Das neue Flamingods-Album 'Head Of Pomegranate' wurde vom Grammy-gekrönten Produzenten Ben H. Allen (Animal Collective, Deerhunter, M.I.A.) aufgenommen. Die Londoner Band kreiert seit über einem Jahrzehnt unverwechselbare, genreübergreifende Musik. Das Durchdringen von Genres wie Psychedelia, New Wave, Electronica und Punk – oft innerhalb desselben Songs – ist ihre Spezialität, ebenso wie das Talent, Einflüsse aus dem einzigartigen kulturellen Erbe und die Liebe zum UK Rock'n Roll der 70er Jahre zu vermischen. Opener und erste Single 'Dreams (On The Strip)' geben mit stimmungsvollen Synths, düsteren Drum-Machines und dem euphorischen Refrain den Ton vor. Es ist eine neue Ära für die Band und sie möchte, dass wir dies von Anfang an wissen.

Kaum eine deutsche Band legt so viel Wert auf ihren Sound, während sie gleichzeitig so gehaltvolle und doch zugängliche Songs schreibt. Und wer nimmt es schon freiwillig auf sich, bei den Album-Aufnahmen auf Taschenlampen und WalkieTalkies angewiesen zu sein? Ohne die ist es einfach nicht möglich, sich in dem langsam zerfallenden, ehemaligen Rundfunkgebäude des MDR und seinen vielen Studios
zurechtzufinden.

In diesem Lost Space in Weimar haben YUUN sich für die Dauer der Aufnahmen häuslich eingerichtet.

Möbel dafür finden sie im ganzen Haus verteilt. Ein Tisch aus dem großen ehemaligen Tanzsaal; ein Stuhl aus dem Untergeschoss, in dem der Schimmel zentimenterdick und pelzig von den Wänden wächst, sodass es nach 10 Minuten schon schwerfällt zu atmen. Wenn sie nachts in den riesigen, gruseligen Gängen des Gebäudes, das noch aus der NS-Zeit stammt, unterwegs sind, verständigen Basti, Jannis und Max von YUUN sich mit Hilfe von drei kleinen bunten Spielzeug Walky-Talkies, um sich nicht zu verlieren.

Die schwedischen Experimental-Metaller VAK wurden für ihr vorheriges Album, dem top produzierten, doomig-groovigen Stoner/Sludge-Longplayer 'Lound Wind' hoch gelobt. Das britische Magazin Zero Tolerance schrieb, das Album sei "einer der Anwärter für das beste Stoner-Metal-Album 2019"! Gelobt für ihre Fähigkeit, mehr als nur einen Stil und ein Genre in ihre Musik zu integrieren, und sich dabei von anderen Genre-Bands und Künstlern inspirieren zu lassen, sollten Metalfans aufhorchen, wenn das kommende Album 'The Island' am 15.09. als CD und auf Vinyl (Black) beim Kult-Label Indie Rec. Das norwegische Jazz-Trio Bushman's Revenge verbindet auf spannende und mitreißende Weise die Energie des Rock mit der Freiheit des Jazz. Das 2003 gegründete Trio hatte zwei Jahrzehnte Zeit, um verschiedene Wege und Klänge zu erkunden und dabei erfolgreich ein fast schon eigenes Genre zu schaffen, das zwischen Jazz und Rock pendelt und von dem prägnanten Gitarrenspiel von Helte Hermansen dominiert wird. Mit in den Feuilletons gefeierten Alben und über 300 Live-Auftritten auf der ganzen Welt haben sich Bushman's Revenge mittlerweile einen Ruf erworben. Jazzwise kommentierte, dass sie "wahnsinnig gut! David Fricke vom Rolling Stone bezeichnete sie z.B. als ‚eine Marshall-Amp-Version von John Coltranes 'Interstellar Space'". 'All the Better for Seeing You' ist ihr mittlerweile 11. Die Musik der Band ist durch Dancefloor-Rhythmen und anzügliche Texte gekennzeichnet. Gleich die erste Single 'I’m Too Sexy' ging 1991 durch die Decke und verkaufte sich weltweit etwa drei Millionen Mal. In Großbritannien kletterte der Song bis auf # 2 der Charts, in den USA bis auf # 1. Damit schrieben Right Said Fred Musikgeschichte, denn seit den Beatles war es keiner britischen Band gelungen, drei Wochen in Folge den ersten Platz der US-amerikanischen Billboard-Charts mit einer Debütsingle zu belegen. Velvets In The Dark was written in the wake of the death of Lou Reed and centres around being on the outside of those things most important in your life. Koala Bears is a remarkable song with a structure like no other featuring two young fugitives, fixated and so in love who when caught have their code word for “we say nothing”

