„Raw & Alive – The Seeds In Concert“ ist möglicherweise das beste „Live“-Album, das es je gab. Das Album wurde 1968 gegen Ende der Karriere des ursprünglichen Quartetts veröffentlicht und war ein Versuch, die Live-Begeisterung, für die diese Garagenlegenden bekannt waren, auf Vinyl zu übertragen. Das Album wird von Seeds-Fans hoch geschätzt, da es spannende Versionen von Bandklassikern wie „No Escape” und „Up In Her Room” sowie hervorragende neue Originalsongs wie das punkige „Satisfy You” enthält, wobei letzteres eine klare Rückkehr zur alten Form nach dem blumigen Longplayer „Future” darstellt. Die meisten wissen jedoch nicht, dass die Aufnahmen tatsächlich live im Studio gemacht wurden und der Applaus erst nachträglich hinzugefügt wurde. Ursprünglich war geplant, eine Seeds-Show vor Publikum aufzunehmen. Im Februar 1968 wurde eine Live-Studioaufnahme vor dem Fanclub der Band aufgenommen, die jedoch in letzter Minute verworfen wurde. Die zweite CD unserer Deluxe-Vinyl-Neuauflage enthält dieses geplante Album in der Form, in der es für die Veröffentlichung vorbereitet wurde, direkt vom bisher unveröffentlichten Masterband. Die frühe Version enthielt den seltenen Titel „Hubbly Bubbly Love“, der für „Raw & Alive“ nicht neu aufgenommen wurde. FINALLY! The very first commercial release of two legendary remixes of Arthur Russell's "In The Light Of The Miracle". Both are widely regarded as transcendent masterpieces and very much befitting of the title “holy grails”.

These long-beloved mixes are the types you'd wish would last for eternity. With almost 30 minutes of music here, we very nearly get our desires granted. At last, these jaw-dropping mixes are widely available to every Arthur fan in the world. This is musical perfection.

The deep Loft classic "In The Light Of The Miracle" remained unreleased during Arthur's lifetime, finally discovered when Phillip Glass included the original version on Another Thought on Point Music in 1993. As Steve Knutson told us, when Another Thought was being put together, the plan was to release a companion album of remixes that was overseen by Steve D'Aquisto but the project only got as far as these two remixes of "In The Light Of The Miracle".

Some dodgy scans of some centre label designs suggest that Point Music might’ve been planning to release these on a 12" but it didn’t happen. The story goes that Gilles Peterson heard the remixes on a visit to the Point Music offices and wanted to release them on Talkin’ Loud. We’re not sure how many white label copies made it out into the wild, but again, these remixes didn’t make it to a proper release.

These remixes both extend and undeniably enhance the original, elevating it to new heights. The 13 minute remix on the A-side is by Danny Krivit & Tony Smith with editing duties performed by Tony Morgan. As ever with Arthur, the music is almost impossible to describe: is it Disco? Garage House? Avant Garde? None of these tags do full justice to its sheer majesty. You best just listen. Stretching out the original with some unbelievably great percussive elements, until we're in a deeply spiritual, otherworldly realm, it's just too beautiful for words. As many have claimed, it's the prototype for EVERYTHING.

The "Ponytail Club Mix (Part 1 & 2)", produced by Tony Morgan in the mid-90s, is in a more up-tempo style, with vocals higher in the mix, the BPM upped to 120 and the addition of a housey 4/4 kick drum. A 14 minute epic, you could say this is a more straight ahead "club-friendly" mix (but can things ever be that straightforward with Arthur?!) It also has some really interesting vocal parts not used in the other versions, including some vocals from guest poet Allen Ginsberg.

These remixes are part of the same original project that also produced the Another Thought album so it seems only right that they have a sleeve that matches. Thanks again to Janette Beckman for letting us use another of her photos of Arthur and the rest of the design follows what Margery Greenspan, Tina Lauffer and Michael Klotz did for Another Thought back in 1994.

Simon Francis remastered the original audio for both tracks and Cicely Balston's precise cut for Alchemy at AIR Studios ensures this 12" well and truly slaps. The immaculate Record Industry pressing will ensure this incredibly sought-after treasure finds a home in many more collections, this and every year.

