First Word Records are proud to bring you the debut EP from papaya noon - ‘through the moods’.

papaya noon are a Cardiff-based duo comprised of vocalist Annie Mirza and multi-instrumentalist Greg Marriott.

Formed five years ago, they make jazz-infused R&B music that incorporates their mutual love of classic soul, hip hop & electronica.

The duo have already amassed an impressive fan-base online, garnering over 80,000 followers across their socials, and receiving praise from such luminaries in the US as Missy Elliot, Snoop Dogg, Queen Latifah, 9th Wonder, Bootie Brown & the late great Fatman Scoop.

This is a result of their unique style, captivating grooves & deeply catchy hooks, encompassing a distinctive blend of soul music, from retrospective 90s vibes to alternative futuristic flavours, creating a sonic palette that’s wonderfully contemporary, yet very much their own.

All their music is written, performed & produced single-handedly by the duo themselves, who’ve managed to create a magically powerful potion from their plant-filled Cardiff studio space, and generated huge anticipation for their future output in-turn.

The future is NOW, as papaya noon are finally ready to unleash their music into the world.

‘through the moods’ is a 6-track EP of delicious alternative r&b vibes, already set to become future soul classics.

Sonically rooted in warm, textured instrumentation & layered harmonies, the duo have triumphantly built a huge soundscape that feels simultaneously nostalgic & futuristic. Smoky late-night ballads nestle alongside infectious uptempo jams, leaning into their jazzy boom-bap & neo-soul influences, whilst showcasing their phenomenal spread of talents as performers and songwriters both.

The duo explained that the EP navigates “neurodivergence, trauma & loss, with tenderness & honesty. Rather than presenting trauma as a spectacle, we’ve attempted to approach it with the softness and complexity that it merits”.


From the first single release ‘blush’, to the downtempo sweetness of ‘blindside’ or ‘morning light’, to the pacier ‘on your side’ & EP closer ‘crybaby’, each track on this project exemplifies their unbridled ability to produce deeply infectious earworms, whilst thematically encompassing unflinching lyricism that’s deeply personal.

Already hailed by some as “the Welsh Moonchild”, papaya noon were named as one of Clash Magazine’s “must-see” acts at FOCUS Wales in 2025, bringing their music to life on stage with their 5-piece live band, additionally performing at Brick Lane Jazz Festival, The Great Escape, Inglefest, Nowadaze, Swn Festival & Good Vibrations Society, as well as NXNe and BreakOut West in Canada, and supporting the likes of Hot 8 Brass Band & Reel People.

Frisch gekrönt mit ihrem ersten GRAMMY Award in der Kategorie ,Bestes R&B-Album" für ihren Beitrag zu Leon Thomas' MUTT kehrt die unverwechselbare Sängerin/Altistin mit "Yearnalism" zurück, ihrem dritten Studioalbum, das von Selbstbewusstsein, Fürsorge und befreiender Liebe durchdrungen ist. Die Singer-Songwriterin und Produzentin definiert ,Yearnalism" als den Prozess und die Dokumentation von Sehnsucht in ihren vielen Formen: ,Sehnsucht nach Freiheit, Sehnsucht nach Liebe, Sehnsucht nach dem, was man nicht haben kann, Sehnsucht nach Erweiterung." Diese kompakte LP mit 12 Songs, die bald zu Klassikern werden, zeichnet eine holprige Roadmap der Sehnsucht, frei von Ego. Baby Rose hat fast ein Jahrzehnt lang auf diesen Moment hingearbeitet. Aufgewachsen zwischen Washington D.C. und Fayetteville, N.C., geprägt von Künstlern wie Nina Simone, Donny Hathaway und Janis Joplin, ist die als Jasmine Rose Wilson geborene Musikerin seit ihrem Debüt ,To Myself" aus dem Jahr 2019 eine feste Größe im Alternative R&B. Seitdem hat sie sich auf Alben mit Ari Lennox, Big K.R.I.T., Q, BADBADNOTGOOD und J. Cole behauptet. Sie lieferte den Abspann-Song zum Hollywood-Blockbuster ,Creed III" und brachte ihr Talent sowohl vor als auch hinter der Kamera in A24s ,Materialists" ein, indem sie dem Soundtrack des Films zwei Songs von eindringlicher Textur schenkte und in einem Cameo-Auftritt als Hochzeitssängerin auftrat. Zu ihren Bewunderern in der Branche zählen Schwergewichte wie SZA, Alicia Keys, Kendrick Lamar, J. Cole, H.E.R., Kehlani, James Blake und Olivia Dean.

