Das freche und temperamentvolle französische Pop-Duo Charlotte Fever trotzt der Morosität des Alltags mit glänzenden Kostümen und tropischen Grooves. Nach Shows in Taipeh, Tokio und Seoul Ende des Jahres eröffneten Cassandra und Alexandre das Jahr 2023 mit einer (ausverkauften) Pariser Show und einer Marathontour mit Terminen in Frankreich, aber auch in Estland, Lettland, Andorra, Spanien, Österreich und der Tschechischen Republik. Großartige Songs aus dem reichen Fundus der Popularmusik von Scott Walker über Robert Wyatt bis St. Vincent. Auf ihren Wesenskern reduziert, in ein neues Licht getaucht und niemals übermotiviert vorgetragen. Lyrischer Jazz, Kontemplation. Pianist, Arrangeur und Produzent Uwe Schenk hatte mit Jochen Feucht (reeds), Florian Dohrmann (b) und Michael Kersting (dr) bei den Aufnahmen zu dieser LP drei äußerst routinierte Musiker an seiner Seite. Musiker, die die Schönheit der Reduktion schätzen. Die Auswahl der Songs übernahm Co-Produzent Andreas Vogel. Der DJ und Musikconnaisseur wusste dabei genau, welche Stücke bei Uwe Schenk auf fruchtbaren Boden fallen würden. Schenk schrieb daraufhin sieben Arrangements, die die Grundlage von Since You've Asked bilden. Im Jazzidiom verankert, mit einem Fokus auf Holzbläserklängen, sorgt vor allem das warme Timbre der Klarinette für den unverbrauchten und frischen Sound der Songs. Beste Voraussetzungen für eine entspannte Recording-Session und im Ergebnis eine LP, die dazu einlädt, sich ganz dem Klang hinzugeben, um tief in die Musik einzutauchen.

'Racoons' ist das mittlerweile fünfte Soloalbum des außergewöhnlichen Schlagzeugers Erland Dahlen. Er hat auf mehr als 300 Alben mit einer Vielzahl von Künstlern unterschiedlicher Genres gespielt und tritt regelmäßig mit Bands und Künstlern wie der Nils Petter Molvær-Band, Stian Westerhus, Geir Sundstøl, Madrugada und Eivind Aarset auf, um nur einige zu nennen. Auf 'Racoons' spielt Dahlen diverse individuell angefertigte Instrumente - verschiedene Holztrommeln oder maßgeschneiderten Zitherbass. Dahlen verwendet auch chromatische Blütenglocken und verschiedene Metallgegenstände für seine spannenden Klang-Collagen. Erland Dahlens Soloprojekt entstand aus der Tatsache, dass er im Laufe der Jahre eine Vielzahl von Platten mit anderen Musikern gespielt hatte, und ein Projekt haben wollte, bei dem er eigenständig aufnehmen und live spielen konnte. Im Laufe der Zeit hatten sich zu viele musikalische Ideen angesammelt, die zu keinem anderen Projekt passten, sodass er beschloss, einige davon in einem Soloprojekt zu verwenden. Daraus wurden bislang fünf spannende, hochkreative Alben die zwischen Elektronik und Jazz pendeln.

Nach dem Studioalbum 'Two Sisters' und dem Archiv-Sampler 'Selected Works 1&2' veröffentlicht die kanadische Komponistin & Performerin Sarah Davachi mit 'Long Gradus' ein Auftragswerk seitens des Montrealer Streicherquartetts Quatuor Bozzini für ein beliebiges Ensemble aus vier ähnlichen Instrumenten mit dem Untertitel 'Harmonische Beobachtungen in vier Teilen'. Die Streicherquartett-Version gibt es als CD & 2LP. Drei weitere Arrangements desselben Stücks (für Holzbläser, Blechbläser & Orgel, Chor & Elektronik) wurden im Laufe von 2022 in Berlin und LA aufgenommen und erscheinen gemeinsam auf der 4CD-Box 'Long Gradus: Arrangements', bei der jeder Interpretation eine CD gewidmet ist.

Als Carly Simon bei Jac Holzmans Elektra Records unterschrieb, war dies der Beginn einer Beziehung, die auf Vertrauen und gegenseitiger Bewunderung beruhte.

Zur Feier ihrer Zusammenarbeit hat Jac eine Sammlung von Tracks aus Carlys ersten drei Elektra-Alben zusammengestellt, die seiner Meinung nach ihre Zusammenarbeit und den Bogen ihrer Partnerschaft am besten repräsentieren. Mit Erinnerungen von Jac und Carly, herausgegeben von Ted Olson, erforscht diese "Sammelalbum"-Sammlung die Art und Weise, wie ein junges Talent und ein erfolgreicher Labelboss zusammenwirkten, um einen Sound zu schaffen, der die Singer/Songwriter-Bewegung definierte, die mit dem Feminismus der frühen 1970er Jahre zusammenfiel.