Einerseits fühlt man sich in einigen Momenten an Death Metal erinnert (jedoch nicht der alten Schule aus den USA), viel öfter klingt das jedoch noch Black Metal, aber lässt sich auch hier nicht komplett einordnen. The alternative mixes, pure treasure for all fans of both Diamond Head and the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, are supplemented by a set of bonus tracks originally recorded in 1980s, and rounding-out this ultimate edition are a set of deep and detailed notes on both the era and each song by Brian Tatler.

Neues Album des Liverpooler Singer-Songwriters Michael Heads (The Pale Fountains, Shack), vom NME als 'einer der begabtesten britischen Songschreiber seiner Generation' bezeichnet und von zahlreichen Songwriter-Kollegen verehrt. Stattdessen ging die Band ins Subsonic Society Studio in Oslo, wo sie auch ihre letzten Studioalben aufnahm, um ein Akustik-Set aufzuführen, das dann im Frühherbst 2020 gestreamt wurde. Neben akustischen Versionen von drei Songs aus 'A Day At The Beach' und den Klassikern 'Colours' und 'Sounds That I Hear' enthält diese Veröffentlichung den bisher unveröffentlichten Song
'Come on In' als Bonus. Das CD+DVD-Set enthält natürlich die komplette Session auch als Film.
Eine wertig ausgestattete 2LP-Version (180 Gr. Clear Vinyl) wird dann Ende Januer erscheinen.

THE CHARLATANS proudly announce their (Covid) delayed release of their 30th Anniversary tour and a career spanning best of entitled “A Head Full of Ideas’ Released on Then Recordings through Republic Of Music. ‘A Head Full of Ideas’ sums up their remarkable progress from 1990 Manchester scene hopefuls to one of the UK’s most enduring and best-loved bands. The accompanying tour begins at Belfast, Limelight 22/11/21 and finishes in Aberdeen on 20/12/21.

The band have notched up 13 Top 40 studio albums - three of them number ones - alongside 22 hit singles, four of them top 10. The rollercoaster highs have been accompanied by some shattering lows, any which one of them could have felled a less resilient band, from nervous breakdowns to near bankruptcy and the deaths of two founder members.

Somehow, they have not just carried on but adapted and transformed. The classic Charlatans sound - driving Hammond organ, Northern Soul and house-influenced rhythms, swaggering guitars and Tim Burgess’s sunny yet somehow yearning vocal - is instantly recognisable. And in spite of everything they have been through their music is now more relevant than ever, The Guardian described their last album, Different Days as “one of their best ever”.

Will Varley is pleased to announce new album “The Hole Around My Head”, his first new material since 2018. With it comes the single ‘Pushing Against Us’.

The album will be the first to be released on Yellow Cake, a brand new record label and artist protection entity set up by record producer Cameron McVey (internationally renowned for his work with Massive Attack, Portishead, Sugababes, and his wife Neneh Cherry). McVey produced Varley’s last album, 2018’s The Spirit Of Minnie, and the two stayed in touch. “When I started writing this new album I gave Cam a call and he told me he was starting a label, so things went from there,” Varley explains.

