to Pascal Rioux and Favorite Recordings.

It resulted in 2017 in Time to Decide release, a dazzling first album establishing Al Sunny’s music and writing style, looking towards the 70s and 80s Westcoast movement, infused with Blue-Eyed-Soul, Pop and Folk flavors. Built on the same influences, Planets is made of 8 new compositions (including a CD and digital bonus), and is clearly a continuation of its cadet, asserting Al Sunny’s talent and singing skills.

Fully recorded live and analogic in Paris, this new album also stands out by an impressive level of production, faithful to some classics of the genre. Mixing catchy melodies, soulful vocals, warm and heavy bass, strong beat and beautiful guitars and keyboards harmonies, Planets just perfectly meets the AOR and Modern-Soul golden era standards.

Pantha Du Prince - Conference Of Trees

Hendrik Weber aka Pantha Du Prince (‘a fantasy character...a poetic transporter for the concept behind the music’) has carved a niche for a style of techno he calls, ‘layered and cinematographic.’ He released the Diamond Daze (2004) and This Bliss (2007) albums on Berlin dance label Dial before signing to Rough Trade and widening his audience with Black Noise (2010) and The Element of Light (2013).

On “Conference of Trees”, Pantha Du Prince explores the communication of trees and creates a sound concept based on it. What we experience here is a break through recording of experimental music, visual poetry, club culture and speculative science.

BECHAN & ALEX FIGUEIRA - MOERARIE MOREI ATJARA

Music With Soul returns with another genre-defying instant classic, expanding the limits of the Tropical Dance music universe.

Staying true to the label's essence, founder Alex Figueira places a high bet with this new release, introducing a brand new breed of traditional “Hindoestan” (Indian diaspora in Surinam) music and Cumbia. Taking the music of underground Surinam musician and empresario A. Bechan for an explorative excursion into the depths of the Colombian caribbean coast, this explosive combination raises the bar unquestionably. Equally weird, groovy and trippy, this 45 will turn any party upside down, regardless of any factors. The only problem you will encounter is what to play after. The solution is right on the other side. Just flip the record and give them the Instrumental version, featuring electric guitar, an alternative percussion set up and the beloved classic Juno-60 synthesizer in the leading role for another 4 minutes of dancefloor catharsis.

Etuk Ubong - Africa Today LP

Hailed by none other than Seun Kuti as "one of the best things to come out of Lagos", Nigerian trumpeter, composer and bandleader Etuk Ubong has developed an original style he calls "Earth Music". Weaving together a unique combination of not only afrobeat, highlife and jazz, but also the ritualistic drumming of Ekombi, the result is urgent and highly energetic, yet spiritual; his compositions reflecting his heritage and life philosophy of goodwill, peace and love for humanity. Ubong's music is so vibrant and propulsive that one can easily make comparisons with leading lights of the UK scene, such as the Shabaka Hutchings-led Sons of Kemet, but at the same time it is distinctly Nigerian.

Polytechnic Youth
28.02.2020

"The second of January’s new Polytechnic Youth releases is a 6 trk 7” EP of lo-fi, 4-track home recordings of minimal synth | primitive drum machine goodness. With heavy leanings towards PY’s favourite era of killer small run, often private press experimental electronic releases, dressed in hand assembled, very DIY packaging. This one not only sounds the part but looks it too.

Debuting here, e+ is the performing name for this enigmatic Ontario, Canada based solo electronic project. 6 dark pieces of exploratory electronica, delivered in the kind of lo-fi tape hiss you’d find those early Flying Saucer Attack drenched in, this in a way is the electronic equivalent; nice n murky and lo-fi, and the sleeve it’s delivered in also harks back to those glorious post punk, DIY days- a hand stapled, numbered pressing of 250 in flipover style sleeves just like the old days…. Lovely record, and quite reaffirming in a way, that you still see 7”’s like this…."

