Als Matthew E. White an dem Nachfolger seines zweiten Studioalbums arbeitete, wollte er seine Herangehensweise an das Songwriting neu erfinden, zumindest für eine Session. White versammelte eine vertrauenswürdige Truppe von sieben Musikern in Richmond, Virginia. Er dirigierte das Septett durch eine Reihe von lockeren, größtenteils gestischen Kompositionen. Die Klänge waren gewaltig, eine Reihe von Keyboards und Gitarren untermalten den Schwung einer ineinandergreifenden vierköpfigen Rhythmusgruppe. Wenn ihm etwas gefiel, zog er ein Notizbuch zu Rate, das voller lyrischer Einfälle war, und sang dann komplette erste Takes zu Musik, die er noch nie gehört hatte. Abzüglich bescheidener Bearbeitungen und leichter Overdubs wurde Broken Mirror: A Selfie Reflection an Ort und Stelle fertiggestellt, ein Blitz, der einen Platz zum Einschlagen suchte. Holley und White mögen als unwahrscheinliche Kollaborateure erscheinen, da sie durch Jahrzehnte und Disziplinen getrennt sind, aber die beiden teilen tiefe Alabama-Wurzeln. Und was noch wichtiger ist: Holley und White betrachten Musik als ein unheimliches Gefäß für sonst undurchdringliche Vorstellungen von Trauer, Leid und Solidarität. JPEG is the 4th album from German legends Digitalism, released on their own label “Magnetism". The Hamburg-based electronic music duo formed in Hamburg in 2004, consisting of Jens “Jence” Moelle and ?smail “Isi” Tüfekçi. Digitalism has released records on labels such as Gerd Jansons Running Back Records, Kitsune, Virgin, Dynamic Records, Boys Noize Records, Astralwerks and PIAS and has throughout the years played all over the world at famous venues, clubs and festivals. They are also highly regarded for their remixes for acts such as Daft Punk ,Depeche Mode, Superorganism, Mø and many more. Digitalism have became synonymous with unique electronic productions, a crossover sound with roots in both indie, techno and pop. Digitalisms music also appears in countless video games and syncs (Recent campaigns Nissan Leaf, past campaigns Vodafone, Fifa, Gran Turismo and many more).

Songs zu schreiben ist für Toby Whyle eine Selbstverständlichkeit, im Musikkosmos ist er seit langer Zeit ein bekanntes Gesicht. Neu ist die Erkenntnis, dass Songwriting für ihn einer der wenigen Wege ist, die grelle, schnelllebige Außenwelt auszublenden. "A Mood Of Its Own" ist der Anfang eines neuen Abenteuers, auf das sich Toby erstmals alleine begibt. Vorbehaltlos setzt er sich den Anziehungskräften von elektronischer Musik und Gitarrenpop aus, umkreist beide immer wieder knapp, lässt sich aber nie ganz fangen. Jeder Song folgt dabei einer eigenen Umlaufbahn, gewährt neue Einblicke in Tobys Gedankenwelten.

Der Titel "A Mood Of Its Own" entstammt einer Textzeile der ersten Single "No One Moves", mit der Toby gleich mal auf dem ersten Platz der Radio FM4 Charts landete. Der Song beschreibt eine Schreibblockade, die zweite Single "Quiet The Silence" begleitet das Auseinanderdriften zweier Menschen, "Pity" erzählt von Stolpersteinen und einem Neubeginn und "How It Feels" von der Suche nach Konstanten in einer schnelllebigen Welt. Auf seiner ersten Solo-EP zeigt Toby Whyle die volle Bandbreite seines Songwritings, lässt einen oft energiegeladen aber nachdenklich zurück. Gemeinsam mit Produzent Maximilian Walch hat Toby unterschiedliche Stimmungen eingefangen, auf das Wesentliche reduziert und eine verbindende Ästhetik geschaffen.

Never underestimate the power of a woman with her back to the wall. In March 2020, as Covid blew across the planet, the shutters came down on live venues and recording studios, and the music scene fell suddenly silent, Ghalia Volt faced the same dilemma as every other artist.
What now? The answer was One Woman Band. Having joined with the cream of the US roots scene for two acclaimed albums, 2017’s Let The Demons Out and 2019’s Mississppi Blend, Volt’s rebirth as a solo performer wasn’t a decision made lightly. But if an apprenticeship busking in her native Brussels taught Volt anything, it’s that she already had everything she needed to make magic.
“In March, I started playing on a real drum set,” she recalls.
“Playing a kick, snare and hi-hat plus a tambourine with my two feet, while playing slide/guitar and singing at the same time.” After road-testing the new format at shows across Mississippi, Volt realised that one was the magic number.
In August, she committed to the project, embarking on a month-long Amtrak train trip that became an intensive writing session, the shifting landscapes beyond the window inspiring her pen to scratch as never before. Tracked live in November at Memphis’s legendary Royal Sound Studios, One
Woman Band is Volt’s most lyrically honest and groove-driven material to date.
You can feel the turn of those train wheels in the addictive stomp of songs like
Reap What You Sow, while the rattle-and-shiver slide guitar of Espiritu Papago
evokes the scream of a locomotive whistle.
“Imagine John Lee Hooker on mushrooms, lost in the desert of Arizona, on a hot
summer day,” says Volt. “That’s the vibe of that song.” The Covid-19 pandemic
is an unprecedented chapter of human history, with no clear end in sight.
But Ghalia Volt has given us the soundtrack to better times ahead, and the
songs we’ll still be singing when we meet on the other side. This might be a