"Keeping Secrets Will Destroy You", das neue Album von Bonnie Prince Billy, erscheint am 11. August 2023 bei Domino und ist ein Album, das so gemacht wurde, wie es gehört werden sollte, in einem Raum. Der Klang von Menschen, die zusammen sind, die miteinander spielen, kommunizieren. Streicher, Holz, Tasten und Stimmen singen.

Das Album wurde in Louisville von Nick Roeder aufgenommen, mit Sara Louise Callaway an der Violine, Kendall Carter an den Tasten, Elisabeth Fuchsia an Bratsche und Violine, Dave Howard an der Mandoline, Drew Miller am Saxophon und Dane Waters' Stimme. Die 12 Songs umfassen ein breites Spektrum von Musik. Von der Klassik bis zum japanischen Acid-Folk und darüber hinaus. Und was vielleicht noch wichtiger ist: sie vermitteln ein Gefühl von Gemeinschaft, Zusammenhalt und dem Triumph des Vermächtnisses, das das Mark und das Herzblut dieser Musik ist.

Hannah Peel's viel beachteter Score zur sky orignal Science-Fiction-Serie 'The Midwich Cuckoos'. Nominiert für den Music Producers Guild Award in der Kategorie "Original Score Recording Of The Year".

Die sky orignal Serie 'The Midwich Cuckoos' basiert auf dem Science-Fiction-Roman von John Wyndham aus dem Jahr 1957 und erzählt die Geschichte eines englischen Dorfes, in dem die Frauen auf mysteriöse Weise schwanger werden.
Einzigartig und aufwändig produziert, harmoniert Hannah Peel's Klanglandschaft nahezu perfekt mit dem Sounddesign der sky-Adaption.
Mit analogen Synthesizern, Tonbandmanipulationen, Drones, Holzbläsern und Melodien, die den Gesang des Kuckucks widerschallen, schafft Peel einen Score, der ein perfektes Gleichgewicht herstellt zwischen den organischen Instrumenten und Melodien und der zunehmend düsteren elektronischen "Invasion".

Für ihren Score wurde Hannah Peel für den Music Producers Guild Award in der Kategorie "Original Score Recording Of The Year" nominiert.

Ruhig verlief die Karriere von Sieges Even nicht. Nach den ersten beiden Alben verzeichneten sie den ersten Besetzungswechsel auf der Sängerposition, auf den Album „Sophisticated“ (1995) und „Uneven“ (1997) betrieben die Holzwarth Brüder (Bass und Drums) die Band weiter.
Doch man fand sich wieder mit Gitarrist Markus Steffen zusammen
und rekrutierte den Ausnahmesänger Arno Menses, der zuvor als Schlagzeuger aktiv war. Mit diesem Line Up eroberte man die Herzen der Progfans, aber auch die von anspruchsvollen Metalheads. Erneut waren Sieges Even zum richtigen Zeitpunkt am richtigen Ort.

„The Art Of Navigating By The Stars“ wurde in dem Black Solaris Studio von Uwe Lulis (heute auch bekannt als Gitarrist von Accept) aufgenommen und erschien bei InsideOut Music, damals im SPV Vertrieb. Es folgten traumhafte Kritiken, auch für die im Anschluss stattfindende Tournee.

Natürlich war 2005 nicht an Vinyl zu denken, so dass diese Wiederveröffentlichung bereits von vielen Fans erwartet wird.
Aber auch die CD ist seit einigen Jahren „out of print“, so dass auch hier Handlungsbedarf bestand. Die Grafiken der Doppel-LP im Gatefold wurde vom Originalkünstler Thomas Ewerhard erstellt und das Audiomaterial getrennt für Vinyl und CD remastert.

Das Konzept rund um „The Art Of Navigating By The Stars“ begeistert heute noch ebenso wie die sowohl vertrackte und harte, aber eben auch gefühlvolle Musik. Hier waren Sieges Even einfach die deutschen Großmeister.

extensive liner notes and session details by Andrew
Sandoval and lyrics to all of the songs. Also included is a
bonus track, the 1973 alternate version of “Marie’s Theme”.

The Album:
Nesmith’s time with the Monkees was well and truly in the
rear-view mirror and he needed a new place to live and
work. He caught the ear of Jac Holzman, head of Elektra
Records, and a path forward miraculously appeared.
Realising that most of the record companies at the time
didn’t understand Country Rock, Nesmith convinced
Holzman to start a new label, Countryside. Nesmith would
run the label, put together a ‘house band’ and produce
albums by various up and coming country artists.
Unfortunately, most of the new label’s releases didn’t make much of an impression and Nesmith soon started to
contemplate his own music again. Aided by the power of his Countryside house band, he quickly crafted Pretty Much
Your Standard Ranch Stash, a full and final RCA album. Despite its commercial sheen, Ranch Stash wasn’t a success saleswise and it became the closing remark to a heavy chapter in Nesmith’s life, a final “adios” to Monkee Mike, to the cosmic
cowboy, and to his family, as he moved further on up the trail.