Various - AJX500: A Collection From Acid Jazz

‘AJX500’ celebrates a milestone in Acid Jazz’s catalogue and at the same time harks back to the earlier label collections released in the ‘Totally Wired’ series. This is carried through in both the choice of material - a mix of eight new tracks and one obscure oldie - and the glorious packaging with a sleeve designed by longtime label collaborators The Unknown and printed on a US style Tip On sleeve. The music is what makes this package, nine tracks never before released on vinyl showcasing Acid Jazz 2019 and what the future holds in 2020. There is an exclusive new track by Matt Berry which previews the direction for his long awaited follow up to his Top 40 album ‘TV Themes’. There are exclusive to vinyl remixes of the Brand New Heavies by FOUK, Laville by the Disco Freaks and Corduroy by their drummer Ben Addison. The album opens with two blistering debut releases: the afro-funky psychedelic bootyshake of ‘Theme’ by Lightning Orchestra and newly christened Soul Revivers with their Ethiopiques-meets-Kingston groove on ‘Harder’ which features 87 year old reggae legend Ernest Ranglin’s shimmering guitar hooks. Argentinian mega-producer Kevin Fingier takes time out of the Aggrotones to launch his soul / jazz Project and label friends at Unique in Germany lend the cosmic garage of Suzan Kötcher. The oldies are courtesy of UK producer Graham Dee and the Orchestre Picoby Band D’Abomey’s ‘Dahomy’, the latter with a 1970s funky stew from Benin previously only available on a rare 7” from the Albarika Stores label from Benin. Dee’s Sampaguita is a take on a song that the UKbased producer wrote for a Moacir Santos Blue Note album and is being released for the first time.

30.01.2019

Official, remastered reissue of this disco tinged, afro funk treasure and the first time the 'Karam Bani' single has been cut to 12' - maximising every ounce of highlife soul from Sidiku Buari's productions.

That undeniable US funk flavour coupled with Buari's Ghanaian rhythms bring a zest to these grooves even the tangiest of forbidden fruits couldn't draw out. Those fuzzed keys and dusty highlife guitar licks sprinkle the West African flavour, whilst drumming demi-god Bernard Purdie provides the wizardry behind the infectious, yet precision like beats that make the track so unique. Purdie's killer breaks combined with Buari's jubilant vocals give a spirituality to this cut that'll liven up any dancefloor - alongside being a gold mine for samples.

Flip it over and you're hit with the joy filled jam, 'Ye Koaba'. Tribal drums lead the way for a chorus of jubilant chants supplemented by glistening synth sounds and funk fuelled guitar riffs. It's a feel-good slice of Ghanaian sunshine, capturing that community spirit and good-hearted nature Ghana's famous for.

Two afro funk sensations sure to put a smile on your face, even when the skies are grey and you're 5000 miles away from the glorious West African coastline.

CHAINO - JUNGLE ECHOES LP

The African American bongo player known as Chaino released a series of sublime exotica albums during the 1950's, based around themes of “savage Africa,” supposed tribal mating rituals, voodoo practices and other concepts of exotica excess. Born Leon Johnson in Philadelphia in 1929, he was raised on the south side of Chicago and began making a name for himself as a bongo player on the Chitlin Circuit of nightclubs catering to a black clientele.

In 1957, he was discovered by the nightclub singer and producer Kirby Allan (AKA Sidney Allen Pitmann), who travelled extensively in African earlier in the decade and who was seeking someone that could emulate the ceremonial rhythms he encountered in Kenya and the Gold Coast. In a peculiar marketing strategy, Allan recast Johnson as Chaino, “an orphan from a lost tribe in Africa who was taken in by missionaries and brought to the US.”

Together they produced eight albums, typically with Johnson playing every instrument himself, with added shouts, whelps and pseudo African language. Jungle Echoes, first issued in 1959 on the Hollywood-based Omega Disc, is a thoroughly mesmerising example of Chaino’s over-the-top brilliance.

