Elektro Guzzi - Polybrass
DEN309LP
Denovali Records
2x12inch22.11.201822.NOV.18

HouseDeepTechnoElectro

A trio of guitar, bass and drums, Elektro Guzzi overcome the boundary between analogue versus digital, performing techno live with the drive of a machine and the sonic detail of an instrument - without any computers or loopers. For their upcoming album Polybrass, Elektro Guzzi have drastically expanded their sonic repertoire: both in the studio and on stage, they are joined by an ensemble of three trombonists, opening up a whole new realm of possibilities. With Hilary Jeffrey, Daniel Riegler and Martin Ptak, the band are joined by three brass heavyweights, each of them well renowned for both their solo ventures as well as projects such as The Kilimanjaro Darkjazz Ensemble, Sand and Zeitkratzer. By treating the three trombones not simply as a set of extra instruments but rather as one coherent body of sound on its own, Elektro Guzzi dissociate the brass instruments from their conventional use and repurpose them into something completely different: a modular synthesizer, with each trombone representing one oscillator. In doing so, Elektro Guzzi add new layers of depth to their music, emphasizing a more cinematic side of their music: like the soundtrack for a movie, Polybrass is bigger, darker, more dramatic, more intimate. Warm and fuzzy textures float weightlessly above fragile soundscapes and complex sonic fragments. At the same time, the band's signature sound runs distinctly through the entire album: solid percussive grooves, stripped down to the absolute minimum it takes to make your body move. Hypnotic repetition, building tension and suspense up to a point where the energy of the music gets so intense you feel like you can physically touch it with your hands, interlaced with organic patterns of sound, constantly changing and evolving, pulsating and oscillating. Vinyl: heavy sleeves + heavy printed inner sleeves, 180g vinyl with download code.

HouseTechTechnoTechno

Since 2015 Tiger Stripes has been an invaluable contributor to Drumcode's 'little brother' Truesoul.
As recent as March he released 'Sound of the Bettest' in collaboration with Riva Starr, their fresh ragga influenced take on techno entrenched as a 2018 highlight for the label.
Drawing from a wide palette of sounds to craft his groovy, personality-laden take on techno, the Swede has produced arguably his finest work yet with the 'Insanity' EP.
'Baby' is a melting pot of three decades worth of influences, from James Brown, to Northern Soul and indie pop of Ariel Pink.
The result is a stunning kaleidoscopic techno treat, that brims with rave, garage and funky house spirit. 'Insane' is a dynamic feast for the eardrums as trippy arpeggios, a persistent vocal and lush synth leads cascade throughout the seven-minute track.
'Too Deep (to Bear) follows, an exhilarating slice of late-night techno before the EP concludes with 'Dying Planet', mixing up a potent environmental message with tough dancefloor functionalism.

HouseElectronicaBeatsElectroExperimental

Planet Battagon are innovators in Droid Jazz. Electronics, jazz and outer-national sounds ain't no new thing. But following in the extra terrestrial sounds and cosmic mythology of Sun Ra, Planet Battagon are not reaching for the cosmos but simply made of it. Droid consciousness is the starting point but what's consciousness got to do with it. The droid's need culture, music and art and of the highest and most experimental of that lies Droid Jazz.

Originating on Lord Battagon's home planet the group are documenting the folklore and jazz stylings of the Trans-neptunia neighbourhood out on the edgelands of the solar system. This debut release follows on from a Lord Battagon outing on the Atlantic Jaxx label. 'Who's out on Quaoar' is taken from the Ltd Ed 12' 'Battagon Symphony', part one of 'The Rough Guide to Trans-Neptunia'. The release also features 'Salacians of Neptunia', a homage to the early droid cultural pioneers and the chant like 'Moon of Dysnomia' that is played ceremonially to temper the erratic saline tides of the aforementioned moon especially during its retrograde period. Droids and saline do not mix well and OntheCorner are releasing these 'Rough Guides to Trans-Neptunia' after intercepting distressed transmissions prior to a
devastating saline tide.