Die Musik von Panda Bear und Sonic Boom war schon immer ein Spielplatz: ein Ort, an dem Klangexperimente, Loops und unerwartete Ideen aufeinandertreffen. Während Sonic Boom einst mit Spacemen 3 die Balance zwischen Drone und Pop neu dachte und später mit modularen Synths experimentierte, erschafft Panda Bear, solo oder mit Animal Collective, schillernde Klangwelten zwischen Noise, Folk und Elektronik. Ihr gemeinsames Debüt Reset (2022) wirkte wie ein kreativer Befreiungsschlag im Pandemie-Nebel.

Mit A ? of WHEN setzen sie diese Spielfreude fort, gehen aber noch weiter. Harfen-Loops, Steel Drums, Pedal Steel, sogar Jodeln: Das Duo greift bewusst auf vermeintlich „uncooles“ Material zurück und macht daraus etwas Eigenes. Songs wie „Something Like Dreaming“ oder „Like a Moth to a Flame“ verbinden verspielte Psychedelik mit eingängigen Melodien, als würde man von Station zu Station durch einen musikalischen Abenteuerspielplatz springen.

Gleichzeitig wird der Ton ernster. Die zehn Stücke verhandeln digitale Erschöpfung, politische Verwerfungen und ökologische Fragen, ohne dabei die Leichtigkeit zu verlieren. Inspiriert von einer Welt aus „AI slop“, algorithmischem Dauerrauschen und permanenter Vernetzung, suchen Panda Bear und Sonic Boom bewusst nach anderen Formen der Verbindung: weniger Scrollen, mehr echtes Erleben, mehr Radio, Live-Shows, Listening-Partys und reale Begegnungen. Statt Zynismus setzen sie auf Empathie, Glück und gegenseitige Unterstützung.

Im Kern bleibt das Album jedoch ein Akt der Aneignung: Klänge aus unterschiedlichen Kontexten werden neu zusammengesetzt, getragen von ungewöhnlicher Percussion wie Harfe und Steel Drums. So entsteht Musik, die zugleich verspielt und reflektiert ist. A ? of WHEN blickt auf eine widersprüchliche Welt und verwandelt sie in etwas Verbindendes. Kein großes Heilsversprechen, sondern die Einladung, gemeinsam offline darin aufzugehen.

Konsequenterweise wird das Album nicht auf Streaming-Plattformen verfügbar sein: Panda Bear und Sonic Boom setzen stattdessen auf reale Begegnungen, Listening Sessions und direkten Austausch jenseits algorithmischer Dauerbeschallung.