Was tun, wenn man Desert Rock und Doom aus der Wüste mag, die Umgebung aber alles andere als besonders trocken ist? BESVÄRJELSEN haben auf beeindruckende Weise eine Antwort in den dunklen Wäldern ihrer schwedischen Heimat Dalarna gefunden. Aufgewachsen am Schnittpunkt altnordischer und finnischer Kulturen im hohen Norden, umgeben von Runen und alten Göttern, Schamanen und Geistern, hat das fesselnde Quintett seinen Namen aus dem schwedischen Wort für "Beschwörung" abgeleitet. Außerdem lassen sich die Nordschweden nur zu gern von lokalen Überlieferungen, der Mystik und den dunklen, alten Musiktraditionen ihrer Heimat inspirieren. Doch BESVÄRJELSEN sind alles andere als eine weitere "Pagan Folk"-Band, die sich nach einer Zeit zurücksehnt, die niemals war. Mit wehmütigen Melodien und gleichzeitig mächtiger Riff-Power macht ihr zweites Album "Atlas" einen großen Schritt auf dem Pfad, den BESVÄRJELSEN von Anfang an eingeschlagen haben. Die Gitarristen und Sänger Andreas Baier und Staffan Stensland Vinrot haben die Band im Jahr 2014 mit der klaren Vision gegründet, den Geist und die Traditionen der weiten Wälder Dalarnas, einer Region, die sonst eher für ihre bemalten Holzpferde bekannt ist, in zeitgenössische Heavy-Musik zu transformieren. Als die Sängerin Lea Amling Alazam mit ihrer Leidenschaft für Punk- und Stoner-Rock, die im örtlichen Skatepark im zarten Alter von 13 Jahren begann, zur Besetzung stieß, reduzierten Andreas und Staffan ihren Gesang gerne auf eine Nebenrolle. Die Entscheidung fiel leicht, da Leas unverwechselbare Stimme die Intimität und das Charisma von Sängerinnen wie NINA SIMONE oder AMY WINEHOUSE heraufbeschwört. BESVÄRJELSEN veröffentlichten im Jahr 2015 ihre Debüt-EP "Villfarelser" und kurz darauf folge die "Exil" EP (2016). Das Debütalbum "Vallmo" der Schweden detonierte im Jahr 2018 in Stockholm und schaffte es bis in den staatlichen Rundfunk, kam aber auch anderen Orts hervorragend an. Das Album verband krachende Riffs und stürmische Drums mit ausgefeilten Melodien und nachdenklichen Themen. Mit ihrer Mini-Album "Frost" wollten BESVÄRJELSEN im Jahr 2019 die Bühnen in ganz Europa erobern, bevor auch die Schweden in den nächsten zwei Jahren eine Zwangspause einlegen mussten. Obwohl die Band gezwungen war, getrennt zu komponieren, nutzte BESVÄRJELSEN die freie Zeit, um eine Fülle von Ideen zu sammeln. Diese teilten die Musiker über die Meilen und Monate ihrer relativen Einsamkeit hinweg miteinander, bis sie schließlich im Jahr 2021 die Aufnahmen zu "Atlas" mit dem Produzenten Karl Daniel Lidén begannen. Mit melancholischen Harmonien, die aus dem Skizzenbuch von ALICE IN CHAINS stammen könnten und einer Heaviness, die Windhand zur Ehre gereichen würde, haben BESVÄRJELSEN einen massiven musikalischen Monolithen aus dem lokalen Granit gemeißelt und dann in den magischen Wäldern ihrer Heimat aufgestellt, um dessen Kraftlinien über die gesamte vom Titanen "Atlas" geschulterte Erdkugel zu schicken.

A demon with demands, a demon with demands. Es ist ein Spätsommerabend in der Dortmunder Nordstadt, in die warme Luft sind schon erste kühle Fäden eingewoben, die den Herbst ankündigen. Passanten flanieren durch die Straßen, auf der Suche nach einer Kneipe oder einem Imbiss und achten nicht auf die vier jungen Männer, die auf einer Biertischgarnitur vor einem Kiosk sitzen. Offene Flaschen, Kronkorken mit Ascheresten, Pfützen auf dem Holzlack: Es ist ein guter Abend, ungezwungen und fröhlich. Oder besser: Es könnte ein guter Abend sein. Denn über den vier Köpfen kreisen dunkle Wolken, Gedankenspiralen, aus denen kein Ausweg gefunden wird: Bei einem ist es die Angst vor Konflikten, die immer und immer wieder mit einer Flucht gelöst wird, sein Blick streift das abgestellte Auto, das ihn jederzeit wegbringen könnte. Beim anderen das Wissen, das jetzt eigentlich mal eine Entscheidung her müsste in dieser festgefahrenen Beziehung, in der man es sich zwar schön gemütlich gemacht hat, aber nun der Stillstand Einzug gehalten hat. Lauter kleine böse Gedanken, die man nicht loswird, sich immer wieder mit ihnen schlafen legt, sie füttert, hegt und pflegt, anbetet und verehrt. Heilige Dämonen. "Holy Demon" ist der Name des ersten Studio-Albums der Drens, eben jener jungen Männer, die sich dort vor dem Büdchen getroffen und dabei ihre Dämonen beschworen haben…

