Solitary Dancer - Solitary Dancer, Rapture Version

For its fourth release, Harry Agius aka Midland's Graded label has signed its first new act in the form of Montreal-based Solitary Dancer. With 'Desire & Apathy' being instantly familiar to anyone who heard Midland's Essential Mix earlier this year, this eponymously titled release marks the debut of Solitary Dancer, as well as Agius' second time stepping into the role of label A&R following Hubie Davidson's appearance on Graded's 'Regraded' sub-label last year.

Air Cushion Finish - Flink

REPRESSED !!
Air Cushion Finish's distinctive sound palette reconciles pop music with experimental electronics, think Alan Bishop meets White Noise (with a touch of Super Collider) ...
Air Cushion Finish formed in Berlin in 2007 and comprises of composer jayrope and natural vocal synthesizer Lippstueck, who have graced Berlin's underground scene together since the 1990's. Lippstueck sings, wordless and backwards in time while his partner jayrope tends DIY, electronic, string or percussion instruments small enough to fit into a small suitcase. Changing setup and subsequently music is programmatic to the band, resulting into an unforeseeable slow motion cacophony of whispers, bleeps, rhythms and harmonies. There's a notion of Dada, but you never know. The 8th studio album of ACF marks their current state of poetical accident, swaying, swinging and bouncing, boldly careful, like a transparent tattoo on your forehead.

Tolouse Low Trax - Mask Talk

Tolouse Low Trax

Mask Talk

12inchKALK056LP
Karaoke Kalk
22.06.2017

For ages nighttime was said to be the time of ghosts and spirits. Creatures of the night were believed to gain special powers between midnight and dawn. In latin this shrouded in mystery lapse of time was called "intempesta" - time without time.
Detlef Weinrich, alias Toulouse Low Trax, too, seems to have lingered in the irrational universe of frozen continuity quite frequently within the last two years. Everyone who drifts to the sound of his first solo album "Mask Talk" will soon sense the musical intensity boding a different dancefloor.
Cool, atmospheric new-wave-sharpness, and a cushioned beat rate between 107 and 116 bpm call out a mechanical functionality that doesn't bow to any contemporary doctrine. "Mask Talk": urban music, club album. Big city lights in Africa. Chilly neon-sounds made in Dusseldorf.
As a member of Kreidler, Weinrich just recently participated in the trio's newly found cosmic vibes, as well as in their album "Mosaik 2014". Now, with his solo project, he is demonstrating that a MPC and a small synthesizer-ensemble are enough to bring alive futuristic dance music in the here and now.
Bedroom-recorded under tense creative circumstances, the ten tracks invoke, mostly instrumentally, an eerie atmosphere that would fit in perfectly with an early John Carpenter movie. The tracks' volume sounds as if a whole band had been at work in Weinrichs own four walls. With plenty delay on the bass figures, compact analogue effects, percussive dabs and a rough blend of layers, Weinrich has, without any digital support, created quivering drum machine music, whose dancability he was able to test regularly as a resident DJ and co-owner of the Dusseldof-based club/ bar "Salon Des Amateurs". His new tracks breathe the hypnotic power of his DJ sets, where he arranges diverse rhythms between krautrock, cosmic, electronic and acid. They also remind of analogue-electronical pioneers such as Cluster or Peter Baumann. Also 1980s avant-gardists Cabaret Voltaire or Zazou Bikaye have left their mark, without Toulouse Low Trax explicitely referring to them.
All tracks are committed to experiment. They leave room for every sound without neglecting rhythmical clarity. A dark, urban solanum, full of reverb, whose melodies are never prankish, but whose minimal nonchalance is sure to help not only the dark creatures through the night. "Form is essence brought to the surface" Victor Hugo wrote 150 years ago. "Mask Talk" is reasserting this theory as a destillate of an operating procedure seeking to subvert ingrained listening habits and to resharpen the contours of the audible. Electronic music beyond any categorisation, whose sounds and rhythmics grow to an emotional atmosphere that far exceeds the immediately hearable.