The singer songwriter self-produced the new album over the Winter lockdown in his makeshift studio on the Kent coast, playing most of the instruments himself. Two standout versions from the Lewin sisters, now available back-to-back on 45 for the first time. Classic soul turned reggae grooves produced by guitarist John Kpiaye and Adrian Joseph aka DJ Smokey Joe.Recorded in the mid-80s, a decade after the first advent of UK lovers rock and tailor-made for bass-heavy sound system playback, Christine Lewin’s cover of Tyrone Davis’s ‘In The Mood’ transformed his sensual after-hours classic into a female-led hit, that became a staple on Lovers playlists both then and now. Similarly, Tricia Dean’s sought-after cover of Jean Carn’s soul favourite ‘Don’t Let It Go To Your Head’ follows the same formula from Kpiaye and Smokey, synth-led rhythms reflecting the times rooted firmly in a local London scene.

The Temple Pillars Disappear Into the Clouds is the title of the new record from Bloody Head. Recorded mostly live at Stuck on a Name Studios by St. Ian Boult. Both wilder and more restrained than previous efforts. Punk? Noise rock? Psych? Sludge? All/none of the above, but the keen eared seeker of the weird may detect snippets of Les Rallizes Denudes, Kilslug, Brainbombs, Rudimentary Peni, Mainliner, Hawkwind, Donovan amongst the sonic morass. Lyrically it deals with big concepts, tumbling down. Dualism? Taoism? A beautiful garden or a broken jaw? Human endeavours losing track of themselves and getting lost in the clouds of their own creation. Ascend to Nirvana or fall into the Abyss. As above, so below....

Zenit is a jazz ensemble from Krems in Lower Austria, founded in 1976 by Hannes Treiber and Willi Langer. Their music was celebrated locally, but to reduce them to their local fame would be a shame: After all, their first two LPs, Stimmungswechsel (Change of Moods) and Früchte (Fruits), quickly gained them a much wider audience of discerning listeners. Arguably, however, Zenit's third and final LP Straight Ahead is the most special of their records. It initially came out in 1986 on the producer's label Spray Records, and is today one of the hardest-to-find Austrian jazz records. Its centrepiece is the infectious slow-motion disco piece 'Waiting,' with vocals by American jazz singer Linda Sharrock. Effortlessly bringing together pop, soul and new age vibes, this is a record that is as unique as it is difficult to date. Does it sound like from the 80s We're not sure. To our minds at least, it could also be from the future.

elbow return with their seventh studio album on 3rd February 2017. 'Little Fictions' was recorded in Scotland and Manchester and sees the band collaborate with the string players of The Hallé Orchestra, the Hallé Ancoats Community Choir, members of London Contemporary Voices and session drummer Alex Reeves. As with the previous three elbow albums it was produced by Craig Potter.
'Little Fictions' is emphatically a band album. Having written individually for its chart-topping predecessor, 'The Take Off and Landing of Everything', sessions this time were collective affairs, with all four members gathered initially in a house in Scotland before moving to Guy's attic in Prestwich and finalising recordings in the familiar setting of Blueprint studios, Salford.
'Little Fictions' is an upbeat album. All the band talk of the sessions being 'joyful', Mark summarises it as 'the sound of four people who love what they do and each other', of an album that came into being naturally and, at times even unconsciously. Lead single 'Magnificent (She Says)' was embraced for the joyous, thrilling piece of music it is, positive and outward looking. Mark never even considered his audible switch towards electric guitars, most notable on the psychedelic lushness of 'All Disco', until the very end of the process.
The departure of drummer Richard Jupp prior to commencing the writing and recording process in earnest saw early sessions characterised by new approaches to rhythm, with the band utilising percussive noises, sampling and loops to build tracks. The grooves that run through much of the album, from the go-go beats of 'Gentle Storm' through the jagged trip hop of 'Kindling' to the soulful 'Firebrand & Angel' represent both the band's widest musical palette and a newfound sense of experimentation borne from both necessity and desire. That desire fuelled the title track, an eight minute piece that is epic without at any point feeling excessive. As a shorthand for the album it is perfect, crossing musical genres and experimenting with sound in ways that demonstrate the confidence and enthusiasm of the band throughout the recording process.
'Little Fictions' is, therefore, more than just yet another brilliant elbow album. In many ways it marks the start of a new chapter for the band, characterised by a rediscovery of shared purpose in doing the thing that has always brought them together, the place that Mark describes as 'the creative space where we all meet'.