The Noise Droids of Planet Battagon are:
Jack Baker - Acoustic Drums
Martin Slattery - Bass Clarinet,Alto Sax & FX
Oli Savill - Percussion
Mickey Ball - Trumpet
Nathan Curran (Tugg) - Synth Bass, Syn Drums, FX & Conductor

Various - Free the Robots Presents: Tempo Dreams, Vol. 5
BJLP20
Bastard Jazz Recordings
2x12inch20.11.201820.NOV.18

BeatsBreak-BeatTrip-HopPopJazz

Bastard Jazz is proud to present the next installment of our long running Tempo Dreams compilation series. As with previous volumes of the compilation, we've tapped an established artist that we're big fans of to shine a light on their personal favorite producers, and compile an album up of all unreleased music from emerging & underrated young talent. And with Volume 5, we're happy to welcome in the Los Angeles based but globetrotting selection of Free The Robots.

Rooted in Santa Ana, CA, Chris Alfaro aka Free the Robots has spent over a decade taking his craft to audiences around the globe. Known as one of the pioneering artists to come out of LA's infamous beat movement, the energy and technical skill behind his live performances have landed him among the greats, sharing stages with Dj Shadow, Prefuse 73, Flying Lotus, to Afrika Bambaataa. Crafting stories to tell with his ever-evolving solo project Free the Robots, he has always had the ability to jump in and out of other worlds inspiring a unique signature sound that hints at jazz, psych, electronic, and hip hop, while remaining un-genre-fiable.

Staying almost permanently on the road, Chris has come across an array of artists and scenes around the world. Different tours and temporary living situations have landed him in the middle of both the DIY underground and more mainstream clubs and stages. Some artists he's connected with have either kept it proudly local or breached international borders. Underrated, unknown, or already on the brink; these are just a few of the people that have crossed paths with Free The Robots. He's chosen these songs as a representation of some of the vibes that inspire his music: Jazz, Psychedelia, Dirtwave, Beats, and a little bit of Future Funk make up Volume 5 of his Tempo Dreams series.

As with all previous volumes, the compiler has produced a track exclusively for the album, which Chris delivers in the bass heavy, South East Asian vibes of "Nasi Goreng" (also available on a limited edition 7" with another unreleased FTR track). Other producers included on the album include Mophono, Never Ending Echo, Kuromoji, RSI-MSK, The Breathing Effect, Cazal Organism, Lefto, Chubby Boss, Caliph8, TITLE, Nois IV, The Heavy Twelves, Mu. and Markey Funk.

Friendship. Gratitude. Music Passion. Turbo Recordings is proud to present the feel-good story of the year with the debut release from Tiga & The Martinez Brothers.

"This is a true labour of love,' says Tiga. 'Two of the most refreshingly positive figures in dance music teaming with me, the heartless cynic with a heart of gold. Positivity and actual quality: the best of both worlds."

Tiga was originally meant to produce tracks for the DJ duo, but the sessions soon evolved into a full-fledged collaboration. The three men manned the studio in psychic unison, laying real-time drum programming and minimal storytelling over a techno foundation to create a truly dynamic dynamic. The result is some of the best work of their careers.

'Chris and Steve brought a deep knowledge of house music and DJ energy-flow, while I left my deep hatred of live studio jam sessions at the door," adds Tiga. 'These tracks are tougher, funkier and weirder than 99.3% of contemporary dance music, and it's all because we were brave enough to get sincere and real."

The material was written and recorded over the course of two sessions at Montreal's Lost Star Studios, a haven for vintage gear and laid-back vibes right out of your most casual dreams. It was easily the most fun anyone's had in a studio since 2014.

"You can keep your VIP laminates and hot flavors of the moment,' concludes Tiga. 'I'm here to tell you that there's nothing cooler than the magic of friendship.'

Part II of the collaboration is set for release on The Martinez Brothers' Cuttin' Headz label under the name The Martinez Brothers & Tiga, an inspiring nod to the importance of fairness in project credits

They played in Australia, the US and toured Europe regularly. United Kingdom included. The first opus of the now series 'I have trouble in mind' was released on the initiative of Bill and Lisa Roe (iconic label 'trouble in mind") in the US in 2014. It combines all the 45t , unreleased songs recorded by the couple for 'Mojo magazine", tribute to Beach Boys, fanzines, micro labels. All the titles which were difficult to find and that fans were looking for. And now, here it is: I ve got trouble in mind vol 2. The Limiñanas now work mainly with the European label 'Because music". Thanks to their common forces, 3 albums were released. «Traité de guitarre Triolectique» with Pascal Comelade, 'Malamore", which was a tribute to Dino Risi and in 2018 'Shadow People' in the company of the American psychedelic pope Anton Newcombe. Marie and Lio work a lot, they record all the time and love 45t, maxi's and still collaborate with small labels from around the world for specific projects like the traditional song of Christmas 'Convenanza 'from Andrew Weatherall. In this second opus some covers of their favorite titles will be available. The lords of the new church 'Russia"n roulette", 'two sisters' from the Kinks which is the first song recorded with Anton and remixed by the American producer of the first White Stripes album Jim Diamond. 'Live will Tell' from Polnareff, a tribute to 'Suicide' recorded in Australia from the live version of the band and many others. The artwork was designed by Elric Duffau, as for the first volume. Small bonus: the two album covers placed side by side complement each other for a single piece.

