Chloe Lula Announces Syntax: A Singular Vision Connecting Ambient Meditations and Hypnotic Techno San Francisco-born, Berlin-based artist Chloe Lula announces the launch of Syntax, a record label that codifies her unique position within the electronic music landscape. Arriving as the definitive home for her work as a DJ, producer and cellist, Syntax follows her established residency at Tresor and acclaimed releases on foundational labels including Mord, Blueprint and the highly esteemed experimental imprint Subtext. Her label is the culmination of a decade spent as both a participant in and a defining voice in the scene—a space where Lula’s deep and cohesive vision of electronic music finally converge. The label’s name refers to the arrangement of elements to forge new meaning, a philosophy Lula applies to her singular musical grammar. Whether through her slow-burning, exacting techno or her instrumental compositions, Lula’s work is characterized by a patience that understands nuance and counterpoint. This vision is reflected in the label's structure: releases will arrive in thematic series that bypass traditional genre markers to focus on atmosphere, immersion and hypnotica. The imprint’s debut, SYN-PLS01, marks the beginning of the Pulse series, a collection specifically engineered for the floor. For this inaugural release, Lula took recordings from Swiss electroacoustic composer Alexandra Bellon as a jumping-off point, molding Bellon's architectural sense of space into six tracks of driving techno. Future series will expand the catalog into ambient and instrumental territories, reconciling formal acoustic tradition with the raw functionality of the electronic landscape. With a career spanning editorial leadership at Resident Advisor and her work shaping the dialogue of the culture through her writing and interviews, Lula brings a deep, analytical knowledge to her craft. Syntax is the connective tissue between her work in the booth and her critical contributions to the field—a project that formalizes her distinct perspective as both a curator and a creator. Armed with guitars, pipes, samples and bric-a-brac, it’d be easy for the Sprigs to succumb to a totally romanticised nostalgia for an imagined British folkloric tradition. There’s enough of it going around. Instead, the gang create a ramshackle, ruddy faced blend of introspective hibernation, real-world anxiety and some absolutely knee slapping, joy inducing tunes. It’s a masterwork of folk collage - where beautiful straight-to-tape guitar sketches are cut up amongst British labour history with the help of Leon Rosselson and Ash Reid, giving way to waves of depression and relief in equal measure. The terms “nursery rhymes” and “children’s songs” may give rise to visions of idyllic innocence and the charms of childhood, but "Play Nursery Rhymes and Children's Songs" by Tokiyo Ooto & Orhythmo, their first release on EM Records, brings forth quite different aural imagery: this is an eerie and unsettling sonic picture book which hints at the darkness and mystery which form the hidden heart of many traditional songs and rhymes. The length of the songs provides a hint: each piece delves deeply into the latent uncanniness of the music, with superficial innocence gradually displaced as electric guitar, bass, field recordings and concrete sounds draw the listener into a chilly forest, while Tokiyo Ooto’s voice croons dark “lullabies for adults,” blending elements of folk, slowcore and dream pop. The Tokiyo Ooto & Orhythmo duo formed in 2023, releasing their first album in 2024. This release updates two pieces from the first album, and also includes a traditional Japanese children’s song from Shiga Prefecture and a masterpiece for children by composer Yasushi Akutagawa. Both musicians are Osaka-based: Ooto is a guitarist and singer-songwriter who also works in band and solo contexts; Orhythmo is a bassist with hardcore punk roots who focuses on improvisation, drone, noise and ambient sound. This release is available on CD, vinyl and DL; physical versions feature a printed insert with Japanese and English lyrics. The evocative cover is by Yoshitomo Ano.

Diese Techniken und Traditionen werden erlernt und mit zeitgenössischen Technologien kombiniert, um neue Potenziale zu erschließen. So wie Alex Sokolov zu ihrer Waffe steht, so steht Jean-Luc Guionnet zu seinem Saxophon. The Way I See It puts Raphael Saadiq's love of 60s soul on full display, with Saadiq stating it was "the culmination of a lifetime of experiences informed by the music I grew up on." Recorded on vintage equipment, the set features Motown session musicians, guest appearances from neo-soul singer Joss Stone, R&B vocalist CJ Hilton, New Orleans collective The Rebirth Brass Band, a remixed bonus track from Jay-Z, and even a guest appearance by Stevie Wonder. Throughout the recording process Saadiq immersed himself in the aesthetics and styles of the decade, watching footage of Al Green, The Four Tops, Gladys Knight & The Pops, and others for further inspiration. The end result is an upbeat collection of songs, ranging from the romantic to the mournful, but frequently beaming with hope and positivity. The Way I See It racked up Grammy nominations for Best R&B Album, Best Traditional R&B Vocal Performance, and Best R&B Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals. To this day it is considered one of the essential records of the classic soul revival, and one of Saadiq's finest career achievements.

