Pink Siifu’s latest release, GUMBO!, is another sprawling Afrocentric vision from one of the boldest voices in contemporary rap. Following up on 2020’s NEGRO, the album’s songs are as rich and varied as its titular stew. Siifu’s boundless style makes for an unpredictable but rewarding ride across the album’s 18 tracks, as he explores the diverse sounds of his influences and breaks new ground with a unique class of co-stars.
Siifu, born Livingston Matthews and raised between Alabama and Cincinnati, has already notched a conspicuous list of collaborations in his burgeoning career, from legendary producer the Alchemist to Australian electronic group the Avalanches. Siifu also embodies various inspirations through a range of alter-egos, often producing under the moniker “iiye,” or as half of the duo B. Cool-Aid with Ahwlee, both of which appear on GUMBO!.
The variety of guest features and production on GUMBO! only elevates Siifu’s ability to push the boundaries of genre and song structure. “Voicemails Uptown” (produced by Soulection’s Monte Booker) is the second of two back-to-back posse cuts, sporting five plus vocalists each. “Lng hair dnt care,” the album’s first single, was produced by Ted Kamal, who first garnered attention for his outside-the-box edits of contemporary rap staples. And while several of the album’s tracks are well within his bag, the jazzy, drumless loop on “Fk U Mean/Hold Me Dwn” could’ve been a cut off of his collab album with Virginia rapper Fly Anakin, FlySiifu’s.
Though rife with standout tracks, GUMBO! is greater than the sum of its parts. Siifu’s ambitious range and impressive pool of features create an otherworldly listening experience. Overall, it reflects an intense desire for self-expression and creative growth, one which he shares with many of his influences. Like Outkast, Sun Ra, Baraka, or Bad Brains, his unique soundscapes re-imagine a genre without restrictions, breaking new ground in search of artistic and personal freedom.

Stephen Steinbrink discovered a short YouTube video of a street magician who approaches a highschooler walking home in Barstow, California. “Here, let me show you my idea,” he says, as he places a quarter on the kid’s hand. The magician performs some relaxed flourishes, and the coin vanishes. In silence, the kid stares at his hand at the nothing where there once, indisputably, was something, until his wonder finds a single word: “Cool.” The title of Disappearing Coin, the new album from Oakland songwriter Stephen Steinbrink, comes from this short clip. “When I look at it now,” he says, “I relate to the kid, who’s obviously uneasy in his body, and going through the experience of being a teenager in the early 2000s growing up in a bleak desert town like I did. I also relate to the coin, an inanimate disc of possibility. And I relate to the magician, an absurd facilitator of sending what is tactile and concrete into the wispy conceptual realm.” “I’ve watched it probably a hundred times,” he says. “It cracked me up but also blew my mind open the feeling of wonder I experienced watching this video became a guide as I navigated new ways of staying in the realm of what’s both real and magical.” Following the 2018 release of Utopia Teased, Steinbrink completed an apprenticeship in the nearly-lost art of Stained Glass, becoming a glazier at a studio that over three years, fully restored the enormous 90-year-old windows in San Francisco’s Grace Cathedral. He committed to his Buddhist study, beginning lay monastic training before the process was thwarted by the pandemic. He dove deeper into music production for other artists, engineering two albums by Boy Scouts released on Anti- Records in 2018 and 2021. Steinbrink delighted in the way these pursuits pulled at the thread of ego’s tapestry and decentralized him from his craft, allowing him to embody a new role as a creative caretaker engaging in practices that felt communal and restorative. “As I slowly began writing for myself again, I tried to imbue my new songs with this sense of playfulness and wonder I felt while exploring these other interests.” He says. Feeling unlocked from the pressures of perfection that he often felt in his earlier work, creating Disappearing Coin felt buoyant and healing. “The album feels like an integration of all of my past musical selves zeroing in on the present,” Steinbrink explains, “I felt free to explore new ways of writing, through different perspectives, experimenting with fictional songwriting, visual archetypal language, and total collaboration.” This “total collaboration” was a joyous new venture after years of solo performing and recording. The album can be seen as a 42 minute session of show and tell, the manifestation of Steinbrink repeating the mantra of “Here, let me show you my idea” to himself over and over. Disappearing Coin is at once a welcome return for the veteran Steinbrink and the debut of a totally new artist, one who has found a new path to himself with new goals of openness, curiosity, and self-acceptance. “Recalls the magic pop purity of Arthur Russell...its minimalism manages to feel enlightened and transformative.” PITCHFORK // “Melodic and self-assured. Studioalbum von Van Morrison.
