Freestyle dig out another rarity in the form of a DIY brit-funk 7" from Highway Motion aka David Humphrey (a session drummer who played with Sparks, and with PiL on the iconic Metal Box LP & Death Disco 12"). Tinged with raw post-punk edge and 70s library music-style synth leads, this 45 is quite simply massive amounts of fun.

David Humphrey's professional career as a drummer began aged 19 with Public Image Ltd, providing some of the drum tracks on their iconic Metal Box album and Death Disco single. Humphrey would then go on to work with Mike Oldfield and then Sparks, playing with the latter on their Number One Song in Heaven tour, Top of The Pops and recording sessions for Beat the Clock and Tryouts for the Human Race (those sessions were included and featured in Edgar Wright's recent film 'The Sparks Brothers).

In 1980, Clap Hands and Double O One Disco were recorded under the name 'Highway Motion' - intended by Humphrey as "raw experimental tracks" they were both laid down on a 4-track and subsequently released on the DIY Star Records imprint. Rough, grooving, candid and playful; these two tracks seem to somehow simultaneously meld the burgeoning brit-funk sound of the early 80s with a riotous post-punk edge, along with a good dollop of synth-led library music.

Following it's release David formed the group Reflex, recording and releasing the Funny Situation 7" in 1981 - forming the only other title in the Star Records catalogue. A more straight-up brit-funk dancer yet still pressed and sold in small quantities, Funny Situation became a sought-after record on the second hand collector's market, and finally saw reissue last September 2020 on the start-up Paint A Picture label - garnering plays from from Gilles Peterson on BBC 6 Music and Worldwide FM, StreetSounds radio and reaching No 1 in Juno records Chart. David has now started to working on new music using the name Davey H, and released his first new material in decades recently on Six Nine Records.

Aufgenommen in Anjos' Heimstudio in Portland und bei Sessions in L.A., finden sich auf RAC's neuem Album Kollaborationen mit u.a. Rivers Cuomo von Weezer, Vampire Weekends Rostam, MNDR, ST. Lucia, KNA und Joywave. - EGO ist Anjos ambitioniertestes, geschlossenstes und persönlichstes Werk und zeigt deutlich seine organische Weiterentwicklung als Künstler auf. Geboren und aufgewachsen in Portugal, lernte Anjos in seiner Jugend Klavier und Gitarre und spielte in lokalen Bands. Später zog er in die USA, um Musikbusiness am Greenville College in Illinois zu studieren, bevor er sich in Portland, Oregon, niederließ. Anjos gründete RAC im Schlafzimmer seines Studentenwohnheims und gewann fortan ein stetig wachsendes Publikum für sich, wodurch offizielle Remix-Aufträge für u.a. Lana del Rey, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Ellie Goulding, Foster The People, Phoenix, Imagine Dragons, Two Door Cinema Club und The Shins enstanden. Seine erste Grammy-Nominierung erhielt Anjos schon 2016 für seinen Remix von ODESZAs - Say My Name und bei den diesjährigen Verleihungen gewann er mit seinem Remix für Bob Moses' - Tearing Me Up .