Kassel Jaeger (alias François J. Bonnet) kehrt nach ,Swamps / Things" (SP119), ,Shifted in Dreams" (SP144) und der jüngsten Neuauflage des Klassikers ,Zauberberg" (SP068) - einem gemeinsam mit Akira Rabelais und Stephan Mathieu komponierten Werk - zu Shelter Press zurück. Mit diesem bedeutenden neuen Album mit dem Titel ,Sub Re" setzt Bonnet seine langjährige Erforschung der musikalischen Möglichkeiten von Klang fort. Dabei erweitert er den konkreten Ansatz, den er bei der Groupe de Recherches Musicales (dem historischen und bedeutenden Pariser Studio, das Bonnet seit 2018 leitet) entwickelt hat, und belebt ihn neu durch eine Herangehensweise, die sich weniger auf die klare Manifestation von Klangmaterial als vielmehr auf dessen mehrdeutige Evokation konzentriert. ,Sub re" kann im Lateinischen ,unter dem Ding, unter der Substanz, unter der Materie" bedeuten. Genau dieser direkte Zugang zur Musik, der sich auf die Gewinnung von rohem Klangmaterial stützt, bildet die Grundlage dieses Albums. ,Under the matter" verweist somit auf den konkreten Aspekt der Musik, jedoch nicht auf das Konkrete, das verklärt wird und zu Dampf und Form wird, zum Substrat einer Idee. Vielmehr verweist es auf das Konkrete unter dem Konkreten, in der Immanenz der Klänge, in ihrem Werden, als treibende Kraft, wie eine Flut, wie ein Gewölbe aus gebieterischer und mächtiger Materie. Um dies zu erreichen, greift Bonnet auf eine Vielzahl von Klangquellen (akustisch, elektronisch, natürlich oder künstlich, absichtlich geschaffen oder zufällig gefunden) und eine Vielzahl von Kontexten und Anlässen zurück, um ihnen Gestalt zu verleihen. Der Satz ,a shell, a bell, a spell" (etwa: eine Muschel, eine Glocke, ein Zauber) war beispielsweise erstmals während eines Konzerts in Venedig zu hören, das im Zusammenhang mit Latifa Echakhchs Beitrag zum Schweizer Pavillon auf der Kunstbiennale 2022 organisiert wurde, während der letzte Satz auf der Platte, ,signalmirror", ein Stück abschloss, das 2023 auf der ersten Sound-Biennale in Sion (Schweiz) präsentiert wurde. Diese Elemente, geformt und losgelöst von ihrem ursprünglichen Kontext des Erscheinens, von den Orten und Menschen, die sie ermöglichten und ihnen lauschten, tragen zu einer komplexen Schichtung von Stimmungen und Klangwelten bei und helfen, ein kontrastreiches Album zu schaffen, in dem Dichte und Zartheit in einer Abfolge bewegter Wellen koexistieren, mal voller Erinnerungen, mal voller Bedauern, stets in Bewegung gesetzt durch ihre eigene Morphologie. Sub Re bezieht sich auch auf ein Kapitel in Victor Hugos ,Die Arbeiter des Meeres", eine Schlüsselstelle, in der sich die Hauptfigur angesichts einer kolossalen Aufgabe allein mitten auf dem Meer wiederfindet, unter einem gigantischen Schiffswrack, das in den Klauen eines isolierten Riffs gefangen ist, umgeben von Wasser, Strömungen und Winden, allein, um sich dem Unmöglichen zu stellen. Denn tatsächlich ist es unter der Oberfläche, wo Handlungen entstehen, Entscheidungen getroffen werden und die Intuition uns leitet.

Frag einfach Payson Power, den Gitarristen und kreativen Kopf hinter der Torontoner Band Daydream Plus. ,Als ich aufwuchs und einen Film sah, der am letzten Tag des Sommers spielt, dachte ich immer: ,Du bist schon beim deprimierenden Teil angelangt!` Der schöne Teil ist der vorletzte Tag des Sommers, denn das ist der letzte Tag, an dem man noch ohne Konsequenzen leben kann." Dieser Moment, in dem man noch Filme schauen und Videospiele spielen kann, bis die Sonne aufgeht, inspirierte Power dazu, das erste Album von Daydream Plus mit dem Titel ,Second Last Day of Summer" zu schreiben. Nach zwei EPs, auf denen sich das Trio aus Toronto in der schmalen Schnittmenge zwischen komplexem Math-Rock und urbanem City-Pop bewegte, erweiterte Power langsam seinen Horizont. Mit Elementen aus Videospiel-Soundtracks, energiegeladenen Anime-Melodien und Akkorden, die direkt aus dem Songbuch von Steely Dan stammen, erschafft Daydream Plus auf ,Second Last Day of Summer" eine detailreichere Welt. 40 years after its creation, MOß GARTEN – Sekvensstyrd 1981–1986 arrives as a compelling double vinyl LP, diving deep into the early Swedish DIY electronic scene. Inspired by pioneers such as Kraftwerk, Cabaret Voltaire, John Foxx, and The Human League, Mikael Isaksson developed a distinct sound situated between minimal electronics, industrial, synth wave, and experimental sound art. At its core was the sequencer: pulsing, programmed structures forming the backbone of dense, often hypnotic compositions.

