Fresh off a rework of Papa Levi with single Ribena, London’s jungle pioneers 4am Kru drop their highly anticipated debut album Incognito Rhythm featuring all the tracks that have cemented their reputation as the go-to act for raw, live jungle music.

Having already taken the 2024 festival circuit by storm with appearances at Outlook Origins, Boomtown, Boardmasters, Reading+ Leeds, The Blind Tiger, Parklife Waterworks, Boundary and a milestone Saturday night closing set at Glastonbury’s Temple Stage, 4am Kru continue to draw audiences into the madness of their raucous blend of 1993-1994 influenced jungle. First bursting onto the scene post-lockdown, the falling monitors and flying bodies of their shows were particularly thrilling for ravers who had turned 18 in isolation.

Originally developing their live sound in indie bands while sharing a studio in Tottenham, the duo quickly realized that the traditional DJ set couldn’t contain the energy of their act. They have since surrendered to the chaos of their incredibly physical performances, nursing chipped bones and back injuries, deep finger taping, chalking up and wearing shoes designed for skipping rope whilst rewiring what it meant to move their bodies. Their innovation extends to the equipment, with the duo reinventing a way to deliver their signature throbbing basslines with a Roland SPD SX drum pad as thick as a car tire. Their upcoming UK tour this October promises to further showcase their immersive, disruptive sound.

4am Kru’s latest single Ribena breathed new life into Papa Levi’s iconic British reggae classic Militancy following the release of hard-hitting Wutt this past July, setting the stage for their most ambitious project yet. Their debut album draws from a wide range of influences in addition to 4am Kru’s signature blend of 90s jungle flavours, from obscure slow jam R&B like Angela Bofill, Janet Jackson and Prince, early hardcore bands like Hüsker Dü, off kilter Scottish folk, and even classical music. The project is a snapshot of the incognito, nocturnal world that the duo have dwelled in for the past two years, a time capsule of well-worn songs played between midnight and 4am. An extraordinary debut, 4am Kru’s Incognito Rhythm is an immersive, razor sharp, face melting journey through their show-stopping live sound.

Following on from their many mutual remixes and first collaborative EP “Pleamar” (Wonderwheel Recordings 2020) Chancha Via Circuito y El Búho return with a new EP “Tenalach"" which sees the duo enter new territories and soundscapes. This mysterious, atmospheric and melancholic EP is like the soundtrack to a videogame that takes place in a strange and wonderful parallel universe.

Croaking frogs sit next to driving snares on the genre-defying Sapo Cururú, birds float above strobing synths on Oropéndola while Sumay’s epic synth lines melt into Chancha’s trademark percussions on Sumay. Opener El Samurai is perhaps the closest to the pair’s well-known folktronic sound, marrying cowbells with bowing violins and its animal-esque synth line.

While the BPM may have risen, this is neither ‘downtempo’ nor ‘umtempo’ and an EP that cannot easily be pigeon-holed - it is fresh and original. It also reflects a darker side to the pair’s music, a sub-conscious reflection of a changing world, holding in each song a constant tension and the desire to escape to new realities where the connection between humans and nature is blurred and equal."

Reloading, revamping, reinstalling - we've peered under the hood of last year's singles, Your Life and Take It, and decided they required the peak-time-remix-alignment. While Your Life's refix was self-inflicted by Patrick, Take It required the expertise of frequent collaborator Physical Therapy. Both reworks maintain the originals' essence, while bringing higher BPMs, weightier subs, and jacked up percussion to the table. Test driven during the summer of '24, this package is ready to rip.

Tokyo-based emerging label INFODUMP Recordings, led by Takuro Hasumi, who captivated audiences with the unique and left-field “Fafrotskies vol.1” released in 2023, has eagerly released a new work titled “Fafrotskies vol.2”! The EP features three tracks that subtly color the dance floor:

“High Fidelity” (A1): A mid-tempo, synth-driven, minimalistic, and romantically imaginative time-warp house track at BPM 113.
“Sparta” (B1): A tribal left-field house track with added electronic and experimental elements, clocking in at BPM 122.

The EP starts with ”P Spectrum”, a psy trance oddisee containing all the elements to “give you the power” ;) Ravy sounds, fast bpm, and big acid baselines, following by the track tht gives the name to the EP: “Acid Asia”, a more cruising house track, with original sounds from the country of rising sun. B side follows with “Munchakoopas” a nice house track, with sweet melodies, acid synths and the sample of my favorite nintendo character: Yoshi. The EP ends up with Cosmic Flower, a strong percussion over a progressive melody and psytrancy vocals that will make you lose your head.

I eulogised the “Arcadian folk surrealism” of his 1974 ‘Over Here In Europe’ but, if anything, this informal collection of intimate home-studiorecordings is even better. Recorded between 1973 and76 whilst living in Belgium this is the kind of assured, organic freewheeling folk music that has the mellow, introspective rough-edged feel of some lost private-press LP, the kind rightly revered by Endless Boogie’s Paul Majors as “real people” music. Only one song has seen the the light of day before now - ‘Taoist Tale’ from his 1984 album ‘Word Games’. This recording from a decade earlier loses no power in its folkier stripped down style driven by Tucker’s strong narrative.
While living in bucolic seclusion in Belgium with Marie-Claire, Tucker invited visiting musicians (Derroll Adams, Wizz Jones, Maggie Holland, Dave Evans, Ian Anderson) into his home studio to play and live tape whatever songs he had at hand. Maggie Holland and Ian A Anderson feature, while Tucker found a freeing simplicity in just guitar, ’70s organ, bass and piano. We are so grateful to Ian A Anderson, who carefully kept and curated these recordings from 50 years ago. “Every time I would leave, Tucker would hand me another tape full of songs”. Ian worked with Tucker and ourselves to present this wonderful album. The collection is among Tucker’s finest - free-ranging, playful, intimate - his Songpoet imagination unbound and in full bloom. 1 – For My People
A low-slung groover, “For My People” opens the EP in fine form. Soft chords lay the groundwork as the bassline bobs and weaves through the rhythm section. Liquid synth stabs soon punctuate the groove, as dreamy layers float in and out. Without a doubt, this is a high quality head-nodder and a dancefloor delight.

2 – Let’s Dance
Elevating the BPMs ever-so-slightly, “Let’s Dance” gets moving with a proper, straight ahead rhythm, sprinkled with just enough shuffle to add that P. Scott signature. Blippy keys bounce atop a backdrop of sweet synth chords while the bassline punches through in refined fashion. This is the Sistrum brand of deep, hypnotic, spiritual house music, straight up.

3 - Abstract Jazz
This one is all about those keys… Amidst the crisp, punchy beats, the electric piano dances and hypnotizes. There is really only one option when this cut is on the system - close your eyes and feel it.

4 - The Detroit Track
Nothing less than an homage to his hometown and the sounds and culture that have shaped a musical revolution, “The Detroit Track” is a study in timeless quality. Darling it's better down where it's wetter: joining Vel for a jam session « under the sea », it’s Anetha! Driving percussions are combining with a pulsating psytrance bassline, pure magic: « Ain’t We Mermaids (C1), dear? » Vel, ever the master of the salty beats, slows it down just enough to say, «I Don’t Care (C2),» as she deconstructs. A few moments later… She’s at it again—just when the BPMs are peaking, she draws us into a state of floating lethargy. That’s the absorbing power of Ambient Core (C3).