Oh yes! First ever official reissue of the positively sublime and very rare Butterfly LP, recorded in Tokyo in 1979 by Japanese songstress Kimiko Kasai and jazz legend Herbie Hancock.

Due to it's super-rare status as a Japan-only release, this exquisite collection of covers never got the recognition it deserved at the time, despite incredibly inspired performances from Kimiko, Herbie and the supremely talented musicians assembled for the project. From heavenly drummer Alphonse Mouzon and renowned organist Webster Lewis to bassist Paul Jackson, reedman Bennie Maupin and the master percussionist Bill Summers, the legendary performers crafted amazingly good vocal versions of Herbie / Headhunters jazz-funk. Unsurprisingly, it has been heavily in demand for many years.

The LP opens with Kimiko's highly desirable version of "I Thought It Was You", an elegant take on Herbie's own anthem. Other superb re-workings include the delicately soulful "Butterfly", jazzy groover "Sunlight", the smooth and sexy "Tell Me A Bedtime Story" and the beautiful ballads "Maiden Voyage" and "Harvest Time". A wonderful example of perfectly understated and masterful jazz-funk soul fusion that shouldn't be missed, the set closes with a jaw-dropping version of Stevie Wonder's "As".

This lovingly curated reissue enables a long overdue reappraisal of this hitherto unavailable masterpiece. The stunning artwork which adorned the original jacket - complete with OBI strip and sumptuous
4 page folded insert - has been faithfully restored. Simon Francis' sensitive mastering elevates the sound throughout and, as ever, it has been pressed at a reassuringly weighty 180g. Essential.

Edna Wright's idiosyncratic "Oops!" is one of the most sublime vocal refrains in soul music history. Anchoring its host album's leadoff cut, it sets the tone for a uniquely satisfying modern soul LP. Indeed, whilst many of its ilk come laden with filler, Wright's one solo record is an exercise in elegant restraint, a concise killer.

Originally released in 1977 on RCA, this rare and sought-after album followed the 1973 disbanding of Edna's much-loved Honey Cone. Produced by her husband, legendary producer/songwriter Greg Perry, the album was somewhat of a risk, a deep soul album released during the period when disco was altering the landscape of popular music. And perhaps inevitably, despite the stellar production and spine-tingling vocals throughout, the album glided gracefully under the radar, spawning only one single and seeing no chart action.

That single - the magnificent title-track - soon became a notorious rare groove stepper in its own right. However, in the years since, it has become a crate diggers classic. Its fame was elevated among hip-hop heads when Prince Paul memorably looped the shimmering intro when crafting the melodic hook for De La Soul's late-summer-stunner "Pass The Plugs", a wistfully melancholic back-porch nostalgia trip. And, more recently, Leon Vynehall liberally lifted the same intro for his sepia-tinged "Midnight On Rainbow Road" to augment the excellent Rush Hour compilation Musik For Autobahns 2.

Yet this album is so much more than its most famous song. An assuredly lean masterpiece from start-to-finish, the album features a further six dynamite tracks of warm, smooth soul. As such, it's an impossible task to choose certain tracks to highlight alongside the mighty title track. Throughout, Edna's strikingly mature vocals are wonderful, proudly stepping out with a sophisticated groove reminiscent of Jean Carn or Gloria Scott, whilst Greg Perry's gorgeous string-drenched backdrops add a rich depth. So much so, many of the other tracks have been sampled by producers with impeccable taste, from 9th Wonder to The Alchemist for songs featuring Nas and Talib Kweli.

Following her glowing role in the acclaimed documentary 20 Feet From Stardom, we pray this long overdue reissue will allow further light to shine on Edna. Officially licensed and beautifully remastered for vinyl by celebrated engineer Simon Francis, it has been pressed on audiophile 180g vinyl for the first time and features the original iconic artwork. Each copy includes a printed inner sleeve with a sumptuous black & white photo, full lyrics and heartfelt notes from Edna herself.

Denmark's WhoMadeWho have always been hard to pin down. Their music sounding as effortless as it is stylistically and sonically adventurous. Fusing pop and disco memes with punk paraphernalia, the genre-bending trio made up of Jeppe Kjellberg, Tomas Høffding and Tomas Barford honed their skills on stage and in the studio, releasing a series of bestselling records topped off by their 2011 mini album "Knee Deep" on Kompakt.

