Il Giardino dei Semplici - Carnevale da Buttare

Massive balearic summer vibes going on here! Futuribile records did set its eyes on the past with a reissue of Il Giardino dei Semplici's "Carnevale Da Buttare". In addition to the original song, this 45rpm 12" record provides an instrumental rework of "Carnevale Da Buttare" by Raffaele 'Whodamanny' Arcella, the son of Il Giardino dei Semplici's keyboardist and founding member Andrea Arcella. Whodamanny makes a nice balance between the original and todays functionality. He swapped the blazing saxophones for mind-melting synth solos that takes things into othe realms. Hot stuff!!.

Has there ever been a better time to fuck off to the stars? Is a prison breakout ‘escapism’? Crisis carve some wound-space to let the dreams back in. In nights we turn to fire, in flight we burst into stone, where are the exits in this theatre of the damned? Strict luggage allocations – guitar (D. Knight), saxophone (S. Thrower) – and all the electronics your thoughts can carry. Headspin echoes, round and around, tilt wind-sails at a dark horizon, cut a stutter through the distance barrier. In to be out through the structure of the eye, encrusted with rotor-slime, pushing on through border erosions as everything melts into smoke, burning objects may be closer than they appear. Nebulae dazzle the shadows, tunnel through memories and the pulp-mass of neurons, forwards heading backwards, end of tether snapped, slide into the earth like ancient worms and breathe.

UnicaZürn’s core instrumentation blends analogue synthesiser, mellotron and electric piano with electric guitar and saxophone. Knight is reknowned for his pioneering multi-textured fretwork with Danielle Dax and Shock-Headed Peters, and his ambient guitar settings for Lydia Lunch, while Thrower’s reed playing provided rage and melancholy in Coil and turns to electro-acoustic texture in Cyclobe.

- FEATURED IN GRAND THEFT AUTO IV ON THE

- 50TH ANNIVERSARY LIMITED EDITION OF 500 INDIVIDUALLY NUMBERED COPIES ON TRANSPARENT VINYL

Keyboard virtuoso Terry Riley started experimenting with different instruments in the '50s. One of his electronic music landmarks is his third album A Rainbow in Curved Air. Through the use of overdubbing, he recorded all the instruments to feature on the title track. The composition consists of three movements, each representing another part of his musical influences. As the song progresses, its structure goes through frequent changes. It's an colorful, psychedelic, atmospheric and revolutionary song. The second track consists of a loop of saxophones and is the dreamy and calm opposite of the title track. Fans of electronic music, such as Tangerine Dream and Klaus Schulze, would love this record. Taking inspiration from Hindustani classical music and jazz techniques, Riley's masterpiece influenced many musicians, from the likes of Brian Eno to Emeralds.

A Rainbow in Curved Air 50th anniversary limited edition is available as 500 individually numbered copies on transparent vinyl.

Ralph Heidel / Homo Ludens - Moments of Resonance

After The First Wave Of Artists That Have Broken The Ice With Their Way Of Combining Contemporary Symphonic Music With Electronica And Jazz On The European Side (olafur Arnalds, Nils Frahm, Max Richter) - Now There Is A New Generation Of Young Musician Breaking Boundaries On A New Level. Especially In Germany There Is A New Wave Of Artists That Bring The Thing On A Whole New Level. These 20 - 25 Year Old People Don't Just Imitate What The Bigger Names In The Scene (the Fathers) Have Done But Develop The Style To A Totally Different Level And Add New Ideas Instead Of Just Copying What The Older Guys Did. This New Wave Of Artists Have A Huge Musical Knowledge, Have Studied At The Best Music Academies, Learned To Play "classical" Instruments And Know How To Improvise On A Very High Level. They Have Been Raised In 2 Different World: Studied The History Of (contemporary) Classical Music And Also Been Influenced By What's Happening In Electronica Evolution Of The Last 25 Years. Ralph Heidel Is One Of These New Kids In The German Scene. Coming From Munich, The 25 Year Old Extremely Talented Musician Studied Saxophone And Composition At The Munich Academy Of Music (known For Being The Best Music School In Germany. Think Julliard Or Berklee). He Graduated In 2018.leering Everything About The Music Of 20th Century Composers (charles Ives, Alfred Schnittke, Giöyrgi Ligeti Etc). At The Same Time He Grow Up With The Music Of Electronic Producers Like Alvo Noto, Boards Of Canada, Jon Hopkins, Jan Jelinek, Four Tet Since Early Days. And: He Comes From A Jazz Musicians Family And Has Grown Up By Listening To The Jazz Collection Of His Father. Studied Saxophone Since Age Of 12 With A Big Passion For The More Advanced Jazz. In His Own Music All This Comes Together. "moments Of Resonance" Are Seven Compositions Full Of Brilliant Little Ideas, Harmonic Complexity, Unheard Music Surprises, Clever Citations, Dramatic Evolutions, Big Explosive Moments, Meditative Moments And Euphoric High Points. This Album Is An Extremely Emotional Work Of Art For Strings, Saxophone, Drums, Bass And Electronics. Ralph Heidel And His 7 Piece Ensemble Homo Ludens Connect Contemporary Chamber Music With Electronica, Ambient, Post Rock And Avant-garde Jazz. On A Highest Possible Musical Level - Without Getting Too Abstract And Incomprehensible. Everything Is Composed And Improvised. Nothing Is Sampled. You Find Wild Punk-jazz Parts That Recall John Zorn Or Mahavishnu Orchestra And Romantic Passages That Make You Think About European Impressionistic Composers Like Ravel Or Debussy. But Nothing Is Imitated, Everything Gets Broken Up Through An Expressive New Way Of Using Harmonization And Melodic Composing. Sometimes The Band Flies Through An Ambient And Drone Universe But One Moment Later The Music Evolves Into An Explosive, Impossible To Describe Musical Moment. One Of Heidel's Biggest Ability Is To Melt Electronic And Organic Elements Into A New Unheard Sound.