Working initially with his cousin Jan or friend Thomas and later evolving into a largely one-man project, recordings were made on cassette tapes and in improvised studios—often under time pressure, frequently recorded and mixed within just a few hours. These very limitations gave the tracks their raw and immediate character. Pieces like “Moderna Kvinnor,” “Soon Soon,” “Ensam,” and “Music From The Border” exemplify the uncompromising, sequence-driven (“sekvensstyrd”) approach that defined this era.

Using an arsenal of analog synthesizers, early sequencers, and drum machines, the project created music that feels at once cold, mechanical, and deeply emotional. Sekvenssytrd 1981–1986 is more than a collection of archival recordings—it is a vivid document of a time when electronic music was conceived as a radical and deeply personal form of expression.

Newly signed to EMI Records, seven-piece boyband December 10 are ushering in a new era in pop music. Formed on camera during Netflix’s Simon Cowell: The Next Act (released globally on 10 December 2025), the hugely fun, utterly joyful, incredibly charismatic, often rambunctious and completely endearing group consist of Cruz (20), Danny (17), Hendrik (19), John (17), Josh (17), Nicolas (17) and Seán (19).

Within weeks of the series airing, the pace was relentless. December 10 sold out their Introducing! run of live dates across the UK and Ireland, adding extra shows twice in response to demand before all 13 dates sold out within minutes; built a huge online following, with millions of followers across social media; and released their debut single “Run My Way” on 30 January 2026.

Since then, the band have released the singles “Infinity (123)” and “Angel”, landed in the Official UK Top 10 best-selling vinyl singles of 2026 so far, and made their festival debut at Ultra Teens Fest Japan, performing to a crowd of more than 12,000 fans.

Summer 2026 will see December 10 embark on their headline UK and European tour, December 10: The Next Step, (which kicks off in Amsterdam on 26 June and wraps up in Dublin on 21 July,) release their debut EP, On Your Side, on 10 July, and make appearances at Summer Sonic Festival in Japan and Reading & Leeds Festival in the UK.

They’re not just brilliant singers, but accomplished musicians too, playing 14 instruments between them: Nicolas plays guitar and harmonica; Danny plays guitar; Josh plays guitar, cajón and drums; Hendrik plays guitar, bass and piano; Seán plays guitar, piano and harmonica; while John was due to take Grade 8 clarinet and piano this year - until life got a bit busy.

Parts & Labor co-founders Dan Friel and BJ Warshaw are joined by the simultaneous battery of drummers Christopher Weingarten and Joe Wong — asynchronous members during their critically acclaimed four-album run on indie rock titans Jagjaguwar. The power trios that made 2007's breakthrough Mapmaker and 2011's swan song Constant Future have merged into a single four-piece, at once a brand new vision, a clamorous continuation and a recapturing of the deafening sound of their "final" two shows in 2012. Eddy Current Suppression Ring make a surprise return with their sixth album In Light of Recent Events. True to form, it finds the disinterested careerists sidestepping expectation and working on their own terms, in their own time. Dialled in through closed-door weekly jams across 2025, that pent-up energy has only leaked via pseudonym-billed small-room shows as Jimmy and the Ringtones and Top Hats, record shop in-stores and country detours, plus a pair of phantom straight-to-YouTube singles (‘Swimming Hole’ and ‘Hard To Be Moved’), each with accompanying films by Chris Middlebrook and Amiel Courtin-Wilson respectively.