As a label guided by the mission of sharing the lesser heard sounds of Brazil with the world, Far Out Recordings are delighted to present the first official vinyl reissue of Edu Passeto & Gui Tavares' Noite Que Brincou De Lua: a super rare and largely unheard masterwork of MPB, originally released in 1981. Disciples of the Clube Da Esquina movement, pioneered by Milton Nascimento and Lô Borges, Edu & Gui mixed psychedelic folk, jazz, bossa, and rock for an album of soulful, dreamy Brazilian pop, with stunning arrangements and lush vocal harmonies. Having first met performing on the music festival circuits of São Paulo and Minas Gerais, it wasn't long before Edu and Gui struck up a thriving song writing partnership and close friendship, united not only by the love of music, but by shared ideals of liberation and greater equality for humankind. The duo's motivation stemmed from a desire for social and political change, during what turned out to be the final years of the Brazilian military dictatorship. Prior to recording, Edu and Gui had to tread carefully with their lyrics, which had to be submitted to the federal censorship authorities before release. Their first application was rejected after the lyrics were deemed to contain too much direct social criticism. 'Profome' (translated 'Pro-hunger'), a song characteristically bittersweet in tone, was initially a matter of fact portrayal of the desperately poor social conditions many people in Brazil faced at the time. Back to the drawing board, Edu and Gui, like many persecuted artists from this era had to refine their lyrics to convey their message more subtly. It took the best part of a year to complete the album, with Edu and Gui saving every scent they could spare from gigging and hitchhiking the 100km to each session from their home in Campinas, so that they'd have enough money to pay for studio time in Abertura Studios, São Paulo. Although the album gained a respectable amount of radio play in the years that followed, it's remained in relative obscurity, despite its spellbinding qualities, evident on tracks like 'Sabiá na Palmeira', a sweet Brazilian rare-groove with shades of Leroy Hutson, and the psych-folk tinged 'Seguir', which harks to the dreamiest moments of Milton Nascimento and Marcos Valle.
Edu and Gui called time on their musical partnership in 1986 when Gui moved to Rio De Janeiro, but they remained close friends until Edu sadly passed away in 2008 after a series of health complications. There is a street named after him in his home city of Campinas, São Paulo. Today, Gui Tavares lives in London, still making music and working within a plethora of Brazilian music projects which include the direction of his own choirs Cantar Vocal Ensemble and Nossa Voz, as well as working with Creative Brazil, who conduct Brazilian music workshops in schoolsThis limited-edition official reissue has been remastered from the original ½ inch tapes and pressed to heavyweight 180g vinyl.

UMM KULTHUM - LA YA HABIBY LP

“The Voice of Egypt” or “Egypt’s Fourth Pyramid,” and as she reportedly sold over 80 million records worldwide during her lifetime, she is one of the most popular singers of all time. Born in a small village in the Nile Delta, either in the late 1890's or the early 1900's, she joined her father’s family group at an early age and as a teenager, was taught classical Arab music by singer Mohamed Abo Al-Ela.

The composer Zakariyya Ahmad convinced her to move to Cairo in the early 1920's, where the composer and oud player Mohamed El Qasabgi introduced her to the Arabic Theatre Palace, where she enjoyed her first taste of success, leading to her breakthrough in the early 1930's and subsequent tours of the middle east; local films and the regular broadcasts of her live concerts allowed her to surpass her rivals.

At home, her peak period is seen as the 1940's and 50's, yet she continued to record enthralling work in the 60's and 70's, including “La Ya Habiby,” an epic song of heartache, composed by Riad El Sombati, with lyrics by Abdelfatah Moustapha, first recorded in 1963. Kulthum has since been cited as an influence by Bob Dylan, Robert Plant, Bono and Jah Wobble, among many others.

Spirit Fest - Mirage Mirage

With “Mirage Mirage“, avant-pop quintet Spirit Fest gifts their listeners with their richest, deepest record to date. It’s no surprise when you consider the group’s membership: Saya and Ueno, aka the duo Tenniscoats; Markus Acher, best known as singer of The Notwist; Mat Fowler, who plays with Jam Money and Bons; and Cico Beck, who’s making music with Joasinho, Aloa Input & The Notwist. If that feels like a heavyweight line-up, that’s because it is – yet the overarching mood of Spirit Fest is one of lightness and joy, of experiment and pure pop pleasure.

Sessions for the the album were split between the Tenniscoats’ Tokyo home studio in November 2018, and a small apartment studio in Munich in June 2019. Saya, Ueno and Markus pitched in songs, but sometimes, as with “Fish With Arms”, beguiling moments grew from group improvisations, often kicked off by Cico and Mat. All members stretched their instrumental limbs, too: “I was curious to explore how my home recording methods might work within the studio,” Mat reflects, and you can hear that curiosity in the aforementioned song, which folds in a recording of “a young boy showing his father a painting he'd made of a fish with arms shortly before disappearing between the sliding doors of a lift.”

That’s a lovely metaphor for what Spirit Fest do here. There’s a sincere, child-like generosity to the music, and a playfulness with an everyday surrealism you can hear in some of the experimental interjections across the album. Its final sound is the rolling click-clacking of a bicycle wheel. The bike was key to one of Mat’s explorations of the Tenniscoats’ Tokyo neighbourhood, on “an autumnal cycle ride to a local park. The bicycle had a basket, in which I carried two paintings I had found on the street.” Stumbling across art amongst the everyday; that’s also core to Spirit Fest, particularly after reflecting upon Markus’s description of their music-making practices: “Most of it develops by playing and trying, and decisions are made fast and intuitive.”