Over And Over

04.04.2019

Rudie will recognise Bobby Sarkie from The Tartans and The Immortals (not to mention his solo roots killer Better World). His singing here is expertly reined in by desolation, numbness and regret, over a hollowed-out, mesmeric rhythm, with some nasty synth-work and casually brilliant effects on the drums. The vocal cut is more than a minute longer than the version which opens the Jah Son Invasion album with such a flourish; and the mix is different, with more prominent keys, and toned-down bass. It's previously unreleased, like the dub.The B-side is booby-trapped with sensational instrumental excursions on Junior Delahaye's Working Hard For The Rent Man and Jackie Mittoo's almighty Drum Song, which conclude the same original tape-reel as Over And Over. Rent Rebate features masterful, boppish soprano saxophone-playing by Roland Alphonso, and restrained guitar interjections by Barry Vincent, with a Spanish tang. The superb hand-drumming on Mount Zion is by Ras Menelik; and it's Mittoo himself on organ (or just maybe Clive Hunt, Wackies can't quite remember).

Lucky Brown & The S.G.'s - Sweet Tea (With My Sweetie)

The only "lost track" from the same session as Lucky Brown's critically acclaimed "Mesquite Suite", "Sweet Tea (With My Sweetie)" reminds fans of Lucky Brown's trademark deepfunk sound that he and his crew can still ignite a dancefloor - and keep it lit for almost 8 minutes! "Sweet Tea (With My Sweetie)" is a cool, refreshing swig of sweet instrumental soul to enjoy while watching the sun set over the pecan trees of the Texas Hill Country with your lover.

Belly-up to the bar and gitcherself a couple tall frosty glasses of Lucky's trademark production/sound swirled with a heady shot of his backing band The S.G.'s. Your thirst for funk will be quenched by a solid deepfunk 2-sider complete with a Texas barbecued guitar feature up front, and jalapeño spiced trombone to take out side one. Then, on the flip: a smoked-out saxophone solo, some cornbread trumpet, some super sweet vintage organ treats, and finally building energy to a tasty drum and horn break - Lucky's brand of Sweet Tea is good to the last drop!

The Tramp team is extremely proud to have been working with such a genius for so many years and hopefully for many more to come! We want to thank all of you who have supported us in the past - thank you so much!

So, go ahead, mix up some "Sweet Tea" this summer! Your listeners will be bobbing their heads, smiling, and feeling good while they holler out for another tall cool glass of "More Sweet Tea".

Lines Of Sight

Erased Tapes
26.03.2019

On March 15th Erased Tapes presents the invigorating and powerful debut solo album Lines of Sight by Australian-born, Liverpool-based composer, saxophonist and founder of Immix Ensemble, Daniel Thorne. Deeply moving, full of otherworldly beauty and rapture, the album is alive, throbbing like a circulatory system, colourful and glowing. It literally dazzles - effectively capturing what the birth (or death) of a planet might sound like.

In Daniel's own words, 'Thematically, this music was inspired by birds-eye aerial images and the idea of perspective - how something incredibly complex like a river or the surface of the ocean is reduced to a simple line or shape when viewed from the heavens. The line between natural and man-made becomes increasingly blurred.'

Every strand is fresh, vital and purposeful. The description 'seamless' might suggest a smooth, bland fusion, but here elements overlap in intermittent, undulating layers of mesh. Avant-garde, noise, electronics, ecclesiastical, classical, a touch of jazz and traces of Wyatt-style contemporary folk come together, each occupying their own space while acquiescing with the whole.

'Several compositions are derived from ratios and processes, and are highly calculated, while others evolved in a much more organic way. I wanted to create music that blurred lines between acoustic and electronic, organic and synthetic, composition and improvisation.
I've long been a fan of studio-based composition, but have always found the infinite possibilities on offer daunting and, often, a stumbling block. To get around this I set myself a challenge of limiting myself to the physical instruments in my possession - a few different saxophones and a bass synth, with no more than four tracks to record them,' he adds.

Lines of Sight follows Thorne's work as artistic director of the acclaimed, collaboration-focussed group Immix Ensemble. Together with experimental electronic artist Vessel, he co-wrote Transition released on Erased Tapes in 2016, described by BBC Radio 6's Mary Anne Hobbs as 'a remarkable new piece of music'. More recently, he worked with acclaimed modular synth wizard Luke Abbott, to create a four-part suite, which was premiered live in June 2017. Immix Ensemble have also performed special live commissions with Kelly Lee Owens, Dialect, Jane Weaver and Bill Ryder-Jones, among others.