Skeetaz - Fogrequing Ep

Limited re-release of the Astounding debut EP on Spacebar from Skeetaz (James Watts & Bil Bless) - Features Limbertimbre remix Those paying attention will no doubt remember Skeetaz from their contributions to Spacebar Superstars Vol. 2. Here we present a re-release of their astounding full debut for Spacebar Sentiments, the ' Fogrequing EP '. Comprising of James Watts (KiloWatts) and Bil Bless (Son of the Electric Ghost, The Disciple Grin), this is evidently material written by two producers at the peak of their powers. Straddling the thin line between breaks and electro (just the way we like it), this has the energy and funk of good breaks, with the amazing sound design and futuristic edge of electro... 'Fo' kicks off the EP in fine fashion, with hints of P-funk peeping out from amongst the mind-blowing programming. 'Drama Quing' follows, and sounds like a friendlier version of Aphex's 'Windowlicker', adding truly beautiful padded chord progressions to the sharp electro underbelly. Limbertimbre grabs the bull by the horns on the flip and ups the tempo of 'Fo' while keeping the funk in full effect. 'Ogre' rounds the EP off nicely with a glitched downtempo jam that urges us to 'check the rhythm'. Good advice, as just when you think you have got a handle on it the track has sped up, slowed down, sped up again, and those of you who were brave enough to attempt dancing in the first place are left spinning...

Stefan Vincent - All That's Love Has Been In Vain

Stefan Vincent brings the heat with his first solo EP for Anagram, titled 'A Way Out'. The EP opens with 'She Will Keep An Eye Out On Catastrophe': a stunning modernist take on classically composed ambient music. The title track is a melancholic and building track with a healthy dose of four-to-the-floor power. We continue on the flip side with 'Join Us In The Waves': a percussive and swingy acid workout. The last track on ANAGRAM009 is Vincent's 'Everything I See Returns To You Somehow' and it shows the more electro-oriented side of Stefan Vincent's productions with a subtle wink to 90s IDM. Although his approach regarding this track stands on its own, the same profound atmospheric vibe the rest of the tracks have echoes through this layout as well. It's that same echo that stays with us as one of the highlights of our discography comes to an end. Stefan approached this release as a multidisciplinary composition, in which he explores both his musical talent as well as his talent for visual design and painting. The cover artwork of 'A Way Out' was painted by Stefan himself with his music for this release in mind, giving the EP a true Gesamtkunstwerk feeling. This is Anagram number 9, get on it.

E-saggila - Tools Of My Purpose

Tools of My Purpose goes hard. The new 12' by E-Saggila - solo project of Rita Mikhael who co-runs Summer Isle Records - is beautiful, raucous and engaging. Prior to exploring techno, Mikhael has been rooted in the Toronto Noise scene. She implements the hostile themes of power electronics into bass heavy ear-splitting techno. Across four discordant yet melodic tracks, we catch a glimpse of E-Saggila's potential as a future artist to be reckoned with.

Si Begg - Blueprints

Si Begg

Blueprints

12inchSTRIKE164LP
Shitkatapult
21.06.2017

Pioneering music producer SI BEGG is set to release his sixth studio album, BLUEPRINTS, on Berlin's legendary label SHITKATAPULT. His first LP in four years, BLUEPRINTS is a celebration of raw electronics welded to the 'romance of engineering'. The project was inspired by the discovery of an old diagrammatic notebook that belonged to Begg's grandfather, George, in his lifetime a cutting-edge engineer.

Dubbed 'visionary' by The Who's Pete Townsend and widely considered a producer's producer, BEGG has been making genre-defying electronic music for more than two decades. Backed over the course of his career by the likes of John Peel, Thom Yorke, Leftfield, The Glitch Mob, Bassnectar and Mouse On Mars, he has carved a reputation as a recording artist, DJ and sound designer, and in more recent years as an award-winning composer for television and film.

BLUEPRINTS sees BEGG's passion for contemporary score collide with his love of electronic music. Since the release of his last LP, 2013's Permission To Explode, BEGG has written scores for four feature films as well as for Netflix Original series, Lovesick, and Battle Rap documentary, War of Words.