Berlin-Hamburg duo Session Victim return to the ever-reliable Delusions Of Grandeur imprint with Chapter Two of their Sidequests trilogy, marking yet another high point in their almost twenty year journey through heartfelt, sample-rich music. Overflowing with analog warmth, sundrenched textures and irresistible grooves, the release also features a stellar remix from label cofounder and deep house pioneer Jimpster who kicks off the EP. Here he takes Behind The Glass into spaced out house-not-house territory. With crisp drum programming, trademark Rhodes, and subtle pads that build over time, his version delivers that late-night sophistication he's known for—steering the downtempo original in a clubbier direction without losing its blissed-out essence. Up next we have a brand new collaborative effort with long time friend, label mate and fellow sample nerd Nebraska. Make It Happen is a dusty, slo-mo house groove featuring delicate keys, euphoric strings and that unmistakable sense of journey. It’s just the kind of low-slung epic house they do best—intimate yet club-ready, nostalgic but never retro. Flipping over, Too Soft To Be Loud, another collaboration with Viken Arman, follows with a jazzy, almost samba-esque rhythm and swirling atmospherics. Loose percussion, catchy guitar riffs and Rhodes stabs collide with off-kilter dub FX and soft vocal snippets giving the track a laid-back, live-band feel that harks back to their See You When You Get There era. Hubcap Candy dives deep into funk territory. Nebraska’s on point boogie bassline drives the track forward as crunchy drums and layers of synths create a dreamlike haze. It’s loopy, moody, and finds Session Victim at their very best. Closing out the EP we have the original of Behind The Glass, a headsy, beatdown piece that slowly unfolds over an unconventional brass-like bassline and delicate guitar textures, paying homage to the golden age of Trip Hop haziness and it’s pioneer turntable spirit. Blending crate-digging sensibilities with forward-thinking production, this latest release solidifies Session Victim’s reputation as genre-blurring tastemakers, and their chemistry with Delusions Of Grandeur remains as strong as ever

12:01, time to wake up! Aris 1201 is back on CAF? with a new record. Deeply rooted in the city center of Geneva, this eight tracker is as smokey as its rush hour traffic jams. Bringing together old tracks with new material, this album spans from 4/4 club-ready highways to hip-hop inspired groovy beats. Using a minimum amount of ingredients (raw samples, percussive rhythmics, grainy textures), Aris 1201 delivers a result full of layers and complexity. So only one thing to do: hop in front of the Blunt Mobile and have a nice ride.

The Rhythm Makers's Soul On Your Side is flawless proto-disco funk. The Bronx-based band - that later went on to form heavyweight disco outfit GQ - originally released this treasure in 1976 and it's long been a hard to find record. It's also rare to find a record this hard. Captivating funk at its rawest, no doubt.

Storming out the gate with the rollicking Loft/Garage staple "Can You Feel It (Part 1)", the listener is immediately put on notice that this LP is just a little bit special. The title track, "Soul On Your Side", is a classic dancer and the basis of GQ's future hit "Disco Nights". But it's perhaps "Zone", a huge Baldelli track, that the record is best known for. Hypnotic psyched-out cosmic-disco / cosmic funk, it's an unrelenting groove that really thrusts the party into hyperdrive. With doses of scintillating Latin and pulsating African rhythms driving the pumping tune, atop an unstoppable bassline and imaginative, soul-slathered keyboard figures, it's basically a full-on funk assault. You might need a lie-down after this.

But there's no let-up on the B-Side, immediately grooving thanks to "Funk-N-You", a laidback glider that just rolls in the sleek style. Gorgeous harmony skills are displayed on "Street Dreamin'". Beautiful and gritty funk, by turns. "You're My Last Girl" is an airy ballad with two leads before the legendary "Monterey" enters the fray. A much-sampled instrumental and heavy disco-funk nugget, it contains an amazing B-Boy drum break making the whole LP worth the price of admission. "Can You Feel It (Part 2)" closes out this spectacular set.

The Rhythm Makers had been gigging around New York City since the late ’60s, having initially come together as Sabu and the Survivors, named after bassist Keith “Sabu” Crier. They eventually - for this album at least! - settled on The Rhythm Makers and cut one record for the small De-Lite subsidiary Vigor. The core lineup featured Crier, keyboardist Herb Lane, drummer Kenny Banks and rhythm guitarist Rahiem Leblanc.

Mastered for vinyl by Simon Francis, cut by Cicely Balston for Alchemy at AIR Studios with artwork restored at Be With HQ, this new edition should hopefully bring this album into the homes and record boxes of many more people.