Prior to leaving Australia, Daniel was fortunate to work with some of the country's leading new music ensembles as both a composer and performer, receiving commissions from the TURA New Music Festival and the Australia Council, as well as being appointed as Composer in Residence at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts. In the UK he was the recipient of the prestigious Dankworth Prize for Jazz Composition, and also undertook a residency at Metal Liverpool, which provided him with the time and space to create Immix.

As the first track under Thorne's own name, 'Iroise' was recorded for the Erased Tapes 10th anniversary release 1+1=X, alongside works by Nils Frahm, Penguin Cafe, A Winged Victory For The Sullen and Rival Consoles. He also recently remixed Manu Delago, known as the live percussionist for Björk and Ólafur Arnalds. After a first solo performance at Sea Change Festival 2018, the new year will see Daniel tour across Europe, promoting the forthcoming release of Lines of Sight.

Fabriano Fuzion - Cosmik Sindinka

" I used to live in rue de Clignancourt, and remember as a kid going to the 14th of July West Indian ball organized by my father rue André Del Sartre in Montmartre every year. There I would meet, among others, saxophonist Robert Mavounzy. Sticking to the area, my older brother had a band and often played at the famous venue La Cigale, where even Henri Salvador joined him for a jam from time to time."Since childhood Serge Fabriano bathed in music, to-ing and fro-ing between his native Guadeloupe and Paris where he grew up. He attended the music conservatory, learnt how to play bass, met and played with many musicians and was ultimately angling for a career as a music teacher. But Serge had wanderlust; he lived to meet new people and was passionate about travel. Thus, it was in a squat located rue de Flandres in the 19th district of Paris that Serge Fabriano met by chance zarb player Djamchid Chemirami, one of Iran's greatest percussionists, who invited him to the Arts Festival of Shiraz-Persepolis. After a month-long motorcycle journey, he and his guitar teacher, Roger Bénichou, arrived in Tehran. Sadly their guitars didn't survive the journey. It was there that he met, among others, Woody Shaw, Max Roach and his wife Abbey Lincoln. Serge also formed a friendship with saxophonist Gary Bartz and stayed on a month playing with the cream of the musicians who'd attended to the Festival.During the mid-70's, he alternated between teaching classes and live gigs, and performed in Germany with a funk band comprised of ex-GIs from the US Army. He also met the members of Chick Corea's group, Return to Forever, and especially Stanley Clarke who became a great source of inspiration to him. From 1978 onwards, Serge Fabriano put aside teaching and devoted more time to music. He became a musician's musician, doing studio recordings with rock bands. He also played with members of the Caribbean diaspora, which included the great drummer Marcel Lollia (known as Velo), Patrick Jean-Marie, Guy Conquette, Winston Berkley, Mino CineluDuring the "Ayatollah Comédie" musical comedy tour organized by the Journal Liberation, Serge met actor Pierre Clémenti (Il Gattopardo, Belle De Jour, The Conformist). This was a game-changer : "I was trying to record my first record. Clémenti suggested the Studio Beaubourg in Paris. "The group Fabriano Fuzion - Fabriano Unit Zion - was born. The band brought together some of the Caribbean's most inspired musicians: Martinican-born Mario Canonge on the piano (his first appearance on an album), Alain-Jean Marie on the synthesizer, Edouard and Pierre Labor on saxophones, Claude Vamur (Kassav ') on the drums, singer/percussionists Marie-Reine Lamoureux and Marie-Céline Lafontaine, percussionists Roger Raspail, Sully Cally and Hector Ficadière (Tumblack, Vent Levé) on Ka percussions. It is precisely the Gwo Ka - this ancestral 'root' music deeply embedded in the heart of the Guadeloupe musician - which constitutes the rhythmic backbone of this first opus. The Gwo Ka, the jazz, the poetry and the spiritual vibe are gathered here to form a splendid album; one of the true masterpieces to emerge from the French West Indies.Rarely will a band have borne its name so well than Fabriano Fuzion - its music is a multiple and collective work in which each element brings its identity and its richness, conferring to this major work a truly fusional dimension.

Clifford Jordan Quartet - Glass Bead Games

Fifth part of the Strata-East Dolphy Series, Glass Bead Games is arguably the crown jewel of the Strata East movement, an amorphous genre that treads an unusual path between post-bop, 70's avant-garde and spiritual jazz, with a groove.

Glass Bead Games is full of revelations at many levels. First, the decade of the 1970s did produce genuinely creative, "human" new music flowing from the jazz mainstream; second, Bill Lee was more than Spike's dad: he was a superlative bassist, a team player of the first order, a powerful catalyst who, if anything, deserves to be better known than his son; third, Billy Higgins was, as so many musicians insist, a once-in-a-lifetime drummer—the bellows inspiriting the collective flame.

