Soul Jazz Records’ feature-length documentary/CD/Book ‘Studio One Story’ is being re-released on 1 August 2011, and is also available for the first time as a stand alone DVD. The DVD is being issued as a prelude to the forthcoming deluxe-hardback book ‘Original Cover Art of Studio One Records’ released this autumn by Soul Jazz Records as well as a new Studio One album compilation on Soul Jazz to coincide with the new book.

Studio One Story is a documentary this is both a staggering slice of musical history and a definitive guide to Studio One, Jamaica’s greatest ever record company, and its legendary founder, Clement ‘Coxsone’ Dodd. ‘Studio One Story’ was filmed in 2002, two years before the death of the legendary Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd, a man famously reticent of being interviewed - until the making of this film. Described by Chris Blackwell as the Motown of Jamaica, or ‘The University of Reggae’, Studio One is where the careers of literally hundreds of reggae artists began: Bob Marley and the Wailers, Alton Ellis, The Heptones, Ken Boothe, The Skatalites, Burning Spear and Sugar Minott, to name but a few! Studio One is the ‘foundation’ label of Jamaican Reggae and Clement ‘Sir Coxsone’ Dodd is seen by many as its father.

One and a half years in the making, Studio One Story is a truly unique documentary in which the late Clement Dodd gave unprecedented personal access to tell the previously untold story of how he and the many artists and musicians at Studio One literally shaped the rise of Reggae music from the 1950s onwards through to the late 1970s. This is the true story of reggae music and its Jamaican roots told from the inside: From the rise of Kington’s sound systems in the 1940s and 1950s, through to the evolution of a Jamaican music industry (and Studio One’s dominance) in the 1960s and the worldwide success of reggae in the 1970s.

The 4 hour documentary (including over an hour of extras) was filmed on location in Kingston, Jamaica and features interviews with Horace Andy, Alton Ellis, Ken Boothe, Sugar Minott, Denis Alcapone, The Ethiopians, Sylvan Morris, Johnny Moore, Lone Ranger, King Stitt and many others. The DVD also includes rare footage of The Skatalites, Jackie Mittoo, Count Ossie, Marcia Griffiths and others. Soul Jazz Records’ new 10th anniversary edition of their long-out-of-print Punk 45: There Is No Such Thing As Society. Anyone who takes their old-skool hip-hop seriously knows Main Source were the real deal, and their 1991 album Breaking Atoms remains one of the greatest albums in the genre. While there was an eventual follow-up in 1994, hip-hop folklore has often spoken of their shelved 1992 LP The Science.

As one of the first Black women to write, arrange, and produce her own albums, Betty was a visionary who disregarded industry boundaries and constraints. Raw, unapologetic, and in full control, Betty paved the way for generations of future artists who said 'funk you' to the music industry and social norms. In 1975, Betty Davis's star was on the rise. With the backing of Island Records and a new band, Funk House, Betty's third album, Nasty Gal, leans into the hyper-sexualized persona with which her critics were so obsessed. She raps, purrs, shrieks, and moans on top of Funk House's manic funk-rock and lays claim to the "bad girl" anthems that now saturate the music industry. Mastered from the original tapes, Nasty Gal showcases Betty's groundbreaking work as a performer, writer, and producer.

What can you say about the bass playing (and way more) legend that is Ade Shaw? During a long and mind-altering career, Ade has played with many outfits, most notably psych warlords Hawkwind, for whom he provided his trademark basslines for several years in the mid 70s. He has also played with Atomic Rooster (albeit briefly), Magic Muscle, Rustic Hinge, The Hawklords, Keith Christmas, Mike Moorcock’s Deep Fix and many more. More recently, (well, the last 30 years actually!) he has been the bass player in The Bevis Frond. For the last year or two, however, he has had to stand down from touring and gigging for personal reasons, but happily this has not prevented him from recording a new album. So it is with great pride and delight that we are now able to release ‘A Dark Reflection’ on Blue Matter. Eleven brand Adrian Shaw new songs ranging from out and out psychedelia, through rock to even a splash of lilting balladry. With Ade playing all the instruments bar a couple of guest appearances from Nick Saloman & Bari Watts, this is the Ade Shaw album we’ve all been waiting for. Kick starting 2024 with intent, Berlin’s Pure Hate Trax starts the year in style with a pure power 4 track EP by Tripped. Hailing from Belgium, Francis Jaques started his journey at the tender age of 15 and quickly become A key figure in the underground rave & hardcore scene and up to now has celebrated over two decades of relentless dedication to the industry. While deeply rooted in Hardcore Techno, Tripped style is not limited to a certain genre. Always staying true to his gut, he keeps innovating his sound by using both analog and digital techniques, often with a wink to the pure and raw sound of the 90’s, dark, moody and kick-drum heavy. His label Madback Records, an outlet for his own productions has also seen contributions from the likes of Slave To Society, The Outside Agency, KRTM, Waldhaus, Mickey Nox and Umwelt. Aside from the music he also creates abstract paintings and mixes graphic design to showcase a truly unique collaboration of both artwork and music. As a DJ Francis is considered one of the most diverse acts from Belgium. His raw and powerful sets range from Rave, Techno, Industrial, Acid to Gabber and Old School Terror has seen him perform all over the world and at major events such as Thunderdome, Masters Of Hardcore, Tomorrowland, Bangface, Defqon.1, Kompass Klub, Dominator, Astropolis, Decibel and many more.