Focus, integrity and substance, all allied to a relentless work ethic and that essential (if indefinable) sprinkling of magic dust, have kept Nick Warren at the top of the electronic music tree for not far short of forty years.

In that timespan, Nick has been tour DJ for Massive Attack, held a residency at Cream, been a Glastonbury regular, and become the UK’s most successful export to Argentina (in no small part due to his touring brand The Soundgarden). As half of Way Out West, he has helped write (and re-write) the rule book for club-based electronic acts, achieving true longevity without compromise. He has curated over a dozen essential compilations – a mainstay of the Global Underground series whose heavyweight influence is still felt to this day, an in-demand decknician for pivotal brands such as Renaissance and Balance, and the very first DJ entrusted with creating a blueprint for the now iconic Back to Mine series.

It's quite the CV, a career many can only dream of. But Nick has long had one further itch in need of scratching. Inspired at a young age by his dad’s Jean-Michel Jarre and Tangerine Dream albums, coming of age with experimental labels like 4AD and Factory, roots deep in the dub-wise scene of his native Bristol, a long time collector of exotica and obscure film soundtracks…all that knowledge and passion has long been crying out to be channelled into a Warren solo album.

All of which brings us to the career-defining Turbulence. The world is certainly a turbulent place as Nick gets set to unleash his masterwork, but the musical turbulence at work here arguably takes its lead from other interpretations of the word – turbulence as a feeling of heightened intensity, turbulence marked by a sense of unpredictability.

Turbulence is a window into Nick’s musical soul, and the myriad styles and influences that reside there, drip-fed into a melodic melting pot to create a unique sonic stew. Tempos and styles switch and interlock effortlessly, the mood ebbs and flows like the best DJ sets, and the running order, from the ethereal opener Loveland all the way through to the achingly beautiful closing cut Sadly (in tandem with Tripswitch, one of several noteworthy collaborations) showcases an artist at the top of his game, and with a deep understanding of the concept of the long player.

For the first time in over 20 years, BMG have commissioned a new DJ remix of Rapper’s Delight. BMG will release a double sided 12” with the classic 14 mins long version of Rapper’s Delight on Side A, with the brand new Greg Wilson & Ché remix on Side B.

Rapper’s Delight, is widely regarded as one of the biggest, if not the biggest, commercial hip-hop tracks in the history of Hip-hop. It is considered to be, one of THE most influential hip-hop tracks of all time, credited with bringing rap music to a mainstream audience. Artist’s influenced by this track include; Jay-Z & Nas, Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg, Run DMC, to name a few.

This iconic track has been sampled over 215 times!

There's no denying that 3 Chairs sole self-titled album, first released in 2004 and now reissued in a fresh 2025 edition, is a high watermark in Detroit electronic music culture: a decidedly dusty and ultra-deep collective endeavour from Motor City heavyweights Kenny Dixon Jr (AKA Moodymann), Malik Pittman, Rick Wilhite and Theo Parrish that somehow managed to sound even better than their respective solo productions. Highlights include the chugging, Rhodes-laden beatdown sweetness of '3 Chairs Theme' (featuring Norma Jean Bell), the ultra-deep and gently jazzy dustiness of 17-minute epic 'Blackbone Waltz', the organic deep house excellence of 'Dance of Nubia' (which sounds like it could have featured on the St Germain album Boulevard) and the sample-rich, slow-motion shuffle of 'Underwater People'.

NYC punk-chic, discodelic funk band Say She She is back with Cut & Rewind, their politically-charged, dancefloor-crushing third album. Indian Summer of Love finds The Bongolian immersed in a new set of sounds and influences for a new Belle Epoch. It’s a musical landscape informed by the Sixties psychedelia of India via a Haight Ashbury happening.

It’s a kaleidoscopic vision that takes us from a 20th century Fin de Siècle and lands us in the here and now of the 21st Century. It’s for dancers, for seekers and is all underscored by The Bongolian’s trademark heavy rhythms and breaks. It’s another fine instalment of essential cuts for the dancefloor and for high fidelity listening, quality is guaranteed.

From the East to the West, welcome to the Indian Summer of Love. Nasser Bouzida performs drums, percussion, guitars and keys whilst the album features several new flavours to the Bongolian sound with the prominent instrumentation of sitars and bansuri, along with flute, trumpet, saxophone and trombone performances from several stellular international guest musicians.