Most importantly, Clifford Jordan was an artist of the first order, his playing so effortless and unforced, unselfconscious and focused, mature and wise that, at a time when altissimo fury was all the rage, it's small wonder his authentic voice frequently went unheard. His musical rhetoric is so personally expressive, its substance so compelling, the listener couldn't care less about the extraordinary technique required to convey its captivating message. Compared to some of his more acclaimed peers he's a less aggressive yet paradoxically more directive and shaping influence. The climaxes, rather than spelled out, are merely suggested, registering with deep and lasting impact on the listener. It all comes down to learning the language, those precious little beads. Not every player, including Jordan or the listener, can use it like Shakespeare, but all can learn to read Shakespeare and understand its principles of arbitrariness and serendipity, of invariance and transformation.

Jordan, no less than Shakespeare, requires a like-minded cast of players—in this case four musicians of such redoubtable proficiency that each remains committed to keeping the beads in play. He's not a man content with a mere musical "dialogue" with his fellow musicians nor is he about to take the initiative in pulling his troops up to his level. Instead he begins to tell a musical story that's so compelling his three comrades are inspired equally to contribute to a collaborative narrative. This is brilliant music-making by a Coltrane- influenced successor who feels no obligation to mime the predecessor. It may be the most significant saxophone performance on record since Coltrane and, providing the listener stays with it for any length of time, the most deeply satisfying. Jordan's game—so effortless, unforced, and "level"—erases distinctions between composed and improvised, soloist and ensemble, narrator and narrative, the dancer and the dance. It seems incapable of wearing out its welcome.

04.03.2019

Heavy-weather, beyond-good-and-evil soundsystem poetics, channelling raw and rootical techno, Isolationist abstraction, and dub at its most turbulent and raw-nerved and space-time-warping. New worlds ahead... Equal parts tuff, tail-thrashing dancehall pressure - see 'Hell Dub' - and art-of-darkness ambience and introspection, culminating in the slow-burning, third-eye-opening 23-minute dreamweapon, 'Vertigo'. Part of the Young Echo crew, Ossia embodies the best tradition of Bristol underground music in that he doesn't pay much mind to tradition, just does his own thing. Yes, Devil's Dance shares DNA with those sullen masterpieces we will always associate with the city, from blunted 90s street-soul/hip-hop to sub-loaded dubstep - but like his forebears Ossia is ultimately a mongrel breed, drawing from his own, very contemporary and idiosyncratic well of influences: grime, jazz, steppers, dub, post-punk and industrial abrasion, concrète minimalism... Devil's Dance could easily be not just a forbidding, but a suffocating proposition. But even at its most angst-ridden it feels lithe and aerodynamic, its darker impulses both intensified, and offset, by a pure soundboy's delight in detail and colour and higher dancefloor mechanics. The music pulses with energy, a fever to communicate...and Raki Singh (violin), Jasmine (vocals) and Ollie Moore (saxophone) add vivid flesh-tone to the punishing, plasmic electronics. The record was mixed at an infamous, subterranean Bristolian recording studio, using an arsenal of spring and plate reverbs, modded pedals, tape-delays and compressors: systems of black magic crucial to the album's intense presence and physicality and carefully modulated dread. In the end what we are witnessing, and experiencing vicariously, is a purging, an exorcism: find the devil, dance with the devil... and then chase, chase, chase him out of the earth

Dancer
04.02.2019

"Come on spread yourself over me like peanut butter", aber sehr gerne doch.
The highly anticipated second issue of the Dancer anthology by Pauli Steinbach,
Sascha Dive and Patrick Kunkel centres on one of the most quoted vocal samples in the history of house music. It is a
homage to Soul Train, Paradise Garage and other hot spots from the initial period of electronic dance music in the early
80s. Pauli and Sascha dance through the glitzy portal of Soul Train, a relaxed deep disco hymn where even the saxophone
samples fit like the icing on the cake.
Pauli and Sascha do this in a funky way and with the modernized kinky understanding that is characteristic for Dancer.
The remix on the flip side produced by Pauli in cooperation with Patrick ventures a little further from the original sound structures. It presents itself as a kindred handclaps orgy with borrowings from
acid disco. "Come on, spread yourself over me like peanut butter", but of course -- with pleasure.

Born in 1948 and residing in the medieval Swiss town of Lenzburg, and virtually unknown outside of the German-speaking world, Häusermann is a multi-instrumentalist and enormously prolific composer who works primarily in the medium of absurdist music-theatre. A virtuoso wind player and free improviser who also composes for traditional classical instrumentation, his work is characterised by subtly surreal humour and the unlikely combination of extended technique and simple, at times almost child-like, melodic ideas. Named after his rehearsal room in Lenzburg, Galerie Randolph uses an enormous array of instruments to craft a work of singular compositional vision. Each of the twelve pieces begins from the same two elements: a woozy, sliding scatter of tones played on a home-made contraption stretching two guitar strings between the top of Häusermann's alto saxophone and an amplified cup, and a series of uneasy block chords sounded on accordion and reeds. On each piece these two elements (whose pitch gradually raises throughout the record) are complemented by entirely different material, all of it played by Häusermann. Ranging from layered flutes to one-finger piano melodies to unintelligible vocals to musique concrete interjections to free jazz saxophone explosions, these additional layers combine with the endlessly returning idée fixe of the foundational elements to create a truly dream-like listening experience, a gently deranged realm in which we lose all sense of linear time. Calling up the most unlikely combinations of possible predecessors - Erik Satie, Gerry Mulligan, and Helmut Lachenmann perhaps -Galerie Randolph ultimately defies comparison. Almost unknown except to a select group of cognoscenti such as Jim O'Rourke, yet destined to become a cult classic, Galerie Randolph is an instance of that most rare thing: music the likes of which you have never heard before.