…Auf den 10 Songs liegen sie mit ihren eigenen Abgründen im Disput, mit den großen, mit den kleinen, "I know that this won't ever come true/ Felt first like glitter then so bitter couldn't hold on to you/ I just hold on to my holy demon/ And I can't resist this toxic feeling", lauter kleine Teufelchen, die man nur noch schwer loswird, die sich in toxischen Verhaltensweisen, im Kampf mit sich selbst ausdrücken. Nur noch als vage Erinnerung liegen die unbekümmerte Zeit der Bolzplätze und blutigen Knie zurück, zerrissene Hosen, high vom Schrottgras von der Straßenecke, über sich die sengende Sonne, aber im Reinen mit der Welt, "Our dreams were small/ Only needed a ball/ Because time was our highest good". Stattdessen geht es steil nach oben, aber der Abgrund klafft immer schwindelerregender neben dem Weg an die Spitze, "For so long I missed/ To see the hole I fell in love with". Drens wissen, wovon sie reden: Ihre Debüt-EP "Pet Peeves" brachte der Band ausverkaufte Shows und Festivalsommer ein, selbst im Scheissjahr 2020 konnten sie via Stream auf dem Eurosonic in Groningen spielen, die deutsche Netflix-Erfolgsproduktion "How To Sell Drugs Online (Fast)" nutzte einen Song als Soundtrack. Und auch wenn "Holy Demon" die feinen Haarrisse im Privaten behandelt, der Sound der Band klingt groß und wuchtig, dem fuzzy Surf- und Garagesound der ersten Releases wurden eine große Portion Alternative Rock verpasst, so dass das Album nach kämpferischer Aufbruchsstimmung klingt, den Dämonen wird trotzig ins Gesicht gelacht. Für dieses Update ist auch Produzent Sebastian "Zebo" Adams verantwortlich, der bereits für Bilderbuch das ikonische Klangbild von "Schick Schock" entwickelte. Diese Zusammenarbeit entfaltet auf dem Debüt-Album von Drens eine betörende Wirkung zwischen den dunkel schillernden Texten und dem kraftvollen Popappeal der Musik. Beneather is the solo project of Lewis Young - composer and collaborator in The Leaf Library, drone pop from north London. Lewis is a multi-instrumentalist, producer, designer and filmmaker currently living in Walthamstow, London. He started as a guitarist in noughties math-rockers Tea with the Queen, shifting to bass for multi-harmonied Naomi Hates Humans before returning to thumping roots as drummer for The Leaf Library. Objects Forever - the imprint label created by The Leaf Library - has provided Lewis with the vehicle to jump back into experimental song craft, inspiring the genesis of Beneather. “I just needed to make a project which spoke to all the aspects of music I’ve loved creating as a multi-instrumentalist. Plugging things into things to make satisfying little electronic loops, then layering extremely minimal bass and guitar lines with a lo-fi aesthetic. Melinda and I spent a few days in the studio - picking out objects, patterns… items that could inspire a thread of instinctive wordless melody. I took that expressionism and sliced it to pieces, rearranging it into ambient vocal hooks.” Beneather is an exercise in hypnotic simplicity. Experimental, dream-like music built on layers of scratchy electronic tape loops, chiming spacious guitars and abstract pulsing vocals. These cinematic songs combine Grouper's wistful deviations with the warm fuzz of Jefre Cantu-Ledesma, the nocturnal hum of Emeralds, the crackling collapse of William Basinski and Low's glacial pop melancholy. Outside of compositions for film, TV and Podcasts - Lewis plays with the indie drone-pop band The Leaf Library, featuring Matt Ashton from John Peel faves Saloon (“World-weary yet innocent, blissful dream-pop” - UNCUT - 8/10). 'You Belong There' ist Daniel Rossens ausgefeilte und eindringliche Betrachtung dessen, was nach dem rastlosen Enthusiasmus der Jugend kommt. Es ist eine fesselnde 10-Song-Wiedereinführung in eine Stimme, die sowohl völlig vertraut klingt, als auch durch den Akt des ungehinderten Ausdrucks und der neu gefundenen Selbstsouveränität völlig neu belebt wird. Fast zwei Jahrzehnte lang war Rossen entscheidender Bestandteil von Grizzly Bear, deren gemeinsame Harmonien und verschachtelte Texturen die Musik der frühen 1980er neu interpretierten. Er ist auch Gründungsmitglied der gefeierten Folk-Electronica-Band Department of Eagles. Vor vielen Jahren verliess Rossen die Enge Brooklyns, zog zunächst ins New Yorker Hinterland und dann nach Santa Fé, wo er in seinem Haus in der Wüste langsam die Welt von 'You Belong There' aufbaute. Rossen besorgte sich Kontrabass, Cello und Holzblasinstrumente und spielte fast alle Songs selbst ein, wobei Chris Bear von Grizzly Bear als Gast auf 'Tangle' mitwirkte.