Felix Machtelinckx is a singer, composer, producer and lyricist from Belgium. Featuring an array of film scores, dance soundtracks, pop, folk and electronic music, Felix's music resonates with a familiar, almost nostalgic patina, applied with a distinctly crooked touch. Through artistic collaboration, coaching and production, Felix has cut a dash in the pop and indie cult scenes of Belgium, especially with his band Tin Fingers, who are feted as one of the most promising indie acts of the moment. Night Scenes, Felix’s solo debut is, in contrast to his other work, more humble and less traditional, roughly hewn from a series of ambient soundscapes, earthy textures and playful structures. Felix’s voice, normally the flagship of his music, becomes more of a distant memory, an indistinct emotion feathered throughout the music. Many lyrics are improvised, sometimes unintelligible, conjuring haunted, uncertain undertones. Similarly, the album is innately peripatetic to the core, being created, written and recorded in Lithuania, Belgium, France, mastered in the US, and finally released in the UK. In the first instance, some of the tracks were created for the contemporary dance piece Doggy Rugburn by Brandon Lagaert of Kaiho and Peeping Tom; others were created enigmatically for a film that never surfaced; while the remainder are the product of more personal work and research. As Felix began to collect and review these disparate parts, the concept of a unified album began to evolve. With 'night' featuring as a suitably dark leitmotif, or backdrop to a series of emotionally fraught 'scenes', each track depicts a form of trauma, locked within the confines of the mind. Felix observes: "Imagine yourself in a dusty old room unable to sleep. Emotions, fears and other demons haunt your mind. This in-between state makes your mind reach for other worlds. This is Night Scenes." For the most part, Night Scenes was created using a variety of old, and rare, analogue equipment. With almost no digital editing, the record was primarily mixed through a vintage cassette desk, giving it a nostalgic character with a noisy undertone. Felix fully embraced the synergy of his emotional themes and retrograde gear, enthusing: "A lot of textures were created on an old Soviet synthesizer that causes a blackout when you hit the lowest note on the keyboard. The dysfunctionality of the synths was often used to create rhythm and texture." This unnerving ability Night Scenes has to comfort and confound the listener is summed up by Jordan Hudson, House Of Media producer, and music podcaster, when he concludes: "Some songs on the album have this sort of fleeting comfort and tonality, which dissolves into a subtle rhythmic/structural or modulated disarray the moment I settle into them - this really fits with my experience of the night .. This record is a winner, and will be something I'll listen to a lot from here on

Autumn 1904 is a post-punk indie-rock band formed in 1982 in Edinburgh, Scotland by Allan Dumbreck (keyboards) and Ross Thom (guitar). The band originally became a five-piece (Billy Bowie – bass, Keith Falconer – drums, Billy Leslie – vocals) but grew to a seven piece in early 1983 (taking on two female backing vocalists, Indira Sharma and Lisa Cameron). Autumn 1904 were part of the DIY indie-rock movement in Edinburgh in the early to mid 1980’s kicked off by The Shop Assistants, they worked alongside The Wild Indians, Finitribe (originally Gallery Macabre) and Goodbye Mr MacKenzie, often performing together or attending each other’s shows.