Mit seinem ersten Song, - Hollywood , begann RAC 2012 eigenes Material zu veröffentlichen und unterstrich mit seinem Debütalbum - Strangers von 2014 seinen Qualitäten als Songwriter. Singer/Songwriter-Kunst aus UK, prominent mit dabei Paul Weller! In Zusammenarbeit mit Paul Weller als Produzent und Co-Autor seines 5. Studioalbums veröffentlicht der Liverpooler Troubadour Steve Pilgrim das schmerzhaft melancholische ,Beautiful Blue" auf Ltd Vinyl und CD. Auf dem Album wirken Paul Weller, Steve Craddock und Rachael Jean Harris mit Streicherarrangements von Hannah Peel mit. Ein Text von Paul Weller war die einzige Inspiration, die Steve Pilgrim brauchte, um die Arbeit an seinem mit Spannung erwarteten sechsten Album ,Beautiful Blue" zu beenden. Er spielt seit mehr als einem Jahrzehnt Schlagzeug und singt mit der lebenden Legende Paul Weller. Skizzen von Liedern, Melodien und Akkordfolgen wurden der Anfang einer gemeinsamen Schreibrichtung von Pilgrim und Weller und brachten das Material an einen neuen Ort, der den sanftmütigen Scouser auf eine Art und Weise anspornte, die nur Weller hervorrufen konnte. Stücke wie ,Test of Faith", ,Don't Let The Mirror Break You", ,One With All", ,Universe" und ,Where Our Love Goes" erinnern an Pilgrims frühere Arbeiten, sind aber mit einer Wärme und Klassik versehen, die man auf dem gefeierten Album ,True Meanings" seines Co-Autors findet. Mit der Unterstützung des Toningenieurs und Klangzauberers Charles Rees und den Streicherarrangements der renommierten Hannah Peel ist Beautiful Blue" das Werk eines Künstlers, der seine Stärke im Stillleben findet und am lautesten schreit, wenn er flüstert. The four tracks that comprise Giving Water to the Dead were composed using sound materials originally recorded for the sound installation Histories of the Present, a public artwork commissioned by the City of Berkeley in 2019. But where the installation was about a melding of practices and sounds into a single gesture, Crouch and Novak wanted to take the opportunity of a split release to exploring divergent paths starting from common ground. For Giving Water to the Dead, each artist started with the same source material and plotted their own direction without direct influence from the other. As artists in a relationship and sharing a studio this was no easy feat. Despite the planned divergence the resulting tracks compliment each other, as the artists do.

Yann Novak and Robert Takahashi Crouch are a creative and romantic couple living and working in Los Angeles. Their collaborative practice incorporates field recordings, photography, and video as tools to investigate the relationship between site and subject. Their performances and installations have been presented at the AxS Festival, Pasadena; California Museum of Photography, Riverside; Desert Daze Festival, Southern California; Downtown Berkeley BART Plaza, Berkeley; Gays Hate Techno, Northern California; Hammer Museum, Los Angeles; LACMA, Los Angeles; PØST, Los Angeles; Tanya Bonakdar Gallery, New York and others. Their compositions have been published by The Tapeworm, Murmur Records, Estuary Ltd., IO Sound, and Untitled & After.

Zum 50. Jahrestages des Albums erscheint ”Madman Across The Water (50th Anniversary Deluxe Edition) ” in vier verschiedenen Formaten. Alle Formate enthalten Bob Ludwigs definitives Remastering des Hauptalbums von 2016.

SlothBoogie Records welcomes Deep House maestro DJ Aakmael onto its roster this March with ‘The Hardbody Project’ EP, comprised of four original compositions from the Richmond, US-based artist.

Across the past decade and a half DJ Aakmael has unveiled an impressive back catalogue of soul-drenched, dynamic deep house via revered imprints such as Uzuri, Church, Scissor & Thread, Freerange and Second Hand Records amongst many more. Here we see his latest material perfectly interlace with SlothBoogie Records own impressive back catalogue of bumping house and raw deep cuts.

Leading the release is ‘Hardbody’, laid out across seven minutes with chopped brass samples, bright key sequences, modulating Moogesque resonant leads and shuffled drums before ‘Track 166’ shifts focus over to a deeper aesthetic via dubbed out chord swells, organic percussion and twinkling piano melodies.

The aptly named ‘Deepshyt’ opens the flip side, as the name would suggest employing an amalgamation of deep and entrancing synth work, crisp drums and spoken word vocal chants. ‘Strobe’ then rounds out the release with a more disco-tinged House feel, fusing together funk guitar licks, cinematic strings and a snaking bass groove atop Aakmael’s signature swinging rhythmic feel.

