How do you follow up a work described in the Independent on Sunday as “the best debut album since Marquee Moon”? That’s the question facing singer-songwriter John Canning Yates, twenty years on from the critically acclaimed ‘The First Album’ by his band Ella Guru.
‘The Quiet Portraits’ will appeal to anyone who loves the beautiful melodic soundscapes woven by Brian Wilson, Burt Bacharach, and Tom Waits, while Yates’s unique vocals evoke the emotional fragility and compelling narrative of Neil Young, Paul Buchanan, Mark Linkous and Elliott Smith.
Mastered by Jason Mitchell (PJ Harvey, Robert Forster), and featuring guest contributions from pedal steel maestro BJ Cole and friend and multi-instrumentalist Andy Frizell (Kevin Ayers, Wizards of Twiddly), those dedicated followers of Ella Guru who stayed the path will find their patience very well rewarded. ‘The Quiet Portraits’ is a remarkable achievement from an unassuming, yet hugely talented artist.

It’s a welcome relief amid the rapidly changing musical landscape to find that all that has changed in John’s world is the number of musicians around him. The beautiful storytelling, the art of finding those magical musical moments that will remain with you for years to come: all of that has survived the passing of time intact.
Happiest with headphones on, working alone in the small hours from his Liverpool home, Yates has created another masterpiece.
He explains: “In the wee small hours, with loved ones safely asleep and the busy day done, there comes a hush. Within it, you can breathe and listen. Listen for the infinite possibilities. From those possibilities emerged these portraits. I have sought to find those precious moments: of love and peace in turbulent times, of truth and hope for calmer days ahead. I hope you find them too.”
Entitled ‘The Quiet Portraits,’ the new solo album from John Canning Yates tells tales of people and places, of time, family, history, belonging, forgetting and remembering.

Originally released in 1986 ‘Power’ was the work of Philly producer Derrick Graves and vocalist Terrance T. The machine lead production on ‘Power’ was part of an emerging wave of post disco producers embracing a dub aesthetic that proved to be the precursor to the emergence of house music. The vocal harmonies from Terrance were influenced by Cameo and Prince and combined with the powerful production results in a dancefloor bomb in the Larry Levan style, stripped back and dubby with a strong song at its core. This level of musicality and production was no fluke, Derrick was a seasoned session musician who worked extensively with the likes of Sister Sledge, Dexter Wansel & Donny Hathaway. Derrick had a clear understanding of emerging studio trends “Music production was evolving into a new phase where home studios were developing and it was becoming more possible for real recordings to be made! From there, I eventually enhanced my production skills by learning how to compose using sequencers, computer software (DAWs), and midi instrument implementation in the 80's and 90's. I went from a 4-track to eventually a 24-Track 2" tape machine setup!”.

Dieser Ausflug ins Tabu ist keine Überraschung, denn zur Band gehört auch der IMPERIAL TRIUMPHANT-Gitarrist Zachary Ezrin, und das Album bietet ein wirklich verstörendes Covermotiv des bekannten Künstlers Eliran Kantor (Immolation, Heaven Shall Burn). Unbehagliches Zuhören hat sich noch nie so gut angefühlt.

LAKE's neues Album "Let's Build A Roof" KLP213 wurde von Nordwest Legende KARL BLAU produziert und ist süß, funky und nostalgisch - ein Inbegriff psychedelischen Pops. "Let's Build A Roof" ist wie ein Reisebericht über die Plätze an denen die Band war, die Geschichten die sich da ergaben und die schönen und unschönen Erinnerungen, die aus ihnen hervorgingen. Eli Moore und Ashley Eriksson's strahlende Songwriting Chemie bildet die Grundlage für "Let's Build A Roof". Ihre Retro-Klimper Pop Ästhetik wird durch eine breite Instrumentierung (Synthesizer, Keyboards, Gitarren, Flöten und ausgewählte Percussion Instrumente) und wechselnde Tempi, die eine fragmentierende, kaleidoskopische Wirkung haben, ausgearbeitet. Stately piano and anguished voice reverberate in a vaulted hall, before gradually building into a widescreen anthem of synths, drums, and soaring vocals decrying the steady deadening of life and love: "It's deadly quiet in your old heart / Are you there? / I see dark skies on the rise / And daylight shows no remorse / And I realize it is my life / But It's losing all meaning." Swedish dark music icons Anna von Hausswolff and Henric de la Cour join the chorus as the song cascades towards an ominous horizon. The B Side, "Glassy Eyes," showcases Kite's mastery of somber, sweeping balladry. Hushed church organ elevates and anchors Stenemo's devastated confessional, swaying between resilience and defeat. The band describes the song as a reckoning with "the privileged and existential anxiety of drifting through life dispassionately," contrasted with "the yearning to connect profoundly with others and a desire for experiences that stir the soul before facing one's final moments." Like a hymn, the emotion thickens as it deepens, approaching both darkness and divinity: "Deep as I go, nothing to find / Oh catatonia, I won't cry / Nothing can grow, everything dies / Behind my glassy eyes."

