Immersed in the encounters of Afro-Brazilian cultures and in the influences of yoga philosophy, Brazilian singer-songwriter Alvaro Lancellotti drew inspiration to create his new album: “Arruda, Alfazema e Guiné”. The songs merge the spiritual and musical realms as fundamental elements of its conception, yet remaining free from any fixed aesthetic. With a percussive strength connected to its sound, “Arruda, Alfazema e Guiné” was released by the American label Amor in Sound, led by Mario Caldato Jr. (Beastie Boys) and Samantha De Lucena-Caldato.

Alvaro Lancellotti is a multifaceted artist whose songs have been recorded by renowned artists such as Marcos Valle and Maria Rita. Among his collaborators are Rogê, Wado, Davi Moraes, his brother Domenico Lancellotti, and legendary artists spanning generations, such as Mateus Aleluia and his father, Ivor Lancellotti.

Oi Va Voi sind bekannt für prominente Kollaborationen wie mit KT Tunstall, Bridgette Amofah (Rudimental) oder der Violinistin Anna Phoebe. "The Water's Edge" wurde zum Teil von Mike Spencer (Rudimental, Tom Walker, Ellie Goulding) produziert und erscheint auf dem eigenen Label Parallel Skies. Es ignoriert Kategorisierungen zugunsten dauerhafter musikalischer und sozialer Werte und ist ein Ausdruck der Notwendigkeit, Spaltungen hinter sich zu lassen und eine gemeinsame Menschlichkeit zu finden.

Oi Va Voi fuse dance grooves, singer-songwriter sensitivity and a rock’n’roll sensibility with the group’s Jewish cultural heritage and a cosmopolitan rhythmic inspiration drawn from Eastern Europe, the Middle East and beyond. Despite the fractured times we are living in, a theme of optimism through pain is there throughout Oi Va Voi’s new album ‘The Waters Edge’.

We’re reminded of the title of the breakthrough first album, Laughter Through Tears. The Bacon & Quarmby-produced debut won a BBC World Music Award, was listed as a New York Times Top Ten Album Of The Year, and launched the career of a young KT Tunstall. The tradition of world-class musicianship continued with Bridgette Amofah (Rudimental) as the featured vocalist on Travelling the Face of The Globe, and noted violinist Anna Phoebe, who recorded and performed with the band for over a decade.

Every member evolves the Oi Va Voi sound; but through each change, the core themes and vision have remained constant. 2018’s album, Memory Drop, introduced the unique voice of Zohara Niddam, and it’s Zohara who returns here on The Water’s Edge, featuring on ‘Shine A Light’, ‘Lay Your Head’ and ‘Wave’. Also featuring across the new album is composer, violinist and singer Sarah Anderson, who co-wrote seven tracks on the album, with her emotionally poignant lyrics, evocative layered vocals and uplifting violin parts. Guitarist John Matts and Trumpeter David Orchant also return, with Orchant bringing deep colour and expression to the stirring waltz ‘Oceans’.

The album opener ‘Sad Dance’ was written after the devastating earthquake that struck Turkey and Syria in early 2023 impacting many of the band’s friends, fans and colleagues. Finding themselves in the studio the day after the tragedy, the band searched for ways to respond. Sarah’’s mournful, pulsating violins create an ever evolving soundscape on top of which her own vocal, and Steve’s earthy clarinet express sorrow and hope. Says Sarah - “It’s about human connection - a metaphorical hand held through trauma, and the preservation of ‘old worlds’ through relics, reminding us of where we came from”.

‘Shine a Light’ was also a chance to welcome back producer Mike Spencer (Rudimental, Tom Walker, Ellie Goulding), who produced their second album. Here his Pop experience can be felt in the hooky dance loop, which you can hear becoming one of Oi Va Voi’s trademark live encores. Along with the melodic pop sheen of ‘Lay Your Head’, this song shows the band in an uplifting mood, pointing at the years of high-energy tours which have become their signature. These tracks, and the poignant ‘Josephine’, offer a release - a more escapist mood and a sign of the hope underneath everything.

Oi Va Voi have never been easy to categorise, and they’ve made a point of ignoring genre in favour of more enduring musical and social values. The Water’s Edge is the first album to be released on the band’s own Parallel Skies label, which will sign artists from a diversity of cultures, nations and musics in the coming years. The album title refers to an old custom from the Jewish New Year of going down to the waterside - casting off the baggage of the past, and letting it wash away on the tide. As the first release on this label it’s an expression of the need to put divisions behind us, and find a shared humanity.