Die Band unterschrieb wenig später einen Vertrag bei Viper Records, einem neu gegründeten Sublabel von Attic. »Escape The Fire« sollte ursprünglich der Nachfolger von »Armed And Dangerous« werden, aber Attic hatten ihre eigenen Pläne für die Zukunft von Razor und setzten die unerfahrene Band unter Druck. Als Resultat erschien anstatt »Escape The Fire« letztendlich »Executioner?s Song«. Der originale Bassist Mike Campagnolo erklärt, warum dies der Fall war: ?Wenn man der Realität ins Auge blickt, dann zieht eine junge Band doch immer den Kürzeren, wenn sie den ersten Plattenvertrag unterzeichnet. Das war bei Razor nicht anders. Wir sind ins kalte Wasser gesprungen, aber das galt letztendlich für die Plattenfirma genauso, denn Viper Records war ein völlig neues Unterlabel. Am Ende gab es also auf beiden Seiten nur Verlierer. Das grundsätzliche Problem war, dass Attic einfach nur alles auszuschlachten suchten, was wir veröffentlichten. Sie haben schlicht und ergreifend nicht verstanden, dass die damalige Szene sich gerade neu erfand, schneller und härter wurde. Diese Welle hat das Label komplett verpasst. Attic hatten ein festgefahrenes Schema, wie sie Bands vermarkteten, sie konnten nicht verstehen, dass Thrash Metal kein kurzlebiger Trend war, sondern auf Nachhaltigkeit aufbaute. Diese Kurzsichtigkeit zeigte sich darin, dass sie darauf abzielten, ein paar Stücke von »Armed And Dangerous« noch einmal zu verwerten, um diese Songs mit Material von »Escape The Fire« zu kombinieren. Am Ende wurde daraus »Executioner?s Song«. Wir waren einfach noch zu jung und unerfahren, um dem Label in dieser Frage zu widersprechen.? Die jetzt vorliegende Originalversion von »Escape The Fire« wurde am 1. Dezember 1984 in Torontos Future Sound Studios aufgenommen und von Terry Morostega zusammen mit Dave Carlo produziert.

Die Band unterschrieb wenig später einen Vertrag bei Viper Records, einem neu gegründeten Sublabel von Attic. »Escape The Fire« sollte ursprünglich der Nachfolger von »Armed And Dangerous« werden, aber Attic hatten ihre eigenen Pläne für die Zukunft von Razor und setzten die unerfahrene Band unter Druck. Als Resultat erschien anstatt »Escape The Fire« letztendlich »Executioner?s Song«. Der originale Bassist Mike Campagnolo erklärt, warum dies der Fall war: ?Wenn man der Realität ins Auge blickt, dann zieht eine junge Band doch immer den Kürzeren, wenn sie den ersten Plattenvertrag unterzeichnet. Das war bei Razor nicht anders. Wir sind ins kalte Wasser gesprungen, aber das galt letztendlich für die Plattenfirma genauso, denn Viper Records war ein völlig neues Unterlabel. Am Ende gab es also auf beiden Seiten nur Verlierer. Das grundsätzliche Problem war, dass Attic einfach nur alles auszuschlachten suchten, was wir veröffentlichten. Sie haben schlicht und ergreifend nicht verstanden, dass die damalige Szene sich gerade neu erfand, schneller und härter wurde. Diese Welle hat das Label komplett verpasst. Attic hatten ein festgefahrenes Schema, wie sie Bands vermarkteten, sie konnten nicht verstehen, dass Thrash Metal kein kurzlebiger Trend war, sondern auf Nachhaltigkeit aufbaute. Diese Kurzsichtigkeit zeigte sich darin, dass sie darauf abzielten, ein paar Stücke von »Armed And Dangerous« noch einmal zu verwerten, um diese Songs mit Material von »Escape The Fire« zu kombinieren. Am Ende wurde daraus »Executioner?s Song«. Wir waren einfach noch zu jung und unerfahren, um dem Label in dieser Frage zu widersprechen.? Die jetzt vorliegende Originalversion von »Escape The Fire« wurde am 1. Dezember 1984 in Torontos Future Sound Studios aufgenommen und von Terry Morostega zusammen mit Dave Carlo produziert.