In February 1984 the band performed at the John Peel Roadshow at Edinburgh University and afterwards were invited to record a BBC Radio 1 session which was broadcast three times on the Peel show. They were immediately courted by 11 major record and publishing companies. In March 1984 their song “I heard Catherine Sing” featured on the Deadbeat magazine compilation album “Deadbeat 1”. Internal tensions and health issues over the summer of 1984 held up development and caused Sharma and Cameron to leave the band.

The band first split in January 1985 with Thom, Bowie and Falconer going on to form The Crows with former members of First Priority, including future Glasgow Cathouse / Garage promoter Donald McLeod MBE. Dumbreck and Leslie reformed the band and performed throughout 1985 sometimes including Shirley Manson, then working with Goodbye Mr MacKenzie and later with Garbage. This line-up lasted until November 1985 when the band split again. Dumbreck went on to work with Scottish groups The Big Dish, Horse and Thrum. Later working extensively in music education setting up the music department at UWS where Jim Prime (Deacon Blue) and Paul McGeechan (Love and Money) became lecturing staff.

The line-up at the time of the Peel session was Dumbreck, Thom, Bowie, Falconer, Leslie and backing vocalists Indira Sharma and Lisa Cameron.

In May 2021, the original five members agreed to re-master / re-record the original material from their studio recordings for release. Work began with producer Liam McCluskey (Gun, King King, Twin Atlantic). Approaching Ian Smith in 2022 at independent record label Last Night from Glasgow for advice, he offered to release the album on the label. The final masters include Tippi from label-mates The Hedrons on vocals and a number of fresh recordings of material written in 1982-83 but never previously recorded.

London band Those Unfortunates release their second album, Welcome to Woodberry Down, on October 27th through Gare Du Nord Records, on LP accompanied by a limited edition photobook.
Welcome to Woodberry Down is a collection of songs about the eponymous housing estate in the London Borough of Hackney. Singer/lyricist Ben Brill’s family were among Woodberry Down’s first residents in 1950. Dubbed the estate of the future, and built on land that had previously been the preserve of the wealthy, Woodberry Down’s social homes were emblematic of a new post war optimism.
Brill’s family called Woodberry Down home for over 50 years, eventually seeing the estate fall into managed decline. Not long after his grandmother’s death in 2006, the bulldozers moved in, and the foundations were laid for a new, privately owned housing development.
Brill started work on this project in 2016. At the time a Hackney resident, he spent countless early mornings walking round the condemned – but still not quite empty - estate, and watching a new version of the future rise in its place. He took photographs, and started writing songs, inspired equally by the liminal spaces he explored, and the utopian ideals of the London County Council planners.

The band will be celebrating the album’s launch with friend Paolo Ruiu at Margate’s Tom Thumb Theatre on October 27th, and London’s Betsey Trotwood on October 28th.

Nasti, the people’s favorite, is back with their third album of misanthropic hardcore punk. Sure to delight the senses of the senseless with thudding violence and irritated vitriol. It is the band’s opinion that humans are mostly garbage and this record reflects that sentiment wholeheartedly. “People Problem” is musical equivalent of Jack Nicholson in The Shining methodically/maniacally typing: I don’t like you. Following on from their contribution to theButter SessionsCome Togethercompilation released in March this year, Melbourne'sPolitodeliver their debut EPUltraparallel.Politois the collaboration between musicians Robert Downie and Finnian Langham and dancers Arabella Frahn-Starkieand Hillary Goldsmith. The ensemble integrates improvised techno and contemporary dance to form well-considered and captivating performances. The spirit of these performances are masterfully captured on the 12" record. On the transition between mediums, the group states; "we always aim to capture the unpredictability and liveliness of our improvised performances when we record, and try to sculpt the feeling of continuous movement which is so intrinsically tied to Polito's identity."

Ultraparallelconsists of four tracks that were extracted from studio sessions, emerging organically whilst jamming. The EP's introductionHornet's Webwields mutilated samples of vocals and spoken word, paired with abrupt rhythms to forge anomalous techno. The eponymous trackUltraparallel, recorded in 2018, is a dark and brooding arrangement with a murmuring melody and an infectious recurring bassline. Polito reflects; "this track is from the first batch of studio sessions we had as Polito where our intention was to create more discrete 'tracks' which could be played by DJs, rather than the longform compositions more similar to the live performances which we had recorded up to that point."