Im Mai 2020 veröffentlichten Car Seat Headrest (Sänger Will Toledo, Gitarrist Ethan Ives, Schlagzeuger Andrew Katz und Bassist Seth Dalby) ihr experimentelles, beatlastiges Album "Making a Door Less Open" - just in dem Moment, als die Welt zum Stillstand kam. Die darauffolgende Phase der erzwungenen Pause zog sich über Jahre. Als sie 2022 endlich wieder auf Tour gehen konnten, waren sie überrascht und erfreut, dass ihr Publikum jünger war als je zuvor. Dank des unerwarteten viralen Erfolgs von "It"s Only Sex" und "Sober to Death" hatte eine neue Generation ihre Coming-of-Age-Klassiker "Teens of Denial" und "Twin Fantasy" für sich entdeckt. "The Scholars" wurde von Toledo produziert und größtenteils analog aufgenommen. Für die Lyrics und die erzählerische Struktur ließ sich Toledo durch Klassiker inspirieren - von Shakespeare über Mozart bis hin zu Opernmusik. Musikalisch orientiert sich "The Scholars" behutsam an großen Rock-Opern und Konzeptalben wie "Tommy" von The Who oder "Ziggy Stardust" von David Bowie. Die erste Albumhälfte dreht sich um Studierende und ihre spirituellen und persönlichen Krisen, während die zweite Hälfte von einer epischen Auseinandersetzung zwischen Tradition und Aufbruch handelt. "Ein Problem vieler Rock-Opern ist, dass die einzelnen Songs der Story untergeordnet werden und dadurch weniger für sich stehen", sagt Toledo. "Ich wollte einen Mittelweg finden, bei dem jeder Song als eigenständiger Charakter funktioniert - als würde er auf die Bühne treten und seinen großen Moment haben." Auf Sound lag diesmal ein besonderer Fokus. Ethan Ives übernahm eine aktivere Rolle in der Soundgestaltung, was zu einer dichten, vielschichtigen Produktion führte. Neben Stücken wie dem 19-minütigen "Planet Desperation" enthält das Album auch eingängige Songs wie "The Catastrophe (Good Luck With That Man)", das an den Folk-Pop der 60er Jahre erinnert. Car Seat Headrest sehen in "The Scholars" eine neue Ära ihrer Bandgeschichte, die weit über die Anfänge des ehemaligen Soloprojekts hinausgewachsen ist. Das Album erscheint als CD und auf Vinyl als Doppel-LP mit 28-seitigem Booklet.

Orchid Mantis, by Michelle Helene Mackenzie and Stefan Maier, is a work that draws its inspiration from the history of the Sanzhi Pod City, in northern Taiwan. Sanzhi Pod City was built from 1978 onwards, made up of buildings constructed from assemblages of `pods' inspired by the futuro houses of Finnish architect Matti Suuronen. The project was abandoned in 1980, following a number of accidents during construction and persistent rumours that the site was haunted. However, this wasteland of a city has allowed insects to proliferate, in particular five species of orchid mantis. It is this strange environment, made up of utopian buildings, proliferating insects and vegetation reclaiming the site, that serves as the imaginary space for Michelle Helene Mackenzie and Stefan Maier's music, a music of carefully designed pace and progression, drawing, through resonance and stridulation, subtle sonic materials that guide and accompany us into multiple worlds with admirable ease and grace. Breach, by American composer Olivia Block, engages in a dialogue between field recordings and synthesised sounds, creating a vibrant plea for wild spaces that face an ever-growing threat to their survival from human activities. The work is based on recordings collected in the San Ignacio lagoon in the Mexican part of Southern California. This lagoon is known as a breeding ground for eastern Pacific grey whales. With the help of precise electronics, the music unfolds like a drift, depicting the subjective soundscape of whales caught up in the noise of the Anthropocene. The composer uses otoacoustic emissions in particular, representing the sound saturation caused by humans in the habitat of these large marine mammals. Going beyond a merely descriptive dimension, Olivia Block manages to transcend her subject to offer a fascinating musical form that engages the listener in a constantly renewed way.