Presented in a deluxe gatefold sleeve with gorgeous archival images by the composer. Design by Stephen O'Malley. Mastered and cut by Rashad Becker at D&M, Berlin

Charles Brackeen - Rhythm X - The Music Of Charles Brackeen
  • A1: Rhythm X
  • A2: Hour Glass
  • B1: Charles Concept
  • B2: C.B. Blues

On this record, the little-known Charles Brackeen brings his saxophone to a party with most of Ornette Coleman's band. As might be expected, while Brackeen certainly holds his own, it's Ornette's boys who bring the thunder, playing around Brackeen's muscular alto as if they were a gang jumping on a new member. Haden's bass playing provides the frantic pulse, here and there ceding the stage to Blackwell's flexible drumming and dropping out to provide rolling sheets of sound by bowing his instrument. Brackeen and Cherry wrestle across this solid bedrock, with results that are often surprising and never short of beautiful.

Zoe Mcpherson - String Figures Remixes

'String Figures Remixes' is a series of remixes released on December 14th 2018 following the previous-ly highly acclaimed LP String Figures by Zoe Mc Pherson. (Watch her Boiler Room live show)

Remixers for this EP include Ben Vince (Hessle Audio co release w/ Joy Orbison & Where To Now solo album where collaborators include Mica Levi & Rupert Clervaux), N1L (Opal Tapes & UIQ), Hester-1, Bartellow (ESP Institute, Public Possession) & Sukitoa o Namau (First Terrace Recordings).

The EP is pressed on transparent vinyl & comes along with transparent sleeve.

When asked why Zoe chose each artist for her remix album she writes:

Ben Vince is my mate since he opened for my release in London last April and he was really excited about making a remix. Which I think is even nicer is that he only remixed and did not play saxophone. He actually properly very much remixed all the elements, all recognisable, which is a delight to listen to when you know all the parts seperately. The only thing he did is making it a UK club banger track !!!! :)

N1L is a friend whom I admire totally for his capacities of producing incredibly wicked tracks in no time. He's got 10 000 collabs going on ( abit like Ben). I don't know how he does it, but damn his remix is also one of these that are a delight to listen to when the samples are re organised in a very cool way which is his own.

Hester -1 is also a friend, violinist and producer from Antwerp. She is a nerd, her style and projects are developing, we jammed together, and I wanted her to be on the original album, so now she is in the remixes and made a very dark piece and now I'm thinking she should meet N1L :)

Bartellow is also a friend, behind SVS, and he was the first one to make a remix in 1 hour on a flight I think actually even before the album came out!!!! He had already made a proper groovy banger, as he always does, with his style.

Sukitoa O Namau I've been chatting with since a while, she's an incredibly inspiring artist, releasing on First Terrace records, she used to be a dancer and is an explorer of sound and of many things. She basically fucked up my track, by changing the rythms into no rythms and purifying it very much which reveals other things. Only keeping rough elements of it and I think it's absolutely brilliant.

Bendik Giske - Adjust

Smalltown Supersound is proud to present our new signing Bendik Giske from Oslo, Norway.

In addition to original track Adjust this EP also contains remixes from Total Freedom, Lotic, Rezzett and Deathprod.

The performance artist and saxophonist's mesmerizing debut takes listeners on a true journey through the euphoria and wanderlust of nights spent clubbing—using little more than his voice, saxophone, his instrument of choice, and more than a few well-placed microphones.

Giske finds a natural home in Smalltown Supersound as he cites Lindstrom's arpeggio sounds and Evan Parker's circular breathing as references, both of whom have released on the label. By combining the two extreme sides of the scale, he seamlessly fuses freeform jazz and club music.

Serbia's Soul Print Recordings returns after a year away, this time with Englishman Mark Hand at the helm. Four pieces of beautiful and emotive deep house from Mark, fresh from his Cobwebs EP on Uzuri earlier this year. The record kicks off with Midnight, a beautiful track with it's floaty pads and gently rippling bass tones, coupled with the great soulful voice of Greg Blackman. False Leads is a percussive number, drenched in machine soul, with on the flip, Sio's voice sits effortlessly above a downtempo beat, while Mark adds his late father's saxophone to the mix on the final jazz enfused Mountains. Complementing the wonderful music is the design, with the label art handled once again by the talented Bratislav Milenkovic, and vinyl coming in a beautiful light pink colour, making a Soul Print Recordings release both an aural and visual thing of beauty.

Etienne Jaumet - 8 Regards Obliques

In a time when Jazz music is entering a contemporary renaissance and exciting the ears and minds of new audiences, Zombie Zombie's Étienne Jaumet offers us his unique, idiosyncratic take on the sound with the sprawling '8 Regards Obliques', his 3rd solo album with the Versatile label.