Auf ihrem zweiten Album für Deutsche Grammophon widmet sich Mari Samuelsen den Werken von 13 Komponistinnen. Einige Stücke wurden für sie geschrieben, andere neu bearbeitet, darunter Musik von Hildegard von Bingen, Beyoncé, Hildur Gudnaðóttir und Anna Meredith
Unerschrocken ist die Mischung aus dynamischer und origineller Musik auf Mari Samuelsens neuester Aufnahme für Deutsche Grammophon; um Licht und Leben geht es der Geigerin. Entstanden ist das Album Lys, norwegisch für Licht. 13 Komponistinnen sind zu hören – von Hildegard von Bingen bis Hildur
Guðnadóttir –, eigens in Auftrag gegebene Werke ebenso wie neue Arrangements existierender Stücke. 14 Tracks, mal meditativ, mal animierend, über ein Phänomen, das wir zum Leben brauchen. Das abwechslungsreiche Programm der Norwegerin spielt mit zarten Nuancen des Lichts und entwirft so Musik voller Schattierungen in Ausdruck und Gefühl. Lys erscheint am 20. Mai 2022.
Die gemeinsamen Alben und Auftritte des legendären Filmkomponisten John Williams und der Stargeigerin Anne-Sophie Mutter gehören zweifellos zu den Highlights der letzten Jahre. Dieses Album ist das neueste Ergebnis der langjährigen Freundschaft und Zusammenarbeit der weltweit gefeierten Künstler: Mutter spielt das Zweite Violinkonzert von John Williams, das der Komponist für sie geschrieben hat. Williams sagt über sein Violinkonzert: „Für mich geht es in diesem Stück vor allem um Anne-Sophie Mutter und
um die Violine als Meisterwerk der Geigenbaukunst. (…) letztlich wurde diese große Künstlerin selbst zu meiner Inspiration und Antriebskraft.“ Die vorliegende Aufnahme für die Deutsche Grammophon, mit dem Boston Symphony Orchestra unter der Leitung von Williams selbst, entstand kurz nach der Uraufführung
des Zweiten Violinkonzertes im Juli 2021 in Tanglewood. Der Boston Globe schrieb: „Selbst in dieser Uraufführung trug Mutter das Solo wie eine alte Freundin und formte jede Phrase mit Absicht und Elan.“
Dem lyrischen und sehr persönlichen Konzert folgen auf dem Album drei fantastische Zugaben: Beliebte Filmthemen von Williams, u.a. aus Star Wars und Indiana Jones, die er alle komplett neu für Anne-Sophie
Mutter arrangiert hat. In diversen Details des Violinkonzertes, aber auch in den schönen Filmmelodien, spiegelt sich die Ausdruckskraft von Mutters Spiel ebenso wie ihre virtuose Brillanz und die lyrische Wärme ihres Geigentons.
Mit dem Debütalbum „Old Time Feeling“ stellte sich 2020 die amerikanische Sängerin, Songschreiberin und Gitarristin S.G. Goodman vor. Goodman steht knietief in der Tradition des Southern Rock und verbindet ihn mit Country, Singer-Songwriter-Kultur und hier und da auch mal knackigem Rock and Roll. In ihren Texten legt die Künstlerin den Finger dahin wo es weh tut und in ihrer Musik flirtet sie des Öfteren so charmant mit Indie-Sounds, dass man sie keineswegs als konservativ oder „retro“ bezeichnen kann, auch
wenn sie musikalisch an klassische Vorbilder anknüpft. Der Rolling Stone legte sie beispielsweise allen Fans
von PJ Harvey ans Herz.
„Teeth Marks“ ist S.G. Goodmans zweites Album auf Verve Forecast, wie der Vorgänger wurde es produziert von Jim James von der Band My Morning Jacket. James über Goodman: „Ich denke, sie könnte
eine wichtige Rolle bei dem Heilungsprozess spielen, den wir unbedingt brauchen. Sie ist der lebende Beweis dafür, dass wir sein können, wer wir wollen, egal woher wir kommen.“
Der britische Singer-Songwriter James Bay ist nicht zurück zu halten: Am 8. Juli veröffentlicht er sein lang-ersehntes drittes Studioalbum „Leap“ und springt voller Mut ins Kalte.
Mit ganzen zwölf Songs berührt er Herzen weltweit und macht seinem Gold-ausgezeichneten Debütalbum „Chaos and the Calm“ ehrwürdige Konkurrenz. Auch ihn rissen die letzten Jahre mit – persönliche Umstände, die Pandemie, Ängste, Selbstzweifel: Alles Gefühle, die er eigentlich nie so teilen wollte oder konnte waren auf einmal die neue Normalität. Mit „Leap“ wagt er jedoch nun den Absprung und verarbeitet das Geschehene mit motivierenden, hoffnungsvollen und von Liebe geprägten Songs.
Spätestens seit seinem Top 10-Hit „Hold Back The River“ ist James nicht mehr zu unterschätzen und zählt mehrere BRIT Award Auszeichnungen, GRAMMY Nominierungen, sowie den deutschen ECHO-Preis der Kategorie „Best International Newcomer“ zu seinen vielen musikalischen Erfolgen.