In 2005, when they formed Cotonete, the Parisian musicians secretly dreamed of playing 70s Brazilian funk in Brazil. Having become specialists in the style, the dream became a reality 12 years later thanks to Brazilian singer and actress Simone Mazzer (awarded Newcomer of the Year), who decided to hire the Parisian group to record her second album.
The engagement quickly turned into a collaboration, with Cotonete taking part in the selection of the repertoire, the arrangements, and the production of the album. It was prepared and recorded in Paris at Studio Prado in July 2016. It would be mixed and released in Brazil in 2017.
And so, Simone finally invited Cotonete to come and set foot on Brazilian soil. Five concerts, including two wonderful ones at the SESC Copacabana in Rio, were organized for the album's release. It was during this tour that the band met singer Di Mélo, with whom they recorded the album "Atemporel" in Sao Paulo, featuring the track "A.E.I.O.U."

Nearly 10 years after its recording, the album "Simone Mazzer & Cotonete" is finally being reissued on vinyl on Prado Records. It has been remixed for the occasion by Fabien Girard.
Simone Mazzer will be in France in September 2025 and performing at the Studio de l'Ermitage on September 19th for the official vinyl release.

Chris Hontos und Aaron Anderson sind sowohl als Nuke Watch als auch als ihre auf Samples basierenden Cousins Beat Detectives tätig. Die Detectives sind das, was The Beatnuts unter dem Einfluss einer experimentellen dissoziativen Droge produzieren würden, während Nuke Watch eine freie Improvisationsband ist, die keinen Grund sieht, zu quietschen, und an Vergnügen glaubt. Das neue Album von Nuke Watch, "Grave New World", ist ihr zehntes seit Beginn des Projekts im Jahr 2020. Diese Musik taucht ein, kollidiert und quillt aus einer Tasche heraus, der Sound einer elektrischen Welt, die sich selbst mulcht. Modulare Synthesizer breiten sich wie Cordyceps in Räumen voller Bass, Saxophon und Handtrommeln aus und hinterlassen einen neuen, verseuchten Raum: leuchtend, sicher und verrückt. Diese Musik wurde mit Instrumenten gespielt, ein Großteil davon komplett live. Die meisten Tracks sind Aufnahmen von Hontos und Anderson mit ein oder zwei weiteren Musikern, es handelt sich also größtenteils um Trio-Aufnahmen. Man ist versucht, Grave New World als Fusion zu bezeichnen, aber das trifft es nicht ganz. Otto Willbergs Bassspiel ist so versiert, dass es Giganten wie Percy Jones und Jaco heraufbeschwört, und Leonard King nähert sich dem Bass ein wenig wie jemand aus Felas Africa 70. Die drei verarbeiteten Blasinstrumente - Zack Stafford an der verarbeiteten Flöte, Christopher Farstad am MIDI-Blasinstrument und Cole Pulice am verarbeiteten Saxophon - bringen die Musik in die Nähe des Jazz, obwohl keine der Kompositionen der Band wirklich nach Jazz klingt. Outtakes aus der Star Wars Foley-Datenbank? Eine berührungsempfindliche Multimedia-Gewächshausausstellung, die von einer Kindergartengruppe übernommen wurde? A brilliant jazz pianist, composer, arranger and bandleader "who could make the outlands of modern music feel like the most hospitable of places" (The Guardian), Keith Tippett's second album is oft-regarded as his Canterbury album.

Indeed, not only does he draw heavily on Soft Machine members past, present and future but the album title itself archly references a Soft Machine composition. Ray Babbington handles bass alongside Neville Whitehead and the drums are shared between Brian Spring (Nucleus), Robert Wyatt(!) and Phil Howard (who would go on to replace Wyatt in Soft Machine). Gary Boyle (Isotope) is on guitar whilst the great percussionist Tony Uter is enlisted for his conga and cow bell expertise. Elton Dean on Alto Saxello, cornetist Marc Charig and Nick Evans on trombone round out this quite stunning ensemble.

Dedicated to You, But You Weren't Listening presents a collective of superhuman musicians really, *really* enjoying themselves in the studio. The sheer exuberance of the performance is totally infectious. It's wild, energetic, atmospheric and, bluntly, bordering on chaotic at points. In a word, it's beautiful.