Canadian quartet BADBADNOTGOOD take on creating the ultimate late night' selection of tracks from their record collections, set for release on 28th July 2017. The original trio of Matthew Tavares, Alex Sowinski and Chester Hansen formed while studying music at Toronto's Humber College (they've recently added Leland Whitty to the line-up). A shared appreciation of hip hop and instrumental covers of Gucci Mane and Earl Sweatshirt suggested a worldly outlook and reciprocated love from Tyler The Creator and Ghostface Killah, which whom they made 2015's Sour Soul.

This is an international effort: Velly Joonas' Estonian version of 'Feel Like Makin' Love', Kiki Gyan, Admas and Francis Bebey representing Africa (Ghana, Ethiopia and Cameroon respectively), Les Prospection from France, Scots' Boards Of Canada and fellow Canucks River Tiber and Charlotte Day Wilson.

Finally, there's the no-small-matter of the Late Night Tales cover version, in which BADBADNOTGOOD take on Andy Shauf's 'To You' is turned into a mournful delight. while the Queen Of Siam herself, Lydia Lunch, delivers a sexual sermon involving only you, her and Jim Beam.

We were really excited to have the chance to put together a Late Night Tales compilation, it's a great organisation. We decided to use it as a vehicle to show everyone all the amazing music we have gotten to experience by touring and meeting new people. Every track on this comp was either shown to us by an incredible person or made by one of our friends. We also included a little cover of a song by one of our favourite current musicians, Andy Shauf.

These artists, as well as many, many others, have infuenced us to create and kept our deep love of music alive. This mix will keep you company on a quiet night by yourself or with friends. London's elusive Lukid has never been one for convention. In the few short years between 2007-2012, he struck out on a seemingly effortlessly impeccable run of releases on fellow iconoclast Darren 'Actress' Cunningham's mighty Werkdiscs imprint, as well as his own label Glum. Those albums and EPs flaunted genre distinctions and embraced a freewheeling approach to melody, rhythm and atmosphere that felt at once exotically psychotropic and yet grounded in a resolutely english eccentricity. Thus, they feel like especially-prescient recent classics that continue to find new fans.

In the intervening years, Lukid's energy has been poured into his stunning monthly transmissions on NTS while his output has been sparse aside from a pair of mindbending EPs via Liberation Technologies and Glum, respectively. Those radio sets serve as a telling blueprint for his contribution to the ongoing Arcola project. From low slung Memphis rap mixtape cuts to clattering industrial cassette rarities, turbulent grime and outsider synth hallucinations there is a warped palette that comes vibrantly alive across the four included tracks here. The stormy bump and spectral melancholy of 'The Drip' and 'Clappers' seems to wed them together as thematic bedfellows across both sides of the EP while 'Head Shrinker' tries to squeeze an overcast psych-pop opus out of a rack of malfunctioning hardware. Spit out the other side of this ride you exit to the chopped-and-screwed goth grime of 'Conked Out', having had your brain smeared with the uniquely viscous ectoplasm that only Lukid can excrete. Boofy hails from Bristol's fine heritage of progressive bass music producers. Having made a name for himself as part of the Bandulu crew and his own Sector 7 Sounds imprint, as well as dropping killer releases on Innamind Recordings and No Corner.

Lucky for us, he's saved some of his deepest, heaviest hitting cuts for Tectonic! This 4 track EP is a masterclass in minimal effectiveness, with rhythms ready to set the dancefloor off that reveal ever deeper subtitles on repeated listens.

'Back In The Box' sets the pace with swinging hats, thumping kicks and a bass line that will sound like an earthquake on the right system! Follow up for 'Herbie' which takes things in dissonant direction, before dropping hard and with authority.

Flip then for the EP title track, an exploration around the paranoid edges of a creative mind, stretched to capacity. Finally the EP closes up with 'Perfunktion', a rolling rhythm with a lighter mood, somewhat reminiscent of Mala circa 2006. Quality stuff from an excellent producer who is going from strength to strength right now.