Turning the record over,Seventh Limbembodies the music for dance nuance by infusing dub with sounds from outer-space. Polito reveals; "we wanted to explore creating something more in line with the mood of our live performances, which are typically slower and have a rather meditative atmosphere. The more relaxed tempo allows the dancers to move at a sustainable pace and gives the musicians more space to prepare and manipulate the various musical elements in real-time. The result is our first formal exploration of 'the chugger.'"Ultraparallel'sfinaleSublunaryis a playful sequence mingling electronics with an airy clarinet and saxophone.

Attuned to their audience,Politoimagines how their music will be consumed throughout the creative process. They comment "while making music in the studio, we try to transport ourselves mentally to hypothetical dancefloors the music we're making could be played on, adding moments and sounds which would excite, energise, disorient, or have some other desired somatic effect. We're also considering not just how the music sounds, but how it would 'feel' when played on large sound systems."Ultraparallelultimatelypresents a refreshing visual take on literal dance music; a considered and holistic approach to enhancing the experience of listening and moving.

Reggae and Jamaican music have long embraced a symbiotic relationship with the movies. Rooting back to the island's golden era, countless arrangements have either been direct covers, or inspired by, the musicality and mood found in both cinema and television. These reinterpretations would become part of the backbone of the instrumental sound that accompanied the Jamaican record industry's acceleration from the mid-60s and beyond. Talented young musicians, rising from Alpha Boys School and the early studios of Coxsone, Duke Reid and others, found a showcase for their unique playing style on hundreds of different recordings, while appealing to the country's own love affair with Westerns, James Bond canon, and other rebellious themes and motifs that were projected from Hollywood during this time.

In this same tradition, in a new interval, arrives the debut release of Anant Pradhan and Larry McDonald, the latter a master percussionist with direct participation in some of Jamaica's earliest recordings. McDonald, although often uncredited, was a legitimate influence in helping to bridge the Afro-Caribbean sound from calypso into ska and later reggae with his iconic style on hand drums and percussion. A kindred spirit of McDonald, despite 50 years separating them, Anant Pradhan is a bonafide member of the next generation. Although this is his first "solo" record, the talented saxophonist has already played on dozens of incredible sessions for the likes of Victor Axelrod, The Inversions, Andy Bassford, Channel Tubes, Ralph Weeks and Combo Lulo. As an official member of the current touring group of the legendary Skatalites, Pradhan has honed his musicianship under some of the greats of reggae music. His particular soulful, instrumental arrangements are an homage to that influential era of Jamaican music. Pradhan and his band's performance retain the skill and innovation of the old vanguard, and like the generations before, capture a magic that may only be possible when cinema goes reggae.

A cult favorite from A Nightmare Before Christmas, Danny Elfman's "Sally's Song" was immortalized in Tim Burton's 1993 classic stop-motion film. It's immediately recognizable in all its haunting charm, and now, Pradhan and McDonald have managed to transform it into an irrefutable reggae classic, reinvented with its melancholic lead sax and bombastic percussion. The prolific Henry Mancini is already entrenched in the Jamaican canon, yet nobody has knowingly attempted to recreate one of his most magical numbers, "Meglio Stasera" aka "It Had Better Be Tonight," that of the riveting one-take scene in 1963's The Pink Panther. The galloping percussion of the original is transposed through a cloud of smoke, slow and low in a roots style at the hands of McDonald. Pradhan's sax leads the way over the locked-in rhythm section, both deep and cheeky all at once. These first two productions of Anant Pradhan and Larry McDonald are a deserving entry into the canon of reggae covers, and are equally adept to be heard on the screen and or at the dance alike.

The realm of the hippies stretches between “Nature Boy”, Eden Ahbez’s international hit song from 1948, and Charles Manson’s “Trial Testimony” from 1970. NATURE BOY by Raymond Pettibon & Oliver Augst is a romantic-anarchistic search for the sources of punk. A must for all Pettibon fans.

The duo previously had a release from ESP institute and each of them countless solo appearance on various releases . . .

Nonetheless, they a good long time friend and perfect fit for this release.

The duo features comfy calming ear tickling electronic sound with some kiddish, animalistic, or primitive humor in their own balance. This track Presence grooves with a leaning forward racing gamey phrase drifting around the mini synth explosion, feels like a joyful cruise during regardless the intense highway.

A cycle of songs about dead dogs. Dealing with loss, grief and loneliness, they recount the tales of lost dogs both real, metaphoric and mythic, and use our relationship with and treatment of dogs as a measure of our humanity.