Beginning life as a trio in London, 2003, the original line-up consisted of Allison Brice (vocals, flute), Richard Olson (acoustic guitar) and Ben Phillipson (guitar, mandolin) before expanding the following year to include the rhythm section of Mark Nicholas (bass) and Karl Sabino (drums, autoharp) and finally Alison Cotton (viola).
This being the mid zeros, the independent music scene in the UK was reluctant to embrace a sun-dazed folk band but this, their sole album, has gradually feathered a bed of affection amongst international folk fans. Twenty years on, the album is now rightfully seen as a trailblazer for the myriad alternative/psych folk bands that emerged in its wake.
Andy Childs who signed the band originally takes up the story. “I first heard their music on a cover mounted CD with the much missed Comes With A Smile magazine and as far as I could tell no-one was making music like this anymore, certainly not with such panache and confidence. To my jaded ears it all sounded so uninhibited - old weird folk songs, Americana, original psych-folk, minimalist drones. Great melodies and all six of them could sing! A joyous, unfettered sound that could in one moment conjure up flashes of The Byrds and then effortlessly the spirit of Velvet Underground would drift through. They even covered a Spacemen 3 song. I loved the fact that they had the aplomb to tackle traditional folk songs like Lady Margaret and Flowers In The Forest and not be afraid to stamp their own identity on them.
Signing them to the Hannibal label was straightforward. If anything the album somehow sounds fresh and undated, even better than it did in the day when perhaps eclecticism was out of synch with the times; its subtleties have become more apparent.”

BABON is a psychedelic instrumental band from Indonesia, formed in 2023 by Wahyudi T. Raupp, Rayi Raditia, and guitarist Rori Jiwa Putra. Their music blends traditional Indonesian genres such as Keroncong and Dangdut with global influences like Middle Eastern grooves, Latin rhythms, Spaghetti Western motifs, and Afro-funk, creating a sound they call "Tropical Desert" music. Their debut album, Tropical Desert, follows the 2024 release of the singles "Desert Rose" and "TNT" on London-based label Batov Records. Beyond their genre-bending sound, BABON is deeply rooted in environmental advocacy, using instrumental music and visual storytelling to address ecological issues. They are currently producing a live session featuring four tracks from the album, set against cinematic footage highlighting Indonesia's natural landscapes and environmental challenges.

BABON's distinctive sound has earned them strong international recognition, with radio play from major stations including BBC Radio 3 and Soho Radio (UK), RBB Radioeins and Byte FM (Germany), CBC Radio One (Canada), Triple R and 2SER (Australia), and WYEP and KALX (USA). Their 7-inch vinyl release was nearly sold out, further signaling their growing global appeal. The album's cover and packaging were created by Indonesian retro surrealist Christian Candra, contributing to the band's cohesive artistic vision. With Tarabesque, his powerful new album, Firas Zreik delivers his boldest and most visionary work to date. Fearlessly placing the kanun—the shimmering Mediterranean harp—at the center of a jazz quartet, a hybrid ensemble, and an Arab Takht ensemble, Zreik reimagines the instrument as both a rhythmic engine and melodic force. Discrepant presents the LP edition of Tales from the Source, the original film soundtrack by Bear Bones, Lay Low and Laszlo Umbreit.

Originally composed for Belgian-Congolese artist Léonard Pongo’s 2024 film of the same name, this release reworks the film's audio into a continuous, fluid listening experience.

The album is built on a direct contrast between heavy electronic manipulation and raw environmental audio. Laszlo Umbreit captured the foundation of the record through field recordings and additional electronics, focusing on the quiet, tactile sounds of water, riverbeds, and natural spaces. These recordings were then processed and expanded by Bear Bones, Lay Low, who layered the tracks using synthesizers, samplers and various effects processors.