"Algo salvaje" is an anthology devoted to a rich period when hundreds of bands appeared all over Spain and, after paying attention to what their US and British contemporaries were doing, found their own way to vent their teenage rebellion through loud guitars. With amazing results! Many of the 28 tracks are reissued for the first time, including very hard-to-find records. This double LP gatefold package includes extensive notes by Vicente Fabuel featuring all the original record sleeves and artist photos. "Algo salvaje" ("Something Wild"), now reaching its third volume, celebrates the darkest, neglected and rebellious side of Spanish beat. Internationally labelled as nuggets (after the original compilation of the same name concocted by Jac Holzman and Lenny Kaye in 1972 for the Elektra label), the more common garage rock label has been used to place and describe one of the most fertile chapters of rock & roll history during its most creative years. An underground story which has luckily become known, with participants from all around the globe which included anonymous musicians, independent record labels with impossible names and ridiculously limited pressings, often not more than a few hundred copies. The tracks chosen for the occasion, a selection filtered strictly by their musical value, adhere to the rules of the classic nugget genre while demonstrating the permeability of garage sound and its inevitable evolution at the turn of the decade (1967-1974) through mixes that embraced psychedelia, soul and even prog rock. ‘Flicker’ is the second album from Ride guitarist and songwriter Andy Bell. Written almost as a conversation with his teenage self, it follows the triumphant solo debut that was 2020’s ‘The View From Halfway Down’. This 18-track double album finds Andy moving towards classic songwriting, notably on the reflective lead single ‘Something Like Love’, the strident harmonies of ‘World of Echo’, the joyous refracted loops of ‘Jenny Holzer B. Goode’ and the fuzz-laden late-’60s balladeering of ‘Love Is The Frequency’. Stylistically, the four sides of ‘Flicker’ take in everything from modern psychedelia to fingerpicked folk, whimsical baroque pop, and Byrdsian 12-string beauty. It’s a breathtaking array and makes it even more abundantly clear that Andy has entered a purple patch in his songwriting, hitting a new velocity in contrast to his initial inhibitions about becoming a solo artist. He gradually overcame these after the passing of David Bowie in 2016, with the Thin White Duke’s bountiful 50 years of music providing inspiration from beyond the grave. ‘Flicker’ is also an apt description for the genesis of the album. At the start of 2021, Andy returned to the stems of the recording sessions he made at Beady Eye and Oasis bandmate Gem Archer’s North London studio and added fuel to the fire, writing melodies and lyrics and turning them into fully formed songs. The same sessions were also the starting point for ‘The View From Halfway Down’ and this album picks up where that one left off, quite literally, with the very first words being “I was halfway down…”. This is the first of several playful, possibly intentional, references to albums and song titles that litter the record like a musical breadcrumb trail. As much as this is a modern sounding and forward-looking record, it’s also very much about looking back, something that is clear from the first glimpse of the front cover – a previously unseen outtake from Joe Dilworth’s photo sessions for the inner sleeve of Ride’s debut album, ‘Nowhere’. “When I think about ‘Flicker’, I see it as closure,” explains Andy. “Most literally, on a half-finished project from over six years ago, but also on a much bigger timescale. Some of these songs date back to the ’90s and the cognitive dissonance of writing brand new lyrics over songs that are 20-plus years old makes it feel like it is, almost literally, me exchanging ideas with my younger self.” This conversation takes place across ‘Flicker’’s 18 tracks. Essentially it advises us to stop worrying about the future and enjoy each day as it comes, embracing the crushing, unpredictable lows of life as much as the almighty highs of being in love. Some of it remains unspoken, taking place sonically rather than verbally: the album has a reflective, meditative feeling throughout, exploring many aspects of mental health, and the beautiful stillness of first single ‘Something Like Love’ could almost be a musical salve to the heartache 19-year-old Andy poured into ‘Vapour Trail’ in 1990. “The ‘Flicker’ I’m talking about in the lyrics is that flame that makes a person who they are,” explains Andy. “I wanted to find that in myself, so I went back to the teenage me – a technique I learned in therapy and have been doing ever since – and got some advice on how to live and be happy in the 2020s.“‘The View From Halfway Down’ was about turning 50 in a very weird time of introspection. ‘Flicker’ is about gathering the tools to equip myself mentally for life in 2022 and beyond – post-pandemic, post-Brexit, post-truth.”

2022 may bring much much uncertainty to the world but one thing we know for a fact is that we are introducing our most innovative and intriguing new act in years – the French duo Archil & Leon with their five track debut (appropriately called) “Blooming”.

Having both released in the past independently, Archil & Leon were originally brought together thanks to their teenage band His Majesty and from there, their passion to create music together never has faltered. Leon is a veteran session and live drummer who also produces music for his own dance project Ongaeshi and the dance collective moovance. Archil is an accomplished solo electronic musician and the force behind Archil Lab handmade musical devices. Using elements like springs (Springophone) and wheels (Roulettophone), his instruments are lovingly manufactured in wood and somehow carry the characteristics of modular gear but in the most unconventional way possible.