Collaborating as The Unattached on this record are Joad R Wren, sister Gwenifer Raymond, uncle Neil White, and daughter Celia, along with friends Darren Hayman, Ian Button, John McGrath and Holly Rogers.

Joad notes: "The album was written and recorded during the height of the pandemic. I've no idea why it's taken so long to release it. I do know that it's a great pleasure to work – even at a distance – with such talented musicians, with many amazing albums in their back catalogues."

The final song was a surprise – especially to Joad – as Neil wrote it years ago about a forgotten dog, and it fitted beautifully as a coda here.

The songs are at once lush, sensitive, bleak and unflinching - there's a similar feeling to something like Lou Reed's 'Berlin', or the darker moments of Roy Harper. The LP comes in a numbered, hand-printed linocut sleeve with a 20 page booklet of lyrics and art.

The sleeve is a bit special. The oil-based ink used on this hand-printed sleeve may feel sticky to touch, and can potentially transfer to other surfaces. Please handle and store this record carefully.

It's an edition of 100, and because of the hand-printing process each cover is imperfectly unique and uniquely imperfect (and hand numbered).

For more than 30 years, singer-songwriter and guitar hero Mary Timony has cut a distinctive path through the world of independent music, most recently as vocalist and guitarist of acclaimed garage-pop power trio Ex Hex (Merge) but also as a member of seminal postpunk band Autoclave (Dischord), celebrated leader of the deeply influential Helium (Matador), multifaceted solo artist (Matador, Lookout!, Kill Rock Stars), and a co-founder of supergroup Wild Flag (Merge). Described by Sleater-Kinney's Carrie Brownstein as "Mary Shelley with a guitar" and dubbed "a trailblazer and an innovator" by Lindsey Jordan a.k.a. Snail Mail, Timony has distinguished herself as one of her generation's most influential. Although she has remained a cult hero and critical favorite since the early '90s, Timony's many triumphs have long been counterbalanced by crippling doubt and self-nullification. Her fifth solo album, Untame the Tiger, approaches these emotions head on. Her first solo release in 15 years is a startling document of an artist fully coming into her own power during the fourth decade of her career. It is the product of lessons learned during life-altering struggle. The mystical, acoustic-driven Untame the Tiger emerged after the dissolution of a long-term relationship and was bookended by the deaths of Timony's father and mother. The album was recorded during a two-year period during which she was the primary caregiver for her ailing parents. The tectonic psychic shift Mary experienced due to this loss informs many of her lyrics. Standout track "No Thirds" "is a song about losing everything and having to keep on going," says Timony. "I wanted the verses to sound like a wide-open barren space, like driving across a desert, because that is what the song is about - losing people and the feeling that your future is a giant, wide-open blank space." The stripped-back acoustic instrumentation of "The Guest" conjures Sweetheart-era Byrds. Timony describes it as a song sung directly to loneliness: "I was imagining loneliness as a house guest who keeps knocking on your door. I thought it would be funny to say loneliness is the only one who always comes back." Untame the Tiger does not eschew Timony's guitar hero reputation; in fact, "Summer" relishes in it, a straight-up banger that you'd be half tempted to call "no frills" until its initial garage rock stomp breaks into the unexpected bliss of a twin guitar solo conclusion. "I wanted the recording to have the energy of the Kinks, early Dio and Elf, or Rory Gallagher," she explains. "I was also listening to a lot of Gerry Rafferty's first solo album and was inspired to have two simultaneous guitar solos." Untame the Tiger picks up the thread woven through Timony's freak-folk-anticipating solo albums of the early '00s. Basic tracks were recorded at Studio 606 in Los Angeles, with Timony backed by Dave Mattacks, drummer of legendary British folk-rock band Fairport Convention. "Mattacks is a hero of mine and one of my favorite musicians of all time. He is a true legend. I never in a million years thought he'd agree to play on my record," says Timony. "Before the session, I had a panic attack and had to go sit alone in the parking lot_ Once we started playing together, it felt so great that the fear subsided and turned into excitement. Die Versuchung, Bill Fay zu mythologisieren, kann überwältigend sein. Sein Status als unbesungener Held hat sich langsam, aber stetig, über fünfundzwanzig Jahre hinweg entwickelt und mit jedem neuen Album kommen Fans hinzu, darunter prominente Musiker wie Jeff Tweedy, Kevin Morby, Adam Granduciel und Julia Jacklin, um nur einige zu nennen. Fay war jahrzehntelang ebenso produktiv wie unterschätzt, innerhalb seines Katalogs ist die Bill Fay Group seine bedeutendste Zusammenarbeit. Nach seinem selbstbetitelten Debüt Bill Fay (1970) und dem Klassiker "Time of the Last Persecution" (1971) hatte Decca Records kein Interesse ein drittes Album zu veröffentlichen. Bill Stratton, Gary Smith, Rauf Galip formierten sich mit Fay zur Bill Fay Group und nahmen zwischen 1978 und 1981 in mehreren Sessions, trotz minimaler finanzieller Mittel, ein brillantes Album auf. Die Bandmitglieder beschwören ein elegantes Gegengewicht zu seinem Gespür für das Unauffällige. "Tomorrow Tomorrow and Tomorrow" bringt die galaktischen Qualitäten des frühen Rock, die Komplexität der Jazz-Improvisation und Fays erdigen Folk-Zauber zusammen. Zur Zeit der Fertigstellung fand sich aber leider kein Label für das Projekt. Erst 2005 brachte David Tibet auf seinem Label Durtro Records eine unvollständige, nur auf CD erhältliche Version heraus. Eine Neuauflage von 2006 machte das Album auf Vinyl erhältlich, allerdings mit stark gekürztem Tracklisting, es fehlten neun Songs. Jetzt endlich erscheint Tomorrow Tomorrow and Tomorrow weltweit in voller Länge. Es enthält die 22 Original-Songs des Albums, dazu 6 Bonustracks, sowie seltene und bisher unveröffentlichte Fotos von den ursprünglichen Aufnahmesessions von "Tomorrow Tomorrow and Tomorrow".