Macht Euch bereit für die Magie von "LOVE", dem neuen Studioalbum der schwedischen Prog-Rock-Legende The Flower Kings, die auf eine über 30-jährige Karriere zurückblicken. Als The Flower Kings am 20. August 1993 ihr allererstes Konzert in Schweden gaben, ahnten sie wahrscheinlich noch nicht, dass sie im Begriff waren, Prog-Rock-Geschichte zu schreiben. Mit nunmehr 17 Studioalben, unzähligen Live-Aufnahmen, welt-weiten Tourneen und Festivalauftritten hat die Band ein Vermächtnis geschaffen, das nur von wenigen Bands übertroffen werden kann - und sich als Pioniere der Wiedergeburt des Prog-Rock erwiesen. Das Line-Up besteht aus den drei Originalmitgliedern Roine Stolt, Hasse Fröberg und Michael Stolt sowie den später hinzuge-kommenen Mitgliedern Mirko DeMaio und Lalle Larsson. Gemeinsam haben sie ein Album geschaffen, das den wahren Geist dessen einfängt, was Progressive Rock immer sein sollte: eine kreative Revolution, frei von den Zwängen kommerzieller Hitfor-meln. "LOVE" erinnert an die goldene Ära der späten 60er und frühen 70er Jahre und strotzt nur so vor Vintage-Vibes, epischen Kompositionen und einer reichen Mischung an Einflüssen - von Klassik und Jazz bis hin zu elektronischer Musik und Filmsound-tracks.Auf "LOVE" bieten The Flower Kings über 70 Minuten klangliche Erkundung in 12 Tracks, die von ausgedehnten 12-Minuten-Epen bis hin zu prägnanten 3-Minuten-Perlen reichen. Das Album verwebt Themen zu einem kohärenten Ganzen, das man am besten als eine zusammenhängende Reise erlebt: zugängliche Melodien gepaart mit experimentellen Momenten, wilden Gitar-rensoli und virtuoser Synthesizerarbeit, die an ihre frühen Werke erinnern. Die erste EP von Bleed, "Somebody's Closer", wurde von der Band im Jahr 2021 zunächst selbst über digitale Plattformen veröffentlicht. Obwohl die EP, die sich auf den Alt-Rock/Metal der späten 90er/frühen 00er Jahre beruft, nicht in physischer Form veröffentlicht wurde, erregte die in Dallas, Texas, ansässige Band mit ihrer hauchdünnen Verzerrung - die Spannung und Atmosphäre gleichermaßen erzeugt - großes Aufsehen und erregte über mehrere gegenseitige Verbindungen die Aufmerksamkeit von 20 Buck Spin. Das Label brachte 2022 Vinyl- und Kassetten-Editionen heraus und machte so die Musik von Bleed einem neuen Publikum und einer breiteren Öffentlichkeit bekannt. Seitdem hat sich die Vorfreude auf das Debütalbum der Band in die Höhe geschraubt - und jetzt, wo der Frühling in den Sommer übergeht, ist es endlich soweit.

Die selbstbetitelte LP von Bleed behält die melodische Schwere und die straffen Songstrukturen der EP bei, taucht aber gleichzeitig kopfüber in den ozeanischen Dunst ein und treibt ihren Sound in ein Gebiet, das eindringlicher, unerbittlicher und hypnotisch üppig ist. Die Gitarren wiegen sich in aufgestapelten Wellen von Gravitationsangst, darunter pulsieren exzentrisch übersteuerte Rhythmen, und die Stimme von Gitarrist und Sänger Ryan Hughes schwebt ein und aus, manchmal distanziert und losgelöst, manchmal aufgerissen vor Verzweiflung. Die Texte bewegen sich in Fragmenten und spielen auf Themen wie tiefe innere Kämpfe, Bewältigungsmechanismen und das Verletzen derer, die man am meisten liebt, an. Es ist Musik, die nicht so sehr Aufmerksamkeit verlangt, sondern direkt in den Blutkreislauf sickert, die Art von Album, die sich nachts um 3 Uhr in einer Endlosschleife im Hinterkopf festsetzt.

Gleich zu Beginn werden kühne Schritte unternommen, um die Authentizität von Bleeds Universum in Bezug auf seine Inspirationen und Ambitionen auszuweiten. Die Art und Weise, wie Bleed diese Songs sich entfalten lassen, hat etwas Selbstbewusstes, sie wirken sofort und haben es nicht nötig, länger als nötig zu verweilen. Das Ergebnis ist ein Album, das sich massiv und doch intim anfühlt, brutal und doch schön, vertraut und doch einzigartig. Es hinterlässt nicht nur einen Eindruck, sondern hallt noch lange nach, wenn die letzten Töne verklungen sind.