The concept for the album sprang fully formed when BEGG came across the notebook, a beautifully preserved leather-bound volume, annotated in his grandfather's precise hand. The book was filled with meticulous diagrams of compressors and parallel air ducts, graphs recording comparative noise levels at different factories, statistical information detailing the thermal efficiency of power stations, alongside blueprints for futuristic machines yet to be built.

At the same time, BEGG was reconnecting with his own back-to-basics studio machinery, the voltage-powered hardware instead of the slick high-end software used to create most electronic music today. The parallel discoveries felt like synchronicity and BEGG began producing tracks using analogue synthesizers recorded live in one take, augmented by circuit bend effects units and the electro magnetic field noise created by mobile phones and hard drives. In his characteristically uncompromising way, rather than try to hide the cogs and gears and remove the excess distortion, BEGG decided to champion these idiosyncratic machines. In putting them centre stage, he aimed to demonstrate that not only were these unique tools to create art, they were simultaneously works of art in their own right. Like his grandfather's designs, they had an aesthetic beauty all of their own, form following function.

The pieces on the album evoke the beauty and romance of great engineering, often overlooked in a landscape of post-industrial gloom - the breathtaking geometry of vast gasometers, the sweeping grandeur of a suspension bridge, the finesse of circuit diagrams, a precisely laid-out city viewed from the air at night. From the hums and sparking pops of Heat Resistant Alloys to the relentless subsonic sine waves underpinning Resistance Is Expensive, raw electrical signals pulse through the heart of the music.

This is a work of complex, evolving mathematical patterns, circuitry bent out of shape. It is a hymn to the voltage-controlled oscillator.

D'marc Cantu - Parisian Summer

This release was a follow up of sorts to my remix of Ricardo Tobar's « If I love you ». Having spoke to Jerome Mestre of Desire a few times since the remix, he and I decided that it would be great to follow it up with a dance focused release. The idea behind « Parisian Summer » came after I played the Weather Fesitval in Paris during the spring of 2013. The atmosphere was amazing and so many new ideas emerged from my experiences there. « PartyDaze », « Svetlana » and « MadDance » were all created ahead of my show at La Machine that weekend. All three of those tracks were made with the purpose of capturing that raw energy that was being given off by some of the best crowds I've ever witnessed. In Paris they party with you not to you, so it was important for me to create songs that captured those moments when the crowd was at their most energetic. « Irregular Bedfellows » was created as a nice counterbalance to the high energy drive of the previous three tracks and « Uneven » was to bookend of the whole EP. Created several years ago it languished in the completed folder on my hard drive. Never really finding its right place until this project came along. It sits squarely in the middle of a relaxing dream and a feverish nightmare, truly Uneven. ' D'Marc Cantu - May 2014

Barbir, Nicola Kazimir - Gentrified Underground Youth (2x12")

We eroded pre-existent structures constructing an open heterotopic space, a horizontal and vertical thinking found its way through physical- and cyberspace, Here, nothing manifested instantly - flippancy left space for any kind of interaction and appropriation. Within (or well beyond) economic pressure points which diluted production, this was our opportunity to try out different potentials with no restrictions to the public, while simultaneously scrutinising the general framework of institutions and human behaviours.

Synkro - Acceptance

Synkro

Acceptance

2x12inchAMB1301
Apollo
19.06.2017

Initially coming from a background in the musically raucous worlds of 2 Step and Garage, Synkro has, over time, developed a sound that is altogether more introspective, more emotive and more emotionally complex. Stepping up here with his second release on legendary Apollo Records, Synkro delivers eight tracks that - while retaining some of the stutter and swing of Garage, are far more rooted in the textural world of ambient music for which Apollo is famed.
There is a consistency in Synkro's work throughout this release that suggests an artist who is heading in a singular direction and very much crafting their own sound. All eight tracks come drenched in thick layers of smoky reverb and make use of long drawn-out, drone like textures to set up these atmospheric musical canvases within which Synkro then crafts his rhythmically complex, emotionally mournful sound sculptures. The use of vocals is sparing but effective and skillful, as evidenced in the spoken word samples and pitched up R&B vocals on Acceptance and Spirals, and the beautifully pitched effected voice on Don't Want.
There is a move towards more organic textures, too, with a genty played acoustic guitar featuring prominently on Mutual Divide (a track that features fellow Apollo artists Indigo), and broad, open guitar strums forming the backdrop to another of the tracks here, Disappear. The use of these sounds and timbres again points to an artist crafting music that transcends the nightclub obsessed world of modern electronic music and creating music that has a more time-worn, grown up feel to it.
Listening to all eight tracks in their entirety, the listener is transported into a parallel aural universe of late night, reflective states that feel weighed with a certain sadness but still retain an unmistakable underpinning of hope. Within that, there's something very current about Synkro's output - a kind of expression of how fractured and disparate life in the early part of the 21st century has become - where hyper modern production technology rubs shoulders with virtually untreated guitar and sad, distorted voices; where the constant chatter of electronic communication fails to distort the isolation of the modern world. To be able to distill these sensations and emotions into music, as Synkro does, is a rare skill and guarantees that Synkro is an artist who we'll be hearing a lot more from in the future.