Die Wiener Samsara Joyride mit ihrem zweitem Longplayer, dem ersten auf Tonzonen. Von Beginn an stand für die Band eine Fusion des klassischen Rocksounds der 70er und 90er Jahre im Mittelpunkt, dabei bewegt sich die Band stilistisch frei zwischen Blues-, Psych- und Stoner-Rock. Eingängige, hypnotisierende Riffs, durchsetzt mit euphorisierenden Gitarrensoli und markanten Bariton-Vocals bestimmen die Songs - ein Spiel zwischen Altbewährtem und Experimentellem, zwischen Wiederholungen und Wendungen. 2023 wurden sieben neue Tracks geschmiedet, die zwar noch erkennbar im Stil des Debütalbums gegründet sind, sich aber in Sachen Komplexität und Experimentierfreude deutlich abheben. "The Subtle And The Dense" tritt schon vom ersten Ton an nicht nur deutlich heavier und progressiver, sondern vor allem selbstbewusster auf. Es wurde deutlich mutiger mit dem Einsatz von Hintergrundstimmen und Gesangsharmonien experimentiert. Leadgitarrist Michael Haumer übernimmt den größten Teil des Background-Gesangs, wobei sein kräftiger Tenor Miehes dunklen Bariton perfekt ergänzt. Aber auch Laura Fichtenkamms klare und weiche Frauenstimme bildet einen harmonischen Kontrast zur Hauptstimme. Verglichen mit dem ersten Album ist der Gitarrensound von Miehe und Haumer gleichzeitig subtiler und dichter. Wo früher noch live improvisiert wurden, finden sich heute fast ausschließllich in akribischer Kleinarbeit ausgearbeitete Lead-Gitarren-Parts, die mühelos zwischen Blues-, Metal und Stonerrock wechseln. Andreas Mittermühlners mal peitschenden, mal wuchtig stampfenden, immer jedoch punktgenauen Drums und Daniel Batliners vibrierend-groovender, alles andere als im Hintergrund stehender Bass, bilden gemeinsam das Rückgrat und den Puls der Platte, und bieten so den schneidenden Höhen von Haumers Sologitarre Fundament und Rahmen zur Entfaltung. Daraus ergibt sich ein großes Ganzes, das manchmal nach Kyuss, manchmal nach Danzig oder Black Sabbath, manchmal sogar noch Tool oder All Them Witches klingt, immer aber nach Samsara Joyride und als Gesamtwerk weit über die Summe seiner Teile hinauswächst.

Suburban Architecture are pleased to announce the third in their 'Architecture Dubs' series of limited edition 10" vinyl releases, which sees some of the most revered names active during the mid 90s golden era of Drum & Bass deliver remixes of Suburban Architecture material in homage to that most innovative of periods.