At a first listen, Archil & Leon’s music comes off as a well oiled live jam but as you dig deeper, it’s clear these tracks have a precision and style that separates them into a category of their own. Their EP “Blooming” is the result of two full years of being locked in their studio, writing and experimenting together. Indeed, an underlying flow of 70’s funk permeates throughout their music, however pigeonholing them into such a stereotype would be a travesty as they have impeccable song writing skills and their self made instruments conjure an experimentalism which is through and through rooted in electronic music. We can only hope that fans of now-classic Jamie Lidell / Super_Collider will appreciate where they are coming from, and you agree their “sound” is brilliantly individual. After all, they created their tracks literally from the ground up.

Tartelet has a knack for uncovering virtuosic, off-kilter electronic music. Max Graef—born, bred and still holding it down in Berlin's Prenzlauer Berg—is their latest artist in this mold. Though adventurous dance music is thick on the ground in the German capital, Graef's 2013 run of singles, cropping up on Graef's own Box aus Holz, plus Melbourne Deepcast, The Gym, Heist and Tartelet, continually surprised, infusing worn-in house with manic energy and acrobatic elasticity. Where many of his peers make languid, self-consciously laid-back tunes, Graef makes brilliantly restless ones. Dropping the needle on one of his EPs, you nearly expect it to pop right off again.


Rivers of the Red Planet, Graef's first full-length and Tartelet's latest album project, takes all that wildness and refines, expands, updates and scrambles it. It's as ambitious and deviously entertaining a record as you'll hear in 2014, the fulfillment of Graef's desire to make anything but another contemporary house music album. At any given moment, Rivers of the Red Planet feels like it could have been recorded through the smoke at a jazz club in the booth at a techno club 30 years from now or inside an MPC stocked with crusty dollar-bin samples. (We'd guess the staff at Graef's beloved OYE Records in Berlin will have a difficult time settling on which section to file it in.) If it sounds sampled, it's a testament to Graef's natural musicianship and production prowess —the record is heavy on sounds he played himself, from drums and Rhodes to fat synth melodies wrung out of an old Crumar Performer water-damaged to perfection. For vocals, Graef enlisted Nigerian singer Wayne Snow, whose rugged soulfulness makes him a natural pairing. On cuts like "Drums Of Death" and "Speed Metal Jesus," the club- readiness of his EPs lives on. But Rivers of the Red Planet may be most at home in your living room, with a good bottle of red and a roaring fire's crackles mixing with the pops and hiss of the vinyl—a playful listen that sinks in, burrowing deep and getting you all warm and gooey on the inside.

Faitiche releases an album version of the radio piece Vom Rohen und Gekochten (The Raw and The Cooked) originally composed and produced by Jan Jelinek for the state broadcaster SWR2. The album The Raw and The Cooked brings together five sound collages that deal with the consistency of material and its mutability.

Solid, raw, boiling, powdery, liquid, broken and folded - categories which describe the nature of material. They can also be read in a chronological sequence: solid becomes broken becomes liquid becomes powdery... Material tells of its essence as it drifts through its states, always in correspondence with external energies. The Raw and The Cooked observes the artists Thomas & Renée Rapedius as they design their paper and metal objects and the artist Peter Granser as he ritually prepares Japanese tea, it shatters glass, bends metal and burns wood. The resulting audio documents capture processes of material transformation as sound.

The Raw and The Cooked was created with the help of ITO Raum Stuttgart and Thomas & Renée Rapedius. Originally produced for radio broadcast on Südwestrundfunk in 2020 it contains a variation of the collage Zwischen/Raum that was made with funding from Musikfonds. Fragments, The Debut Album From Trifecta (Beggs, Holzman, Blundell)
Trifecta, a new addition to the Kscope roster, features 3 of the contemporary
music scene’s most lauded and revered musicians - bassist and songwriter Nick
Beggs, keyboardist extraordinaire Adam Holzman and completing the line-up,
Craig Blundell - one of the world’s most celebrated drummers.
Having performed together as part of Steven Wilson’s band, the three would
jam together after soundchecks and from these sessions the fledgling ideas for
Fragments were born. Nick Beggs comments “after the last tour with Steven
finished, we had a handful of tracks ready to work on and as we moved through
our various separate projects we agreed to work on Trifecta.”
The record primarily leans toward a fusion of jazz rock, being instrumental except for the first single (the wonderfully titled “Pavlov’s Dog Killed Schrodinger’s Cat”), the lyrics of which, Beggs states, “are written from the perspective of
a layman trying to understand quantum mechanics...and failing.”
Each band member completed the recording and engineering of their own
contributions in their various home studios, helping to bring their individual
production ideas to each track. Adam Holzman mixed the record at his New
York home studio with the mastering handled by Andy VanDette (Rush, David
Bowie, Deep Purple, Porcupine Tree, Beastie Boys) in New York.
Asked what fans of the musicians can expect from Trifecta, Beggs says, “Fission!
It’s like Fusion but less efficient and more dangerous.”
The debut album resulting from this “fission” of these extraordinary musicians
is entitled ‘Fragments’ and will be released on Kscope on 20th August 2021.