Jazz requires a certain freedom of technique, interpretation and improvisation that already matches Jaumet's own production style and sonic aesthetic as well as his playful approach towards music. The eight pieces that make up the new LP were very quickly recorded; Jaumet let himself be carried away by the atmosphere without focusing too much on fine details or the laborious aspects of the composition process. The finished article is a spontaneous collection that stands out, a true mirror image of the creative process adopted by the artist. Not surprisingly, spontaneity is one of the characteristics already present in his music, in both his recorded output and his live happenings, where he leaves much room for freedom and improvisation.

'8 Regards Obliques' was recorded at the Versatile studio in less than 3 weeks with quite a basic set up: TR 808, selected synthesizers, vocals and of course the saxophone, which is a constant presence also in his previous albums. For the mix Etienne has again appealed to the maestro I:Cube, a central figure of the Versatile story and a prdigious engineer and artist in his own right. He immediately understood that it was necessary to keep the spontaneous side alive and to not over-produce the pieces or over-edit them, being constantly mindful to retain the power in the sound and in the frequencies. From Sun Ra with 'Nuclear war', Miles Davis in 'Shhh / Peaceful' or 'Theme from a symphony' by Ornette Coleman to 'Caravan' (already quoted by many jazzmen), Etienne enjoyed revisiting classic masterpieces and paying tribute to his inspirations. He allowed himself only one personal and original composition, 'Ma révélation mystique'.

Various - Antilles Mechant Bateau

Fifteen track completion of deep biguines and Gwo Ka from the '60s French West Indies. The vinyl edition included a 4 page booklet + download code.

Biguine is a rhythmic style of music that originated in Guadeloupe and Martinique in the 19th century, which fuses 19th-century French ballroom

dance steps with African rhythms. Gwo Ka is found among all ethnic and religious groups of Guadeloupean society.

It combines responsorial singing in Guadeloupean Creole, rhythms played on the Ka drums and dancing. Gwo Ka is the musical and cultural product of the

region's African ancestry, forcibly brought to the Caribbean through slavery. Gwo Ka exists only in Guadeloupe, which is a very different island from much of

the Caribbean, in that it remains a 'department' of its original colonial master, France. Here the currency is the Euro and the baker sells croissants and café

au lait. This constant 'European-ising' of the island means that Gwo Ka plays a fundamental and important role in the defining of Guadeloupean identity.

'Antilles' Méchant Bateau', a low-tempo number with a bolero feel, indeed a pure case of the blues, and a terrific saxophone solo. What else would you

expect to set the tone for this selection, in which beguine regains its original colours, in the darkness of the Gwo Ka drums. This 45 by André Mahy, released

under the Aux Ondes sublabel, was recorded in the 1960s at Célini's, one of Guadeloupe's two main houses. Through its drum rolls and harrowing chant, it

recalled how, long before the mid-1960s, the Antilles' history was written in an ocean of teardrops - namely the Black Atlantic.

The New York Downtown Producer/Composer Returns With His First New Album In 3 Years

EIGHTEEN: the year of release, 2018. EIGHTEEN: the age at which I first used a synthesizer.

In creating EIGHTEEN I worked independently in the studio, initially building up tracks with synthesizers and found sounds recorded in my daily comings and goings. After working with the tracks over a period of months,I shared them with a few musicians, who added their own instrumental layers. Though working independently, we all shared a similar working process: working in our personal recording spaces, as opposed to larger recording studios.

The musicians are: Gabe Gurnsey (drums) of Factory Floor, with whom I collaborated on the Beachcombing EP and performed live at London's ICA. I appear on Gabe's newly released album Physical;

Larry Saltzman (guitar) has played in my Love Of Life Orchestra since the 1970's. Well-known for his work with Arthur Russell ('Kiss Me Again', Flying Hearts), he is in high demand in NYC by acts such as Simon and Garfunkel;

Paul Nowinski, (bass) has played with LOLO since the 1980's. Paul has an impressive list of credits, including Les Paul, Keith Richards, Bernard Purdie and the Boston Pops; Matt Mottel, (electric piano), is the newest addition to the Love Of Life Orchestra. He is half the duo Talibam!, a leading act in the noise jazz scene; Lewin Barringer, (guitar), is a talented guitarist and producer in Philadelphia.

After mixing the final tracks, I brought the mixes to Berlin. There I worked with the brilliant mastering engineer Mike Grinser who helped to give the album a unified sound.

I think of this album as electronic music. It was created in my home studio, using analog and digital synthesizers, found sounds recorded on my phone, and instrumental parts contributed by friends. Finely crafted melodies and harmonies are set against subway noises, street construction, and distant foghorns. Sometimes there are sustained clusters, generated by my leaning against the keyboard. Deliberateness paired with randomness: this is what guided the artistic process.

This album is atypical for me as I am not playing saxophone. (I do play one reed instrument - a harmonica.) I grew up with the sax as my primary instrument. Yet my father was a radio journalist so the reel-to-reel tape recorder was a ubiquitous presence in the family home. From an early age,

I experimented with the tape machine: recording, overdubbing and splicing tape. I learned about Varese from Frank Zappa liner notes; I read John Cage's 'Silence.' Electronic music was on my radar.