Modern-day anxiety and human disillusionment press through the album’s darker, more politically aware subject matter, as suburban melodramas and tender, hard-hitting reflections articulate everything you’ve never been able to. Taped within the band’s signature close-quarters claustrophobia, Brendan Suppression purges his dome with a newly awakened vocal range, while riff savant Eddy Current bleeds through quicksilver, blood-raw scratches, cut against the tension-wound, locked-in low end of Danny Current and Rob Solid.

Their forward-thinking take on black metal and uncompromising approach to their work marks them out as ones to watch when they present this new material live at festivals across Europe including Hellfest, Rock In Bourlon and Resurrection festival in the months to come. With a demo, an album and an experimental EP to their name, the four-piece retreated to the studio at the end of 2025 to write the music for Nous, le venin. Recorded in January 2026 with Amaury Sauvé (Birds in row, Igorrr, Pneu) at The Apiary Studio in Laval, France, the six tracks are the very embodiment of Mourir's approach to black metal. Although they draw inspiration from many artists in the old-school black metal world, they opted to lean into a more modern sound - one that would allow the depth of their sonic choices to shine. Blending elements of sludge and post-metal to the rawness of their black metal sound, and combining this with a mix that gives space to both the low frequencies and the high-octane viscerality, Mourir have created something both distinctive and captivating. Thematically, the band turns their detached gaze towards an ever-more untethered modern society, one that is inhospitable to those seeking meaning in the cruelty and absurdity of a seemingly senseless world. Yet within these tracks exists slivers of light, of hope and of luminosity - a belief that something better is possible is woven throughout the melodic passages and most celestial, ecstatic elements of their sound. One of the true, undisputed pioneers of Dutch techno, Steve Rachmad appears on Dekmantel for an EP of peerless machine music. On the 3-6-9 EP, the artist also known as Sterac, Parallel 9 and many other names plies a powerful trade in funked up, gritty and soulful techno made the proper way.

The connection between Rachmad and Dekmantel reaches back many years via his frequent appearances at the Dekmantel Festival — he has two performances at the 2026 edition as well as sets at Dekmantel Selectors lined up later in the summer. The 3-6-9 EP lands ahead of an album and world tour that marks 45 years in service to electronic music, nodding to Rachmad's earliest roots in electro funk through to his day-one embrace of house and techno as it made its way across the Atlantic from Chicago and Detroit.

There's a rowdy, rave-spirited energy to the synth hook bucking its way through the centre of '3 Creation Energy', coming on in brassy tones laced with artful distortion while the drums dutifully jack the way they ought to. Katatonia was formed in 1991 by Anders Nyström & Jonas Renkse. Aubrey is Allen Saei, a UK techno veteran who shaped the early scene as a DJ and record shop worker, but also with his influential label Solid Groove. It launched in 1991 and burned bright for 13 years with fans including Derrick May and Terry Francis. In 2026, it returns with a brand new EP from the boss himself, following a major studio upgrade. His sound harks back to those golden early days but in subtle ways: 'Timing Shock' has booming kicks and wispy synth details bring a future feel. 'Complex Vortex' is a trippy wormhole, 'Spinning Gravity' is deep, Detroit-style machine warmth and 'Cracker Jacker' burrows into a distant cosmic abyss. A fine return from Aubrey.

Originally released in 2003, With A Heartbeat brings together Pharoah Sanders, Bill Laswell and Graham Haynes in a collaboration that remains as elusive as it is forward-thinking. Now reissued by Glossy Mistakes, the album receives its first official vinyl edition, remastered and available both in standard black and a limited burgundy pressing.