Robert Wyatt's drumming opens the record with a bang on the majestic Be With favourite "This Is What Happens". Some have described his work here as "easily the most inspired of his career on record." It's an ultra-funky conga-driven groove that truly sparks via the duelling interplay between the three horn players. In the background, Keith's insistent piano, in conversation with those unignorable drums, is the anchor that keeps this piece rollicking away. Breathtaking.

The epic, energetic "Thoughts to Geoff" is a 10-minute jammer that tends towards the dissonant and improvisational but becomes more fluid, laconic and melodic as it unravels. The interplay between soloists and ensembles is particularly dazzling here - blazing solos by Evans, Charig and Tippett himself in a flourish of angular arpeggios interspersed with chordal elocution. Phew.

Up next, the no less-urgent Mingus-referencing "Green and Orange Night Park" is a soaring example of ambitious jazz mixed with rock aggression, with Dean strutting his stuff by launching into a scorching solo. An absolutely jaw-dropping piece. Arguably the highlight of this album of huge highlights!

Though much of the album tends to fall on the raucous side ("Gridal Suite" approaches free-jazz at its most chaotic and, dare we say it, "difficult"), there are a few more sedate, at times spacey numbers, such as the deeply impressionistic "Five After Dawn". The rhythmically complex "Black Horse" is the most accessible track here, a sort of swinging Big Band number with tight grooves, soaring horn & reed melodies, a sizzling Boyle guitar solo and tasty electric piano riffs from Tippett. An hypnotic climax to a staggering record.

This Be With edition of Dedicated to You, But You Weren't Listening has been re-mastered from the original Vertigo master tapes, Simon Francis’ mastering working together with Cicely Balston's cut at Abbey Road Studios to weave their usual magic with these wonderful recordings. Carrboro, NC’s inimitable synthesizer duo MARV follow up their well-received 2021 opus Keyboard Suite I with a second volume co-released by enmossed and Softer Recordings. As a (regrettably) posthumous release, Keyboard Suite II documents MARV in their fully matured state with melodies that eschew easy categorization and a much-expanded studio effects and processing palette. But the same dreamy languidity marking their previous releases remains, drawing us into their visions of a summer day spent in the shade, by a babbling creek. As a storm approaches from the distance - keyboards saturated by tape into distortion, bursts of noise from idiosyncratic electronics, aleatoric stuttering - MARV grants us an album’s worth of sonic sublimation.