Alexandre Tharaud mit drei Uraufführungen
Das neue Album des vielseitigen französischen Star-Pianisten Alexandre Tharaud enthält drei Klavierkonzerte, allesamt Uraufführungen, die für ihn geschrieben und ihm gewidmet wurden. O-Töne der Komponisten zu ihren Werken:

Alex Nante: „Das Spiel von Alexandre Tharaud war für mich während der gesamten Komposition des Stücks eine Inspiration. Von der ersten Toccata im Barockstil über die geschmeidige, kristalline Atmosphäre von Anunciación bis hin zu den energischen und kraftvollen Klängen von Toccata II war es meine Absicht, in diesem Werk besondere interpretatorische Facetten zu erforschen, über die er verfügt."
Thierry Pécou: “Cara Bali“ könnte man mit ‚Bali-Stil‘ übersetzen. Mir ging es nicht darum, das Unnachahmliche zu imitieren, sondern im Kopf Assoziationen zu wecken (...) - eine Art imaginärer Umweg oder Szenenwechsel bei einem Projekt, das mich glücklicherweise wieder mit meinem treuen Komplizen Alexandre Tharaud zusammengebracht hat...“

Helsinki tenor saxophonist Jussi Kannaste's debut album as a band leader has been a long time coming. A top musician in the local scene revered by his contemporaries and sought after as a band member, Kannaste now presents his new work Out Of Self and Into Others on We Jazz Records. His quartet, Kannaste4, brings together Finnish musicians Tomi Nikku (of Bowman Trio) and Joonas Riippa, plus Berlin-based Swedish bassist Petter Eldh (of Koma Saxo / Post Koma and Y-OTIS), and features an all original program penned by Kannaste. His music is highly personal contemporary jazz leaning into modes of avantgarde expression. At times quiet as a whisper, at times fiery and swinging, Out Of Self and Into Others is a product of a deep marinade, a debut album that feels like much more than "just" that.

Jussi Kannaste (born 1976) is a saxophonist and educator based in Helsinki. Prior to launching Kannaste4, he has been a key part of the scene for 20+ years, performing in highly acclaimed bands such as Antti Lötjönen Quintet East, 3TM, Jaska Lukkarinen Trio, Ricky-Tick Big Band, and many more. As the head of the department of Jazz at Sibelius Academy, Kannaste is also a key figure in internationally admired Finnish jazz education system.

Die Kölner Band Schmitz & Niebuhr hat ein bahnbrechendes Progrock-Konzeptalbum mit dem Titel "Porz 1975" aufgenommen. Porz? Heute größter Stadtbezirk der Millionenstadt Köln, bis 1975 eigenständige Stadt, in der die MusikerInnen aufwuchsen und teils wieder leben. Dogma: Nur Instrumente - elektronisch, elektrisch und akustisch - die 1975 bereits existierten, wurden eingesetzt. Ein Stück für jeden der 16 damaligen Porzer Stadtteile . OK, mit Intro und Outro (Spielmannszug!) sind es 18. Deshalb benötigte man zwei LPs und reaktivierte die wunderbare C-90 Musikkassette. Gitarrensoli sind erlaubt, allerdings ohne . Sie wissen schon. PORZ 1975 ist ein akustisches Roadmovie durch die 70er Jahre. Ein Jahrzehnt geprägt von Ideenreichtum, kompositorischem Wagemut und dem Vertrauen, dass Hörerinnen und Hörer sich Zeit für Musik nehmen. Ebenso skizziert das Konzeptalbum die Traumata der kommunalen Gebietsreform - die damit einhergehenden Verwerfungen und Wendungen werden auf musikalischer Ebene gespiegelt, das 16-seitige Booklet gewährt hierzu einen Einblick. Das Doppelalbum - voll mit Referenzen an den Art Pop und Progressive Rock - funktioniert aber auch allein. Üppig Instrumentiert, ausufernde Improvisationen sind aber eher spärlich gesät, die Songs sind geistreich durchkomponiert und -arrangiert.