It all started in 2020 when producer The Breed and guitarist Richard Holzmann decided to start their own project called PAPI CHURRO. The two german musicians came up with a unique combination of latin-folk and HipHop Sounds. Almost like a Lo-Fi Beat version of guys like João Gilberto or Carlos Jobim. But also the typical Mexican sounds of Druglord Movies like „Narcos“ are part of their soundcollage. In very short time PAPI CHURRO gained a fanbase and millions of streams on the net. Since all the instruments are played live the songs are not your average Samplebeat but come with some more complex arrangements. But still producer The Breed clearly references those „Chops and Breaks Roots“ on the songs.

Now it’s time for their first full-length LP. El Clásico features all of their recently released tunes but also comes with a bunch of new material. It features a lot of talented guest musicians. Blue-note artists Phlocalyst on some trumpet parts, Harmonica world champion Cy Leo from Hongkong. Lo-Fi producer Kid Taro and Bassplayer and producer FLKS appear throughout the record.

Als Komponist von Schauspiel- und Filmmusiken arbeitete er u.a. am Volkstheater Wien und dem Imperial War Museum London und schrieb Soundtracks u.a. für Muxmäuschenstill (D), Bye Bye Berlusconi (I) und Seance (US). Er ist auch Produzent und Co-Autor diverser internationaler Vero?ffentlichungen (z.B. Serengeti (US / Anticon), SchneiderTM (D / Editions Mego), Gregor Schwellenbach (D / Kompakt). Die Berliner Musikerin und Sängerin Kiki Bohemia produziert und veröffentlicht eigenes Material und kollaboriert mit internationalen Künstlern unterschiedlichster musikalischer Genres (z.B. “Principi d’incertesa“ is the debut by 4Cantons, a Berlin based musician from Barcelona. This EP is basically filled with dark elektro tracks… but it is not strictly elektro you get served here… these tracks are spiced up with touches of techno, EBM and acid… making them punchy and perfect for some body work on the dance floor… this without getting aggressive or anything as all tracks maintain some sort of relaxed hypnotic vibe… You could look at this EP as a contemporary and more club minded take on early 2000’s elektro… recommended to (dark) elektro lovers but these sounds will also for sure appeal to fans of techno, EBM and acid alike… Keep an eye/ear out on this artist as this first effort is very promising…

(Pink Floyd paid tribute to AMM's influence on their improvisational sensibility with the track 'Flaming' on their debut album, named after the piece that occupies AMMMusic's first side, 'Later During a Flaming Riviera Sunset').

Formed in 1965 by three players from the emerging British jazz avant-garde - Keith Rowe and Lou Gare had played with the great progressive big band leader Mike Westbrook and Eddie Prévost played in a post-bop group with Gare - AMM quickly evolved from a free jazz group into something decidedly more difficult to categorise. By the time these recordings were made, two more members had joined the group: another Westbrook associate, Lawrence Sheaf, and the radical composer Cornelius Cardew. Then at work on his masterpiece of graphic notation Treatise, Cardew brought with him extensive experience of the post-serialist and Cageian currents in contemporary composition. Using a combination of conventional instruments and unconventional methods of sound production (most famously Keith Rowe's prepared tabletop guitar, but also prepared piano and transistor radio), the group performed improvised pieces often running for over two hours and ranging from extended periods of silence to terrifying cacophonies.

Evan Parker famously described the improvisational logic of AMM's music as 'laminal', in contrast to the 'atomistic' approach more common among the generation of British improvisers (Bailey, Rutherford, Stevens and co.) to which he himself belonged. AMM improvised in layers: layers of sound subtly rising and falling or abruptly starting and stopping without being propelled by the implied pulse of free jazz improvisation. Rather than a pulse, AMM's music began with the sound of the room in which it was played, the Cageian anarchy of silence. By embracing the non-synchronous simultaneity of layered sound, AMM was able to create a musical container into which nearly anything could be incorporated at any moment: on AMMMusic, long tones sit next to abrasive thuds, the howl of uncontrolled feedback accompanies Cardew's purposeful piano chords, radios beam in snatches of orchestral music (and, on the LP's second side, an extended fragment of 'Mockingbird').

AMM's clearest break with jazz-based improvisation concerned the idea of individuality. Where improvised music has tended to foster the development of idiosyncratic stylists who move freely from one group to another, AMM, initially through an engagement with eastern philosophy and mysticism and later though a politicized communitarianism, sought to develop a collective sonic identity in which individual contributions could barely be discerned. the use of numerous auxiliary instruments and devices, including radios played by three members of the group, contribute to the sensation that the music is composed as a single monolithic object with multiple facets, rather than as an interaction between five distinct voices.

music influential to the artist Keith Haring.
The art of Keith Haring is today one of the most recognisable of any visual artists of his generation,
defining 1980s New York during an intense period when downtown artists and musicians collaborated
like never before. Haring’s musical inspiration took in the punk/dance downtown sounds of clubs like
The Mudd Club, underground disco at Larry Levan’s Paradise Garage, as well the early days of hip-hop
and electro.
The album is released to coincide with the opening of the first major exhibition in the UK of Keith
Haring’s work at Tate Liverpool and which runs for the next six months.