My first exposure to an actual synthesizer came when I recorded my first single at the fabled Sound City Studio in Van Nuys, CA. The studio had a custom Neve board, but it also had a firstgeneration Moog modular synthesizer sitting unused in the maintenance room. I asked and they kindly let me experiment with it. Soon, I enrolled at the University of California - San Diego after I discovered they had separate studios for their Moog and Buchla systems. These large modular synthesizers were affordable then only by institutions and rock stars. But these would be soon eclipsed by smaller, cheaper synths in the 70's and early 80's. In the same way, recording studio technology became accessible in the 90's. . And thus the personal computer and digital audio allowed studio quality production in the home studio. Electronic music had become democratized.
Handmade music by way of digital technology: this is the music of EIGHTEEN

AZAMBUJA & CIA - AZAMBUJA & CIA

In 1975, the prolific and multi-talented Brazilian comedians Chico Anysio and Arnaud Rodrigues recorded an album based on the protagonist of one of their most celebrated TV series. Sporting a dodgy moustache and an equally troubling haircut, Carioca conman Paulo Maurício Azambuja (played by Anysio) would flog his own mother's leg if he could, and his ever-ridiculous scams are inevitably always destined to fail. This soundtrack/musical re-imagining of the series combines jazz-funk with samba soul and MPB, with the help of cult Brazilian trio Azymuth. Keyboard maestro Jose Roberto Bertrami, who arranged the album alongside renowned conductor and composer Jose Menezes, elevates the groovy odd-ball sound to another dimension, with his set up including Fender Rhodes, Arp Strings, Arp Omni, Clavinet and Hammond organ. Remaining Azymuth members Ivan Conti (drums) and Alex Malheiros (bass) provide the signature Azymuth foundation, and saxophone prodigy Victor Assis Brasil and legendary multi-instrumentalist producer Durval Ferreira also feature. As well as its distinctly comedic character, what makes the music so special is the coming together of traditional samba roots, and Azymuth's ahead-of-its-time psychedelic funk influence. Each side ends with a comedy monologue, complete with live audience laughter, but before that you get seven tracks of weird and wonderfully emotive Brazilian groove music.

Bheki Mseleku - Celebration 2x12"

From the inheritor of John Coltrane's mouthpiece a re-integration of deep South African jazz roots with the Black Atlantic spiritual jazz continuum.

Celebration's release trumpeted the emerging dawn of South Africa's epochal changes. Sainted and blessed, Bheki Mseleku appeared as the herald of a new era, a prophet of rebirth and reconnection. This is a work signalling transition and change, and a sign of a South African music that was properly reconnected with global currents - a music that could journey far beyond the stifling combination of exile and oppression in which it had been bound.

Recognising Bheki as a kindred spirit to her late husband, Alice gave him the saxophone mouthpiece that John Coltrane had used during the recording of A Love Supreme. Coltrane was a permanent touchstone for the pianist, one of the few who Bheki felt had the same esoteric and spiritual focus as himself: 'the only musicians I know of who were deeply into this were Coltrane, and Pharoah and Sun Ra', he told an interviewer in 1992.

While the idioms of post-Coltrane spirit jazz are certainly to the fore on Celebration, they are energised by a swift and original musical vision, quite specific to Bheki's music, in which whole musical systems - the marabi and mbhaqanga jazz of the townships, American jazz, European classical, and more - are seamlessly mended together by the pianist's quicksilver musical sensibility and legendary technical ability.

Celebration was originally released on compact disc and cassette in the middle of 1992 by World Circuit. It was Bheki's first statement under his own name, and the first recorded presentation of his personal musical vision. This vision had been tempered across two decades which had combined intense professional playing with profound personal trials in both the spiritual and earthly domains, all set against the greater backdrop of South African political turmoil and exile in Europe.

The band brought together musicians hailing from three signally important points within the interconnected, communicating spaces of the Black Atlantic continuum - North America, post-colonial Britain, and southern Africa. With them, Mseleku created the first major South African-led musical statement to be produced after the sufferance of exile was ended. The ultimate and most egregious remnant of the centuries-long colonial era, apartheid, was finally being dismantled as they played. At this critical point, Mseleku's musical spirit work, channelled from a higher source, spoke of a time to come where all divisions might be transcended by a greater unity.

Metaboman - Wireless Dancer Ep

This is a long overdue collaboration and we couldn't be more excited to present a brand new EP from our man, Jena's mad scientist funk freak himself, Metaboman. A stalwart veteran of the legendary Musik Krause camp, which has been a kindred spiritual sister label of sorts of ours since the millennium-turn heydays, being fellow purveyors of bold and raw dance floor music, still brimming with new ideas galore and bucket loads of soul. Here with the Wireless Dancer EP we have Metaboman in top form offering nothing less than his finest work: 'Doppeldenk' starts things off with some classic Krause bump that brings to mind the heights of the Duo at their peak but updated, like an STL banger turned up to 11 with sinewy melodic lines and that special Thuringen twist. 'Hanno' follows up with a guest spot by jazz saxophone master Thomas Prestin, and guarantees to bring down the house with a storm of swinging stabs, rough riffs, and fresh-as-it-gets drum work. On the flip, 'Splitit' does exactly that, whether referring to wigs, legs, or that last drink ticket - where dusty blues vox chops and a rolling percussive smack down will revive any fading floor faces. And finally, 'EchterG' rounds it all out nicely with the illest of atonal trips and subsonic bass tones that the finer sound systems out there will fully indulge. Much love from Jena & Paris to the World!