There’s more here than just avant-pop: see the pronounced folksy lilt to “The Snow Falls On Everyone”; or “Mohikone”, a gorgeous instrumental, droplets of piano pattering amongst a plangent acoustic guitar. The seven-minute “Zenbu Honto (Every Thing Is Everything)” is a spiralling psychedelic pop mantra, with field recordings and slithering electronics tracing a path under the scrub-growth of guitar, piano and drums. There are guest appearances from Micha Acher (The Notwist, Tied & Tickled Trio) on trumpet, and Aiko Okamoto, who takes part in the choral rounds of the album’s closing tune, “Saigo Song”.

Whichever way you approach it, though, the guiding force of Spirit Fest is friendship and collaboration, giving life to collective dreaming. Summing things up, Markus says, “This record is a lot about relationships, from different perspectives, about wondrous things that happen to everybody sometimes, about shared experiences (like the snow falling on everyone). I think of summer when I listen to it, because we recorded in summer, but more like a long sleepless summer night with lots of talking and music… A psychedelic feeling.” The creative dynamic that makes for those spirited nights of talking and sharing is all there in a story that Mat tells about first meeting Markus, “outside a Paul Klee exhibition we then went on to visit. One painting always sticks with me, ‘The Adventure Ship’. I still feel an affinity between this painting and our own travels on the good ship Spirit Fest. All aboard!”

Words by Jon Dale (Rose Hobart / Tristes Tropiques)

Ava Rocha & Los Toscos - Caminando Sobre Huesos

Names You Can Trust is proud to continue the tradition of collaborations with the finest musical talents the world has to offer, sin fronteras. The latest release features a pair of cuts from the renowned Ava Rocha, backed by punk cumbiero all-stars & NYCT alumni, Los Toscos. Rocha, the daughter of Latin American film legends from Brazil and Colombia and a multi-disciplinarian triple threat herself (music, film, visual art), calls both countries home and has long held a reputation for no-holds-barred artistic commentary on the political follies of the neighboring, intertwined societies.

What she brings on her latest single easily stands alone on musical merit, but gains greater nuance and significance as the powerful lyrics emerge. With a disarming chanteuse vocal delivery and a stark groove that would be equally at home on an early Tom Waits record or in the psychedelic jam sessions of a '70s Fuentes group, this double sider is ultimately a great introduction to Rocha's Latinx punk social commentary but should also slide right in with DJs looking for a versatile addition to their boxes.

Various - Mr Bongo Record Club - Volume 2 (2x12")

This instalment follows on from our acclaimed 'Volume One' - Lauren Laverne's 'Compilation Of The Week', supported by the likes of Disclosure, Jeremy Underground, Horsemeat Disco, Hunee and Laurent Garnier. 'Volume Two' picks up where the last one left off — with a touch more soul and disco — records we've been spinning in our DJ sets and on the radio show of the same name, that inspired this series.

We opened a new record shop in the centre of Brighton late in 2016 - 13 years after the mighty London store closed it's door. Now situated on the ground floor of our Gloucester Yard home the shop is open every Saturday to sell records that we love, some of which you'll hear on the radio shows, and on this album.

It's been a resounding success and we've been able to host sunny instore events and Facebook Live broadcasts with guests including Nick The Record, Dimensions Festival family Debora Ipekel, Flamingods, Slugabed, The Physics House Band and Remi Kolawole & Sensible J.

In 2017 and beyond, we will be releasing more of our official reissues including lesser-known essentials from Brazil, such as Gal Costa's 'India', Robson Jorge & Lincoln Olivetti, Burnier & Cartier alongside 1980's Mexican psychedelia from Luis Perez. We've been digging deep, and will share another edition of our 'The Original Sound of...' series, this time across the border from Mali to neighbouring Burkina Faso. As ever, you'll hear these first, on our radio shows.

There will be more 'Mr Bongo Presents' events - we brought Alain Mion & Cortex to the Jazz Cafe in London in 2017 - and we've highly anticipated slots at Bestival and Lost Village festivals, plus a return to RAPPCATS in Los Angeles, more guest shows on Worldwide FM and NTS Radio and, of course, the continuation
of our own radio shows.

Compiled by David 'Mr Bongo' Buttle and Gareth Stephens,
plus a few personal favourites from Gary Johnson, Ville Marttila and Graham Luckhurst.