Following on from the now sold out release of Architecture Dub #001 (featuring remixes from Peshay and DJ Trax), and #002 (featuring Blame and DJ Trace), edition #003 features remixes from two further legends in the scene, Nookie and DJ Crystl.

Nookie needs little introduction. From early 90s Hardcore through to present day heavy hitters via a string of mid 90s classics, Nookie has had an enviable career in the genre. Having recorded for seminal labels that heavily influenced the Suburban Architecture sound: Reinforced, Moving Shadow and Good Looking, Nookie was an obvious choice for this remix package. On this release he takes 2021's 'Renegade Horns' to more dancefloor oriented territory with an energetic roller that marries classic drum breaks with a contemporary production feel.

DJ Crystl is also a name with a storied history in Drum & Bass. Also releasing music since the early 90s, Crystl has seen releases on influential labels, Lucky Spin, Dee Jay Recordings, Moving Shadow and iconic US Hip Hop imprint Payday. Crystl's remix of 2020 Suburban Architecture cut 'New Horizons' carries classic 1994 flavour, delivering an extended, Amen-laced rework of the original, full of classic Intelligent sonics.

Pressed on 10" vinyl and housed in brown Kraft paper sleeves, the series makes visual reference to the exclusive dubplate pressings which introduced so many classic cuts to the UK's dancefloors in the 90s.

Und obendrauf so schöne Wohlfühl-Remixe: von der Lichtgestalt Erobique, der kürzlich in Mitteleuropa Charthits hatte, der früher mit Koze bei International Pony war, der so fantastische Musik für die "Tatortreiniger"-Fernsehserie (mit Bjarne Mädel) geschrieben hat und gerade ausverkaufte Live-Shows in ganz Deutschland und Österreich feierte. Auch Freestyle Man, vielleicht besser bekannt als Sasse, der uns so viele gute Deep-Squirky-House-Perlen beschert hat und Ale Castro, die beide hier erstklassige Remixe abliefern. Last but not least der österreichische Crooner Louie Austen, der uns mit seiner magischen Stimme auf "Smile" ein Lächeln ins Gesicht zaubert.

In O.D.O.O. singt Fela über die Auswirkungen der militärischen Machtübernahme und die Zerstörung der jungen afrikanischen Demokratien seit der Unabhängigkeit - insbesondere der jungen Demokratien, die nach langen Auseinandersetzungen und manchmal sogar Kriegen mit den Kolonialmächten ihre Unabhängigkeit erkämpft und gewonnen haben. Er sagte, dass Putschisten, wenn sie an die Macht kommen, Namen annehmen wie: Nigerianischer Oberster Militärrat, Ghanaischer Erlösungsrat, Libyscher Revolutionär usw. In den meisten Fällen wurden die Putschversuche von den ehemaligen Kolonialmächten geplant und finanziert. Für diejenigen, die sich dessen nicht bewusst sind, schafft die Präsenz des Militärs auf der politischen Bühne die Illusion einer friedlichen "demokratischen" Partizipation und einer funktionierenden Regierung. Zumal der größte Teil der täglichen Regierungsarbeit von Zivilisten geleistet wird, die den Militärchefs unterstehen. Für Fela besteht die Aufgabe der Streitkräfte unter normalen Umständen darin, die zivile Regierung zu verteidigen und zu unterstützen, und nicht darin, sie zu stürzen oder die Aufgaben eines Regierungszweiges an sich zu reißen, weil sie kein politisches Mandat haben. Das Gegenteil zu tun - das bedeutet "überholen". Jede Vorstellung von einem wohlhabenden und friedlichen Land, in dem das Militär an der Spitze der Macht steht, ist eine Illusion.

