Celebrating 30 years of the legendary label, we pick legendary bombs and unreleased gems from Black Vinyl Records rich catalogue. From its inception back in 1996 Black Vinyl Records has always been a label for the serious DJs. Everything Is Recorded, ist das musikalische Kollaborationsprojekt von XL-Recordings Chef Richard Russell. Auf dem Album "Temporary" sind zu hören u.a. Sampha, Bill Callahan, Noah Cyrus, Florence Welch, Maddy Prior, Berwyn, Alabaster Deplume, Jah Wobble, Yazz Ahmed, Laura Groves, Kamasi Washington, Ricky Washington, Roses Gabor, Jack Penate, Samantha Morton, Clari Freeman-Taylor und Nourished By Time. "Temporary" entstand im Verlauf von vier Jahren in Russells Londoner Copper House Studio und während einiger zusätzlicher Sessions in Tottenham, Cumbria, Dorset, Los Angeles und Las Vegas Es schließt an die vorangegangenen Releases wie das 2018 für den Mercury Prize nominierte Debüt an. Auf dem neuen Album erfährt Russells musikalische DNA allerdings ein Reboot: Sein Cut & Paste Approach reicht in die Zeit vor Sampling-Helden wie The Bomb Squad und Prince Paul zurück bis hin zu Innovatoren wie Steve Reich, Robert Rauschenberg und William S. Burroughs. Während Russells Musik bislang geprägt war von Rhythmus, Worten und Melodie - in ebendieser Reihenfolge - tauschen zwei Aspekte diesmal ihre Rollen. Der Rhythmus tritt zugunsten der Melodie in den Hintergrund. Musikalisch ist "Temporary" vom Gedankenexperiment "what if folk music had "gone digital" in the 80s, just as reggae had?" geleitet, während sich in spiritueller und lyrischer Hinsicht vieles um Trauer und den Verlust von Freunden, Familienmitgliedern und Kollegen dreht. Im Ergebnis stehen leuchtende und gelassene Kompositionen, auch dank der faszinierenden und vielfältigen Gästeliste, die "Temporary" mitbringt. Die fragilen, zärtlichen und stillen Tracks liefern vielleicht eines der sanftesten Alben, die je über den Tod geschrieben wurden. "Das Album zu machen, war erfüllend, eine Art, das Leben zu heiligen", so Russell. "Temporary" ist die erste reguläre Veröffentlichung von Everything Is Recorded nach über vier Jahren. In der Zwischenzeit war Russell allerdings nicht untätig. Via Soundcloud und Bandcamp erschienen zuletzt "Summer Solstice", "Autumn Equinox", "Winter Solstice" und "Spring Equinox", die alle mit einer Reihe von Gastmusikerinnen und -.musikern im Rahmen ausgiebiger Jams an jeweils nur einem Tag entstanden. Mit der Schauspielerin und Regisseurin Samantha Morton tat er sich zum Duo Sam Morton zusammen, welches sein Debüt "Daffodils und Dirt" veröffentlichte. Für Peter Gabriels Comeback-Album "i/o" produzierte Russell den Song "Four Kinds of Horses".

Mellow Drunk led by Leigh Gregory on vocals and guitar with co-founding member of The Brian Jonestown Massacre, Ricky Maymi and Stephen Scott Cavoretto (ex-Dora Flood). Mellow Drunk quickly established themselves as "purveyors of finely arranged melodic pop songs", as well as becoming favourites on the West Coast club circuit. Supergrass, Luna, trashcan sinatras, The Church, The Clientele, The Morning After Girls, LILYSand Gorky's Zygotic Mynci have all had the band open for them when they've passed through San Francisco.

I have been playing Eternal a lot in my DJ sets & it all started with Dev/Null posting a video clip of a tune he was working on, in a Skype group chat we're both a part of. It was probably the best thing I'd ever heard from him and I hassled him relentlessly to finish this track so I could start playing it and then potentially signing it for Future Retro London. That tune he was working on ended up being Eternal & I had no hesitation towards taking the tune for the label. I asked him who he would like to remix Eternal for the release and he picked DJ B (who's had tunes out on Demolition Squad & Brazen) and he did a nice 4x4 version, taking the track down a stompier path (I don't know if stompier is a word but can't think of a better word to use).

Watch The Spin is a tune I first heard when I was in Helsinki, playing at a night called 20hz, organised by DJ Sofa & ODJ Pirkka. Pirkka played after me and during his set, I heard him play this track which had a wicked 90s Bristol jump-up flavour, but with new twists & style to it. I went into the booth and asked him who it was by, and he told me it was by him & another guy called Onni and that they'd recently started making music together under the alias of Unlimited Vibes. When I got back to London the next day, I asked him to send the tune and he did and I really liked the track, so decided to sign it for Future Retro London, to fit alongside Eternal on this release. And to complete the release, Ricky Force has done an exceptional remix of Watch The Spin, bringing his modern jungle sound to the table.