Untold - Hek029

Hemlock Recordings
05.07.2017

Hemlock founder Untold is back on the label with his first vinyl EP since 'Doff' on sub-label HBLK back in 2015. This release follows appearances on last year's #savefabric compilation, and more recently on 'Magic City III' compiled by Mixpak boss Jubilee.

HEK029 follows a rewarding period of A&R for Hemlock that has so far delivered EPs from Bruce and Parris, with several more scheduled to drop throughout 2017.

This EP's two winding tracks are a natural progression from the fiercely textural drum work of Untold's previous singles and album 'Black Light Spiral.' Here the material is given more space to breathe and released from the grid creating a lighter more footloose feel.

'Tear Up the Club' carries the weight of DMZ era half-step using a loose web of elasticated breaks and builds to reveal a striking melodic line.

On 'Watton Res' exotic tones are further compressed and expanded in sequence, encasing drum machine, keyboards and guitar work within a delicate shell.

Scan 7 - Direct Effect EP

Detroit isn't just a place. Sure, it IS a place, and those who physically live there know its triumphs and its tragedies far better than anyone else. But Detroit is also a feeling, a sound, a philosophical home for those who connect with the futuristic, dystopian sounds of Detroit techno and electro on a deep level.

Those tendrils of connection reach far and wide, bringing people from all over the world into orbit with the people and sounds of the city, connecting through the snap of a snare, the wiggly groove winding its way through the beat, the beauty in the sound of strings, the anger in a bubbling bassline.

On this label collaboration between two modern purveyors of techno and electro, Detroit Underground and Detroit Techno Militia have brought their game face and also connected Detroit with producers from elsewhere who've long been tapped into the techno and electro zeitgeist.Activating legendary techno mystery collective Scan 7 for the leadoff title track Direct Effect, they take us on a high speed chase, a desperately frenetic percussion jam crunching its way through the bass bedrock for maximum damage. DTM's T.Linder then slams down the accelerator on a brutal remix, kicking up the stomp and reversing the bass for a subtle melodic turn, while the ride cymbals cut deep enough to draw blood. Romania's Andrew Red Hand, known for his fierce electro production, does not disappoint with his remix. He drops down into the classic low slung bass and snare rhythm, letting the metallic bass bubble up like a submariner surfacing with soundsystem intact.

Rounding out with a cave dwelling minimalist stomper are extant techno legends Teste. Originally from Hamilton, now based in Berlin, Teste bring their hypnotic sensibility to a hammer beat to end the remix lineup with a bang.

Packing much sonic variety into four tracks, Direct Effect shows that Detroit's heart is still beating strong, collecting people in the path of its sound, mapping out a line between techno soldiers far and wide. It's what made the city great, and why it remains the spiritual home of techno.