Aber wenn Sie zufällig im September 2023 vorbeigekommen sind, konnten Sie vielleicht Fiddle-Melodien hören, die von den Kiefern widerhallen, BBS-Geräusche in leeren Räumen und die Klänge von Weirs, die ihr zweites Album und ihr Debüt bei Dear Life Records aufnahmen: Diamond Grove. Weirs ist ein experimentelles Kollektiv, das aus der Musikszene im Zentrum von North Carolina hervorgegangen ist und zu gleichen Teilen aus Oldtime-Folk und DIY-Noise besteht. Die Besetzung von Weirs - weder endgültig noch besonders wertvoll - umfasst Child-Lanning, Justin Morris und Libby Rodenbough (seine Mitstreiter bei Sluice); Evan Morgan, Courtney Werner und Mike DeVito von Magic Tuber Stringband; sowie die treuen Andy McLeod, Alli Rogers und Oriana Messer, die bis tief in die Spätsommernächte spielten. Das Ergebnis sind die neun Tracks von Diamond Grove, aufgenommen mit einer provisorischen Signalkette, die aus geliehenem Equipment der gesamten Community zusammengestellt wurde. Das Weirs-Projekt begann als Tape-Experimente mit traditionellen Melodien, die Child-Lanning im Winter 2019 unter dem Namen Pluviöse aufgenommen hatte. Daraus entstand das erste Weirs-Album Prepare to Meet God, das im Juli 2020 in Eigenregie veröffentlicht wurde und eine Zusammenarbeit zwischen Child-Lanning und Morris während der COVID-Pandemie war. Die seltsamen Umstände dieses Debüts - eine gemeinschaftliche Tradition von Live-Songs, die isoliert voneinander aufgenommen wurden - werden durch Diamond Grove aufgehoben, ein Album, das in der unwiederholbaren Konvergenz von Menschen, Ort und Zeit verwurzelt ist. Auf dem neuen Album setzen Weirs ihre Suche nach dem besten Weg fort, sogenannte ,traditionelle" Musik weiterzuentwickeln, zu bewahren und zu befreien. Weirs fangen Songs ein, deren Interpretationskanon noch offen genug ist, um neben denen zu stehen, die sie zuvor gesungen haben, aber niemals über ihnen. Dies sind keine Versuche, definitive Versionen zu schaffen. Die Aufnahmen auf Diamond Grove fühlen sich eher wie Besuche als wie Überarbeitungen an. Und die Frage, die Weirs auf diesem Album stellen, ist nicht, wie sie einfach die Tradition ihrer Vorfahren fortsetzen können, sondern wie traditionelle Musik heute klingen könnte. Für Weirs könnte die Geschichte dieser Tradition weniger aus dem Folk-Revival stammen als aus der Musique concrète, weniger aus makellosen alten Meisteraufnahmen als aus etwas wie The Shadow Ring, wenn diese aus dem evangelikalen Süden kämen. Wenn man ,(A Still, Small Voice)" hört, spürt man, wie die Kraft der Hymne etwas Gleichwertigem weicht: den Dielen, dem Knistern des Feuers, dem Zubereiten und Essen von Mahlzeiten. Diese Spannung zwischen Bewahrung und Verfall ist das innere Leuchten von Diamond Grove. Nehmen wir ,Doxology l": Die Melodie von ,Old Hundred", einer Hymne aus der Sacred-Harp-Tradition, wird in MIDI umgewandelt, über iPhone-Lautsprecher abgespielt und in der Septemberluft neu aufgenommen. Für manche Revivalisten mag diese Hymne, gesungen mit der ganzen Pracht gefälschter Auto-Tune-Stimmen, blasphemisch klingen. Aber Ohren, die beispielsweise auf die Hyperpop-Produktionen der letzten Jahrzehnte eingestellt sind, werden sofort die spannungsgeladene Schönheit des digital verfremdeten Shape-Note-Gesangs verstehen. Dieselbe Spannung belebt ,l Want to Die Easy". Weirs' Version basiert auf der Aufnahme von A Golden Ring of Gospel, die in der Folkways-Sammlung Sharon Mountain Harmony verewigt ist. Die Melodien, Texte und Strukturen sind weitgehend unverändert geblieben. Aber die ,reine" Klarheit der Stimmen der frühen Aufnahme ist verschwunden. An ihre Stelle tritt der distanzierte Klang des Silos der Milchfarm, in dem Weirs ihre Version aufgenommen hat, dessen natürlicher Nachhall von zwei Sekunden die ursprüngliche Nähe ersetzt. Auf diese Weise wird der Klang des Aufnahmeortes selbst zu einem Teil der traditionellen Darbietung. Das Herzstück von Diamond Grove ist Weirs' Interpretation von ,Lord Bateman", einer Melodie, die Jean Ritchie als ,große Ballade" bezeichnete: Sie wurde gespielt, wenn die Arbeit getan war und der Tanzabend zu Ende war. Es ist ein Lied aus dem 18. Jahrhundert - so alt wie die Diamond Grove Farm - über einen gefangenen Abenteurer, der laut Nic Jones den Geist eines Errol-Flynn-Films verkörpert. Wie viele großartige und oft a cappella gesungene Interpretationen steht auch bei diesem ,Lord Bateman" die Stimme im Vordergrund und unterstreicht die Bedeutung des Geschichtenerzählens für das Zusammenkommen der Kinder. Neu ist hier der immense Bordun, der die Erzählung in ein unaufhörliches Gewebe elementarer Kräfte verwandelt. Es ist ein verschwommenes Murmeln kollektiver Saiten, das den Kanon von Ritchie und June Tabor ebenso bereichert wie Pelt's Ayahuasca oder Henry Flynt's Hillbilly Tape Music. Obwohl Diamond Grove nicht explizit von der alten Milchfarm handelt, auf der es aufgenommen wurde, kann es nicht umhin, ihr zu ähneln. Alte englische Balladen wie ,Lord Bateman" und ,Lord Randall" ergießen sich über Felder, die einst von der britischen Krone ,vergeben" wurden. Tragische Lieder wie ,Edward" taumeln über Tuscarora-Pfade und Baumwollfelder nach dem Bürgerkrieg. Hymnen wie ,Everlasting l" und ,Everlasting Il" fangen das Mondlicht ein, das seit Lord Bacons Rebellion durch doppelt gehängte Fenster fällt. Und die Nachtvögel trillern noch immer, und die Pflüge pflügen noch immer eine unkomponierte Musik, die darauf wartet, von zufälligen Ohren entdeckt zu werden. Diamond Grove ist in dieser Hinsicht Geschichte. Es ist ein Ort. Es ist Zeit. Es ist das Einfangen von Liedern, Lebendigkeit, Tonbandmanipulation. Wie der niedrige Damm, den das Wort ,Weir" andeutet, ist es eine Verteidigung gegen die Strömung. Es ist eine Verteidigung regionaler Lexika gegen massenproduzierte Umgangssprachen; eine Verteidigung gegen den Glauben, dass wir einfach zu einer einfacheren Zeit zurückkehren können; eine Verteidigung gegen die Vorstellung, dass Volksmusik ,rein" bleiben muss; eine Verteidigung gegen die Behauptung, dass ein Traum von der Zukunft, der in verlorenen Geschichten schlummert, unwiederbringlich verloren ist. Gegen all das verteidigt Diamond Grove traditionelle Musik, indem es sie so klingen lässt, wie die Komplexität der heutigen Zeit - weil es weiß, dass solche Musik und all die Geschichten, die in ihr stecken, auch in Zukunft eine Rolle spielen werden.