At the core of the record lies an unusual but striking element: the steady pulse of a human heartbeat. Rather than a conceptual gesture, it becomes the foundation of the music itself-treated as a deep, bass-like rhythm that anchors the entire album. Around it, Laswell builds his unmistakable sonic world, drawing from dub techniques where basslines expand, dissolve, and re-emerge, and where space becomes as important as sound.
Across its extended compositions, the album unfolds slowly and deliberately. Initially conceived as a short-run cassette for Altered States Tapes, YL Hooi's nameless collection of textural apparitions oscillate between icy DIY minimalism, FX-drenched atmospherics and nang chamber dub. A ghost-like transmission, Hooi's voice serves to anchor an array of sonic abstractions and impressionistic melodic motifs as a sense of purgatorial ambience dominates throughout. Co-produced with alleged fellow Kallista Kult member Tarquin Manek (LST, M. Quake), Untitled's ultimate sensation is its halfway state, as if caught between worlds.

The album's final form speaks of its origins, recorded intermittently over a two year period (2017-2019). The extended time passage seeps into the song structures, spiralling and mutating from the same centre - the elegiac pulse of opener 'Title' presages the hymnal lilt of 'Straight Thru', before birthing the inverted bossa nova of 'W/O Love'. The result is a constantly shifting tableaux of shared liminal spaces. These songs seemingly emerge in plumes of smoke, magician's tricks conjured from the ether. It's a vision that ossifies at Untitled's midpoint with a cover of Love Joys' 'Stranger', the lovers rock original morphed into the transportive intimacy of Hooi's own hazy inner space, a totem of the LP's amorphous and ultimately sensuous qualities.

The sound from both down under and way out there in subspace, Untitled is an inspired masterstroke of experimental mystics. This 2021 Efficient Space edition is remastered and robed in new artwork that honours the Melbourne-based earth dragon's Chinese and Russian heritage.

Wet is the fifth full length album by Black Meteoric Star and the 10th release. Black Meteoric Star is a project Rayna started in 2006 when she was living in Berlin that brought together her life long love of dance music culture with spiritual themes, drag, and her formative experiences of S/M culture Black Meteoric Star has always had an avenger quality in Rayna's life and creative work, and this iteration plays that role in response to the current political landscape. Wet celebrates the long standing shared history of electronic music and queer leather/SM culture and imagines a future where these two cultural expressions are re-connected.

Electronic music and leather/SM are both ways that queer people have historically built community, created and shared knowledge, and kept each other safe. The current administration demonizes and villainizes queer people on the basis of a false moral framework of respectability, and its a trick. No amount of acting "respectable" will humanize queer people in the eyes of this administration and get us the rights we deserve. Revitalizing the connection between electronic music and queer leather/SM is a way to affirm the cultural power of both during a time when it has never been clearer that we keep each other safe. Rayna, a transgender woman with a deep commitment to all of these cultural forms, has a strong message to deliver with this album. She has been a DJ and producer of electronic music for over thirty years and has been producing community cultural events for as long. She has also been involved in kink and bdsm for decades and is a well-known and respected DJ in the New York leatherdyke scene. Rayna made international headlines in 2017 when she came out as transgender while touring with LCD Soundsystem. In 2018 she left the Grammy winning band to pursue projects that were more connected with her queer experience, including founding Voluminous Arts a cultural organization that supports trans artists. Black Meteoric Star is a continuation of a thread in Rayna's work that runs through her Paper Eyes project and her role in Black Leotard Front. This thread has a comic book or x rated graphic novel component based around her experiences of being a sad lonely lesbian trans girl who got bullied a lot and found escape and the possibility of being avenged through X men comics and Dungeons and Dragons books.

This release represents the musical union of two friends who, despite the distance, have always found in music the place where they stay close. This EP is the proof that when the connection is real, sound becomes common ground - a space to share moments, ideas, and energy beyond geography.