Cut withFrench and African players including guitarist Pierre Chaze, pianist Michel Graillier and percussionist Didier Leon , this is music with few precedents or followers, spanning from extraterrestrial dissonance to earthbound, streetlegal funk. Gruff Rhys releases his new album ‘Seeking New
Gods’ through Rough Trade. This is Gruff’s
seventh solo album.
‘Seeking New Gods’ was recorded following a US
tour with his band and mixed in LA with superstar
producer Mario C (Beastie Boys).
The album concept was originally driven to be the
biography of a mountain, Mount Paektu (an East
Asian active volcano). However, as Gruff’s writing
began to reflect on the inhuman timescale of a
peak’s existence and the intimate features that
bring it to mythological life, both the songs and the
mountain became more and more personal.
“The album is about people and the civilisations,
and the spaces people inhabit over periods of
time. How people come and go but the geology
sticks around and changes more slowly. I think it’s
about memory and time,” he suggests of ‘Seeking
New Gods’ meaning. “It’s still a biography of a
mountain, but now it’s a Mount Paektu of the mind.
You won’t learn much about the real mountain
from listening to this record but you will feel

Having learned to play traditional music from Auvergne by listening to field recordings, Gourdon re-orientates tradition via minimalism, honing in on a place or location's unique vibratory fields, volumes and surfaces.

Die Londoner Produzentin, DJ und Labelchefin Elkka (mit bürgerlichem Namen Emma Kirby) kündigt eine neue EP mit dem Titel „Euphoric Melodies“ an, die am 21. Mai 2021 erscheint und ihre erste Veröffentlichung auf dem Ninja Tune-Sublabel Technicolour ist. Der 5-Tracker ist eine warme und euphorische Erkundung dessen, was Emma selbst am meisten schätzt - die Fähigkeit und Freiheit, an sich selbst zu glauben. „Euphoric Melodies“ ist der Nachfolger von „I Miss Raving“, das letztes Jahr auf Local Action veröffentlicht wurde. Der Track ist Emmas Ode an den Club als solchen und seine Abwesenheit im Jahr 2020 - und wurde von FACT, DJ Mag, Earmilk und Resident Advisor gelobt, die den Track als „aufbrausend und reich an Gefühl“ beschrieben und dem Track attestierten: „das ist Pop-fokussierter House vom Feinsten.“.
Mit der Entscheidung, die volle künstlerische Kontrolle über ihre Musik zu übernehmen, vollzog Emma 2016 den Wandel von Singer/ Songwriterin zur Produzentin und Künstlerin. Im selben Jahr gründete sie auch femme culture, einem Plattenlabel und Kollektiv, das aus dem Wunsch heraus entstand, Frauen und nicht-binäre DJs in der Kunst zu fördern und zukunftsweisende Musik voranzutreiben, die für Inklusivität zwischen allen Geschlechtern, Hintergründen und Überzeugungen steht.

A symbol for quality techno music going back 15 years, Jay Lumen makes his solo EP debut on Drumcode.

A dance music journeyman with over 70 releases and a quality imprint Footwork Audio to his name, Jay Lumen’s solo debut EP on Adam Beyer’s label is richly deserved. The artist has been in standout form recently, most notably contributing ‘Galactic Rainbow’ to A-Sides Vol.10, one of the highlights of the compilation. We got our first taste of Lumen on Drumcode way back in 2012 when he teamed with Gary Beck for the rhythmic gem ‘Lotus’. Nine years on, his next EP offering doesn’t disappoint.

‘Returning’ is marked by crushing drumlines and shuffling beats, before gradually building into an emotional chord driven cut that looks hopefully towards the future. ‘Mind’ contrasts this perfectly, a loopy monster that rolls for days, evoking a distinct old skool spirit.

Speaking about the title track, Lumen explains: “I wrote ‘Returning’ when I was in a period of really missing techno and the party community. The physical contact with people at events, as well as on the streets and at venues before the shows. Hugs and interactions. I can already imagine playing this at the first open air after lockdown as the sun sets. This track is about the reunion and happiness we’re all going to share.”

'Verzamelen II' is the second volume in a retrospective series in which we look back at the work of Wouter van Veldhoven (Netherlands). Throughout the past decade, the Dutch composer built an impressive catalogue of music in which tape loop and modular synthesis experiments hold a central place. Both collaborations and solo-work saw the light through some distinctive labels such as Slaapwel, The Tapeworm, Umor Rex and Digitalis among others.

With this series we want to dive into some work which slightly went under the radar. The pieces are collected from several releases and are re-mastered for the occasion. Some of them were never physically released before.

Peter Broderick and Hainbach kindly joined this trip by offering two new reworks which close this second volume.

Impulse treated all its musicians as innovators, revolutionaries even—from swing and bebop, to free and Afrofuturist. The performances on Impulse Records: Music, Message and the Moment draw their staying power from a wide embrace of styles and sounds, as well as a tight focus on a historic moment when the promise of change was in the air and the message of racial harmony was in the music. Today that music has lost none of its relevance: the promise still deferred, the message still on time.