Orange & Red Splatter Vinyl. John Carpenters Soundtracks für die jüngste Halloween-Trilogie, die er zusammen mit seinen langjährigen Mitarbeitern Cody Carpenter und Daniel Davies komponierte, markierten die Rückkehr des legendären Regisseurs und Komponisten zur Filmmusik nach fast zwei Jahrzehnten Pause. Halloween (2018), Halloween Kills (2021) und Halloween Ends (2022) wurden alle von David Gordon Green inszeniert, der Carpenter bereits früh in die Vorproduktion einbezog und ihn schließlich als ausführenden Produzenten und Soundtrack-Komponisten für die Trilogie engagierte. Der mittlerweile berühmte Part mit der gestrichenen Gitarre in ,The Shape Hunts Allyson" aus Halloween wird, wie alle Gitarrenparts in der Trilogie, von Daniel Davies gespielt. John bezeichnet Daniel als den ,Abenteurer" der Gruppe und schreibt ihm zu, Sounds eingeführt zu haben, an die er selbst nie gedacht hätte. Cody, den sein Vater als ,musikalisches Genie" bezeichnet, ist eine ebenso wichtige Präsenz. Es ist seine ruhige, methodische Hand, die den Ideen, die entstehen, wenn diese drei zusammenkommen, Gestalt verleiht. In 2020 Anna Högberg put her widely celebrated band Anna Högberg Attack on hold, retraining as a nurse whilst continuing a solo practice and playing in other groups. With Ensamseglaren she makes a spectacular return with her own ensemble — this time a double sextet — performing an album length suite of new music written in dedication to her late father — the titular ‘ensamseglaren’ pictured on the LP cover as a young boy.

Shot through with renewed energy and a brutally affective emotional punch, Högberg’s formal experimentation opens up vibrant possibilities for the assembled musicians to let loose with some of their wildest and most ecstatic playing on record.

Högberg’s contention with grief leans into collective joy as method of mourning — the big band as extended family; where bonds are made through a shared experience of being together. Where everyone gets to be themselves without expectations of who they should be or what they can do. It’s a radical commitment to care — of her self and others — that animates and unifies this suite of music’s radical dynamics and variations in colour: from whisper-quiet textural intensity to harrowing distortion and double drum chaos; raucous and solemn song.

"Throughout history, humans have had different images of the transition between life and death. Imagine standing on the seashore on a summer evening and seeing a beautiful vessel being prepared for departure. The sails are hoisted. The evening breeze comes, the sails fill and the boat glides out onto the open sea. You follow it with your eyes as it heads towards the sunset. It gets smaller and smaller, until it finally disappears as a tiny dot on the horizon. Then you hear someone next to you say, ‘Now they have left us.’ Left us for what? The fact that they got smaller and smaller and finally disappeared is only how we see it. In reality, they are just as big and beautiful as when they were here, lying on the beach by our side. Just as you hear that voice say ‘Now they have left us’, there may be someone on another beach who sees them appear on the horizon, someone waiting to welcome them when they reaches their new port."