Rather than acting as a standard background score, the music functions as a detailed piece of environmental sound art. The tracks are edited to blend into one another without distinct gaps, mirroring the slow pace and visual flow of the film. Through the use of tape loops, filtering, and electronic processing, the natural landscapes are systematically distorted and rearranged. The result is a dark, slow-moving suite of electroacoustic music that strips away traditional melody to focus entirely on texture,

Music From Memory presents 'Mood Programs – Extended Play', a two-track release by LA MARR, a new project conceived by Ron Trent. Representing the first in an ongoing series of releases on Music From Memory, ‘Mood Programs - Extended Play’ opens a new chapter within Trent’s deep and continually evolving body of work, rooted in mood-driven composition, spatial depth and the emotional resonance of sound within physical space.

Influenced by ambient and environmental music, New Age, dub traditions, New Wave, Krautrock and HiFi sound system culture, LA MARR reflects many of the formative ideas that informed Trent’s evolving approach to sound and sonic architecture from the early 1980s onward. Rather than revisiting these influences nostalgically, the project recontextualises them through a contemporary production language, balancing analog warmth with precision and spatial depth.

Developed through years of sonic experimentation and research into the physical and psychological qualities of sound, LA MARR extends Ron Trent’s long-standing interest in the relationship between rhythm, acoustics and human connection. Built through a combination of analog processes and contemporary computer-assisted production, the project explores warmth, resonance, depth and sonic clarity through carefully sculpted environments of tone and texture.

Gently unfolding within a spacious, ambient-leaning framework, 'Mood Programs – Extended Play' moves beyond passive background listening toward something more intentional and immersive. Across both tracks, ‘Good Magic’ and ‘Clear’, layers of hypnotic synthesizer arpeggios and gently floating pads gradually unfold alongside organic percussion and subtle low-end movement, creating compositions that feel simultaneously meditative, physical and emotionally responsive. Sound is treated not simply as musical information, but as an environmental force capable of shaping perception, mood and awareness within a room.

Korlakang are four young friends from Thonburi, the quieter, canal-laced western bank of Bangkok, where temple bells and river rhythms shape everyday life. Ancient Infinity Orchestra return with their third album, It’s Always About Liberation, a new record that deepens the vision of their acclaimed recent work while moving into darker, more searching emotional territory.

Conceived as a partner to It’s Always About Love, this new body of work shares its predecessor’s generosity and spiritual openness, but carries a different charge. Where the previous album focused on healing and warmth, It’s Always About Liberation is largely animated by struggle, perseverance and the desire for transformation while still offering a path to betterment. It is music made in full awareness of a fractured world, yet unwilling to surrender to it.

Like It’s Always About Love the album title draws inspiration from words spoken by Moor Mother during their 2024 We Out Here festival performance that deeply affected bandleader Ozzy Moysey: “It’s always about love / It’s always about liberation.” Those twin ideas became a framework for the two albums Ancient Infinity Orchestra were creating. If one album explored love as repair, this one explores liberation as movement, continually striving toward freedom, clarity and deeper connection.
The 16-member ensemble is led by double bassist and composer Ozzy, with a distinctive line-up that explains their sound better than any artificial genre divisions: two double basses, harp, saxophones, clarinets, violin, viola, cello, oboe, flutes, mandolin, congas, piano, drum kit, with bells, shakers and other percussion instruments scattered on the floor of live sets and recording sessions, ready for members to use whenever the spirit takes them.

This orchestration, and the overlap between membership and friendship, gives Ancient Infinity Orchestra a sound that is at once expansive and intimate, earthy, and cosmic, constantly shifting yet grounded in shared intention. The attention to intention and the inviting sonic world connects the music to artists ranging from Alabaster dePlume to Gondwana label boss Matthew Halsall.
Gradually, the Orchestra became a grounding force in the emerging jazz scene in Leeds, bringing together individuals from different musical backgrounds co-founding the Café Oto-inspired Limpet Club or co-hosting the monthly Sonic Plunge (‘a platform for adventurous experimentation’) and co-founding the Leeds Improvisers Orchestra. Additionally, the ensemble acted as a bridge between musicians in Brighton and Leeds, after Ozzy spent a stint back on the south coast between 2020 and 2022.