'Heritable Traits' is the first EP from Distant Echoes on his long-time friend Buck's Substrato records.

'Rail to rail' opens the release with a straight-forward techno groove which develop constantly reaching the climax thanks to an uncompromising mix of electrified modular sounds and deep textures. 'Barking dogs', the second track of the A-side, is marked out by a rolling kick pattern framed with an ever-changing yet hypnotic bass bringing you on a mysterious trip until the end.

On the B-side 'Lighthouse in the fog' brings us back to label's most intimate club attitude, where the 3/4 kick and the FM bass interact endlessly helped by moving textures and minimal hats, typical of Distant Echoes' productions. The B2 'Swirling thoughts' is a gently-hectic broken beat track, suitable for any use where the dreamy soundscapes contrast with the aggressive Cwejman grooves and kick. 'A walk in the field' closes the release with a down tempo sexy groove conceived for the most different sets, the catharsis is completed by the constant movement of LFOs embracing each others progressively until the end of the track.

Skin Town - Country
TNP028
Time No Place
12inch16.11.201816.NOV.18

Hip-HopR & BPopSynth-Pop

Skin Town's unexpected return with their new album 'Country' finds the duo upping the already high bar set on their striking dark pop gem debut 'The Room' with a dauntless artistic statement that trades clever posturing for vulnerability. Yielding their prowess with more restraint, Skin Town's 'Country' hits harder and cuts deeper - doubling down on their narcotic cocktail of strong R&B hooks, spacious bewitching productions, and marked sense of melody that puts vocalist Grace Hall and multi-instrumentalist Nick Turco in a class of their own.

Many saw that potential on their debut with support from Dazed, Interview, The FADER, KCRW, as well as artists like Tinashe shouting out Skin Town. Lamenting on the duo's unmistakable chemistry, Pitchfork says, "Turco's synthscapes are huge and scene-stealing, while Hall's husky voice strikes a glorious medium between Abel Tesfaye and Sade." Their latest is even more potent, a particular strain of sad dance music that feels timeless and raw.

'Country' refines Skin Town's minimal framework of tethering hip-hop/R&B rhythms to Hall's smoky, precise phrasing exploring richer atmospheres and darker concerns. Written and recorded over 3 years, the album touches upon depression, loss, hedonism, poverty, rebellion, sex work, empowerment, and love's contradictions. The album's completion was sidetracked many times with Hall suffering a string of life-threatening mysterious immune system ailments, as a result there is a lot of pain and joy in this record, made with literal blood and tears.

The opener "Bad" signals at this departure from their upbeat predecessor stripping away the beats, relying on the interplay between Turco's ringing chords, the enveloping synthwork and Hall's melancholic, rhythmic intonations. "Mute" brings back the drums, couched in a slinking hip-hop beat and a creeping synth lead. Throughout the record, Turco's productions glean from an eclectic, disparate mix: melodic Amiga tracker music, Metro Boomin', New Age, The-Dream while Hall seems ever more comfortable exploring syncopation and half-rap/half-sung excursions. This is inventive, uncanny pop music where Enya, Offset, Zola Jesus, and Future inhabit the same space.