Bret McKenzies Lieder wurden bereits von Kermit dem Frosch, Celine Dion, Lizzo, Benedict Cumberbatch, Brittany Howard, Homer und Lisa Simpson, Fred Armisan, Miss Piggy, Amy Adams, Jason Segal, Ricky Gervais, Benee, Isabela Merced, Spongebob Schwammkopf, Tony Bennett, Mickey Rooney und vielen anderen gesungen. Das selbstbetitelte Debütalbum von Flight of the Conchords wurde 2025 mit Gold ausgezeichnet und ging prompt in einer limitierten Gold-Vinyl-Variante über den Ladentisch.

For anyone unfamiliar with Skeleton Recordings, it was started in 1992 by DJ Monita based in West London and had a quality string of releases between 92-94 like Triple 6, Luv To Luv Ya, A Classic Skank, The Razor's Edge, Nightmares, I could go on and on...

In 2014, the label started back up again & I'd been sending some of my music to Monita around this time which led to me releasing an EP called Storylines on the label in 2016, where I was able to put out some of my music that was made in a darker & more modern style than my usual oldskool inspired work. I also had a tune featured on the 25th anniversary release series called Time's Up alongside other favourite artists of mine like Threshold, Gremlinz, Antidote (R.I.P), Future, Theory, Ricky Force & many more.

In 2021, Monita announced that he would be retiring Skeleton Recordings and putting out the final releases, which were single sided represses of Luv To Luv Ya & Nightmares, nearly 30 years after they originally were made. However, I had some great unofficial remixes that Phineus II had done of The Razor's Edge & Full Cry by Steve C & Monita, which never saw the light of day officially and I took a chance by contacting Monita to see if he'd be up for one more Skeleton Recordings release, in conjunction with Future Retro London.

Thankfully, he was up for the release and on top of that, he was able to provide 2 tracks that he made in 1995 that were meant for Skeleton Recordings but never saw the light of day until they were released digitally on Hardcore Junglism for a brief period of time, but never released on vinyl.

Eurovision glory happened for the UK in 1997, and winners Katrina And The Waves with ‘Love Shine A Light’ close the first side…while over on the other, a second George Michael classic from his ‘Older’ album, the beautiful ‘You Have Been Loved’, opens ahead of another contemporary masterpiece ‘Secret Garden’ from Bruce Springsteen. Texas scored a UK top 5 with ‘Say What You Want’, and Sheryl Crow had a top 10 hit with ‘A Change Would Do You Good’. Paul McCartney’s ‘Young Boy’ is next before ‘Ready To Go’ which gave Republica a Top 20 chart debut, and closing the first LP, Robbie Williams’ ‘Old Before I Die’, which became his second smash as a solo artist.



LP2 kicks off with Radiohead’s defining ‘Paranoid Android’, ahead of Kula Shaker’s hit cover of ‘Hush’, and alt-pop from Embrace (‘All You Good Good People’), The Charlatans (‘North Country Boy’) and The Seahorses (‘Love Is The Law’) before the side closes with Oasis’s huge #1 ‘D’You Know What I Mean?’ – the lead single from their third album ‘Be Here Now’… Flip the LP over and discover some of 1997’s dancefloor gold – opening with the club juggernaut and #1 ‘Professional Widow’ from Tori Amos, remixed for single release by Armand Van Helden, along with Olive’s UK #1 ‘You’re Not Alone’ and the huge ’97 ‘Now Voyager’ remix of ‘You Got The Love’ from The Source feat. Candi Staton. En Vogue’s powerful ‘Don’t Let Go (Love)’ is up next, ahead of ‘I Wanna Be The Only One’, a #1 for Eternal feat. Bebe Winans. Slime Season is the seventh self-released mixtape by American rapper Young Thug, released on September 16, 2015. It features production from a range of artists, including London on da Track, Metro Boomin, Ricky Racks, Wheezy, and WondaGurl, and guest appearances from Migos, Gucci Mane, Peewee Longway, and Lil Wayne.

Helsinki tenor saxophonist Jussi Kannaste's debut album as a band leader has been a long time coming. A top musician in the local scene revered by his contemporaries and sought after as a band member, Kannaste now presents his new work Out Of Self and Into Others on We Jazz Records. His quartet, Kannaste4, brings together Finnish musicians Tomi Nikku (of Bowman Trio) and Joonas Riippa, plus Berlin-based Swedish bassist Petter Eldh (of Koma Saxo / Post Koma and Y-OTIS), and features an all original program penned by Kannaste. His music is highly personal contemporary jazz leaning into modes of avantgarde expression. At times quiet as a whisper, at times fiery and swinging, Out Of Self and Into Others is a product of a deep marinade, a debut album that feels like much more than "just" that.

Jussi Kannaste (born 1976) is a saxophonist and educator based in Helsinki. Prior to launching Kannaste4, he has been a key part of the scene for 20+ years, performing in highly acclaimed bands such as Antti Lötjönen Quintet East, 3TM, Jaska Lukkarinen Trio, Ricky-Tick Big Band, and many more. As the head of the department of Jazz at Sibelius Academy, Kannaste is also a key figure in internationally admired Finnish jazz education system.