Their debut, River of Light, was a vibrant celebration of togetherness recorded in three days and released on Gondwana in 2023. A Maida Vale session for Jamie Cullum’s BBC Radio 2 show brought them to a broader audience, as did bookings at North Sea Jazz Festival and Gretchen, Berlin. Since then, Ancient Infinity Orchestra has become a by-word for music that could be framed as ‘spiritual jazz’. Whilst Ozzy avoids the phrase when describing his music, he’s crystal clear that his heroes are associated with those words – citing Art Ensemble of Chicago, Pharoah Saunders, Coltrane (Alice and John), and Don Cherry as major influences.

Across trance-like meditations, rising grooves, moments of grief and collective uplift, It’s Always About Liberation speaks to the battle within the mind as much as the inequalities of the wider world. It acknowledges the darkness but lets connection and creativity have the last word Ancient Infinity Orchestra is a gathering of voices, traditions, and energies converging into something timeless. Their music is a journey inward and outward, always reaching toward the universal.

Lello Di Franco aka L.D.F. leans fully into his curatorial instincts here, and the result is less a traditional “producer ep” and more a cohesive, late-night DJ narrative. World Beats Vol. 2 doesn’t try to grab you instantly it unfolds, patiently, like a deep set in a small, packed club where the focus is on groove rather than spectacle. The collaborations are the real backbone: Byron the Aquarius injects looseness and jazz DNA his touch is immediately recognizable in the swung rhythms and slightly off-grid keys. These moments feel alive, almost jam-session-like. Tilman brings polish and restraint. His contributions tend to be more hypnotic, smoothing transitions and keeping the flow meditative. Fire Drums II close the ep, an electronic/percussive track with a tribal and hypnotic feel. It combines intense drum rhythms with dance and worldbeat sounds, creating an energetic and ritualistic atmosphere. Downtown Boys have pushed relentlessly forward as an artistic and political project since their founding. Singer Victoria Marie and guitarist/singer Joey La Neve DeFrancesco first met at union meetings while working together at a hotel in Providence, RI, writing many of the band's early songs about labor organizing and exploitative workplaces. The album was recorded by Scott Evans (Kowloon Walled City, Sumac, and Great Falls) at Studio Litho in Seattle during three weekends this winter, and mixed in three days just six weeks before release at Evan's Antisleep Audio in Oakland.

Neurosis will play their first show in seven years on the traditional lands of the Blackfeet Nation in Montana as part of Fire in the Mountains festival by special invitation of Firekeeper Alliance, a non-profit dedicated to reducing youth suicide in Indian Country.

At the age of 72, "Evil" Graham Lee, the legendary pedal steel pioneer and veteran of the iconic Australian band The Triffids, delivers his first ever album under his own name titled ‘I Think I’m Alone Now’. In addition to his work with The Triffids, Graham’s place in ambient history was cemented in 1990 when his evocative pedal steel became the soulful centerpiece of The KLF’s masterpiece, Chill Out (specifically on the highlight “Baltimore to Fair Play”).

I Think I’m Alone Now is a profound exploration of the instrument's emotional range, blending traditional country infused melodies with vast, reverb drenched ambient textures. The album spans six tracks, anchored by the Side B title track, a 15 minute textural piece that leans heavily into the ambient genre. From the delicate melancholy of "Seeking Beauty in Sadness" to the curious abstraction of "Nursery in the Beehive," Lee uses his pedal steel and an array of pedals to sculpt unique, haunting soundscapes that exist between tradition and the avant garde.

Reflecting on a forty year friendship that began when The Triffids served as the backing band for Drummond’s solo debut, The Man, Drummond provides a personal and poignant context for this long awaited solo bow.

Was dabei entstand, war unmittelbar: Anstatt sich langsam an die Zusammenarbeit heranzutasten, wurden die beiden von ihr vorangetrieben - sie schufen Songs in Echtzeit und reagierten auf die Instinkte des anderen, ohne diese übermäßig zu erklären. Es gab keine starre Rollenverteilung. Der eine brachte eine Idee ein, der andere antwortete darauf. Eine Melodie suggerierte einen Rhythmus; ein Rhythmus formte einen Text neu. Auf ,Helado Tropical" ist eine spürbare Abwesenheit von Zwängen zu bemerken: nicht nur musikalisch, sondern auch konzeptionell. Beide Künstler teilen einen langjährigen Widerstand gegen die Erwartungen, die oft an lateinamerikanische Musik gestellt werden: wie sie klingen sollte, wie sie sich anfühlen sollte, welche Geschichten sie erzählen sollte.