The keeping of pets marks humans' attempt at taking possession of a part of reality that is not at his disposal. Dressing a piece of the real that lives according to entirely non-human rules and which only in the saddest case does not resist the discipline of the human symbolic order vehemently and in a sustained matter, is a violent act of protection. Because in the non-place of the real, all that which we are helpless in the face of looms: the non-logical and the nameless, the violence and the noise, yet also the unrestrained and unfiltered desire.The innocuous figure of the pet marks a gateway to an investigation of these eerie milieus, while electronic dance music lends itself to this investigation in an outstanding way. This constellation marks the subject of Column's 'Pets II.'

Column is the name of Cologne based renaissance man Jan Philipp Janzen, who, as chief emissary of Cologne's pop internationalism, has been playing the field in various functions for Von Spar, Cologne Tapes, Urlaub in Polen, Owen Pallett, Scout Niblett or The Field, and who has also, in one way or another, been involved in most relevant records coming out of Cologne for the past number of years. After his excellent solo debut 'Pets I' (Areal, 2016), Janzen presents another extraordinary record in 'Pets II,' perfectly complemented by another ghostly oil work of Burkhard Mönnich on the cover.Sonically, 'Pets II' marks a clear development for Column. In its exploration of the thresholds of the real, it sets two points of focus, corresponding with the split in sides A and B.

Side A, on which Janzen teams up with long-time friend myr. (PNN), explores the uncanny as a fissure of the symbolic order, and the subsequent breaking in of the real. It opens with two peaktime rockets that have their wooden, nether-regional groove narrated by grim, down-pitched vocals. The ethereal remix by Leibniz (hundert) seems to be observing the situation from a hiding place, and is the side's clandestine and no less dark closer.

Side B, for which Janzen invited studiomate Marvin Horsch (Dorfjungs/Beats in Space) along, delivers two swaying synthesizer workouts, the second of which, 'Molly and Swerve,' is directed firmly at the dancefloor again. What is at stake here is the transition between a free, undirected jouissance of the real and a more ordered becoming-lust. Here, as in Map.ache's (Kann/Giegling/Altin Village) remix which closes out 'Pets II,' it becomes clear what connections dance music can foster between a free, impersonal desire and the sphere of interpersonal wanting, but also the losses that are negotiated in it. Above all, however, it becomes evident what a courageous daring project 'Pets II' is in all of its conceptual and aesthetic determination; with Von Spar's standout 'Garzweiler' 12' (Altin Village & Mine, 2017), it documents a New Cologne Realism.

This was Savile's mantra as he sculpted his 'Compersion' EP for Mike Simonetti's 2MR and it's a mantra we should all subscribe to. It's come about through his introspective analysis during the creation of his most succinct and starkest exploration date.

''Compersion' is a record about wrestling my own beliefs, both personal and political. It's about experiencing the anxiety and absurdity of loving a partner and ultimately myself. The sounds, tempos and arrangements found here are the result of further experiments with editing tracks to their absolute minimum. I tried to work these songs like I am working on me. Less thought, more direction and purpose, less catering, more expression.'

And more detail; throughout every stripped back heavily-edited sensation the conceptual EP provides, the meaning and message is palpable. Each track title inspired by Jenny Holzer and Helmut Lang's revolutionary provocative, sexualisation of the art space in Florence Biennale, 1996, there's a tangible physicality felt throughout...

The heavy breathing rhythmic elements of the electroid 'Talk Smile Bite' and its bedrock bedspring funk; the playful switch between breezy broken beats and driving techno coupled with minimal sample craft and literal message of an instantly recognisable vocal on 'Watch Scan Wait'; the much heavier, intense techno pressure of 'Tease Breathe Smell' where the heart is on the sleeve and it's palpitating wildly with direction, purpose and true expression.

A smart concept from a Smart resident, Savile has achieved something special here; a provocative model a deep self-construction and, above all, three damn fine pieces of techno.

After taking a short break 'House of Disco Records' are back with a purpose. Not content with the adding to the plethora of 'Disco Edit' labels representing the genre they have opted to walk a more distinct path, determined to lean on originals or clever sampling as opposed to outright re-rubs.

In this their twelfth release they recruit previous label-mate Harry Wolfman and compadre Skinny Love to provide three stunning dancefloor ready originals. The duo have certainly delivered on the brief and turned in three diverse and clever takes on what a modern Disco track with a House soul can represent.

On remix duties they have recruited a promising young producer 'Kickflip Mike', who has released on Box Aus Holz as Joschka Seibt and paired him with experienced disco merchant 'The Revenge' who is responsible for some of the best remixes we know of, and he doesn't disappoint here with either remix