2025 marks 40 years since Ricky Ross met Dougie Vipond and they started to form Deacon Blue, the songs on "The Great Western Road" reflect the journey the band has taken and remain honest to the age and experience they all share. Ricky Ross: "It"s just the next part of the adventure and it"s as exciting now as it was back in 1988". The joyous lead single "Late "88" fondly remembers the care-free excitement of those early days. The "Great Western Road" was recorded at the legendary Rockfield Studios, Ricky Ross and (Deacon Blue guitarist and long term collaborator) Gregor Philp return to production duties, having last produced the bands" Top 5 charting and their last full length album, 2020"s "City Of Love". This album was recorded by Matt Butler, who first worked with the band on their debut, "Raintown".

Milwaukee's underground scene of the late 1990s harbored many hidden gems, and
Akarso is certainly one of its finest. Blending elements of post-hardcore, math rock,
screamo, and noise rock, the trio quickly made a name for themselves during their
short yet intense existence. Their chaotic and intricate sound earned them a loyal
following within math and post-hardcore circles, and they toured extensively, leaving
behind a legacy that would influence the Midwest's underground music scene for
years to come. With Leave Quietly: 1997-1999, Akarso's complete recorded catalog has
been unearthed, giving listeners a chance to experience the raw energy and innovative
sound of a band that was well ahead of its time. Released through Expert Work
Records, this LP collects Akarso's recorded output from their brief but impactful run.
Featuring Nathan Lilley on vocals and guitar (who would later gain notoriety with Call
Me Lightning), Joe Wong on drums (now a prolific composer for TV and film and host
of The Trap Set ), and Greg Roteik on bass (of Key of Evil fame), the trio's musical
chemistry is undeniable. Their dynamic interplay and knack for combining dissonance
with technical precision is immediately apparent, and this collection serves as both a
time capsule and sheer example of their musical skills.
The songs feel unpolished in the best possible way, full of jagged guitar riffs, off-kilter
rhythms, and aggressive vocals. It's easy to hear why Akarso garnered attention
during their brief career: their music demanded attention. Tracks from the collection

Being Dead knows how to make an entrance - within the first several seconds of EELS, the duo's new record, the bright, hard-strummed guitar line on "Godzilla Rises" conjures cinematic immediacy, a creature emerging from the depths of the ocean in campy, freaky stop motion, fittingly so. Being Dead's records are mosaics, technicolor incantations, each song its own self-contained little universe. And while the dreamlike EELS probes further into the depths of the duo Being Dead's psyche, it is, most importantly, in the year of our lord 2024, a 16-track record that is genuinely unpredictable from one track to the next: a joyous and unexpected trip helmed by two true-blue freak bitch besties holed up in a lil' house in the heart of Austin, Texas. They decamped to Los Angeles for two weeks to record with GRAMMY-winning producer John Congleton, writing songs for the record until days before they left. The radical shift in process was welcome - a good balance and a challenge, Congleton helping them find new ways to work and helping peel back the layers on the core of their songwriting. Being Dead has grown from a duo to a trio live, including bassist Ricky Motto (who is immortalized finally on record here, particularly in the giggles on "Rock n' Roll Hurts") The resulting EELS is a darker record, tapped more into the devilishness within, but it's also a more raucous, rougher ride sonically. There's heartbreak, excitement, enchantment, dancing - we move through it all at a high-octane pace. Falcon Bitch and Smoofy never want to do the same thing twice on any song, and they don't. In November 2024, Ocean Moon Group along with friends Ricky Romain and Paul Chivers (Ramjac Corporation) convened at Shearwater Studios in the South West of England to create a collective message of peace. The resulting project is the next instalment of Lo Recordings' ongoing SPACIOUSNESS series of lovingly produced limited cassettes.

'CALL FOR PEACE' is a clarion call to seek a peaceful solution to the conflict in Gaza - and to all conflicts around the globe.
The album was recorded by the group over a single exploratory studio performance, one that was shared with friends and family of the bandmates, who attended the live session to share in this peaceful expression. Jon Tye (Lo Recordings, MLO, Seahawks) had shared with the group a suite of music with differing textures and movements of drones, samples and bell-like tongue drums which served as the foundation of the piece, to which master sitarist Ricky Romain added melodic inflection and counterpoint.

Further percussion was deftly handled by Paul Chivers, who used a wide array of drums from around the world to add his own unique rhythmic inflections. Jack Harman provided harmonic chordal work by incorporating the beautiful Shearwater piano, as well as the differing tonality of both electric and acoustic guitars. Weaving between these mixed motifs was the ambient percussion techniques of Graham Guy Robinson who used rain sticks and chimes to decorate the piece with contrasting punctuations.

'CALL FOR PEACE' was created with the deepest intention that, through music, we can travel beyond borders, beyond words and beyond politics and instead reach out with our humanity and put an end to suffering.

Keziah Jones was born and raised in Lagos, Nigeria. Then has been living between Paris - he's been an established & cult musical brand in France - , London and Lagos.