Die anhaltenden Skandale und die Korruption auf höchster Ebene, die alle Regime seit der Unabhängigkeit kennzeichnen, tragen dazu bei, Felas Desillusionierung und sein Misstrauen gegenüber dem Militär ins rechte Licht zu rücken. Er weist auf die Zweideutigkeit hin, daß die Verfassungen der neuen unabhängigen afrikanischen Nationen an die Verfassungen der scheidenden Kolonialherren angelehnt sind. Identifiziert das als Ursache der Probleme. In seiner sarkastischen Art bezeichnet Fela das, was in Afrika als Regierung durchgeht, als: '…soldier go! Soldier come!' Damit meint er, dass die Institution, die die militärische Struktur geschaffen hat, die Armee absichtlich dorthin gebracht hat, um ihr koloniales Werk fortzusetzen. Um die Not der Afrikaner unter einer solchen Diktatur deutlich zu machen, führt Fela eine Liste von Liedern an, die er geschrieben hat und in denen er die Ungerechtigkeiten des Systems kritisiert: Kalakuta Show! Mr. Follow-Follow! Zombie! Shuffering und Shmiling! Leider sind es die armen Massen, die am meisten unter der Misswirtschaft und Korruption der Regierung leiden. Von klein auf müssen afrikanische Kinder lernen, wie man in einem System überlebt, in dem man nicht weiß, woher die nächste Mahlzeit kommt - keine soziale Sicherheit, keine Bildung etc.

Trotz all dieser Rückschläge versuchen die Afrikaner weiterhin, ihre Kinder zu erziehen. Die Kinder wachsen auf, nehmen feste Jobs an, um ihr Leben zu verbessern, sparen hier und dort, um zu überleben. Letzten Endes jedoch machen die Ereignisse der Misswirtschaft verschiedener Verwaltungen alle Opfer und Abstriche, die der Einzelne zur Verbesserung seines Lebens macht, nutzlos.

Since 2015, Berlin’s Cuntroaches have defiled countless venues across Europe and the UK, playing festivals and touring relentlessly. When Mick Mars stepped back from touring with Motley Crue - the band he co-founded more than 40 years ago - following their massive summer 2022 Stadium Tour, it seemed like the end of an era.

It was really the beginning of a new one...

The legendary guitarist, whose riffs, solos and overall devastatingly heavy sound powered the L.A. icons through four decades of world-conquering, multi-platinum sonic mayhem is, as he demonstrates on his debut solo effort, still a serious force to be reckoned with. Only now, listeners are reckoning with more Mars than ever before. "When it comes to my playing, there's the Motley side and the Mars side," the guitarist says. "Either way, I always have a very clear vision of what I want to do."

On the aptly- titled 'The Other Side of Mars', fans get that vision in its full, multifarious glory. To be sure, there are plenty of characteristically riff- tastic, tough-as-nails hard-rock anthems (the rampaging "Loyal to the Lie," the deep-in- the-pocket groove-rocker "Ain't Going Back," the hooky and melodic "Right Side of Wrong") to be heard on the record. But 'The Other Side of Mars' also shows the 71- year- old guitarist heading into new and uncharted territory, tearing through caustic, modern metal ("Broken On the Inside"), conjuring gothic- tinged soundscapes ("Undone"), digging into anguished, slow- burning power balladry ("Killing Breed") and unspooling bluesy, cinematic instrumental workouts (the album- closing guitar showcase, "L.A. Fela sagt, dass es für solche Menschen noch Hoffnung gibt, wenn sie ihre Denkweise an ihre Umgebung anpassen. '…them miss road! Them find road again oh!'. Jene sozialen Aufsteiger, die den Status quo und die Tatsache, dass sie in die Fußstapfen der ehemaligen Kolonialverwalter getreten sind, als Zeichen ihres sozialen Aufstiegs sehen. Sie vergessen, dass die Mehrheit ihres Volkes immer noch in den Ghettos kämpft. Diese Menschen müssen erkennen, dass es ihnen schlechter geht als einem Blinden, der am Ufer eines Flusses lebt. Sie werden fallen: "shallow" into more 'Ikoyi mental' Blindness.

Gba Mi Leti Ki N'Dolowo (Schlag mich, damit ich Geld bekomme): Das Jahr 1974 war ein Wendepunkt für das Justizsystem, das sich die Durchsetzung des Rechts auf die Fahnen geschrieben hatte. Vor allem in einem Land, in dem die Reichen die Armen ungestraft ausbeuteten. Eine Reihe von Prozessen, an denen Menschen aus den unteren Schichten der Gesellschaft gegen die Oberschicht und einflussreiche Männer beteiligt waren, führte dazu, dass die Reichen ihren armen Anklägern hohe Entschädigungssummen zahlen mussten. Fela sang darüber und betonte, dass man niemanden ausnutzen und damit davonkommen kann. Wenn du mich schlägst, bekomme ich Geld. Solange ich mich selbst respektiere, werde ich meine Grenzen nicht überschreiten - wenn du mich schlägst, wirst du bezahlen.