"A lot of these tracks were recorded in situ in the mix itself," Snaith says. Varg - Star Alliance - 2x12"

After "Star Alliance"'s initial release as a limited six tape-box set late last year, it was apparent that there was a need for a reissue, which now comes in the form of this remastered double LP set with a selection of the best work and even a few new tracks added. The story is the same but the narrative has been sharpened. Over the last few years, Varg has manifested himself, not only as one of the most productive new voices in European electronic and techno music - with countless releases and projects - but also as one of the most interesting of the lot. Completely free from any concern of genre notions towards his music, he moves freely between fields and does this in such a fluent way that it is hard to think of anyone that can match him. With the music that makes up "Star Alliance", it is clearer than ever before that Varg - while being an extremely talented techno producer, at the same time is much more than that. "Star Alliance" has tracks of spacious acid standing next to heavy industrial rhythms, piercing abstract modular synth work, beautiful soundscapes, piano pieces and field recordings. And while the techniques, qualities and styles differ with almost every track, they stand perfectly together and shape a beautiful narrative. Thematically "Star Alliance" deals with movement. The heavy melancholia that is present throughout the entire release, reminds us that when traveling to any destination, we will have to leave somewhere else behind. "Star Alliance" that takes its name from a point system between airline companies has a sort of sad restlessness about it. Wherever we are traveling to, it is clear that we won't be there for long, the people are faceless and the cities nameless, The airports, night clubs and company blur, but Hilton always looks like Hilton and Ecstasy is called Ecstasy everywhere.

Mark Forshaw / Chris Moss Acid - Computer Controlled

Computer Controlled Records is a new vinyl only label from Belfast, Northern Ireland encompassing the raw analogue sounds of Chicago & Detroit style techno, house and electro keeping a DIY ethos with screen printed sleeves.

The first release comes from Mark Forshaw who has previously released on Tabernacle, Mathematics, III Rivers and Apartment and is one third of Phantom Planet Outlaws alongside Binny & John Heckle. This ep delivers 4 tracks of raw analouge acid and Detroit techno funk.
---
Belfast born imprint Computer Controlled Records follow up on their acid rich debut Explorer EP from Mark Forshaw with a five tracker from Chris Moss Acid on a release that also features a jacking collaboration with Breakin' Records owner and all time don DMX Krew. It marks the third in a run of original EP's from Chris Moss Acid who's been enjoying something of a renaissance in his productivity, releasing with a host of top grade labels from to Jerome Hill's revered and uncompromising techno imprint Don't and Dutch electronic hub Shipwrec.

Here he delivers his five track Righteous Beats EP which is set off on the A side by Spatial Dimensions where discordant synths and bell powered melodies are ignited by driving percussion atop a pulsating bass line. Second track The Shamen rolls off driving drum fills and 303 acid lines illuminate the track as Moss Acid takes things up into peak time techno sphere until the A side is summated with his collaboration with DMX Krew, Where Is Your Jack, in a rawer toned track, featuring a jittering bassline and off kilter drum patterns which rove between distorted acid lines.

The B side carries two dense and dark techno numbers to complete the acid romp; title track Righteous Acid Beat is marched along by yet another driving bass line as a pistol shots of noisy high hats punctuate the track. Ominous chants of 'We're gonna get you' lead us into final track Getchu where dark tension rides a brooding and dense techno horror story.g

This debut release takes the form of a various-artists three-tracker.
A-side is Benedikt's "Kraft Sein," a straightforward powerfunk stomper, generous with syncopated clap trickery and pounding kicks. Through the industrial-tinted vibe, a game of filtered stabs and delayed resonances draws an enigmatic landscape.
On the flip, Jean Pierre's "Once Bitten" combines an ever-evolving and introspective synth line with the physicality of a classic bass/909 workout. A detailed architecture of hiss and white noise brings a finish to its mysterious mood.
Viktoria's "Universal" closes the EP with its enveloping pads, creating soul-soothing harmonies on top of a fluid, rattling groove. Subtle wavy breakdowns and breathing textures craft a climate of peaceful exaltation

Orphan Swords - License To Desire

Orphan Swords see the reissue of their License To Desire' LP on limited edition vinyl on Aurora Borealis on May 15th. The Belgian duo bring a heady, fog shrouded sonic maelstrom to the label, perfect for the post-truth era.

What sort of music is this What genre do we file it under Hard to say. It sounds like a record that Aurora Borealis should release. There's chaos, there's unhallowed chanting, there's some fierce rhythm and there's undeniably some abuse of electronic equipment. We'll leave the definitions up to the listener, but with titles referencing demons of Goetia and the world's oldest profession we'll let the good times roll.