Billy Milligan Trio, 3rd release of the label Lowlife Cartel, collects new ambient music that reflects our present moment. The musical aesthetic is described as a unified primitive/futuristic sound combining features of world ethnic styles with advanced electronic techniques. Predominant melancholic atmosphere, work on textures and hybridation with acoustic inherited by experimental jazz. Its title "Billy Milligan Trio", is a reference to sci-fi book from Daniel Keyes "The Minds of Billy Milligan".
The EP begins with "The Sky Was Pearl Grey" , by Shcaa (Archipel, Sharingtones), track, without beat, a guitar note accompagnied by a drone lament releases a trippy and introspective atmosphere. A light vocal, by Shcaa himself, comes subty at the middle of this gloomy exploration.
"Useless Man" by Mårble (Hair Del Records) is a leftfield saturated complaint, mixing jazzy and electronic elements. A distorted voice accompagnied by a piano as the key melody. "Para La Olimpiada" by Mårble is defined by fourth world music genre. The release ends with "Toll Fraud", by L:E:R (Archipel), cut from a full electronic live session, oscillating between a minimal beat and slightly evolving ambiance. In its entirety Billy Milligan Trio is a spirograph of uniquely experimental artists merging together to create something even more beguiling. A truly arresting listen.

Invigorating, skewered electronica and bristling, off-kilter techno drive the first release in 15 years by Dublin electronic duo Ambulance (Sunken Foal & Dave Nuremburg), delivering the first EP on the Open Ear label, the latest adventure in sound from the eponymously-titled Irish music festival.

Previously of Planet Mu and Front End Synthetics, the Ambulance project had been put on hold in any capacity this decade until 2017 when they were invited to close out the 2nd edition of the Open Ear festival, Ireland's leading experimental & alternative electronic music festival. Inspired by this performance, the pair returned to the studio and the first fruits of this labour make up the Combover EP. This also marks the first release by Open Ear on it's label which, like the festival, will serve as a platform for experimental dance floor & avant-garde music from the Irish underground.

Kickstarting with the sprawling, ever-evolving, glitched funk of "Caitríona Chéile", the tense, paranoid techno of "Douche Noir" then takes over with the following "Luxury Crackers" keeping the unsettling atmosphere pitched up before it opens up to reveal aslightlygentler side. The EP closes with the *Greasy* title track, a collage of shimmering synthesisers, jittery, free-wheeling drums and oddball sampling, all reaching for air at the same time.

PopDisco

Utopia Cloak arrives on FILM with six track EP, Marina Gardens. Utilising both electronic & acoustic components, the British producer crafts hazy, dynamic electronica with a decidedly emotive bent. The music explores a curious production aesthetic - at once half sunk and at the same time gloriously crisp and direct. Caustic drum machine hits underpin the majority of the work, compete with polyrhythmic rolls & glitches, while softly warping synth lines occupy the majority of the remaining sonic space. Rather than working explicitly with nostalgia, Utopia Cloak makes more subtle references to the classic sounds of yore - riffing on Downtempo & IDM with gentle and considered nuance, eking out arcane hooks & rich melodies with a pleasing focus on compositional structure & songcraft. Contrast is the key here, though - and Utopia Cloak works hard to find the balance between metallic per-cussion strikes and wide-angle instrumental elements, avoiding chaos in favour of a lush, rewarding lis-tening experience. Very first version of the first single by Cortex, reissued as 7inch for the 1st time.

I remember that I and Alain Gandolfi wanted to put 'Mary & Jeff' on the A side, but the producer decided to set 'L'Enfant Samba' instead because he thought that the voice of Mireille would be more selling than my piano... 6 months after, at the beginning of 1976, 'Mary & Jeff' was a hit in a lot of Disco clubs and radios!' Mark Broom - Mercury w/ Silicon Scally Remix

TechnoTechno

Redsonja Records presents: Reference number 17, 'Mercury', a 3 track EP, on Digital and Vinyl signed by two internationally renowned English artists, highly acclaimed on the global electronic scene. We are talking about none other than Mark Broom and Silicon Scally (Carl Finlow).

Mark Broom delivers the goods with 2 original tracks exclusively for Redsonja Records.
'Mercury' is techno in its purest form, a beautiful groove delineated by an accompanying string meandering synthetically along the track from start to finish, at times broken up by Broom's generous use of delay and reverberating claps, making the track compact and ready for the dance floor. Whereas a darker and more complex techno sound, alive with trademark Broom percussion, identifying with the current techno club scene can be heard spilling out of his second track '77S3'

Carl Finlow also presents us with a little gem of a track, surprising us once again, this time with an electro remix of 'Mercury' in true Silicon Scally style. The resources he puts to use define him as a serious producer, successfully maintaining significance and groove whilst distorting the soundscape by overlaying the sinister rhythm with captivating fettles and shapes of sound, the end result being literally extraordinary.