Nach der Veröffentlichung ihres kathartischen, dunklen Psych-Blues-Epos Outside The Dream setzte die Pandemie die Band außer Gefecht. Die Band blieb am Leben, indem sie weiter schrieb und komponierte. Der Weg war genauso wichtig wie das Ziel, und so wurden es zwei Alben in einem: die Songs, die getrennt voneinander geschrieben wurden, sind in Chrononaut Cocktailbar zusammengefasst. Nachdem sie wieder zusammen kamen, bündelten sie ihre ganze Live-Power in einem massiven Biest von einem Song namens Flight Of The Sloths. Die zwei Seiten des Albums zeigen perfekt die zwei Seiten, die in der Band stecken: der eine Wolf schreibt gerne Songs mit solider Struktur und Melodie, während der andere Wolf gerne völlig durchdreht, wenn es um progressive Kreativität geht. Das war schon immer so, aber noch nie war der Kontrast so krass, das Dunkle und das Helle, die Sanftheit und die Aggressivität. Psychedelische Klänge, die an die Zeiten von The Doors und Pink Floyd erinnern, ringen mit düsterem Post-Punk in den Gassen von The Gun Club und Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds um Aufmerksamkeit. Mal tanzbar, mal introvertiert, immer spannend und ein wenig schräg. Schließen Sie die Augen und lassen Sie sich ins No Man's Valley führen...

Für das aktuelle Album lassen die Sidewalk Surfers den rissigen Asphalt des Hometown-Skateparks endgültig hinter sich und präsentieren stattdessen einen doomigen Soundtrack zu Road Movie und Klassenkampf. Mit zwölf Songs, die den düsteren Zeitgeist einfangen und dennoch den letzten Schluck aus der Calippo Cola zelebrieren, kann man getrost auf Tour gehen. So sicher waren sich Kinzi, Dom, Pecko und Kiwi in ihrem Schaffen noch nie. Dafür pennt man auch gern mal zu fünft im 90cm-Bett. Spätestens der Pizzaautomat macht alles wieder gut.

Since they shook up the scene with their 'Space Mambo' ten years ago The Limboos haven't stopped touring and reinventing themselves. For The Bacon Brothers, music is all about exploration. The siblings have spent the better part of three decades creating their own mix of folk, rock, soul, and country music. They call that diverse sound "forosoco," and it's taken them around the world, from headlining gigs in Japan to American performances at iconic venues like Carnegie Hall, the Grand Ole Opry and Gruene Hall.

The exploration continues with the band's twelfth release,'The Ballad Of The Brothers'. It's a record that highlights not only the similarities between Kevin Bacon (known worldwide as an A-list Hollywood actor) and Michael Bacon (celebrated as an Emmy-winning composer), but the differences, too. The two siblings may be bound together by blood and a mutual love of American roots music, but they've grown into sharp songwriters and cinematic storytellers with their own distinct approaches.

Old Pride is the debut full-length from Baltimore MD’s Pianos Become the Teeth. Drummer Kendrick Scott and bassist Alexander Claffy join rising-star Danish pianist RasmusSorensen for the release of a special trio project - BalancingAct- recorded in true jazz spirit in the heart of New York City. Timeless repertoire and intricate originals combine in a piano trio session which captures thetradition of years gone by: three players meeting in a studio to produce music which somehow sounds as if they spent a lifetime together. Sorensenrelocated to New York City in 2018 to pursue his studies at the Manhattan School ofMusic on a full-tuition scholarship and within five years had proved himself as a compellingcreative force, playing alongside some of the scene"s most reputable musicians and performing his original compositions in some of the world"s mostrevered jazz clubs. In line with New York"s fast paced spirit, the session with Claffy and Scott was set up, planned and recorded within a matter of days, with the musicians meeting on the day and spending just three hours together in the studio. It"s something of a rite of passage for pianists to showcase their treatment of classic jazz repertoire;Sorensen choses a selection of Great American Songbook classics and a lesser-knownColtrane number for this, his sophomore album. Alongside a handful of originals, the recording with two veteransof New York"s prestigious scene is a masterclass in energetic, spontaneous, playful and exciting piano trio playing. Effortless groove, rich contemporaryharmony, virtuosic improvisations, dextrous rhythmiccomplexity and intricate arrangements make for an adventurous and thrilling listen; the first meeting of three fearless and experienced masters of their craft. Jazz is no stranger to the concept of passing the baton from one generation to the next, not through loud exclamations and accolades, but by who the greats choose to work with. At the heart of this music are polyrhythmic grooves that might come from jazz, New Orleans black Indian music, trap, Malian rhythm Kassa Soro and the interplay between an SPD drum machine and live drumming. Largely featuring Scott's trumpet, the record introduces his articulate and frequently eloquent voice as the narrator of Ruler Rebel, much like the Persian Princess Scheherazade narrating her tales of the mysterious east to Sultan Shahriar over one thousand and one nights. A key track is `Encryption', a summation of Scott's direction of travel on the album. Here the running rhythm is derived from the New Orleansian Afro-Indian culture married with Malian Kassa Soro. This is in turn is layered with SPD-SX electronic drum machine and sampling machine played by Joe Dyson and Cory Fonsville that introduce rhythmic elements from trap and hip hop. Sounds complex?