1972, vor fünfzig Jahren, veröffentlichte Hammondorgel- und Acid-Jazz-Legende Ronnie Foster sein BlueNote-Debüt „Two Headed Freap“, von dem nicht nur der Track „Mystic Brew“ ein erstaunliches Eigenleben entwickelte, spätestens nachdem A Tribe Called Quest ihn als Sample-Grundlage für ihren Song „Electric Relaxation“ auf dem 1994er Album „Midnight Marauders“ benutzten.
Die neun Songs auf „Reboot“, Ronnie Fosters Rückkehr zum Blue-Note-Label, klingen gradlinig, kraftvoll und frisch wie eh und je. Seine Art von Soul-Jazz hat in den letzten Jahrzehnen diverse Revivals gefeiert und beweist hier, dass sie eigentlich nie aus der Mode gekommen ist. In den Linernotes widmet Foster die Aufnahmen seinem 2021 verstorbenen „Bruder, Freund und Helden Dr. Lonnie Smith, einem der Weltbesten auf der Hammond B3-Orgel“.
Im August 2021 spielte Evgeny Kissin vor ausverkauftem Haus der Salzburger Festspiele ein frenetisch gefeiertes Solo-Rezital mit außergewöhnlichem Programm. Deutsche Grammophon veröffentlicht den Livemitschnitt als Doppelalbum mit Kompositionen von Chopin, Berg, Gershwin und spannenden Zugaben von Mendelssohn und Kissin selbst.

Saxophonist Charles Lloyd ist musikalischer Freigeist und Jazz-Visionär, seit mehr als sechs Jahrzehnten
Unikum der internationalen Szene und mit 84 Jahren noch immer im Vollbesitz seiner kreativen Kräfte.
Mit „Trios: Chapel“ eröffnete Lloyd im Juli 2022 ein ungewöhnliches Trio-Projekt, das insgesamt drei
thematisch zusammenhängende Alben umfasst, die ihn jeweils in einer anderen Trio-Besetzung präsentieren - ein „Trio of Trios“. Das erste Album nahm er mit Gitarrist Bill Frisell und Bassist Thomas Morgan
auf, das jetzt erscheinende zweite, ”Trios: Ocean” mit Gitarrist Anthony Wilson und Pianist Gerald Clayton, und das dritte, „Trios: Sacred Thread“ (erscheint am 18. November), mit Gitarrist Julian Lage und
Schlagzeuger Zakir Hussain.
Heller Tag is the debutalbum of Berlin-based jazz collective Conic Rose.
The young musicians come from the most diverse musical backgrounds: their other projects include names such as arena-filling German pop stars Clueso or Samy Deluxe but also Jazz legends such as Michael Wollny or Joy Denalane.
What connects them is their love to explore, create, redefine and effortlessly move between abstraction and accessibility, high quality sound and the beauty of the imperfect - interweaving electronic elements, cinematic jazz, vibey soundscapes and hints of art rock with eclectic, zeitgeisty influences.
Their releases so far as well as the few shows they played on the back of their debut EP (2020) exceeded all expectations, attracting the attention of industry professionals all the way from the UK or USA.
All songs are written, recorded and produced by Conic Rose in their own recording studio in the Wedding neighbourhood of Berlin.

Ein halbes Jahrhundert, oder in anderen Worten: 50 Jahre. So lang ist es bereits her, dass Udo Lindenberg das legendäre Panikorchester gründete. Am 13. August 1973 wurde dieser Zusammenschluss offiziell gemacht, seither war es wie ein unzertrennliches Bündnis, und auch wenn die Besetzung der Band stets einige Veränderungen mitmachte, sollte es doch als solches bis zuletzt bestehenbleiben. 1983, im selben Jahr, in dem auch Odyssee erschien, fand auch das legendäre Konzert im CCH (Congress Center Hamburg) statt, vor welchem die Besucher wohl nicht ahnen konnten, dass sie Teil eines weiteren ikonischen Releases werden sollten. Denn das am 19. März 1983 stattfindende Konzert wurde live aufgezeichnet und erschien im selben Jahr noch unter dem Namen Lindstärke 10 als offizielles Livealbum. Im Januar 1990 konnte Lindenberg mit dem neuen Panikorchester im Zuge der politischen Wende erstmals auch auf Tournee durch die ehemalige DDR gehen, wobei das Konzert in Leipzig ebenfalls aufgezeichnet und als das Livealbum Live in Leipzig ausproduziert und veröffentlicht wurde. Zeitsprung ins heutige Jahr 2023: Zum großen 50-jährigen Jubiläum des Panikorchesters erscheinen nun nicht nur diese beiden Livemitschnitte, sondern gemeinsam mit dem kaum weniger legendären Livealbum LIVE ’96, welches die bis heute anhaltende Reunion des originalen Panikorchesters dokumentiert und 1997 ebenfalls über Polydor erschien, und nun erstmals auf Vinyl verfügbar sein wird. Limitiert auf 2.000 Stück und nummeriert!