Both artists have been devoted to physical formats from the very beginning, especially vinyl. They have always been record collectors, and that passion shapes the intention behind this project: a work conceived with the depth, respect, and materiality that only vinyl can convey. This EP is more than music; it is a cultural object that preserves a way of understanding techno.

Creatively, Truncate and Pushmann set out to merge their sonic identities. The result is an EP charged with strength, built for the dancefloor, and defined by a clear aesthetic: raw energy, firm rhythm, and a contemporary reading of hardgroove and jackin. These are intense, direct tracks - the kind that emerge when two visions complement each other effortlessly.

In a scene often driven by speed and overstimulation, this release stands out for its authenticity. It is fast, funky techno, yes, but crafted with soul, intention, and emotional depth. It does not chase trends; it delivers groove, substance, and a recognisable sonic character from the first bar.

Inspired by rave culture and the pure roots of hardgroove, this EP offers a journey that blends functionality, sensitivity, and force. A project that reinforces LILA's philosophy: preserving the essence of techno and supporting those who create it with passion.

The perfect challenge for Saved My Life aka Siggatunez (Gooey) and Constantin Sankathi (The Healing Company). As a studio team, the two have spent the last decade transforming Italo disco, Brazilian samba, and French chanson into highly distinctive edits and remixes that stay etched in your memory.

For Crystal Grooves 803, the pair have refreshed Sharon Stoned's heartbreak anthem "Down" into an almost unbelievable track, a hybrid of garage and trance, anchored by Senpolya’s vocals, which capture the mood of the original with intense yet subtle precision: "Your favourite shirt I'll wear it everywhere." "Beauty & Thug" showcases another core strength of Saved My Life: reduce to the max. An R&B bootleg from the early 2000s is stripped of its slightly-too-mainstream choruses and rebuilt with string overdubs and studio craft into an hypnotic late-night jam. Soulful vocals always hit hardest when you least expect them: "So burgundy, the window to his soul." True to the spirit of SML's own imprint Downtown Romeo Records, the record comes complete with a sticker and an 8-page booklet including all lyrics. This release is dedicated to all people believing that music is more than just music: substance and meaning.

Now here is a special one. Soul legend Leon Ware makes a posthumous debut on Cataleya Music with For The Rainbow. This beautiful song is an album track from 2019’s Rainbow Deux, which was released two years after his passing. For The Rainbow has been remixed expertly by Coflo and Laroye. Coflo supplies three remixes! His ‘Original Retouch’ is closest to the midtempo original, enhancing the percussive elements slightly housewards and letting those piano keys work to their fullest. The Coflo Remix employs organ keys and has the vibe of classic NYC vocal House ala Blaze etc. His Backside mix is more subtle and spiritual. Laroye closes out the release with a smart broken beat revision, where bouncing drums dance between the positive vocals. A really classy package!

Fresh Meat Records is proud to present the vinyl re-release of From Chicago With Love, a record originally produced and released by Mazi Namvar (aka Audio Soul Project) in 2004. Though it may have flown under the radar upon its initial release, the record has recently gained a cult following, with prices on the secondhand market steadily climbing. A single copy now fetches as much as $170, with a recent test pressing selling for $100. Recognizing the demand, Fresh Meat Records has gone to work offering a beautiful repress of the record—one that truly does justice to the original while adding something special for long-time fans and newcomers alike.

From Chicago With Love Reprise is a celebration of a classic with a new dimension. The record includes a fresh fourth track, “Murmurs Low,” which features the saxophonist Jimmy Tripp and a spoken word performance by Mazi. The tracklist remains faithful to the original with the standout “Tattoo Of You” leading the way on the A1 side, sounding better than ever thanks to an impeccable re-cut by Lawrie Dunster at Curve Pusher. The deep grooves of “Tattoo Of You” still deliver their deep and mesmerizing house vibes, setting the tone for the rest of the release. In the A2 position, “Murmurs Low” provides a captivating, subdued moment, with the saxophone adding a melodic layer to the evolving rhythm that makes this track truly memorable.