Die CREMATORY Hitfabrik öffnet mit ihrem neuen Studioalbum "Destination" zum 17. Mal ihre Pforten und erreicht ein neues, noch höheres Level als bisher! Es ist ein Album, das sprichwörtlich alle Stärken und Phasen der Gothic Metal Pioniere vereint, sprich es geht stellenweise zurück zu ihren Melodic Death Metal Wurzeln, dann taucht man wieder tief in die Gothic Gefi lde ein und überrascht mit einigen Elektro-Tanzfl ächen-Knallern. "Destination" ist wie ein musikalisches Best-Of Werk, eine Rückbesinnung kombiniert mit den Stärken der Gegenwart. Eines ist jedenfalls klar: CREMATORY sind hochmotiviert, ziehen den Härtegrad an und haben defi nitiv selbst nach 34 Jahren erfolgreicher Bandgeschichte noch so einiges zu sagen!

The Crippled Flower was a post-punk band from Düsseldorf - and they arrived late. However, unlike many young, unsuspecting, hairsprayed hopefuls from that time, in 1985 they could sense that the end of their era was approaching. They knew too much to want to take the world by storm. They were four individualists searching their own way. Each of the band members only found their calling after the time that they had spent together – but that's exactly what makes The Crippled Flower still seem really interesting today, this static energy that does not discharge, but is simply there.

Searching dreamers should sound like that and that's what they were. Singer Phil Elston, for example, had brought his love of Kraftwerk from England to Düsseldorf. Even his bandmates found this strange, but they were also entangled in their own longings. This is because the times were still so crazy and these searchers were "on fire". A fire that glows in the band's recordings.

Listening to the songs today, The Crippled Flower sound like they are hugely at the height of their game; think of Wire, Felt, Scritti Politti or Minimal Compact. The variety of musical themes, as well as different soundscapes, which the band created can only be listened to in amazement. Often, it is only Phil Elston's Sprechgesang that confirms that this is really the same band. However, it was back in 1985 when, importantly, the catalyst that brought the musicians together - the short lived eclectic record store "Heartbeat" in Düsseldorf Bilk - occured. It was there where post-industrial and pop, melodic minimal music and sound attacks awaited those who wanted to discover music by artists and bands they did not yet know.

Cassette releases. All recorded on 4-Track. The Crippled Flower succeeded in this medium. Firstly, with a cassette just entited The Crippled Flower, working from project-like studio recorded sketches. Four more tracks from the short-lived band appeared in 1986 on "A Heartbeat Rendezvous“. A demo tape submitted to Les Disques du Crépuscule, however, did not lead to a worldwide career and so, unfortunately, it was soon over.

Stefan Krausen moved on to the follow-up project Deux Baleines Blanches with Stefan Schneider, which, in 1994, gave rise to the band Kreidler. Krausen was already drumming with the I-Burnettes on AtaTak and much later he studied painting in Munich. Nina Ahlers moved from Düsseldorf to Paris to study art, because in the 80s it was still the case that Paris was the destination of choice for those really wanting to become an artist – and that's what she did. Her work is characterized by a non-academic minimalism focusing on everyday objects. Stefan Schneider remained connected to music. Only Phil Elston, who helped sabotage fox hunts in England and wrote these observant lyrics about environmental destruction and time travel, seems to have escaped the social-media world. Whether he found Kraftwerk-fulfilment in Düsseldorf or moved on disillusioned remains a mystery to us. Channelling the grimy trip of Monster Magnet's pine Of God' through a prism of kraut-derived repetition and Part Chimp style bloodymindedness, the resulting hallucinatory vortex appears constantly on the realm of breaking point.Amps and brains alike, as these psychic omnivores bring seven times the joy, seven times the pain, seven times the dementia and deliverance.

The first solo album from Keith Streng, the legendary guitarist of The Fleshtones, the greatest garage rock band in the world! Featuring 12 tracks that span from psychedelic rock to '70s rock, with a strong garage rock essence. For this special occasion, Keith has invited some prestigious artists to collaborate on the album. Two tracks feature The Limiñanas, with whom he will be sharing the stage as a guest guitarist on all their 2025 tour dates. Several tracks include Peter Buck and Scott McCaughey of R.E.M.. The French scene is also well represented, with the young prodigies Dynamite Shakers on one track and Tony Truant on another. And, of course, longtime collaborators Michael Giblin and Kurt Bloch from his side project The Split Squad. Adding a touch of magic, the Red Chuck Tabernacle Choir brings light to the stunning ballad "More Than Beautiful". Kurt Bloch (Fastbacks / Young Fresh Fellows / Presidents of the USA) also mastered the album. The "most hard-working man" Keith Streng will be on stage in France this June for several dates with his fabulous Fleshtones.