Typically, a band's big indie label debut doesn't come 15 albums into its career, but with Constant Smiles' Paragons, here we are. Primary songwriter and sole "constant" member Ben Jones_who considers Constant Smiles a collective_sees its impressive output as a way to document the group's evolution. Since its live debut as a noise duo on Ben's home of Martha's Vineyard in 2009, Constant Smiles has grown to include contributions from 50 other members, all of whom have personal connections to the group's extended family. And while the collective has indulged an array of musical whims along the way - including Ben's penchant for penning a new set's worth of material for each live performance - Constant Smiles' sound has tightened up considerably over their past couple of albums, in large part as a result of Ben's working relationship with Mike Mackey, who has become his main creative partner. This increased focus manifests on Paragons in the band's most cohesive batch of songs to date, ranging from shimmering psych-pop excursions to bittersweet, piano and string-accented strummers, and an execution that feels like a massive step forward for the band. Through its recent forays into dream pop and shoegaze (Control) and synth-pop (John Waters), Constant Smiles has learned how to incorporate its experimental inclinations more fluidly into the mix. Artists like Yo La Tengo, and the more recent Rat Columns, are good touchstones for Constant Smiles' musical approach - tethering to an indie-pop core while perennially mining genres, always finding new ways to intrigue listeners and pursue a unique vision. Paragons was produced and engineered by Ben Greenberg in the last two weeks of December 2020 at Gary's Electric, with additional recording done by Ben Jones at his home studio, The Void, and his Aunt Leanne's house. The album was mixed at Circular Ruin Studio and mastered by Josh Bonati. The band on Paragons consists of Jai Berger (who performed "Introduction"), Spike Currier (bass and synth), Matthew Addison (drums), Emma Conley (violin), Nicky Wetherell (cello), Adam Lipsky (piano), and Ben Greenberg (guitar and Mellotron).

Founded in 2014 in Berlin by The Oath front woman Johanna Sadonis, the group first consisted of Cathedral, Angel Witch and Ladytron members. The debut album “Lucifer I”, penned by Johanna and Cathedra’s Garry Jennings and released by British label Rise Above Records, brought LUCIFER international recognition. With a shift of constellation within the band in 2016 and Johanna Sadonis’ move from Berlin to Stockholm, LUCIFER were ready for chapter two. In Nicke Andersson, notable for his groups The Hellacopters, Entombed, Imperial State Electric, Death Breath among others, Johanna found a new renowned writing partner. Relentless touring and recording have turned LUCIFER into an explosive live beast and a reliable source of timeless rock and roll.
LUCIFER wasted no time and used the pandemic to record yet another long player that rings in a new chapter and dives even further into the grande realms of colossal old fashioned rock, with a severe morbid twist. For this opus they entered guitarist Linus Björklund’s Studio Ryssviken for an even more heart pounding drum sound while continuing their work at The Honk Palace. They expanded their song writing partnership within the band and Johanna has not only penned the new material with Nicke but also with guitarist Linus, as well as guitarist Martin Nordin contributing. With “Lucifer IV” the group is proving furthermore to be steadily building their very own pillar of rock history, brick by brick. What is the utility of pain? Can it do anything but fester? In Ferneaux explores pain in motion, building audio-spatial chambers of experience and memory. Using an archive of field recordings from a decade of global travels, isolation gave Blanck Mass an opportunity to make connections in a moment when being together is impossible. The record is divided into two long-form journeys that gather the memories of being with now-distant others through the composition of a nostalgic travelogue. The journeys are haunted with the vestiges of voices, places, and sensations. These scenes alternate with the building up and releasing of great aural tension, intensities that emerge from the trauma of a personal grieving process which has perhaps embraced its rage moment. An encounter with a prophetic figure on the streets of San Francisco presented the question of "how to handle the misery on the way to the blessing." This is the quandary of the impasse we now all find ourselves in, trapped in our little caves, grappling with the unease of the self at rest - without movement, without the consumerist agenda of "new experiences." The possibility of growth, always defined by our connections with others, held in limbo. Sartre said that "Hell is other people," but perhaps this is the Inferno of the present: the space of sitting with the self. A blessing is often thought of as a future reward, above and beyond the material plane. With In Ferneaux, Blanck Mass wrangles the immanent materials of the here-and-now to build a sense of transcendence. Here, the uncanny angelic hymn sits comfortably beside the dirge. The misery and blessing are one.