On the B-side, “Down” takes its rightful place as the first track, maintaining a dubby soulful drive and emotional call to action. Closing out the record is “Let Me Know,” a track that brings the journey full circle, providing the perfect outro for the reissue and reminding us why this record is still beloved.

For some time now, followers of Field Medic have been piecing together clues about Floral Prince. The name has been mentioned in late night Twitter hints, secret YouTube leaks, teaser riddles, Instagram live sets, and standalone single drops. This unconventional approach paints a bigger picture for the 11-track project as a whole, set for release October 2nd from Run For Cover Records. Part mixtape, part album, part collection, part musical patchwork quilt, Floral Prince is the latest offering from Field Medic, aka the preeminent Bay Area freak folk artist Kevin Patrick Sullivan. It’s a reflection of his unique approach to songwriting and a creative drive that can’t be contained to the traditional album format. Field Medic’s songwriting rarely slows down; even after the release of his 2019 full-length fade into the dawn and the busy touring schedule that followed, Sullivan still found himself flush with new songs and ideas. As he attempted to earmark certain songs for his next release Sullivan began to chafe at the pressures of a follow-up album. Longing for the spontaneity of Field Medic’s earlier work, Sullivan found inspiration in what he calls the “full-time freestyle” mindset where he writes and records songs on the fly with a four-track, usually with a self-imposed limit of three takes. “This style lends itself to more off-the-cuff lyrics and recordings that communicate their point much clearer to my ears,” he explains. “It’s also fun.”

The process proved surprisingly satisfying, often capturing the diary-like nature of Sullivan’s songwriting more accurately than some of the music he’d been poring over. “The songs born from this method aren’t always ‘hits,’ he says. “But they feel much more important to me…closer to how I really feel.” Some of these charming homespun missives made their way onto the internet, spurring fans to follow the breadcrumbs towards these first glimpses into Floral Prince and the ever-expanding Field Medic mythology. “I realized the songs I was saving for another album were much less focused and effective than some of the freestyles I had been creating and subsequently leaking,” Sullivan says. “I think that’s because I really enjoyed the process of writing and recording the freestyles, whereas the ‘hits’ I was attempting to make were being approached as more of a chore.” Floral Prince officially began to see the light of day through a series of stand-alone singles released throughout early 2020 in tandem with episodes of Sullivan’s homemade webseries, the field medic show. To invite fans further into Field Medic’s unique world of achingly beautiful melodies and conversational lyricism, songs like the atmospheric ballad “better way” and the Alex Menne (pickleboy/Great Grandpa) collaboration “talkin johnny & june (your arms around me)” were shared alongside the YouTube show’s accompanying live versions. Other tracks—like rousing opener “-h-o-u-s-e-k-e-y-z-” and the longing “i want you so bad it hurts”—were repurposed from the fade into the dawn sessions to finally find a home on Floral Prince. Elsewhere “it’s so lonely being sober” exemplifies the unvarnished appeal of the full-time freestyle attitude. The song’s direct lyrics and single-take phone recording preserve the deeply personal storytelling, relatable details, and palpable emotions that make Field Medic’s work so intimate and enthralling.

Although Floral Prince is culled from several years of Field Medic songs, its 11 tracks have a sense of cohesion that can be attributed to Sullivan’s singular vision and willingness to allow the listener into his life. “These songs were written through different seasons of my life but they all share a common theme of quiet, nagging, yet somehow defiant insecurity,” he explains. “To hear them all grouped together reminds me that I’ve always felt more or less the same way, and have had the same obsessive tendencies my whole life that have often led to self-destructive behavior. Maybe this is catharsis.” In the end Floral Prince is actually many things at once: a snapshot of an artist shaking off the perceived boundaries of his medium; a document of years of Sullivan’s life preserved in musical form; the closing of one songwriting chapter and the start of another. Or perhaps as Sullivan puts it, “All songs have their day…”