Bella Topa

12inchLENG043
LENG RECORDS
26.09.2018

Almost three decades after he put out his first record as one half of Tummy Touch twosome Tutto Matto, Paulo Guigliemino continues to produce effortlessly brilliant music that joins the dots between vintage disco, boogie, proto-house and sun-kissed Balearica. For proof, just check the heavyweight dancefloor sunshine that is 'Bella Topa', his first release on Leng Records.

Slow, sensual and blessed with all manner of delay-laden drum machine percussion hits, the track fixes the producer's usual colourful, boogie-era synth flourishes and ear-pleasing instrumentation (think fluid electric pianos, fluttering flutes, eyes-closed jazz guitar solos, lilting saxophones and spacey electronic chords) to a chugging, head-in-the-clouds groove reminiscent of Lindstrom and Prins Thomas's early collaborative work. 'Bella Topa' cleverly shifts shape several times throughout, utilising jazzier rhythms and bolder melodies to light up key moments.

Remixes come from Guigliemino's old pal Federico Marton, a producer best known for being one half of sometime Get Physical, Superfiction and Snatch Recordings artists Italoboyz. He lays down two distinctive revisions, starting with a 'Slow' club reconstruction that adds additional percussive heaviness and sparkling electronics to Super Paolo's twinkling, sun-baked original.

His other version, a 'Fast' club reconstruction, drags Guigliemino's track towards peak-time dancefloors kicking and screaming. Making the most of his friend's killer groove and finding sufficient time and space for each life-affirming musical element to sparkle, his mix bobs, weaves and eventually soars for 12 mesmerizing minutes. The mix, like his slow version, makes use of additional percussion and wisely gives more prominence to the A-side's spacey electronics and boogie-influenced synthesizer flourishes. The results are little less than breathtaking.

08.08.2018

Brooklyn trio Forma's latest LP continues their mission to 'broaden the idea of what an electronic music ensemble can sound like.' Semblance emerged from exploratory sessions at The Schoolhouse, the Bushwick loft where members Mark Dwinell and John Also Bennett live, then was tracked at Gary's Electric studios, where their previous album Physicalist was also recorded.
Inspired by polyrhythmic composition, the human voice, and conceptual improvisation strategies, the songs are striking in their textural detail and emotional nuance, alternately synthetic and sentient, futuristic and intuitive. Incorporating flute, piano, guitar, saxophone, acoustic drums and cymbals alongside an array of synthesizers, the record persuasively demonstrates the group's unique playing abilities and fluid chemistry - attributes they credit to 'techniques we've developed to trick our electronic machines into mimicking the spontaneous character of live instruments.'
Members George and John Also Bennett also cite as an influence their recent stint in minimalist composer Jon Gibson's ensemble, performing his 1973 proto-ambient masterwork Visitations. The long- form modal piece requires restraint and deep listening to execute, qualities especially apparent in the more muted moments of Semblance, such as 'Rebreather' and 'New City.'
The group states the intent of the new album as 'to be more direct and exacting', which it is. Over half a decade spent writing and recording together has distilled Forma's hybrid electro-acoustic interplay into an attuned and astounding language, capable of articulating impossible symmetries and reflective states.
The stunning visuals of the artwork are by frequent collaborator of the group Peter Burr.

HESITATION is the culmination of a slow-burning penpal friendship between Reckno founder Chris Catlin (aka Yaaard), and Kit Records honcho Richard Greenan (sometimes Devon Loch). Meeting in London in 2016, the pair recorded a woozy slab of improvs, using a battered organ, guitars, a saxophone and whatever else came to hand. These takes were then stitched together into a seven track LP over the following two years.

Veering from shoegaze to crystal clear electronics and fuzzed out jazz, the results pull two ways: slow and fast, meditative and exuberant. Here is a place where time bends and bubbles, drunk synthetic choirs follow an endless skywards pulse, and plaited melodies hover in warm air like motes of dust.

Recommended if you like the heart-on-sleeve whistle alongs of Tenniscoats, Zappa's foggier guitar serpents or the creeping black magic of early Sebadoh. HESITATION is a joint release between Kit Records, Reckno and videogamemusic.

Various - MotorCity Wine Recordings #2

MotorCity Wine Recordings returns in fine style with its second EP featuring a swashbuckling blend of house and jazz sounds from Detroiters and their compatriots. Rising live techno star Haz Mat leads this 12' with a house-tinged boogie funk cover of Blue Six's Music & Wine', complete with vocoder and massive drums. Kuumba Reunion Band slides through next with the Afro-Jazz number 3 Fingered Fist (Jabbar)', a cut loaded with hand drums and chunky saxophone solos for the jazzdancers and listeners alike. MotorCity Wine guest and London native Aroop Roy kicks off the flip with a dubbed out beatdown house joint, a brilliant midtempo track perfect for the dread moments of the night. Last but certainly not least, The Hughes/Smith Quintet finish the release with an uptempo Jazz-Funk piece, with generous amounts of Fender Rhodes and call-and-response melodies. Only 500 vinyl pressed— enjoy the soulful sounds of Detroit.