This EP makes for a must have in any techno sympathiser's collection, as RS17 is an all round excellent and authentic production, made with lots of care and attention.

HouseElectronicaBeatsBreak-BeatElectro

Footshooter is the moniker of London based producer, DJ and musician Barney Whittaker. His style blends skippy, broken beat production with live instrumentation to create an organic, rich sound and he frequently collaborates with emcees, poets and vocalists exploring different tones and moods.

His last record, Strange Days EP (released on Famous Friends), gained regular plays on NTS, Balamii, WorldWide FM and, most recently, by Bonobo in a DJ set at his NYC Boiler Room.

'Technicolour Nights', due out on YAM Records later this year, is a meditation on long evenings & nights out and how they vary in atmosphere, mood and colour. Opening with the aptly named and ethereal 'Intro', the EP quickly jumps into sunshine territory with 'Juan's Stairwell' before 'On Telegraph Hill' brings the heads down for a meditative two-step groover to close up the A-side.

On the flip, Footshooter flexes his 160bpm muscles on 'Mars' with the help of London based vocalist and MC And Is Phi, before dropping the tempo just a touch on 'Rotations', a steppy, Rhodes-laden journey through London nightlife. 'Our Love' lowers the tempo even further to bring the EP to a close on a bittersweet note.

Django Reinhardt devised an astonishing new technique of playing guitar built around the two fingers on his left hand that were left with full mobility after a devastating fire and, together with Stéphane Grapelli, he was responsible for defining the gypsy jazz genre. A nomadic spirit whose life became a never-ending quest to journey to wherever his precious talent would take him, Django Reinhardt will forever be revered as one of the most unique, gifted and influential musicians of the 20th century.

Optimo Music is delighted to release the new album from Lia Mice, Australian-born but UK-residing DJ, producer and instrument designer.

Here's a few words from Lia - "When I moved to London in 2015, many things changed at once - I started going to more techno and electro nights, I changed my live-set setup, and I had access to a fully-equipped recording studio through my music masters programme. At the same time I was reading a lot of books on time travel, not just science fiction but also psychology and neuroscience - like how the human brain perceives time from moment to moment, how we can experience overlapping time, and how we interact with our past and future through memory and imagination. 'The Sampler As A Time Machine' is the result of all these new influences coming together. The tracks were developed out of ongoing studio experiments interpreting these different ideas of time travel by using samplers and tape to re-sample and manipulate original music performed by me on various instruments including my voice."

Spacemen 3 - Taking Drugs To Make Music To Take Drugs To

2x12inch06.11.201806.NOV.18

PopRockIndie

Double LP on heavyweight 180 gram audiophile black vinyl in a wide spined sleeve with new artwork layout. Re-mastered by John Rivers at Woodbine Studios especially for vinyl release. Includes a bonus track not on the CD version and new artwork design. Never has a record been so aptly titled, or so perfectly descriptive of a band's particular vision of the universe. For all that, the original appearance of Taking Drugs was in fact a bootleg on the semi-legendary/semi-notorious Father Yod imprint in 1990, later supplemented with contemporary outtakes and cuts for the Bomp reissue in 1994 and one further song for the Space Age version in 2000. The original seven tracks, dated January 1986 and the first recordings to feature Pete Bain on bass, are collectively known as the Northampton Demos, understandably named for the recording location in a studio outside said English city. Both Sonic and Pierce have been on record as long preferring these takes to the eventual versions that surfaced for the most part on Sound of Confusion. Certainly it's a fine set of performances, showing a definite step toward the more familiar sound of the group and away from the rougher takes on For All the Fucked Up Children of the World. "The Sound of Confusion," aka "Walkin' With Jesus," rips along with fierce energy, Pierce's singing and the rampaging, primitive wail and rumble of the band just wonderful. "Losing Touch With My Mind" takes things to an even higher level, a huge wallop of feedback and beat (Natty Brooker's drumming in particular delivers just what the doctor ordered), Pierce delivering the lines with a flat, cutting drawl. On the slightly lighter tip, "Come Down Easy" is more or less fully in place (aside from singing about it being 1986!), possessing a more upfront but less vocally distinct feel than the Perfect Prescription take. The tracks that surfaced on the later reissues come from a variety of different sessions, including the original take on "Feel So Good" and a good live version of "Things'll Never Be the Same," one of several cuts featuring Brooker's drumming replacement Rosco.