Formed in 2013, Orphan Swords is a Belgian electronic duo. Their music, described as a brutal hypnosis' by Ransom Note, has been released on Desire Records, Clan Destine and Idiosyncratics. Idiosyncratic is indeed a description that perfectly fits both their releases and live performances. Recently back from the US, they have shared bills with acts as diverse as Oathbreaker, Andy Stott and Vatican Shadow.

Their new collaborative side project Black Swords with Stuart Argabright of Black Rain (Blackest Ever Black) was released on Vienna's Noiztank label. "The ten-minute Marchosias'...builds into a droning blur with surging drums, echoed, incomprehensible vocals and all sorts of sharp edges. "Asmoday" conjures its own mass of screeching, cackling distortion, but adds an icy sense of melody through a few sustained synth riffs, and fixes everything to a rolling kick. "Hooker" is the most subdued thing yet from Orphan Swords, but it's no less potent. Its steady bass thrums and light, hazy swirls of harmonized noise make for a supremely soothing comedown." - ResidentAdvisor

  • B2: Arabische Nacht
  • B3: Ein Kleiner Walzer
  • B4: Lieben Ist
  • B5: Parademarsch

Ultra-rare D.I.Y minimal / synth-pop / industrial / darkwave album from 1986!

Kozmonaut was the personal project of a young & talented Canadian musician called Michael Gutierrez, who moved to San Francisco in the early 80s. Influenced by Kraftwerk and German culture / electronic music, Michael recorded the Flieg' album all by himself at his garage studio, using the pseudonym of Hans Schiller'.

1000 copies were pressed on his own label, Vier Productions Inc, but they were never distributed or sold at the time, with virtually the entire pressing being discarded, as Michael, a perfectionist, was not satisfied with the spelling mistakes on the cover, among other things. In 1989, Michael, along with Pieter Ziegelmeier, formed the famous industrial / electronic band Kode IV.

Sadly, Michael contracted AIDS and passed away in 1994. All the contents of his garage (tapes, albums, synths and recording equipment) were sold for cheap or ended up in the street.

Fast forward to 2010: An adventurous record hunter (Christian Peintner) finds a copy of the Flieg' album at a thrift shop in San Francisco. At first, he thinks it's a German album but after some investigation, he discovers the name of Michael Gutierrez which leads him to Kode IV and then to Peter Ziegelmeier. He visits Peter who tells him the real story of Michael Gutierrez aka Hans Schiller and Kozmonaut.

Flieg' is an excellent album, a crossover of a wide range of styles from early Industrial (paving the way for Michael's later sounds with Kode IV), to Synth-Pop, Experimental Electronics, ambient and Dark Wave. Michael uses the vocoder very effectively and in one of the songs, Tidal Meditation', he recorded the Golden Gate Bridge fog horn to use it as a sample.

"Biotope Trax" features three tracks that instantly and unambiguously express Neewt's skill, establishing a very distinct style in sampling, programming, arranging and jamming in general, while retaining a certain diversity, infused with his broad variety of influences, from psychedelic, prog rock, krautrock, and a trailer load of underground sounds old and new.

Cluster Lizard - Edge Of The Universe

Ltd. to 300 copies, silk-screen printing on PVC sleeve.

LE CABANON presents its new Stand-alone series, beside its Couleurs EP series.

CLUSTER LIZARD are Dmytro Fedorenko (KOTRA) & Kateryna Zavoloka (ZAVOLOKA), Ukrainian musicians now based in Vienna and KVITNU label owners.

Edge of the Universe is a conceptual project that drives the listener into unique cinematic atmospheres, developing a sonic equilibrium between sensitivity and harshness, quietness and noisiness. A subtle alchemy which evolves progressively with loud layered rhythms, crystalline synths, crackling noises and unexpected breaks.

"Driven by cyberdelic rhythms across interstellar sonic scapes. Minimalist transmutation textures and pulsing dark matterfrequencies evolvewith superconsciousness bass vibrations. Sparkling high tech pads advance with tense raw analog buzz. Starburst trembling beats with psychedelic solar oscillations, that shine and burn mind into alchemical time drift."
